3) UPPERMOST FT. VITA SCHMIDT – HOLD ME UP

Uppermost
2016: Hold Me Up
Vita Schmidt
2016: Hold Me Up

Back to dance, and to another relative unknown for #3 as Uppermost and Vita Schmidt land with summer smash (on my personals, anyway) Hold Me Up. The producer’s been active a while creating both instrumentals and remixes (notably, Halsey and Adele), but rarely ventures into vocal tracks, so the release of EP Impact in 2016 featuring four vocal tracks and four up-and-coming vocalists was a pretty pleasant surprise.

Not that I was a fan of the guy before coming across this track. For once, it wasn’t a Spotify algorithm-recommended one, but one I heard a friend, an even bigger music fan than me playing, and jumped on as a result. It’s the highest pure dance/club/EDM (what do we call that genre nowadays, honestly?) track on the countdown and notched up comfortably more plays throughout the year than Willow at #4, although also decidedly not enough to challenge either of the top 2. It’s a strong track with a few influences, a bit of a tropical sound in the verses, a bit of Major Lazer/Guetta circa 2015-16 influence, a cool-voiced female vocalist a little like an older Jasmine Thompson, and a solid drop-to-instrumental chorus hook – pretty much spot on for a 2016 dance hit. In theory, at least, as it never seemed to gain much traction, and the music video’s still barely breaking 60k views. Still, it was a track I really got in a big way during the year, and yay, I get to share it on now. I’d also recommend Uppermost’s track Talisman.

It's the end of April, and so just about high time to finish off the countdown for the previous year. Perhaps next year I'll do it sooner...although it has been fun looking back on 2016 as we go further into the year.

Top 2 both debuted early in the year, giving them the maximum time possible to build up a lead and a head of steam that ended up carrying them to the very top of the tree by year-end. Fittingly, of the two tracks, one I loved from the first listen, and the other I was very unsure of at first, before it moved past that to end up moving past nearly every other track I hammered in the plays this year.

After seeing a stunning resurgence and turnaround in fortunes this year, number #2 of my 2016 goes to....

Rihanna, again, and for the 10th and final time of 2016.

2) RIHANNA FT. DRAKE - WORK

The track's also Drake's highest position this year (sorry not sorry, One Dance).

Work clears Uppermost by a decent amount, although solidly helped by 6 more months to rack up the plays. Although I was initially mixed on it, the beat and instrumentation are infectious and Rihanna manages to inflect her vocals with confidence, sass, and pure unbridled joy. In a year where I worked a series of underwhelming and unappreciated jobs, the refrain of workworkworkworkwork was pretty appropriate for how I was feeling. I also think not being a previous Rihanna fan helped me not at all be disappointed by her new direction - I'm having a similar reaction to 2017 Katy Perry, as a non-fan of hers from the past too.

For all its charms, Work falls at the final hurdle to another strong, long-awaited comeback track, also with a great message that really resonates and energizes, keeping you going, and that track is the return of...

AlunaGeorge, also for the final time this countdown.

1) ALUNAGEORGE FT. POPCAAN - I'M IN CONTROL

This track is powerful and makes you feel powerful. No, it's not serious or about world issues or anything, but I'm not that much a serious person, not in my downtime anyway, and AlunaGeorge instead on this one went for a pretty universal message about confidence wrapped up in a euphoric party track.

I'm still baffled how the era didn't go better for them, between Aluna's stylish reinvention, the high-profile collaborators, on-trend sounds, and not bad promo and festival slots throughout the year. Still, I'm In Control did it for me, and as such lands firmly as 2016's top track, well clear of any chasers. It's also a great workout track, empowering. Full marks, ending up not only as my top track of the year, but my top AlunaGeorge track ever. Qween.

If you've made it this far, thanks loads for following along! I'm still a little staggered by how many views this has got. Quite a long piece when it's all put together! I've enjoyed doing it and will definitely be doing one for this year too. (Also I can finally change my signature now!)

I may or may not put a full list post up. In the meantime, questions, comments etc. welcomed, happy to chat on in the thread biggrin.gif

Great choice of #1! My favourite song from AlunaGeorge, a really catchy dance track that I have no idea why it didn't chart on my PC! When it eventually reached the UK Top 40 I was EXTATIC! music.gif music.gif
