I'm more interested in who's gonna win the battle of the retro top 40 hits (my money's on Aeroche x), not got any expectations and will most likely tank here, but I'm very pleased to be in the final.

Feel there's a good chance for one of my favourites winning here, but I'm not holding my breath. Was a really good final so hope to see some great results to reflect that.

Final Results

Hello everyone, welcome to the final results, hosted at the Budokan Stadium in Ziadiz, Séyetana. Outside, on the race track, the competitors wait, ready to start running ahead as points are given to their entries. It’ll be a long race, so settle in.

For tonight, you’re going to be treated to a simple Japanese lesson, simple of course is all I should be doing at my level. While for readability purposes, the scoreboard and your banner will be entirely in English, I have translated everyone’s country names into Japanese, and, just like the Parade of Nations that has just finished in the real Tokyo, we will be revealing the votes in Japanese “alphabetical” order, and this is how your country name will be written at the top of each voting post. A transliteration of the country name will be provided to help you read this alternate version, though for the most part this is just the country name pronounced phonetically.

Japanese pronunciation: there are no sounds that change depending on what letters follow them in Japanese, so if you know vowel pronunciation, you’re going to be at least close – nothing like Chinese in that regard where half of the consonants have specific different pronunciations to get used to. A, U and O are mostly as you’d expect, though U is only a ‘u’ like ‘fun’ and not a u like ‘uni’, I sounds like ‘ee’ in ‘bee’, and E sounds like ‘e’ in ‘bet’ – make sure to pronounce the ‘e’ at the end of words, not like in English – sake (the Japanese rice wine drink ) is said ‘sa-keh’. As for vowel combinations, the main relevant one is ‘ai’ sounding like our ‘I’ in Iceland.

Order: Vowels come first, in this specific order: AIUEO. Then is all the consonant pairs, each consonant pairs with each of those vowels, so after that is KA/KI/KU/KE/KO, as K is the first consonant, and so on. Some consonants, like K, in fact, have a ‘soft-voiced’ counterpart, so for K, that is G, and G occupies the same alphabetical order as K does.

The order is, as those of you who watched the opening ceremony may remember:

All other letters are somewhere in there as irregular sounds, for instance, J is hiding in the Zs. Now, you may not start with the letter you’re expecting, as the transliteration will be based on pronunciation/how the Japanese would pronounce it based on their existing transliterations of similar names, and to that end I’ve tried to find records of how you guys pronounce your country names, for, you know, accuracy.

Writing systems: Japanese has three writing systems, the hiragana, the katakana (these two collectively are kana), and the kanji which meld together in a beautiful and logical way. Hiragana is the main ‘alphabet’, here is its ‘na - な' and ‘no - の’, which I’ve chosen because they should be the only hiragana you’ll see tonight, performing as an adjectival-linking particle and possession particle respectively. It’s used for words of Japanese origin, which BJSC country names are decidedly not.

The kanji are pictograms also used for words of Japanese origin, there is no alphabet to these, and they are used to make Japanese more readable, as the language has many homophones and doesn’t use spaces, reading a sentence full of kana is a nightmare. The main kanji word you’ll see tonight is 共和国, read as ‘Kyouwakoku’, which means ‘Republic’.

So the main one we're using tonight is katakana. Every hiragana has a katakana counterpart. Katakana are used for loanwords and foreign words in Japanese script, and the closest thing I can think of is to imagine if every word in English that still doesn’t feel English was always written in italics. Most of your country names will be written entirely in katakana. One point to note is that in katakana elongated vowels are written with a long dash (ー) after the first vowel and are transliterated as a double of whatever vowel that is.

For the contest, feel free to remind yourselves of the tracks everyone entered with videos embedded in their voting post, and there will be a scoreboard every vote up until the last few votes, where we’ll do a scoreboard freeze. I encourage you to take part and post about the latest changes of course, it’s going to be a fun one.

(it’s ‘shi’ rather than ‘si’ and ‘ji’ rather than ‘zi’ – all J sounds are grouped under this second kana. Small y-kanas of ‘ya’, ‘yo’ and ‘yu’ can change the ‘shi’ or ‘ji’ into ‘sha/ja’ etc. and our first country is fairly appropriate for that)

As I’m sure you’ll know if you’ve ever heard a Japanese person speaking English or perhaps seen some cruel jokes about them (not what I’m trying to do here I must say! The transliterations are to give you an idea of how to say the katakana), their L and R sounds are essentially the same – they’re rendered as R for most purposes (even if the sound is definitely a mix and not really either letter), so all our L and R countries are here. R is the third-last in alphabetical order, and the last common sound.

As I mentioned earlier, this is the only true consonant in Japanese and normally you cannot start words with it, but it is the sound that I use whenever I say N DNTN, and I based the precedent off of N’Djamena and Ghanaian former president Nkrumah’s katakana transliterations. In the Japanese game Shiritori, a word chaining game where you say words that start with the last letter of the previous word, you lose when you say a word ending in this letter.

My scoreboard all matches with Iz's so a quick verification

Congrats Ben, not my first choice for a winner but it was only just short of my commiserations which is a good showing for a pure pop song for me - can definitely see why it was so popular, it really sounds like a cross between MARINA and Dua Lipa! (And after so many years of not managing to quite get that elusive top 5, you jump all the way to a win the first time you break into it )

A bit of a shame that DJ Sabrina came so close as that would have been an excellent winner but still loving seeing it up so high <3 justice achieved for 'All The Beautiful Things U Do' which definitely deserved better than 15th itself. That ends up being the only song in the top 5 that I voted for but Magdalena Bay and Majid Jordan were commiserations too and I did think the Minelli song was decent (albeit Varakë's entry did the same thing far better so y'all are wrong for letting that bomb xx English language privilege it is :'().

Great to see Cumulonimbia and Rolloland in the top 10 too (I did think the latter would be more of a contender but 7th is not bad!), and a bunch more songs I voted for lining up in the 11th-15th positions! 19th for Séyetana is ok as well but aw at it fading so much from its great start, N DNTN also ending up fading more than I'd have liked :'( Jadakissnia at the very least avoiding the bottom 10 but this should have been at least top 20 easy so that's certainly a disappointment, justice needed for Lotunia and Aquafina as well.

Not quite bottom 3 for me then but still bottom 5 - never expected big things from this one so I can't really complain, the running order conspiring to give me false hope of contending for the top 20 at one point though </3 nevermind, with Aeroche and FARC down there with me clearly the bottom 5 is the new top 5

Thanks for your hosting Iz, you've been fab as I always knew you would be if you ever got the chance to host - shame that that had to come through the host runoff rules, we need to give Séyetana an actual win one of these days. x

~Bhangra won the semi before deduction, but had they voted then (based on their final vote) they would have likely given enough points to Ultraviolenceland to overtake them.
~Greyson Chance was very fortunate with Aesthetica's late votes, Caerfyrddia actually got more votes than many of the qualifiers but lots of those were 1s and so it wasn't enough.

~Hosting a semi where you might Q or not Q, it's very nerve-wracking to receive votes, I was very much expecting to not, so in that way I am absolutely thrilled with 19th.

Congratulations St Burbia! I ranked your song 60th out of 63 so it wasn't really to my taste, sorry. But great to see the top 2 songs in my vote finishing 3rd and 2nd.

I'm very pleased to see Run Run Run finish in 7th place. It was a song that I have been hesitating to enter for the last few contests so it's done much better than I expected. This is my fourth best finishing position.

And once again, thank you so much to everyone for entering, to FARC/jakee for giving me the opportunity to host by stepping aside, and to everyone else for all your compliments, it's been very fortunate I've had the time to dedicate to this, and I doubt I'll ever get to host again unless I win by some miracle (maybe in the future, eh), so I really went all out into this.

Very big congratulations to Ben, it's a great song for your first win; it was definitely one of the best pop songs in the contest and my semi 8 - though Semi 1 had a lot of better songs so it did fall to 6 points in the final, very pleased that I ended up pointing all of the top 4.

Given that a lot of people seemed surprised that McAlmont & Butler even reached the final, being in and out of the top ten for a while was a pleasant surprise. A mid-table finish is a lot better than I was hoping for after those comments. Good to see lots of appreciation for Bernard Butler's great guitar playing and David McAlmont's extraordinary voice and to get the chance to highlight the fact that the magnificent Yes isn't their only song.

Very jubilant to be finishing in the top half once again after trailing very low on the leaderboard! Proud to have sent this track and received warm reception. I hope the next one is going to be excellent too but I think it will be a bit risky.

That being said, my huge huge well done to Iz for hosting this edition. Everything has been to the point and well thought-through. I love it is anime-themed and Iz knows his stuff really well, so credits for all the hard-work there!

Forgot also to congratulate St Burbia too! It is a decent pop entry to listen to. Delighted to know Chaeri lived up to the expectations and almost won the contest. A bit surprised Summericia finished that low as I think this is a typical pop entry that will drawn in votes. Same goes to POPHub's entry too. YA sounded very unique and shocked it did so well in semi-final 1 and flopped in the final which certainly Jadakissnia didn't deserve.

Whilst it's a bit unfortunate to miss out on top 20, 21st is a new final position for us so bittersweet really. Thank you to Jordan and the Robot for the 18's.

Fun stat: I was just thinking it seemed abnormally long since the last first-time winner (Jupiterdonia in BJSC 124) and indeed that run of 11 contests in a row with repeat winning nations was by some way the longest ever - the previous longest runs were 6 in a row in BJSCs 47-52 and 111-116. (The former of which included 3 wins by Aeroche lel)

Many thanks to everyone who voted for Rare Facture - I'm pretty amazed with a T10 finish tbh, really happy that so many people also enjoyed it! I think we can safely say that'll be my last appearance there this year but I will definitely take that.

PS - great to see the cooler half of 152wild (y'know the one with actual taste) giving us points at least. The other one who I won't name because I am FUMING rn can quite frankly get in the bin/skip/tip/pit.

So excited for St. Burbia winning, congrats!!! I'm glad 'Hero' managed to have such a wide appeal, it sounded like it'd be a worthy winner so yay. Really enjoying that top 5 and my own top 2 just barely scraped into the top half, so pleased with that as well.

Great job hosting Iz, the theme went over my head but your effort and efficiency were remarkable and with such a time difference too, very much appreciated!

Pretty good winning track! Congrats to St. Burbia for a first ever win.

The big (good) shock for me is Jupiterdonia finishing 4th. I was really shocked to hear a song like that even make the final let alone finish top 5. I really liked it (especially in the heatwave last wave) but slow-tempo male ballads normally tank in this so that's a welcome surprise result.
