Well glossing over 'Walk This Way' (
) 2007 was easily the best year for Girls Aloud music quality wise. I remember the day 'Sexy! No No No...' premiered, I'd finished school after my exams and I played that song all. damn. day. I was just blown away by the sheer perfection of it. They'd taking 'Something Kinda Ooooh' and put quite literally the DOGS BOLLOCKS onto it. 'Tangled Up' remains my favourite album ever. It's one of the few albums where there is not one track that I don't love and deem 10/10 worthy. 2007 was also the first time I saw them live. It was at Nottingham for the greatest hits tour. I remember the arena being FREEZING cold and the crowd were quite miserable. I was fourth row and I turned around about half way through to see virtually everybody sitting down! I didn't care I MISS THEM

I miss them too.
 Well 2007 started with me feeling proud about the fact that they had done *so* well at the end of 2006. They were fairly successful 2005/6 but in a way it felt like they were underachieving, and I certainly felt that they deserved so much more success. So seeing 'Something Kinda Oooh' become their biggest hit in ages & 'The Sound of Girls Aloud' reaching #1 felt like justice. So I had high hopes for them in 2007.'Walk This Way'... it's a guilty pleasure and I do still like it, I certainly liked it a lot at the time. However I do wish the collaboration could have been a brand new song or at least a more inspired cover, in hindsight. Out of all of their singles 'WTW' doesn't feel incredibly worthy of being one of their #1 singles. The tour! I have to admit I can't remember much about all of the performances but I know I had a whale of a time on the night I saw them. I do remember them coming down from the ceiling for the opening song 'Something Kinda Ooooh' though. I think I'm a bit hazy about this tour because it's the only one that didn't come out on DVD (what a shame, it would have been quite something if every tour they did had had a DVD release).'Sexy! No No No...'. Wow, what a song.  Definitely still in my Top 5 favourites of theirs. I still remember the first time I heard it. I was on holiday when it premiered, and I managed to hear it on a portable radio. It premiered pretty early in the morning so I was still very sleepy when I listened to it. My initial reaction was most definitely "wtf was that!" and then I couldn't hear it again until I came back from that holiday. Obviously having another listen (and not being half asleep while doing so) sold it for me. The video was fantastic too, certainly by their standards. I have to admit I was a little disappointed when it peaked at #5, I wanted higher than that. Although I'm glad it did peak at #5 now because otherwise they wouldn't ever have had a #5 hit. #geek The single was strangely released to download on Friday, so it had two days of sales effectively "lost". That was very rare/unusual for those days. That's why it initially entered at #64.'Call The Shots' was definitely "a moment" in their career. It was fabulous that the radio finally hammered one of their songs and it was great that they were on The X Factor too. The song entering at #9 purely based on downloads from the album, when the CD singles hadn't even been released yet was pretty incredible! They even prevented the Spice Girls from reaching the Top 10 with 'Headlines', oops. I do sometimes wonder how this single would have done if it had been fully released a week before the album came out. Perhaps a #2 hit behind Leona's 'Bleeding Love'? I really think this song deserved more than #3, but it had great longevity and its sales (for the time, and for them) were fabulous. The 'Tangled Up' album.  Their best ever album! What more can I say about it? Well, it deserved a better chart run. Only spending 1 week in the Top 10 was quite criminal, and it was midweek #2 at one point so it ending at #4 was slightly disappointing. I'm glad it sold over half a million, but I think it deserved all the success that 'Out of Control' got instead.Ended this year with excitement and anticipation for the 'Tangled Up' tour, having purchased tickets to see them in Birmingham. |

Oh god I miss the girls. Each and every one of them doesn't seem to hit their full potential or personality until they're all together.
After being into 'rock' music and thinking I was cool, 2007 was when I really started to get back into Girls Aloud and not care about the haters because I started to realise that it didn't matter what people thought - And it helped that lots of respectable critics backed Girls Aloud as a credible pop act. They also seemed to have a kind of guilty pleasure/cool factor at the time that helped. I was going into my first year at uni at the time and I remember on indie nights the DJs would drop Call The Shots which was big at the time and everyone would love it. I remember being really pleased with the success of Call The Shots - the song was EVERYWHERE but in hindsight I'm annoyed by the circumstances. It was never a number 1, which means people now don't really remember just how successful it was because sales were still so low. It's sold around 300k overall but its amazing chart run today would have had it as an easy Gold certification and maybe platinum. I looked at the sales numbers of last week - and worked out that CTS' first 7 weeks in the chart of 09-03-03-05-09-07-07 alone would have had it at 240k and it's top 40 run would have had it around 360k, and it charted for countless weeks beyond that. Anyway, after a Girls Aloud style hiatus (not as long as them, I still managed to remain relevant upon my comeback  ) I was back as a fully fledged fan and I remember having a gap in my physical singles discography from the Chemistry/GH eras and getting on ebay to re-complete it. I got Tangled Up for Christmas and WOW - what an album. It still remains the best thing any of them have ever done solo or together in their careers (Sorry Insatiable), it's generally one of the best pop albums ever. So many gems on it. Ooh yes I remember pretty much all of this stuff! Firstly, watching the 'Walk This Way' video on their website! I thought it was a sassy and cool video at the time, and that Sarah's hair looked odd (Nowadays I actually really like it in this video, I think I was just used to it being longer??).
Then 'Sexy...No No No!' came along! Getting their newsletter in email form informed me of the title and it's premiere on radio, and I remember being very dubious at the time because it sounded rather naughty at 10 years old!!  However I really enjoyed it at the time, thinking it was very catchy and wanting to be one of them in the video, thinking their outfits were so cool! Nowadays I ADORE the song, so electric and infectious, and the video probably my favourite of all of theirs.'Call the Shots' was also a great follow-up single that was very omnipresent. At the time I thought Nadine looked like an absolute goddess with her blonde locks! I was instantly drawn to the sweetness of Nicola's part too. It has most definitely stood the test of time. I got both 'Tangled Up' and 'Now 68' that Christmas (giving me two excuses to listen to 'S...NNN!' ). WHAT an album, I still play it regularly now, as well as their greatest hits.
