BuzzJack Music Forum _ Movies and Theatre _ Buzzjack Movie Awards 2017: The Results

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 3 2018, 03:04 PM

This will be starting this evening and most of the results will be hosted tomorrow evening! Idk on timings as much cos all three of us are quite busy this weekend but it'll get def done! (especially considering nearly all my plans this weekend have been cancelled because of snow cry.gif).

Anyway if you still want to get votes in (I think Michael is the only one who said he'd vote that hasn't yet), you have until 6pm cos I'm starting to prep after that! 18 voters so far and some very close, and some very not close, categories this year laugh.gif

As you may have noticed, there was no voting thread for the Razzies. The turn-out was dreadful so we decided that were just gonna do the winners from whoever got the most nominations and the 'winners' will be revealed tonight! Next year the Razzies will be merged into the main awards with about half the categories from the Razzies being removed!

Hype & Predict away x

Also if anyone wants to do best picture write-ups, these films are still available!

(we can roll with films having at least one commentary so if you are planning to help out with this, I'd say prioritise the ones that have two spots!)

Baby Driver: One spot
Beauty & The Beast: Two spots (still don't have from Michael)
Call Me By Your Name: Two spots
Get Out: One spot
Manchester By The Sea: One spot
Spider-Man: Homecoming: Two spots
The Big Sick: One spot
Wonder: Two spots
Wonder Woman: One spot

Excited! Routing for the Superhero films and 'Call Me By Your Name' and 'The Greatest Showman', mostly! biggrin.gif

Those would be fabulous, thanks Grant 😍

Gonna start the Razzies in about 10/15 mins and we'll get through those quickly!

Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Horror & Worst Song had no clear winner so all three of those categories are cancelled this year.

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 3 2018, 11:35 PM

WORST SCI-FI/THRILLER

Winner: Transformers: The Last Knight

Who knew people were still watching this trash, a probably well deserved win here. Also scoring some recognition here were Alien: Covenant, Murder on The Orient Express, Star Wars 7 & War of the Planet of the Apes but T5 was the only one to get multiple noms.

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 3 2018, 11:40 PM

WORST DRAMA

Winner: Murder on the Orient Express and The Circle

Both trash. Both deserved. The Circle squandered a potentially great concept and was horrific, MOTOE was a clusterf*** of a mess. Also getting some noms here were 50 Shades, Happy End and failed Oscar bait in the form of Gold & Rules Don't Apply.

(Don't worry it'll be nice/fancy presentation for the actual Oscars!)

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 12:04 AM

WORST ACTION FILM

Winner: Free Fire

Another bad film winning *.* This was just 100% action and it wasn't good at all. Buzzjack slaying with these winners so far!

Posted by: Dexton Mar 4 2018, 02:15 AM

Haven’t seen Free Fire but I can agree with the other winners laugh.gif Murder had such promise too, brilliant cast and a brilliant source material.

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 02:19 AM

Everything has been so deserved so far. 'Free Fire' really should have been renamed to 'Misfire'. So bland. The cast is incredible which makes it even more baffling as to why it was so bad!

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 02:43 AM

WORST COMEDY FILM

Winner: Daddy's Home 2

So deserved. One of the most unfunny things I've ever had to sit through and this was just horrendous, the last half an hour or so was actually torturous. Also scoring some mentions in this category were box office smashes (Jumanji), critical & commercial failures (Baywatch, Snatched), smaller comedies (Hampstead, Table 19) and film icer if they were comedies (Free Fire).

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 02:49 AM

WORST ANIMATED FILM

Winner: The Emoji Movie

An iconic movie *.* I haven't acc seen this but yeah this got beyond critically attacked and dominated at the official Razzies last night. I remember when I was hyped for this when the idea was originally announced kink.gif This unsurprisingly walked the category, with the smurfs 3, cars 3 and buzzjack oscar nominees Sing & Lego Batman Movie also getting some mentions.

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 03:16 AM

WORST PREQUEL, REMAKE, RIP-OFF OR SEQUEL

Winner: Murder on the Orient Express

A dreadful remake. Once again completely deserved, this really had so much potential ffs. Anyway this walked this category getting 3 noms whilst nothing else got above 1 (which was basically made up of every film mentioned in the genre categories that fall under one of these 4 things). I'm kinda surprised 50 Shades didn't pick up anything here after the 1st one dominated the Buzzjack Razzies.

I'm still looking forward to 'Daddy's Home 2'. Despite poor reviews. laugh.gif

'Emoji Movie' officially getting the big Razzie award the other night too!

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 12:00 PM

WORST SCREEN COMBO

Winner: KENNETH BRANAGH AND HIS MOUSTACHE - MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

A third win for MOTOE already! Will it ever stop laugh.gif Also scoring some mentions here were different cast members together from Table 19/Daddy's Home 2/Jumanji/Apes/Bright & Any Combination of Two Characters, Two Sex Toys, or Two Sexual Positions (Fifty Shades Darker) [the latter which was nominated at the actual Razzies!)

It's probably deserved kink.gif I'm just relieved they didn't go for full 'controversy'/'headlines' with mother! not winning anything *.*

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 12:18 PM

Ok the Razzies are fully prepped so when I start getting some comments I'll rush through the rest of the comments & we can get onto the Oscars *.*

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 12:38 PM

WORST SCREENPLAY

Winner: DADDY'S HOME 2 & MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

All my least faves slaying today *.* I'd say the Daddy's Home 2 script is probably worse cos its actually tragically bad but Murder's script is also a massive mess. They were the only films to get more than one mention here, with other films scoring one mention including The Snowman, Star Wars 8 and all the other usual suspects!

Posted by: Dexton Mar 4 2018, 12:45 PM

I haven’t seen Daddy’s Home 2 nor do I ever intend to. Daddy’s Home was AWFUL so I expect the sequel to be just as bad. I hate when actually decent comedians (eg Ferrel, Hart) combine to create a terrible movie which does well commercially mainly due to the names involved. The comedy is just so crap it’s hard to believe people enjoy it - this goes for most comedy releases too*.

*I would shove “these days” onto it but comedies have famously been either incredibly bad or amazingly good tongue.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 12:46 PM

WORST DIRECTOR

Winner: Happy End - Michael Haneke

Yep, more than one person actually saw this film ohmy.gif I don't think this got great reviews but still a lit bit of a shock winner here! Anyway once again it was most of the usual suspects that also picked up some mentions here apart from Kong: Skull Island & Hacksaw Ridge

oh ffs, not me doing a repeat of BJSC and accidentally posting all the winners again ffs!

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 12:52 PM

WORST MALE SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE

Winner: Daddy's Home 2 - Mel Gibson

Good. Trash wins for a trash performance. I think he also picked up the actual razzie for this, what a shame. Anyway he was the only person in this category to receive more than 1 mention, with others getting mentioned including likely Oscar winner Gary Oldman (The Space Between Us), more Daddy's Home 2 stars (John Lithgow), critically hated movie the Dark Tower (Matthew McCougnahey), Transformers 5 (Anthony Hopkins), The Snowman (Val Kilmer) and also To The Bone (Keanu Reeves) & Apes 3 (Woody Harrelson)

Posted by: Dexton Mar 4 2018, 12:56 PM

I hated Woody Harrelson in War... but I think that was mainly due to the character rather than his portrayal

I forgot John Lithgow was in Daddy’s Home 2, he’s a really great actor (his season arc in Dexter is honestly one of my favourite seasons in TV) so I am slightly interested in watching it just for him tongue.gif Couldn’t care less about Mel Gibson though, way past his prime kink.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 12:57 PM

WORST FEMALE LEAD PERFORMANCE

Winner: Star Wars 8 - Daisy Ridley

After nearly scoring a nomination in best actress for her performance in the 1st film (and in a weaker year she probably would've got in considering 2015 had massive competition with Larson/Ronan/Blanchett/Theron & 2 J-Law performances), Ridley now picks up the razzie for her performance as Rey. I didn't love her as much as I did in the 1st film but I still thought she was pretty good so I'm a bit gutted she won this. Other actresses that got mentions were Charlize Theron's great performance in Atomic Blonde, both leads in Snatched and previous winner Dakota Johnson for 50 Shades Darker.

I love Lithgow as an actor but he was dreadful in DH2 sad.gif it was just full cringe.

Posted by: Nightcrawler Mar 4 2018, 01:04 PM

Quite happy to say that I missed a lot of these movies! Was bitterly disappointed with Star Wars 8, but didn't feel that Daisy Ridley was the worst part of the movie so bit of a shame that she got worst female lead.

Glad I made the decision to not spend my money on Orient Express!!

Posted by: Chez Wombat Mar 4 2018, 01:07 PM

I know Star Wars 8 wasn't perfect, but I don't think the acting was part of the problem, Daisy Ridley was good? unsure.gif In what world is she worse than that 50 Shades 'actress'? mellow.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 01:09 PM

WORST MALE LEAD PERFORMANCE

Winner: Murder On The Orient Express - Kenneth Branagh

Shocker x A dreadful performance, especially towards the end of the film & another well deserved win for trash as it picks up its 5th win of the night. Also getting mentions here were Vin Diesel (both Fast 8 & Xxx3), Matthew McCougnahey & Keanu Reeves & more Daddy's Home 2 stars again (for Gold, John Wick 2 & Mark Walhberg respectively), Warren Beaty (Rules Don't Apply), nearly buzzjack oscar nominee Michael Fassbender (Alien: Covenant) and a trio of Dwayne Johnson performances (Jumanji, Furious 8 & Baywatch)!

Posted by: Regina Mar 4 2018, 01:52 PM

Daisy winning that is criminal.

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 03:19 PM

WORST PICTURE

Winner: Daddy's Home 2, Free Fire & Happy End

And the winner here ends in a three-way quite random tie! Unsurprisingly Daddy's Home 2 gets this honor (tf at this trash winning more), and also getting the win here are Happy End (this is acc so random I'm screaming!) & Free Fire. Actually screaming at Orient Express not winning here after its domination throughout the awards. Also getting some mentions were yeah all the usual suspects apart from 50 Shades laugh.gif

BEST SCORE

01. La La Land (10 / 0)
02. Call Me By Your Name (4 / 4)
03. Dunkirk (1 / 4)
04. Blade Runner 2049 (1 / 2)
05. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (1 / 1)
06. Jackie (0 / 5)

And let's kick off with by far the biggest landslide of the night and possibly the biggest ever landslide at Buzzjack Oscars! ohmy.gif

Winning easily with double figures is of course the Oscar winning score by Justin Hurwitz for La La Land <3 <3 This score is just a masterpiece and elevates the film to even more greatness. The highlight is ofc the 7 minute Epilogue which is one of my favourite ever score pieces of all time & I've constantly been listening to the score ever since the film was released!

In runner up is Buzzjack fave Call Me By Your Name who's score if I'm honest I didn't love too much but it was solid, as ever this picked up a lot of support with 4 votes in 1st & 2nd preference votes. In third place is another Oscar nominee, Dunkirk, and the score is an integral part of the film and works fantastically with the action that is occurring. 3rd to 5th all picked up 1 first preference vote each and in 4th was Blade Runner 2049 (which I've not seen so haven't heard the score) and another classic John Williams Star Wars score comes in 5th! In 6th place unfortunately is Jackie, which despite picking up a lot of support from 2nd preference votes (including mine), fails to gain a 1st preference vote. Outside of Portman's performance, the score is the strongest aspect of the film for me.

This is the 1st year of this category so what a winner to start this category off with *.*

BEST SONG

01. The Greatest Showman - Keala Settle - This Is Me (6 / 4)
02. Call Me By Your Name - Sufjan Stevens - Mystery Of Love (4 / 1)
03. La La Land - Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone - City of Stars (3 / 1)
04. The Greatest Showman - Hugh Jackman, Keala Settle, Zac Efron, Zendaya & Ensemble - The Greatest Show (2 / 2)
05. The Greatest Showman - Zac Efron & Zendaya - Rewrite The Stars (1 / 3)
06. Call Me By Your Name - Sufjan Stevens - Visions of Gideon (1 / 2)
07. La La Land - Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone - A Lovely Night (1 / 1)

Two awards in, two different musicals are now Buzzjack Oscar winners cheer.gif

The 2nd winner comes from Keala Settle's incredible This Is Me from current phenomenon The Greatest Showman. Keala's vocal is absolutely something else and I'm really hoping this picks up the Oscar tonight! This has turned into a massive hit and peaked at #3 in the UK after another showstopping Graham Norton performance and this song is incredible lyrically and vocally. And this is a massive improvement on last years winner *.* (can't stop the feeling, ew.)

With three films dominating this category, they all spread out quite evenly! In 2nd place was Mystery of Love, the main theme of Call Me By Your Name, which was leading at one point but couldn't keep up with This Is Me in the end. And taking bronze is La La Land's Oscar winning City of Stars which was one of my favourite songs of last year <3 The other two Greatest Showman songs take 4th and 5th and both also slay & are UK top 40 hits *.* In 6th is the 2nd Call Me By Your Name song with Visions of Gideon and in 7th place is A Lovely Night which I love but idk how that got nominated as I'd put it near the worst on the La La Land soundtrack! Every song managed to pick up at least one 1st preference vote *.*

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 08:07 PM

I felt so sick not being able to vote for 'What A Lovely Night' sad.gif SCREW YOU SHOWMAN!!!

(Oh and I think I went for The Greatest Show in 1st and This Is Me 2nd! Surprisingly)

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 08:07 PM

BEST SOUNDTRACK

01. The Greatest Showman (5 / 2)
02. Call Me By Your Name (5 / 1)
03. La La Land (2 / 6)
04. Baby Driver (2 / 4)
05. Beauty & The Beast (2 / 1)
06. Pitch Perfect 3 (1 / 2)

And in one of the closest battles of the evening, The Greatest Showman takes its 2nd win of the evening!

The Greatest Showman soundtrack has turned into something of a phenomenon recently with it breaking records everywhere and has been on top of the UK's chart for pretty much the whole year! It's so well deserved as all the songs are incredible and this really has the makings of a classic musical. The three songs nominated for Best Song here are my highlights <3 And also this is WAY better than last years winner in this category (Suicide Squad, how in the af did that happen?)

Meaning just missing out in 2nd place for the 3rd time this evening is Call Me By Your Name which missed out marginally by one 2nd preference vote. I liked the soundtrack but it wasn't my favourite. In 3rd place is La La Land which is my favourite here & deserved better. I've had the soundtrack on repeat non-stop since last year & still listen to it 24/7, this was actually 4th for ages so I'm glad it finally managed to get bronze because it got so many 2nd preference votes!! In 4th is music-driven Baby Driver where the music is great (ofc cause it's an Edgar Wright selected soundtrack) & works perfectly in setting the mood of the film. That means the bottom two consists of Michael's faves Beauty & The Beast (another solid Disney soundtrack adaptation) and Pitch Perfect 3 (Freedom '90 & Toxic>>>>the rest) which doesn't quite hit the heights of the 1st two but is still very good!

Posted by: Nightcrawler Mar 4 2018, 08:10 PM

Ahhh so happy The Greatest Showman won! Easily my favourite album of the year so far - just puts me in such a good mood when I listen to it!

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 08:11 PM

As with previous years, we've done the write-ups for this years Best Pic nominees and the turnout this year has been great!! Thanks so much to everyone that has helped and I hope you enjoy these & they convince y'all to check these films out! I think every film has at least one now apart from Beauty & The Beast (Michael do u still want to do that?)

Let's get going *.*

BEST PICTURE: NOMINEE #1

Taika Waititi is a GOD. That's literally all you need to know tbh. He's responsible for the incredible What We Do In The Shadows and the fantastic Hunt For the Wilderpeople, but when announced to helm the next Thor movie, I was really concerned and unsure as to how his style and specific humour would fit/wondered if he'd even have his humour allowed into the MCU. It turned out that I had no reason to be concerned. Taika has a certain charm to not only his unique directing style, but to his writing. It takes someone special to really excel and deliver his comedy. He hit gold with both Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. Then adding very welcome new additions to the MCU in Tessa Thompson, Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum as well as HIMSELF. Korg is literally right up there with Groot for me! WHAT A FANTASTICALLY ADORABLE AND GENIUS CHARACTER! But yeah, I THINK this is in my top 5 MCU movies. heart.gif

In 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe began with the release of the first Iron Man film. Nearly a decade on and Marvel are showing no signs of slowing down, having released three blockbuster movies in 2017 alone. Thor: Ragnarok, the third (and without a doubt, the best) film in the Thor trilogy, is Marvel at its best: a strong story line, powerful action scenes, a great cast and hilarious one-liners ("Oh my god...your hammer pulled you off?"). I felt really concerned as I sat down to watch this for the first time - the previous two Thor movies had left much to be desired - but from the opening scene, I was hooked. Chris Hemsworth finally gets to show off his comedic timing; Cate Blanchett solves Marvel's long-time villain problem with her wickedly brilliant portrayal of Hela, the Goddess of Death and Jeff Goldblum plays the Grandmaster as only Goldblum could. Even director Taika Waititi gets to join in on the fun as the incredibly funny Korg (an alien made out of rocks) and actually ends up stealing the show with his dead-pan one-liners. Whether you're into comic book films or not, this is the ultimate buddy (superhero) road trip (through space) movie with something for everyone (including a http://www.gaytimes.co.uk/guys/97583/chris-hemsworths-shirtless-scene-thor-ragnarok-finally-hit-internet/. You're welcome.)

Chris Hemsworth often feels like a "movie star" rather than an "Actor" for me, but with this movie I finally got to see him as an actor and I loved it.
Ragnarok is up there with Winter Solider and Days of Future Past as my fave superhero movie tbh.

05. Split (1 / 5)

And Oscar-nominated Get Out picks up its first award tonight in our first genre award of the evening!

Get Out is a fantastic film that blends together multiple genres (as shown by it scoring noms in 3 categories for genres) and even though bits of it are scary, there's three films here that I prefer way more to it and found scarier so I'm kinda gutted this won! Still a great film though and takes the crown from last year's winner 10 Cloverfield Lane which is also fab.

In 2nd place is one of my favourite films of 2017 with mother! getting quite a lot of support. The film is something else and even though it may not be too much of a horror, the third act is scarier than anything else released in 2017. And in 3rd place is It which I'm really shocked didn't come closer to challenging for the win. This is the only film here that properly scared me and I was jumping (& screaming kink.gif) in my seat throughout the whole film, Pennywise was something else. In 4th place was another of my favourite films of 2017, teen-horror Happy Death Day which was more of a horror-comedy but did provide some scares and was a fantastic film. Meaning in last place is Split which gets a lot of 2nd preference votes but only one 1st preference vote. I did really like Split but I definitely prefer the other 4 films here so I'm glad it came last!

Would love for Thor: Ragnarok to win. Such a strong year for contenders in best pic tbh!

Thanks! Though truth be told, I had to read yours first to get inspiration laugh.gif

Thor: Ragnarok is one of my favourite Marvel films of all time, so I'm glad it's getting love here. yahoo.gif

BEST COMEDY

01. The Big Sick (5 / 3)
02. La La Land (4 / 2)
03. Kingsman: The Secret Service (3 / 3)
04. Girls Trip (2 / 3)
05. Pitch Perfect 3 (2 / 2)

I'm so f***ing glad The Big Sick won something here <3 <3 What a winner. *.*

The Big Sick is one of my favourite films of 2017 and the film perfectly blends drama and comedy fantastically and is absolutely hilarious, I was laughing throughout the film and the performances were so funny & sfg. This is definitely a future classic for me and I'm shocked how much support it got on here and this is a perfect surprise winner *.* This is a million, billion times better than last year's winner Deadpool.

In 2nd place is ofc my fave La La Land but I can't even be gutted that it lost considering it was The Big Sick that won *.* LLL was leading for nearly the entire time but slipped at the last minute! The film has some fabulous comedic moments, in particular the 'I Ran' scene <3 In 3rd place is Kingsman which also did better than I expected; I didn't find it too funny apart from Elton John's performance which was something else. Girls Trip was also hilarious and I'm glad it picked up some votes here, the performances in particular made this film. And in last is PP3 which I still haven't seen but I thought it would do better than this oops.

BEST DRAMA

01. Call Me By Your Name (7 / 2)
02. Dunkirk (3 / 2)
03. Moonlight (3 / 1)
04. Manchester By The Sea (2 / 2)
05. Wonder (1 / 6)
06. Get Out (1 / 2)

After coming so close three times already tonight, Call Me By Your Name finally takes home its first award of the night!

Call Me By Your Name is an excellent drama film and deserves this award, I'm not surprised it won here one bit and this definitely felt like one of the most obvious wins of the night! This follows from last year's excellent winner Arrival which actually won this category in an even bigger landslide than CMBYN did! Arrival went on to win best picture, will CMBYN repeat this?!

In 2nd place, and definitely higher than I was expecting, is Dunkirk, the fantastic Christoper Nolan drama and it edged out Oscar BP winner Moonlight by one 2nd preference votes. This is the only nomination Moonlight scored meaning it'll be going home empty-handed but it did beat three Buzzjack Best Picture nominees here! In 4th was Manchester which started really strong and then flatlined, the only non real life Oscar Best Pic nominee Wonder takes 5th as it scoops up a massive amount of 2nd preference votes and in dead last, despite winning horror, is Get Out!

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 08:37 PM

Split didn't deserve last place in horror! sad.gif The Big Sick beating out some big BJ faves though! I didn't vote for it, but I'm not mad tbh laugh.gif Such a cute film and story. Best Drama was probs the most predictable category of this year tbh. Poor 'Wonder' though sad.gif

Where do I start with this? Just everything about this was perfect. From the casting, directing, songs, story. The cinematography and general style and feel of the film is so classic with a modern and updated twist. It pays homage to the true classic musical movies in such a gorgeous way and manages to do so whilst still be quite unique and fresh within itself. Ryan and Emma's chemistry together is still yet to be matched for me. But I am so happy it was them two instead of the heavily rumoured Miles Teller & Emma Watson! I feel like it would have been a completely different film.

This really is an utter work of genius. From the eye-catching visuals to stunning work infront and behind the camera to the catchy tracks and the fabulous plot, this film has everything and brings out every emotion from happiness and joy to sad and regret, this is a film for the ages and a film that is surely going to become a cinematic classic in the future.

First of all lets start with the acting. Emma Stone is absolutely bloody fabulous as Mia and gives one of the best performances that I have ever seen. She portrays Mia fantastically and she is such a fabulous actress who really adds to her character and is fabulous throughout. She gives a masterclass of a performance, I adored her auditions and her final performance of The Fools Who Dream was so so heartbreaking. She gave absolutely everything to it and I haven't felt that way seeing a song performed in a non-animated movie since Anne with I Dreamed A Dream. I really hope she wins the Oscar! Ryan Gosling is also absolutely fantastic as Sebastian and he is absolutely stunning with all his great piano playing throughout the film despite only learning how to play it during the pre-production! He also gives everything to his role and portrays his character perfectly, I really couldn't imagine anyone but these 2 in these roles so it still feels crazy that this originally starred Emma W and Miles (as much as I love both of them, especially the latter!). Their chemistry is utter fire and they work so perfectly together! The rest of the cast is also great in the few moments that they get to shine, loved Rosemarie DeWitt in her one prominent scene and John Legend and Emma's friends etc were all great also and I loved J.K. Simmons in his scene as the uptight boss!

The film is such a beautiful film to look at. From the moment it starts as being presented in Cinema-Scope, I knew this was going to be something special! The colours are fabulous and the dresses are so bloody beautiful in the film! This has to sweep the technical categories such as Costumes and Production Design at the Oscars! I love the old school Hollywood feel that the visuals present and it was spectacular to see on the big screen! And I loved every second omfg! The opening scene was so joyous and I loved it all from Emma and Ryan's fabulous first meeting to the dinner scene and the auditions! It was perfect. Especially the last scene. That montage was so f***ing beautiful and heart-breaking. I was desperate for Ryan & Emma to end up together but them failing to be both together and fulfil their dreams and destinys was so gutting but it worked perfectly. And the 'what if' of showing us what would have happened had they ended up together. Omg. It was heartbreaking and once again complimented with the absolute visual beauty of the rest of the film. The last look at each other, I was in tears at the end. It just completely hits you emotionally and is just so superb. I love how they both achieved their career dreams but the film manages to portray that they had to sacrifice each other to get to where they are.. I loved all the references to old cinema and the references to Casablanca and Rebel Without A Cause etc <3 The relationship was so beautiful and the film was fascinating in seeing everything develop. I also loved when they saw that film being filmed and Stone/Gosling are walking passed it and admiring it, really sticks with me! Chazelle's direction is absolutely fabulous and he has really made himself become one of the hottest directors on the block with the one two punch of this and Whiplash. You can so easily tell the cast and crew's passion in this project and everything always looks so perfect.

And onto the songs. Bloody hell I haven't loved a soundtrack this much since Frozen. The songs are fabulous and the score by Justin Hurwitz is as good and is so beautiful! My review by review per songs/score! I also love the constant use of the piano playing throughout the film!
Another Day Of The Sun: Such a fun opening, felt like a fun track from a classic musical and the visuals with this are so striking! Love how they all get out of the cars just randomly during traffic and then the eventual beeping at the end of the track!
Someone In The Crowd: So so fun! They all slays this and Emma's solo slow part is beautiful and then the track kicks into full gear with that fabulous showstopping jazzy ending *.*
City Of Stars: Definitely one of the best! from the film! The song is fab and I love how Ryan and Emma's vocals compliment each other on this track. They are so fab and I love the little laughter from Stone throughout this track, really just brings joy and I loved that bit before the end where they are singing together!
Audition (The Fools Who Dream): I think this is my favourite. I still cry even when just listening to it. This is so stunning in the film with the focus just fully on Emma with barely any backing and pretty much no visuals bar Emma herself. Her vocals are so beautiful on this and the song really portrays the entire theme of dreaming with heartbreaking lyrics and Emma breaks my heart during this scene. The last part of the song where her vocals soar is just too much. So so stunning.
Epilogue: I think this is already the most I have ever listened to a 7 and a 1/2 minute song. I think this is my favourite piece of score of all time. It is just so incredible and portrays every single emotion that is elicted in the film, from the joy to the pain to the sorrow, it is ugh stunning. Hurwitz's does such a fabulous job here and I think this is in my top 3 from the soundtrack! Spoilering the rest of my review for this track so don't read the spoilers unless you have seen the film as I am spoiling the ending! I didn't think anything could top Arrival's epilogue montage but just two months later this comes on. 7 and a 1/2 minutes that portrays everything from this film. Starting with Ryan realising Emma is in the audience and how this brings all the past emotions flooding back. And then he plays the piano stunningly for the first part of the track before the film goes into one of its best scenes, the montage. I've talked about it earlier but it was so heart-breaking to see how it could have been, how everything could have been perfect between the pair but they would have had to sacrifice their dreams. This is one of the best what if scenes of all time. One for the ages. From the uptempo joy for a couple of minutes to Ryan/Emma's first meeting with them actually kissing like in the trailer instead of him ignoring and shoving past her as we saw in the film!, to the use of the film's wonderful City Of Stars to the gorgeous sets and visuals to Ryan and Emma's stunning ballroom dancing. And then all this hope of kids and being together fades away as they pursued their careers and we just see Ryan playing piano and Emma lifeless in the audience. This is really a scene for the ages. So f***ing epic. So utterly perfect. Both cruel and beautiful, hurt and stunning, just a 7 and a 1/2 minute piece of music and stunning visuals and storytelling creates one of the best movie scenes of all time.

I could probably write more but I'm gonna stop there, I think this is the longest post I've wrote since my rate last year! laugh.gif I haven't loved a film this much in my entire time on Buzzjack and I am so looking forward to this sweeping the rest of the awards this year! I've had the soundtrack on repeat all day, can't wait to see this again and will be definitely getting this on DVD! Chazelle, Stone, Gosling & the rest of the cast and the crew have created something so spectacular, special and magnificent. As Emma said in her GG winning speech, this is a film to inspire dreamers. And this has inspired me so so much. Perfection.

11/10

I was going to write a new write-up but this is still my best review (apart from maybe In The Heart of The Sea xxx) on the site and I can't think of what else to write. I've pracied the soundtrack part down though!
(Don't worry no other review is gonna be anywhere near this long!!!)

Call Me By Your Name totally deserved that award. I watched it last night for the second time and it is just such a stunning film. I really hope it picks up some awards at the actual Oscars tonight.

BIGGEST BOX OFFICE FAILURE

01. Justice League (5 / 4)
02. Ghost In The Shell (4 / 4)
03. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (3 / 2)
04. mother! (2 / 0)
05. Monster Trucks (1 / 3)

Yeah there really couldn't be any other winner here.

Justice League is one of the most catastrophic failures of recent times. For a superhero film including all the massive DC heroes (especially Batman) to limp just over $200m domestically and not doing much better worldwide is something else. This is a major failure which took DC about another 10 steps back after Wonder Woman finally took them in the right direction. This takes the crown from last year's big budget flop sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass.

In 2nd place, and nearly usurping Justice League to the win, was Ghost in the Shell which died at the box office due to poor reviews + whitewashing controversies. Those two were probably the biggest failures (along with MT) so at least they came top 3. Despite underperforming, especially in comparisons to expectations, I really don't see how Star Wars 8 is the third biggest disaster of the year considering how much money it still managed to rake in and was one of the biggest films (possibly biggest?) of 2017. In 4th was mother! which was never gonna do more than it did so I'd say it did pretty well respectively and coming in last place is Monster Trucks which showed a perfect argument for why green-lighting an $115m budget film based on the idea of a movie executive's four year old child is not the best idea.

BIGGEST BOX OFFICE SURPRISE

01. The Greatest Showman (6 / 2)
02. Get Out (5 / 3)
03. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (4 / 4)
04. It (2 / 5)
05. Split (0 / 0)

The Greatest Showman already pulls off its 3rd win tonight and were barely through that many of the awards, how many more is it gonna take?!

The Greatest Showman only just scraped a nominee in this category through the tiebreak round but ends up winning the whole thing! My theory turned out to be correct that this suffered in the 1st round cos it was still starting to only just surprise but by the voting stage it had gone way more crazier and turned into a phenomenon! This film has been quite something at the box office and has incredible holds worldwide, including becoming the 1st film in UK history to go to #1 on its sixth week of release. This films box office is something else & I'd definitely read up on it if you haven't already! Way better than last year's winner 10 Cloverfield Lane which wasn't really that big of a shock. (f*** me that won a lot of random awards last year laugh.gif)

Just missing out on taking the win here is Get Out which was another huge success and had insane legs for a horror movie. Though as good as it did, I do kind of feel it'd be 4th for me here, idk if that's because the other films box office are more fresh in my minds but I was low-key expecting this to meet the numbers it did than all other films bar split here! In 3rd is Jumanji which also picked up a significant number of votes and has done completely insane numbers, its about to become Sony's biggest ever grossing film at the domestic box office and this could have easily have been a box office bomb + alongside TGS its been having insane holds worldwide! It was another massive winner and in a weaker year this probably would've won this category. It was expected to breakout but the numbers it did were still nearly double what anyone was expecting & it became a cultural phenomenon. That means in dead last, being one of the only things in any category this year to get 0 votes in 1st & 2nd preference votes, is Split which did do better than expected but can't hold a candle to any of these. I personally wouldn't have even had it in the final 5 but oh well!

The first Superhero movie Marvel Studios had control over but under Sony's distribution. It was also the first full feature length movie with Tom Holland as Spider-Man. After how disappointing the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films were, everyone seemed to be a bit sceptical until everyone saw Tom's performance in Civil War. We had no right to be. We should always trust Marvel Studios haha. Not only did Tom really encompass the role of Peter Parker, but the script & story were fantastic and it didn't feel forced! He really fits in with the MCU. I'm really excited to see more of Tom as Spider-Man and I'm hoping that we can see more of Zendaya's character in the future too!

Tom Holland is the third Peter Parker we've seen since the start of the decade and Spider-Man was beginning to become quite the tired character amongst the general public. The past three Spider-Man films made by Sony had mixed or negative reviews and it needed something brand new and fresh (like the character film rights being shared with Disney's Marvel for the first time) to get people excited about the character again. It seemed to really work as Spider-Man: Homecoming was the most successful MCU film of 2017 at the worldwide box office making just over 880 million US dollars (making it the second most successful Spider-Man instalment ever behind only Spider-Man 3). On a personal note, Spider-Man was one of my favourite movies of last year and a lot of that is down to Tom Holland completely nailing the role. It's nice to finally see a teenage version of Peter Parker and being in school still gives a lot of opportunity for some laugh out loud comedy during the house party and homecoming scenes, for example. Of course, it was nice to see the likes of Iron Man and Aunt May pop up again too (and Pepper Potts too!!!!) and Im very excited to see more of Spidey in the upcoming Avengers films. Don't kill him off please so we can get more sequels to this!!!

MOST ATTRACTIVE ACTOR

01. Chris Hemsworth (5 / 1)
02. Timothee Chalamet (4 / 0)
03. Armie Hammer (3 / 4)
03. Ryan Gosling (3 / 4)

05. Zac Efron (2 / 1)
06. Hugh Jackman (1 / 0)
07. Ansel Elgort (0 / 6)

And this year’s winner is Chris Hemsworth!

Chris Hemsworth is pretty attractive but I’d probably choose most people in this category over him! Anyway he looks good in the pics I’ve seen from Thor 3 (tf he has shorter hair now *.*). He got 5 first preference votes here and takes over from another Chris (Pratt) winning last year.

In 2nd place is Buzzjack’s fave Timothee Chalamet who is probably my least fave here so I’m kinda glad Chris won and the both gorgeous Armie & Ryan share third place <3 Ryan was third last year I’m pretty sure as well. I’m shocked Zac Efron didn’t do better than 5th after he is finally starting to look great again in The Greatest Showman and his co-star Hugh Jackman finishes just behind him. In last place is the gorgeous Ansel Elgort who failed to pick up any first preference votes but took the most 2nd preference votes in this category!

Posted by: Nightcrawler Mar 4 2018, 09:04 PM

Loved Spider-Man: Homecoming too! Tom Holland is perfect as Peter Parker and it had a great balance of drama and comedy. I was also very grateful that they bypassed the origin story that we’d seen so many times before. The next Spider-Man movie will take place immediately after Avengers Infinty War Part II so I can’t wait to see that!

MOST ATTRACTIVE ACTRESS

01. Gal Gadot (6 / 5)
02. Margot Robbie (5 / 6)
03. Jennifer Lawrence (3 / 1)
04. Emma Stone (2 / 3)
05. Jessica Chastain (2 / 2)

And this year’s winner is Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot <3

Gal Gadot is beyond stunning and is such a deserving winner! <3 She's gorgeous & she was incredible in Wonder Woman and this is the 1st year that Margot Robbie hasn't won this category ohmy.gif As you can see it was such a close race between the two of them at they pick up over half of both the 1st & 2nd preference votes!

In 2nd place is ofc the aforementioned Margot Robbie who is probs still my ultimate girl crush and she was winning this until the final vote! Into 3rd is Jennifer Lawrence who was actually dead last for most of this but got nearly all the final votes which meant that she came top 3 after nearly winning the previous two years. In 4th and 5th are regular additions to this category Emma Stone & Jessica Chastain who are both stunning as well. Such an amazing category <3

BEST NEWCOMER

01. Timothee Chalamet (5 / 5)
02. Tiffany Haddish (4 / 0)
03. Daniel Kaluuya (3 / 1)
04. Keala Settle (2 / 3)
04. Zendaya (2 / 3)
06. Lucas Hedges (1 / 5)

And ofc the winner here is CMBYN & Lady Bird's Timothee Chalamet!

I can't lie and say I completely get the hype behind Chalamet, he's good but nothing of his has wowed me yet. Anyway he was an obvious winner here and dominated both the 1st and 2nd preference votes. He takes over from Tom Holland who won this category last year (so at least this year we have someone winning I hadn't really heard of before this year!)

In 2nd place, despite being the only nominee here to not gain an acting nomination, Tiffany Haddish slays and nearly came close to winning! She's hilarious in Girls Trip & such a star in the making <3 Daniel Kaluuya is in 3rd after his breakthrough in Get Out and both The Greatest Showman actresses take joint 4th together *.* I didn't know Keala before this year but ofc I knew Zendaya but this was her breakthrough into acting with both Spider-Man & TGS! In last then is Manchester By The Sea & Chalamet's Lady Bird co-star Lucas Hedges who is definitely one of my favourites here and has turned in two terrific performances in those two films I mentioned. He only got 1 first preference vote but scooped up a lot of 2nd preference votes!

An incredible and fantastic movie that is easily one of my 2017 favourites. This is an incredible real-life story with a killer script that deservedly got an Oscar nom. The film is fantastic and has heartfelt moments and laugh-out-loud moments. Holly Hunter in the comedy club is one of the best scenes of 2017 *.* The thing that really elevates this film for me though (bar its script) is its incredible ensemble which is one of the best of 2017. Kumail Nanjiani & Zoe Kazan are incredible together and give terrific performances, Ray Romano is fantastic as Zoe's father and Holly Hunter gave one of the best performances of 2017 which I'm still absolutely beyond gutted didn't gain any recognition at the real Oscars cry.gif A fantastic film that I highly recommend to watch if you haven't seen it yet!!

BEST ACTION FILM

01. Baby Driver (6 / 0)
02. Wonder Woman (4 / 7)
03. Thor: Ragnarok (4 / 3)
04. Spider-Man: Hoecoming (1 / 4)
05. Power Rangers (1 / 1)

What a fabulous winner as Baby Driver is 4th genre film to scoop up a genre award tonight *.*

Baby Driver is one of my favourite films of 2017 also and I'm so glad with how much support it received here. I'm surprised it won this but its so deserved as its incredible <3 This takes over from Captain America: Civil War winning last winner and is a much better winner than that (tho I presume I'm in the minority there kink.gif)

In 2nd place is Wonder Woman that picked up a hella lot of support (including a massive 7 2nd preference noms!!) but couldn't get to the gold just and Thor is just behind with the same amount of 1st preference votes. I'm rly shocked neither of those or Spider-Man (which underwhelmed in 4th with only one first preference vote) took the win here. And finishing dead last here is the very underrated Power Rangers but I suppose it was always doomed in this category </3

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 09:34 PM

Boooo! The first one I'm actually low key upset about lmao. sad.gif I did enjoy it, but it's def one of the more overrated films of last year for me. The chemistry between Ansel and Lily though was fantastic!

'Power Rangers' is very good. Hopefully with the sequel we get to see them in action a bit more! Underrated.

BEST SCI-FI/THRILLER FILM:

01. Get Out (5 / 1)
02. Blade Runner 2049 (5 / 0)
03. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (3 / 5)
04. Thor: Ragnarok (3 / 3)
05. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (1 / 5)

In a surprise, Get Out picks up its 2nd genre win of the evening, just!.

Get Out is a fantastic thriller film and is definitely beyond tense throughout. I'm quite surprised this won here against the two superhero films and the two sci-fi films tbh. This was also 2nd for most of the time but snatched the win on the last vote! This is Get Out's 2nd genre win of the night (after horror) and takes over from last years' Buzzjack fave Arrival.

In 2nd place and just missing out on the win was Sci-Fi Blade Runner 2049 that I still haven't seen but I feel it would've been an inspired winner here. Superhero flicks Guardians 2 and Thor 3 are divided based on 2nd preference votes and both do pretty well as other whereas Star Wars 8 finishes a distant last, a far cry away from its predecessor's win in this category which shows that Buzzjack feels pretty much the same as the rest of the world in regards to SW8.

Another one of my big favourites of 2017, Baby Driver is incredible and thrilling film that has your attention throughout the film. This is another classic Edgar Wright film with fantastic direction, a killer soundtrack and a fantastic script. The sound and the editing were incredible and both scored well deserved Oscar noms (hopefully it'll pick up a win) and the ensemble is also incredible, in particular Elgort & James as the leads <3 I loved this film and I saw this in America where it was filmed and parts of the film were literally places we'd walked in to get to the cinema which was cool af *.*

That should've been Blade Runner's sad.gif (Slight aside but why are 'Sci-Fi & Thriller grouped together when, they're quite different genres no? Sorry for the nitpick, you're doing great so far!)

BEST POSTER FOR A MOVIE RELEASED IN 2017:

01. La La Land (5 / 1)
02. It (4 / 7)
03. mother! (4 / 3)
04. Call Me By Your Name (4 / 2)
05. Get Out (0 / 0)

In one of the closest categories of the night, La La Land just wins in a massive four way battle!

Another win for La La Land and so well deserved *.* The posters for this movie were something else and are absolutely gorgeous and highlight the beautiful cinematography of the film <3 This is the 1st year of this category so this is the 2nd category in which La La Land is the 1st ever winner of!

Just behind are horror flicks It & mother! which had striking marketing with Pennywise and stuff like the heart in the mother! posters. Both are incredible and mother!'s 1st poster is probs my favourite of 2017. Just behind them in 4th is Call Me By Your Name which has good posters but nothing too out-of-the-ordinary so I'm surprised how well it did. And Get Out is probably deserving of its last place here but it really bombs as it's the 2nd film tonight to get no votes in 1st or 2nd preferences. This seems to either be winning or coming last in every category so far!

idek tbh! I think that was just how it was originally suggested so it just stayed like that but we can def looking into changing it round next year if other people agree!

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 09:50 PM

Nope. No news on a sequel yet. Hopefully soon though!

That top poster for IT! Is so good. Very creepy! But yyyyaaas for LLL! Stunning posters. Both of them.

Oh and I'd bundle Thriller with either Action or Horror next year tbh.

BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE ENTIRE YEAR:

01. Call Me By Your Name - Timothee Chalamet (6 / 1)
02. Split - James McAvoy (4 / 2)
03. Jackie - Natalie Portman (3 / 2)
04. Baby Driver - Ansel Elgort (2 / 4)
05. mother! - Jennifer Lawrence (1 / 3)
06. Beauty & The Beast - Emma Watson (1 / 0)
07. Call Me By Your Name - Armie Hammer (0 / 3)

And Timothee wins his 654th award of the night.

There's absolutely no surprise that Timothee won this considering how beloved he is on buzzjack. It is a great performance but I'd probably have him 5th here personally (I've seen all 7 performances for once!). Anyway he was always leading this and took this category pretty easily! This is also a new category this year *.*

In 2nd place is a massive shock as its James McAvoy who couldn't even get a nomination in Best Actor ohmy.gif Anyway he has a lot of fans here as he gets four 1st preference votes which shows how big his snub was in actor! In 3rd is the only female in the top 3, queen Natalie Portman who completely slayed everything in Jackie and gave a phenomenal performance. Ansel Elgort & J-Law take 4th and 5th for two of my favourite performances of 2017 & Emma Watson's lead in B&TB scored a vote at the last minute to save herself from last place! That means in probably one of the biggest shocks of the night, Buzzjack's fave Armie Hammer in Buzzjack's fave CMBYN comes in last place and is the only nominee that failed to pick up any 1st preference votes ohmy.gif He deserved better here.

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 09:55 PM

Natalie Portman and James McAvoy were robbed in that category! sad.gif But I guess Timothée did a fantastic job... but I definitely preferred the other 2 performances.

Michael:
QUOTE
Beauty and the Beast is a 2017 adaptation of the Disney animation of the same name (1991). It stars perennial 'good girl', Emma Watson, as Belle, with newcomer and hipster Dan Stevens starring opposite her in two roles: the Beast and Non-Beast Prince, respectively. It is a big-name affair, counting the voice talents of Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor and Emma Thompson within its cast. These stars gave convincing portrayals of the characters, although it has to be said that no one quite came close to the heights offered by Angela Lansbury's voice-over as 'Mrs. Potts' in the 1991 original animation.

Emma Watson famously discussed bringing more 'feminist' elements to the role and the film as a whole. We can see in this, and in the allusions to gay characters, Gaston and the more openly-gay Lefou, a more modern affair than its original.

The film treads familiar ground, with very little of the plot or backgrounds deviating wildly from the original. All of the characters have returned, the dialogue is similar, songs have not been tinkered with, and the plot follows the same arc and events, although this is to be expected. Whilst there are small additions here and there and extra scenes, the fact is it is a warm tribute, comfortable as an old pair of slippers. I think this film may have surprised a lot of people who may have doubted the results of an animation to live-action remake of a Disney classic. Certainly, the 1.2 billion worldwide Box Office haul stands to show the popularity of this remake.

Beauty and the Beast is at heart a love story, but it also dabbles in exploring the world of misfits. In the first scene, we are introduced to the witch who curses the prince and his rich subjects for refusing to grant her shelter from the storm, a clash of two worlds, rich and poor. If this scene weren't evidence enough, we have the main character, Belle. In this revamped version, Belle is, like her father, an inventor, rather than a dainty Disney princess. She invents a machine that allows her more time to read and teach other young girls how to read, a moment of empowerment. However, this efficient invention is destroyed by the townsfolk, who view it, and the teaching of girls the ability to read, as a threat. Belle is ostracised in this way from her small-town provincial community, which is full of women searching for marriage and little else. Those who eschew the traditional country town's way of life, Belle and the witch, are forgotten and relegated to a marginal existence. Lastly, but perhaps most obviously, we have the Beast himself. He is set apart from the rest of the town, locked away in a castle, due to his non-conformity, here expressed in his appearance.

The film follows the life of Belle, a local inventor and bookworm. Whilst reading, inventing, teaching, and doing daily chores, Belle is chased relentlessly by eat-eating Gaston. Gaston is determined to have Belle as his trophy wife, noting that if she refuses she will be forgotten, just like the other maidens in the town. Belle refuses. After her father goes missing, Belle, replete in her riding boots, sets off to find him. What she discovers is another world from that which she knows back in the village. She finds a castle with a Beast and inanimate objects which become ... animate. She finds her father, locked up by the Beast for all time for stealing a white rose for Belle, and offers herself up as a prisoner in his stead. The father escapes and rushes back to the village with wild stories of a beast in the woods. Gaston uses this to his advantage and has the old man sent to a mental institute, in an effort to leave Belle destitute and dependent ... on Gaston. This act immediately paints the, otherwise hapless but unlikable alpha male, Gaston as the key antagonist. What happens then is the classic 'tale as old as time': Belle escapes, only for the Beast to come to her rescue and be injured in the process. Instead of abandoning him to die, Belle takes him back to the castle and consents to be his prisoner, helping to care for him. There is one caveat, however, an ominous shadow: the Beast must find true love. That is the main stipulation, the curse-breaker. If he does not find true love by the time the petals fall from a red rose, he will become a beast forever, losing his humanity. His friends, the objects, will become objects, as we see with Plumette growing more feathers and the castle walls crumbling as the petals fall.

This is seen by some as a problematic part of the tale. There are some unable to distinguish the plot and subsequent romance from Stockholm Syndrome, a syndrome in which a captive develops feelings for their captors. However, I believe this misses the real point of Beauty and the Beast: true love conquers all. Belle had amble opportunity to escape, but she does not take it. She decides to stay and help, not through obligation, but through kind-hardheartedness. One of her pivotal lines is, 'can a person truly love if they are not free?' This sets up the Beast, returned to strength, allowing her to go and bringing us to the final, dramatic moments of the movie.

The film is a colourful explosion of special effects, wardrobe and an exploration of vividness. All the scenes are crisp, sharp, and with bright, Disney colours at the forefront. Whilst not surprising, it is still heartwarming to see Belle dancing around the ballroom in her quintessential yellow Disney dress. Another highlight is the music. The original Disney songs have not been altered much, but the songs explode into life with larger than life production. The only distraction here is Emma Thompson's forced Cockney accent in the songs. Aside from this, the voice acting, like the songs, is top-notch cinema.

All in all, it is a modern and dramatic reworking of a Disney classic and an absolute fan favourite. Verdict? A must-see, and fun for all the family.

BEST VOICE PERFORMANCE: FEMALE:

01. Beauty & The Beast – Emma Thompson (5 / 1)
02. Sing – Reese Witherspoon (3 / 4)
03. Despicable Me 3 – Kristen Wiig (3 / 2)
04. Loving Vincent – Saoirse Ronan (2 / 3)
05. Paddington 2 – Imelda Staunton (1 / 2)
06. Sing – Tori Kelly (0 / 1)

Rejoice Michael, as Beauty & The Beast finally picks up an award!

Emma Thompson voiced the iconic Mrs Potts in Beauty & The Beast and sung the titular theme and was great as ever. It's not my favourite in this category but she took this quite easily with five 1st preference votes! She takes over from Ellen DeGeneres' iconic turn as Dory winning last year.

In 2nd place is my favourite here with Reese Witherspoon's iconic pig from Sing who sings Shake It Off and is an epic mom *.* Reese & Kristen both did pretty well here, the latter scoring another nom for her iconic turn as Lucy. In 4th is the very inspired nom of QoL Saoirse Ronan for Loving Vincent which had way more support than I was expecting it to have on here. Imelda Staunton's turn as Aunt Lucy in critically acclaimed Paddington 2 also had some support whilst Tori Kelly's elephant in Sing is the only performance to not gain any 1st preference votes here.

Omg yass finally!!

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 10:06 PM

Best choice in what really was a poor year for female voice performance imo. sad.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 4 2018, 10:08 PM

BEST VOICE PERFORMANCE: MALE:

01. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 - Bradley Cooper (7 / 2)
02. Paddington 2 - Ben Whishaw (4 / 2)
03. The LEGO Batman Movie - Will Arnett (2 / 4)
04. Despicable Me 3 - Steve Carell (1 / 2)
05. The LEGO Batman Movie - Michael Cera (0 / 3)

And Cooper picks up a very easy win here!

Bradley Cooper scored seven 1st preference votes to score the superhero's first win of the night for his role as Rocket Racoon. I always expect the Guardians franchise to do better than it has done here (but then the 1st film was against the juggernaut of Gone Girl). Cooper takes over from last year's winner Jason Bateman for Zootropolis which I much preferred to B-Coop oops. (But then this category is rly weak on the whole)

In 2nd place is Ben Whishaw as the titular Paddington and he deserved to win here. One of my favourite voice performances and he is perfect as Paddington, at least he came 2nd place by quite a distance *.* Despite being a previous winner for the same role, and in a year against B-Coop for Guardians as well, Will Arnett underwhelms this year as Batman took centerstage in his own movie only ended up with him coming 3rd. His co-star Michael Cera comes last and in the middle of them is another nearly previous winner Steve Carell (he missed out by like one 2nd preference vote in 2010 iirc) for his iconic turn as Gru!

BEST ANIMATION:

01. The LEGO Batman Movie (6 / 2)
02. Sing (4 / 2)
03. Loving Vincent (3 / 1)
04. Despicable Me 3 (1 / 4)
05. Boss Baby (0 / 2)
05. The LEGO Ninago Movie (0 / 2)

Ew this franchise wins again.

The LEGO Batman Movie was good (and way better than the overrated crap that preceded it) but its still easily the weakest of the 4 films I've seen here so I'm gutted to see it win here with 6 first preference votes. This takes on from the way superior Zootropolis winning this last year. This category also highlights the dreadful year for animation as none of these made it into best picture whereas last year we had like 4 animations in the line-up.

In 2nd place is my favourite film here, the incredibly fun Sing that I've seen a few times and loved every time. The only other competitor here was Loving Vincent which once again surprised me about how much support it picked up on a site like buzzjack! Mainstream animations also got in here and struggled as Despicable Me 3 did poor for the franchise its from and Oscar nominated Boss Baby & inferior Lego film Ninjago both failed to even get one first preference vote.

Wonder Woman is Girl Power. At long last equality reaches the blockbuster superhero movie, and appropriately the one that did is the original comics superhero. When Superman and Batman came along in the 30's the biggest female superhero was Wonder Woman. I read Justice League Of America comics as a kid, and Wonder Woman was very much the only female on an equal footing with the men - so here we are, 75 years plus on, and the 20th biggest grossing movie, the 10th biggest of 2010, and the one most-lauded critically (2nd best of all time, say Rotten Tomatoes) pulls in both male and female viewers.

Quite rightly so. Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Women is a beautifully constructed action movie with a great (largely-female) cast, especially Gal Godot as goddess Diana, and Chris Pine as her first love, American pilot Steve Trevor. Sticking to the comics backstory helps a lot, setting it during the First World War was a terrific idea, as it lets in plenty of social commentary on the World Of Men, and the overall good-natured adventure was also tinged with tragedy and heroism, setting up sequels nicely. It also puts paid to the notion that women can't direct blockbusters. They can. They can be acclaimed, they can be money-spinners. In terms of DC movies, 21st century DC has largely under-achieved compared to the long history of the many many comics with movie potential, and compared to Marvel movies. For once I can look forward to another DC superhero movie without expecting it to be a bit plodding, or re-telling the Batman origin for the yawnsometh time. Hooray For Wonder Woman!

Gone are the days of seeing Linda Carter spin around to get into her Wonder Woman costume, Gal Gadot has brought the iconic Amazon warrior into the new age
of superhero movies and brought her here with a bang.
We got a glimpse of her in Batman vs. Superman, but this is her fist big solo outing, indeed, the first big solo movie for the character not including cartoons.
Gal brings all the qualities of Diana that we as comic nerd need. She has that supreme beauty that we come to expect, she can easily pull off the no nonsense warrior (no doubt thanks to her time in the army) and she can bring the soft human side that sets Diana apart from many other similar women.
Much like Captain America: The First Avenger, the movie is an origins of sorts that takes part during one of history's greatest wars, this time the First World War.
A spy (played rather brilliantly by Chris Pine) crashes onto the secluded island home of the Amazons and brings the news (and enemies) of the great war to their doorstep.
Diana believes this is all to do with the God of War Ares and sets off with Steve to stop him. Here she is thrown head first into the human world. It is a beautiful glimpse into the eyes of a stranger to our war of life and the main comedy of the movie comes from seeing her naivety at these new customs. However, the coomedy never feels forced or undermines the darker tones of the movie.
I won't go too much into the plot of the movie as it really is one that is best explaine dby actually watching it, I could never do it justice. But what I will sa is that the scenes of the War are so vivid and candid that it is har dnot to get emotional, in particular the No Man's Land scene. Seeing a glimpse into how evil and mad the enemy can be is a really chilling moment and you are given a front row seat into the inner workings of some mad geniuses.
Patty Jenkins directs the movie flawlessly and you can tell the entire cast trusted her as they all give it their best and really sell every moment. The background is just as important as the actors and there are some gorgeous shots in the movie, as well as some harrowing ones.
All in all, this stands up against any male led superhero movie and proves that woman can lead their own movies with little to no help from men. Hopefully we now see some more solo female movies. Thankfully we are getting Captain Marvel soon, very much the Marvel side of the Wonder Woman/DC coin.

The Lego Batman Movie was by far the highlight of an incredibly poor year for Animated movies. Lego Ninjago Movie is good fun too!

Yyyyaaasssss for B-Coop! wub.gif His voice work for Rocket is fantastic and Will Arnett might actually be my fave Batman!

BEST LOOK & STYLE:

01. Beauty & The Beast (4 / 2)
02. Blade Runner 2049 (4 / 1)
02. Call Me By Your Name (4 / 1)

04. La La Land (3 / 5)
05. The Greatest Showman (1 / 4)
05. The Florida Project (1 / 2)

And in another one of the closest races of the year, B&TB just triumphs over two films by one 2nd preference vote ohmy.gif

Beauty & The Beast is definitely a deserving winner here. The production design is something else and the costumes are absolutely gorgeous and the film is an absolute marvel to look at *.* I saw this in IMAX and the style & look of the film is stunning. This is the last of the new categories tonight, hope y’all liked the new additions!

In joint 2nd place is Call Me By Your Name (again!) & Blade Runner 2049. The latter aced it on the cinematography & visual sides of things and looked stunning from the trailers and the former had the stunning setting of Italy and looked great as well. In 4th place is my fave La La Land which ofc looked perfect and aced the production design & costumes in particular. In 5th is The Greatest Showman which aced in the same areas as LLL and in 6th place is The Florida Project which had absolutely stunning cinematography & looked incredibly visually. My 3 fave films of 2017 being the bottom three here </3

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 10:49 PM

La La Land or Blade Runner shoulda got that one for me. But it's another category in which I can see why each nominee was nominated so can't begrudge too much! tongue.gif

Posted by: Nightcrawler Mar 4 2018, 10:54 PM

I liked Beauty and the Beast but the animated version was the first film I ever saw in the cinema, so it'll never be as good as that for me. I think I would have wanted the Greatest Showman to win this one.

BEST SCENE IN A MOVIE:

01. La La Land – Epilogue (5 / 5)
02. Wonder Woman – No Man Land’s Scene (5 / 4)
03. It – Opening Scene (3 / 3)
04. Manchester by the Sea – Lee’s House Burns Down (2 / 2)
05. Call Me By Your Name – Peach Scene (2 / 1)

The best scene of 2017 winning *.* and another win for La La Land <3

Epilogue is a 7 minute masterpiece and is the most perfect scene of 2017 <3 The visual aspects is incredible, the storytelling is gorgeous & the scene has one of the best pieces of score music attached to it. This scene made me feel so many different emotions and is pure perfection. WD Buzzjack <3 <3 Last years winner was the iconic airport scene from civil war!

Another very close battle as Wonder Woman comes marginally in 2nd with its No Man’s Land Scene that misses out by one 2nd preference vote. It’s a good scene but doesn’t compare to epilogue for me so I’m glad it didn’t win. It’s iconic opening scene which has been parodied all over the internet is frightening af but a great scene and is wholly deserving of a bronze position here. Lee’s house burning down is such a powerful scene in Manchester by the Sea and is a really inspired nom here that pays off as it comes 4th. I don’t know what I’m more shocked at, CMBYN being last in a category or the fact it was the peach scene that’s been talked about non-stop that saw it comes last place. Ngl I’m glad about this, I really disliked the peach scene and it felt like I was watching some weird fetish thing, no thx.

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 4 2018, 11:00 PM

Yesssss. I was torn between that and "no man's land" for my first preference so, although I voted NML first, I'm so happy about LLL winning this. heart.gif

BEST MOVIE COUPLE:

01. Call Me By Your Name – Armie Hammer & Timothee Chalamet (8 / 1)
02. La La Land – Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling (3 / 5)
03. Wonder Woman – Chris Pine & Gal Gadot (2 / 2)
04. Wonder – Julia Roberts & Owen Wilson (1 / 3)
05. Baby Driver – Ansel Elgort & Lily James (1 / 0)
05. The Greatest Showman – Zac Efron & Zendaya (1 / 0)
07. The Big Sick – Kumail Nanjiani & Zoe Kazan (0 / 3)

No shocker here as CMBYN scores one of the biggest landslides of the evening.

Armie & Timothee are fab together and have great chemistry which sees them easily dominate this category with 8 first preference votes, more than double of 2nd place. They are also way better than Morena Baccarin & Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool which somehow won this category last year.

In 2nd place and taking many of the 2nd preference votes was the 3rd teaming of Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling in La La Land; their chemistry was incredible as ever and they were such a fabulous couple. Gal & Chris worked perfectly off each other in Wonder Woman and are the only couple to get more than one 1st preference vote in 3rd place. In 4th we saw the return of Julia Roberts & Owen Wilson in Wonder who were an incredible couple and worked perfectly together. In joint 5th we see Buzzjack faves Baby Driver & The Greatest Showman, I’m shocked Zac & Zendaya did so badly considering themselves & the film’s popularity. The only couple to not pick up any 1st preference votes is my 2nd fave here (Kumail & Zoe in The Big SicK) who are incredible together but at least they got a few 2nd preference votes!

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS:

01. Thor: Ragnarok (4 / 2)
02. Star Wars: The Last Jedi(4 / 1)
03. Beauty & The Beast (3 / 0)
04. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2 / 4)
05. Wonder Woman (1 / 5)
05. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (1 / 3)

Another very close race sees Thor pick up its first win of the evening!

I haven’t seen Thor but I’m guessing the visual effects are very good as they usually are for the Marvel superhero films! This takes over Disney’s The Jungle Book which won for its incredible visual effects last year!

In 2nd place and just missing out on the win by one 1st preference vote is Star Wars 8, showing Buzzjack haven’t completely given up on the franchise yet! Beauty & The Beast also does very well in 3rd whilst superhero films making up 4th to 6th. I’m surprised Wonder Woman didn’t do better and Guardians is rly struggling.

Like it or not, of all the films released in 2017, this will certainly go down in a history as one to refer back to. What starts off as a simple budding romance of a young couple taking their first steps of being introduced to the family soon becomes a bit more sinister when Chris (played expertly by clear future star, Daniel Kaluuya) discovers his girlfriend's family might be a little bit more sinister than he first thought. Get Out was significant for bringing the horror genre back to a world of contemporary realism with it's smart use of social commentary and generally being an extremely entertaining movie to watch with fantastic, crowd pleasing performances and a gripping pace that will leave you breathless. One of the biggest surprise hits of the year and for very good reason. Maybe think twice the next time you're introducing your new lover to your parents

BEST HERO

01. Wonder Woman – Wonder Woman (6,4)
02. Spider Man: Homecoming – Spider Man (4,4)
03. Paddington 2 – Paddington (2,1)
03. Thor: Ragnarok – Thor (2,1)

05. Star Wars 8 – Leia (1,4)

There were three actual superheroes nominated in this category this year so it was always likely that one of those was going to take the award and it must come as no surprise that cultural phenomenon Wonder Woman takes home the win after the massive year she had last year. She became a box office juggernaut with her solo film and completely stole the show in Justice League as well later in the year.

Marvel superheroes Thor and Spider-Man put up a good fight here too but their good looks and charm were no match for Gal Gadot's character. It seems Buzzjack is very excited to see more from those two though in the upcoming Avengers team-up film. Less literal heroes Paddington and Leia also do decently despite being slightly more inspired choices. I do hope we get to see more from Paddington in the future because I've absolutely adored both films so far, one of the sweetest movie characters ever created in my opinion wub.gif

06. Paddington 2 – Paddington (1,3)

We see two repeat nominees from the Best Hero category here but Wonder Woman doesn't quite clinch the win here despite receiving the most overall votes. Instead, Elio from Call My Be Your Name performed by Timothée Chalamet walks home with the title of Buzzjack's favourite movie character of 2017. I imagine he is a character that a lot of Buzzjack's demographic can relate to in terms of growing up and exploring/accepting your sexuality and therefore topped the rankings of many who voted here (including me, I believe).

I thought Beca was quite a shock nomination here (especially as Fat Amy is definitely my character highlight from all of the Pitch Perfect movies!) but she manages to grab the bronze medal here getting the same number of first preference votes as Wonder Woman herself! Pennywise plagued the nightmares of me for a couple of weeks after seeing the film so that's certainly testament to how strong a character he was too, I wish he had done slightly better in the votes here!

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME

Jonjo
QUOTE
Call Me By Your Name is a beautifully shot, directed and stunningly adapted movie about two bisexuals who find a Summer romance. Set in the 80's and in a beautiful location in Italy, it is a film that gets you thinking afterwards. Timothée and Armie's chemistry throughout this film is electric. One of the greatest performances by an on screen couple of all time, imo. It's really refreshing to see a homosexual relationship be told in such a natural and beautiful way. The peach scene is one that will go down as such a pivotal scene in the future. Not only were the two leads exceptional, but the supporting roles were just as strong. Espcially Michael Stuhlbarg and Amira Casar.

Thank you very much to Jonjo for that lovely commentary heart.gif

MOST UNDERRATED MOVIE

01. Hidden Figures (3,1)
02. Ingrid Goes West (3,0)
03. Gifted (2,3)
04. Wind River (2,2)
04. A Monster Calls (2,2)
06. Life (2,1)
07. Happy Death Day (1,4)

As far as underrated goes, I'm not sure that box office smash hit Best Picture Academy Award nominees are the first thoughts that pop in to my mind but nevertheless Hidden Figures steals the crown here on second preference votes. Saying that, it was actually my favourite of the Best Picture line-up last year and obviously didn't win the actual award so I guess it was slightly underrated for me.

I haven't personally seen Ingrid Goes West (or even a trailer for it) but I've heard great things about it from my fellow Movies co-mods here on Buzzjack so I have been meaning to catch up on it for quite a while. My own first preference vote in this was Wind River which was a really thrilling little film that went largely under the radar. In a world where the film hadn't been distributed by The Weinstein company, I'm sure it could've been much more of an awards contender - especially for its excellent script, cinematography and lead performance from Jeremy Renner.

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 5 2018, 06:21 PM

CMBYN is seriously stunning. I'm surprised I'm the only one to submit a write up for it as I feel there are others who probably loved it even more than I did.

Best Hero was always a toss up between those three superheroes for me. Thor just missed out though despite it being my fave film of the 3 </3

Best character was always gonna be Elio, but I woulda preferred Wonder Woman or Pennywise to have got it.

BEST ENSEMBLE

01. The Greatest Showman (5,4)
02. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (5,3)
03. Get Out (3,3)
04. Pitch Perfect 3 (3,2)
05. Baby Driver (1,5)

The Greatest Showman appears to be one of Buzzjack's absolute favourite movies of the past year and it manages to narrowly beat out Guardians of the Galaxy to take away the award for Best Ensemble. Aside from the music, the large cast working together so brilliantly is certainly one of the most impressive things about the film. There's not much that can put a smile on your face quite like a group of misfits singing and dancing about what makes them unique, it all makes for an incredibly uplifting movie. The cast certainly has its highlights (Keala Settle for "This Is Me" alone, of course) but the cast as a large ensemble really is special.

Guardians only just misses out on gold here and the ensemble got even stronger in this instalment with the addition of Yondu, Nebula and Mantis to the team. They provided even more laugh-out-loud moments and badass powers so I can't wait to see more from this set of characters in the upcoming Avengers film.

WONDER

Josh
QUOTE
Wonder was one of the biggest box office surprises of 2017, seemingly coming out of nowhere to make almost $300 million worldwide. I guess it should come as less of a surprise due to the success of the book (which I've been meaning to read ever since bawling my eyes out at the film adaptation) since its release in 2012. It follows the story of a young boy named Auggie and his struggles in school with bullying and self-confidence after being born with facial defects. Jacob Tremblay received excellent reviews for his portrayal of the lead character and it was so nice to see him bag another excellent role after he was such a shining star in Room a couple of years back. Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson are two movie veterans now and delivered the more emotional scenes perfectly too, almost everything Roberts said had me welling up yet again. All of that helped make for one of the most uplifting movie endings I've ever seen and I walked out with red puffy eyes feeling incredibly inspired. I'd definitely recommend this if you haven't watched this yet and make sure to look out for more from Tremblay who is surely set for even bigger things in the future.
Jonjo
QUOTE
'Wonder' is a story based on true events about a boy named Auggie who suffers from Treacher Collins Syndrome. Auggie is played by the super talented Jacob Tremblay [Room] and this story, it really tugs on your heart strings. I cried at least 3 times throughout the film. It's a story where it points out bullying, is about friendships in school and overcoming the obstacles and troubles of them. Jacob's performance is fantastic and honestly, this movie should be shown in school during Anti-Bullying awareness week or something.

QUOTE
While Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts were the two big names starring in Wonder--and both did an excellent job as the parents of main character Auggie--it really is all the kids that shine in this movie, a handful of impressive performances and hopefully we'll be seeing more of them in the near future, especially Jacob Tremblay (Auggie), Izabela Vidovic (Via), and Noah Jupe (Jack Will)! Another great thing about Wonder was that it didn't just focus on Auggie, it also gave back stories for Via, Jack Will and Miranda which made them all such endearing characters. Overall this far exceeded my expectations, it was a very feel-good movie with so much to love about it! wub.gif

Call Me By Your Name is overrated trash, I can't believe how weel it's doing

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 5 2018, 06:47 PM

I had the ensemble top 2 switched. But deserving win for TGS wub.gif

'Wonder' is so good! The ending is so feel good. heart.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 7 2018, 10:21 PM

Yasss Wonder Woman *.* Would probably have chosen every other character for best character oops. All the underrated movies slay I'm not too bothered there. Yasss at TGS winning ensemble, it snatched it from GOTG2 at the last min which would have been such an ironic winning considering it only got nominated through tiebreak!

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 7 2018, 10:26 PM

Also this should hopefully be done by tomorrow, we are splitting the categories between us rn *.*

These are the remaining categories: Any predictions/hopes?!?!
Adaptation
Script
Director
Supporting Actor
Lead Actor
Supporting Actress
Lead Actress
Picture

(I don't think I've missed anything else there, please pick me up if I have! kink.gif

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 7 2018, 11:21 PM

I think Adaptation is obvious, isn't it? Haha. I'm also gonna say 'Call Me By Your Name' may actually get best picture too! Which I would be happy with! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Josh! Mar 8 2018, 12:01 AM

Three more categories from me tonight if people are awake? x

Posted by: Josh! Mar 8 2018, 12:07 AM

BEST ADAPTATION OF A SOURCE MATERIAL

01. Call Me By Your Name (7,2)
02. Wonder (3,3)
03. Wonder Woman (3,2)
04. Thor: Ragnarok (2,3)
05. It (1,4)

As Jonjo says, I think best adaptation always had a pretty obvious winner here on Buzzjack as Call Me By Your Name bags another award. I'm sure it'll have slightly more competition in the best script category where original screenplays are also in contention. The film recently just won the real life Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay so it's not just Buzzjack that can appreciate just how well James Ivory turned the book into a movie script.

Wonder and It are the only two nominees based on novels or books but I've read neither of those so can't really comment on how they compare to the film versions. Both had excellent scripts though and I'd be very interested in reading them in the future (I do wish It was a bit shorter though, it looks like it would take a lifetime to read drama.gif). Comic book adaptations Wonder Woman and Thor also picked up a few votes but both characters have been seen on the big screen before so we always knew they would translate well on-screen.

Posted by: Josh! Mar 8 2018, 12:21 AM

BEST SCRIPT

01. Call Me By Your Name (7,2)
02. La La Land (4,0)
03. Manchester by the Sea (3,2)
04. Get Out (2,5)
05. The Big Sick (0,4)

Oops, even the original screenplays being included here can't stop Call Me By Your Name destroying the competition again to win yet another award. We have three real Oscar screenplay winners in this category (including Call Me By Your Name) but none are no match for what is clearly an absolute Buzzjack favourite.

Manchester by the Sea and Get Out are the two most recent Original Screenplay winners but even they come below La La Land which lost that very award at last year's ceremony. I wouldn't say the script is exactly the most strong thing about La La Land to be completely honest so I'm a bit shocked at it coming higher than the likes of The Big Sick and Get Out which have some of the wittiest and most clever dialogue of recent years in my opinion.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

01. Call Me By Your Name – Armie Hammer (5,4)
02. Call Me By Your Name – Michael Stuhlbarg (3,3)
02. Manchester By The Sea – Lucas Hedges (3,3)

04. The Florida Project – Willem Dafoe (2,3)
05. The Greatest Showman – Zac Efron (2,2)
06. Wonder Woman – Chris Pine (2,1)

That Call Me By Your Name reign does not let up as it takes home yet another award this year here on Buzzjack. In fact, it manages to boast the top two positions here in a category with two real-life Oscar nominees in Lucas Hedges and Willem Dafoe. It seems that Armie managed to perfectly capture how Oliver was imagined in the head's of everyone reading the book and was one of the biggest snub shock stories of this year's awards season. Stuhlbarg's expertly delivered monologue towards the end of the film helps him secure a silver medal here.

Matching Stuhlbarg on first and second preference votes is Lucas Hedges who popped up on everybody's radar last year with his heartwarming and surprisingly humorous performance in Manchester by the Sea. The two more shocking nominees here being Zac Efron and Chris Pine don't fare all to well here as they land in the bottom two. I wouldn't say Efron was all that special in The Greatest Showman to be honest but I did like that Pine made it here, I just couldn't find enough space to include him in my own votes.

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 9 2018, 07:50 AM

Deserved top 2 there for CMBYN. wub.gif Both unfairly snubbed at the actual Oscars. Lucas was OK in MBTS, but I wasn't blown away in all honesty. But then again, that film did absolutely nothing for me anyway.

best actress coming up now!

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 10 2018, 09:25 PM

BEST ACTRESS

01. La La Land - Emma Stone (4 / 6)
02. Wonder Woman - Gal Gadot (4 / 2)
03. Jackie - Natalie Portman (4 / 1)
04. Hidden Figures - Taraji P. Henson (3 / 4)
05. mother! - Jennifer Lawrence (2 / 2)
06. Baby Driver - Lily James (2 / 1)
07. Ingrid Goes West - Aubrey Plaza (0 / 2)

And the Oscars repeat itself here *.*

Emma Stone gave one of my favourite performances of all time in La La Land and I'm so glad she scooped the win here just *.* This is Emma's 2nd Buzzjack Oscar win, and I believe that makes her the only actress to ever win two acting awards! Her performance is incredible & so deserving of this Oscar and the real life Oscar <3 <3

In 2nd is Gal Gadot who gave us a killer superhero in Wonder Woman & Natalie Portman's incredible portayal of Jackie takes 3rd. Taraji does way better than I was expecting to clinch fourth place and J-Law gave another incredible performance in mother! Lily James was also fab in Baby Driver & Aubrey Plaza was great but these two are unsurprisingly last in a very strong category. A great category full of incredible performances <3

Jack & Josh will be finishing the rest of the results over the next couple of days.

Natalie Portman would've been an absolutely deserving winner for 'Jackie' though. She was the reason why that film was watchable. Gal just is WW too.

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

Regina
QUOTE

Before we begin, let's get one thing straight; Casey Affleck >>>>>>> Ben Affleck. He is younger, hotter, better at acting and less of a knob.
He should have won an Oscar long ago, but really, there was no way he wasn't going to get one one day and there isn't a better movie for him to get one than this. He has such a gift for playing broken, emotional characters, he acts it out with every fibre of his being and it shows through and you as the audience cannot help but be drawn right in and feel some of his turmoil.
A very emotional and often dark story, Casey plays Lee, a man who works as a handyman and lives a very solitary life. After his brother dies, he is given custody of his teen nephew. Through flashbacks we get to see why Lee is the way he is and it is a major gut punch; a combination of negligence and drunkesness caused a fire that killed his three young children and in the aftermath he attempted suicide. (Spoilered incase you have yet to see it)
The relationship between uncle and nephew goes through many ups and downs and a reunion with his ex wife causes Lee to spiral slightly out of control.
Despite the heavy movie there is a glimmer of hope towards the end which makes it all worth it in the end.
The scenery in the movie matches the tone so perfectly; grim an wintery but it eventually begins to thaw out.
Other than Casey, the other main powerhouse is Michelle Williams who plays his ex-wife and the scenes they share ought to be shown in college to show how acting is meant to be. Casey and Michelle got a slew of award recognition with Casey winning almost everything and rightfully so, but I wish Michelle got a few more wins too.

QUOTE
One of the big award winners at last year's Oscar season was one of the most brooding, miserable yet beautiful dramas of the year. Starring a masterstroke award winning performance from Casey Affleck as Lee, a man who has lost almost everything as is gradually revealed and his subdued years attempting to reconnect with his nephew, it's hard to imagine a portrayal of grief so better presented. The glorious yet empty landscape adds perfectly to the feeling of sadness, there's no magic happy endings here, so convolutions, it's a completely raw, entirely realistic portrait of loss and the grim aftermath that that can lead to. A stunning watch.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

Jonjo
QUOTE
From one musical to another, The Greatest Showman. It's not as "classy" or as "chic" as La La Land, but it's just as good and just as powerful. It's a lot more accessible too. Telling the story of P. A. Barnum and his circus of misfits, TGS is one of the most uplifting, joyous, feel good and just outright enjoyable movies not only of the last year, but of all time for me. It just doesn't get old. The songs are tailor made for radio/infectious pop smashes in their own right, but the story is just so heart warming that they fit perfectly and don't sound out of place, despite them being "modern" in their sound. I honestly can't tell you enough just how much I adore this movie. Going to see it for a 5th time on Saturday... Yes, it's THAT rewatchable!
Sam
QUOTE
Another terrific movie musical rounding off 2017 *.* The ensemble is fabulous and all work great together, the songs and routines are showstopping and I had the biggest smile on my face throughout the entire film. The highlight ofc is the wonderful This Is Me which Keala nails every single time and is one of the best movie songs in a while! <3

BEST DIRECTOR

01. Call Me By Your Name - Luca Guadagnino (6 / 3)
02. La La Land - Damien Chazelle (5 / 1)
03. Baby Driver - Edgar Wright (3 / 4)
04. Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan (2 / 5)
05. Wonder Woman - Patty Jenkins (1 / 2)
06. Get Out - Jordan Peele (0 / 2)

And in another close battle between LLL & CMBYN, the latter prevails.

Another win for Call Me By Your Name tonight. Luca's directing was very good but it wasn't my favourite of the year. Anywhere there's no denying its popularity here as it picks up a third of the first preference votes. He succeeds Denis Villeneuve's win last year for Arrival.

In 2nd is actual Oscar winner Damien Chazelle who also deserved the win here, his direction of LLL is incredible and he slays here. Edgar Wright takes 3rd for his great direction in Baby Driver whilst Christopher Nolan does his usual here in picking up many 2nd preference votes but not enough first preference votes to make a significant impact. Despite ruling nominations, Patty Jenkins can only come 5th here and Jordan Peele is the only director that failed to pick up any first preference votes.

Posted by: UltraReputation Mar 19 2018, 01:39 PM

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

01. Fences - Viola Davis (4 / 2)
02. Get Out - Allison Williams (3 / 2)
03. The Big Sick - Holly Hunter (3 / 1)
04. Hidden Figures - Janelle Monae (2 / 4)
05. The Greatest Showman - Zendaya (2 / 3)
06. The Greatest Showman - Keala Settle (2 / 1)
07. Manchester By The Sea - Michelle Williams (1 / 3)

Mimicking the Best Actress race, it's a very very close battle here with the Oscar winner prevailing.

Viola Davis takes Fences first and only win of the night for her powerhouse of a performance which she also won the real life Oscar for. Viola is incredible in Fences and deserves all the acclaim she gets and I'm so glad she wins here *.* This year we revert back to a more Oscar-y performance winning in this category for the first time since 2013 when Lupita won! (Margot won for Suicide Squad in 2016, Alicia for Ex_Machina in 2015, Emily Blunt for Edge of Tomorrow in 2014).

In 2nd is Allison Williams' fantastic performance in Get Out which in my view is the best performance from the film and deserved more attention in the real life awards and in 3rd is brutally snub by Oscars, and my favourite of the category, Holly Hunter in the wonderful The Big Sick who is pitch perfect. Now for a lil interesting fact for you, everyone that missed out on a medal position here has scored a UK top 75 hit in the singles chart this year! (albeit three of them for the same film kink.gif). Janelle Monae was the highlight of Hidden Figures and I'm shocked how well she did here but its deserved, The Greatest Showman duo of Zendaya & Keala take 5th and 6th for their great performances and I'm really surprised Michelle Williams came last here, she deserved better.

Posted by: Jonjo Mar 19 2018, 01:40 PM

No surprise with that one. Deserved, but I'd have preferred Damien to have got that one.

Edit: No surprise at Viola either. Janelle getting some sort of recognition though wub.gif I feel like she's really under appreciated for her role in 'Hidden Figures'.

BEST ACTOR

01. Call Me By Your Name - Timothee Chalamet (8 / 3)
02. Manchester By The Sea - Casey Affleck (4 / 1)
03. La La Land - Ryan Gosling (2 / 6)
04. Baby Driver - Ansel Elgort (2 / 2)
04. Get Out - Daniel Kaluuya (2 / 2)
06. Wonder - Jacob Tremblay (0 / 2)

Yeah it was never going to be anyone else was it.

Timothee did give a very good performance (and don't kill me) but I think it's the weakest of this category oops. Anyway he takes nearly half of the first preference votes here in a complete landslide. This marks the 3rd year in a row of an underwhelming performance winning this category for me (after Gyllenhaal & Di Caprio). However the lil switch up this year is that Chalamet actually dominated both nominations & voting in this category which is unusual for this category (iirc Di Caprio was last in the category in the nomination stages and Ryan Reynolds, who would've been a worse winner than all three that acc won, dominated the nominations in 2016)
Also this is the 2nd year in a row that the male & supporting male performances have been won by the same film (CMBYN this year, Nocturnal Animals in 2016)

Anyway let's get more positive. Casey Affleck gave an incredible Oscar-winning performance in Manchester By The Sea and I'm glad it did well here as I wasn't expecting him to get a medal position here. Two time winner Ryan Gosling takes 3rd and continues the La La Land trend this evening of getting loads of 2nd preference votes and is of my favourite in this category whilst Ansel & Daniel take joint 4th for their well-reviewed performances in two of our Best Picture nominees. In last place is Jacob Tremblay who was great in Wonder but just couldn't compete in this category, I'm glad he got a couple of last minute 2nd preference votes tho.

06. Baby Driver (1 / 2)
06. Manchester By The Sea (1 / 2)
06. Wonder Woman (1 / 2)
09. Beauty & The Beast (1 / 1)
10. Spider Man: Homecoming (0 / 1)
10. The Big Sick (0 / 1)
10. Wonder (0 / 1)

Yeah it was never going to be anyone else was it. (again). I was thinking about dragging this out for tension but there really isn't any point!

Call Me By Your Name completely dominates this year and it doesn't stop here at all. Surprisingly in 2nd is Get Out which puts up a very strong performance here and the two Buzzjack fave musicals take 3rd and 4th, I'm kinda shocked La La Land didn't get a medal position sad.gif Some more shocks here as Thor ends up being the highest superhero film and takes a top 5 spot whilst Wonder Woman kinda underperforms, I was expecting that to have a way better night than it did. Manchester also did better than I expected whereas Baby Driver ended up where I thought it would. Beauty & The Beast actually has another fan apart from Michael which means it takes 9th and we have a three-way tie for 10th this year as finally for the first time in forever no Best Pic nominee has 0,0. Well it was v. close as Spider-Man got its one 2nd preference vote on the last vote, a shame cos its easily the worst here and deserved to be last. I'm not surprised at The Big Sick or Wonder flopping here but both deserved better!

Thanks for everyone who's commented, voted and submitted the amazing commentaries and its been another great year cheer.gif heart.gif wub.gif

Wonder Woman def underperformed! I was fully expecting it to trounce every other Superhero movie this year at least, but it got put out quite a bit! ohmy.gif

A deserving winner. Wasn't my first choice, but I feel like it was a strong year last year. 'La La Land' woulda been my preference, and I'm kinda shocked but not really that it didn't get a medal position.

Thank you all SO MUCH for this again. I look forward to this every year wub.gif

Still haven't seen CMBYN so I can't really comment on it's domination tongue.gif Happy to see Baby Driver come hoem with at least one win though cheer.gif Totally underrated movie. Thanks for hosting Ultra! wub.gif
