Justin Bieber is back with another track, this time as a feature on David Guetta's '2U' - can he replace himself from #1 yet again? Other new singles include Sigala & Ella Eyre's 'Came Here for Love', Annie LeBlanc & Hayden Summerall's 'Little Do You Know', Miley Cyrus' 'Inspired' and Alma's 'Chasing Heights', whilst Ariana's charity live rendition of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', released midweek last week, will be hoping to make an impact on the chart.

A big week for albums as London Grammar and Katy Perry go head to head with their respective albums. Other new releases include albums from Fleetwood Mac members' Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie, Lady Antebellum, Glen Campbell and Rise Against.

From Mint Royale:

The Katy Perry album is at 4, selling less than 1/3rd of London Grammar at number 1. I think it's fair to say her imperial phase has ended.

Posted by: Willy's Tears 10th June 2017, 12:51 PM

Lol.

Expect it to fall further.

The more people hear the bland tuneless mess and the more teviews the more it falls.

Posted by: George.keh 10th June 2017, 12:53 PM

Witness definitely isn't her best but Roulette sounds like a smash hit in the future

Posted by: liamk97 10th June 2017, 12:55 PM

My guess is that Glen Campbell and Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie are in the Top 3 at this stage.

Posted by: Mart!n 10th June 2017, 12:55 PM

I expected London Grammar to be #1, but I think Ed Sheeran will be #1 by the end of the week.

Still yet to hear the new album from London Grammar

Please stop trolling, I think everyone has heard your views on the new Katy Perry material.

Posted by: Dobbo 10th June 2017, 01:03 PM

Guetta will be absolutely nowhere near #1 (in terms of sales), Despacito is still galaxies ahead and will probably remain that way for the entire summer. Top 5 for 2U with an increase in peak in later weeks when its streaming has built up.

Sigella I would say top 30 is possible.

Posted by: timjimlee 10th June 2017, 01:10 PM

Clear number 1 Album for London Grammar this week, 'Truth Is A Beautiful Thing' !

Posted by: danG 10th June 2017, 01:14 PM

Having heard the David Guetta track I can't see it going to #1, it'll be this year's Let Me Love You equivalent.

Despacito will be #1 all summer long.

Poor Katy, although I knew that it wouldn't have a chance against LG

Posted by: Robbie 10th June 2017, 02:39 PM

Katy Perry has had a good run of hits stretching back over 9 years so it was to be expected that at some point the hits would become smaller and her sales would decline. To be honest, one top 10 hit single apart, she has struggled for the past 4 years. As Echo & The Bunnymen once sang "nothing (ever) lasts forever".

Yes lots of artists naturally decline after a while due to changes in the market but Katy is a victim due the fact her latest material just isn't as strong. Chained to the rhythm was decent but is probably the strongest most commercial friendly cut on the album but there is very little else which is likely to strike her a substantial sized hit this time around.

Re Mint Royale's comment that "The Katy Perry album is at 4, selling less than 1/3rd of London Grammar at number 1" what ballpark figures do people think that puts their respective Sales on, KP on 8K and LG on 24K ?
Surely not less than 8K for KP?

Maybe 16k for LG and 5k for KP?

I said earlier that KP prob sold 5k but it would surprise me that LG have sold 15k on day 1. I expected LG to open with 10k first day but surely KP couldnt have sold just 3.3k.

Also, I asked this in the Lorde thread just now but I thought I'd post it here too as it's likely to gather more predictions here.

Predix for Melodrama next week? I'm going with 20k, just slightly higher than her debut albums opening sales.

My prediction is around 15k, doesn't seem much hype around it which is a shame because all the tracks so far are A+

I expected a lot more from LG than 10k, debut Album opened with 33k (week sales) and sold well after. Anyway 25k for the week should be enough and it's still top of iTunes although worryingly it is down to 5 on Amazon best sellers.

I think the point is that they've recovered from flops in the past. Kylie and Madonna in particular have had their floppier eras and managed to storm back with smash hits, so it's not the end of Katy's singles chart success yet!

Maybe not anymore, but after their eras in which these sorts of comments were made, they came back with eras that were a lot stronger and more commercially appealing, some were even considered "career bests" for them.

Posted by: dennispennis123 11th June 2017, 01:38 AM

Not too surprised Katy is flopping in terms of her previous standards. Her singles so far have been well below her previous standard.

I've always thought her fanbase is pretty weak for an artist of her reputation. I just dont see her having that many committed fans who will keep buying her records when the quality dips.

Posted by: Bjork 11th June 2017, 06:26 AM

Madonna didnt have any flop era unti mdna and
She actually never recovered from that

Posted by: Dexton 11th June 2017, 06:46 AM

When was Pinks "flop era" ???

Posted by: SKOB 11th June 2017, 07:03 AM

You can always argue about this but I think if an album goes platinum or even gold in today's sales climate when 6k/week is enough for top ten none of those acts have ever flopped.

We can of course pretend that everyone should be as successful as Madonna with tens and tens of top ten hits for 30 years but that's not gonna happen to anyone else except Madonna herself (maybe Rihanna but she's not even halfway there)

If we are discussing flops we should discuss Nelly Furtado, Paula Abdul, some of J. Lo's albums (Brave and AKA), maybe Christina Aguilera's Lotus

1992-1996 and the "American LIfe" were certainly at the time considered to be flops. Of course the top 10 singles still came but she wasn't selling anything like what she sold 1984-1991 or 1998-2002.

The thing is though, when they experienced this it was a lot easier to come back from it. We live in an age now where radio stations will essentially blacklist you (if you're a pop act of this calibre) for flopping.

This sounds absolutely awful but I think Katy shaving her head ruined it all. CTTR was a big hit here in the UK but she had long hair then. Seems as though people are thinking there's stigma in liking Katy now as she has 'gone crazy', to quote what many people have said.

This may be the most ridiculous post you have seen but I think it's true. People think Katy has gone crazy since CTTR so they just don't want to listen to her atm. I for one love Katy's new style and I struggle to understand why people would change their opinion of her just for changing her hairstyle.

Thoughts on this?

Posted by: Dobbo 11th June 2017, 10:20 AM

Interesting post actually but Britney & Jessie J had big hits after such including #1 singles (ok Jessie J did it for charity iirc so that's fair enough) - I just think Bon Appetit & Swish Swish are really not that commercial or accessible singles to the majority of the public.

We all know all it takes is a feature on a massive single to completely turn things around so you can never write anyone off...

I definitely see where you're coming from! It could be misinterpreted by other people but you've definitely got the right idea.

I think for years the public were used to Katy releasing pure pop only and having an accessible pop girl look - so her shaving her head and making changes to her image (which had been the same from 2009-16 previously) and her music was probably what made the public less invested in her as an artist. We all know how fickle the GP is right now, so because Katy is taking a musical risk and switching up her style, they're a LOT less invested in her as an artist.

I'd go as far to say that the only real reason Swish Swish is becoming a hit is because it's got that familiar house sound that's popular at the moment (Disciples, Jax Jones, John Gibbons etc.) - where as Bon Appétit was something totally different for her (it was still Katy by numbers but definitely had less of the poppy sound she usually brings into her 'novelty tracks', so it flopped as the public weren't willing to give her changed persona the time of day.

By the way, I also love this Witness era, but I really get where you're coming from.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 11th June 2017, 10:35 AM

I actually think that is completely ridiculous (as per).

Posted by: John-James 11th June 2017, 11:14 AM

I just don't think people like her new music as much. I've seen a few posts on Facebook with people complaining about 'new' Katy and wondering what happened to the 'old' Katy.

This video for example got shared onto my timeline and has got +10,000 views: https://www.facebook.com/ItsWhatSheDeserves/videos/vb.569802076513790/748908358603160/?type=2&theater

Posted by: Scene 11th June 2017, 11:21 AM

I think it's a consequence of many things:

(a) losing her trademark long black hair.

(b) becoming overly political (for a pop star)

© shift in sound

(d) making "insensitive" jokes

(e) public being sheep

(f) Taylor

I found CTTR by-numbers but have grown to like it. Bon Appetit gets too much hate and Swish Swish is probably my favourite song of 2017 so far. This era is already better than PRISM imo so it is sad to see it underperforming.

Posted by: GTH 11th June 2017, 11:50 AM

I just don't think the material Katy has put out this era is as strong as her prior eras. Even then, the singles are so far removed from each other, it is confusing for consumers in figuring out what you will get from the album. It is not a cohesive collection of tracks. I don't think Bon Appetit was the right choice for the second single, they should have gone with something closer in style to Chained To The Rhythm.

Katy is a big name still and I doubt this will be the career ending campaign many are calling out on here. It has definitely caused damage but nothing a solid follow up couldn't heal.

Posted by: dennispennis123 11th June 2017, 01:53 PM

At the end of the day, if Katy had released another Roar it would have been a huge hit.

If after Chained To The Rhythm. she had a released another Dark Horse instead of Bon Appetit it would have been a huge hit.

The tracks she has released just have not been good enough.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 11th June 2017, 02:47 PM

'Bon Appétit' is going to go down in years to come as a key example of a career killing single.

Plus also there hasn't really been a classic HUGE Katy chorus this era which you can usually rely on her for. sad.gif

I remember Katy fans overjoyed when Joanne, a pop-country album, reached no.3 on the Albums chart instead of no.1 despite PI having no real impact here, hmm. I can't say Witness is a good album (Hey Hey Hey and CTTR are the only salvageable tracks) but I still reckon she'll make the top 10, top 5 if she's lucky. With Lorde and Lana releasing the next charting week, I can't imagine her staying another week in the top 10. Hope London Grammar cling on to number 01, so glad they're back!!

I agree in general; she changed too much all at once. There may be a gem of truth to the short hair thing; it's unfortunate that the last reference to a pop star cutting her hair off is Miley Cyrus who flipped a switch from wholesome to extreme and has recently flipped that switch back in the other direction, now disowning her short hair era.

I liked Chained to the Rhythm a lot, Bon Appetit almost as much, Swish Swish not in the slightest. Her uncool SNL performances going viral as short video clips haven't helped her though. Ultimately yes, Bon Appetit was a poor choice for single #2, and not helped by its video straddling the line between cheeky and a bit gross. Also the fact the album on the whole sounds next to nothing like any of its singles, so even people who'd been enjoying 'new Katy' don't get to hear more of her on it.

Spotify though, and e.g. Amazon, itunes previews. Physical album sales are at an all-time low. How many people have a wee listen on Spotify or the previews before deciding to buy something, instead of just buying out of blind loyalty; especially at a time when young people have less disposable income? I'd hazard a fair chunk, given that the tech is available to do so nowadays. Buying without knowing what you're getting could easily be framed as a stupid idea nowadays.

Great comment, i Agree with most of what u said even though I liked Swish Swish and i was shocked it wasn't a hit...to sum things up, i think the main reason behind Katy's new era's relative failure is that she stopped catering to young and teen female audiences and started targeting gay adult males, which is harmful in the short run but very helpful in the long run, just like Madonna's Erotica album... Katy Perry's managment knows that her days as a teen idol are almost over since she's now approaching her mid 30s,, and instead are promoting her as a gay icon, and her appearance with drag queens on Swish Swish's SNL performance just confirms that.... Bon Appetit and Swish Swish were panned by her teen audiences, but the gays loved these two songs.... the only problem with her new album though is thAt it doesn't sound like the 3 singles at all, which is a shame, and instead is an autotuned ballads collections and fails to excite her new target audience....

Think there's still a chance she could stay Top 5 if Lindsey/Christine fall behind; definitely in the 5-7 region though. Seems odd to think she'll be selling only ~6k more than Britney's Glory did.

You can put this off as a marketing gimmick, however even with 100k fewer sales, Katy would get the #1 in the US.

Also, that doesn't explain an overall divergence in the album chart.

Look at the #1 BB200 albums working backwards from this coming week:

Katy Perry, Halsey, Bryson Tiller, Linkin Park, Harry Styles, Logic, Kendrick Lamar(2x), The Chainsmokers, Drake (3x), Ed Sheeran (2x), Future, Future

I think Liam will be #4... with French Montana at #3 as he has the streaming advantage.

David Guetta looks likely to slip to at least #5, which is still a good showing but considering the track has Justin Bieber on it, it could've done better.

As for ALMA remaining top 40... I wouldn't count on it. Expect the likes of 'Human', 'Places' and 'The Cure' to overtake it by the end of the week.

And as we're getting the whole top 100 anyway later on here's a few ~highlights~ from the rest of the chart

43. Major Lazer feat. Travis Scott, Camila Cabello & Quavo - Know No Better
49. Olly Murs & Louisa Johnson - Unpredictable
51. Katy Perry feat. Nicki Minaj - Swish Swish
54. Katy Perry feat. Migos - Bon Appetit
63. Miley Cyrus - Inspired
86. Sigrid - Don't Kill My Vibe (re-entry)
89. Arcade Fire - Everything Now
90. London Grammar - Oh Woman Oh Man

Posted by: Brett-Butler 12th June 2017, 03:00 PM

30k for London Grammar is a pretty strong opening, especially given that it didn't have two big top 40 singles to precede it like its predecessor.

Yes Bionic is what springs to my mind. laugh.gif Katy's never really been an album artist though. Her debut never cracked the top 10 (and I think a lot of its sales came in 2010 off the back of TD) and Teenage Dream took ages to get over a million despite a phenomenally successful singles campaign.

I obviously know this is a terrible result for Katy, but in her defense, she really isn't a fanbase act like 1D, Little Mix, Gaga or even Beyonce. She's the kind of act that the UK public react to hits/promo. If she'd released it off the back of Chained which was a big hit here or had come to the UK and done Graham Norton or BGT, I think she'd have been selling well. Her interest has evaporated a lot, no doubt but it really does feel slightly of a case of nobody knowing she's even released anything.

Looks like Ariana will fall out by the end of the week - so the only newies released on Friday we'll have will assumably be David Guetta at around 3-6, and Sigala between 30 and 40. Sigala will stay in for sure, he's been added to Hot Hits UK relatively high so his streaming will get a lot better from tomorrow.

Very disappointing opening for Katy Perry, from time to time i enjoy a single from Katy Perry, but have liked nothing from the new era at all. While her opening week looks disappointing, it will be more interesting to see how the album performs next week as the fans would be out in force this week to purchase it.

The run of British number 1's on the Album chart continues (only one non-British number 1 this year and that was a Soundtrack), wonder whether Lorde, Imagine Dragons, Haim, Lana or Arcade Fire can halt this run - personally hope all manage to make it!

Speaking of Lorde, I think she'll be lucky to get #2, I was thinking she'll probably debut with around 15/16k, most likely behind Royal Blood and Ed Sheeran, but I guess it depends how London Grammar hold up next week as well, she could be pushed down to #4

I'm unsure. The week they release will be when the Glastonbury effect will kick in and Ed Sheeran is headlining, so I think a return to #1 could be likely. Imagine Dragon's last album sold 26k in its first week and I think this one could debut a little lower or at least a similar amount. Given Ed is already selling in the mid-20ks, he could easily sell a lot more on top of that with the Glastonbury effect. Speaking of which, Radiohead are also headlining and release the anniversary edition of OK Computer that week - I can seem them too doing well, maybe not enough to be ahead of Imagine Dragons, but who knows?

I don't think people are saying the album is bad but if you release three very underwhelming singles to push the album then fewer people are going to rush out to buy the album to hear what else is on it.

And I think Katy is very reliant on big singles to push album sales, she doesn't have the type of fanbase who will rush out first week and buy her album regardless.

To be fair though, each of the singles has also had some other sort of hype/interest around it to make people buy/stream it.

Chained to the Rhythm was Katy's hyped up comeback single, of course people would instantly jump on that when it was released. Also featured Bob Marley's grandson,

Bon Appetite had the whole cannibalism/playful/gross/sexual video to go along with it and that would've helped introduce people to it (for better or worse). Also featured the increasingly popular Migos (also known as Quavo & friends).

And Swish Swish is an anti-Taylor, house-infused pop song. Also featured Queen Nicki Minaj.

Regarding the video, I don't think it came out early enough to really provide a great amount of momentum behind the track. If it was ready at the same time as Bon Appetit was released, or even the week after release I am sure it would have had a better peak and have a longer chart run.

Even with this still, it was never going to be a big smash hit here.

Posted by: Cremey 13th June 2017, 02:45 PM

'Bon Appetit' completely killed the momentum for 'Witness'. Up until then I think it was all looking really positive. I'm hoping 'Swish Swish' can reverse some of that a bit, it's already looking like it'll be a much bigger hit than 'Bon Appetit' and that's without any real airplay. It's odd the numbers are so much lower than her last album though, even considering the lack of interest since 'Bon Appetit'. I think quite a lot of it actually is down to people not realising it's out, as poor an excuse as that sounds.

The music video for "Swish Swish" should be comcing soon (I believe they've already filmed it?). Perhaps that being released will help get the song moving up the chart a bit more!

maybe it's Dr Luke's touch that she's missing, it's her first album without him

She's still working with Max Martin though, who was also involved in most of her major hits alongside Luke. Max has produced notable hits for Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake and P!nk within the past year or so. I don't the production is the issue.

Posted by: cqmerqn 13th June 2017, 08:27 PM

I think her recent stuff just sounds tacky and lacks her signature big choruses!

Posted by: gavindeejay 13th June 2017, 08:57 PM

Heard 'Swish Swish' on Kiss for the first time today, didn't realise it samples Fatboy Slim's Star 69. Its pretty good to be fair....certainly the best song I've heard from her for a while.

Posted by: cqmerqn 13th June 2017, 08:58 PM

So it is getting airplay then. Hopefully it returns to the top 40 soon.

Posted by: Scene 13th June 2017, 10:50 PM

Swish Swish is one of the songs of the year! Nicki is on form too. heart.gif

Yesss, I hope Kiss continue to play it!

The video will undoubtedly give the song a big boost in the US and UK, it just needs to come in time.

And it needs to be a bit more tasteful than the Bon Appetit video mellow.gif

I think the problem with swish swish is that primarily it's an instant grat so until she promotes it proper it's only really word of mouth it is much better than Bon appetit she really should have released the other way round

Our mistake guys, this is the Tuesday update! We got it very early this morning kink.gif

Sorrrry.

Mids that arrive on the day are usually for that actual day. Will update if we get more info before the Music Week update.

I think Guetta/Bieber will fall to No. 5 by Friday, with French Montana at 3 and Liam at 4. Hopefully Niall can climb to 6!

EDIT: I'll reserve my predictions until we get the proper Wednesday updates then!

Unbelievable that Ben Homewood at Music week makes a big thing of London Grammar's new album beating first week sales of their debut, gives the first week sale for their debut and then seemingly forgets to say how much their new album has sold this week.

Posted by: timjimlee 14th June 2017, 05:21 PM

Rag 'N' Bone Man looking likely to overtake Katy and hold on to that Top 5 Album spot (next week likely to be more of a challenge to keep the run going).

Posted by: Jamie Barkley 14th June 2017, 05:49 PM

Do we know of any Taylor Swift tracks knocking about now she's back on streaming? I guess it's maybe the album that will benefit more

Posted by: danG 14th June 2017, 05:56 PM

None in the top 100 but Shake It Off is comfortably top 200. And 1989 is #40 in the albums.

Posted by: cqmerqn 14th June 2017, 05:58 PM

It's actually #36 tongue.gif

Posted by: mdh 14th June 2017, 06:08 PM

Also YAY at Know No Better doing so well, another top 40 hit for Quavo dance.gif (Sigala looking good for top 30 also ohmy.gif)
