by the sound of the clips, it sounds like a subtle album but an amazing one! 'wish I stayed', 'your biggest mistake' and 'salt skin' sound really good.

WHAT have they done to "Guns and Horses"?! ;_;
I'd imagine if I liked "Wish I Stayed" I'd be pretty distraught at that too. Oh the curses of listening to demos too much. It still sounds pretty good though. |

It's all studio trickery and the producer is going to be the star of the album.

Just read that she was the Critics' Choice at the Brits. Was there a shortlist?
She CAN'T be the best new artist coming this year |

There was a shortlist - Marina and Delphic were on there too. If this represents the high point of 2010 then we're royally screwed, because none of them (apart from maybe Marina) come anywhere near the quality of Florence and the Machine and La Roux's albums last year.

The only thing I like about Ellie at the moment is the font of this era Everything else... BLEH!
Marina deserved the awards she got! |

Just realized Marina was doing worse than Ellie. Weird as her material is far better and she's obviously way more talented. I'm not a huge Marina stan or anything (she's definitely not as good as BJ makes her out to be), but she has an A+ personality with solid material.
Ellie on the other hand can be bitchy (at least Twitter wise) and her material is average at best, though Under the Sheets is very nice. |

Marina's voice is very irritating though.

Marina's voice is incredible, very Kate Bush-like.

Marina sounds like she is aiming on becoming someone extraordinary whilst not being so. At least judging on her debut album which, on many terms, sounds like the eventual result was "forced" to be the way it is. No way in hell does she sounds genuin. It's pretentious. There are some good moemnts though. On the onther hand, Ellie sounds sincere on every track I have already heard. Her lyrics are simple, yet amazing. To me her amazingness is natural. Marina wants to be different, but her attempts are just riddiciluous sometimes.

Marina's voice is forced. I'm only aware of Hollywood and some Shampain (?) song but both are underwhelming, the latter being a little less so. Hollywood was a very poor debut 'proper' single, it made New In Town sound like Bleeding Love.
Starry Eyed is better but it relies too much on its fantastic video I think. Without it I'm not sure it'd be such a hit so equally I'm not sure the album will do much, but we'll see. |

marina is by far the better 'popstar' imo. she's got the personality, strong sense of character, well constructed songs. ellie is just a bit...watery in comparison.
as a side note; 'lights' has leaked. |

Not a huge fan of the new 'Wish I Stayed' I have to say. =[
Loved the demo. On the subject of Ellie vs. Marina, I think Marina has slightly stronger material and seems to have a more interesting personality but I haven't really seen much of Ellie so can't really compare. Love Marina's album and what I've heard from Ellie so far though. I know it was inevitable, but I don't see why there always need to be comparisons like this! First it was Duffy vs. Adele, then La Roux vs. Boots vs. Florence and now Ellie vs. Marina. Argh! Oh and 'Your Biggest Mistake' and 'Salt Skin' are simply divine. She's got such a cute voice. My first listen rate:
07 'Guns And Horses' 06 'Starry Eyed' 08 'This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)' 06 'Under The Sheets' 09 'The Writer' 07 'Every Time You Go' 06 'Wish I Stayed' 06 'Your Biggest Mistake' 06 'I'll Hold My Breath' 07 'Salt Skin' 'The Writer' is stunning NOOOOOOOOOO! They've ruined (what would have been a perfect '10' score) 'Wish I Stayed'! 'Starry Eyed' still sounds weak imo. At least 'Under The Sheets' grew on me for like a week! Nothing on this album is memorable enough for me I'm afraid. It has some lovely production, but nothing stands out to me. Overall though, this album is probably a grower, it's consistent and is about 10 times better than I expected from it... But I really couldn't pick another "Hit" single from it... |
