Here’s a little project I’ve been working on for a while. I have, possibly very inaccurately, calculated which songs have been the biggest songs of the 2010s so far from January 1, 2010 up until December 31, 2017. How have I done this? It’s.. somewhat complicated but I’ll try my best to explain. This all started when I started gathering all the weekly top 100 lists of the UK Chart from 2010 onwards. I did this in part because I found it very soothing and easy to list up and also because I was genuinely curious to see what every song’s chart run of those years looked like lined up together. Then I gave each song points based on the position it was in each week - these points I calculated by taking a number of random weeks of the years 2010 to 2016 (as this was the year I started this project) and calculating something of an average sale for each position of the list. After all of that I wanted to see if I could create semi-realistic end-of-year lists for the years I’d already covered and found that they definitely seemed plausible even if they definitely weren’t. Now I was starting to crave something bigger. I wanted to do a cross-century list with all the songs from 2010 till present day but that’s when I hit a speed bump: songs from 2015 onwards had much longer chart runs especially in the Top 40 so they were all getting way overly generous “sales numbers” and similar to the actual problem today I ended up with a chart that was very “recent hits”-heavy. This was not what I wanted to get out of this because I wanted a chart that reflected the songs popularity equally so I decided to try and use the sales chart from July 2014 onwards and see if I’d get different results. And different results is certainly what I got. Of course this meant that streaming heavy songs such as “One Dance” and the entirety of Ed Sheeran’s “÷” weren’t nearly as big as they were on the official chart but I was fine with that as collateral for a more interesting chart. Today I have compiled everything from 2008 to date but I have changed a few things to calculate the final numbers to accommodate for sales outside the Top 100 and such so I have come up with a formula:
..........First: I add (11 x 1.950 =) 21.450 points to that number bringing her total to 130.431 points. ..........Next: I take her 11 weeks and halve them (5.5), divide by 100 (0.055) and add 0.9 to them (0.955). ..........Finally: I multiply her total points with this number and get her final score: (130431 * 0.955 =) 124.562 points. Now you might ask: “but why add that confusing last part?” Initially I just had the first two parts of the formula but I kept hitting a problem. Songs that spent maybe 20 weeks in the Top 100 (but none of them Top 20) were getting far less credit for it than songs that spent maybe 8 weeks in the Top 100 (but some of them Top 20). I wanted songs with longevity to get something out of it but maybe not so much that it was overbearing. And I also wanted songs that got high peaks but crazy short chart runs to maybe not get too much credit. I hope this interests some / any of you because it’s been a very fun project for me and if you want to see the results I’ll happily post them here thought it might take a while. I even have ideas of doing the same for the 2000s and then possibly doing an update to this once 2018 is over but maybe just going over the songs that have climbed or are new entries at that point. To get this started the next post will showcase some of the songs that didn’t make the Top 1000. Mods: if this doesn’t belong here please let me know and maybe move it to a more appropriate forum. So now it’s time to get to some of the actual results of this listing. We have a total of 1000 songs represented on this list but still that’s less than 20% of the total amount of songs to reach the Top 100 from 2010 to date. Yep, a whopping 5240 different songs entered the chart in the timespan that this list has been compiled, and only 1000 of them will feature here so that’s a lot of great songs falling to the wayside. Here are some stats on the songs that failed to and managed to enter the Top 1000:
Counting official and sales-only number ones there have been a total of 235 songs to hit the top spot on both these lists. Only two of these failed to crack the Top 1000: 1039. “You Got It All” by Union J (2014) — 149.408 points 1095. “A Bridge Over You” by The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir (2015) — 134.057 points Including those two number one songs, a total of 216 Top 10 hits failed to meet the score required to enter the Top 1000. These are the 10 songs that were closest to making it: 1001. “Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)” by Breach ft Andreya Triana (#09, 2013) — 158.287 points 1003. “Antidote” by Swedish House Mafia ft Knife Party (#04, 2012) — 158.230 points 1004. “Wicked Games” by Parra for Cuva ft Anna Naklab (#04, 2014) — 158.145 points 1005. “Other Side Of Love” by Sean Paul (#07, 2013) — 157.866 points 1008. “Last All Night (Koala)” by Oliver Heldens ft K Stewart (#06, 2014) — 157.205 points 1010. “Say Nothing” by Example (#02, 2012) — 156.291 points 1011. “Something New” by Girls Aloud (#02, 2012) — 156.199 points 1015. “Badman Riddim (Jump)” by Vato Gonzalez ft Foreign Beggars (#07, 2011) — 154.842 points 1016. “Standing In The Dark” by Lawson (#06, 2012) — 154.730 points 1018. “Naked” by James Arthur (#04, 2017) — 154.283 points Now, I don’t want to spend this entire post on the songs that failed to make the Top 1000 so I’d love to shed some light on the songs that did make the Top 1000 and some songs that are being cut for other reasons than their scores. (What?) More on that later. So who exactly has made the Top 1000? Well, I’m not gonna list up every single song but I can tell you which artists feature the most. here are all the artists that have 10 or more songs in the Top 1000. Feel free to ask about any other artist, whether they feature and how many songs they have. 26 - Rihanna 23 - David Guetta 19 - Calvin Harris 18 - Justin Bieber 17 - Ed Sheeran 16 - Nicki Minaj 15 - Bruno Mars 15 - Little Mix 15 - Tinie Tempah 14 - Chris Brown 14 - Katy Perry 13 - Ellie Goulding 13 - Jason Derulo 13 - Olly Murs 13 - One Direction (+ 9 solos) 12 - Beyoncé 12 - Rita Ora 12 - Taylor Swift 11 - Jessie J 10 - Avicii 10 - Drake 10 - Lady Gaga 10 - Sam Smith 10 - Sia 10 - Will.i.am (+4 w/ band) How about the years - Are they equally represented? Somewhat. 2010 and 2011 have the most songs since songs tended to linger a bit shorter in the Top 100 then in 2012 onwards, so they have loads of songs that will drop out quickly one I start the actual countdown, but then again 2012, 2016 and especially 2017 have the lowest songs for perhaps the exact opposite reason? In 2012’s case I think a lot of the short-stayers are out already, but for 2016 and 2017 the sales chart was definitely influenced by the actual chart in various places so songs that lingered longer on the official chart tended to linger longer on the sales chart as well. 2017 also, of course, doesn’t have the 2018 sales added so any songs that were only starting to get big in 2017 but proper got big in 2017 are not on here (eg. “I Know You” by Bastille & Craig David, “River” by Eminem). 141 songs I labeled as “2010”. 141 songs I labeled as “2011”. 118 songs I labeled as “2012”. 126 songs I labeled as “2013”. 125 songs I labeled as “2014”. 130 songs I labeled as “2015”. 114 songs I labeled as “2016”. 105 songs I labeled as “2017”. Now onto that other thing I touched on: As you can see, all of those songs listed above have been released in the 2010-2017 period but we all know there have been heaps and heaps of older songs resurfacing in those years - Some with enough points to get even into the Top 100! However, I wanted to make this list celebrating the hits that were initially released in the 2010s because I plan on making a separate list for the older hits that will include sales from 2010 onwards in the songs’ totals. But then you might say: “But I’m curious how well those songs have done this decade” and I’ll respond by telling you that you can still get this info because before I start the actual countdown I will list up the 53 songs that would have made the Top 1000 had I included songs released prior to 2010. This of course leaves a few iffy songs that were maybe released in 2009 but didn’t become hits until 2010 but I have made the final call on those including “You’ve Got The Love” by Florence + The Machine, “Ego” by The Saturdays and “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele. Which side they end up on will have to be revealed once I go over these songs in the coming days. This post has been edited by cantthinkofaname: Jul 4 2018, 07:15 PM |

I mean that is of course a big part in the joy of sharing this with other people: knowing that other people are enjoying the work you're doing. Otherwise I could just as well keep it to myself but then again I also enjoy having this out here for myself to revisit one day or someone else to discover this in the future and finding this interesting to read. |

For the record, at any point during this countdown can you ask me if a certain artist or song is in the Top 1000.

Any Kylie such as All the lovers or Higher with Taio Cruz ? Yep, Kylie has exactly two songs in the Top 1000: “All The Lovers” and “Higher” but I suspect “Dancing” might make the Top 1000 next year thanks to its’ erratic chart run but only time will tell whether that’s true. Additionally she has 4 songs in the Top 2000 that failed to make the Top 1000. 1404. “Get Outta My Way” (#12, 2010) — 83.449 points 1557. “Into The Blue” (#12, 2014) — 67.150 points 1564. “Better Than Today” (#32, 2010) — 66.849 points 1594. “Timebomb” (#31, 2012) — 64.275 points This post has been edited by cantthinkofaname: Jul 4 2018, 08:23 PM |

Starting off on the pre-2010 songs (there's 53 of these).. Note that the position given to the song is where it would chart inside the Top 1000 if it were the only pre-2010 song added to the list.

I think I'm the only other person counting down a top 1000 at the moment so I wish you good luck with this project. I've managed to get from 1000 to 445 in six months.

Ahh this reminds me of the very first thread I posted in the chart forum which was a similar chart made via a convoluted formula need a moment to get my head around the methodology here but I applaud the amount of effort you've put into this along with all your other countdowns and whatnot on this site.
1621. “Party Like A Russian” (#23, 2016) [62k] This should be 'Love My Life' right? I was thinking I don't remember 'Party Like A Russian' making the top 40 |
