She's working on new album, her manager recently said it'll probably be released late 2016 (not really sure about that)

But anyways.. angel.gif

What sound do you expect from this album? Something similar to Prism or something totally different.
Which features would you like on this album?

Posted by: Joe. 9th January 2016, 06:59 PM

I can't wait for this. She always brings a good handful of very superior pop songs with album, so more of that please.

Posted by: SeanGrey 10th January 2016, 06:47 PM

Definitely wanting this to be more in line with Prism than previous albums.

Posted by: Virginia's Walls 10th January 2016, 07:10 PM

Lol just thought who is that chavvy-lookin Hollyoaks girl in your sig then realised!

She won't mat h Teenage Dream at all.

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 10th January 2016, 08:34 PM

She's an artist who normally takes advantage of press opportunities so I was a little surprised she didn't have a new 'Prism' single lined up for her Superbowl performance...

I expected this album out last year TBH so it's no surprise to me to think it'll be coming out this year. First single around summer, I expect?

Posted by: Snowbot 10th January 2016, 08:46 PM

I have no idea what to expect but I feel like her star has faded a bit of late and I have a feeling this will seemingly "underperform" with no #1s to speak of.

Still, I'm excited for whatever she has to offer of course!

Posted by: Jack 11th January 2016, 09:49 AM

I think she is actually one of the few popstars who will do well with OA/OS and streaming. I think she will surprise people.

As long as she comes back with something as accessible as 'Roar' or 'Firework', she will be onto a winner.

Posted by: Qween 11th January 2016, 10:02 AM

First single, so long as it's another undeniable pop behemoth like Roar or Firework will do fine, the album will open well out of the gates but I agree with Robot in that this is likely to ''underperform'' (at least against the massive success of Teenage Dream anyway, Prism didn't exactly do brilliantly).

In terms of music, I'm hoping for more of a Teenage Dream vibe too, Prism has some brilliant songs but as a whole is lazy and a bit dull whereas the shorter run time and slight bit more variety makes for a much better listen.

Posted by: mr_pmt 11th January 2016, 12:01 PM

I consider Prism a success, how much did it do? About half of Teenage Dream? (she was never gonna match that though).

I do think this era could be the decider of her relevancy, but we'll need to wait and see.

Posted by: Joe. 11th January 2016, 12:03 PM

I think as long as she brings the goods, with the quality of the music, I've no doubt she'll do well. I really don't see her underperforming!

Posted by: Juliano 11th January 2016, 09:00 PM

I pray they don't F up the single choices again. Teenage Dream was the perfect era for that. OOTB was decent too, but Prism was a mess.

Posted by: Virginia's Walls 11th January 2016, 09:11 PM

Legendary Lovers ignored but How We Do released with a 90s vid? :cheesebloc:

I think it was closer to a quarter in the UK at least which was a bit disappointing. I hope her star isn't fading though because she's one of the few artists to bring fun pop each and every time.

Posted by: Joe. 11th January 2016, 11:12 PM

Album sales did really start to plummet heavily between Teenage Dream and Prism, too. Not to mention The former got a re-release with two pretty big hits.
Prism had sold 400k in June, so is probably on around 410k now.

Posted by: Ryan. 11th January 2016, 11:20 PM

She should be able to manage another Prism-esque era I should think, a couple of big hit singles and a couple of minor ones and a decent if not incredible selling album by major popstar standards.

Posted by: slowdown73 9th February 2016, 01:23 AM

I liked Prism but her previous album was overall better and pop perfection but prism was a more mature sound so maybe a combination of both!

Posted by: 🌚🌚🌚 9th February 2016, 11:29 AM

as long as she does a radar and puts walking on air on this one too

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 10th February 2016, 02:41 PM

Walking on Gays should have been a single.

Posted by: Virginia's Walls 10th February 2016, 03:09 PM

No it was awful. Just like tuneless Radar, which shows overhyped fan towh,Venus for example, are crap and not good singles.

It is GaGa vs Katy again this year!! Who will win?? ohmy.gif

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE 13th February 2016, 05:18 PM

Tuneless Radar indeed...

Adele will win.

Posted by: Juliano 15th February 2016, 02:59 PM

I need a lead single for this ASAP.

Posted by: Euphorique 21st February 2016, 05:24 AM

as IF Radar had any shot at being a hit single when it was released, please. Had it been released when BTI was, I guarantee you it would've done much better than that.

Posted by: Virginia's Walls 23rd February 2016, 09:08 AM

No it was awful. Monotonous autotune and boring. Only popular on fan forums but v. Basic.9

Posted by: Umi 24th February 2016, 12:04 AM

'Radar' was a huge hit in the making back in 2008. Overrated song and all (I find it quite hard to listen to now) but it was popular at the time and would have done a lot more than 'Break The Ice'. It's a huge pity it wasn't released back then.

EDIT: Really didn't notice I was in the Katy forum I'll be honest.

No, it wasn't. The reaction when it came out was great, and it charted on hype alone. Would've been a great single in 2008, not after loads of singles and 2 albums...

Posted by: Acidburn 24th February 2016, 08:16 PM

I'm hoping she'll bring out a new album this year. I don't feel that her star has faded at all, she's just on the down low and as for album sales, Katy has always been more of a singles artist, than a album artist.

I still think "Prism" could have sold better, if the right singles were released. Things started going wrong with poor decisions such as "Birthday" and "This Is How We Do", being released over the amazing "Walking On Air", which would have definitely been a hit and much more successful than the other 2. I can understand "Birthday" being a single, as it was one of the standouts on Prism and got good critical reviews, but the latter, I mean come on, "TIHWD" is standard at best, and should NOT have been considered at all. "Legendary Lovers" was even a much better choice.

As for the new material, I actually can't wait and very excited, I wonder if that "She's So Creepy" song will turn out to be real. I'm hoping not, as I like the idea, just something more subtle with a more clever title.

Fan hype for a Robo Brit monotone dirge. Everyone NOT a fan complained about how bad and tuneless it was. Those albums weren't big hits sooo where was everyone who shoulda got it eh? Fan based hype.

Posted by: casey__ 19th April 2016, 10:46 PM

So much hate for 'This Is How We Do' sad.gif One of the better songs from a pretty unimpressive album in my opinion.

No. Fan base hype is what we saw happen with 'Pretty Girls'. Which is dreadful in comparison to the masterpiece that is 'Work Bitch'.

Posted by: slowdown73 27th April 2016, 12:26 AM

I agree this is how we do was a poor single choice from prism when walking on air was completely overlooked. I liked birthday though.

TBF their both about the same for me...

'Radar' is a great song. She ruined it herself and it still did well I'd say. Released 2 years too late (or 3 years if were to believe it was recorded in 06), with a video which was essentially a horse show commercial and it still managed to peak at #45 in the UK and get playlisted!

Posted by: Robot 28th May 2016, 11:09 AM

Katy has said that she's touring in 2017 so that makes me feel like the album is all the more likely to come at the end of this year!

Posted by: Serg Mix 22nd December 2016, 09:29 AM

Or Q2 of 2017 at this point.

I just really need her to release something soon.

Posted by: HausofBallBalls 22nd December 2016, 12:52 PM

Shes been posting videos of herself in the studio with a few seconds of clips playing in the background. The latest one I saw was where she'd coloured her front tooth in with sharpie with a track in the background laugh.gif

Posted by: seltinpixmile 7th February 2017, 01:49 AM

She's performing on the Grammys and probably the release of the new single will come this week as she has posted a video on instagram stories saying that it's a big week.

Posted by: HausofSZA 15th May 2017, 04:16 PM

Excited about tour, i'm 100% going to it as I haven't seen her live yet.

Posted by: ~josh~ 15th May 2017, 04:23 PM

This is floating about too which could potentially be on the album cover. I'm kinda conflicted on the new hair, ngl she looks like a bad drag queen at times :/

Posted by: Cremey 15th May 2017, 04:26 PM

I think that's just for the tour rather than the album artwork, but if it is it'll be her best artwork by a mile!

Free my mind, artflop, Witness makes Katy's chart runs stop.

Posted by: cqmerqn 15th May 2017, 08:33 PM

I feel like this album is going to flop hard. I had high hopes after CTTR but I'm not liking the way this era is going.

Posted by: Joe. 15th May 2017, 09:29 PM

Can't see if flopping hard. It'll easily be her lowest seller though, but that's just as much a sign of the times in terms of album sales radidly decreasing as it is, a sign of an artist no longer in their prime like they were 4 years ago.

Realisticly I think it'll have similar success to Joanne.

Posted by: cqmerqn 15th May 2017, 10:44 PM

I think it'll do better than Joanne but no where near as good as her previous albums.

Posted by: Riser 16th May 2017, 03:17 AM

She's really got her work cut out for her to get respectable first-week sales as well as long-term sales. Bon Appetit certainly doesn't seem like an album seller but it does seem like she has enough promo slots lined up to make up for it. Overall I'm just relieved to see a release date and that this will see the light of day, and not much of a wait for it either!

Only 10 days until we finally get this w00t.gif

Do we think it could be another #1 for her? Personally, hype just seems so low right now, I'd be surprised if she opened any higher than 25k tbh. I can see London Grammar taking the #1 spot actually but hype seems lower for them this time around too.

Posted by: Yeasty Clutch 30th May 2017, 07:00 PM

It will enter at anywhere between #10 - #14.

It will be no bigger than In The Zone or VB's first week, though obviously without the ITZ longevity or impakt or status as a modern pop classic.

I think she'll take the #1 if she comes over and does some promo, if not, London Grammar will take it. It's a shame the R1 big weekend set wasn't properly televised, because it was extremely well received by critics and pop fans (including lots who're usually vet harsh on KP). It was her best performance in a long time and she actually sounded great.

From a listening party yesterday the track listing is:

1. Witness
2. Hey Hey Hey
3. ——————
4. Swish Swish ft. Nicki Minaj
5. Deja Vu
6. Power
7. Mind’s A Maze
8. Miss You More
9. Chained To The Rhythm ft. Skip Marley
10. Tsunami
11. Bon Appetit ft. Migos
12. Bigger Than Me
13. Save As Draft
14. Pendulum
15. Into Me You See

Posted by: Willy's Tears 6th June 2017, 04:49 PM

Honestly, she should do a Rihanna Anti and just keep testing out singles till she gets the right song and can release the album free on that and avoid a flop.

I don't even have any idea what to expect based on all 3 songs sounding so vastly different. I'll listen later but tell me, is there even ONE real true big banger with a stomping chorus? I need at least one of those.

Posted by: Joe. 6th June 2017, 10:07 PM

It hasn't actually leaked yet sadly, only some snippets.

Posted by: slowdown73 7th June 2017, 10:08 PM

Dance with the devil and act your age are rumoured to be the two bonus tracks included on the deluxe edition.

Posted by: Liаm 7th June 2017, 10:14 PM

The snippets sound a bit samey :/ Looking forward to hearing Roulette and Deja vu though.

Posted by: Joe. 8th June 2017, 12:17 PM

I didn't love the album on a first listen. The three singles we've had remain the highlights by far. I assume and hope it'll grow.

Posted by: Ryan. 8th June 2017, 03:33 PM

Oh dear at this album, what a disappointment. Katy used to be to go to popstar for those big belt-out choruses and unashamed pop but I can't remember a single chorus after first listen. Nearly all the tracks sound the same in that they've all had the iamspamspamamisink thrown into them production-wise. Teenage Dream is one of my favourite albums of all-time and I'm not even sure I'm going to add this one to my library sad.gif

Roulette stood out as an obvious single, nothing else did. I love Chained To The Rhythm and Bon Appetit is decent. Swish Swish is ok, and it says something when Swish Swish is comfortably in the top 4 best tracks of the album.

This is such a slog of an album.

Keep it.

Gross album. Can't see it even selling 20K now!

Really? unsure.gif

I'm almost finished my first listen, I think it needs a couple of repeat listens so the songs stick out in my mind but it's EASILY her most cohesive album to date! Bon Appétit sounds out of place laugh.gif not as good as the last two albums yet but I think a lot of growing will happen with further plays.

Posted by: Joe. 8th June 2017, 05:56 PM

It's better than her first album for sure. But Teenage Dream and half of Prism are just wall to wall with potential huge hits, so it's hard to live up to that. It's a change in direction for sure, it kinda reminds me Anti, which felt very samey for me at first and nothing stuck out, but it grew on me.

The Jack Garratt track (Power) is actually my favourite of the album tracks so far.

The only 10/10 songs at this point are the three singles but these are the keepers;

Roulette
Tsunami
Pendulum
Power

Hey Hey Hey is not good.

Posted by: Neil 8th June 2017, 08:57 PM

Listened to the album twice now, I really like it. As an album, I'd say it's a very cohesive piece of work.

However, the best songs in terms of what could be a hit... have already been released. So I do worry for the longevity of this era.

Posted by: Joe. 8th June 2017, 09:32 PM

I think the best chance of a hit is if they push Swish Swish properly with a video etc.

Posted by: Jonjo 8th June 2017, 10:16 PM

'Swish Swish' is having decent longevity considering it's only a promo single atm! So with proper expoaure it'll be a hit, surely? Although, isn't 'Bon Appétit' also doing decently after a poo start?

Posted by: liamk97 8th June 2017, 10:23 PM

I'll be listening in the morning but I'm curious as to what the overall sound is like. Any more 'woke' songs? Is it generally slightly weird like 'Bon Appetit' and 'Swish Swish' are? Is even the Max Martin song ('Witness') not a full out pop banger?

QUOTE(Joe. @ Jun 8 2017, 06:56 PM) *
Hey Hey Hey is one of her worst songs ever.

Musically or lyrically? Or both? It seems like Sia is losing her touch this past year.

Posted by: Willy's Tears 8th June 2017, 10:31 PM

What is the Title song like?

I are definitely revising it down to #38 now

Posted by: 360Jupiter 8th June 2017, 11:39 PM

Witness the title track isn't bad on first listen. Does sound a bit like it isn't sure what sound it's going for though. It starts one way and then shifts into another, but it doesn't seem like a deliberate switch.

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 9th June 2017, 12:17 AM

I was going to get tickets for the tour tomorrow. I've listened to the album all the way through and it's that BAD I've changed by mind.

Swish Swish is HUGE tune but the rest of the album is utter TRASH.

I've never been so disappointed in anything, it's terrible.

Posted by: Willy's Tears 9th June 2017, 12:18 AM

I told you all it would be after Bon Appetit and Swish bloody Swish and with CTTR as the bloody title track!!

Shoulda gone back and redid it like Anti.

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 9th June 2017, 12:24 AM

When Roulette goes into Swish Swish is doesn't fit AT ALL...it sounds like a completely different album.

I'm honestly so devastated I was so looking forward to seeing her live for the first time but there's no way I can stand the rest of the album just for Swishh.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 9th June 2017, 12:27 AM

I'm really surprised anyone can be QUITE so hateful for this album! That said, give it time, I think it's gonna be a grower for most of us.

Swish Swish is puke.gif anyway

Expect a 38#.

Posted by: liamk97 9th June 2017, 03:48 AM

Keep it.

Posted by: Joe. 9th June 2017, 08:54 AM

Roulette is so good!

Posted by: ~josh~ 9th June 2017, 08:56 AM

One listen so I'm sure things will grow anyway but yeah, it's alright I guess. I think the terrible reviews are a bit hyperbolic but it's definitely her worst album yet for me. Nothing is really bad on it and it's all rather nice but nothing is jumping out at me and it's a little on the boring side to be honest. The only track I remember and really enjoyed was Pendulum, the choir really worked but 1 instant track out of 12 new ones isn't a great tally...

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 9th June 2017, 09:25 AM

yeah I've tried a couple of times, I think it's awful.

To me Katy Perry is an artist that produces fun catchy pop bops, this album has none and her voice isn't good enough to pull off some of these tracks in my opinion.

Just listened through and have ooone question:

WHERE IS THE CHORUS?!

Sat here waiting for the chorus like lame.gif mario.gif coffee.gif

Whole thing sounds like those beige indie pop filler songs we sometimes get in BJSC.

Hey Hey Hey, Witness and another one I forget the title of have the most chance as a single. The rest is just !!!!

Hey Hey Hey isn't even the worst for me, it sounds childish and annoying but at least I can remember how it goes and it stands out a bit. So many of these blend into one for me.

Posted by: HausofSZA 9th June 2017, 05:25 PM

Hey Hey Hey is sounding good to me? Sure it's a bit "done before" but the lyrics arre very fitting to her and this era right now: people trying to crack her, but she won't break.

The title track and Roulette are both wonderful too. The way the latter builds into that final chorus and she SCREAMS just before it is magical.

The production on the album is so strong and there are a lot of nice tracks. Sure there aren't as many WOW moments as her other albums but it doesn't make this a disaster - just a departure from her other other material. I am here for it for now, but as a complete work, it probably won't last as long in my affections as the other albums.

Posted by: SeanGrey 9th June 2017, 05:33 PM

Posted by: Cameron 9th June 2017, 06:03 PM

Okay, so most of these tracks sound like the random poorly produced Spotify 'hits'... That being said, Roulette just needs a little bit more oomph in the chorus and it is a SMASH. Hey Hey Hey reminds me a bit of What The Hell by Avril Lavigne, idk why

Me and Sam have decided this is what we expect Vanessa White's debut album to sound like

Posted by: Davidson 9th June 2017, 06:06 PM

06.0 Witness (has potential to be great but it is lacking the punch the production needs)
05.0 Hey Hey Hey (don't hate it as much as the rest of you but it is nothing special. if this is single potential then i'm worried)
07.0 Roulette
11.0 Swish Swish
08.5 Deja Vu (this sounds like it could be a single? by far the strongest new track so far)
06.5 Power (I want to love this as it reminds me of 'Circle The Drain' but the production is a mess)
03.0 Mind Maze
05.0 I Miss You More
09.0 Chained To The Rhythm
05.0 Tsunami
10.0 Bon Appetit (in my top 5 Katy songs ever along with Swish Swish, don't care what anyone says)
07.5 Bigger Than Me
05.0 Save As Draft
06.0 Pendulum
04.0 Into Me You See

Need to listen to the bonus tracks but it is definitely a massive disappointment. The singles were amazing and yet the actual album tracks are so meh.

Roulette, title track o Hey Hey Hey probably her best bets.

First listen rate:

Album: 4.5/10

03 Witness the production really irritated me & it dragged
00 Hey Hey Hey f*** me
08.5 Roulette this is pretty good, reminds me of something that could easily fit on Prism
00 Swish Swish no.
03 Deja Vu same as Witness pretty much
05.5 Power this is actually quite interesting but a bit jarring, could click with more listens
01 Mind Maze this is the kind of song that I would listen to 10 seconds of on spotify and then skip cos it sounds so bad. the last 45 seconds save it from a 0
09 Miss You More this is SO GOOD. AT LAST. reminds me of a bit more produced BTGOG.
11 Chained To The Rhythm Still perfect. In my top 3 Katy songs and this just slays so much, love how clever the lyrics are (and it stands out even more on this album!) and the production is fab *.*
04 Tsunami a song that sounds like it would be amongst the weakest on PRISM but it could be worse
00 Bon Appetit irritating af
07.5 Bigger Than Me this was quite good but I've kinda forgot what it sounded like already sad.gif
03 Save As Draft the song itself is nice but the lyrics/vocals are so bad that they bring the song right down
07.5 Pendulum this was quite good, definitely got stronger as it went on, reminds me of a minimalistc CTTR
07 Into Me You See this is nice

so so disappointing. sad.gif I hate the production on most of the songs & I legit never want to hear half these tracks again sad.gif
CTTR still slays & MYM/Roulette are great and the album does pick up a lil bit towards the end but I feel like it should be so much stronger than it is

Posted by: Cremey 9th June 2017, 07:09 PM

It's not a good album but it's not absolutely horrendous. I think I'll probably prefer it to 'Prism' in the end, that only had about 3 good songs :')

The singles are probably my top three but I'm liking these too:
01 Roulette
02 Hey Hey Hey (I f***ing love it, ok. Definitely get the Avril Lavigne comparisons haha)
03 Pendulum
04 Bigger Than Me
05 Mind Maze

The rest I probably won't go back to. Especially Into Me You See 😷

09 Miss You More
11 Chained To The Rhythm
06.5 Tsunami
09 Bon Appetit
07 Bigger Than Me
08 Save As Draft

I've listened to 75% of the album now and not particularly impressed. The first half is particularly weak. Many of the songs are quite bland and don't stand out. Highlights are chained to the rhythm, bon appetite, miss you more, bigger than me and pendulum. It might grow on me more but I don't have high hopes for this album. I think its a major step back compared to prism and teenage dream - the later was packed with hits but she will be lucky to get another major hit from this album.

Giving it another go and listening to it on shuffle, it works better that way so far.

Posted by: Jonjo 9th June 2017, 11:14 PM

Finally got around to taking time out to listen to this!

First listen ratings are:

08.0 Witness
07.0 Hey Hey Hey
07.5 Roulette
09.0 Swish Swish
06.0 Deja Vu
06.0 Power
06.5 Mind Maze
07.0 Miss You More > This reminds me of 'Unconditionally', except less powerful/impactful. Still good though! <
10.0 Chained To The Rhythm
06.0 Tsunami
11.0 Bon Appetit
09.0 Bigger Than Me > This is wonderful. MORE LOVE PLEASE! <
09.0 Save As Draft > HOLY HELL. THIS IS STUNNING. OMG. <
07.5 Pendulum
08.5 Into Me You See > The title is 'If U Seek Amy' teas. Lol. Lovely album closer! <

That run from 'Bon Appetit' to the end though... *.* 'Pendulum' is also very good, I just think the production could be slightly stronger (i.e. the chorus could be more distinct), but YAS at gospel vibes <3

Overall, really not as bad people say it is. A lot of the tracks sound fillery, sure, but they're not abysmal or anywhere near to being so. I feel like a few of them would sound better on their own, away from the album.

No one talking about the Big Brother style live stream she has going on for the next few days then?? ohmy.gif

Posted by: RobBob 10th June 2017, 01:28 AM

First impressions: Am I a little disappointed? Yes I am, I'd be lying to say otherwise, it's all very album track and little else. But, contrary to what other people have said here, I think the production is the saviour for a lot of these tracks. It's all a lot more intricate and abrasive than I'm used to with her, production wise, but it's a shame a lot of the songs as a whole didn't live up to that whole feeling. Roulette is a definite stand out, with Tsunami, Miss You More and Hey Hey Hey also standing out to me. It's a cohesive album for sure though and I feel like a lot of thought has gone into this even if it hasn't necessarily paid off as a risk for her and it's definitely got moments I'd want to go back for, a grower quite possibly.

Posted by: Kye 10th June 2017, 02:41 AM

I went in optimistically after reading some pretty dismal reviews about this on various sites and I have to say that I feel the general consensus is right.

It was always going to be a risk when your brand is 'big bright pop choruses' but this really jumped the shark. There's probably 4 good choruses/hooks across the whole thing.
Really quite shocked to see how heavily involved Max Martin was because he usually gets it so, so right but, to his merit, the production is the best thing about the album.

I know that lyrics have never been one of Katy's strong points but she's really missed the mark lyrically on practically every track. The verses are either very wordy and jarring or slender and drawn out.

Cohesiveness isn't always a good thing if you haven't got the material to back up the idea. Personally, I'd rather it be incohesive and have some stormers.
I'm sure it'll grow though, I do like a fair few songs they're just not what I wanted/expected.

Posted by: Atonement 10th June 2017, 09:20 AM

I haven't listened to the whole album yet but I kind of liked what I heard so far (track 1-6, 8, 9, 11, 14 and 15). I think it's a little too samey for now but that's probably 'cause it needs room to grow.

It's s a bold risk that, by the public response, is not paying off but for me personally it's definitely more interesting than her other albums.

Posted by: gooddelta 10th June 2017, 11:08 AM

I really rather like the album, it's a tiny bit bloated in places - I think I'd have personally left off Power, Mind Maze and Bigger Than Me, which feel like filler, to make for a stronger 12-track package.

But there are lots of great moments elsewhere - Chained To The Rhythm is still one of my favourite songs of the year, Bon Appetit is way better than a lot of people give it credit for and Swish Swish is quickly growing on me.

Outside the singles, Witness is a strong opener, Hey Hey Hey is memorable and I don't get the mass hate, Roulette is absolutely brilliant and pedals that same Europop throwback sound as the Alan Walker remix of Sia's Move Your Body that I love, Miss You More, Save As Draft and particularly Intimacy are enjoyable slower moments, Deja Vu and Tsunami seem quite strong and Pendulum is really melodic and uplifting, a great pop/gospel sort of atmosphere that I wasn't expecting to hear on this album.

I really don't think it's very much worse than Prism personally - maybe the highs were higher on that album but I'm pretty happy with this album overall!

No sample apparently - have bought the CD and am just reading the credits. It does sound familiar, but must just be heavily inspired by something.

I really rather like the album, it's a tiny bit bloated in places - I think I'd have personally left off Power, Mind Maze and Bigger Than Me, which feel like filler, to make for a stronger 12-track package.

The songs on Prism had tunes and choruses. Prism is a world apart from this dirge.

Posted by: Cremey 10th June 2017, 12:11 PM

Having a chorus doesn't make a song good though, plenty of good songs don't have an obvious hook.

I agree, although I don't even agree that these songs don't have big choruses.

Most of the songs are super addictive. 'Bigger Than Me' is LUSH wub.gif.

I just find the rollout so bizarre. There is no hype? Where is the promo? It feels like there is no single right now, even with the Bon Appetit video being so recent.

It's not Britney Jean, nothing will be that bad for such a massive popstar but this is really tired and disappointing.

'Hey Hey Hey' is a banger. It's really wormed it's way into my affections. I never thought it was "awful" or "worst song on the album" as others seemed to, but it's SO GOOD.

I also get 'I Like It Rough' vibes during the chorus of 'Roulette'! laugh.gif

I told one of my friends about it but he listened a bit and hated it biggrin.gif.

Songs that I'm not really feeling:

- Miss You More
- Save as Draft
- Pendulum
- Into Me You See

and I'm still on the fence about 'Tsunami'.

The ballads were to be expected. I'm not a ballad kind of person and especially Katy's ballads in general are not my thing.

I think she was giving away free albums with tour tickets in the US which counts towards its first week tally.

To answer your question (US):
Prism - 286,000
Teenage Dream - 192,000
One of the Boys - 47,000

Note that obviously these didn't include streaming sales either ^

Posted by: *Tim 10th June 2017, 10:33 PM

Yeah. It was here in the UK too, my friend at work said she ordered the album to get a pre-sale code.

Posted by: Joe. 11th June 2017, 08:55 AM

It was different in the US to the UK. There was a copy of the album automatically added to your basket when you got tickets but you could 'opt out' of buying it. If every single ticket gave one away for free and it counted she'd be on 400k+

So happy to see she is projected for over 200k! I hope it keeps up throughout the week. I was seriously worried about this release.

My early favorites are Witness, Hey Hey Hey, Roulette, and Bigger Than Me. In addition to the three singles of course.

There is something about 'Mind Maze' that I love. It was the only one I wasn't keen on at first, but it's really hit me atm!

Posted by: blacksquare 11th June 2017, 08:16 PM

The more I listen to this the more I can't believe Witness wasn't the second single. It sounds like an album seller, especially with a great video.

Posted by: 360Jupiter 11th June 2017, 09:11 PM

Agree, Witness would've been a great second single. I wonder if Migos or their management had any influence on Bon Appetit being released...

Posted by: cqmerqn 11th June 2017, 09:54 PM

225K is a great result

Posted by: Jonjo 11th June 2017, 09:57 PM

I imagine with Migos/Quavo getting all these hits lately probably played some part in it being a single.

Tbh I feel like the campaign should've gone:

CTT
(Instant Grat 1: Pendulum)
(Instant Grat 2/eventual 2nd single) Witness
--Album Release--
Bon Appétit
Roulette
Hey Hey Hey/Swish Swish

I feel like BA might have caught on a lot more had people heard it through the albums release as opposed to being on it's own. I think it could've had a 'Dark Horse' type rise to the top 10 and a more natural progression.

Posted by: Cucumberella 11th June 2017, 10:05 PM

01 Chained To The Rhythm
02 Swish Swish
(Instant Grat 1: Witness)
(Instant Grat 2: Pendulum)
----
03 Roulette
04 Bon Appetit (feat. Migos)

Would've worked better in my opinion, I really can't argue against the lead single at all but I do think Bon Appetit was a misfire of a second single.

Posted by: blacksquare 11th June 2017, 11:29 PM

Chained to the Rhythm
Witness
Swish Swish

I feel like Swish Swish towards the end of summer would have worked better. It doesn't really feel like a lead single album seller, especially after Bon Appetit. It seems more like the song that could breathe some life into a campaign, like Side to Side did.

Posted by: all is vanity. 11th June 2017, 11:38 PM

I'm really feeling Tsunami right now. I don't think the album is as bad as what a lot of people are saying, I like it.

Posted by: SKOB 12th June 2017, 06:23 AM

My problem is the lazy songwriting, half of the songs are just dreadful in that sense. For example the chorus of Tsunami sounds like a writer knows only 100 words and had already used 95 of them. You can have Purity Ring and Jack Garratt producing your songs but they can't help if the lyrics don't make sense or fit into the songs

She's coming out as a real person with the therapy sessions etc which is cool but also seem a bit calculated (as this is the album release week and opening up about your past NOW seems a bit... oh well if it helps her then it's obviously good) but it makes me feel uncomfortable as I wouldn't invite anyone to my therapy sessions tbh

Posted by: liamk97 12th June 2017, 05:39 PM

I've listened in full and it's true that it's really not a bad album. A bit long maybe with not so many immediate standouts but I see no reason why it won't grow on me once I get more familiar. It might help that I've heard these two a few more times, but 'Hey Hey Hey' and 'Roulette' are my favourites out of the album tracks. 'Swish Swish' is my favourite song around right now, although Nicki's verse makes up most of my affection.

Posted by: Atonement 12th June 2017, 06:22 PM

Does 'Witness' really sound like single material to all of you? I don't hear it.

Posted by: Glyn 12th June 2017, 09:23 PM

Posted by: Kye 12th June 2017, 11:07 PM

I got it from her official store when you had to pre-order to get pre-sale tickets. It came to like £13.50/99 with postage.

Posted by: Cremey 14th June 2017, 10:26 PM

1. Why was 'Roulette' not the second single? Sounds like such an obvious smash. Hope it's next.
2. 'Miss You More' is her best ever ballad.
3. Can't get over the fact Hot Chip produced 'Into Me You See'. It's such a damp squib of a song, usually everything they touch is absolute GOLD.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 14th June 2017, 10:33 PM

Quite honestly I only like Swish Swish, CTTR and Roulette. sad.gif Some of these sound like unfinished demos. It's disappointing to see her fart this out after being away for quite a long time.

I would disagree with this. The main place the album excels is in its production. It has a very clean, defined sound. Where it lacks is in its melodies and choruses, which just aren't there for a lot of songs.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 15th June 2017, 08:24 AM

I have to agree, for me the production is a strong element of this album, very cohesive. It's intricate and even rather sublime!

I'm enjoying 'Witness'! I appreciate that she's stepped outside of her artistic comfort zone and taken some risks here. I never knew I'd want a track with a vibe like Tsunami from her. *.* I would say that in her experimentation that she's sacrificed some stronger hooks, certain tracks could have done with a boost, but overall there's enough here that I'm very happy with.

The three singles, Roulette, Power, Witness, Pendulum and Hey Hey Hey are all personal highlights (surprised the latter got a bad reception!), and Act My Age is a cute bop with a defiant sentiment.

Posted by: Willy's Tears 15th June 2017, 10:11 AM

PRODUCTION?!

The whole thing sounds like bad BJSC entries from start to finish!

Only Bon Appetite, Roulette and CTTR stand out from this beige, repetitive sound, and only CTTR is up there for the quality expected from an AAA pop star.

Worse than I had anticipated at the start of the week, that is really quite bad. Hoping that Swish Swish gets a video soon and ends up being a big hit for her soon. Just over 16k in the first week is really not good...

MusicWeek gave us total sales for her other albums too in the UK:
'Teenage Dream has sold 1,308,384 thus far, with One Of The Boys on 700,261 sales and Prism on 440,272.'

Posted by: HausofSZA 16th June 2017, 05:29 PM

That is such a horrendous and sudden decline in sales and popularity. Really quite unexplainable and unexpected. I always thought she was unstoppable in terms of public appeal. Gah. The album deserves so much more but I'm not sure what will help the album recover now. Swish Swish may become a hit, but an album seller it is not.

Posted by: Harlot 16th June 2017, 05:55 PM

It's not REALLY a surprise though. Prism was off the back of a MONSTER HIT in the form of 'Roar' and it struggled after the intitial buzz. She's never really been a massive album seller in the UK though and it's always been on the strength of the singles and it's ABUNDANTLY CLEAR (bar CTTR) there's about as much strength there as an arthritic granny.

Posted by: Joe. 16th June 2017, 06:02 PM

Really, really terrible. Her team have always been so brilliant but they really dropped the ball with this one. As much as I adore it, Bon Appetit clearly wasn't a good choice to lead the album. Firstly, I think Rise should never have happened and killed a load of her momentum being one of her weakest singles after such a huge gap since her last release. I think she should have come back with Swish Swish which is such a statement and has quite an immediate song that would get people talking. Then I think she should have had the album lead single as the flawless Chained to the Rhythm which is such a big song and sounds like an album seller. I also think, give she is (well...was) so popular in the UK and we're one of her biggest markets worldwide, promo for the album release was needed, she's such a 'casual' draw, and needs to be a more visible than she has been, outside the media dragging her every move. Her past promos have done wonders for her. even when they are largely terrible tv performances.

I think all these things would have helped but she's clearly far from her peak and the social media and press bandwagon hate hasn't helped also.

Oh well, still a good album. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 16th June 2017, 06:42 PM

I'm gonna say the 3 main points...

A) Going away for too long, that's essentially a lifetime in today's pop world.

B) Bon Appétit

C) Maybe not adapting as well to the current climate? I mean, when she was last around it was pre-streaming/pre-OAOS and a different ball game. It felt like although CTTR was a decent sized hit that it never exactly hit the ground running.

Point B mainly though.

Posted by: Jonjo 16th June 2017, 07:07 PM

Disappointing debut! sad.gif But I really think this is her equivalent to 'My December'/'Blackout'/'Try This' and basically the album she wanted to make, but the label weren't really bothered about it as much? So they probs asked her to record 'Bon Appetit' and 'Swish Swish' just so they had radio ready songs to release (and they weren't anticipating BA to backfire quite as much as it did!)

Didn't Kelly make a deal with her label and say that she'll do whatever they want her to do, as long as she gets to make 'My December' or something (and iirc the label got her to record 'Never Again' for the radio)? I imagine a similar scenario in all honesty. This album is a LOT more personable for Katy I feel and I reckon we'll be back to the big radio hits and her "career revival" in the next era. She'll be back with her 'My Life Would Suck...'/'Womanizer'/'Who Knew' I'm sure.

Posted by: Ryan. 16th June 2017, 10:38 PM

I don't like the album but music quality aside, she was way for three whole years ignoring Rise and came back perfectly with Chained To The Rhythm. But then it feels like she just suddenly pushed two singles and a whole album out all at once. I know that wasn't quite the case but how on earth did it all feel so rushed in the end when she had a whole three years off?

While the music is of course a major factor, her label really should've have left the album until August. A new Katy album, arguably the world's biggest popstar during her last era, after three years away should have felt like a major occasion but it just didn't. Even Chained To The Rhythm which did very well and was very good still didn't feel like a momentous occasion that it should've been.

I'd agree with Joe that Rise could have ruined a bit of suspense but at the same time I feel like everyone forgot that after a couple of weeks anyway. I'd just file Rise under the same category as Sweeter Than Fiction was for Taylor in between two massive eras in Red and 1989, the equivalent of a soundtrack single.

Save As Draft and Mind Maze are the absolute worst, both hideous puke.gif

This was a disaster I agree, it just feels a bit like.... everything was off. Some of it was just small stuff but there was no promo, the single preceeding the album didn't do well, there wasn't much of a window between us knowing about the album and it being released either. Plus whilst it's objective, the music just isn't good. Well, even if you do like it, it's not particularly accessible. I get that it's what she wanted to release and make, but this is a disaster of an era and I can't see that there is any song on the album that would save it. Swish Swish would probably do well I guess but it's not an album seller.

People have come back from eras like this though, it's not like she's over. She just needs the big pop moments that hit you like a truck back, not this 38th place BJSC blogpop shite.

It really is low BJSC blog pop.

She can bounce back, but will she want to? She took years off to bake pies in the iamspamspamamilike NellyF. Will the big producers help her out as much? She will HAVE to come back soon and with bigger hits and more hard work. I'm not sure she has the ambition to do it.

She's got a slot on American Idol lined up for next year already. As a judge, not a musical guest.

Posted by: Andrew. 18th June 2017, 04:56 PM

I'd say the drop in sales is pretty much ALL down to the long gap (a similar thing happened to Avril with TBDT era doing well but not as well as the last two, a flop non-album single a couple years later then the next album doing really badly), the negative publicity, poor single choices and a rushed album release. I honestly think it's nothing to do with the material which is her best yet imo. Quick lil rate~

10 Witness
10 Hey Hey Hey (don't get the hate for this at all? The production on these first two tracks in particular is incredible *.*)
08 Roulette
09 Swish Swish
08 Deja Vu
11 Power
09 Mind Maze
06 Miss You More
08 Chained To The Rhythm (got really bored of this all of a sudden)
09 Tsunami
10 Bon Appetit
08 Bigger Than Me
08 Save As Draft
07 Pendulum
06 Into Me You See

I think Power would be in incredible single, obviously I'm biased as it's my favourite but it's something different at least.

Posted by: cqmerqn 18th June 2017, 05:34 PM

Favourite is CTTR :/

Posted by: SamJudd 18th June 2017, 09:42 PM

While this may not be as bad as the critics make out and there are some really decent moments on here, but on the whole it's overlong and could have easily been trimmed down to 11 or 12 tracks. Compared to her other albums, this definitely ranks at the bottom unfortunately. There were 40 tracks recorded for this and it would be interesting to hear what those sounded like.

08 Witness
05 Hey Hey Hey
10 Roulette
09 Swish Swish
07 Deja Vu
08 Power
04 Mind Maze
06 Miss You More
10 Chained To The Rhythm
03 Tsunami
04 Bon Appetit'
05 Bigger Than Me
06 Save As Draft
07 Pendulum
07 Into Me You See

Best Tracks: Chained To The Rhythm, Roulette, Swish Swish, Witness, Power
Worst Tracks: Tsunami, Bon Appetit', Mind Maze

Definitely a smart move releasing 'CTTR' first as it is the best track and got the ball rolling, but 'BA' was a mistake and maybe would have worked better as a post album single maybe. I think for the 2nd single the title track could have worked better and while it may not stand as one of her best singles, I doubt there would have been so much backlash against her like 'BA' did. 'Swish, Swish' as the 3rd single, maybe as a post album single maybe. Then 'Roulette' which hopefully will become the next single, as that should help the album sell more and with a banging music video that could put things on the right track for her. If there would be a 5th single either 'Into Me You See', 'Power' or even 'Bon Appetit' where I know I said the latter was awful, but as a post album single it may have worked better for her.

1st Single = 'Chained To The Rhythm' (Feat Skip Marley)
2nd Single = 'Witness'
Buzz Single #1: 'Deja Vu'
Buzz Single #2: 'Swish, Swish'

-ALBUM RELEASE-
3rd Single = 'Swish Swish' (Ft Nicki Minaj)
4th Single = 'Roulette'
5th Single = 'Power' or 'Bon Appetit (Ft Migos)'

Posted by: Jonjo 18th June 2017, 09:47 PM

As an album, I definitely prefer this over 'Prism' I think. It's a lot more consistent, despite the highs not coming close to matching the highs on that album.

Posted by: Cremey 19th June 2017, 08:12 PM

If that's true about 'Save As Draft'...

'Roulette' is just screaming for a release next. They should give 'Swish Swish' time first though, no need to rush another single out (especially if it's 'Save As Draft' which will kill the era straight away)

Posted by: Liаm 19th June 2017, 08:39 PM

LMAOOOO you couldn't make this up. Leaving my personal opinion of the "song" aside, I think that would be possibly THE biggest misfire of a single from a pop girl that I can remember. Wow.

I expect it's just one of those radio singles to put out in tandem with the main thing, unless they are actually trying to kill the era. I think it's only being sent to AC so it may be a move to try and shift more albums, as of course Swish Swish won't reach adult contemporary radio, although SAD would still be my last choice for that...

Just to clarify, Capitol is sending this only to adult pop radio stations. There's not any information that this will be pushed to all the US radio formats, where "Swish Swish" is still the current pop and rhythmic single.

I'm not sure if this could be the right comparison (sorry if it isn't), but it would be something like BBC Radio 2 or Heart playlisted this in the UK.

Posted by: Joe. 19th June 2017, 09:00 PM

Apparently Swish has been slowly pulled and the video has been cancelled and this will eventually go to Pop.

I think with a killer video Swish definitely has the potential to smash! What a waste.

If Capitol wants to push something to pop in case they don't want to continue promoting "Swish Swish", it should be "Roulette", not "Save As Draft". The latter doesn't scream an adult pop crossover to mainstream pop radio in my opinion.

Posted by: Liаm 19th June 2017, 09:17 PM

It legit sounds like a #33 on the AC chart from like Katharine McPhee in 2011 laugh.gif I don't see why they'd not want to push Swish Swish, it's the only realistic chance of another decent hit from this era imo.

A single called Save as Draft is EMBARRASSING.

Posted by: Juliano 19th June 2017, 11:08 PM

Oh dear Roulette had to be the next single... for me the only hit potential left on the album... Swish could easily be the Dark Horse/E.T. of the era if it was pushed.

Witness opens at #1 in the US with 180,000 equivalent sales (or 162,000 pure sales). Not bad at all but Prism opened with 286,000 pure sales so there's definitely signs of a big decline in popularity there too. nocheer.gif

For comparison, Joanne opened with 201,000 equivalent sales, Glory opened with 111,000 equivalent sales and Dangerous Woman opened with 175,000 equivalent sales.

I'm still not a massive lover of Swish Swish but I'm really hoping we get a video for it soon and it really turns the era around. The last thing she needs right now is for Save As Draft to be a single (of any sort, really laugh.gif)...

Katy Perry has marked the one-year anniversary of her fifth studio album, Witness, by releasing a new deluxe edition of the LP -- and some behind-the-scenes footage of the process behind it, too.
In a quick, heartfelt birthday card for the album, Perry reflects on the year she's spent touring in support of Witness and what she's learned from the experience. "Thank you for witnessing me," she writes. "I hope I've helped you feel safe, seen & celebrated while on tour!"

She then pointed fans in the direction of a video of her and her team working on "Power" in the studio, complete with chatter in between takes and snippets of the track in progress. She opens up about her relationship with her mother, and how talks through the inspiration for the lyrics as they come to her.

Wow I'm a bit shocked at the response! I'm not a massive Katy fan infact I've always found her to be very overrated and samey, but out of curiosity I listened to the whole album and is actually a solid album for me. Love that she's tried something different and experimented with her sound. The title track is very very good and in my opinion the singles are among the weaker tracks on the album. Can't see it being a huge seller but it's kinda good by her standards for me anyways.

I don’t know what I was smoking here but I’ve listened to the album again and only liked four tracks!

It either got old very quickly or I was just being very generous laugh.gif

The 4 tracks I liked were Chained To The Rhythm, Pendulum, Roulette and Witness. Maybe 5 with Bigger Than Me too.

But stuff like Hey Hey Hey, Tsunami, Mind Maze, Bon Appetit, Swish Swish, Save As Draft and Into Me You See are awful.

I’m in agreement with a poster who said some tracks she doesn’t really have the voice to carry off too. Into Me You See is awful vocally almost on Thinking of You levels.

I’m still in respect of her for doing something different though with this campaign but after hearing her all albums as a whole over the last week this is probably bottom of the pile for me.

I am not following.

I thought the industry (radio etc.) made 'Chained' as big as it was.

Yup, that's wrong. It flopped due to the wrong songs and a very poor marketing campaign/ Katy's own goofa. There was no conspiracy.

1. Roulette
2. Tsunami

Two masive hits right there.

3. That takes us to Halloween. Bon Appetit!! But marketed as a comedy horror track for Halloween. If it still doesn't latch, until on youtube, that's fine, go with, 4. Witness

4. Witness

5. Deja Vu

6. Chained to the Rhythm

And that's job done

Basically anything but the singles after CTTR

It wasn’t a huge song but it did reasonably well, the album as a whole isn’t fuelled by single worthy songs like her previous albums

I mean it could be farfetched, but regardless, I’m happy that Katy is kind of getting her flowers on social media at the moment. There was a few years of her seeming like the butt of jokes or at least not well regarded or respected, so I’m happy if the tide is turning now. heart.gif

Also I never really understood why Witness is so hated, there’s more than enough good songs on there to have been worthwhile! I appreciate her doing something different too. It would have been so easy to rehash a mix of Teenage Dream and Prism at that stage.
