A 40+ strong choir of fire personnel from across the UK, including Cheshire’s Dan Selby, Emily Morris and Matt Lloyd, are making a bid for the Christmas number one to raise money for charity.

The Fire Tones’ cover of the Band Aid classic, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’, is already the bookie’s favourite to be in the top five festive songs this year, with all proceeds from the single being split between The Fire Fighters Charity and the Band Aid Charity Trust.

At the end of October over forty fire and rescue service personnel from across the country descended on the BIMM music college in Birmingham. College principle Anthony Greaves had given them free access to the college’s newly-built recording studio, along with support from student producers. During the 12-hour session, they performed under the watchful eye of seasoned music producer Steve Osborne - whose clients include U2, Placebo, Elbow and the Doves - and vocal arranger Louise Warren, both of whom donated their time for free.

The single, which is high on the list of bookies’ favourites for the Christmas number one slot, is available to download on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon Music, with a cd version available from Amazon, and proceeds are being split evenly between the two charities.

Indeed, x factor final was always lined up with releasing for Xmas week, then in 2011 it was pulled forward a week iirc, that became the new norm and now it's a whole fortnight earlier! (Plus the extra half week as we're tracking Fridays now not Sundays).

Pleased to see she’s promoting more - I was worried she was pinning everything on XF. Might manage another week T40 before disappearing. I’m sure the lack of success with this single will have the record company wondering how the hell to follow it up.

Omg legit this. And none of the performances were good imo either: George I disliked but I think that's more down to the song than the performance, Tom's duet of LALO was a screeching messT and Anne wasn't great vocally at all but was incredible compared to James being completely off-pitch the entirety of that horrendous perofmrnace.

Well, I think a performance of the big hit DOES help the album directly. If he did the new single, that would've given that a chart boost, and then the increased radio play for that would help the album more indirectly I think. He's also selling tickets at the moment.

Ideally he'd have done a medley though.

I am guessing George/the label are gunning for the biggest song of 2018 against One Kiss and God’s Plan. Think it has the potential to catch up by the end of December.

Would have preferred Hold My Girl still. The song is doing well on radio and downloads. It’s the sort of the song that would benefit from a tv performance.

OCC updated the Top 40 of 2018 so far a few days ago, and God's Plan (at 1.52m sales) is still pretty far ahead of Shotgun (at 1.36m). One Kiss is much closer though, if anything's gonna overtake Drake it'll be that song, not George's!

You're right, but when it comes to the EOY chart, older songs benefit more. Shotgun didn't impact as a single until around June, while God's Plan peaked in January and One Kiss impacted from April, so they've had longer to build up sales since they became hits. As I said, if they all came out in the same week, I expect Shotgun would be on higher sales. For context, it would've only left the top 10 a few weeks ago if it weren't for ACR, that's mega impressive!

I think Shotgun was more unlucky to get blocked by Three Lions and In My Feelings on Spotify - it was #2 for a VERY long time. One Kiss peaked higher on daily streams but I would argue Shotgun has been more consistent, the fact it's STILL going strong on sales and streams is pretty incredible, One Kiss wasn't this high at this point in its run.

My point is that If I want to make that point I still can even if it's clearly frustrated you.

One Kiss was no1 for like 9 weeks and it was dominant across all formats including airplay/downloads/streams and as another poster pointed out its streams peaked hugely One various days/weeks. Let's just agree both songs were equally huge I guess.

I'm not frustrated at all and I don't think my post displayed that whatsoever, I was debating with you which is the entire point of this forum, no? You suggested One Kiss was bigger because it was huge across all formats, but so was the song you're comparing it to. That's simply what I was suggesting.

One Kiss had 8 weeks at #1, and God's Plan had 9, but it's interesting to see that while Shotgun "only" had 4 weeks at the top, there were five weeks at #2 in the middle and a further one beforehand - ten weeks in the top 2 and avoiding ACR the whole time is very impressive and I think we can't forget that!

The second duet with James Arthur is the winners single the power of love

It'll go to #1 with a big lead here but I wonder how it'll do on Spotify, especially with all the Christmas songs around it could easily get lost in the mix.

I'm thinking maybe top 5 officially but it'll have to sustain a big iTunes lead all week.

38. Paloma Faith - Silent Night (feat. The Thank You Midwife Choir)
51. West End Does - Where Are You Christmas? (feat. Carrie Hope Fletcher)
105. John Gibbons & Franklin - A Spaceman Came Travelling (feat. Nina Nesbitt)

Posted by: Tedward 4th December 2018, 07:19 PM

Empty Space is probably the best song he's released so far but his voice still gets on my nerves in it- especially the chorus

Rewrite The Stars cover is unforgivable though. I really want to like Anne-Marie as well, but almost everything she's done this year is terrible sad.gif

Posted by: Bjork 4th December 2018, 07:22 PM

Empty space is ok
but his cover of Rewrite the stars with Anne Marie is terrible to say the least

I've only heard the liver version of Power of Love and James Arthur was terrible too, overhanging and shouting all the way

Is Palomas version of silent night on the album rerelease of a seperate single?

Damn this truly will go to number one in January and could end up #1 on iTunes following Norton!

I want it to be Christmas Number one, but mostly because I put a bet on it the day it was released (I got odds of 14-1!)

Is this from the ad? Seems to be a huge amount of old songs on ads that are slowed down to ballads!

Posted by: Bjork 5th December 2018, 10:31 AM

Ane Brun is very good at covers, a few years ago she did an amazing cover of Halo
this is great too

It was actually a lot lower than #50 when I last saw it a couple of weeks ago! The week before Ava took off, she was very low top 100 if in it at all, as when I was tracking SBP, WTPO was always within a few places of it on iTunes!

Posted by: Bjork 5th December 2018, 02:48 PM

it's more of a streaming hit I'd say

Posted by: Christmasteve201 5th December 2018, 05:56 PM

Fake news. Though I wouldn't mind an Ed/Jess Christmas song just to give Jess the Christmas number one. *_

Looks like R1 have played Baz Lurhmann again as he's back at #40.

John Gibbons up to #61 now too. Hope this can scrape an official top 100 position over Christmas.

Tom Grennan on the rise again, what's caused this? I was hoping "Run in the Rain" could (though it might still) do something to give him another hit and close the debut era.

Because the guy who produced it ended up ripping his ears out and bleeding to death so the finished product never came to light, fortunately.
