From what I could tell of the story, the man who launched an attack on his son seemed to have severe anger management issues and has been done before for violent acts, it was a self defence thing.

Of all the things to argue about! Almost sounds like a scene from Kingsman, when the step-father was being abusive and the young lad decide that enough was enough.
