BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Will 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' peak at #1 this year?

Posted by: Jay* Nov 28 2020, 03:45 PM

Could 2020 finally be the year that 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' reaches #1? ohmy.gif

26 years on from its release and it has yet to outdo its peak of#2. It has come close on a few occasions, but these were #1 instead:

1994: East 17 - Stay Another Day
2017: Ed Sheeran - Perfect
2018: Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho (Mariah missed out by 152 sales dry.gif )
2019: Alexa Goulding - Alexa, Play Christmas Songs

In the Friday 27th November 2020 chart, Ariana Grande - Positions is #1 for a 5th week on sales of 42,870. Presumably its sales will decrease in the Fri 4th Dec chart. There doesn't appear to be very strong competition. Billie Eilish and Little Mix are the only other two songs that managed 30k+ in the latest chart.

Mariah was #14 with 18,609, an improvement on the equivalent week in 2019, which was #34 - 14,360. On 6th December 2019 it was #8 with 32,389 chart sales. If the song continues to perform better in 2020 than 2019, could it edge its way ahead of Ariana? thinking.gif

Vote in the poll and let us know what you predict will happen!

Praying that it does! Come on Mariah

Posted by: JulianT Nov 28 2020, 03:47 PM

I think it will get there on either the 11th or the 18th (or both).

Posted by: GTH Nov 28 2020, 03:48 PM

I think this is bound to be its year unless there is a big surprise release. Chose the Xmas chart week as for when but wouldn’t be surprised if it gets there sooner where none of the new releases seem to be gaining any major traction.

Posted by: Chromaticdisco Nov 28 2020, 03:48 PM

I just don't know could easily see it again at #2 laugh.gif

I'd like it to go to #1 but it's gonna chart year upon year upon year anyways so it doesn't matter if it misses out

It'll be before Christmas chart if it does get there though.

Posted by: JosephStyles Nov 28 2020, 03:50 PM

I'm going to be OPTIMISTIC and say yes, and it'll make it on 11th December, but obviously the sooner the better cool2.gif and of course I want it to make #1, who wouldn't?

PLEASE

We need re-releases
we need remixes
we need a rapper
we need physicals
we need vinyls
we need google hangouts
we need habbo hotel
we need lets eat with mel and gino

ANYTHING TO STOP THAT TROLL GLYNNE.

I voted for the same date! I feel like it'll come close on 4th December, but I'd love to be surprised and it make it to #1 that soon in the month *.*

Posted by: Bré Nov 28 2020, 04:28 PM

I hope it does purely so we don't have another round of 'this year was her last chance to get #1 and the OCC stole it from her!' followed by next November 'is this the year Mariah will finally get #1?', and repeat ad infinitum every year x

Posted by: Nick Jonas Nov 28 2020, 04:29 PM

Posted by: Alohomara Nov 28 2020, 04:36 PM

I surely hope so. I want it to get the Xmas #1 too, these Amazon exclusives and charity singles snatching the Xmas #1 then disappearing from the face of the earth really irk me.

11th December coming to outsell Christmas Day itself if this happens.

Posted by: Bjork Nov 28 2020, 05:26 PM

it could be quite funny if it was now #1 all of December except fort the Xmas chart

I think she's be #1 for sure on the 11th and the 18th... maybe also on the 4th as Ariana is gonna do 35K only if even
but I reckon on the 25th Ladbaby will grab the #1

Yes I am wading into the salty brine pools of JONASSTYLE'S SALT KINGDOM in here!!!!, but needs MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. The OCC really DID steal it both times
2. It made up WILDLY inaccurate Thurs streams that just HAPPENED to bring it below Ava Max
3. It literally changed the entire rules of the chart to stop Mariah
4. Last year, it allowed complete and utter Amazon shenanigans without a peep just to stop Mariah. Absolutely disgraceful!! People are listening to Mariah this year. They're not listening to Alexa Goulding!! And if they do listen to River, it will be to the original by Train from their CLASSIC, Christmas in Tahoe.
5. Laat year, those desperate OCC TROLLOPS even PURPOSEFULLY counted Mariah's video sales drastically wrong. DRASTICALLY! Mariah won the battle last year and she won it vs Eva Max too, and in fact she has been the no.1 for almost every week in December for years now. They just refuse to admit it with their anti-Mariah ACR rules.
6. Speaking of ACR, they refused Mariah's request to get reset last year even though it was getting a new promo push. They completely disregarded their OWN anti-Mariah rules to be extra anti-Mariah. Those absolute TURDS!!!!!!!!! Just thinking aboot their corruption gets me blood boiling. All you anti-Mariah haters can absolutely get over it when she actually does the numbers to be no.1 and was no.1 twice even on ACR, but the OCC trollopy turds just refused to admit it.

They hate Mariah and are desperate to stop her getting to no.1. They should just let it happen by now!!!!! Anti-Mariah Desperate Debbies.

Posted by: ts7sfkptm Nov 28 2020, 05:54 PM

If it does do it, my guess is it'll be the week of 11th or 18th and an Amazon or charity single will take the Christmas #1. but just praying it manages it!!

I voted no cause I'm pessimistic and I do believe the OCC made up streams to keep her at number 2 last year so what's to stop them again this year.. Anyways I would love it to finally get to number 1 as it rightly deserves.

Posted by: Steve201 Nov 28 2020, 06:17 PM

Surely there will be a charity Christmas number one in this year of all years?

I voted yes and think it’ll be next Friday if anything. Don’t the Xmas songs start evening out following the big 1st December boost until the 5/6 days before Xmas Eve?

Would anyone not think it’s a fitting Christmas number 2?

Posted by: Robbie Nov 28 2020, 07:47 PM

I can see it being number 1 this year. I voted for next Friday then realised I was thinking of its sales without ACR.

Posted by: adrianreavill83 Nov 28 2020, 08:06 PM

It's about time it got to number one. Mariah Carey is a Christmas legend.

Bar Ladbaby, I think people are a bit fed up with all the charity singles we have had so far this year.

Even Ladbaby would need some major sales to stop Mariah if her streams keep building as they have so far this year.

Posted by: Jade Nov 28 2020, 08:18 PM

I voted no - with Ariana beating her for the next couple of weeks and LadBaby during the Christmas week. If Sausage Rolls Part 3 doesn't materialise, then yes.

I really don't want to manifest this though because I know the mass complaining on the forum would be unbearable if she was kept off rotf.gif

I think I'd get demoted as Ariana AF mod if I rallied against her teresa.gif I do want to see 'positions' keep going if it can, but if not then Mariah would be a great #1.

Posted by: Everton Nov 28 2020, 08:23 PM

Another Mariah Carey one with Ariana Grande be high

Posted by: JulianT Nov 28 2020, 08:51 PM

In the equivalent of the 11th and 18th weeks last year Mariah was doing around 35k chart sales. Positions is likely to be gradually sagging from 40k to about 35k in December. So assuming no other challengers come along before Christmas week she just needs to do a bit better than last year to get there before Christmas week, and so far she’s doing much better than last year.

Posted by: Brightest Blue Nov 28 2020, 09:41 PM

Probably! I’m just glad that Ellie managed to do it first biggrin.gif

Posted by: Steve201 Nov 28 2020, 11:14 PM

One scenario which would close this forum down would be if the Oh Santa remix beat AIWFCIY to number one due to it ending up on SCR

Posted by: Jay* Nov 28 2020, 11:23 PM

I would be amazed if it got enough support to achieve that, even with Ariana on board! But I suppose stranger things have happened.

I'm also curious whether Merry Christmas will ever be able to peak higher than #32 thinking.gif Last year it made it to #54, its highest position since 1994!

13.11.1994 - #32, 28 weeks

I was only thinking of a hilarious scenario that would be unbelievable, if it did happen I’d eat my hat!

Strange that her album only reached #32, it’s recharted recently probably because Christmas albums seem to be in fashion in the uk all of a sudden post-Buble!

Posted by: jimwatts Nov 28 2020, 11:57 PM

I really hope she gets there and realistically it would be either 11 or 18 Dec, but 35-40k is so rarely enough for a #1 that it makes me think it still won't happen, whether it's because of 'positions' holding on or something like 'Whoopty' blowing up. I can see her doing 45k or so Christmas week, but that won't be enough (because Ladbaby).

Posted by: Steve201 Nov 29 2020, 12:00 AM

Did she not do like 70k last year or was that on SCR?

Imagine the power LadBaby feels knowing that anything he releases, any Christmas, will always be number 1. Forever.

He could just cough into the microphone for three minutes this year (“Coughage Rolls”) and it would still outpeak Mariah, depressingly.

You just can't assume that. The UK music buyer is very fickle and could soon tire of him and go for the next gimmick.

I guess East 17 was the more popular track back in 1994 (obviously as it was No.1) but Mariah's won the war because 'All I Want For Christmas' has become more iconic and bigger over the decades.

Both Mariah and Wham's Last Christmas both deserve to be #1 and wouldn't it be great if it was during Christmas week

Posted by: Steve201 Nov 29 2020, 05:31 PM

I would hardly say ‘Mariah won the war’ lol. East 17 prob didn’t realise how big their single would be each year too! They won because they were a big British group at the time and most likely were able to promote at the time.

I don't think anyone's disputing that Stay Another Day has proved enduringly popular as well? Mariah does undeniably have the bigger song these days though, which means she has "won the war."

I'm not putting East 17 down at all, yes the song is still played on radio and TV, but I think in the long run Mariah's song has become much bigger and more memorable that's all.

I don't think it will happen this week but it depends on if she's close to Ariana with the ACR streams halved. I was thinking it could grab number 1 on the 11th maybe. Really depends though. You now have to throw in the Alexa tracks and unfortunately I have a strong feeling they'll occupy the top 2 at some point but I hope not as neither as anything special. So unless Mariah's UK fans go crazy with downloading over the next 6 hours, it's not looking like this week will be Mariah's week, unfortunately! It might be better for fans to hold off downloading until next week...

Can't be. The No.1 is the biggest song of the week. She's not even been midweek No.1 yet this year.

I love the fact that 1 person in the country has located and purchased a Positions CD this week. I wonder if they realise how special they are.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 4 2020, 01:04 PM

I know I would have purchased it if I’d seen it as it would be rare!

Posted by: Rob S Claus Dec 4 2020, 06:19 PM

Maybe it won't be #1 next week now but I think it's last realistic shot is the 18th as Ladbaby if he is indeed releasing will get the 25th (and if not then Mariah could be that week but I'm not as sure on that one) and the exclusives have dropped off compared to the earlier midweeks.

Posted by: zenon Dec 4 2020, 06:25 PM

Mariah's new Christmas song could split the vote and deny All I Want... that long awaited number 1.

Posted by: Spice Girls Net Dec 4 2020, 06:28 PM

What’s the best week to download it for it to have a real shot at #1?

Posted by: Jingle Jules Dec 4 2020, 06:30 PM

It seems a shoe-in to me next week unless there's an unexpected new release. It won't double its streams like this week but it will still increase now it's properly December, and it barely needs to increase at all to get #1 as Positions is falling. True it won't have the benefit of the extra streams on the 1st this week but the 2nd and the 3rd have already been way up on the last few weekdays of November on Spotify.

Posted by: dancemberlexa Dec 6 2020, 10:41 AM

Today's Spotify update is looking very good for Mariah's chances this week;

847,643 (ACR value 423,822) vs. Positions on 328,238

Posted by: daniellovesmusic Dec 6 2020, 01:38 PM

i hope that it gets to number 1 this week. The streams are so high - it has to be number 1.

Posted by: JackTheeStallion Dec 6 2020, 01:52 PM

I think it'll be #1 but not Christmas #1 which will be Ladbaby or Justin Bieber I think.

I do think this year will be it's last chance. I know everyone seemingly gets annoyed by these comments but I kind of doubt they will continue with the same rules for old Xmas songs next year, I could be wrong though!

I am also expecting another rule change to come sooner rather than later to counter the Christmas domination we are seeing now, so hoping Mariah gets it before they remove the possibility of it happening in the future.

There's still no confirmation that Ladbaby's even releasing a Christmas single this year... I imagine he'll announce it very imminently though if it's happening!

Didn't he announce that he wanted to break Spice Girls record?

Maybe due to Covid he hasn't been able to record though.

Last week I did post about altering my prediction from the 11th to the 18th but I'm glad my original one came true. Turns out it'll probably be #1 on the 18th as well laugh.gif
I'll say 3 weeks now unless Wham has enough to overtake (and they weren't that far off I don't think).

Totally wouldn't be surprised if Ladbaby is just keeping things super late and nabs Christmas #1 still but would definitely prefer Mariah or one of the others. Would be nice to actually have a Christmas song be the Christmas #1! It's been a long time!

QUOTE(jimwatts @ Nov 28 2020, 11:57 PM) *
I really hope she gets there and realistically it would be either 11 or 18 Dec, but 35-40k is so rarely enough for a #1 that it makes me think it still won't happen, whether it's because of 'positions' holding on or something like 'Whoopty' blowing up. I can see her doing 45k or so Christmas week, but that won't be enough (because Ladbaby).

Sometimes it's nice to be wrong biggrin.gif never thought she'd do 44k this early!

Posted by: Slade Dec 11 2020, 06:56 PM

Well... I was right about Ariana keeping her #1 last week kink.gif but otherwise wrong, fair play, Christmas songs are killing it this year and especially Mariah!

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 11 2020, 07:27 PM

I'm wondering if it could do enough next week to pass 3 million in total, before Christmas chart week? It needs to do 98,462 sales.

Some great stats there. Will the overall figures take into account streaming era ‘sales’?

Think it’ll do 82-83k SCR sales this week and around 120k SCR sales Xmas week!

I don't think so, considering there is no X Factor show this year if there was one it would have easily got to #1 this week 43k is kinda beatable.

Posted by: JosephCarey Dec 18 2020, 09:43 PM

I think it depends a LOT on the level of competition. This year the only competition has been Ariana and she was on her way down when Mariah's ascent happened. Last year there was much stronger competition in the form of big songs from Tones and I, Lewis Capaldi, Stormzy, Dua Lipa and Arizona Zervas, so Mariah never got higher than #6 until that New Year chart where Alexa worked her magic.

There's also been a notable increase in all Xmas songs this year, perhaps due to lockdowns and COVID, so it's hard to predict next year and further on.

Posted by: Jingle Jules Dec 18 2020, 10:21 PM

She still hasn’t quite made the sales Number 1, not that it matters all that much I guess! Does anyone know how many downloads she had last week? Surprised that wasn’t in the report.

Posted by: dancemberlexa Dec 18 2020, 11:07 PM

Last time I checked, the official chart gets broadcast on Radio 1 and not the streaming chart. tongue.gif Mariah's ACR status means she won't be making #1 every year (it infamously stopped her in 2018 and 2019).

We've ALL gone there, bought a "Mariah for #1" t-shirt, came back, went there again to check Ava Max's pulse and came back again already. Just get over it.

Is there any chance of Mariah retaining a third week at Number 1 on Friday.
I am more than happy with the current two weeks at Number 1 but would greatly welcome the Christmas Number 1 and blocking the awful Ladboy song.

Given that Ladbaby has likely already outsold Mariah's total from last week, I'd say that there was zero chance I'm afraid.
