Alternative, the original is just too dark to see any detail. The ideal would have been a mix of the two back in 1997 but happy we have both.

Original. Some people are just distracted by pretty pretty colours.

I still prefer the original. It had a concept as in they had taken over the world and that was true in 97.

The dark gothic Tim Burton vibe turns many off it but I do think it works.

The new video shows them off a lot better due to the lighting but just seems like it has no substance besides their looks.

I’m grateful it exists though it was a nice little treat.

The original for sure. It’s more of a fully realised music video and it’s pretty epic. I just wish we could have it true 4K or even proper HD instead of an upscale that actually smooths out details too much. Despite the darkness of the video we’d definitely see more detail if it was remade to today’s standards.

The colourful alternative is great but it’s definitely a bonus for me, not conceptually superior. Mainly I like it for the fact that we get to see them crystal clear as if it was only filmed recently.

Overall the original, though I prefer the colours and the mood from the alternative version.

If the original video had the colour grading and the more jubilant mood whilst mantaining the storyline and the effects of the original, it would have been perfect!

Never expected an alternative version of the video, and also did not expect to like it more than original! Cheers to the creator! cheer.gif

100% the original its my favourite Spice Girls video.

I've always loved the juxtaposition of the video being a dark, gothic end of the world type thing to the colourful poppy feel of the song. It is not what you would have expected at all from the girls at the time. The new one is fun but that's all there's no storyline to it unlike the official video. I would love them to upscale the original like the Steps videos have been done recently.

People keep saying there is a plot/storyline to the original, am I missing something? I've always seen the original as set in the future or another planet (hence hoverboards and spaceships) where they are on everything like they were/are in present day earth only the future is dark and bleak.

I know what you mean and I completely agree, though upscaling isn't the right term for what we want to see! All of the Spice Girls' videos are actually upscaled, using AI software to try and improve the quality, but it results in videos with scenes that look too artificial, particularly the background stuff. In an effort to look less pixelated, finer details are smoothed out and can result in some horrible looking footage. Look how peculiar Victoria looks in the picture I've posted, while Melanie C has essentially become a ghostly figure

and this lacks so much detail that they look like aliens:

I wasn't too thrilled with the results of the Spice Girls upscales. While it's superficially better, it's not true HD and they come across as being a bit fake to me. Some of their videos looked better than others to be fair. From memory Spice Up Your Life is one of the less pleasing outcomes.

Quite a lot of the Steps videos had the original film negatives located and scanned, so that the music videos were able to be recreated from scratch in excellent quality. The clips used in the alternative version of Spice Up Your Life came from film that was scanned too. In theory it's possible for the original video to be recreated, but I'm guessing the special effects would make this a more time consuming and expensive task than the Steps videos.

There's one Steps video that was unfortunately just upscaled, by the looks of it - Summer of Love. That produced some rather interesting results, lol. I assume the source they pulled this from wasn't great. Poor Lee:

Thank goodness pretty much every other Steps video from their HD/4K project turned out so much better than that one!

That's exactly the story / concept behind it, spot on. It's such a good take on the spice mania of the time and also contrasts so well with the song it goes from making it another pop song to something far more interesting.

The concept they wanted was some form of carnival or travelling celebration, I kind of see them ending up with something like Reach by S Club, which again is a fun video but not on the same level as SUYL. Funny Simon Fuller was their manager too.

I wouldn't call that a storyline though, just a set up for the video. Nothing actually happens in the SUYL video in terms of any sort of plot.
