09th. Beautiful Stranger = 5 votes



Welcome to Round 8 of Madonna's 'GHV2' survivor poll and after a very close round with 3 songs facing elimination, due to being tied with the most votes, but it was 'Beautiful Stranger' that finally edged out in front with 5 votes and therefore becoming the 7th song to leave this competition, leaving 8 left in running (YES 'Frozen' is back in after taking a break last week). Both 'Secret' & surprisingly 'Drowned World' were the other songs that were in the tie position, with 4 votes each, and finally 'Deeper and Deeper' was the only other song to receive votes with 2. The rest were safe for the time being.

'Beautiful Stranger' was released in May 1999 as a single from the soundtrack to the film 'Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me', and was co-written by Madonna herself and William Orbit who were both hot property after the massive commercial and critical success of 'ROL', and this was their first project since and so this was a very highly anticipated release and did not disappoint and received positive feedback from music critics who praised the production and Madonna's progress with her music, following her critically acclaimed album Ray of Light . It was a commercial success reaching the top of the charts in Canada, Finland, Iceland and Italy, number two in the United Kingdom and top-ten in many markets. Although the song was not commercially released in the United States, it reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 due to airplay. It reached number one on the US dance charts. "Beautiful Stranger" also earned Madonna her fifth Grammy Award, winning the trophy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Like any good throwaway track this doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is, with a cool blast of psychedelic pop, along with some catchy hooks and on the whole just a nice little fun number that takes quite a refreshing pace after her last album, while at the same time not all that different to what was on 'ROL'. Both Madonna and William Orbit created the perfect theme song for the movie with its playful and fun vibe and at this point in her career Madonna could do no wrong and showed that she was well and truly here to stay.
