I feel like the public has a real sympathy for Nicola, although she's not hugely popular, and it could help her to launch her solo career.

She could easily be more popular than Nadine, and probably more "credible" than Cheryl (ie no backlash about her singing, etc.).

I can see her having a success à la Ellie Goulding. Oh and I would love some solo Nicola material wub.gif

Posted by: Lukuzz 16th November 2010, 02:39 PM

I would LOVE a solo Nicola album (although would obviously prefer a Girls Aloud album)

Doubt it will ever materialise though..

Posted by: fxckingfamous 16th November 2010, 06:35 PM

I'd prefer a Kimberley album, and I reckon she'd be the only other member to get any kind of success. She doesn't have the best voice, but she's definitely better than Cheryl and the public love Kimberley as it is.

Posted by: Jack89 16th November 2010, 08:09 PM

^hm, I feel like Kimb is the member the public forget about, whereas the others are in the press much more? She does have that Viva show i guess.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 16th November 2010, 08:50 PM

I could actually see her being the 'Mel C' of Girls Aloud. Decent commercial success, by far the best songs and the most critical acclaim.

Posted by: AltheGreat 16th November 2010, 11:42 PM

Would love a Nicola album. She's my favourite voice of the five.

Yes, me too smile.gif
I want songs that sound like her solo materials in GA's album,
such as'I Say A Prayer for You' and 'It's Magic' heart.gif

Posted by: Silver Rocket 23rd November 2010, 02:38 AM

She's not that good and I can't imagine her being successful solo, mind you I guess it really depends what kind of deal/publicity/backing she gets as that's the essential thing.

Posted by: Marina Hurts 23rd November 2010, 05:51 AM

I've always considered Nicola to be the Siobhan of Girls Aloud. Meaning if she went solo she would create masterpieces but she'd never succeed commercially.

apparently there will be news of Nicola having signed a deal with Universal in tomorrow's NOTW. Exciting smile.gif

I love Nicola. I think she'd make amazing music( and I mean Amazing) but not too sure if she'd be a success. But i'm Behind her all the way!! smile.gif

Posted by: XXXO 16th April 2011, 09:59 PM

It apparently is inspired by Robyn and M.I.A.. I love M.I.A. (Robyn too, but to a much lesser degree) so I'm definitely gonna check out Nicolas stuff to see what it's like!! Hopefully it's better than Nadines.. (which was disappointing) and I have no doubt it's better than Cheryl's solo stuff.

Posted by: gooddelta 16th April 2011, 10:49 PM

This is definitely one of my most anticipated albums of the year. Nadine always had the strongest voice for me, but Nicola has the most interesting/unique, and you feel like she'd make the most exciting album certainly. I love the fragile quality to her voice, she's made so many of GA's songs somehow haunting and much deeper.

I agree, I loved her section in Call the Shots! Made the song for me.

Posted by: Liаm 17th April 2011, 11:01 AM

Her album is in my anticipated list too wub.gif She actually has my fave GA voice ohmy.gif Nicola > Nadine > Cheryl > Sarah > Kimberley

I love Nadine's, Cheryl's (yeah I went there!) and Sarah's voice too though heart.gif Cheryl makes the best music thus far, wonder if Nicola can match the brilliance of 3W and MLR?

Posted by: Simon. 17th April 2011, 03:29 PM

Sounds promising after hearing who shes inspired by, was confused to how she would sound.

Posted by: Arrs 18th April 2011, 10:09 AM

I'll be very happy even if we get album full of 'It's Magic's. wub.gif

Posted by: ukchartstatsfan 21st April 2011, 09:50 AM

Do you think she'lll do better than Nadine?

Posted by: Jaack Sykes 21st April 2011, 02:26 PM

Well it'll be very embarrassing for her if she doesn't laugh.gif

Posted by: Lukuzz 24th April 2011, 11:18 AM

Not like it would be hard to beat Nadine. But considering she is probably the least popular member from the general public just knowing her as 'the ugly ginger one' It will be hard for her to do well imo. Hopefully the song will be KILLER though and she will blow people away and all the dickheads will finally realize just how talented she is!

Nicola Loon Here!

Nadine shot herself right in the foot with the Tesco deal. ANd the alienating GA fans, and the life and times in LA, and the BRIT awards snub, and the Kimberley clanger... and so on laugh.gif

Posted by: Casey__ 2nd May 2011, 04:00 PM

SO excited for this, really hope it comes soon. Nicola has always been my favourite, since Popstars: The Rivals was on TV.

Glad she's going down a more interesting, less poppy route. As someone mentioned Siobhan Donaghy, if this album is even HALF as incredible as 'Ghosts' then she'll have an amazing album.

Posted by: Lukuzz 2nd May 2011, 04:02 PM

Single is out on Friday!!

Posted by: -Jay- 6th May 2011, 02:45 AM

The Sun confirms the album title is 'Cinderella's Eyes' and that it's due in Autumn!

Posted by: fxckingfamous 6th May 2011, 09:50 AM

This is AMAZING. The best title for a Girls Aloud related project everrrrrrr.

Posted by: Lukuzz 6th May 2011, 09:52 AM

I've pre ordered it from her website, its says expected release date: October 3rd. biggrin.gif

Posted by: fxckingfamous 6th May 2011, 09:55 AM

I reaaaaally can't wait, it's gonna be amazing <3

Posted by: Hayzayy 6th May 2011, 09:56 AM

5 more months to wait before we get the album then cry.gif

I dunno how I'm gonna deat with the wait ! laugh.gif

I just need the single to tide me over!!

Posted by: Tabloid Darling. 6th May 2011, 10:10 AM

Me too. Is that the official single cover though, I don't rly like the font haha.

Posted by: Jack 6th May 2011, 10:25 AM

I can see her having Diana type success ... I'd think Radio 1 will support her hugely.

Posted by: THEO. 6th May 2011, 04:04 PM

Title is WONDERFUL! A shame that there's such a long wait until we get it, but that's her birthday I think, so that's sweet of her.

So true laugh.gif

I can see her doing really well. She is well known from Girls Aloud, If the single is decent enough then she has a chance of success! I really hope this does well.
Love the album title wub.gif

I can echo Jack, I agree she could have similar success to Diana Vickers. Even if she does I hardy doubt she will complain!

Posted by: gooddelta 6th May 2011, 06:48 PM

Ridiculously excited about this. It sounds like it will avoid the general 'budget' feel of Nadine's solo material, and the generic US sound of some of Cheryl's. I love the fact that it sounds typically British and the snippets of the lyrics posted on PJ sound brilliant - she was always my second favourite GA member after Nadine, who to me was the whole package. Vocally though, Nicola was always the one I'd be most interested in solo material by and it's excellent that it's happening and all sounding great! She'll be the Mark Owen of Girls Aloud (respectable pop garnering respectable success) to Cheryl's Robbie Williams (not the lead singer but a huge megastar alone) and Nadine's Gary Barlow (flop lead singer drama.gif)

Posted by: THEO. 3rd June 2011, 12:44 PM

Here's Nicola's explanation of the album's title, plus some lyrics from the title track:

QUOTE
4. The title of the album is ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’. We like it a lot! Can you explain it please?

Cinderella’s Eyes is a song on my album that I wrote about a year ago… It’s about a girl called Sleeping Beauty who wakes up and wonders what life has instore for her… “Will she meet any baddies or goodies and will she lay with any Princes or Hoodies”… She asks Cinderella “Are you happy with your fella and your nice home”, and tells girls “They have to do it for themselves as cards are so randomly dealt.” I think it represents my views on happy endings..

Posted by: Lukuzz 6th June 2011, 04:33 PM

YEYYY she tweeted me on her Q&A a second ago, she told me she has co-wrote every track on the album biggrin.gif

Posted by: Lukuzz 6th June 2011, 05:33 PM

Also she said there is a track called 'Bite Me' on the album (which she said is her favourite at the moment) And Porcelain Heart WILL be on the album!!

Posted by: David John 6th June 2011, 05:40 PM

I had a feeling Nic would be co writing.

Posted by: THEO. 7th June 2011, 12:33 PM

A new song confirmed; "Sticks And Stones", which Nicola wrote over an Eminem beat. Interesting...

Posted by: David John 7th June 2011, 02:25 PM

I like porcelain heart. Glad its made the album

Posted by: THEO. 10th June 2011, 08:05 PM

A new demo from the album, "Dance In the Rain", has leaked. You can listen http://aloudsound.net/view/1989/nicola-roberts-dance-in-the-rain-new-demo-song/. It sounds alright, although it definitely needs improving to live up to "Beat of My Drum" and "Porcelain Heart".

Got this from a poster on SIN:

I am eager for her t4 on the beach appearance. That will show her as an artist to the public.

Posted by: Hayzayy 11th June 2011, 11:08 AM

I love "Dance the rain" (and not "Dance in the rain" tongue.gif ) ! It doesn't even sound that demo-ish to me !

I really like "Lucky day" too, judging from the LQ videos of her live performance.

This album is shaping up to be AMAZING.

Posted by: Matt Aloud 11th June 2011, 11:16 AM

Lucky Day was amazing at Newcastle heart.gif I want the album now!

Well its not a given is it?

Girls Can't Catch got dropped after their 2nd single

Posted by: David John 15th June 2011, 05:56 PM

But girls can't catch were in a different scenario. Bearing in mind that Nicola is from one of Britain's top girlbands so she already has exposure, an established fan base and the fact people know the name Nicola Roberts.

Girls can't catch were unknown to the british public and had to work hard to build a fan base.

Posted by: THEO. 8th July 2011, 09:35 PM

I don't mind that artwork, but it's pretty unlikely that they'd use a photo where her face is covered if they're trying to establish her as an artist. Loving the length of the tracklist though! But it would seem a bit odd to include both of the B-sides, so it might not be real...?

"Porcelain Heart" isn't a bside.

Posted by: THEO. 8th July 2011, 09:40 PM

It's a digital B-side. Just like 'Single Ladies' was to 'If I Were a Boy' for Beyoncé.

This is really shaping up to be the best album of the year.

My mini-Nicola Roberts EP is already the best album of the year :

01. Beat of my drum
02. Porcelain heart
03. Disco, blisters and a comedown
04. Dance in the rain
05. Luck day (live)
Bonuses :
06. It's magic
07. I say a prayer for you

MASSIVE NITPICK ALERT. I really wish this was called Cinderella Eyes. Cinderella's Eye just looks ugly. Also, can't believe they didn't use this photo for the cover:

Posted by: THEO. 23rd August 2011, 09:58 AM

To answer your two points, it's Cinderella's Eyes, and they used the photo (presumably) because she's acting as Cinderella in it. tongue.gif

Would Cinderella Eyes even make sense?

And I think the cover is perfection.

It doesn't need to make much sense, Eye's just randomly irks me for absolutely no reason. Haha.

Anyway, love all the artwork for this album.

'I' is SO Metronomy! I love it.

"Sticks + Stones" is without a doubt... her best song (so far).

Posted by: Jonjo 15th September 2011, 02:50 PM

After listening to the album preview on iTunes, I am no longer awaiting this album. Her voice gets really irritating if you hear it too often. There's some sort of shrill to it. sad.gif

I'm not sure how I feel about 'Sticks + stones' just yet. I think it'll probably grow, but it's definitely the least instant of all the songs I've heard so far. The lyrics sound a bit shoehorned in, and don't really flow very well, especially during the middle eight.

Brilliant performance, she seems so much more confident in this than any others I've seen her in.

Yo-Yo wub.gif Really love it, so good and not too far away from Girls Aloud's material! I is a bit disappoiting though, kinda dull sad.gif Loving Take A Bite too, quite old school!

Posted by: HeartRateRapid 22nd September 2011, 08:35 PM

'Take a Bite' is easily the best thing I've heard from this era thus far. Excellent production, chorus and that rap!

In all honesty I'm a bit disappointed in the project as a whole, something just hasn't clicked. A lack of energy in the music? Personality? I'm not sure but I ENDEVOUR to get to the bottom of it.

Posted by: dannjohn3 23rd September 2011, 08:47 AM

"Gladiator" is my favourite song.

Posted by: Lukuzz 23rd September 2011, 10:11 AM

After first listen -

Porcelain Heart - 11
Sticks + Stones - 10
Lucky Day - 10
Beat Of My Drum - 10
Yo-Yo - 10
Gladiator - 10
Take A Bite - 9.5
Cinderella's Eyes - 9
Say It Out Loud - 8
Fish Out Of Water - 8
I - 7.5
Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime - 7

Brilliant album. Every track a 7 or above after 1 listen, but I think some of the will grow. Need to go listen more!

Posted by: Cremey 23rd September 2011, 10:28 AM

On my first listen now, loving 'Fish Out of Water'.

Posted by: Aled. 23rd September 2011, 03:11 PM

On the whole, VERY impressed. I had high expectations for this album and I'd say they've pretty much been reached. 'I', 'Take A Bite' and 'Yo-Yo' would be some of my highlights from the non-singles.

'Fish Out Of Water' is actually the only one that's failing to really click with me for now. But definitely the best album from any solo Girls Aloud project to date.

Posted by: MarthaJonesFan 23rd September 2011, 03:28 PM

Not gonna listen till Monday, but I have listened to I, Yo-Yo and Take A Bite, which are all AMAZING! Especially the latter.

Posted by: Davidson 23rd September 2011, 03:41 PM

Beat Of My Drum - 6.5
Lucky Day - 8.0
Yo-Yo - 9.0
Cinderella's Eyes - 9.5
Porcelian Heart - 10.0
I - 7.5
Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes - 8.0
Say It Out Loud - 9.5
Gladiator - 9.5
Fish Out Of Water - 6.5
Take A Bite - 9.5
Sticks + Stones - 11.0

Fabulous album. Far better than the singles for me, I like Lucky Day and Beat Of My Drum was good but I find it really boring now, there are far better songs on the album than the singles. Nicola has proves, despite not having the best voice, she is a brilliant songwriter (expecially on 'I' and 'Sticks & Stones') and she can make fantastic melodies. I love the production on the album aswell. I wish they had put Dance In The Rain on the album though, instead of mabye 'Fish Out Of Water' which I am finding just alright, it seems to bringing down the amazing second half of the album.

Such a strong album! Will definitely be buying this on Monday.
'Take a Bite' is my favourite at the moment, it'll hopefully be a single at some point.
The rap is amazing, love how her accent really comes through in it... 'they're gonna eat all their words, they're talking absolute shit'. Amazing. And that INTRO! Think I might just have a new obsession.

Lucky Day: 9.5
Yo-Yo: 9.5

I: 9
Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime: 9
Say It Out Loud: 9.5

A very strong album, my favourite of the year I'd say!

Posted by: THEO. 26th September 2011, 06:41 PM

Such a good album after just a couple of listens! I'd say as an album, I prefer it to both of Cheryl and Nadine's sets, but I think Cheryl definitely chose better singles than Nicola has so far. My favourite track is 'i' - I love how completely different to the rest of the album it is, yet it's still full of her personality. 'Gladiator' is also very good; it reminds me of another song, but I can't remember what at this moment. I'd list the rest that I think are very good, but that takes up the majority of the album! I'll do a proper rate after a couple more listens smile.gif

Nicola's album is basically better than 95% of the top 100, so there is no obvious need to compare it to Cheryl. Both could be successful in their own way, especially since their music is SO different.
Plus they're like best friends and I'm sure Cheryl would be more than happy to share her sales numbers with Nicola laugh.gif

'I' is still growing one me - I feel like I should love it but I don't quite yet. 'Fish Out of Water' is the better of the two Joseph Mount productions imo.

Yes but the whole "why Cheryl is having success and Nicola hasn't ?!?!" conversation is pointless. The reasons are quite obvious and anyway one flopping isn't linked in any way to the other one having success.

Cheryl was successful because she was extremely popular and her music was perfectly fitting with the market, and she had killer singles.
Nicola isn't popular among "the masses" and her music doesn't seem to please the radio programmers. I'd love Nicola to be number 1 for weeks, but it's just not happening, so no need to blame Cheryl, Nadine, Sarah, or any other person related to Nicola.

Anyway, my roommate kept going on how ridiculous Nicola is, that she's annoying and ugly, and that her music is crap blah blah blah. I went to see her live at G-A-Y and kept hyping her around the house. He downloaded her album and said it was actually very good, not that commercial after all.

It's all because of Cheryl's profile why she gets success and playlisted etc, her songs sound like recycled rejected demos ultimately (well, most of them).

Nicola's album is great as expected, strangely I find the first two and the last two to be the best points of the album, 'Fish Out Of Water' is the only really bad track and I'd rather it was replaced with 'Disco, Blisters And A Comedown'. I think it'll be about #23/#24 by Sunday but it doesn't matter, the true quality shines through and that's what's important here.

Posted by: Lukuzz 28th September 2011, 10:18 PM

As long as it charts higher than the two singles I'll be relatively happy.

In all fairness I never even thought she would ever release an album, and even when they announced it I thought something would go wrong and with both singles pretty much flopping I thought there was a chance they could scrap it, so I'm just over the moon I actually have a Nicola album in my collection, and the fact that it is amazing is just a bonus.

Posted by: Tom *.* Kay 29th September 2011, 10:26 AM

THIS. Seriously, 5 years ago, who thought we would ever be able to say the sentence "Nicola Roberts has a solo album out"?

Fantastic album start to finish. Even if it doesn't chart or sell well she can always be proud of it and we will always have a great pop album that thought and effort was put into which is rare in these times.

So it's maybe not as brilliant as I originally thought, but there are a lot of very good tracks, with just a few fillers, for me. 'i' is probably my favourite track, although 'sticks + stones' is very quickly growing on me!

Apart from the soggy middle and the horrendous 'Fish Out Of Water', it's a pretty good album! I would've said I was under-whelming if it hadn't been for the last two tracks! wub.gif Say It Out Loud is another of my favourites which seems to be going under the radar on here.

#17 début this week! I'm so pleased that she managed to stay top 20, and hopefully the sales will be strong(ish, at least; all album sales are pretty poor overall unfortunately.)

Posted by: Liаm 2nd October 2011, 04:46 PM

Not bad - I expecting it to fall out of the top 20 tbh. I doubt sales will be too good though unfortunately sad.gif

Posted by: Aphrodite 2nd October 2011, 04:53 PM

Im delighted it stayed top 20, i had a fear it would drop out and land at #21 today, i would say sales will be 7,000 maximum, but least she has a top 20 album to her name now no matter what happens, she is only the 2nd member to manage that so far so well done to her.

I've never been a huge Nicola fan but holy moly. This is eaaaasily the best thing to come from Girls Aloud or anything related to them. It's so mature aswell, and it's sad she's not selling millions because the album isr eally special. Porcelain Heart I'm bored of, hence the low score and I is a bit meh, but asides from those two I'm in actual awe. This is gonna go down as one of my favourite albums ever I think.

Posted by: Lukuzz 2nd October 2011, 09:01 PM

Over the moon with the album being #17 so glad its top 20. Hope it can at least manage a 2nd week in the Top 40.

Posted by: Slick 3rd October 2011, 10:26 AM

Top 20 for the album is much better than I was expecting, I'm so glad. I hope it doesn't do a Lucky Day and bomb out of the charts next week.

I've just got this and will endeavour to listen to it asap. I really like the stuff I've heard so far - if the album's good I might be on my way to becoming a bit of a NicRob stan.

Posted by: Silver Rocket 3rd October 2011, 12:40 PM

This definitely outperformed my expectations, well done to her!

Posted by: Aphrodite 3rd October 2011, 02:11 PM

It sold 8,473 in its opening week, this is slightkly higher than i expected as i thought 7.5 at maximum so its good it sold better, my only worry is will the album plummet this week, i have a feeling it wont be even top 40, so i guess if it managed to stay top 40 this week it would out do my expectations for yet another week.

Took AGES for this to click with me! At first I thought omg it's really really bad, her voice grates and it's all self pity rubbish, I didn't go to the Liverpool signing because I hated it that much :-( My friend made me keep listening and thank god I did! While I can't see me ever liking Everybody's (Baby D was far better!), Fish Out Of Water (wth?), and i (jesus!); some are amazing, esp Gladiator, Say It Out Loud, and Yo-yo :-)

SO pleased, she was always my fave I was obsessed with her. It's my least fave GA related album though :-(

Completely agree, 'Say It Out Loud' seems to be getting reasonably low scores on here compared to the rest of the album, when its one of the best for me. I love the instrumental just before the last chorus, so gorgeous.

Going through my first listen of the album now.

07.0| 'Beat Of My Drum'
07.5| 'Lucky Day'
08.0| 'Yo-Yo'
07.5| 'Cinderella's Eyes'
07.0| 'Porcelain Heart'
06.0| 'I'
07.0| 'Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime'
09.0| 'Say It Out Loud'
08.0| 'Gladiator'
08.0| 'A Fish Out Of Water'
07.5| 'Take A Bite'
08.5| 'Sticks + Stones

I've not made up my mind about 'I'. I honestly don't know if I like it or not... Maybe with more listens I can form some sort of opinion. All in all though, it's a decent album. My favourite is 'Say It Out Loud'. 'Sticks + Stones' is very nice and I can see it growing for a little while. I'm not going to hammer this album though, I feel her voice will grate on me alot if I did. But right now, it's a strong debut album.

It's a disapointing drop for the album, but if 'Yo-yo' can even manage some interest it might help the album get another week or two in the top 75.

I don't think the main issue is promotion. She performed both "Run the world" and "Lucky day" on every TV show she could, and they both still flopped.
The album has got rave reviews from all the press, and still it doesn't help her in the slightest.

The main issue really is airplay. You can't expect people to buy an album when they haven't heard a single song off it on the radio. sad.gif

I think you mean Beat Of My Drum. It's weird now you mention it though, RTW(G) had wall to wall airplay, and BOMD had almost none, despite being very similar.

I mean during album week, she did two CD signings. I know she promoted the singles at some opportunities. I just feel she could've done a lot more during the album release week.

Posted by: Aphrodite 12th October 2011, 04:37 PM

I wonder where the album will chart this week, I hope it doesn't fall out of the top 200, even if she could stay within the top 200 for a few weeks it would help get nearer to having 20,000 sales.

She's going to be on the Alan Titchmarsh Show on 9th November. Hopefully to perform the new single, as well as flogging this dead horse of a project.

Posted by: Silver Rocket 1st November 2011, 09:17 PM

It was always pretty obvious this whole project was never gonna set the world alight, I'm just glad she made an album she can truly be proud of and shows what she was really capable of (which as a HUGE Girls Aloud fan, I never even had any idea).

Posted by: ThePensmith 20th January 2012, 01:52 PM

This was, bar Bruno Mars' and Will Young's albums, one of my favourite albums of last year. I always said Nicola would produce the most sound solo album out of all of Girls Aloud - I loved Cheryl and Nadine's as well, don't get me wrong - but for me I just knew Nicola would come up with something that you could tell was 'her' when you heard it, especially with the lyrics, I love the lyrics in 'I' and also 'Sticks & Stones' because I feel I can identify with them so easily, as I think everyone can who's been in the situations she talks about, about not being accepted or people who hold pointless grudges over things that won't end the world tomorrow. And in a way I kind of like it that this album hasn't been like a huge commercial success like '3 Words' or 'Messy Little Raindrops' were for Cheryl, because for me it's one of those albums I can easily share with a friend and I can feel like it's my little discovery I'm passing on to other people. I think I must have played it to about 6 of my friends (without telling them who it was) since it's been out and when I've told them it's Nicola they've been really surprised, and have said how different and unique it is. Even if she never makes another album on her own she should be proud of making this record, because I know I would. Team Ginge FTW!

Posted by: Aphrodite 24th January 2012, 01:24 AM

I wonder what the album total sales are, im sure it would picked up a few sales in the high selling christmas market so hopefully it has passed 30,000 sales.

Posted by: -Jay- 27th January 2012, 03:41 AM

I'd say it's probably still lower than 20,000 at this stage. It probably would have needed to have been within the Top 200 at the very least over Christmas to go anywhere near 30k.

Posted by: Aphrodite 27th January 2012, 08:18 PM

Thats disapointing, i wonder has she sold more than Nadine managed though?

Posted by: billy. 20th February 2012, 11:30 PM

It makes me SO sad that this flopped. It's honestly one of the best albums I've heard in recent years, and I think in a way the Girls Aloud tag actually harmed her.

With Cheryl & Nadine it helped (well not so much re Nads) cause they were kind of making throwaway pop music, whereas Nicola was alot more credible than both (rightly or wrongly), and had acclaim from NME and the like. Had she not have been a Girls Alouder I think she may have done better.

"I didn't mark the 5 years last year because with my own weirdness I wasn't in the place. But today is 6 years since I released Cinderella's eyes. Time flies when you're cocooning. When I listen to the record now all I can see is how much I was kicking out. Its bonkers! Opinion & taste is subjective but to me the vocal is over cooked, I pushed the mix till the engines almost blew (I still stand by the lyrics I wrote though 🔥lol) all because I think I was on a mission to push it as far as I could, maybe a rebellious thing, I don't know. It's a snap shot of what my environment had been, growing up in a girl band and making ruleless pop music with the girls for so long it was always going to be the product that came out first. I'm so proud of the album and what I created for that time. The thing I will always take with me with this record is how people reacted to it and how with sticks + stones in particular (which is actually hard for me to listen too), how they felt like they could relate to it. That's all you want from music and for that it's such a special moment in time for me. "

Cinderella's Eyes re-entered at #42 in the download chart on 21st February, its third week in the Top 100! https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/albums-downloads-chart/20200221/7003/ - its download chart run is: 13-99-out-42-out

The Greatest Showman soundtrack sold 175 downloads at #41, and Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix 1 soundtrack sold 165 downloads at #43, so Nicola therefore sold between those figures.

"Beat of My Drum" is a song by British recording artist Nicola Roberts. It was released on 2 June 2011, by Polydor Records, as the lead single from Roberts' debut solo album, Cinderella's Eyes (2011). The song was simultaneously released with the on air on sale method, receiving no prior promotion.

So strange to look back now; with this song being one of the first OA/OS releases. Don't think it was the best decision in the end, as I am sure it would have charted better with pre-orders and stuff, but oh well.

I seriously cannot believe this was released 10 years ago sad.gif I still remember my huge excitement for the launch of her solo career, like it was yesterday... (Tbh I'm always feeling in denial that 2011 was 10 years ago, it just doesn't feel right!)

I can totally understand why this song is divisive, but for me it was instant love. It's such an in your face and a kind of weird bop - just perfect for a solo Girls Aloud member.

Nicola really walked so others could run re: on air/on sale cry.gif It was a huge risk to launch a brand new solo career with a method that hadn't yet been embraced by the public. To a lesser extent I think it started off The Saturdays' On You Radar era off on the wrong foot - I'm sure Notorious would have gone Top 5 had it been held back.

I'm going to go off on this tangent now, but honestly, that period of 2011-14ish was super frustrating as a UK fan of music. Having to wait weeks while other countries got it instantaneously... I was always yearning for the UK industry and consumers to catch up with the rest of the world, but we just never did so in the sales era... we needed streaming to fully bring about the change. Having said this, I do have contradictory feelings because I do have nostalgia for the physicals/download era and how the held back releases did help guarantee a string of Top 10s for many artists, something that is quite a rarity these days. As a listener I'm happy with instantaneous music, but it did lead to the charts becoming less enjoyable for me.

10 years... its a shame she recorded more solo music but didn't bother releasing.

This in my opinion was an amazing solo album and I wish she'd released more music. Nicola is without a doubt my fave member as well sad.gif

Yeah, I really wish they hadn't done the OA/OS method with 'Beat of My Drum'. I really think that scuppered its chances and could have been way more successful otherwise. sad.gif

That would assume that Radio One (and other stations) would've been on board to play Beat of My Drum during the weeks leading up to it. You could also argue by releasing it OA/OS she took full advantage of the solo hype. Remember, none of the other three members whose first name didn't start with "C" had any luck with getting airplay for their projects. For all you know it could've also done way worse if they had waited five-six weeks before releasing it.

Posted by: dannjohn 4th June 2021, 10:37 AM

The oa/os theory is always such nonsense. The held back release for ‘lucky day’ did nothing. ‘Beat of my Drum’ was just a song that didn’t seem to click with the general public.

Posted by: dannjohn 4th June 2021, 10:38 AM

I just wish her & the label didn’t have the idea of her being the next big pop girl & had her as this indie-pop style singer that toured, didn’t really have hits but had a large enough audience

I feel like 'Beat of My Drum' could have been a fair bit bigger, although perhaps nothing else which is why 'Lucky Day' flopped. It had a fairly decent chart run, so it obviously did connect on some level but obviously limping in at #27 because of its release method isn't gonna encourage support for it from anywhere.

I suppose we'll never know now though, so it's pointless speculating.

Posted by: Chemistry 4th June 2021, 11:05 AM

I don't think Beat.. would have been a big hit either way, as it was definitely a bit too 'out there' for it to smash but I do believe it would have gone at least top 15 with a heldback release. Lucky Day probably didn't get a lot of support after Beat.. underperforming so it makes sense that one also flopped. I know we'll never know, but I always find it interesting to have these 'what could have been' discussions.

Posted by: dannjohn 4th June 2021, 11:19 AM

I always thought BOMD was a great debut single but much more on the promo single... i always thought a quicker follow-up to keep the hype would have been better. Waiting several months for 'Lucky Day' seemed mad. I'd have had it out in July.

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th June 2021, 11:31 AM

10 years is crazy, I remember the first time I heard Beat of My Drum so clearly! At first I wasn't sold on it but it quickly won me over and I was obsessed, definitely one of the best solo GA songs. Cinderella's Eyes is still such an incredible album too. Ugh, I miss 2011! laugh.gif

I think the chart run of Beat of My Drum indicates that a concentrated held back release would have fared better than Lucky Day. I agree with Chemistry that Top 15 might have been feasible.

27-64-88-145-76-50-59-84-96-162-190-out-187-out <- #50 is when the CD single came out.

Compared with Lucky Day...

40-120-out

Beat of My Drum only had one CD single (a few copies were unsigned, but I think the majority of copies were signed). Despite Lucky Day having two CDs (one was signed) and a 7" vinyl, it comparatively did far worse, and it's no real surprise because it was dead on arrival on TV/Radio, and the promo wasn't as good as Drum's.

Beat Of My Drum
01. 12/06 - #27 - 12,851 sales
02. 19/06 - #64 - 4,362 sales
03. 26/06 - #88 - 2,763 sales
04. 03/07 - #145 - 1,761 sales
05. 10/07 - #76 - 3,658 sales
06. 17/07 - #50 - 6,664 sales <- CD Single Release Week
^ Total sales at this point: 32,059.
Obviously we can't assume that every sale up to then would still have been achieved with a held back release... but on 17th July, #11 sold 25,256 and #15 sold 20,541, and I really don't think it's out of the question that Beat of My Drum would have accumulated decent pre-orders during the promotional period and sold enough for Top 15. #10 sold 31,619. The thing is, Radio and TV might not have been put off by the immediate "under-performance" position of #27 and given it some better support in the run up to release. They actually supported it for the first week or two, and then it dropped off completely by the time the CD single was released. Of course I'm speculating, but you just never know what could have been with the traditional held back releases that most artists were still doing.

07. 24/07 - #59 - 4,882 sales
08. 31/07 - #84 - 3,233 sales
09. 07/08 - #96 - 2,581 sales
10. 14/08 - #162 - 1,397 sales
11. 21/08 - #190 - 1,237 sales
^I don't have the sales from when it was #187 on 2nd Oct '11, presumably around 1,300 though.

Lucky Day sold 7,256 to get to #40. Week 2's figure is unknown but I would estimate between 1,800 and 1,900 - that was the same week that Cinderella's Eyes charted at #17 with 8,473 first week sales.

Have to admit I’m a bit disappointed by the beige border too… I feel like light green would have looked better if they had to have a border. How interesting that they apparently don’t have a high enough quality image of an album that only came out 10 years ago!! Wow! I've gone a bit wild and ordered both the standard vinyl and the deluxe double vinyl, plus a green cassette. If I was being at all sensible I probably should have settled for just the deluxe double vinyl, but I felt compelled to have the standard too because it features the original artwork. I have at least been slightly restrained and not ordered the other cassettes! kink.gif

Plastic Pop has stated that the demos are exclusive to vinyl and won't be released elsewhere, which is unfortunate because vinyl rips aren't ideal, but nevertheless I'm super excited to hear them.

I think the new artwork used on the deluxe vinyl, by the artist Bryony Fripp, looks fantastic. wub.gif The border used for the standard - it's growing on me - of course ideally it would have been the original artwork fully on the cover, but it seems that Nicola wanted it this way (and perhaps the original artwork wasn't available in a high enough quality? Kind of surprising when the album is from 2011, but maybe that's the reason for a border?).

The release date is currently "TBC" so I'm very curious when they'll all be ready.

Posted by: Chemistry 29th October 2021, 05:27 AM

This is even more than I was hoping for! Such a well prepared release, and how exciting to see we are getting new songs!? Such a shame they won't be available on streaming services though. I'm still not sure which versions to go for, so need to think about that today.

Writing Lucky Day with Martina was so much fun! Channeling sassy and retro made for a cute moment coming up with the ‘Mwah Mwah Mwah Mwah’ and ‘Boom Boom Baby’. I’ve always loved this original demo but we felt the direction was to different as the second single to follow ‘Beat Of My Drum’ so we straightened out the production on it a little. We tried to make it more radio friendly and they didn’t play it anyway! The motto here is, create what you want not what you think people will like. The right people will find it. Grateful for how much time Dragonette dedicated to me that year while making the album. ♥️

The new songs are a great addition to a phenomenal album. I can see why they didn't make the final tracklist - obviously difficult to judge when they aren't fully produced - but they're great bonus additions for a second disc and it's so good to hear Nicola's voice on new(ish) music for the first time in SO long! wub.gif Heart Racing and Crash are my faves of the new songs, alongside Fix Me and Memory of You of course heart.gif

Thanks, I’ll find out if I got a new job this week. If I do I’ll get it as a celebration present!

"Shipping from 01/07"

Finally!

Great it’s finally sniping for those that ordered it.

Received my copies yesterday! biggrin.gif

Will be interesting to see how it does in the chart (I don't have particular expectations for the main Top 200, but let's hope for nice positions in the sales / physicals / vinyl charts).

It has actually already charted this week; #8 on the British Vinyl charts.

Oh yes! I hadn't noticed that. A bit of a shame that the information was submitted a week early. Last week was Glastonbury week which had a few boosted albums. This upcoming week is relatively quieter, so perhaps Cinderella's Eyes could have got some better positions next week. Oh well!

#8 - Vinyl
#27 - Scottish
#29 - Physical
#35 - Sales

I haven't seen any sales data for Friday's chart, but I saw Thursday's midweeks. Nicola wasn't in the Top 200 on Thursday (675 to be midweek #200), though there's a chance that Nicola's data hadn't been submitted at that stage.

In the vinyl chart, #7 is Soccer Mommy and #9 is Machine Gun Kelly. They'd sold 749 vinyl and 656 vinyl respectively in Thursday's mids.

In the physical chart, #28 is Arooj Aftab and #30 is Tommaso/Po/Arrivabeni. In Thursday's midweeks they'd sold 735 copies and 688 copies respectively. Machine Gun Kelly at #31 had sold 710 copies in Thursday's mids. Based on this, we can deduce that Cinderella's Eyes sold more than 710 copies last week, given that Nicola is ahead of Machine Gun Kelly in this chart!

In the sales chart, #34 is Machine Gun Kelly [Thursday - 737 sales] and #36 is Def Leppard [Thursday - 636 sales]

The person behind Plastic Pop wrote this on Popjustice on Saturday:

"The integration between our e-commerce and distribution failed so I’m having to shipping notices manually. The orders have all be sent now and tracking should be sent separately so check junk mail. etc."

Manual shipping will delay so many dispatches.
Very frustrating job.

Thanks, me too. I love the original album and b-sides, so I’m just hoping the ‘new’ demos are good.

Posted by: Rodent-boy 25th October 2022, 01:25 PM

I am *finally* listening to the extra tracks after always spinning the regular version! (Oops!)

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 25th October 2022, 02:03 PM

Are you enjoying them?

Posted by: Run_For_Cover 25th October 2022, 08:19 PM

I just got around to listening to them on Friday.

I liked Crash plus the three b-sides from the singles. The other 6 were all ok but I can see why they didn’t make the album. Still happy I got it though.

Posted by: -Jay- 25th October 2022, 11:57 PM

I found some of the Behind tracks to be growers. I actually ended up preferring Heart Racing, So Damn Right and Tomorrow over Crash (which I feel got the most attention at first due to it being Track 1, but eventually other songs caught my attention more).

Posted by: Run_For_Cover 26th October 2022, 08:34 AM

That’s great to hear. I’ll certainly have to give the songs repeated listens.

Posted by: Rodent-boy 26th October 2022, 12:48 PM

I like a lot of these extra tracks. The voice control is far better! I’d easily swap a chunk of these for the main album!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 24th November 2022, 02:37 PM

Id agree some of these are better than tracks that made the actual album itself.

Posted by: StupidLove 24th November 2022, 05:14 PM

Where can I hear the new tracks/tracks that have been recently released?

Posted by: dannjohn 24th November 2022, 07:05 PM

Their all on youtube
