I have a feeling that it wouldn't have been a hit if by someone else. Of course it wouldn't. This type of music wouldn't be getting blanket play over Radio 1 and Capital if it wasn't by Rihanna and featuring Drake. Rihanna/Drake is quite the power collab as well. |

It's highly unlikely Work would trouble the top 100 if it had been by a smaller artist. I'm glad it seems to be going down well though - it's great to have urban music high in the charts.

The thing is no one as commercial and mainstream as Rihanna would release a song like Work. It should be applauded she has the guts to release something with patois lyrics and is island sounding, as that is essentially Rihanna.
She could so easily release another Clavin Harris banger but she hasn't done that now for a long time. Her sound and music has evolved and is much more her as a person than generic dance music (though she did that to a top class standard too). Also it is not like Rihanna hasn't had her fair share of under performing songs too, it isn't as if she actually has a big 'stan base' she generally is one of the few artists who the general public will accept and buy into if the deem the music good enough, which evidently people think Work is. It is also why her albums sell slow and steady as she has to convince the general public the album is worthy of their money, she doesn't have a huge built in fanbase who buy any and everything. |

Agree with this, good post. |
