BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Sound of 2018 / artists to watch

Posted by: SevenSeize 14th November 2017, 07:56 PM

bbc does their new artists thing, 27th november is when it's out. who do you expect to appear? what singers/bands are you looking forward to in twenty eighteen? discuss away~

Tom Walker - was on Radio 1's "brit list" thing before i'd even heard of him so obviously they're quite keen
Pale Waves - kinda like The 1975 but with a goth frontwoman. There's A Honey is undeniable tho
Khalid (yes he'd be eligible)
Sigrid - hard to tell if she'll be a commercial success but she's got Radio 1 backing
Not3s
Billie Eilish - one of my new faves, the "dont smile at me" ep is really really cool *.*
Superorganism - wishful thinking maybe but they're one of the most fascinating new bands around!
Yxng Bane
Rex Orange County
Lewis Capaldi
+ loads of hip hop/urban artists (Fredo, Lotto Boyzz?)

ones i'd like to see on there but most likely won't be:
Confidence Man - three killer singles, perched for more !
Sofi Tukker - that double whammy of Fuck They & Best Friend SHOULD make them deserving rite?
Fickle Friends - had their shining moment this year with Hello Hello wub.gif can't see them making a proper breakthrough sadly

Expecting it will be a very hip-hop heavy list indeed! I really couldn't predict specific artists though, I'm a little out of touch with what the new hyped artists are lol ~

Possibly this MoStack person? Since he had a couple of biggish features already. x

Posted by: scratchy23 14th November 2017, 08:27 PM

Would Zak Abel be eligible?

He's had an album that charted at #100 out but never had a top 100 single. Aside from his Gorgon City feature 'Unmissable' that charted at #19

Posted by: THEO. 14th November 2017, 08:43 PM

When did they change the eligibility from lead artist of a top 20 single/album to top 10? Seriously hope this doesn't result in a Khalid nomination. Although if he is nominated, he's unlikely to win as they usually pick British artists.

I'd love a nomination for Sigrid but I doubt she'd make the top five.

Posted by: danVember 14th November 2017, 09:11 PM

I'm expecting a British male urban singer to win it this year seeing as that's where the trends are going, Not3s seems likely to get big, could see 'My Lover' being a big early 2018 hit - though I think Sound Of has become increasingly less relevant over the past few years... what exactly happened with RAY BLK? Though I suppose she was never going to be big, she only released two singles in 2017 and no album, and no R1 playlisting.

Posted by: ML Hammer95 14th November 2017, 09:19 PM

Agree with Not3s and Yxng Bane, both are probably next in line to fully cross over although that depends how long the trend for UK afro rap will continue. Hopefully 'My Lover' becomes a big chart hit for Not3s, it certainly sounds like it could. More recommendations from me are:

Avelino (biggest songs: 1 in a Million/Energy)
MoStack (biggest songs: Liar Liar/Screw & Brew)
Kojo Funds (biggest songs: Dun' Talkin/Warning)
Lotto Boyzz (biggest songs: No Don/Birmingham)
Mr Eazi (biggest songs: Leg Over/Skin Tight)

Posted by: cqmerqn 14th November 2017, 09:22 PM

Mr Eazi is good on RAYEs new song

He's worked with quite an impressive list already. I can think of RAYE, Yungen, Major Lazer, French Montana, Stefflon Don and Ty Dolla Sign this year alone.

Posted by: jafetsigfinns 14th November 2017, 09:38 PM

Omg Sigrid and Billy Eilish featuring would be amazing.

Sigrid's new song "Strangers" is a bop if I ever heard one.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 14th November 2017, 10:18 PM

Would love to see Confidence Man get a nomination, although I don't think they have enough mainstream attention yet to warrant a nod.

One possible band who could get a nod are The Magic Gang. They've had a few songs playlisted by Radio 1 without charting, so I imagine they're in with a shot.

Lmao I genuinely forgot RAY BLK was a thing and thought RAYE had won Sound of 2017 :')

It does indeed seem that this list has become significantly less relevant in recent years unfortunately.

Posted by: BridgeCow 14th November 2017, 10:38 PM

Wow yeah I completely forgot about RAY BLK too, you’d think she would have tried to capitalise on the publicity or something?

Posted by: SevenSeize 14th November 2017, 11:13 PM

Ray's still unsigned as far as i know, i get the impression she wasn't exactly striving for commercial success!

oh yeah The Magic Gang crossed my mind too, hoping the indie/rock representation on the list isn't too slim

Posted by: DalekTurret32 14th November 2017, 11:22 PM

Milk Teeth, Black Honey, Shame, Superorganism, Princess Nokia, Willie J Healey, The Magic Gang, Marmozets, probably Kojo Funds or Not3s.

Dunno, maybe

I am gonna put Fickle Friends into the mix

Posted by: Jupiteer 15th November 2017, 03:09 PM

Slightly surprised to not see Taya on this list (some of you will know her from BJSC) after just working wih Yxng Bane, but it seems Sound Of is going for people who've been active longer.

Khalid appearing after workin with Calvin Harris earlier this year seems like a bit of a farce tbh.

Posted by: Bjork 15th November 2017, 03:21 PM

anything but khalid please :/

Has Grace Carter been on a Sound Of list. Her and Taya are real stars

Posted by: lewistgreen 15th November 2017, 08:10 PM

Very much want to see Fickle Friends and Sigrid in there, maybe even Bicep too

These are just predictions, not the actual list!!

Posted by: Lenny 16th November 2017, 11:10 AM

Those moaning about the potential of Khalid given appearing with Calvin Harris: what about when Sam Smith won after working with both Disclosure and Naughty Boy with 2 MASSIVE hits? It's all about their solo careers. Khalid seems pretty talented to me smile.gif

Posted by: danVember 16th November 2017, 11:59 AM

I'm sure people moaned about Sam Smith for being too obvious of a choice.

Posted by: Brébino 16th November 2017, 04:57 PM

I mean Khalid is pretty big as a solo artist already as well (moreso in the States than here but he's getting there). Also kinda curious to be pointing out the Calvin Harris thing when their song together missed the top 40 while he's had 2 top 10 hits recently with other features lol ;o

Sound of 2018:
Alma
Billie Eilish
IAMDB
Jade Bird
Khalid
Lewis Capaldi
Nilufer Yanya
Not3s
Pale Waves
Rex Orange County
Sam Fender
Sigrid
Superorganism
Tom Walker
Yaeji
Yxng Bane

Superorganism, Rex Orange and Billie cheer.gif

Posted by: BrasselsSprouts 27th November 2017, 12:12 AM

Yaeji and Pale Waves *.*

Posted by: SevenSeize 27th November 2017, 12:15 AM

also all 10 of my op predictions ended up being correct #PSYCHIC7

Posted by: UltraReputation 27th November 2017, 12:16 AM

Jade Bird & Sigrid <3

Posted by: cqmerqn 27th November 2017, 12:22 AM

Sigrid!

Posted by: HarryApa 27th November 2017, 01:59 AM

That's quite a good list tbh wub.gif

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌴 27th November 2017, 03:12 AM

Sigrid! dance.gif

Posted by: ML Hammer95 27th November 2017, 12:02 PM

Surprised to see only two rappers on there... considering the year they've had I would have thought there'd be more than just Not3s and Yxng Bane here.

Pleasantly surprised to see IAMDDB here though, 'Shade' is a tune.

Posted by: DouglasLisboa 29th November 2017, 11:16 AM

Nilüfer Yanya is one of the best surprises for me, I’m love with her songs!

Posted by: Davidson 3rd December 2017, 12:08 PM

IAMBBD better get a place, she really brings something so new to UK female rap wub.gif

Posted by: SantaDalek32 12th December 2017, 11:55 PM

Favourites:

Superorganism
Tom Walker
Pale Waves
Rex Orange County
Khalid
Sam Fender
Billie Eilish

Posted by: Herbs 13th December 2017, 07:29 AM

Lewis Capaldi ftw!

Posted by: SevenSeize 8th January 2018, 11:18 AM

Pale Waves fifth on the list

Posted by: jafetsigfinns 8th January 2018, 11:43 AM

Omg!

Alma
Billie Eilish
Khalid
Sigrid

Top 4 pls *.*

Posted by: Danuary 8th January 2018, 11:58 AM

For the top 4 I'm predicting

1. Not3s
2. Tom Walker
3. Khalid
4. Sigrid

though any of Alma, Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi and Yxng Bane could take their spots.

Posted by: cqmerqnita 8th January 2018, 05:35 PM

I’m sure Sigrid will win

Posted by: SLlewellyn 8th January 2018, 05:51 PM

Very surprised to see them place Pale Waves in the top 5 actually, though I do really like them.

Torn about who I think they’ll give the remaining spots to, but for now I’ll predict Not3s, Sigrid, Tom Walker, and Alma. The fact that Superorganism were a Hottest Record for Annie last Tuesday makes me think that they’ve just missed the cut sadly.

Posted by: SevenSeize 9th January 2018, 11:19 AM

4th - Khalid~

Posted by: Midge 9th January 2018, 11:33 AM

I like both songs posted by both of those artists. Good choices.

Posted by: Avicii 9th January 2018, 12:40 PM

Is that just a personal pick Seven or are they actually trying to push Location as the next Khalid single here? I hope not, dull song.

The former kink.gif

Posted by: mack25 9th January 2018, 12:54 PM

It was obvious Khalid was gonna be in the top 5!!

Not3s, Tom Walker and Sigrid will most likely be the top 3... Alma will miss out i think!!

My guess is:
3.Not3s
2.Sigrid
1.Tom Walker

Posted by: Herbs 9th January 2018, 02:05 PM

Id love Lewis Capaldi to be top 3, but doubt it now

Posted by: Bjork 9th January 2018, 03:09 PM

tom walker for #1

Posted by: Avicii 9th January 2018, 03:11 PM

it's probably more likely for Tom Walker but I'm still holding out hope for Not3s, would be great to have someone from the growing British urban scene get the honour.

Posted by: SevenSeize 10th January 2018, 10:36 AM

IAMDDB is third

Posted by: Midge 10th January 2018, 10:40 AM

That one didn't do much for me.

Posted by: HarryEzra 10th January 2018, 12:24 PM

I do like when its not predictiable *.*

Posted by: cqmerqnita 10th January 2018, 12:28 PM

Top 2 is surely Tom Walker and Sigrid

Posted by: SevenSeize 11th January 2018, 10:30 AM

2nd place goes to....Rex Orange County ohmy.gif

wub.gif

Posted by: HarryEzra 11th January 2018, 10:45 AM

Really supried by two and three ohmy.gif but glad at #2

Posted by: Midge 11th January 2018, 10:50 AM

I'd imagine it's Tom Walker, Jorja Smith or Not3s at number 1.

Who were the three nominated for the BRIT breakthrough award again?

Jorja Smith isn't in it (believe she was last year). She won BRIT breakthrough (Mabel and Stefflon Don also nominated)

Now that is surprising for #2. I guess Tom Walker has #1 now as there's no way he won't be top five. Quite sad that Not3s isn't top five then.

Sigrid is good but not worthy of #1... has to be Tom Walker surely surely, but could Not3s potentially snatch it!!

Posted by: Bjork 11th January 2018, 12:41 PM

thats a surprise

Posted by: DalekTurret32 11th January 2018, 12:47 PM

5. Pale Waves
4. Khalid
3. IAMDDB
2. Rex Orange County

contenders for number one:

Alma
Billie Eilish
Jade Bird
Lewis Capaldi
Nilufer Yanya
Not3s
Sam Fender
Sigrid
Superorganism
Tom Walker
Yaeji
Yxng Bane

I'm guessing ALMA, Superorganism, Sigrid, Not3s or Tom Walker

Posted by: Midge 11th January 2018, 12:50 PM

Oh, first time they've gone for a BRIT breakthrough set of artists who aren't part of this then!

Just listening to that Rex Orange County track for the first time and really like it! I do love these Sound Of polls.

Posted by: Steve201 11th January 2018, 01:51 PM

Their most recent release 'Loving is Easy' was a fantastic chill out song for me on the run up to Xmas! If it's Alma/Sigrid/Not3s as no1 it would be ridiculous as they have had support since the beginning of 2017 and had some top 40 hits to their name.

Posted by: SLlewellyn 11th January 2018, 01:57 PM

I did not call IAMDDB nor Rex Orange County being in the top 3 when there’s the likes of Alma, Sigrid, Not3s, and Tom Walker still to feature in the top 5! So hard to call a winner now. If the amount they are hammering Sigrid, Not3s and Tom Walker’s new singles are anything to go by though, perhaps Alma or someone else will be crowned winner. Convinced it won’t be Superorganism in any case, sadly, as they are Annie Mac’s tune of the week already.

The Sound of poll really is one of the most exciting reveals in music (to me anyway!)

Posted by: cqmerqnita 11th January 2018, 05:22 PM

It better be Sigrid

Posted by: Cremey 11th January 2018, 05:45 PM

I’d love it to be Billie Eilish or Yxng Bane, I doubt it will be though

Posted by: Bré 11th January 2018, 05:48 PM

Khalid is the only predictable choice in this top 5 so far, I would have thought the #1 would be Tom Walker but I'm not so sure now. Could certainly be Not3s or Sigrid as well.

Posted by: jjake 11th January 2018, 05:59 PM

i’d put money on sigrid

Posted by: mdh 11th January 2018, 05:59 PM

i mean Tom Walker is FAR superior to everyone else on the list soooo xo

Posted by: Bjork 11th January 2018, 06:06 PM

agree it should be tom walker
but actually not sure what their criterion is, the one with a more promising future??

last year rag n bone man was nominated but didn't win so not sure whats their criterion

Posted by: Steve201 11th January 2018, 10:02 PM

Yeh I mean Khalid has had a top 20 hit so it mustn't matter about chart position.

Is the top 5 all gauranteed A List placings throughout the year of just the no1?

Posted by: SevenSeize 12th January 2018, 10:23 AM

Buzzjack rejoice, Sigrid is the Sound of 2018 winner <3

Posted by: Midge 12th January 2018, 10:50 AM

She reminds me of Susanne Sundfør but with a poppier edge.

Ooh, WD Sigrid x I haven't really paid much attention to her hype but I do really like the one song I have heard from her ('Plot Twist'). Idk if this will be the boost she needs to finally actually get a hit but it can't hurt her.

Posted by: ML Hammer95 12th January 2018, 03:50 PM

Should have gone to Not3s or Yxng Bane, although they'll do well regardless of Radio 1 recognition I guess.
