Spurred on by Dandy's excellent countdown, I have been inspired to do one of my own. This will very much be the less successful sequel that nobody really asked for but the powers that be made anyway and everyone will want to forget, but dammit you shall HAVE IT ANYWAY.
I'm going about it in a slightly different way, and indeed a slightly more comprehensive way to make it a little less predictable. I've been more than vocal about my love of certain songs on here over the years, so a straight list might be somewhat anticlimactic. This way I will review a number of different aspects of her career:
■ Top 40 Album Tracks
■ Top 40 Singles
■ Top 25 Demo/Unreleased tracks - Some demo versions of actual tracks, some left on the cutting room floor
■ Album In Review - A detailed review of each album, track by track
■ Top 10 Music Videos
■ Top 25 Live Performances
I haven't decided on an order for the above yet, but this is going to be at least a few months in the making as it's pretty darn comprehensive.
Ooh, very interesting indeed! Sounds like a lot of work but I've no doubt it'll work out perfectly. Looking forward to the Top 10 videos - some of my favourites aren't necessarily among my favourite songs ('Justify My Love' and 'American Life', for instance), so I'm sure there will be some surprises in store with yours, too.
Unless there's a top 5 soundtrack singles and a top 5 badconic movie cameos, I'm OUT.
It's not like you've ever been IN, bbz
This seems very exciting, can't wait to take part in whatever comes first
As soon as you reveal your ABBA top 13 (three years on and still waiting), I will tune into this *.*
I'm here for this. The incredibly self-depreciating description could not be more enticing.
Great idea! And ALREADY more interest than my thread. I shall try to let this pass though and just simmer bitterly on the sidelines.
ps guessing Hung Up will be about #17?
When is this starting because I am so excited for this tbh, the highlight is going to be albums in review
I too am very excited (and slightly nervous because i know you have some WILD opinions occasionally). Still, bring it on~
I'm still working on it tbh, so early next week. And Madonna is SACRED, so I'll try and treat this list with the same level of r-e-s-p-e-c-t.
Any idea when you'll be able to start, John? Looking forward to it!
Not letting John forget about this.
All good things come to those who wait.
(this week, I PROMISE)
Oh and let's not pretend you're BUSY.
#01 Did You Do It?
THE quintessential Madonna song. No 5 minutes in existence can sum her up better.
In all honesty I totally forgot about this, again. I unconsciously uncoupled myself with the idea, it would seem. I shall now consciously couple my hands to they keys of my laptop and attempt to finalise the lists. Just keep bumping this thread until I do it, only eventual humiliation and a spotlight being shone on my failings with make me do it.
Top 50 album tracks
01 Madonna
03 Like A Virgin
02 True Blue
01 Who's That Girl
03 Like A Prayer
03 I'm Breathless
03 Erotica
02 Bedtime Stories
02 Evita
02 Ray Of Light
04 Music
03 American Life
04 Confessions On A Dance Floor
04 Hard Candy
01 Celebration
05 MDNA
07 Rebel Heart
It's safe to say RECENCY has played a part in this, though Rebel Heart having three times as many tracks as Madonna (and twice as many as almost all the others) makes direct track number comparisons a little irrelevant.
Just missing out on this are 2 very different tracks:
I'm Going Bananas - batshit crazy and objectively awful but just SO MUCH FUN
Love Tried To Welcome Me - one of the few tracks on Bedtime Stories which understands that a good song usually features a melody and a hook, just a little too subtle to be much higher.
I feel like Wash All Over Me will rank fairly highly and rightfully so, signs that she still has that essential MADGE magic to her music.
'Love Tried To Welcome Me' is one of my favourites from Bedtime Stories - another great example of how Madonna just nails ballads, although the lack of usual raw vocals allows the emotion to come directly from the lyrics.
Seems strange to see 4 and 5 tracks from Hard Candy and MDNA given how you've made it clear they're bottom of the heap in terms of albums, but there's certainly plenty of gems dotted around on both albums.
Both of those albums are odd in that when she nails it, she totally nails it but when she gets it wrong it's career worst music. Same goes for Rebel Heart too.
Time goes by so slowly for those who wait..
Tired of waiting on you.
