Could 2020 finally be the year that 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' reaches #1?
26 years on from its release and it has yet to outdo its peak of#2. It has come close on a few occasions, but these were #1 instead:
1994: East 17 - Stay Another Day
2017: Ed Sheeran - Perfect
2018: Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho (Mariah missed out by 152 sales )
2019: Alexa Goulding - Alexa, Play Christmas Songs
In the Friday 27th November 2020 chart, Ariana Grande - Positions is #1 for a 5th week on sales of 42,870. Presumably its sales will decrease in the Fri 4th Dec chart. There doesn't appear to be very strong competition. Billie Eilish and Little Mix are the only other two songs that managed 30k+ in the latest chart.
Mariah was #14 with 18,609, an improvement on the equivalent week in 2019, which was #34 - 14,360. On 6th December 2019 it was #8 with 32,389 chart sales. If the song continues to perform better in 2020 than 2019, could it edge its way ahead of Ariana?
Vote in the poll and let us know what you predict will happen!
Praying that it does! Come on Mariah
I think it will get there on either the 11th or the 18th (or both).
I think this is bound to be its year unless there is a big surprise release. Chose the Xmas chart week as for when but wouldn’t be surprised if it gets there sooner where none of the new releases seem to be gaining any major traction.
I just don't know could easily see it again at #2
I'd like it to go to #1 but it's gonna chart year upon year upon year anyways so it doesn't matter if it misses out
It'll be before Christmas chart if it does get there though.
I'm going to be OPTIMISTIC and say yes, and it'll make it on 11th December, but obviously the sooner the better and of course I want it to make #1, who wouldn't?
PLEASE
We need re-releases
we need remixes
we need a rapper
we need physicals
we need vinyls
we need google hangouts
we need habbo hotel
we need lets eat with mel and gino
ANYTHING TO STOP THAT TROLL GLYNNE.
yes come on Mariah
I hope it does purely so we don't have another round of 'this year was her last chance to get #1 and the OCC stole it from her!' followed by next November 'is this the year Mariah will finally get #1?', and repeat ad infinitum every year x
no thanks
I surely hope so. I want it to get the Xmas #1 too, these Amazon exclusives and charity singles snatching the Xmas #1 then disappearing from the face of the earth really irk me.
absolutely
11th December coming to outsell Christmas Day itself if this happens.
I hope it goes #1 this year! It’s such a timeless classic.
I'm feeling super optimistic so will say it will be number 1 next Friday.
Was just saying to someone offline, wish it would to stop all the speculation every year.
it could be quite funny if it was now #1 all of December except fort the Xmas chart
I think she's be #1 for sure on the 11th and the 18th... maybe also on the 4th as Ariana is gonna do 35K only if even
but I reckon on the 25th Ladbaby will grab the #1
I’m sorry but there’s no way she’s going #1 this Friday.
I'm always curious about why people choose to 'null vote' in polls, there's been 3 so far!
If it does do it, my guess is it'll be the week of 11th or 18th and an Amazon or charity single will take the Christmas #1. but just praying it manages it!!
Quick, someone tell Michael who Joni Mitchell is.
I voted no cause I'm pessimistic and I do believe the OCC made up streams to keep her at number 2 last year so what's to stop them again this year.. Anyways I would love it to finally get to number 1 as it rightly deserves.
Surely there will be a charity Christmas number one in this year of all years?
I voted yes and think it’ll be next Friday if anything. Don’t the Xmas songs start evening out following the big 1st December boost until the 5/6 days before Xmas Eve?
Would anyone not think it’s a fitting Christmas number 2?
I can see it being number 1 this year. I voted for next Friday then realised I was thinking of its sales without ACR.
It's about time it got to number one. Mariah Carey is a Christmas legend.
I voted no - with Ariana beating her for the next couple of weeks and LadBaby during the Christmas week. If Sausage Rolls Part 3 doesn't materialise, then yes.
I really don't want to manifest this though because I know the mass complaining on the forum would be unbearable if she was kept off
I think I'd get demoted as Ariana AF mod if I rallied against her I do want to see 'positions' keep going if it can, but if not then Mariah would be a great #1.
Another Mariah Carey one with Ariana Grande be high
In the equivalent of the 11th and 18th weeks last year Mariah was doing around 35k chart sales. Positions is likely to be gradually sagging from 40k to about 35k in December. So assuming no other challengers come along before Christmas week she just needs to do a bit better than last year to get there before Christmas week, and so far she’s doing much better than last year.
Probably! I’m just glad that Ellie managed to do it first
One scenario which would close this forum down would be if the Oh Santa remix beat AIWFCIY to number one due to it ending up on SCR
I would be amazed if it got enough support to achieve that, even with Ariana on board! But I suppose stranger things have happened.
I'm also curious whether Merry Christmas will ever be able to peak higher than #32 Last year it made it to #54, its highest position since 1994!
13.11.1994 - #32, 28 weeks
(Entry: 13.11.94) 45-54-58-55-45-32-32-103-out (8 weeks)
(Entry: 26.11.95) 195-178-136-143-157-out (5 weeks)
(Entry: 22.11.98) 116-120-out (2 weeks)
(Entry: 08.12.17) 181-159-191-142-out (4 weeks)
(Entry: 07.12.18) 155-133-121-95-out (4 weeks)
(Entry: 08.11.19) 141-out (1 week)
(Entry: 06.12.19) 116-108-98-54-out (4 weeks)
I was only thinking of a hilarious scenario that would be unbelievable, if it did happen I’d eat my hat!
Strange that her album only reached #32, it’s recharted recently probably because Christmas albums seem to be in fashion in the uk all of a sudden post-Buble!
I really hope she gets there and realistically it would be either 11 or 18 Dec, but 35-40k is so rarely enough for a #1 that it makes me think it still won't happen, whether it's because of 'positions' holding on or something like 'Whoopty' blowing up. I can see her doing 45k or so Christmas week, but that won't be enough (because Ladbaby).
Did she not do like 70k last year or was that on SCR?
Yeh the vinyl is sitting pride of place beside the till in my local hmv
I'm really hoping it can get there.
Yeh id agree with that but he will only need 45k downloads to get number one which he’s shown is easily done for him!
it'll be #1 next week (11/12), there'll be nothing the OCC can do to stop it this time.
I'm thinking Friday 18th
I'm not a massive Mariah Stan but even I want this to get #1
I guess East 17 was the more popular track back in 1994 (obviously as it was No.1) but Mariah's won the war because 'All I Want For Christmas' has become more iconic and bigger over the decades.
Both Mariah and Wham's Last Christmas both deserve to be #1 and wouldn't it be great if it was during Christmas week
I would hardly say ‘Mariah won the war’ lol. East 17 prob didn’t realise how big their single would be each year too! They won because they were a big British group at the time and most likely were able to promote at the time.
It’ll be interesting to see what they do lol
How many times can I stream per day that count?
Fair enough, I don’t doubt Mariahs song is the bigger. It’s probably one of the biggest pop songs of all time.
I voted no, I think Ariana will be #1 for a couple weeks yet and then one of the Amazon exclusives will take over. She should get a couple more weeks at #2 though
Ready for 4 weeks at number 2
I initially voted No but I think it's inevitable now that Mariah will be #1 at some point between now and the end of the year.
NEXT WEEK IS IT'S WEEK
QUOTE ME.
I don't think it will happen this week but it depends on if she's close to Ariana with the ACR streams halved. I was thinking it could grab number 1 on the 11th maybe. Really depends though. You now have to throw in the Alexa tracks and unfortunately I have a strong feeling they'll occupy the top 2 at some point but I hope not as neither as anything special. I'm not here for made up sales to get them higher either
Little mix this week and Mariah next
She's already on 600,000 and we aren't even into December, her streams will be around 800,000 on the start of December and she's ahead on other streaming devices too. I can't see this NOT being #1 this year.
She has such a good chance of doing it this week
7 versions reduced to 59p on iTunes - love that Sony are going after that #1 too
The gap closed between Positions and All I Want for Christmas Is You, it's now #2 on iTunes, and it was played (or the celebs were singing along? I didn't watch!) in I'm a Celeb. It's looking positive *.*
Jess murdered it on karaoke during I'm A Celeb so who knows, perhaps people may have wanted to cleanse their ears and search the original
(love u Jess x)
I'll have to watch it! Sounds like Jess may need to stick to rapping about lettuce and feta x
She tried her best I thought lol. Shane did The Jam well!!
If Mariah gets to No.1 on Friday, how many chart records will it break?
Doesn’t look likely now I’m afraid
There's still hope
https://linktr.ee/AIWFCIYUK
Won't do it this week but has a good chance next week or on 18th.
Next week!
It was off to a good start but a weekday Dec 1st hurt it. So #1 next week or the week after
I'm estimating that Mariah could end up about 1,100 behind Ariana tomorrow Maybe 39.4k for Ariana vs. 38.3k for Mariah.
So unless Mariah's UK fans go crazy with downloading over the next 6 hours, it's not looking like this week will be Mariah's week, unfortunately! It might be better for fans to hold off downloading until next week...
Rigged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YouTube hasn't submitted streams for 2 days, I wonder how much Mariah is behind after that is added?
Is you tube data not minimal usually?
As of yesterday with December 1st missing.
#1 - Ariana Grande
24,355 Sales
23,703 Streaming [22,237 Premium Audio | 709 Ad-Funded Audio | 757 Video]
652 Pure [651 Downloads | 1 CD]
#2 - Mariah Carey
22,568 Sales
21,095 Streaming (ACR applied) [19,743 Premium Audio | 556 Ad-Funded Audio | 796 Video]
1,473 Pure [1,473 Downloads]
The week before she was given 891 and ranked 3rd on the video chart while Ariana was 10.
Mariah still the biggest song in the country this week
It has the benefit of now huge surprise releases today to hold it off next week
I know I would have purchased it if I’d seen it as it would be rare!
Maybe it won't be #1 next week now but I think it's last realistic shot is the 18th as Ladbaby if he is indeed releasing will get the 25th (and if not then Mariah could be that week but I'm not as sure on that one) and the exclusives have dropped off compared to the earlier midweeks.
Mariah's new Christmas song could split the vote and deny All I Want... that long awaited number 1.
What’s the best week to download it for it to have a real shot at #1?
It seems a shoe-in to me next week unless there's an unexpected new release. It won't double its streams like this week but it will still increase now it's properly December, and it barely needs to increase at all to get #1 as Positions is falling. True it won't have the benefit of the extra streams on the 1st this week but the 2nd and the 3rd have already been way up on the last few weekdays of November on Spotify.
Today's Spotify update is looking very good for Mariah's chances this week;
847,643 (ACR value 423,822) vs. Positions on 328,238
i hope that it gets to number 1 this week. The streams are so high - it has to be number 1.
I think it'll be #1 but not Christmas #1 which will be Ladbaby or Justin Bieber I think.
I do think this year will be it's last chance. I know everyone seemingly gets annoyed by these comments but I kind of doubt they will continue with the same rules for old Xmas songs next year, I could be wrong though!
Doesnt his sausage roll advert have a jingle or something, sure he could turn that into a song if he really wanted too
AIWFCIY is #1 in the First Look update Even if it seems like it's a foregone conclusion, I'm still nervous
I'm nervous aswell but I hope it holds on.
Let it have its moment to shut everyone up AND THEN CHANGE THE RULES..
26 years is a long time coming for a No.1
Very longm too long, but hopefully this is the year.
The golden opportunity now.
Looking good for her now, ‘Positions’ streams are below 300k a day now as well!
She should have done a remix with Ariana and Jennifer instead of oh Santa
She’s finally done it 🥳🤩😭 Well done Mariah 😍
Now the question is... how long can it stay on top?
Last week I did post about altering my prediction from the 11th to the 18th but I'm glad my original one came true. Turns out it'll probably be #1 on the 18th as well
I'll say 3 weeks now unless Wham has enough to overtake (and they weren't that far off I don't think).
Totally wouldn't be surprised if Ladbaby is just keeping things super late and nabs Christmas #1 still but would definitely prefer Mariah or one of the others. Would be nice to actually have a Christmas song be the Christmas #1! It's been a long time!
Well... I was right about Ariana keeping her #1 last week but otherwise wrong, fair play, Christmas songs are killing it this year and especially Mariah!
Well done to her!
Finally! Truly overcoming obstacles the OCC put in its way!
Well she will pass 3 million with ease this year, I wo dear hiw much she earns a tear from tbe song.
SECOND WEEK DONE!!!
Legend
Do you’d think she’ll return to number one every year now?
Not sure about every year but i think its possible again,
I think it depends a LOT on the level of competition. This year the only competition has been Ariana and she was on her way down when Mariah's ascent happened. Last year there was much stronger competition in the form of big songs from Tones and I, Lewis Capaldi, Stormzy, Dua Lipa and Arizona Zervas, so Mariah never got higher than #6 until that New Year chart where Alexa worked her magic.
There's also been a notable increase in all Xmas songs this year, perhaps due to lockdowns and COVID, so it's hard to predict next year and further on.
She still hasn’t quite made the sales Number 1, not that it matters all that much I guess! Does anyone know how many downloads she had last week? Surprised that wasn’t in the report.
this year was the perfect storm of COVID, I don't think Mariah making #1 will be a yearly thing (except on the Streaming chart).
Last time I checked, the official chart gets broadcast on Radio 1 and not the streaming chart. Mariah's ACR status means she won't be making #1 every year (it infamously stopped her in 2018 and 2019).
Is there any chance of Mariah retaining a third week at Number 1 on Friday.
I am more than happy with the current two weeks at Number 1 but would greatly welcome the Christmas Number 1 and blocking the awful Ladboy song.
I can’t imagine it. I would say he’s already sold 15k today alone!
We need to stream like crazy this week
Or indeed, the maximum 10 per day
