BuzzJack Music Forum _ Katy Perry _ Never Really Over • First Single

New single from Katy Perry called "Never Really Over", which was released on May 31.

Posted by: 365 15th May 2019, 03:13 PM

Apparently it's called Never Really Over.

Posted by: HausofTove 15th May 2019, 04:18 PM

Hopefully she proves that about her career with this era!

That's true.

It seems that the above link is going to be the first view of Katy's official site, which will replace the current one soon. The countdown ends on May 31 at midnight CDT.

ETA: It looks like that website is fake. Sorry guys.

I know you can’t really tell the performance of a song based upon the hype but I just don’t see much hype and if this bombs it could legit turn into a worse era than witness in terms of sales and song peaks.

Posted by: slowdown73 19th May 2019, 12:37 PM

Interesting - hopefully better than witness material with the exception of chained to the rhythm.

Oooooh!!! Was not expecting new music so soon but I'm really excited *.*

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 24th May 2019, 02:03 PM

Is it actually a lead single from a new era?

That almost came as a bolt out of the blue if so, I didn't know she was actively working on new music.

Fan event in Los Angeles this Wednesday.

The information below was revealed by two different insiders.

• Written by Dagny Norvoll Sandvik, Dan Haywood, Gino Barletta, Harley Warner, Jason Gill, Katheryn Hudson and Michelle Buzz and it was produced by Zedd and Dreamlab. I assume Zedd (Anton Zaslavski) and Dreamlab (Daniel James and Leah Haywood) also have writing credits. The length is 3:44.
• Described as a pop hit, which begins slowly and it explodes later (I guess when the chorus begins). It doesn't have any latin influences, it's not a midtempo and it's 100% enjoyable.

There's only rumours so far though

Posted by: Juan Carlos 27th May 2019, 04:32 PM

The Spanish insider said that Katy has a "Medellín" look (in reference of Madonna's single) in the music video, so it seems that it was already shot. Also, the song is more uptempo and commercial than her previous album Witness and it's very 2011 in a good sense. It has a very classical structure with the first stripped verse, but it goes high when the chorus begins.

As a side note, this source also said that it's marked as the WW track of the week, so I expect Capitol to push harder the song (most likely in Spotify key playlists?) because there's confidence in the song.

Posted by: Juan Carlos 28th May 2019, 04:33 AM

Few more details from Olly, who confirmed that the music video was already shot.

QUOTE
The video is done, I believe the plan is to premiere the video on 30th too, there will be an alternative ending video and lyrics video premiered early next week.

Spotify vertical video will arrive late next week.

Is this actually coming out on Friday? She hasn't even hinted at anything yet.

I expect an announcement today or tomorrow at the very least because of the fan event, which will be later that day. Another possibility is that she will do that during the fan event, but I don't think that's a good idea, as well as a surprise release.

Posted by: Juan Carlos 28th May 2019, 03:10 PM

Confirmed by Katy.

Really hoping she can pull it out the bag with this one because I've been far from blown away by her recently (Con Calma aside) sad.gif

Posted by: RobBob 28th May 2019, 07:22 PM

I’m just gonna keep expectations of how this will perform super low and then I can’t be disappointed.

Posted by: Jack 28th May 2019, 09:10 PM

Come on Katy, get that redemption era you deserve!

Posted by: 365 29th May 2019, 08:43 AM

It's such a busy week but I really hope this gets bigger first week support than 365 did. Cover of Hot Hits, Insta-Radio 1 support, iTunes banner like Chained and ME did. I can see it all going to Miley or Cardi though.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 29th May 2019, 09:36 AM

Is this actually for a new album/era, or is it a release similar to 'Rise'?

SO EXCITED. I honestly don't know what I want or expect from her at this point but I am really excited!

Posted by: 365 29th May 2019, 10:59 AM

I'm told Never Really Over is insta-B listed on R1, which goes to show the radios have good confidence in it, despite the recent under-performances.

This is definitely a step in the right direction but calm down and think of Roar x

Posted by: Klaus 31st May 2019, 08:38 AM

This is so good!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 31st May 2019, 08:38 AM

Despite them both being huge I’d put Roar and California Gurls towards the bottom of my fave Katy tracks.

So as far as leads go this is already joint second with Chained. (For some reason I’ve always stanned I Kissed A Girl).

This is easily better than those for me and better than the majority of Witness tracks on first listen.

I’ll admit the video I need to rewatch to understand / get. But the song itself is a big step up and I think it’ll be a big slow burn type hit.

Great to see her back though biggrin.gif

Posted by: troylovesmusic 31st May 2019, 08:55 AM

The best thing she’s put out in years can actually see this being a hit for her !

#10 on iTunes!

Posted by: BiLLYx 31st May 2019, 11:26 AM

I feel like this is the era that should have followed Teenage Dream - The last album was very generic but this is unmistakably Katy and I LOVE it

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 31st May 2019, 11:57 AM

Oh, this is seriously fantastic! What a storming return. wub.gif

Posted by: RobBob 31st May 2019, 12:13 PM

This is f***ing perfect. I'm absolutely bowled over, this is EXACTLY what she should be doing at this point in her career - meshing that kind of spiritual, mature nature she's been edging her way to but with a very commercial and blog-pop kind of edge.

OFVOIVEIOJEVJIOEOIERIOGREIORE LOOOOVE.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 31st May 2019, 12:17 PM

I'm so glad to hear something from her again which has a storming chorus! wub.gif

Been so long.

Posted by: 365 31st May 2019, 12:35 PM

At first I was like "this wordy chorus isn't gonna work" but the way the song builds up it would usually have a generic drop, so replacing that with a quirky memorable tongue twister is ultimately what makes the song unique.

Posted by: blacksquare 31st May 2019, 12:57 PM

I know it isn't reinventing the wheel but it's just so joyous and wonderful. Euphoric.

I can't think of the last lead pop single that sounds as massive as this.

Posted by: 365 31st May 2019, 01:02 PM

I wonder if it'll do well commercially. It might be a cute hit in the UK but the US will be an uphill battle.

Posted by: Defaze 31st May 2019, 04:41 PM

I've loved a lot of her output recently despite the flopiness, but this is a huge triumph. Can see this being a big hit for her! The video's great too -- perfect amount of silly without veering into ridiculousness (hello Swish Swish).

Posted by: Jonjo 31st May 2019, 05:34 PM

I feel like this is what you get when you're not trying to chase viral trends with memes and stuff.

Just a pure, solid, all out pop banger. I'm one of the few who liked Witness, but there was no arguing it was a step back, but this brings her right back on track! wub.gif

I don't want to jump the gun either but I am having similar feelings — she hasn't had a song as euphoric as this since Teenage Dream. That anthemic pre-chorus leading into THAT chorus. And then her note into the middle eight. So wonderful.

Posted by: Cucumberella 31st May 2019, 07:54 PM

oh this is SO great!!!! so is the video. it's absolutely MADE for her.

katy perry is always at her best when she injects the fun.

Posted by: RobBob 31st May 2019, 08:29 PM

I’ve been avoiding making the Teenage Dream comparisons because I didn’t wanna look back in months like “wow I really went overboard” but that is how I feel... big statement though.

I think she really bloomed artistically with Witness and this seems like a step backwards for me but I guess it's alright.

Posted by: 365 1st June 2019, 04:56 PM

The Spotify numbers are great. 31 in UK is good given she didn't have a big push here.

10 Global and 11 in US are much better than I expected!

Posted by: Jade 2nd June 2019, 06:17 PM

I really want to love this because it starts off strong but I find the quick-fire wordy part so jarring sad.gif it doesn't work as effortlessly as something like Hayley Kiyoko's 'Curious' for example. Idk, maybe it'll be a grower, I hope so as it feels weird to be one of the only ones not loving it when I do usually really like Katy.

Posted by: Defaze 2nd June 2019, 07:30 PM

Shook at how well this is holding up. G'won Katy.

Posted by: Riser 3rd June 2019, 01:53 AM

I don't love it yet but I like it! It's pretty much exactly what I wanted from Katy, the song's not groundbreaking at all and that's fine with me. I hope it'll keep growing, certainly wouldn't call it one of her best yet.

Posted by: 365 3rd June 2019, 07:44 AM

I'm enamored by this. It also does a great job of playing to her strengths, giving the people what they want from her, AND all while feeling like a fresh step forward for her, with the sample giving scandi-influences. It has about 3 different hooks and they all flow into each other so, so well.

Posted by: Juliano 3rd June 2019, 12:37 PM

Day 4 and I'm still majorly in love, this could be becoming my favourite Katy song of all time.

Posted by: SamJudd 3rd June 2019, 02:36 PM

YES, she's back and finally back on form with her best release since the 'Prism' era and I've already ranked this as my 2nd fave lead single by her (after 'Roar'). I have to admit I was rather worried for a while, especially since the awful 'Witness' era and a string of MEH singles. I'd feared that she was fading, and since not having that terrible human piece of shit Dr Luke on production duties, she's really struggled to find her sound, The 'Witness' album proved that and felt that there was something missing.

Thankfully 'NRO' is a very promising step forward and could may well return Katy to her former glory days.

Posted by: 365 3rd June 2019, 02:42 PM

Currently:

UK:
#3 iTunes
#30 Spotify (Spotify support has not been as strong here as the other main markets)
#14 Apple Music

US:
#2 iTunes
#13 Spotify (for a weekend drop for a new song this is very steady)
#32 Apple Music (This is very strong for a pop song, AM US is very rap dominated)

All in all it's shaping to be her biggest hit since Chained, and if bigger than that it could be her biggest since Dark Horse. Time will tell, but it's looking promising.

Posted by: Scene 3rd June 2019, 10:02 PM

This is by far my favourite Katy song since 2011!! Nothing since besides Swish Swish has excited me as much as this. It's the perfect comeback track (and video) for her - mature, catchy, not OTT, not too leftfield, full of character. I'd love for this to be Katy's 6th #1 - but in this climate I won't get my hopes up. That Chorus!!!! wub.gif

Posted by: Botchia 3rd June 2019, 10:07 PM

I was initially underwhelmed by this and it felt a little disappointing for someone of her calibre aside the iconic 100 words a second chorus.

However, I've fully changed my opinion and this is a huge bop!! I'm sold!

Did 'Feels' not get any higher than #22 on Spotify? ohmy.gif That really surprises me!

That peaked at #3 but that's a Calvin single really, so I assume Joe means Katy leads.

I genuinely keep forgetting Feels was a thing, even though I enjoy it. D:

Posted by: danG 4th June 2019, 02:48 PM

I love Feels but don’t really associate it with Katy, she only has a few lines and it’s not the greatest she’s ever sounded as a vocalist. Suspect that’s the case with many here.

Posted by: UltraME! 5th June 2019, 09:58 AM

Obsessed with this, the chorus is SO good 😍😍

Posted by: Theonix 5th June 2019, 12:43 PM

I've just realised I haven't posted about this yet because it's been growing on me loads - I've had the chorus in my head everyday and I'm trying to learn the fast speak-singing section laugh.gif heart.gif

I'm just shocked more than anything about how overwhelmingly positive the reaction to this has been - I was really ready to give up on Katy's days of success after Witness and her features since have underperformed but a top 20 debut in both the UK & US would be absolutely huge for her! I'm hoping the album lives up to the same high standards that she's set

Posted by: Juliano 5th June 2019, 02:02 PM

God... even my fiancé was going around the house whistling this and it's not really his usual cup of tea. That's a good sign! laugh.gif Probably because I don't stop playing it though. LOL!

Posted by: gooddelta 5th June 2019, 02:07 PM

This is such a great track, a reminder of the type of pop song that Katy still does better than anyone else. Big, hooky, layered and colourful with lots going on, but without sounding messy.

I would love an album in the same vein, Witness was good enough but lacked the usual Katy magic, aside from Chained To The Rhythm.

Highest charting solo single since Roar

I never got the whole 'solo' distinction. I guarantee no-one's buying 'Dark Horse' on the basis of Juicy J's middle 8.

Still, fantastic debut after last era and especially impressive given how limited the initial Spotify support was. Can easily seeing it going top 10 next week.

Posted by: 365 7th June 2019, 08:30 PM

I really hope it does! I'm worried it'll go like 13-11-13-15 kind of chart run. Especially given Hot Hits have given it a shady placement even after a week of it doing well. It's basically had the same Spotify support as 365. Starting it off at #5 on NMF? What was that about?

Anyway, it debuted at #8 on the uk AirPlay chart which is GREAT.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 8th June 2019, 12:44 AM

Even if it ends missing the top 10 I think it’ll end up having good longevity and sticking around quite a bit. (Maybe like a Dangerous Woman by Ariana like hit - using that example as that was also a lead single).

It’s at 9 on iTunes Sales but I think it should climb soon as the top 2 tracks will fall a lot through the week.

The reaction has been positive though and even if this doesn’t go top 10 it’s set the wheels in motion for a revival.

New peak of #9 on Global Spotify. It increased in the UK too, but Taylor leap-frogged so it's still at #13.

Just another move up on Hot Hits of a few more places and it'll make the top 10. It would be a done deal if her label discounted it on Friday.

Edit: It got moved down to 22 on Hot Hits now. Vertical is up to 13th though...I'm not really sure which is more beneficial to have higher?

I think maybe the vertical being 12th/13th might help it more than the track being 17th which it was earlier in the week. In a way, it's the highest it's been. We'll see tomorrow if it gets another boost I guess. It would be nice having it top 10 on Spotify going into the weekend to guarantee top 10 overall.

Posted by: RobBob 25th June 2019, 09:57 PM

This has moved up to #3 on Hot Hits UK so hopefully that can give an extra push to top 10! If not, 59p reduction ahead of next week pls!

Posted by: 365 26th June 2019, 03:43 PM

Sadly it's a no for top 10 this week, but it could very well make #11. Spotify songs all fell yesterday (I think maybe the Summer Rewind playlists took a lot of listens away from tracks) apart from Taylor for some reason who had a huge jump.

I guess it's getting late in the day now to make the top 10, but it could make it next week if they discount it.

If it doesn't make the top 10, a run of 14-13-12-11 is going to be very frustrating. sad.gif

I still think it has a chance of top 10 next week if it continues to slightly climb over the next week on Spotify. It's a done deal if she discounts at midnight, but if not there's a handful of songs I think she could overtake:

SOS, Crown, You Need To Calm Down, Old Town Road, Wish You Well, No Guidance for example.

Yeah, it's been incredibly unlucky. Little Mix and Taylor keeping her out the other day despite this probably being the bigger overall hit. This week it increased in streams to it's peak but Glasto effect pushed it down. Mabel discounting and staying ahead of her despite being lower on Spotify. At least it's been an undeniably stable hit and is showing great longevity!

SOS is on ACR next week and the Glasto effects will wear off, so there is an outside chance. But the sales have collapsed a bit, as myself and Rob mentioned a few times, a discount would have done it, but it seems the label have not realised that. Also Hot Hits moved it down sad.gif

How frustrating.

By the way the songs overall sales by Friday will be approximately 132k, which is pretty great for the 5th week for a non-top 10 song.

This increased last week, so is back on SCR (and is increasing again this week). So has at least 3 more weeks before ACR, probably even 4..

Including this week's midweek this is the chart run so far:

A smash so big it has cannibalised 'Small Tank'!

Taylor agrees it's one of her best!

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 25th August 2019, 11:12 AM

And yet she abandoned it! I guess the team is looking for a huge hit, not realising that NRO was just where they needed to be rn.

Posted by: 365 1st September 2019, 04:58 PM

Heart FM have started spamming this 12 weeks later lmao. It's a shame they didn't get on board right away because they have a bigger impact on iTunes than Capital most of the time, probably would have managed that top 10!

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 1st September 2019, 09:50 PM

There are so many annoying little things they could've done to push this into the top 10, it's infuriating to think about it.

But mind you, who would have thought Katy Perry in 2019 would have a top 15 single, and one that spent 14 weeks in the top 40? I wouldn't have expected that!

Posted by: 365 15th September 2019, 08:30 PM

Posted by: SKOB 16th September 2019, 06:21 AM

And still they chose to move on to Small Talk so soon, bizarre.

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 16th September 2019, 09:00 AM

She needed to fire her whole team after Prism. This is just more proof they are absolutely shit.

Never Really Over / Small Talk is being released on 12" vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday!

I really hope this song can somehow score Katy her first Grammy next year. A f***ING SONG.

She has no chance. tongue.gif

Posted by: Juan Carlos 9th October 2019, 02:22 AM

A double-single release on vinyl of this alongside "Small Talk" will be out on November 29.

Posted by: gooddelta 18th October 2019, 08:33 AM

I've come to realise that this is my favourite Katy single ever. The no.12 peak is actually such an injustice for it considering the quality of the song, it's on the same 'unexpected deep into a career highlight' level as the likes of Believe and On The Floor for me.

Posted by: Mikal 18th October 2019, 11:46 AM

I'm baffled as to why they didn't continue to push this. They had a huge hit on their hands and decided "Small Talk" was going to do well? This would have been a big hit had it been given longer to flourish.

Posted by: Trick Or Queef! 18th October 2019, 11:57 AM

This is the team that didn't release Walking On Air as 2nd single, DH as third, then LL for four no.1s after Teenage Dream's 6. They are useless.

Posted by: 365 18th October 2019, 01:20 PM

The song has legs tbh. It's gonna end up being one of her most streamed songs ever, it's already her 8th.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 20th November 2019, 02:32 PM

No GRAMMY nominations for this.

Genuinely surprised tbh!

Posted by: davidas 21st November 2019, 09:40 AM

Can't believe the Grammys snubbed this sad.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 21st November 2019, 09:56 AM

It's disgusting. The fact that it's the best song out of the 5 already nominated in Pop Solo Performance and it really should've got a nomination at least!!

They really do hate her, don't they!? :/

It’s my third favourite by her behind E.T and I Kissed A Girl.

A huge hit. In the pre streaming days it would’ve been at least a top 5 hit! I genuinely felt this could’ve gotten her that Grammy too at least for dance recording I’m stunned it didn’t get nominated at all. I also really like the video too. A BOP.

I just heard this track for the first time today and thought of this straight away. I’d seen it on here a while back on on one of the first pages just didn’t get round to listening until today when the OCC posted an interview with Dagny which mentioned that song and Katy’s Never Really Over.

Never Really Over really was one of those times Katy got it RIGHT, both visually and sonically.

It's the first single that was released from the album — what would you call it?

Perhaps the tracklist hadn't been finalised at that time, or they just wanted to hype the release of 'Daisies' by calling it the first single. It's not that deep.

Why so many mental juggling just to deny the truth? Just knowing how to read is enough to know that Daisies is the first single, Katy's own words, and it's not the desperate fans who will change that. rolleyes.gif

It was quite literally the first single released from the album — a year ago. What would you call that? It's not difficult to grasp that Katy, and more importantly her team, would have wanted playlist support and hype for 'Daisies' after numerous underperforming singles last year. It's led the campaign this year.

I'm not entirely sure what you're so desperate to prove here, but it's embarrassing.

The only shameful thing here is you denying that Daisies is the first single (when Katy literally said Daisies is the first single) just because she included NRO (released more than a year ago) on the album to inflate streams, because if it depended on Daisies and Smile for that, the fate of this album would be even worse.

Stop living in a bubble and face reality. It's ridiculous to try to affirm at all costs something that isn't true. Embarrassing.

Posted by: JosephStyles 20th July 2020, 08:40 PM

Katy can say Daisies is single 1 all she wants, but she's wrong... laugh.gif

Posted by: HausofGhibli 20th July 2020, 08:56 PM

I think it's an attempt to make it seem like the era was getting a fresh start by calling it the first single ~ almost restarting the era to build up public interest again. I can't see how this could be demoted to a promo single, just because of that one tweet by her?

She announced 'Smile' as a single too just before it dropped, and it clearly is because of the radio push, but many are saying it's a promo one (because of its underperformance?), so who knows what is what with her songs right now laugh.gif It's turned into a very messy era which is so unlike her when you look back on the days of Teenage Dream and even Prism when everything was handled expertly. I just hope the rest of the album follows the quality of this SUBLIME song.

Posted by: JosephStyles 20th July 2020, 09:03 PM

It was because of the messiness this era that made Smile's single status questionable but it became undeniable when Radio 2 playlisted it! It's been a messy campaign for sure, but I think it's pretty clear at this point that the singles are Never Really Over -> Small Talk (now we know this is still part of the album in some capacity) -> Daisies -> Smile.

I would agree if she had just thrown the song on at the end of the album as a bonus track — but it's track one. It's the first single. Everyone — but you — knows it's the first single. Why does it even matter?

The irony is that I'm actually a Gaga fan — but this delusion and strange obsession with tearing Katy Perry down is too hard to ignore.

Posted by: ḇlackout 31st July 2020, 10:46 PM

This is probably my favourite single of hers... But I question placing it as track #1 on the album...

Also Never Really Over performed well on streaming and well she’s going to need it for the album to go at least Gold in the US.
