Hey guys and welcome to the new and reformed FilmClub where we are hoping this will become a permanent fixture and the new rules (we'll count em soon) will get more of you interested in participating <3

FilmClub: The 2017 New Rules Version
1) No more Rabbit sessions, it was too unflexible to work the FilmClub around Rabbit/what days people were free. However if someone has time during the course of the week and wants to host a rabbit session for the film, feel free to do so!

2) This filmclub will be much more flexible. Each film will have a week time period so you will have from Monday to Sunday to watch the film and post your thoughts here & you can watch the film whenever you want whenever you have time! This gives you 7 days (instead of just the usual one sessino) & also means you don't have to watch on a certain day/time like you did with the previous FilmClub. Then after watching please post your thoughts here and hopefully this will lead to discussions.

3) On that note, this thread will be for general discussion for any ideas, suggestions & feedback you have for FilmClub and for choosing the films for next week (the poll will be regularly updated, I think it should work if I delete the previous poll each week and add a new question after!)

4) Each week will consist of a poll of six films circling around a certain theme (e.g. genre, new releases, director, a certain actor, Oscar winners) and the film that wins the poll will be the film chosen for FilmClub. The poll will be put up each Friday so the film for next week is chosen over a couple of days

5) All films for FilmClub will either be on Netflix or Amazon Prime so this will make it easier for you to check out the film you are watching! If you don't have either/one of them and the film selected is on that site, then there's always places online etc that the films can be found kink.gif

Hopefully this'll reach a larger base of people now its a lot more flexible and please post if you'll be interested in this! <3

Week #1: Horror
To kick off October, we will be having a horror theme cos of course Halloween occurs this month! (I have decided the themes for October and after this month is done/if this is successful then you guys can start suggesting themes from October!)

Films to choose from:
Orphan (Amazon Prime)
The Descent (Netflix)
The Exorcist (Amazon Prime)
The Gallows (Amazon Prime)
You're Next (Netflix)
Zombieland (Netflix)

Posted by: UltraReputation 7th October 2017, 01:44 AM

My vote is for The Exorcist! I've been meaning to watch it for AGES and this feels like a perfect opportunity.

Really hope this attempt succeeds as I rly feel this could be something pretty fab for the site in terms of activity and discussion!

Posted by: WitchHaus 7th October 2017, 09:06 AM

The Exorcist. Greatest horror film ever made for me (note, not the scariest horror film but the best for all bit stands for, deals with and executes)

Posted by: Sonia Fowler 7th October 2017, 09:08 AM

Zombieland for me, I have seen it but don't know much about the other horrors laugh.gif

Excited for this though!

Posted by: Severin 7th October 2017, 10:26 AM

Has to be The Exorcist - I mean, if yo're gonna do Horror do the best one.

Beyond that Zombieland, You're Next and The Descent are all great

Posted by: Josh! 7th October 2017, 11:03 AM

Gone for The Exorcist too! I'll probably turn it off halfway through due to being petrified but it feels like a classic film that I probably should see at some point.

Posted by: UltraReputation 8th October 2017, 04:01 PM

This will be starting tomorrow so last chance to get your votes in!

Glad there seems to be some interest, hopefully this works <3

Posted by: Jade-o-Lantern🎃 8th October 2017, 04:06 PM

Horror films are not my thing at all but I'd definitely be interested in future weeks now that we don't have to commit to a certain day/time!

Posted by: Jonjo 8th October 2017, 09:56 PM

I voted for the only one in the list I haven't seen, The Gallows.

I like this idea a lot. Definitely a lot more flexible and at times, I'm always struggling to find things to watch, so if it's on here, then it might just fill that void for me.

P.s. If it's The Exorcist, I won't be watching. laugh.gif The film has scarred me. I understand it might not live up to the hype it once had, but the 9 year old in me is still petrified! Genuinely the only film, I won't actively watch again if I can help it. It's the scariest movie I have ever seen. But that's mainly coz I'm a wuss. But enjoy it guys. Looking forward to reading what you guys who will be watching for the first time think of it! biggrin.gif

Jonjo 😷😷💔

I hate to be the snob here but I'm a little nervous about what will probably be the inevitable "omg her vomit looks so fake / omg that special effect wasn't totally realistic so the entire film is shit and laughed all the way through it lmao xo" comments. I hear them from people irl and it makes my blood boil.

The film is so much more than its special effects and make up (which tbf it does exceptionally well but obviously not as glossy as modern horrors (eww to them anyway)). The film delves so deep into our psyche and the minds of children, parents, society AND most importantly the horror genre as a whole. It broke every convention going, refused to conform and tame itself down and just aggressively told the story.

I can't wait to rewatch and also to share with you guys more!!

Posted by: Cursed Wombat 9th October 2017, 05:14 PM

Ooh, sorry just seen this, the only ones I haven't seen are Orphan and The Gallows but they don't rlly strike me as films I particularly want to see, so I'll go for The Exorcist as it is like, the greatest horror film of all time and all. I was a bit weirded out by it at first, but every watch makes me appreciate it more and more.

Posted by: Jack 9th October 2017, 06:04 PM

The Descent is one of my fave films ever lmao.

Orphan is also completely slept on, such a good film that proper gets you in your feels. The Exorcist is good of course, but I've watched it a million times.

A couple of quick things:

BANNER:
Would anybody like to design a banner for FilmClub. Something nice & simple is perfect <3 Please post in here if you'd like to create a banner!

In future (I forgot to this week messT), with the films in the poll I will be adding a description as to what the film is about for future weeks.

Posted by: UltraReputation 12th October 2017, 08:04 PM

What days do you guys think will work best for FilmClub:

either the current schedule (Monday to Sunday)
or Friday to Thursday as I'd guess more people will watch the film at the weekend which would allow for more discussion to occur throughout the week.

Which do you guys think'll be better?

Posted by: Cameron 18th October 2017, 02:52 PM

Brats rock angelz or camp rock next week pls

Posted by: Jonjo 18th October 2017, 06:05 PM

I'd like maybe an Anime or a musical!

Posted by: lot🎈IT🎈a 18th October 2017, 09:30 PM

i'd love an anime too!!

Posted by: Sonia Fowler 18th October 2017, 09:33 PM

Hmm I'd love something completely different from a horror ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 18th October 2017, 10:11 PM

I was thinking 'My Neighbor Is Totoro' as an Anime choice and I have no idea for what to suggest for musicals, but they're also light hearted and fun majority of the time, so I think they'd be a nice counteract for the horror sesh. Maybe 'Little Shop of Horrors'? Ive seen it a few times, but I could never get bored of it wub.gif I've not seen 'Rent' before and I've heard it's worth watching!

These two are just two options that I would like to request to put in the poll if they go ahead pleaseeee. Haha.

Posted by: UltraReputation 18th October 2017, 11:17 PM

Ok poll Up with the options for theme this week! (These are the ones either suggested or I've seen somewhere)

Anime
Drama
Movie released in 2017
Musical
Oscar nominees/winners
Teen flick

This'll close this afternoon where I'll put the poll up for film selection!

Posted by: UltraReputation 18th October 2017, 11:20 PM

I've voted musicals cos they are obviously one of my favourite genres!

(Already starting the campaign for rent to win the poll if musicals, I've been meaning to get round to watching it for AGES and its on Netflix as well!)

Posted by: Jonjo 18th October 2017, 11:32 PM

I went for Anime. But I would be happy for a musicals win too!

Posted by: Sonia Fowler 18th October 2017, 11:32 PM

Decided to vote for Anime just to go outside my comfort zone more

Posted by: Jo...shh! It's coming 19th October 2017, 08:47 AM

Yes!! I've been meaning to see Rent for years but have never gotten around to it yet. "Seasons of Love" is gorgeous, I can imagine that being such a moment heart.gif

Posted by: Styles Bilinski 19th October 2017, 11:51 PM

I've voted for musicals but I'd be happy with anime too (maybe do both in back-to-back weeks since I appear to have just sent it into a tie? lol) and I'll definitely get involved with discussion now that horror is out of the way tongue.gif

Posted by: Jack 20th October 2017, 01:44 PM

Teen flicks is the only genre I like really! Well obviously films released in 2017.

Anime could be good I guess, I loved Spirited Away.

Posted by: UltraReputation 20th October 2017, 05:55 PM

Guys I can't find any anime films on netflix or amazon prime. Do you guys want to do musicals this week instead or do you want anime films but films that aren't on netflix/amazon prime?

Posted by: Sonia Fowler 22nd October 2017, 05:07 PM

Just looked on Netflix and their isn't a lot of the well known anime movies on Netflix at least.

Posted by: Cursed Wombat 22nd October 2017, 05:32 PM

The more well known anime films are quite easy to find online I've found, albeit from dodgy providers. I'd love to watch one if possible, have been really enjoying Studio Ghibli pictures recently.

Posted by: Jonjo 22nd October 2017, 05:43 PM

Yeah. I'm with Chez on this. However, I understand if there are people that may not want to go down that route of trying to find a link from another provider etc.. so I'm happy with musicals if people wanted to do that instead.

Maybe if one of us finds a link and those who want to watch from that link says "I'm in" in the topic, we could PM that member with a link or something if they're worried about stumbling onto a site that they aren't aware of?

Posted by: UltraReputation 22nd October 2017, 10:04 PM

Ok we'll go with Anime this week! Though this has taken way longer sorting out than I thought it'd be so I have another question!!

What would you guys think is better:
1) We wait until Friday to start Anime week and start going one per week as planned
2) We start on Tuesday (with poll tomorrow) and do a bumper week of Anime & Musical and then do one per week from Friday 3rd

also what films should I put in the Anime poll bar My Neighbour Totoro?

Posted by: Jonjo 23rd October 2017, 01:29 PM

Wait until Friday is fine with me biggrin.gif

Posted by: lot🎈IT🎈a 23rd October 2017, 01:54 PM

i would wait until friday!

put spirited away in pls!!

Posted by: UltraReputation 23rd October 2017, 08:59 PM

ok fab will wait till Friday! Poll selection for films will be up on Wednesday!

(Poll options so far then: Totoro, Spirited Away! Any other suggestions, if not I'll pick some that I think would work well!)

Week #2: Anime

Films to choose from:
Howl's Moving Castle - The story is set in a fictional kingdom where both magic and early 20th century technology are prevalent, against the backdrop of a war with another kingdom. The film tells the story of a young hatter named Sophie after she is turned into an old woman by a witch's curse. She encounters a wizard named Howl, and gets caught up in his resistance to fighting for the king.

My Neighbour Totoro - Tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei) of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan.

Spirited Away - Tells the story of Chihiro Ogino (Hiiragi), a sullen ten-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighborhood, enters the spirit world. After her parents are transformed into pigs by the witch Yubaba (Natsuki), Chihiro takes a job working in Yubaba's bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world.

The Red Turtle - Tells the story of a man who becomes shipwrecked on a deserted island and meets a giant red female turtle.

The Wind Rises - The Wind Rises is a fictionalized biopic of Jiro Horikoshi (1903–1982), designer of the Mitsubishi A5M fighter aircraft and its successor, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, used by the Empire of Japan during World War II.

Your Name - Your Name tells the story of a high school girl in rural Japan and a high school boy in Tokyo who swap bodies.

Posted by: UltraReputation 25th October 2017, 10:38 PM

I have gone with My Neighbour Totoro as I've wanted to watch it for AGES now! <3

Posted by: Sonia Fowler 25th October 2017, 10:39 PM

My Neighbour Totoro for me too!

Posted by: Jo...shh! It's coming 25th October 2017, 11:41 PM

Voted for Spirited Away because it seems like the most MUST-SEE film on the list and I haven't seen any of these at all. I was quite interested in seeing The Red Turtle too last year when it was Oscar nominated so that would be nice too ~~

Posted by: Jonjo 26th October 2017, 12:26 AM

I also went for 'My Neighbour Totoro' for the same reasons. I actually wouldn't mind any of these bar 'Red Turtle'. But that's only because I saw it literally 2 days ago laugh.gif

Posted by: Cursed Wombat 26th October 2017, 12:33 AM

I haven't seen the last three, I went with The Red Turtle as it looked the most intriguing from the descriptions kink.gif I've seen the first three quite a few times, but would be fine with any of them as they're all classics.

Posted by: TheStareCrow-dy 26th October 2017, 12:41 AM

like DAMN i could write an entire essay on either Howl's or Totoro, both are iconic *.*

Posted by: Iz~ 26th October 2017, 02:12 AM

I would so be with you guys if I wasn't abroad and couldn't really watch a film on the data I have.

Ghibli is great but I'm going to make a case for the relatively new and unseen by most of you Your Name. I haven't yet seen it myself because I want to see it in full quality once my preordered DVD arrives back home. but despite what doesn't seem the most original premise, everything I have heard about it puts it on the level of a classic that seems to make the most unlikely people start praising it in adoration. I have been patiently waiting a year to join that crowd. Even if you don't watch it for this, try and make time for it. I can't promise it'll be worth it but seemingly everyone who has seen it will.

Posted by: TheBattenburglar 26th October 2017, 09:26 PM

Aww, if only I'd known earlier I could have recommended a few other anime movies to vote on - I would have suggested adding great films like "Paprika", "Grave of the Fireflies" & "Summer Wars" to potentials, but I am so glad to see anime being a topic for this anyway!

Of the ones suggested, my vote goes towards the wonderful "Your Name". I saw it when it was released last year, and I haven't felt so strongly about a film in a long time - it's just so fantastic in so many ways, and no wonder it went on to become one of the highest grossing films of all time in Japan when it came out.

Posted by: UltraReputation 27th October 2017, 07:36 PM

A lot closer this week!

Howl's Moving Castle [ 1 ] ** [11.11%]
My Neighbour Totoro [ 3 ] ** [33.33%]
Spirited Away [ 2 ] ** [22.22%]
The Red Turtle [ 1 ] ** [11.11%]
The Wind Rises [ 0 ] ** [0.00%]
Your Name [ 2 ] ** [22.22%]

Posted by: UltraReputation 27th October 2017, 07:37 PM

No poll for theme this week cos as agreed above, next week is musicals!

What themes do you want to see put in the poll for next week?

Grave of the fireflies was a previous FilmClub film or that would have definitely been in the poll! (that was under the rabbit FilmClub days and I missed the session where everyone else watched it so I need to watch GOTF at some point!)
