BuzzJack Music Forum _ TV Shows _ The Generation Game

The Generation Game is finally confirmed to be returning after endless years of rumours! Mel & Sue will be the new hosts, taking over from previous hosts Bruce Forsyth, Larry Grayson and Jim Davidson. The game show pits teams consisting of two family members, of different generations, competing against each other to win prizes.

QUOTE(BBC News)
Former Great British Bake Off hosts Mel and Sue are to host the return of BBC classic show The Generation Game. It has been commissioned for an initial four-episode run, although a launch date has yet to be set. The new show will combine aspects of the original series with new games.

"It's a cuddly toy, it's a toaster, it's a circular power saw, no it's Mel and Sue doing the Generation Game! We can't believe it, we are so excited!" the hosts said. 'We won Generation Game with a war dance'

BBC Studios said audiences had identified the Generation Game as "the TV show that viewers most wanted to see back on their screens".

The show sees pairs of family members across generations take part in performance and task-based games, with the ultimate goal of facing the Conveyor Belt. This is a memory test whereby the winning pair watches prizes pass on the belt before attempting to remember each one to win it, from household appliances to the infamous cuddly toy.

All the family pairs will start the show in the studio audience and only find out which game they are playing when Mel and Sue announce them. A panel of star judges will score the pairs after each game and decide which will get to face the Conveyor Belt.

Charlotte Moore, the director of BBC content, said: "The Generation Game is an iconic BBC One show, so to be able to bring it back for today's audience with Mel and Sue overseeing things is a wonderful moment for the channel."

The Generation Game began on BBC One in 1971, with Sir Bruce Forsyth as its longest-serving host. The entertainer fronted the show for two spells from 1971 to 1977 and 1990 to 1994. The Generation Game was presented by Larry Grayson between 1978 and 1982 and Jim Davidson from 1995 to 2002.

There have also been two one-off editions of the show. Graham Norton presented a Christmas edition in 2005, while Vernon Kay took charge of a version for Comic Relief in 2011. In 2014, one of the contestants on the Comic Relief special, Miranda Hart, was reported to be in talks to host a revival herself.

I remember when JIM hosted it, slightly less than glorious memories I may add. Mel & Sue do seem like a natural fit for it though.

Not surprised at this, it's been rumoured for quite a while!

Basil Brush basil.gif will be helping Mel & Sue with the revival!

Seems like they’ve filmed it/in the middle of filming but not sure when it will air!

Posted by: Suedehead2 Mar 21 2018, 04:41 PM

The first show (of two) will be on Easter Sunday.

Posted by: Mack. Mar 27 2018, 09:51 PM

Not sure after the two if it will get a full series.

It's already been cut down from four, which gives the impression that what's was filmed wasn't as impressive as hoped when the revival was announced. It could end up being successful and leading to an extended series later down the line, but I have a feeling that it won't last past these episodes.

I'll watching this with intrigue. Trailers look all right.

Indeed. Its only hope is that it gets a better audience reaction than the BBC are anticipating.

Apparently canned laughter was used for the programme according to a report.

Yeah I'll give it a go. Wonder if the second one's on the following Sunday.

Be good to see Basil Brush back on our screens.

basil.gif I'm watching this tonight. It would have been better on a traditional Saturday night. Probably got switched to Sunday not to clash with the last 2 shows of Ant & Dec

Hmm, I bet Mel & Sue wish they’d stayed with Bake Off. This is sadly awful so far sad.gif

Posted by: Suedehead2 Apr 1 2018, 08:08 PM

It's been quite fun in a naff sort of way laugh.gif

The pottery game was quite hilarious, the handle of the teapot laugh.gif the winners at the end forgot the Cuddly Bear sleep.gif I quite enjoyed it actually, maybe it would have worked better with a solo male host.

What a ridiculous thing to say

I enjoyed it and would watch if it became a full series. However, Lorraine and Richard Osman weren't needed at all. Money for nothing.

Not really as it doesn't need two hosts. I know they're a double act just like Ant & Dec but a solo host, male or female could do it just as well.

How could they forget the iconic cuddly toy? laugh.gif

They were reasonably amusing (Richard Osman more so) but I still didn't really see the point of them being there.

the ridiculous part was indicating that it needed a male solo host, not that it needed just one host.

Because the game show always had a male host, with a female assistant, I can't see what is wrong with that.

Why can’t it be a female host with a handsome male assistant?

I didn't like the sketch scene at the end but it was all right the show was.

£1.5 million on the two scrapped episodes if this story is to be believed.

I wonder why they scrapped two episodes though, what was so bad about them that they are willing to spend money on dead air but are happy for another two to go out on TV.

Posted by: Suedehead2 Apr 12 2018, 04:51 PM

Maybe the games went very badly wrong. Perhaps one of the tasks proved to be much too difficult.
