Posted by: THEO. Aug 18 2014, 11:41 AM

This sounds very Messy Little Raindrops...

Posted by: Liаm Aug 18 2014, 11:46 AM

Obviously a title isn't something you can necessarily draw much from but all I get from this title is that it'll be one of those "you're amazing, remember to love yourself because you're special!!1!1" songs laugh.gif

Posted by: AdamAloud Aug 18 2014, 12:47 PM

Why not just call it 'Stars'. laugh.gif

Posted by: -Jay- Aug 18 2014, 03:08 PM

Interesting title! Won't judge it further than that until I've heard the song.

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 18 2014, 03:37 PM

People hated "Sexy den a mutha" as a title and it turned out to be the one song everyone wanted to be released as a single off AML once they heard it. So never judge a song by its title. smile.gif

Posted by: April Aug 18 2014, 03:44 PM

^That's very true Hayzayy.

It's certainly an intriguing title.

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 20 2014, 07:56 AM

Now she's teasing the title "I don't care" on Instagram, so I guess we don't know what's the next single is yet and she's randomly teasing song titles laugh.gif

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 21 2014, 04:46 PM

According to new rumors concerning the second single :

- single title is "I Don't Care"
- music video for the single is filmed in Marbella/Málaga, Spain
- video is directed by the same director as Crazy Stupid Love (Colin Tilley)

This has to be verified/confirmed though!

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 22 2014, 09:32 AM

She's been seen in Malaga (Spain) the same day as Colin Tilley, so that pretty much confirms he is directing the new video !
Quite hot since he did the Anaconda video too kink.gif

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 22 2014, 12:02 PM

Right, she's posted a picture from the video set in Malaga with the hashtag #idontcare so the second single will definitely be "I Don't Care" !

Posted by: AdamAloud Aug 22 2014, 12:32 PM

Can't wait, I've been listening to Cheryl's albums a lot the past few days and even 'Crazy Stupid Love' has grown on me a tremendous amount the last month or so!

Posted by: Cameron Aug 22 2014, 12:33 PM

Hopefully Jameela wont confuse it with Icona Pop's 'I Don't Care' on the chart show laugh.gif

Posted by: THEO. Aug 22 2014, 01:48 PM

Exciting news coming through! I'm guessing it's another uptempo if the video director is the same/she's flown to Spain for it - an autumnal ballad could easily have been filmed in the UK given our current climate - and the title gives a cheeky, uptempo feeling. I'm looking forward to whatever she throws out way, regardless! cheer.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles Aug 22 2014, 03:04 PM

Very very excited for this, still loving Crazy Stupid Love and I hope this is at least as good, if not better biggrin.gif

Giving me Sats 'Missing You' vibes and I love that video so I'm excited!

Posted by: London81 Aug 26 2014, 12:33 AM

I can't wait to hear this! Please be a mid to up tempo song. Ballards never go well for chezza!

Cheryl Tells Us ALL About Her New Song 'I Don't Care'... And Teases The Video
28th August 2014, 10:41

The 'Call My Name' star exclusively opened up to Capital about her new song this week, confirming the title of the track as 'I Don't Care'.

"I have just shot the video, it was a lot of fun," Cheryl exclusively told Capital's showbiz reporter Kevin Hughes. "It's something I've never done before, I was outdoors.

"A lot of the time I'm on set, so I had a lot of freedom," she explained. "It's called 'I Don't Care', it sums up pretty much how I feel right now. [It's] very pop, but fun pop!"

'I Don't Care' will be the #Soldiers' next slice of new music from Cheryl, after her return this summer with lead track 'Crazy Stupid Love'.

Before you know it Cheryl will be back with a new album, so watch this space for more news on her next single 'I Don't Care'.

Fun pop ! cheer.gif w00t.gif

Posted by: mr_aly Aug 28 2014, 12:40 PM

Does that indicate she's not releasing the album off the back of this single, or have I just interpreted that wrongly?

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 28 2014, 01:01 PM

It's pretty much a given that she will release the album with the new single.

Posted by: AdamAloud Aug 28 2014, 01:03 PM

I'd be very surprised if she didn't release the album after this single! Her past three albums have only had 1 pre-album single so I can't see this having three!

Posted by: Hayzayy Aug 28 2014, 01:27 PM

I think CAPITAL just worded it badly and basically they mean she will be back with the new album soon so we should stay tuned to get more info about it.

Posted by: -Jay- Aug 28 2014, 06:35 PM

Great news! Was wondering whether the song could verge on the midtempo side of things based on the video pics, so glad to hear it's "fun pop".

Posted by: James ⭐ Aug 28 2014, 06:54 PM

I really want an Under The Sun part 2!

I'm so excited for I Don't Care, still addicted to Crazy Stupid Love also! Bonnie McKee ohmy.gif!

Posted by: Dane Sep 6 2014, 11:31 PM

Hope this is as good as her other singles, I think even though we haven't heard it it's pretty much guaranteed top 3 or even number 1. Especially as she will have an X Factor performance. Don't think there's one Cheryl song I don't like she's not an incredible vocalist but she always has such catchy songs! When I first heard Crazy Stupid Love I thought it was quite forgettable but after a week or so I was addicted. She really is the queen of pop in the UK for this generation, she's also coming across as amazing as ever on this years X-factor. wub.gif

I am so super excited for the premiere, only a few hours to go before I get to know the one song I will stan over for the next 5 months. kink.gif

YAAAAY cannot wait wub.gif

omg my poor chart, with 1D, Carrie and Cheryl all premiering new songs on the same week sad.gif laugh.gif

Love that artwork wub.gif

Posted by: mr_aly Sep 30 2014, 02:03 PM

I do agree that for once the covers are looking a lot better, although it'd be nice if they could still decide whether it's Cheryl or Cheryl Cole and keep that consistent.

Posted by: JosephStyles Sep 30 2014, 02:08 PM

laugh.gif last.fm nightmare, decided to keep her as Cheryl Cole last time and I'll do the same this time cause I really can't be arsed re-scrobbling it all kink.gif Think she'll be sticking with Cheryl now anyway now that she doesn't go by Cole at all.

Posted by: Ryan. Sep 30 2014, 02:13 PM

Incredible artwork, it's so simple but she looks gorgeous and it's just so happy and perfect for this "fun pop" track we're getting.

Posted by: J▲hq Sep 30 2014, 04:27 PM

I do love the artwork, the font and general simplicity of it is nice but I think it/her facial expression really suits the song title. tongue.gif

Posted by: -Jay- Sep 30 2014, 04:36 PM

Ooh I like cover! Can't wait to hear the song. I just wish she had been 'Cheryl' for Crazy Stupid Love as well. Considering she was 'Cheryl' for album 3, it looks messy that she went back to 'Cheryl Cole' for one single, only to revert back to 'Cheryl' again!

~~~~~
I wish there had been proper artwork for Call My Name & Under The Sun, it's not like there was a lack of great pictures to use from that era. sad.gif Just a reminder of those covers:
That 'Under The Sun' artwork was used for both its digital release and the promo cd, but that 'Call My Name' artwork was only used for digital; its promo cd cover was this:
Sorry for going off topic. kink.gif
Posted by: JosephStyles Sep 30 2014, 04:58 PM
I ended up making my own covers for Call My Name and Under the Sun using a picture from each music video. If you're interested:
Posted by: Liаm Sep 30 2014, 05:43 PM
Two Reigan Derry tracks from X-Factor Au, Carrie, Fergie and now this, I echo Joseph's "my poor chart" comment laugh.gif but I can't wait, hope it impresses on first listen rather than taking about 2 months like CSL. I've gone off that a bit now too laugh.gif
Posted by: Neil. S Sep 30 2014, 06:10 PM
I lik under the sun one a lot Joe wub.gif Can't wait to hear I Don't Care. Just hope it manages to deliver
Posted by: -Jay- Sep 30 2014, 07:24 PM
Those covers are about a million times better than the real things, Joseph! biggrin.gif
Posted by: April Sep 30 2014, 08:09 PM
The real things are awful. No imagination AT ALL. I'm glad they've put effort into her single covers this era.
Posted by: THEO. Sep 30 2014, 08:41 PM
I love the artwork and it (hopefully) represents exactly the song exactly as Cheryl's described it to us as - fun! I'm so excited for to hear it now. I'm guessing the album will be another "Cheryl" only release so my iTunes will once again flip! tongue.gif
Posted by: Only Human Sep 30 2014, 10:04 PM
Apparently it's her best song yet... EXCITED is an understatement!
Can't wait to hear it wub.gif
Posted by: Ryan. Sep 30 2014, 11:49 PM
Apparently the release date is November 9th in case that hasn't been mentioned. The pre-order is now on iTunes but it doesn't seem to be working properly yet so I can't see the date for myself, but someone on ATRL says that's the date so I assume that's right!
Therefore I expect the album on November 17th, although that clashes with One Direction and the week after is Olly Murs' album. I guess she could release the album the day after but I guess she'll just go up against One Direction and settle for a top 3 album.
... like a lot of her singles have done.
I think this definitely sounds like more of a hit single than most of hers.
Posted by: -Jay- Oct 1 2014, 01:55 PM
I think her singles have all been amongst he most single-worthy from her albums tbh! None of them seem to me like they should have been left as album tracks, even 'The Flood' is one of the more hit-sounding potentials from 'Messy...'. The choices from '3 Words' were spot on, no matter what the '3 Words' single haters say. tongue.gif
Only 2 singles from the past two albums meant there were some tracks left behind which should have been singles too. sad.gif I definitely think 'Yeah Yeah' was one of her biggest missed opportunities.
Posted by: Liаm Oct 1 2014, 02:26 PM
I really really like this on first listen! It's quite well produced and polished which is great given how Crazy Stupid Love sounded. It's very catchy and anthemic too, I was singing along by the end!
'Yeah Yeah' is always on the radio at work though so it's still getting more promo than 'The Flood' ever did. kink.gif
I love it. The production reminds me of a Kylie song.
I'm really liking the artwork for this era too, hopefully Cheryl has a great album cover too.
Posted by: •CDC• Oct 1 2014, 06:41 PM
I think this is very Ace of Base (minus the reggae influences)! Not sure of how I feel about it at the moment, nothing this era has made an initial Impression on me thus far as opposed to all three previous Pre-album singles in previous era's. As much as I love Crazy Stupid Love now, I disliked it for quite a while; I'm sure this'll grow. smile.gif
EDIT: I know who this reminds me of now... WHIGFIELD! Anyone remember her? laugh.gif
Posted by: Jimmie Oct 1 2014, 06:52 PM
Absolutely love it wub.gif It definitely has a more instant feeling on the first hearing than Crazy Stupid Love. I am hooked already and have had it on repeat for the majority of the day already!
Gives me 'Kiss The Stars' vibes! (But better)
I'm really getting into it now. It's taken like 5 plays to hit me, but it's very good. Still sounds unfinished to me though (like how 'California Gurls' does to me) so those people saying how it sounds "polished" I don't get that at all. sad.gif But apart from that, as I say I am liking it! Can see it growing on me over time though!
Posted by: -Jay- Oct 1 2014, 10:12 PM
When you say unfinished, what do you think is missing? Another layer to the instrumental, more lyrics? I think some songs really benefit from not having an "everything but the kitchen sink" approach. Sometimes more simplistic is more effective! To me this song is actually quite full sounding and yes, polished! ohmy.gif Elements of it make me think it could be a Kylie track, particularly the verses & middle 8. Overall it's a step up from the instrumental to 'Crazy Stupid Love' anyway. biggrin.gif
Pixie Lott vibes - two #1s in a row, like Pixie managed in 2009? ohmy.gif kink.gif
Posted by: Kärenfanghoney Oct 2 2014, 12:21 AM
What a wasted opportunity. That absolutely undeniable intro and career-best shimmering verses...only to lead into that utter nothing of a chorus.
Posted by: Noahspike Oct 2 2014, 01:00 AM
Pretty catchy but also so damn basic, like the majority of her output drama.gif. The vocals in the chorus (as well as the chorus in general) are so grating. That said, it'll probably grow on me and it's better than 'Crazy Stupid Love' at least.
Oh I agree. Simplicity is definitely a good thing for a pop song, but this is just a bit too simple for me to get fully on board with I think. I do like the song and I don't like talking negative about something I like, but there is something a bit too basic on this, to prevent me from completely loving it as much as I most certainly should be. I felt the same way with 'California Gurls' as I do with this. I can see a lot of the appeal and get why most people love them, but for me something is just missing and they don't feel as wholesome as they could be.
But anyway, it IS catchy and it is growing on me the more I listen to it.
Posted by: Juranamo Oct 2 2014, 09:33 AM
I actually dislike this on first listen, quite a bit. sad.gif Maybe next time I hear it will be different, but for now it just sounds like a dull b-side. It's said the be a 'fun' song, which I don't understand because she sounds bored. Was considering switching it off after 1 minute... sad.gif
Shame, as I like most of her singles!
What a horrendous chorus ohmy.gif Agreed with comments that the song is largely pretty good up until then, but the chorus lets it down completely. This era really is not shaping up - when a Cheryl lead single is bad I can't say that's a good sign for the album.
I'm very underwhelmed. It needs a really kick ass video.
Posted by: Noahspike Oct 2 2014, 04:22 PM
^ It just really shows up the limitations of her voice. She sounds very strained on it and that's in the studio version! It's an underwhelming chorus in itself compared to the verses but it would undoubtedly sound much better with a vocalist who had the required range.
Ok so Cheryl kindly let us know that the video will be coming soon to her VEVO.
I like I Don't Care, I agree it is a bit basic, but it's good enough for me to forget Crazy Stupid Love happened. I don't think her vocals sound great on the chorus though. Fight For This Love, Parachute and Call My Name really suited her vocals. The verses are great.
Posted by: Sean. Oct 3 2014, 11:03 AM
Getting Nicole Scherzinger vibes from the video...
Posted by: mr_aly Oct 3 2014, 11:23 AM
So am I, and dare I say it... Tulisa vibes. Her mannerisms are so offputting!
However, still liking the song a lot.
Posted by: Cremey Oct 3 2014, 11:38 AM
Haaaa at the 'zero f***s given' part.
I actually love her mannerisms! Looks like she genuinely had fun filming it.
Posted by: jark Oct 3 2014, 11:51 AM
I don't want my popstars to look like they turned up on the beach for their video shoot and pranced around with their mates. I want them to serve face! It's a terrible video, the song needed something bright and bouncy, not beige and middle aged mum fierceness-y.
Posted by: Joe. Oct 3 2014, 11:58 AM
CSL = Better video
IDC = Better song.
It's kind of similar to Somebody to You, Your Love and Lay Me Down. Nothing special.
Posted by: AdamAloud Oct 3 2014, 12:27 PM
I like her mannerisms but it's a bit of an overkill with them being in every shot! I feel like there could've been something else added to one scene, a dance routine is the obvious choice.
She looks stunning though, really loving her hair at the moment!
Posted by: Hayzayy Oct 3 2014, 12:41 PM
I'm in love all over again wub.gif
And I love the crazy face expressions, it makes it look like a classic Girls Aloud video laugh.gif
Posted by: Noahspike Oct 3 2014, 12:44 PM
Her expressions/mannerisms make that video. I really like it.
Posted by: Davidson Oct 3 2014, 01:47 PM
Well, I really like it! The video has an uplifting quality to it, and she really looks like she's enjoying herself. I enjoy her mannerisms and facial expressions. It's a nice video visually, lovely scenery! Overall it's a nice change for her, she hasn't done a video similar to this before.
This. For a long time she has gone with the beauty icon/cold femme fatale look in her videos, and she's extremely good at it, but this one is much more lively and "human" (she's "only humain" after all kink.gif ), so yay for this !
I wish we had more close up shots from her on that moutnain though, I love her black outfits there but we barely see it.
Posted by: JosephStyles Oct 3 2014, 02:27 PM
I think Crazy Stupid Love has the better video of the two but I don't think this is bad by any means, shocked that it's had such a negative reception here! ohmy.gif It's just a lot of fun, she seems to be really enjoying herself this era, the mannerisms and facial expressions just helped show that for me. Not the *best* video ever but Jay's right, it's different for her and I think it works well for the song.
Great great track by Cheryl
Posted by: London81 Oct 3 2014, 04:44 PM
I've listened to this a few times now and love it. I liked CSL but not as much as her other leading singles whereas this is back up there. She defo saved the best single for second, taking the girls aloud release strategy. Brilliant - roll on the performance.
Posted by: Insomnio Oct 3 2014, 05:33 PM
I just heard it today! It's very catchy and it's already one of my favourite songs this year!! Much better than "Crazy Stupid Love".
Posted by: T child Oct 3 2014, 05:43 PM
This would be amazing if someone else sang it. She's flatter than a pancake.
Also, how is it possible to sound out of tune on record?
Posted by: !Khimaros! Oct 3 2014, 05:56 PM
It sounds pretty awful :/ .
I knew it would form the cringey photoshoots, promo and title.
Listening to this and then Paloma's new one right after showcases the difference in quality.
Posted by: Regina Oct 3 2014, 06:02 PM
This would be better if she actually had a decent voice, it's painful to listen to that chorus. Also, the swearing seems so stuck in as if to show "lol look at me, I can
swear, I am so badass"
I think her voice really suits the verses actually, but I do agree that even with production she sounds like she is struggling with the big notes. It's the best song for her voice, as I said. Hopefully she will mime with performances, we don't want another Gary Barlow duet situation...
Posted by: Hayzayy Oct 4 2014, 10:05 AM
Brought forward? Oooh, exciting !
Posted by: ROBOT Oct 5 2014, 10:56 AM
Hmmm, it's decent but I have to echo the chorus complaints. In one sense, the chorus does it's job because I heard it 10 minutes ago and could still sing it to you, so it's effective in that manner. However, I do find it pretty weak, annoying and brattish lyrically, strained vocally and all those comments about the polished production seem odd to me because I was specifically thinking the opposite.
I don't really find it all that interesting either. I hated the saxophones of CSL initially but there was something so infectious about it, I kept having to go back, don't really get that with this even though it should be a better song.
Posted by: ✖ ketalina ✖ Oct 5 2014, 11:00 AM
i think the problem is here that she cannot sing a LICK.
I am really liking this wub.gif
The only thing that gets to me is the abrupt swearing (which shouldn't be an issue given half the songs on my iTunes are explicit lol, but it doesn't work as well here). The verses, particularly the first, more than make up for it though and I'm sure I'll grow to love the chorus eventually too.
Good going and a LEAGUE ahead of CSL.
Posted by: Lukuzz Oct 5 2014, 01:11 PM
It's growing on me very fast, million times better and catchier than CSL. Her vocals aren't great but that's not a surprise really is it? Not like she's going to perform it live!
Posted by: sajjadali Oct 5 2014, 01:51 PM
It was instant for me. It's brilliant full stop. Amazing video. Relates to her perfectly pulls it off. Potential 5th No.1 single. XF performance will be brilliant. Like it alot one of her best singles.
Posted by: Hayzayy Oct 11 2014, 02:00 AM
Am I the only one thinking this could become the most iconic Cheryl song ever, after FFTL?
It's so catchy and instant, and there's something about it that makes it like a classic Cheryl song.
Posted by: Joe. Oct 11 2014, 09:53 AM
What's the opposite of a song growing on you? That's what this song has done to me. I thought it was good at first but her voice just doesn't sound suited to it.
Only Human is perfect though wub.gif
Posted by: Hayzayy Oct 11 2014, 12:04 PM
Ed Sheeran might get to #1 next week but no way will he stop Cheryl from getting there. I don't think Calvin Harris has a single out in the same week as Cheryl, unless he's doing an OA/OS release? Either way I don't see him denting Cheryl's chances of scoring another #1.
Anyway, if 'Crazy Stupid Love' can get to #1 with stiff competition, then I see no reason why 'I Don't Care' couldn't do it either.
CSL did much better on pre-orders though. This has X Factor exposure going for it but not too much else. Pre-orders are picking up nicely but still aren't massive, so I can see it being a #1 but not as big a seller as CSL.
I think CSL was massively boosted by its BGT performance though, that boosted it back into the top 100 and it never left after that. If this had that level of exposure so early on then I think it'd be a similar scenario. The X Factor will just provide that boost a bit later on I think.
Posted by: Umi Oct 21 2014, 02:26 PM
True, I guess it is a case of promotion appearing at different times! I'm not entirely convinced on how big the X Factor boost will be, because of the general idea that the boosts it gives aren't as big as they once were, but it'll obviously be a factor to at least some degree. I just hope airplay picks up a bit more, I'm surprised how little it's gotten so far given how radio-friendly it is.
On another note, I'm warming to the song quite a bit. The chorus I still think lets it down but rather than making it a bad song it just makes a good song that bit less great.
Posted by: -Jay- Oct 21 2014, 02:49 PM
Cheryl's performance could have the kind of impact we can't quite anticipate at the moment. It'll be her first X Factor performance in 4 years, and once the performance is announced I'm sure there's going to be a lot of hype in the run up to it! I think the appeal of a "Cheryl X Factor performance" is going to be somewhat higher than those who have performed so far!
I'm quite confident that the song will be a #1, but I have no idea about first week sales/overall sales, we shall see.
Cheryl's performance could have the kind of impact we can't quite anticipate at the moment. It'll be her first X Factor performance in 4 years, and once the performance is announced I'm sure there's going to be a lot of hype in the run up to it! I think the appeal of a "Cheryl X Factor performance" is going to be somewhat higher than those who have performed so far!
I'm quite confident that the song will be a #1, but I have no idea about first week sales/overall sales, we shall see.
The performance will be talked about a lot which will give it a big boost.
It'll be either the:
I can't believe she's miming, why doesn't she sing live boost, or
Ew, Cheryl sounds terrible and should mine , boost.
Twitter will be brutal and she won't win either way, but I agree with Jay that it'll probably draw in a great deal of hype.
I wouldn't say that #161 is all that low? It could certainly be worse than being within the Top 200. We really should wait and see what impact her performance provides. Her previous singles performed on The X Factor reached #1 on iTunes before she even performed them! Let's not lose faith a week before it's necessary. tongue.gif
Posted by: Umi Oct 27 2014, 12:00 AM
The thing is: though the pre-order is very low, the competition just isn't there. Nothing is beating her, so it's basically "can she beat Ed Sheeran?". Not an easy question to answer.
Posted by: DonaldDuck Oct 27 2014, 12:03 AM
Ed has had a massive increase following his x-factor performance! He's climbed over 40% in just over three and a half ours.
The competition is low but still, it doesn't mean the song has enough power to reach the top. Maybe it will only land in the top 5 or something.
I mean, everyone takes the number 1 as granted with Cheryl, but it's not that easy when even bands like One Direction don't make number 1 with their comeback song.
Ed could be on course for over 100k this week, and he will probably do the same next week or more.
Posted by: Joe. Oct 27 2014, 10:04 AM
If Ed can jump to number 1 with his X-Factor performance with a song that's been out and charting for ages from an album loads of people have, I can't see Cheryl doing any worse. I have a feeling it will have like 2 weeks in the top 10 though overall.
Posted by: mr_aly Oct 27 2014, 12:36 PM
I have to be honest, I have really gone off this song. sad.gif
It's a well produced track that I now agree with others is ruined by the chorus. If that was stronger and didn't seem so try hard it'd be a potentially perfect pop song.
Posted by: Sean. Oct 29 2014, 08:32 AM
This has surprisingly really grown on me. I think the chorus is probably what makes it catchy for me...still not a fan of the Scherzinger inspired video though, mind you.
I think all instant grats chart officially now but only the individual sales, the ones that are the result of the album pre-order don't count. There's no way to tell how many of the sales that show on itunes are individual and how many are because of people pre-ordering the album though.
IDC is #3 combined, #5 and #30.
Posted by: Umi Oct 31 2014, 02:47 PM
#3 combined is pretty good for Ireland. X Factor will only help her stabilise and a top 3 hit for a UK act in Ireland is generally indicative of a UK #1 contender.
Posted by: -Jay- Oct 31 2014, 04:22 PM
Yeah Top 3 is good for Ireland. Although her previous UK #1s also reached #1 in there!
You know what? Without promo it's pretty good and I'm 100% sure that everything will boost after X Factor performance.
Posted by: Hayzayy Nov 1 2014, 04:01 PM
"I don't care" very close to #2 combine on Irish iTunes. If it wasn't for Ed Sheeran she would have a shot at #1 over there.
The X Factor could impact their charts as well though.
For tonight's performance I really hope she steps up the game. She NEEDS to use "Only human" somehow, as an intro or something. The impact would be huge.
Unless she performs "Only human" later in the series but I don't think that's planned.
I do find it so frustrating that Cheryl judges on a talent show and she mimes. The performance was well staged, she looked fantastic but miming makes it very hard for me to buy into her solo music.
Posted by: CherylStyles Nov 2 2014, 10:19 PM
You're welcome to your own opinion of course, but why do you find it difficult to buy into her solo music if she mimes? Not as if it's not her singing on the actual track kink.gif It's more so that she can have the full performance - good vocals AND good dancing. She'd be compromising one aspect for the other if she didn't mime.
Posted by: Joe. Nov 2 2014, 10:33 PM
I'm Cheryl's defence I've noticed that when she judges she seems to focus more on stage presence than vocal ability.
But I'm annoyed she didn't record a more convincing backing track. It sounded exactly the same as the studio version.
Posted by: Timmy SZN Nov 2 2014, 10:38 PM
I have no problem with her miming because she usually WORKS that stage, but she didn't this time in the slightest..
I'm not sure what the think of the performance. I can't compare it to "Crazy Stupid Love"'s Britain's Got Talent one as I didn't see it and YouTube refuses to let me but in comparison to the début performances of her three lead singles on The X Factor and The Voice UK, it was a bit of a disappointment. The staging was very minimalistic and really felt like it could have come from a contestant. A shame because I'm loving the song more than ever but I'm pleased it's made an impact regardless.
Maybe find a dance routine that suited her to sing and dance?. There is/has been contestants on x factor that have put on great performances in the dance department and have also sang live. I think my issue is she sits on a judging panel that judges singers and Cheryl isnt shy to point out if someone is off point vocally etc but she takes to the stage and mimes. I have seen these comments on a few other sites and i have to agree with them if you judge on a singing competition the least you can do is take to the stage and show them how its done, also all the other guest performers sing live so i dont see why everytime she has done the show she mimes.
Posted by: Hayzayy Nov 3 2014, 10:14 AM
How is everyone so sure she mimed the whole thing? It sure wasn't the studio track and the vocals sounded very "live" and a lot less auto-tuned as usual. Can anyone actually point me one single moment in the performance where her mouth isn't in phase with the lyrics or something?
If she really mimed all of that then she made a pretty great job of it really :lol
Posted by: J▼hnkm Nov 3 2014, 10:28 AM
I have no issue whatsoever with an act miming on stage, even the best do it, it's just for a judge on a singing show to then so openly and unashamedly mime doesn't sit very well with me. We all know she can't sing, and at best she's an average dancer, so there's no sense of compromising one or the other. She can't do both, she can only do ONE competently at best. It doesn't even impact my enjoyment of her as an artist/her music (granted, I'm not overly keen on either), but it just feels more than a tad disingenuous and a bit of a slap in the face of the contestants who she lambasts for not being able to sing live, when she can't/won't do it either.
It was LITERALLY the studio version. Listen to the first bleeped out 'f***ing'. It's quite obviously just been bleeped out on the audio track. She has always mimed on X Factor, but at least before she mimed to an 'as live' version to at least give the illusion of it being live, but that was nothing more than clicking 'play' on iTunes and popping out on stage.
I agree, and if it were live she would have been a lot more breathy, because she was moving around a lot. She was even breathy speaking to DO'L at the end, so it was quite unrealistic.
I do disagree about her being an average dancer though, I think she's quite a strong dancer.
It is a bit of a broken record to hear people saying that, but she really can't sing. She's a very good pop-star with great presence and is usually a good performer and a great dancer. Her voice also sounds good on a record a lot of the time and she's had some great pop songs in and out of Girls Aloud, but she's never been a good vocalist, and those "in session" things, if they're meant to be 'good' for her, only prove that, because she doesn't sound great at all.
She can win. She can give people no basis to criticise her if she releases and performs songs she can actually manage vocally or else pulls out spectacular performances with high-energy dance routines while miming (- of course there'll always be some detractors, as there are for every artist, but their numbers would be significantly reduced). Until then, why should she be entitled to 'win'? She's a professional singer - the 'can't win' angle wouldn't hold up with anyone else who regularly displays incompetence in their job and often resorts to trickery!
I've seen her sing well live before and I've also seen her put on a great show with a very impressive dance routine where her miming was (more) justified. Yesterday she did neither IMO so there's no reason she should get off scot free.
You can't expect everyone to ignore the fact she has to mime on a talent show in which she doles out vocal advice/critique or ignore the fact she can't hit the notes of songs she chooses to promote and instead embrace her for her severe vocal limitations and marvel in how fierce she looked etc!
Posted by: Rabbit Froot Nov 3 2014, 12:28 PM
Basically what Noah and Joe have just said sums up exactly what I believe.
Posted by: AdamAloud Nov 3 2014, 12:45 PM
I very rarely hear Cheryl give critique on a contestant's vocal abilities though. She will always prefer to comment on the performance side of things, of which she excels at as a popstar and has every right to offer her opinion on, after going through the process herself and carving out a very successful 12 year career.
And all this talk that she can't sing is so f***ing boring. She CAN sing. Yes she's no bloody Adele but for the style of music she does, she can hold a tune for god's sake. If she'd have sang live you'd all be moaning at how 'bad' she is, basically because a lot of you just don't like her (so it seems completely redundant to me for the select few of you to keep going on and on about it!). Simon and Louis can't sing, but no one seems to be kicking off at them judging talent. [/rantover]
Posted by: -Jay- Nov 3 2014, 02:13 PM
People's definition of "can't sing" these days is "can't sing amazingly well". People can't seem to recognise when a voice is just average or even weak sounding, but is actually by and large in tune.
Anyway, roll on the next single when the exact same comments get dragged out yet again. kink.gif
I don't even mind if people didn't enjoy her performance but these topics become a bit "Groundhog day"-esque. I don't think she'll change, so I just find it futile that people keep wanting her to be better than she is - it seems she doesn't need to be. If that is unappealing or even abhorrent to someone then I'd have thought that it's best for them to look away and focus on an artist who lives up to their expectations?
Posted by: Carlos V Nov 3 2014, 02:13 PM
So your problem is basically that she's a jugde in a competition that aims to create popstars? Isn't that what she is? I rarely see her commenting on other people's voices.
That's why the same people criticized her during the A Million Lights era when she wasn't judging anyone?
Posted by: J▼hnkm Nov 3 2014, 03:13 PM
My definition of can't sing is someone who struggles to hit notes and struggles to remain in tune for the duration of a song. I bloody LOVE Katy Perry (just using an example here), but she really is a bad singer. She is occasionally on point, but it's so rare that it might as well be never. Yet she sings live. It's a mess, but she does it. I would rather she sang live and did it terribly and at least be honest, OR as has been said, she did such a high energy dance routine that it seemed like 'ok, yeah, she didn't sing live because she couldn't'. This just seems like she couldn't BE BOTHERED, which is one thing I cannot tolerate in a popstar, disdain for or taking the privilege for granted.
And perhaps the reason these topics are cyclical in nature is not just because we are all hating on poor Cherly, but perhaps it's because the criticisms are accurate and justified.
Agree completely with John.
Is a forum in which mediocrity is routinely accepted and celebrated really what mods want? Should people be discouraged from giving their honest opinions just because it's Cheryl and everyone knows she's not the most talented? From my experience, a series of glowing reviews, superlatives and gifs for objectively average performances gets even more tiresome, boring and 'Groundhog Day' than this topic.
Posted by: AdamAloud Nov 3 2014, 03:41 PM
It's clearly an issue that has divided people and naturally, Cheryl's fans are going to defend her, especially in her own forum. However, not one of the mods here has discouraged people from posting their opinions and I can confidently speak for all 3 of us that we never will.
Posted by: Joe. Nov 3 2014, 03:52 PM
I've followed Cheryl and been a fan since Popstars: The Rivals. I did say after the performance, that while it was clearly mimed it sold the song well and I enjoyed it on the whole. I enjoy Cheryl as a popstar, most of the time - despite the two newest singles not being to my taste. But overall I think she has the star power that loads of incredible vocalists only wish they had. I also defended the fact that she doesn't often comment on people's vocals on the X-Factor, which is true, because it's Cheryl's incredibly intriguing presence that sells her records.
But I do think there is an element of delusion when people claim that she can sing/isn't that bad, because I believe Cheryl is one of the worst live vocalists in mainstream pop at the moment. I have never heard her sing a song live from start to finish with no wobbles, cracks or flat-lining. But saying that, I actually don't care if she mimes, wasn't The Voice mimed? That's one of my all time favourite TV performances.
I agree, I think it's unfair to claim that us mods are discouraging opinions being posted, a debate can't be a bad thing. I just think it's kinda ridiculous that people say she can't sing - she can, but she just has quite a limited range. People like Britney, Kylie, etc. don't have particularly strong voices but they can sing also. It's one thing to be disappointed at her miming - that's fair enough and people are welcome to their own opinion, but saying she can't sing at all is a bit ridiculous. You don't get 8 #1s, coming for a 9th, over a 12 year period without some kind of vocal talent. It's strange cause the British public themselves voted for her to be in Girls Aloud, and she received more votes than any of the other girls, even Nadine.
Posted by: -Jay- Nov 3 2014, 04:23 PM
Yeh, mods aren't discouraging anyone from giving their honest opinions. We're not censoring anyone or editing posts! That's not to say that us mods can't disagree with the opinions and state our own honest opinions, and mine happens to be that I find it all a bit tiresome, but I'm not saying "I forbid anyone from saying anything bad about Cheryl".
I've been a fan of Cheryl from the beginning, believe me when I say that over 12 years I've had so many people basically tell me "how can you like Girls Aloud/Cheryl, they're/she's shit, they/she can't sing, you have such bad taste" and that wears a bit thin. It's like a lot people can't tolerate that other people happen to like her and enjoy her as a popstar, and seem to be on a mission to tell you that she's awful and that you should really think that she's awful too.
I do speak in general terms in this post, because I appreciate that everyone is being respectful here, and it's in no way personal. We just have differing opinions and it's highly unlikely that we can change the view of another. So let's just respectfully agree to disagree. We all have different tastes and expectations in what we want/enjoy in a popstar, after all. For me, I like variety. Some of the most celebrated singers in the world are amongst my favourites, but I do have a penchant for pop stars like Geri Halliwell, Cheryl, The Saturdays and others of that ilk. I can recognize that they're not the most talented of singers but I do see something special in them, they appeal to me.
Posted by: J▼hnkm Nov 3 2014, 04:38 PM
Vocal talent =/= success. Cheryl being a successful and charismatic popstar really has little to do with her voice. It's been down to fantastic song (as part of GA and a few solo), great marketing/packaging, great timing, lots of things. None of them to be overlooked, but all far more important in making her the chart force she is than vocals.
It's like early Madonna, she was a terrible live singer and not exactly amazing on record, yet became the biggest female star on the planet. Being a popstar is so much about the 'X' factor and whilst I personally don't see it in Cheryl, I'm sure that is what has contributed to her success and stature in the eyes of a great many people far more than her vocals.
Posted by: CherylStyles Nov 3 2014, 04:43 PM
Oh I totally agree that she has the "full package" - looks, great songs, personality, good management, etc. but I don't think they mean her voice counts for nothing. At the end of the day, if she couldn't sing, she wouldn't be as popular as she is now I'm sure. As said already, the public voted for her best on her vocals 12 years ago to make it into GA!
Ok, maybe not nothing, but it's probably near the bottom of the list. And also, let's remember that KIMBERLEY WALSH also ended up in GA and she's also lacking in much vocal ability.
Posted by: CherylStyles Nov 3 2014, 05:38 PM
Kimberley who? kink.gif
Yeah both Cheryl and Kimberley aren't the strongest vocalists but they can both hold a note. Sarah's the one who struggles to sing in tune heehee.gif
NEVER FORGET wub.gif
Sarah can be unpredictable but I think she's got more range than Kimberley and Cheryl. She's done some fantastic live 'Heeeeere I aaaaaam's in her time. I don't think Kimbelrey or Cheryl could ever.
I agree, I think it's unfair to claim that us mods are discouraging opinions being posted, a debate can't be a bad thing. I just think it's kinda ridiculous that people say she can't sing - she can, but she just has quite a limited range. People like Britney, Kylie, etc. don't have particularly strong voices but they can sing also. It's one thing to be disappointed at her miming - that's fair enough and people are welcome to their own opinion, but saying she can't sing at all is a bit ridiculous. You don't get 8 #1s, coming for a 9th, over a 12 year period without some kind of vocal talent. It's strange cause the British public themselves voted for her to be in Girls Aloud, and she received more votes than any of the other girls, even Nadine.
Kylie is in a totally different league vocally to those others. She has a range of 3.5 octaves smoke.gif
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCwaYb16hNk
Cheryl cud neva. She can sing, but not well. Her voice is very limited and very thin.
As for the miming. I have no real problem with it, a lot of my favourite acts do it, hell, J-Lo always does it, but at least she does it convincingly and puts so much effort into her
dancing etc that its not a big deal. Cheryl's efforts are very half arsed and she didn't have that much of a big routine to pull off. She could at least have given it a go to sing at least
a bit of it live.
Posted by: pippa Nov 3 2014, 07:07 PM
Kylie is an excellent example for me to use now that she is mentioned. Kylie mimed in early days but miming was very common for shows such as Top of the Pops etc in those days. Once Kylie started singing live her vocal improved and improved, her live vocal in concerts and on shows is very good now. This leads to me Cheryl, obviously she can sing as she performed on pop stars the rivals each week and was voted into the pop stars the rivals by the public. That said, what she needs to do now is sing live more often, the more often she sings live the better she will get.
Many pop stars mime, i dont have a big issue with that on the promotional shows but not in concert, miming in concert is an insult. My big issue about her X Factor performance is miming in front of not just talent show contestants but contestants she is mentoring each week to go out and give a blinding live performance in front of millions only for her to go on the exact same stage and mime. Surely even the biggest Cheryl fan can see there is a huge element of hypocrisy in that.
I don't think that's accurate (other than the final), out of 4 appearances during Popstars, she almost got eliminated twice. Not knowing the exact figures, but guessing from who was safe each week, I think Nadine, Nicola, and probably Sarah and Javine got more votes through the whole competition. Also, we all know that people don't only vote on talent - looks, personality, sympathy or even someone coming from the same area could earn votes, which is fair enough, these things also come into play outside thses TV shows.
In case anyone was wondering, I think the public got it right in this particular occasion smile.gif
I love the song, I love the performance, I love it all with Cheryl. As a fan it comes as no surprise to me that she may have most probably mimed. #idon'tcare... I'd much rather watch Cheryl in concert than some boring other stood in the centre of the stage belting out tunes as I fall asleep. I buy into Cheryl as a product and I unashamedly admit that. I'll go see her in concert again, I'll keep buying her music and I'll love every minute of it.
I agree so much with this post biggrin.gif
I knew that, maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. (And I promise I won't drag this on any longer after this.)
My point was, just because she was #1 in the final, she wasn't necessarily the most popular one from day 1. Just two weeks earlier, she ranked #6 out of 7 (very narrowly beating Aimee), and two weeks before that, she was #3 out of 4. Not that it matters too much now, and she obviously became the most popular quite soon after the programme (maybe not immediately, but soon). And although she wouldn't have been my first choice, I don't mind the way things turned out, she's clearly very good at being popular (which is much more than being just likeable).
Posted by: CherylStyles Nov 4 2014, 09:34 AM
Oh I never said she was the most popular overall, I referred to the final only, sorry if that wasn't clear.
Posted by: CherylStyles Nov 4 2014, 03:09 PM
So as of the Tuesday midweeks, she's only 6k ahead? unsure.gif Wondering if there's an error in the mids there at all as surely she'd be waaaay higher if she pushed Ed right down to ~0.6?
Posted by: Joe. Nov 4 2014, 03:17 PM
I reckon they haven't counted either the Clean or more likely the explicit version. A similar thing happened with The Vamps in their first midweek a couple of weeks ago. I can't see that being correct.
Posted by: CherylStyles Nov 4 2014, 03:18 PM
Oh yes, I'd forgotten that! Oh Cecilia was outside the top 30 in the first midweek laugh.gif
Posted by: Hayzayy Nov 4 2014, 03:59 PM
Yes I don't want to worry too much and everything in this update would indicate that they didn't count the explicit version.
Posted by: Umi Nov 4 2014, 04:05 PM
If it's a real update then she'll need some kind of miracle to get the #1, but if it's not then things look OK. I would have expected the top version to outsell Ed by more than that but she does have the clean version and who knows if the EP is counted, etc.
Posted by: -Jay- Nov 4 2014, 06:03 PM
I definitely think something hasn't been counted, I can't believe that a) it's so close and b) the sales are that low.
Posted by: Joe. Nov 5 2014, 03:44 PM
There you go! happy.gif
Posted by: ROBOT Nov 5 2014, 06:25 PM
Okay, I hadn't seen it but having watched that (sorry to bring it up again!), she really doesn't even do that much dancing, it's mostly just walking. I actually don't agree that she can't sing, so therefore, I'm sure she could've put in a competent vocal and actually show she CAN do it whilst putting on that exact same performance.
Posted by: mr_aly Nov 5 2014, 06:42 PM
Exactly! The thing I also don't get with her (and Britney as well) is that their voices wouldn't exactly be hard to replicate live either, so why do they do it?
Posted by: -Jay- Nov 5 2014, 07:03 PM
Maybe it's a confidence issue? Particularly with Britney.
Posted by: mr_aly Nov 5 2014, 09:47 PM
If it's a confidence issue wouldn't they have the resources available to try and overcome it?
Posted by: Joe. Nov 5 2014, 10:04 PM
She sang live on pop stars the rivals for weeks on her own though. Then years with Girls Aloud. I think it's because she knows she'd be pitchy and wants to make sure the song is sold properly. It might not even have been her choice.
Posted by: London81 Nov 5 2014, 11:31 PM
How do we know she's miming anyway? I really think the verses sound quite different to the studio version.
Posted by: CherylStyles Nov 5 2014, 11:33 PM
I agree that it sounds different but the vocals could easily have been pre-recorded, that's what she normally does I think. Brian Friedman's denied that she mimed but I still think she did. Not phased either way though.
Posted by: London81 Nov 5 2014, 11:39 PM
Neither am I phased. I've been a britney fan for 15+ years so miming really doesn't bother me. I just don't agree with what people are saying about it sounding exactly like the studio version. It's quite different
Posted by: Hayzayy Nov 6 2014, 08:24 AM
Brian Friedman is not the kind to go on Twitter and lie about it if it's not true.
All these years working for Britney, he never did such a thing so I don't see why he would lie for Cheryl just for this performance. He could have as well just said nothing about it.
Posted by: AdamAloud Nov 6 2014, 01:30 PM
The 16.4k lead includes Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday...
I think the verses we're live but the chorus seemed mimed but to be honest if I was in her position I'd do exactly the same!
I agree with this completely. And I'm not just being a naive fan. I fully admit when my fav act is miming but I so to think that's the case this time, especially with the verses.
Posted by: -Jay- Nov 7 2014, 01:37 AM
I'd be surprised if Ed overcame that lead.
Posted by: Hayzayy Nov 7 2014, 08:17 AM
Cheryl is 85,3% on Ed on iTunes at the moment, which means that when Ed is selling around 10k a day, she is selling 8,5k. Plus Ed must do around 2,5k a day on streaming and Cheryl around 500, so basically Ed is gaining around 3,5k on Cheryl everyday, and Saturday I'm not sure what could happen as I guess sales are bigger on that day than on casual week days.
It shouldn't be enough to overtake her but he's going to get pretty close, there could be less than 5k between them both at the end of the week ohmy.gif
Posted by: -Jay- Nov 7 2014, 03:15 PM
Gap - Wednesday mids - 17,600+
Gap - Thursday mids - 16,370+
Gap - Friday mids - 14,900 (although there is some Spotify data missing).
I'm pretty confident that Cheryl will still be #1 for Sunday, it's a large gap for Ed to overcome and he hasn't made huge daily gains against her so far this week.
Posted by: -Jay- Nov 7 2014, 08:57 PM
Any predictions for Cheryl's first week sales with 'I Don't Care' and 'Only Human'? happy.gif
Posted by: AdamAloud Nov 7 2014, 09:02 PM
I'm gonna say 80k for 'I Don't Care' and 35k for 'Only Human'.
Posted by: Umi Nov 7 2014, 09:14 PM
Agreed with Adam on both fronts. 80k seems solid for IDC and I was hoping for 45k+ for the album but pre-orders indicate 30-35k I imagine.
Posted by: Veis Nov 7 2014, 10:18 PM
Yeah, something around 80-85k for IDC, I would say 40k+ for OH.
Posted by: Ryan. Nov 7 2014, 11:03 PM
I'm 99.9% sure that Cheryl definitely mimed to a pre-recorded live vocal, it's something she's always done. I have no problem with her doing it, especially when's she doing a full-on dance routine, but Brian saying she didn't doesn't convince me otherwise.
it's an even more incredible feat that's she's achieved it with the material that she has. she's had decent to rather ropey songs go to #01. it'd be nice if she would release stronger, international type hits because otherwise she isn't going to have much of a legacy. what's does a record without a legacy?
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini may have won the British public over with last year's 'I Don't Care', but the song's writer is less impressed with how the track turned out.
Bonnie McKee wrote the song and gave it the title 'Waking Up Diagonal', but Cheryl's people made some changes once they got hold of it.
Speaking to Idolator, she said: "I wrote a song called 'I Don't Care', that's not what I called it actually. Cheryl Cole cut it and it went to number one in the UK last year.
"That was my 10th number one, so I'm grateful for it but I didn't want to give it up. It was a song I had written for myself. They tweaked a couple lyrics and changed the title.
"The original title was 'Waking Up Diagonal'. It's the first line of the song. I just thought it was more interesting than 'I Don't Care', which is such a boring title to me. When I hear that song it breaks my heart a little bit because it's my story."
McKee referred to the song again when asked if she has a least favourite song that she has written, saying that 'I Don't Care' didn't turn out the way it was supposed to.
"I mean the Cheryl Cole song was great, they did a good job with it, but it just wasn't the way I would do it. It really makes my skin crawl. I'm just like, 'This isn't how it's supposed to be'," she said.
'I Don't Care' became Cheryl's fifth UK number one single as a solo artist, and helped her become the first British female solo artist to score five chart-toppers.
Must admit, I'm glad it ended up in Cheryl's hands, one of her best songs still for me!
Posted by: Liаm Jul 3 2015, 02:20 PM
The song would have been better with Bonnie's voice imo. It's not the most exciting song; it's a bit flat. I do like Cheryl's version but her voice really isn't that interesting or dynamic compared to Bonnie's although Lee is right, if it was that special you wouldn't give it away... Although it's just a fun carefree song, the lyrics aren't that complex or personal either so I'm not sure exactly how it'd be so personal, but a song meaning something to you is subjective I guess.
Posted by: Joe. Jul 3 2015, 02:34 PM
I think Bonnie's version would have been better, too. The main reason I didn't like 'I Don't Care' is because it seemed too far out of Cheryl's vocal range and you could almost hear a strain on the choruses. I thought it was odd to write that song for her with such difficult belters, but I didn't realise that wasn't the case - so it makes more sense now.
