Updated! Late Night Talking now up to 4th for most top 40 weeks, and Satellite's added to Harry's top 40 tally, giving him five top 40s from Harry's House.
Meltdown is Niall's lowest-charting pre-album single unfortunately, though Heaven's performed consistently, perhaps a top 40 return is on the cards with the album's release? |

QUOTE One Direction: Official Top 20 biggest songs ever in UK revealed 14 June 2023 Can you believe it's been more than seven years since One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus? Since then, all five band members – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Niall Horan – have launched successful solo careers, continuing the group's legacy as a global pop phenomenon. Looking back, it's incredible to witness just how much 1D packed in during their initial six-year run. They released five albums – Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014) and Made in the A.M. (2015) – embarked on four headline tours, and racked up 28 Top 75 singles in the UK. Four of those singles, beginning with their 2011 debut What Makes You Beautiful, made it to Number 1. As Niall heads for another Number 1 with – this time on the Official Albums Chart, with his third solo effort The Show – we're taking the opportunity to unveil the era-defining boyband's Official Top 20 biggest songs in the UK. Warning: you will end up wanting to revisit their gleaming back catalogue after reading this. 5. Drag Me Down Released: 2015 UK chart units: 1.18m UK streams: 108m Official Singles Chart peak: 1 Released in July 2015, Made in the A.M.'s lead single was the band's first without Zayn, who had departed that March. One of the band's rockiest singles, it became their fourth Number 1 in the UK, confirming that One Direction were very much still viable as a four-piece. 4. Little Things Released: 2012 UK chart units: 1.25m UK streams: 83m Official Singles Chart peak: 1 Co-written by Ed Sheeran, this folky ballad became One Direction's second Number 1 hit when it was released as Take Me Home's second single. Its sensitive and empathetic lyrics about embracing your flaws have made it a firm and enduring favourite with the band's fans. 3. History Released: 2015 UK chart units: 1.3m UK streams: 110m Official Singles Chart peak: 6 Co-written by Liam and Louis, this singalong bop is – sob! – the group's final single to date. The wistful music video features clips from the band's many highlights over the years, encouraging fans to take a look back as they braced themselves for the upcoming hiatus. 2. Story of My Life Released: 2013 UK chart units: 1.43m UK streams: 111m Official Singles Chart peak: 2 All five band members had a hand in writing this folktronica tune, which was released as the second single from Midnight Memories. One of 1D's best-known songs, it's since been covered by everyone from The Offspring to Natalie Imbruglia. 1. What Makes You Beautiful Released: 2012 UK chart units: 1.94m UK streams: 116m Official Singles Chart peak: 2 Na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na, na, na! The group's ebullient debut single was an instant classic that debuted at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart. It remains such a crowd-pleaser that Harry included it in his setlist for his first two solo tours. QUOTE Niall Horan's Official Top 20 biggest songs in the UK: Slow Hands, Heaven and more hits 15 June 2023 This week, Niall Horan is heading for Number 1 with his third album The Show. Home to the Top 20 hit Heaven, it's on course to become the Irishman's second solo chart-topper following 2020's Heartbreak Weather. His debut album, Flicker, reached Number 3 in 2017. After finding fame as a member of One Direction alongside Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik, Niall has carved out an enviable solo career including eight Top 40 singles. His music, a deft blend of pop, soft rock and folk, has proven so infectious that he has recently announced a 57-date arena tour for early 2024. Given that Niall was unable to tour in support of Heartbreak Weather because of the pandemic, these shows across Europe, Oceania and North America are sure to feel even more joyful. So, as his solo career approaches another milestone moment, we're unveiling the Mullingar-born musician's 20 biggest songs ever in the UK, including collaborations with Anne-Marie and Julia Michaels. But first, let's take a closer look at Niall's Top 5 to date: 5. What a Time (with Julia Michaels) Released: 2019 UK chart units: 445,000 UK streams: 55m Official Singles Chart peak: n/a Taken from Julia's 2019 EP Inner Monologue Part 1, this lovely, understated duet has been a slow-burning success on streaming. Niall didn't write it, but we’d love to see him perform it on his upcoming tour. 4. Our Song (with Anne-Marie) Released: 2021 UK chart units: 532,000 UK streams: 59m Official Singles Chart peak: 13 Niall and Anne-Marie's vocals dovetail beautifully on this wistful pop ballad about a past relationship it's tough to move on from. The two singers enjoyed working together so much that later in 2021, they also teamed up for a cute cover of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere in aid of BBC Children in Need. Let's hope we get a third duet from the pair sooner rather than later. 3. Nice to Meet Ya Released: 2019 UK chart units: 535,000 UK streams: 60m Official Singles Chart peak: 22 Niall really brings the swagger on this stomping, Britpop-inspired bop from Heartbreak Weather. It's an impressive demonstration of his musical range even before you check out the Diplo remix, which reimagines the guitar-led original as an arms-in-the-air electro-house anthem. 2. This Town Released: 2016 UK chart units: 986,000 UK streams: 100m Official Singles Chart peak: 9 Niall's first solo single is a folky ode to the one that got away. "I saw that you moved on with someone new," he sings over gently strummed guitar chords. "In the pub that we met he's got his arms around you." The poignant lyrics double as a celebration of Mullingar, the small market town where he grew up, adding to an utterly charming debut. 1. Slow Hands Released: 2017 UK chart units: 1.4m UK streams: 134m Official Singles Chart peak: 7 Niall showed a more grown-up side on his funky and infectiously suggestive second single. "We should take this back to my place, that's what she said right to my face," he sings at the start, and it's safe to presume they won't be playing backgammon. An absolute tune that proved he could deliver bops as well as ballads, it spent 29 weeks on the Official Singles Chart. From the OCC: https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/o...tiful-number-1/
QUOTE This week 12 years ago, The X Factor alumni One Direction kicked off their Official Charts career with an irresistible debut single, What Makes You Beautiful. The group’s power pop gem stormed to Number 1 in its week of release and has gone on to spend an incredible 78 weeks on the Official Singles Chart so far. With 2 million UK chart units and 125 million UK streams to its name to date, it remains the Anglo-Irish boyband's biggest song so far. The accompanying video saw the five band members – Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – having fun on Malibu Beach and an old-school campervan. It's the epitome of good times. One Direction What Makes You Beautiful single artwork Written by top songwriters Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha – who would become key collaborators on the group's first two albums Up All Night and Take Me Home – the ebullient tune captured the group's natural charisma and youthful enthusiasm perfectly. It also had an empowering message that struck a chord with anyone who might've felt insecure about the way they look. "You don't know you're beautiful," the boys sing on the chorus. "That's what makes you beautiful." One Direction would go on to achieve three further Number 1s on the Official Singles Chart – Little Things in 2012, Blondie-meets-The Undertones Comic Relief cover single One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks) in 2013 and Drag Me Down in 2015 – before announcing an indefinite hiatus in January 2016. Since then, of course, every band member has gone on to launch a successful solo career. You can read our exclusive interview with Niall Horan, likely one of the nicest guys in pop, about his Number 1 album The Show here. Elsewhere on the Official Singles Chart this week in 2011... Right behind One Direction at Number 2 was Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s inescapable collaboration Moves Like Jagger. It's one of the UK's best-selling singles of all time despite never having reached Number 1, settling for seven weeks in the Number 2 spot. At Number 3 was the previous week's Number 1, All About Tonight by Pixie Lott, while Will Young's Jealousy climbed three places to return to the Top 10. It has previously peaked at Number 5 to become Will’s 11th and most recent Top 10 hit. Meanwhile, Rihanna's Avril Lavigne-sampling banger Cheers (Drink to That) climbed to Number 15, which would remain its Official Singles Chart peak. Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah, as Avril sings on the hook. 2 million for WMYB |
