Yes! Should be brilliant tonight, I like nearly everything here - as opposed to Semi 1 where I liked less than half of them.

Bloodbath on the way sad.gif It's a pity i can't yell when i am going to watch it as it's night time sad.gif

Here's my prediction

01. Azerbaijan
02. Armenia
03. Croatia
04. Turkey
05. Ireland
06. Israel
07. Sweden

09. Romania
10. Denmark

11. Georgia
12. Switzerland
13. Cyprus
14. The Netherlands
15. Lithuania
16. Bulgaria

This semi is much more predictable, there'a strict line between songs that are more likely to qualify and less likely to qualify.. well, not really a strict though, a couple are on the fence.

Posted by: SKOB 27th May 2010, 10:07 AM

Slovenia might be the worst entry ever... Although it's hard to tell

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Sweden, Israel and Turkey qualify for sure. I wish Switzerland qualifies since they have had decent entries recently.

Depending on how the performances go tonight though, Georgia could well oust Ukraine or Denmark. I still think they have the weakest ballad though, and they'll get forgotten about.

Looking back, I think we all did overestimate Slovakia a tad. Well, obviously we did because it didn't qualify, but I suppose if we had given it more thought, then we would have realised that it perhaps wasn't as much of a dead cert as we were saying. I mean, I predicted it to win their semi, but I didn't think it would even go top ten in the final - maybe even not top 15 - so my prediction of them winning their semi, in hindsight, was a little bizarre.

Croatia is different though - vocally very strong, sung near the end, three attractive women, sung before the sub-standard Georgian entry, more jury friendly, a great record in the semi finals (in 2007 and 2009 they qualified with pretty poor songs) and generally a better song anyway. I might actually cry if they don't make it as well tbh.

Posted by: Ghosty233 27th May 2010, 02:28 PM

Croatia will sail through. In my opinion, Israel will be this semi's "Slovakia", having said that I never saw anything much in Horehronie. Denmark could easily be a shock non-qualifier, and possibly Ireland. I'd say those are the three favourites that are looking a bit more uncertain than the other dead certs.

Anyway, I'm also stupidly excited for tonight! biggrin.gif

They're not even comparable. Slovakia seemed like the most 'different' option out of a terrible semi, hence us all overestimating it, but Croatia is a decent song in a decent semi with much more widespread contemporary appeal. I agree with David that we all overrated Slovakia, I think I put it down as 2nd in it's semi (rotf.gif) but I don't think anyone here's overrating Croatia. I'd be surprised if it fails to come top 5 in the semi tonight.

Ukraine/Georgia and Bulgaria over Sweden and Ireland? I'd bet my life on at least one of Sweden and Ireland qualifying, and am pretty sure both will qualify anyway...

Posted by: Aphrodite 27th May 2010, 04:09 PM

Im so nervous for Ireland tonight,i just pray we qualify. Again i thought the irish entry last year was great ( i still love the song and listen to it alot) and was sure we would qualify and we came 11th, i love Niamhs song aswell this year but im worried the been able to vote from the start of the show will go against Ireland.

Well the being able to vote from the start didn't badly effect Belarus or Iceland.......they performed last but still made it.

tbh whether Ireland comes 1st or 10th I don't really care right now.....just as long as we qualify tongue.gif

I still think they have the weakest ballad though, and they'll get forgotten about.

I agree on the song being quite weak, but performing second to last and being forgotten about? ohmy.gif

Israel will be this semi's "Slovakia"

Yes. With their running draw and the other songs in this semi, I can't see them coming above 9th tonight. Harel is pretty big in Israel, but I find the song weak, it's one I skip when I play the CD, and I probably won't have it in my top 10 tonight.

I think they're my choices for what I'd like to go through - I wouldn't be sad to lose the others from the final, and I don't want Sweden in the final just to teach them for not selection Manboy of Kom. I'd be backing them for a win if they'd chosen Kom!

I'd happily substitute Switzerland for Ireland, though, depending on the live performance.

OK, to get me in the mood (& ween me off listening to BBC Radio 6 Music) I will now youtube and review the five Final prequalifers (The Big Four + Last's Year's Winning Nation):

France: Jessy Matador "Allez Ola Olé"

Oooh, I swear I've heard this song for early coverage of the Football World Cup. A catchy calypso rap type track. It reminds me of the BaHa Men. But it is way too generic for my liking, even though it is clearly good. 6.5/10

Germany: Lena Meyer-Landrut "Satellite"

The German answer to Kate Nash releases a very quirky, but catchy melodic female pop tune. A huge hit all over Europe this is clearly going to do well in the contest. But the big negative for me is its hook is way to near (& not as good as the old soul classic) Jimmy Soul's - If You Wanna Be Happy For the Rest of Your Life. Altogether now when this plays: "If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life / Never make a pretty woman your wife / So from my personal point of view / Get an ugly girl to marry you ....." 7.0/10

Posted by: SKOB 27th May 2010, 06:41 PM

Allez Ola Ole is surprisingly good..French entries have been decent recently..

Having just listened to it (hadn't heard it before) I can't see an awful lot of resemblance myself unsure.gif

Sounds more like Rolling Dice, one of the tracks on Anna Bergendahl's album!

Posted by: thisispop 27th May 2010, 06:47 PM

Norway: Didrik Solli-Tangen "My Heart Is Yours"

Westlife ballad ahoy!!!! But thankfully it is not oversung nauseatingly by 4 "Oirsh-men" getting off their bloody stools at the last key change for the overdramatic Finale. Altogether now : "You raise me up so I can stand on mountains / You raise me up to walk on stormy seas ....." 7.5/10

Spain: Daniel Diges "Algo pequeńito"

Urrgggh, this is an awful tinkly waltz type ballad. Just about bareable watching some celebs dance to on Strictly Come Dancing. But having to actually listen to this .... Nope. 3.5/10

United Kingdom: Josh Dubovie "That Sounds Good to Me"

So Pete Waterman knows how to write an ESC winning hit does he? Josh does his best over a quite frankly forgettable track with a ghastly tepid production that makes this track sound like a rejected outtake from a Steps album. More like "That Sounds Bland To Me" ... and I hate bland. But hey who am I to argue with Pete Waterman? (After all when Daniel Pearce, who was arranger and co-writer of some of One True Voice's songs left the group in the summer of 2003 after a bust up with Pete Waterman over the choice of the Rick Astley penned 2nd single Shakespeare's (Way With) Words, Pete Waterman confidently predicted that Daniel Pearce would never become successful within the music industry. Shortly after, the band split up. Come Sunday night at 7PM I wonder who will look more stupid. Me thinks it wont be Daniel Pearce). 1.5/10

Wind machine lol

always reminds me of Carola, the queen of wind machines.

I've literally never seen a wind machine turned up so high as in Denmark's performance. I remember at MF last year it was pretty blowy and cold in the arena - lets just say that you could feel the wind machines at full blast there laugh.gif

05. Switzerland // Michael von der Heide "Il pleut de l'or"

Are they having problems on stage, as this is the third male vocallist on the bounce with "keying issues". This song is striving to be good. But ultimately its melody falls short to my ears. Plus the lead singer looks like a bloke out of Stars In Your Eyes who wants to be Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters) but is refusing to shave off his beard. 5.0/10

Is Anna struggling with a bit of a throat infection as she sounds a bit raspy in places (but at least she is in tune). A very good tune this hits 4th gear very quickly, but fails to find the Top (5th) Gear and land a knock out punch. 8.5/10

Ireland... this MUST qualify... clearly best ballad this year... and it has competition... with all the slow tunes...

a bit out of tune on the first "when i cry"
get it together girl!!!

Not being biased or anything, but I can see Ireland potentially winning this (although I'm probably wrong and this will go out in the semis)

Rooting for Denmark, Azerbaijan, Sweden, Romania, Ireland, Croatia and Georgia. Been a good semi on the whole, much stronger than the first although my favourite 3 songs are from the first semi.

Posted by: Ljósiđ 27th May 2010, 08:32 PM

So

01 Azerbaijan
02 Turkey
03 Croatia
04 Sweden
05 Georgia
06 Armenia
07 Ireland
08 Romania
09 Ukraine
10 Israel

11 Lithuania
12 Denmark
13 Bulgaria
14 The Netherlands
15 Cyprus
16 Switzerland
17 Slovenia

I reckon the following will qualify:

Ireland
Sweden
Armenia
Azerbaijan
Croatia
Romania
Netherlands*
Georgia*
Cyprus*
Ukraine*
Bulgaria*
Denmark
Turkey
------------------
Switzerland
Lithuania
Israel
Slovenia

Those 5 asterisked will get the last two places I reckon. I'll be pleased to see Switzerland qualify though! If Lithuania, Israel or Slovenia qualify I'll be fairly chagrined. If Ukraine, Cyprus, Georgia or Bulgaria qualify I won't be hugely pleased either.

Posted by: Aphrodite 27th May 2010, 08:34 PM

Tyron id would love if you are correct

Posted by: Addy! 27th May 2010, 08:36 PM

My top 10:

If they all qualify it will be perfect smile.gif

1- Azerbaijan
2- Croatia
3- Israel
4- Turkey
5- Bulgaria
6- Romania
7- Ireland
8- Denmark
9- Sweden
10- Armenia
-----------------------------------

Those 3 were amazing indeed and I'm quite sad that I had to leave them outside top 10...I could easily replace them with 3 songs from other semi.

Georgia
Cyprus
Lithuania
-----------------------------------
I really don't care about those 4, but somehow I feel that Netherlands and Ukraine will qualify.
-----------------------------------
The Netherlands
Ukraine
Switzerland
Slovenia

Semi 2

01. Azerbaijan
02. Ireland
03. Romania
04. Denmark
05. Cyprus

06. Croatia
07. Georgia
08. Armenia

09. Bulgaria
10. Sweden
----------------
11. Israel
12. Turkey
13. Ukraine

14. The Netherlands
15. Switzerland
16. Lithuania
17. Slovenia

I hope I've bolded the correct countries. laugh.gif So judging from the above list, more of my faves from Semi 2 have qualified - my three least faves from Semi 1 qualified. Thus this is a better showing of results.

Timoteij *could* on reflection also not done that well, seeing as the folky pop isn't doing great this year - old fashioned pop is excelling again, maybe Josh won't come last after all laugh.gif

Salem would have been a guaranteed finalist and was the real missed opportunity for them in MF this year. Very different structure to anything else in Semi 2, and would have eased through in my opinion.
