Lady GaGa - 'You & I'
A new song she performed live first time in UK at Elton John's Party.

'Yoü & I' is the fourth single to be released from the album 'Born This Way'!

Posted by: JΛRK 21st June 2011, 04:17 PM

It's a very obvious choice. I have mixed emotions though. On the one hand it's a pretty stonking song with a big, bad ass chorus and that final minute or so is beyond killer. On the other hand it's also quite 'serious' sounding and could be dismissed as boring by those who just want big summery RedOne collabs from Gaga. I think at this stage depending on promo/video etc I'd say it's a safe bet for top 10 here and in the US but perhaps not top 5.

And so much for 'letting the fans choose'! I knew that wouldn't happen.

Posted by: Oricon 21st June 2011, 04:40 PM

I thought the fans get to choose....

Stupid Gaga sleep.gif

Posted by: Tyler 21st June 2011, 04:52 PM

She needs a fun Summer song. This is too similar to 'TEOG'.

AKA 'Scheiße' or 'Americano'. This would be better for fourth single IMO.

Posted by: Oricon 21st June 2011, 05:32 PM

Exactly my thoughts^

She should release Marry The Night when close to christmas period I think.

Posted by: JΛRK 21st June 2011, 05:32 PM

I don't think it sounds anything like The Edge of Glory... and she's released three summery songs in a row!

Posted by: Oricon 21st June 2011, 05:35 PM

3 Summery Songs? Where did you get that from o.O

Born This Way isn't summery, neither is The Edge Of Glory..

Posted by: Regina 21st June 2011, 05:35 PM

BTW not Summery? What the f*** have you been smoking? ohmy.gif

This sounds nothing like TEOG, like Jark said.

I'm not overly keen on this, but I imagine it'll grow on me.

Of course BTW is summery. It's the very epitome of it.

@ladygaga on GaGaDaily's 'What do you want to be the fourth single?' Poll:

And @gagadaily I've been watching your poll you're the best!

'Marry The Night', 'Bloody Mary' and 'Scheiße' are the current Top 3 leaders in the poll.

Posted by: Slick 22nd June 2011, 10:21 PM

Born This Way is quite clearly AUTUMNAL.

I wouldn't be disappointed with Marry The Night as a single as I think it's one of the best on the album, BUT I agree she perhaps needs something a bit more interesting and fun after the preceding singles were less so (particularly following The Edge of Glory.)

Posted by: Oricon 22nd June 2011, 10:37 PM

Marry The Night is quite a fun record imo as is Hair and Scheisse. All good contenders for the fourth single to be honest.

Posted by: Tirren 22nd June 2011, 10:39 PM

Even if Born This Way IS summery it very clearly isn't 'the epitome' of it, so let's not get overexcited and stretch our claims just because we're dealing with someone who wouldn't know a ballad if it pushed him down a flight of stairs. Americano is what we'd call the epitome of the summer sound.

Marry the Night is good but it's REALLY a bit samey when it comes to the sound Gaga's been pushing this era. It doesn't sound like Edge of Glory notionally but it does have the same sort of vibe about it. Better to leave it for fifth single I think, if it's going to get released.

Scheibe wouldn't do well commericially, but it's clear by the vote they have gone for fav, not if it would do well commericially.

'Scheiße' essentially winning by a margin of 2:1 there and quite rightfully so. If released as a single, it'll be her best to date...

ohmy.gif Very unexpected? So that rules out 'Marry The Night', 'Scheiße' and 'Hair' then!

I might just be reading a bit too much into things, but she replied to this person on Twitter saying that she'll be singing 'Heavy Metal Lover' at the BTWBall, but didn't say anything about any other BTW tracks, so maybe she could have been hinting that the next single is HML?
QUOTE
yes! RT @HausofZoeKills @ladygaga are you going to sing Heavy metal lover at the born this way ball? :'D I love it sooooooooooo much

If it is HML, w00t.gif wub.gif

Posted by: Jáhq 6th July 2011, 01:59 PM

I wouldn't take that to mean anything, she was replying to some fans and it just happens that someone asked about that one particular song. I don't think I'd expect her to miss out any of the standard edition tracks for the tour.

I read somewhere earlier that apprantly GaGa has said she wants to do a video for 'You & I', and they also mentioned that first tweet so was wondering if that was a hint. That could possibly disappoint a fair few people. I won't assume just yet though, maybe she's wanting to do some videos for non-singles too.

Posted by: CHЯIS. 6th July 2011, 02:24 PM

She's also said that she wants to make a music video for 'Black Jesus † Amen Fashion' though, so the 'hint' could also be of that. I think that could possibly be the worst decision she's ever made if she were to go with BJAF as the next single though. On the subject of Y&I, I agree with what you said Jack about it possibly disappointing a few people, and I'd be one of them.

01 Marry The Night
03 Government Hooker
05 Americano
06 Hair
07 Scheiße
08 Bloody Mary

09 Black Jesus † Amen Fashion
10 Bad Kids
11 Fashion Of His Love
12 Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)
13 Heavy Metal Lover
14 Electric Chapel

15 The Queen
16 Yoü & I

Too Obvious
I'd Be Happy With...

I'm glad to see it's going to be an unexpected choice! I'd hope for it to be either 'Government Hooker', 'Americano' or 'Heavy Metal Lover'...

Ooh unexpected? I'd be ECSTATIC with Government Hooker, Heavy Metal Lover or Americano wub.gif I've got a horrible feeling it'll be You & I though sad.gif I do love the song (it's an 8.5/10 for me) but it would be her weakest single so far. Americano could be huge, so I'd be inclined to want that more. It does make sense to have one of the aforementioned next, Scheisse could still be big as the 5th (or even 6th ohmy.gif) single.

Posted by: AV102 6th July 2011, 04:46 PM

Ah she has to release Marry The Night. I dont want this track to be left as an album track just like what happened to Dance in The Dark from The Fame Monster

Posted by: Acoustic 7th July 2011, 02:04 PM

'Marry the Night' and 'Hair' are really the only ones left that could work as a single. Most of the other songs are just strong album tracks.

RUMOUR MILL

1) On June 28th she told Out Front Colarado that she is "planning a Yoü and I video" http://omfgmusic.blogspot.com/2011/06/lady-gaga-has-been-hard-at-work.html

2) On July 8th a well known insider on twitter, @jeff1317, who broke the story about the mermaid scenes being scrapped for the EOG video among others, tweeted that the rumour that Americano will be the next single and a continuation of the Telelphone video is false.

http://twitter.com/#!/jeff1317/status/89109467395923968

QUOTE
""Rumor"" denied. RT @GagaGlobal RUMOUR: @ladygaga has chosen 'Americano' to be the next single + continuation to the Telephone Music video
3) In an interview she did when she was in Taiwan (on the youtube link skip to the 3.45 mark) they start discussing her next video, she says that;

QUOTE
"I haven't been excited for a video like this in a really long time, the relation of the video to my real life aswell as to my dream of the future is what really what makes it special. Part of what Born This Way is all about is choosing to live halfway between reality and fantasy at all times, and how anyone can do that, so this video really, really challenges that idea and also celebrates it and it's really exciting...I will also say that Yuyi is in incubation."

Yuyi is the name of her mermaid persona that she used for the EOG performance on Le Grand Journal and was supposed to appear in the EOG video.

She has mentioned on twitter that Bloody Mary is the song about her living halfway between reality and fantasy. Also, going by what she said here, about it "being her dream of the future" the theme doesn't really fit with Yoü and I.

On twitter in response, however it has been used to $h!t stir the rumour that Yoü and I is the next single.

Also, 11 hours ago on her tumblr, she uploaded a pic of herself from the Le Grand Journal performance; and in the caption she has spelt Yuyi with the Lüc Carl inspired ü. Another indication.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_lo84vxPEnz1qm0c6bo1_1280.png?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ6IHWSU3BX3X7X3Q&Expires=1310607335&Signature=OjG931G4A6z9%2FvwDmYfYM%2Bx6DTY%3D

And there are current rumours that Universal Japan Media has 'confirmed' that Yoü and I is in fact the new single. Still waiting on official word.

Other speculation;

- MTV used Heavy Metal Lover to represent GaGa for their "Best Song of the Year So Far" poll on their website (which won) which suggests it could be the new single.
- This week GaGa was interviewed by ChannelNine Entertainment from Thailand where she confirmed she will be visiting there, and at the end of the interview, she said "I love you, it's all about you and I" Further fuel to the fire?

Posted by: Silver Rocket 13th July 2011, 04:24 PM

Please, not 'Yoü And I' or 'Bloody Mary'. sad.gif

Posted by: RC741 13th July 2011, 04:56 PM

My 2 favourites on the album (out of the non-singles) are Marry The Night and Hair, but it looks like it could be Bloody Mary or You and I - I'm not sure how I feel about that if it is the case.

Posted by: Aidan 13th July 2011, 05:06 PM

I really hope it's not 'Yoü & I', it's a nice album track, but nowhere near the best on the album, and not single material.

Posted by: Liаm 13th July 2011, 05:07 PM

PLEASE let it be Bloody Mary then, but I've got a horrible feeling it's You & I sad.gif It's the worst on the album. Though it's still an 8/10 it'd be the worst single of her career!

Posted by: Jáhq 13th July 2011, 05:53 PM

I feel like the only one who wouldn't mind You & I. While some songs like Bad Kids, Bloody Mary & Heavy Metal Lover took a few listens or more to grow, I found You & I very instant. Anything apart from Government Hooker, Americano, Electric Chapel or the bonus tracks would please me.

As for her worst single, unquestionably 'Telephone'...

mellow.gif This will break her top 3 streak in my personal chart (TEOG peaked at 2, all the other singles got 1) and might miss top 10 in the UK/US charts... I can't say I didn't see it coming though! But I suppose releasing a weaker track 4th is good as Scheisse or Marry The Night could still be huge as a 5th/6th single, whereas if You & I is left until then it'd flop SO badly.

Posted by: Propilot87 13th July 2011, 08:46 PM

Ugh why this? i dont mind the song, and i know its very personal to her, but its not a good choice for a single, granted its already peaked at #33 in the US, its not gonna make the top 10, i don't get why she would pick this when there are so many other epic moments on this album. I really hope we get Schiesse 5th then.

Posted by: Daniel II 14th July 2011, 10:01 AM

Yoü and I makes commerical sense, it debuted at #36 in the US from album cherry picking, was covered on American Idol, and it's a sing-along, potentially massive cross over hit. Look at Paul O' Grady and Radio 1's Big Weekend to see how much of a reaction it gets when she performs it live, let alone at her concert shows. It's the only option left that I think will guarantee her another big radio hit in the US; which would help keep the momentum going - it's not a good time for a risky release. Marry the Night is the only other clear commerical single, and I hope that gets a winter release; Americano for 2012. Seeing as how we are supposed to get 9 singles this era that's going to last until 2013, it's safe to say Sheiße will gets its moment aswell as a full on Hair campaign.

Bloody Mary would indeed be a disaster single, even if it's given a novelty halloween release as some fans seem to want; it didn't work for Judas at Easter did it?

Her fourth single will have a better chart ranking as it won't be front loaded due to the fact the video is premiering on the day Gaga announces the 4th single so we will see a gradual climb for the 4th single as airplay picks up.

Oh, and apparently its been confirmed that this video is the continuation of the 'Telephone' video.

http://twitter.com/#search?q=continuation%20to%20telephone

Lot of talk on twitter about it, but I don't know, the source is @TimGaGa who is a big member on GGD; it's not exactly reliable. People are saying that she's walking down the road after leaving the Pussy Wagon behind, and she's shooting it in Nebraska to throw people off the scent - I guess there will be no end to the speculation now until the video actually premieres.

IF it is true, Highway Unicorn would fit well AND would be an 'unexpected single'; it's not controversial lyric wise, has a good message that sums up the album, is catchy - it could work. I can see another EOG disappointment among stans though if it turns out to be just GaGa singing You and I around a barn or something, and I have no idea where Yuyi will fit into all this.

Btw Liam, You and I went Top 10 on iTunes for a few days in the US after the album was released; it was massively cherry picked there - given some airplay, a video and VMA performance it could be a smash. People may not like the song, but I think it's one of the few commercial songs left on the album; Scheiße may be a fan favourite but it wouldn't work in the US, it could be another Judas on radio and she can't afford another one of those. If she does make it a single, it should be towards the end of the campaign when it doesn't really matter what the hell she releases.

Posted by: Jonjo 22nd July 2011, 01:14 AM

Ooft. 'Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)' is one of my favourites from the album and is quite similar to 'Poker Face'. I can actually see it doing well. Although it will obviously not do as well (or anywhere NEAR) as 'Poker Face' did. I get the feeling it's just a bit of a throw off as people could have correctly guessed it'd be 'You & I'!

Posted by: Liаm 22nd July 2011, 01:24 AM

I wouldn't be displeased with Highway Unicorn actually biggrin.gif

I've always like Highway Unicorn (Road to Love). It could do with a radio edit better than the poor mess that was given to TEOG, though.

DS seem to think it's You & I:

QUOTE
Lady GaGa has reportedly decided on her new single.

The singer will allegedly release 'You and I' as the fourth track to be lifted from her multi-million-selling album Born This Way.

The track was produced by AC/DC collaborator Robert John Lange and features electric guitar from Queen's Brian May.

It also samples the beat clap from Queen's iconic hit 'We Will Rock You'.

GaGa included the song as part of the setlist for a number of her final 'Monster Ball' shows, which came to a close back in May.

A video for the single is currently being filmed in Springfield, Nebraska in the US, where onlookers claim to have seen GaGa perform the track with a piano in the middle of a cornfield.

The 25-year-old performer recently revealed that her father hired a stripper to teach her the piano when she was younger.

Posted by: CHЯIS. 22nd July 2011, 11:36 PM

Video apparently directed by Laurieann Gibson.

19th July (video shoot day) she tweeted: @Boomkack

"Nebraska and Jesus Christ" being a lyric from 'Yoü & I'.

Posted by: Daniel II 23rd July 2011, 04:21 PM

Video Rumours

• A ton of freakshow people including Bionic Gaga, Mermaid Gaga, a “Sno Cone Man,” etc.
• Gaga will be playing the piano in the middle of the cornfield with Jo Calderone* sitting on top of the piano and watching Gaga.
• Gaga and Luc kissing in the cornfield at night as fireworks go off. Luc pushes Gaga down and runs away.
• Luc’s El Camino, Ginger, is on set.
• Gaga getting married inside the barn.
• Dancers doing choreography in the crop circle made in the field.
• Jonas Morales rumored to be directing the video.
• Part of the video was filmed in LA and today is the last day of the video shoot.
• Will be released in Early August.

Also, there's a rumour that the song has been remixed to be more uptempo.

* Jo Calderone is GaGa's male alter-ego; as 'Jo' GaGa did a photoshoot for Vogue Japan and did a faux-interview. GaGa also tweets as him occasionaly too http://twitter.com/#!/jocalderone

Remixed to be more uptempo? Please don't be true, it'd probably ruin You & I and would just make the choice even more chronically baffling. I mean the only redeeming feature of it being a single (though it's a great song) is that it's her first ballad single. If it's remixed to be uptempo, we might as well get Marry The Night, Scheisse or Americano...

As nice as 'You and I' is... That's all it is. I feel that Gaga needs something cutting edge for her fourth single such as Government Hooker or Americano. Americano screams summer and it sounds very Europe inspired, but it is quite similar to Alejandro. Government Hooker I'd imagine would have an amazing dark video but it isn't really radio friendly. Marry The Night should be the fifth single as there is little chance of that flopping I'd say. Bloody Mary is also a highlight but I don't see it as single worthy.

I just don't know why she's gone for Y & I after Edge of Glory. Hopefully the video will push it to the top 10 and then 'Marry The Night' can smash in the Autumn.

Posted by: CHЯIS. 25th July 2011, 12:46 AM

Already bored of 'Yoü & I' now. I'd just love it if on the day of the release the single ended up being 'Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)', really beginning to get into that song now, would be a great single choice. Very summery, and I could see it doing pretty well. It'd be even better if it were 'Heavy Metal Lover' though. wub.gif

Posted by: Liаm 25th July 2011, 01:37 PM

I would die (of happiness, of course) if it was Heavy Metal Lover wub.gif It's clearly You & I though, great song but would be her weakest single yet by some way sad.gif Yes, even below LoveGame (which is actually easily a 9/10 for me).

I don't think they were "expecting". I think they/we wanted 'Scheiße'. I think most people were expecting 'Marry the Night' or 'You & I'. With 'Scheiße' & 'Americano' being the general fan favourites to be released. Well that's what I got from all/most the speculation anyway haha.

Posted by: CHЯIS. 25th July 2011, 09:51 PM

The concept of the video is GaGa walking from New York to Nebraska to get her boyfriend back.

You can listen to the Omaha 94.1 interview here, http://ladygaganow.net/?p=6369

Posted by: Aidan 25th July 2011, 10:11 PM

The concept sounds like it would suit the song, but that just sounds like another 'The Edge Of Glory' video, GaGa walking on streets. This should be better though, since there could be more scenery as it's from New York to Nebraska, rather than 'The Edge Of Glory' where it was just a studio with one New York street.

Posted by: Liаm 25th July 2011, 10:30 PM

I saw it coming, I knew it would end up a single at some point as soon as I heard the album. Well actually the song has grown on me. Still not the best single choice, though it should show another side as her first ballad single. I'd say it's overtaken Edge Of Glory now, and my least favourite is probably Electric Chapel (still a 9/10). That's disregarding the bonus tracks, the best of which (Fashion Of His Love) being an 8/10. I can't see Y&I doing any better than Judas/Edge Of Glory did, but then again Heart will love it and it isn't OA/OS.

Posted by: Daniel II 26th July 2011, 06:11 AM

You can watch the radio interview here too; and you can see what goes on when she arrives and they meet, and what they talk about between the breaks which I always find fascinating to watch. I love how she directs the interview, that that she lets a fan come in and get an autograph and how she gets into her own songs; she seems so carefree and laidback throughout, plus she looks adorable wub.gif

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/lady-gaga-kat-103

I've said it before, but I really do think You and I is the most logical single choice; she needs to regain public faith and favour before she puts out something like Scheiße and this has the potential to be a big crossover hit, especially if she performs it at the VMAs; we shall see. I love the concept of the video too, and that they're shooting it on location; I think it could be, along with EOG, GaGa's most personal yet.

"It's really cinematic and beautiful; I have never seen light on film the way the way it looked here in Nebraska - I mean it just looked like God's light was shining right through that barn."

Can't wait.

Good choice. It's nice to see her finally take some risks with single selections.

Posted by: CHЯIS. 26th July 2011, 01:30 PM

I take back what I said about not being happy with this single choice, I'm loving this song again now, and I think it'll give her a reasonably big hit. I'm thinking (well, more hoping) that this could do a 'The Lazy Song' and possibly get her another UK #1, obviously depending on what else is released around the same time. This is going to appeal to an audience that probably wouldn't usually listen to her music (the older-ish generation), as well as her usual fanbase, therefore a clever choice in terms of bumping the album sales and keeping her exciting (unpredictable). If for some reason the single doesn't do as well as hoped there's always 'Scheiße' 'Marry The Night' or 'Americano' she can fall back on for the fifth single which any would no-doubtably do as well as her previous singles. This is guarenteed to be a smash in America though isn't it, I mean it went Top 10 on iTunes the week of the album release. Looking forward to seeing the video now, as long as we don't get another 'TEoG' joby I'll be happy.

I've been listening to this song a lot for the past five days or so now, and it was such an amazing song to listen to in the sun. The video should show that too, as GaGa said in the radio interview in Nebraska it was very hot during the video shoot.

I really don't care if this is the most logical single or whatever... For an album so batshit crazy and full of memorable moments she sure is choosing the most safe and boring singles. I still absolutely despise this - Shania Twain wouldn't even touch such rubbish.

"Born This Way" was released alongside other uplifting songs... "We R Who We R", "Firework" etc.

"Judas" isn't risky, it's just that the public were too dumb to notice it's metaphorical imagery and thought she was making a comment against religion.

I think this is an excellent album and am a fan of her music 80% of the time but get real people. You can be a massive fan and not be "persuaded" that this is suddenly an excellent choice of single. It's nothing short of terrible. It's in no form indicative of the rest of the album, in fact it sticks out like a sore thumb on the rest of the record and spoils the flow. It's lyrically and musically poor. How would you feel loving this song then purchasing the rest of the record to find a record as ridiculously electronic and crazy as BTW is.

At best it's a lazy, weak choice of single from a woman I viewed to be the very antithesis of such a practice, at worst it's a total con...

Posted by: Tirren 26th July 2011, 06:53 PM

^ Everything said there, not to mention it's made all the worse and more offensive by it being her worst track to date. A dull attempt to get lightning to strike twice as it had done with Speechless by making a cheesy 'Elton John sings over We Will Rock You' pastiche and entirely unrepresentative of where she is artistically.

I do kind of agree with this, while I did say above it's nice for her to have a ballad single and I won't deny it's growing on me, I agree you can't say it's a brilliant single choice. I think it will go top 10 but I can't see how people can see it's really the best choice, when we have Scheisse, Marry The Night, Americano and even Bloody Mary (which is still a more downtempo track yet electronic enough to represent the album). You & I is very good in a 'cheesy' way (I am a loon, I was bound to at least like it) but it really does sound totally out of place - much like Run The World (Girls) does on the largely mellow 4. I think she should have done a couple more ballads for this album, so You & I wasn't quite so out of place in it all.

I mean it will probably sell the album but some old woman listening to Heart will probably hear/buy it and then die of shock from Heavy Metal Lover and Government Hooker. I think she should have maybe either had more ballads on BTW (only one or two though) or kept You & I for a re-package with a couple of 'mellow' tracks on. Probably the latter, BTW being totally electronic would be have been nice.

Bloody Mary would NOT do good if released as a single, the references to church organs and bells and the title itself would put off people and the radio.

Posted by: Daniel II 26th July 2011, 07:57 PM

Her album sales are fading in the US, as is the public's goodwill towards her theatrics, she needs to push a single that would appeal to the casual buyer aswell as her fanbase.

You may think it goes against her artistic sensibilities, but she has talked numerous times about how she loves stadium rock and how artists such as Queen inspire her, and this just shows it more than any of her other tracks. My opinion remains the same, it may not be her at her batshit crazy best, but then radio aren't playing her anymore at her batshit crazy best. If she gets a hit out of this, it would help in the longterm and make sure that her star (in the US) doesn't fade.

Also, I think it's hardly her worst track, that honour goes to Money Honey.

'LoveGame' and 'Boys Boys Boys' are both far worse than 'Money Honey' - although all three are diabolical (like most of The Fame to be honest).

Posted by: Oricon 27th July 2011, 03:54 PM

To be honest the only reason You and I got top 10 on iTunes is because she promoted the hell out of the song before the release of the album hence it flew up. Whether it will go top 10 again on iTunes is another question (by this time, all the fans practically have the songs and will rely on casual buyers to see if they click with it).

Posted by: j a k e 27th July 2011, 04:01 PM

Yes it's true to say she's been inspired by stadium rock, Queen etc whatever but it's still all besides the point when it's the one such track on an electronic record. Also it's very Shania Twain and country in twang. It's a step back in her evolution and I doubt will do anything to further her career. I'd go as far to say that its inclusion on the record and now as a single is purely a matter of sentimentality on her behalf and it's shocking she and her label would allow her to tarnish her artistic integrity for what should be such a minor (at most) aspect of single choice and artistic evolution...

HOWEVER. She has been INCREDIBLY safe after 'Judas'... I think it's under performance scared her label and Gaga.

SCHEISSE IS THE BEST THING ON THE ALBUM! mad.gif

PS- Oricon, LMFAO this is not a ballad... wtf. No.

Posted by: Aidan 27th July 2011, 08:37 PM

I don't think she's necessarily playing it safe. I had a feeling GaGa would want to release this song as a single at one time, and I believe it would do a lot better as an earlier single rather than the fifth or sixth. I also remember after the release of the album GaGa Daily created a poll asking what fans wanted as a single from the album, which GaGa tweeted saying she was keeping a close eye on - the poll had 'Scheiße' most voted by quite a large gap. So perhaps GaGa saw the demand for it as a single and decided it would do a lot better as a fifth or sixth single than 'Yoü and I'.

How is this song "taking a risk"? unsure.gif It's surely one of the most safe choices from the album, no? A risk to me, would be releasing something like 'Government Hooker', 'Bloody Mary', 'Americano', 'Heavy Metal Lover' or 'Scheiße' or something. Not this. I recommend people stick with The 4-non-blondes 'What's Going On?' original. It's far superior, imo.

Because she has not released a non-dance song in her entire career. It's also quite country-esque and generally a different sound for her.

Well, I'd probably say this is the closest thing to a ballad on the album, but perhaps not quite there.

Maybe this is slightly risky in some aspects, but compared to what she could choose, I'd say this is playing it safe.

Don't like the 'Yoü & I' choreography AT ALL. Looks like something from a school play.

My sleep.gif , You and I certainly isn't a song where you dance to and have a choreography to.....

Posted by: Klumzee 29th July 2011, 07:53 PM

The choreography for 'You & I' is terrible! mellow.gif It's definitely a 'sit behind the piano and sing your heart out' type of song.

I think her fifth single would be what would save her stardom as I think she's going downhill with every release from Born This Way... (bar The Edge Of Glory)...

Posted by: Acoustic 29th July 2011, 10:04 PM

Well Gaga isn't much of a dancer and all her choreography is pretty simple but I agree that 'You and I' is much better performed at a piano.

Posted by: Rain 30th July 2011, 12:02 PM

You & I charted really well when the album was released (didn't it go top 10 on iTunes?) so that has probably persuaded the label to go with it. Unfortunately it's not that radio-friendly at all so I can't see it connecting with the general public. We'll see though, maybe the video will be amazing although I'm not holding my breath after the Edge Of Glory fiasco.

Posted by: CHЯIS. 30th July 2011, 01:03 PM

Yes, it went Top 10 on US iTunes the week of the album release, entering at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100. She had performed it on a few TV shows over there though with the first on The Today Show in July 2010.

It also entered the Canadian Hot 100 at #27 and the Official UK Chart at #89.

Posted by: CHЯIS 16th August 2011, 05:17 PM

Video is apparently 6 minutes and 10 seconds long.

Music channels will be having a field day cutting and editing it all (and will no doubt end up doing a piss poor job as usual).

Posted by: Klumzee 16th August 2011, 05:19 PM

Well the song is over 5 minutes, so there shouldn't be too many cut scenes.

Posted by: Liаm 16th August 2011, 05:24 PM

With how long the song is, I'd imagine there'll be a bit of an intro without music and then maybe a bit at the middle or the end, there's not that much space to fill seeing as the song's 5 minutes 7 seconds, 30 seconds at the middle and end is plausible. Music channels will still do a shitty edit though, no doubt.

Posted by: CHЯIS 16th August 2011, 05:27 PM

That sex scene will without a doubt be cut out, so hopefully that'll be the only part.

Confirmation of video time. Also, looks like they're going to keep us waiting a little longer... 'soon'. drama.gif

Posted by: Jáhq 16th August 2011, 05:46 PM

A lot happening and I don't really get it. I'd say it once again isn't up to the standard of Telephone/Paparazzi/Bad Romance, and from this era I prefer Judas, but not too bad I guess.

Posted by: JakeWild 16th August 2011, 05:47 PM

Again I really wish this video was for a better song. It seems like such a waste though I must say it does make the song SLIGHTLY more bearable.

Cringe at the "6 years" bit!

Posted by: Cremey 16th August 2011, 05:48 PM

It doesn't really fit the song at all? Just seems completely random. It's like she's trying to create a masterpiece but it just doesn't fit...

Posted by: CHЯIS 16th August 2011, 05:49 PM

I like it. A bit WTF, but thats GaGa for you.

Posted by: Rain 16th August 2011, 05:51 PM

I didn't get the video at all. This whole release is such a non-event. The song is just not single material and I don't think many people care about it.

Posted by: Klumzee 16th August 2011, 05:56 PM

I didn't get what the plotline was and it didn't really fit in with the song and it's message. I think GaGa is 'over-thinking' all her music videos after Bad Romance and Telephone and is now alienating the public with them. sad.gif

Posted by: Aidan 16th August 2011, 05:57 PM

Posted by: Aled. 16th August 2011, 06:05 PM

I quite liked it. It makes no sense AT ALL of course but understanding what happens inside that woman's head is something I've long given up on. The problem really is that this isn't the strongest track on the album by quite some distance, and whilst I think this is the best video she's given us this era, I do wish it had been to a stronger track.

Posted by: Klumzee 16th August 2011, 06:06 PM

You're not missing out on much.

Posted by: Liаm 16th August 2011, 06:07 PM

I know, but I'm looning and want to see the video sad.gif tongue.gif

I had a feeling just from the pictures it would have little to do with the song's message but it looks a good video.

Posted by: Aidan 16th August 2011, 06:09 PM

I like it. It doesn't really fit the song much, but it was a good video if it were for another song.

Posted by: CHЯIS 16th August 2011, 06:12 PM

I wish she'd have put some eyebrows on for the bit at the end when she takes her glasses off. She looks hideous.

Posted by: ▲▲▲ 16th August 2011, 06:15 PM

Not what I was expecting...

It would have made more sense if the first part of the song was her walking/playing piano in the cornfield with Jo and then him Frankensteining her instead of the random guy. BUT IT WAS ALRIGHT. Shit song still.

Posted by: Slick 16th August 2011, 06:20 PM

I've seen it now. To me the video doesn't seem to fit the song at all. The song is nowhere near as 'epic' as her others and doesn't SUIT a video like this, plus the totally random events, suspect plotline and choreography all seem much better suited to something a bit more upbeat. It's not bad but I do think she's got to the stage now where she's scared of making a simple but effective video with a solid story and a bit of emotion because she's got to keep bettering herself.

Posted by: Aidan 16th August 2011, 06:21 PM

Just a thought, but does anyone else think that Gaga left a clue at the end of the video, where she gets married. 'Marry The Night' the next single?

Posted by: Liаm 16th August 2011, 06:26 PM

I found and managed to watch it (don't ask me for the link though, that one's down too now) and I agree with what's been said - it is a brilliant video but it really doesn't fit the song or it's message. It feels to me like she made the video and just randomly flung the song on top or something (which of course we know isn't the case but it kind of seems like it) sad.gif I kind of wish she'd stop making such a big cinematic thing of all her videos now, Pokerface, Judas, Just Dance, even The Edge Of Glory were all good videos. As were Telephone, Born This Way and Bad Romance, but the whole big deal cinematic thing isn't really needed for every video. I know Edge and (to an extent Judas) were simple so maybe we were due a big Gaga video again, but this song really doesn't call for it, I'd rather this video was for Marry The Night or something.

My exact feelings. I think this is the video that should have been for TEoG. It'd suit that song so much better I think. It's a good video for what it is, but it honestly doesn't go with the song and it is actually a little off putting to me.

Also at the comments about the music channels "butchering the video" or whatever. They can only work with what they're given laugh.gif

Posted by: Davidson 16th August 2011, 07:16 PM

The video is great, but makes no sense. Shame. I can't help but feel, if you are going to release such a personal song, you need to have a music video with a plotline and I just have no clue what it is even about. It is cinematicly rather beautiful, but it just doesn't fit the song at all.

Posted by: MANIAC 16th August 2011, 09:23 PM

I haven't particularly enjoyed a GaGa video since Bad Romance to be honest, mainly due to their being dramatic, strange, and complete messes. This video, however, is my favorite since Bad Romance, because it has SOME kind of storyline that makes a bit of sense. Somebody above said that it would've made more sense if Jo was doing the frankenstein job, and I agree wholeheartedly. If she spent a bit more time with the piano in the cornfield, I would've really enjoyed it. I do love the song, so frankly I'm a bit annoyed by the overdramatizing of an obviously downtempo number that was begging for a simple video. However, compared to the other videos she's made as of late, it's a step in the right direction.

Posted by: Acoustic 16th August 2011, 09:41 PM

I don't understand the story of but it's beautifully shot.

Posted by: C H A R L I E ? 16th August 2011, 10:06 PM

I don't have a clue what the fuck is going on but I like it. For me:

Born This Way = good song slightly spoilt by an overly strange video
Judas = weak song with well-made but predictable video
The Edge of Glory = good song let down by disinteresting video
You and I = good song with a wacky but more interesting video

Posted by: Jack 16th August 2011, 10:20 PM

I hadn't heard this song before for whatever reason, and I cannot get over how bad it is! It sounds like something TAYLOR SWIFT would release! mellow.gif What on earth was she thinking?! The video's nice enough but has no real direction.

Posted by: Liаm 16th August 2011, 10:57 PM

I am really loving the song now, but it does sound like something Shania Twain would release in 1996. Still love it though, and it's a nice change for her to finally have a ballad single!

Agreed on the latter. She completely misjudged this and The Edge of Glory. The video would have been much better had it just focused on Gaga/Jo on the piano, simple and effective. The Edge of Glory was screaming for something over the top, life and death, mermaid on a cliff etc.

Maybe she felt Edge of Glory didn't need an over the top video as the song was selling itself on its own, where as You and I may need a more over the top video as its not as commercial of a song and needs the added hype to help propel it up the charts...just a thought, that being said i do sort of wish it was the other way around, i was expecting the video to just be her and Jo and different scenes with the two of them.

It's more clear than ever that the song is a HUGE step backwards for her, despite being different to all her other singles. I don't mind the song, but it is extremely tacky and given the choice she had on the album it is disappointing.

Such a flawless video.

I'm thinking the mermaid represents her childish antics (as mermaids are usually linked with childhood/fairytales). Perhaps she was a young, free, wild thing before she met him. And the scene with him humping her suggests the loss of her innocence.

Regardless, I love the video. Am impressed Gaga!

This is how I see it; GaGa is making her way back to her Nebraska guy (Lüc Carl) and has to leave her childhood behind her in the process, and ends up stopping at a crossroads, unsure of whether to go on. We also see 19 year old Stefani (GaGa with the black hair) becoming the artist and person GaGa feels she is today (the mermaid representing herself as something special/magical) through the help of Frankenstein Luc (played here by a total hunk); GaGa has stated the obvious recently, that he has been her muse for her whole career, Born This Way is dedicated to him, and it just represents that omnipresent influence on her progression visually. The GaGa and Jo scenes demonstrates her ability to love herself, and as I see it, embracing her italian ancestry aswell (something else that she feels is a huge part of her). The video ends with GaGa choosing to/feeling ready to go ahead with the relationship as she starts running down the road; her getting married to the hunk showing her ultimate fantasy (being together with Luc). Personally, my favourite video of the era, and I loved Born This Way and Judas.

I think it could even struggle to get Top 30. At #110 when the video has now been out for 1 week, and has been receiving a fair amount of TV airplay isn't great. We'll just have to wait and see tomorrow if Radio 1 decide to back it and add it to their playlist or not. Having said that, its currently in the Top 15 on US/Canadian/Australian iTunes, and #5 in New Zealand, so fingers crossed the UK can play catch up, and it can go AT LEAST Top 20.

'Hair' is one of the worst tracks on the album, and it'd be her worst single to date if she decided to release it. Considering she wants to release 8/9 tracks from this album though, and as its one of her faves, it wouldn't surprise me if it does get a release somewhere along the lines.

Not really, coming from Gaga, the album should still be Top 10, BTW should still be top 75 etc.

If gaga invented the cure for cancer and aids it wouldn't be enough for you. I'm not a blind sheep...I know she's taken some knocks lately but she's still very successfull in the UK and all over the world. 4.3m copies of BTW sold since may...over a million of The Fame sold this year. Dethrowning Avril as the new western queen of japan. 12m singles sold this year.

I do think it's interesting the way people are re-writing her previous era's as ones in which she's sold 100s of thousands of albums week after week...she never did...she always sold small consistent amounts week after week and she continued that with BTW. It's not her fault that sales are in the toilet and have been all summer. Beyonce's not sold much considering all those weeks in the top 10. If you want to see what a flop looks like try Love? or Aphrodite...millions spent on their launches and both have been a disaster sales wise.

Love? has already outsold her last 2 albums anyway, so not really a flop.

You ain't the only one who can dish out fact and figures.

I'm not gonna defend Kylie as much because Aphrodtie was not handled well, but ATL is still her best selling single since CGYOOMH.
Album went platinum with only one hit single too.

I'm pretty sure we'd all be hailing Lady Gaga if she cured cancer... Anyway, there's no denying the singles have been disappointing (success wise, not quality) - they really should've all gone top 5, but midweek release didn't help. The album's done fine - judging by the low sales climate at the minute I'm a bit disappointed she's not doing better though.

Singles, smingles...album sales are the most important. Love that you failed to mention exact figures for Love? because they are so POOR though. Oh and Jlo will make hardly anything from Vevo for all those plays...because she didn't write the song. Gaga has shitloads of vevo views anyhow overall...what live performance from Jlo has as much as 11m views (gaga Grammys). Gaga's outsold Jlo's total singles sales by double in a few years.

Also Kylie "Album went platinum with one hit single". Ha! You must be so proud!! Disaster.

I don't have them because I am not some over-sensitive nutjob who thinks the sun shines out of Gaga's arse.

Yeah but NO ONE is doing well apart from Adele period...it annoys me that people focus all their negativity on gaga. No one says Beyonce's sales are low for so many weeks in the top 10, no one says Jessie J's sales are low for so many weeks in the 20 and so much hype...it's all on gaga. Always. Gaga this, gaga that. Gaga's an attention whore...Rihanna's the one changing her swimming cossie 3 times a day for the pap's while she's on holiday while gaga has heavy security around her and NEVER talks about her personal life. Gaga gets so much crap thrown at her and she DOES NOT deserve it.

No she needs a fricking miracle after 3 underperforming albums in a row. The public DO NOT CARE about Kylie. Her career is over. Many venues particularly in europe had to be downsized during the Aphrodite tour. Kylie's ship has sailed.

She doesn't have any crap thrown at her... She's one of the most successful artists in ages, commercially and critically, however some people don't love her like you do, in the same way you dislike Kylie and J-Lo, it's an opinion which people are allowed to show. I am also a Gaga loon, however I can except people not liking her in the same way I don't like Justin Bieber or Cee-Lo Green but I don't get attacked for that, and I don't attack people who like them for no reason just because they're not up Gaga's ass. Not everyone can love her, simple as.

It's number 1 albums in 4 different era's. If you are going to stan...do it right. Kylie fans are the new Janet fans...obsessed with past glories. Also gaga's concentrating on outselling Kylie's total record sales in the new few months...Gaga will be heading towards 100m album and singles next year.

Gaga's only on 64 million, I very much doubt she'll sell 36 million copies of Born This Way (album), You & I and subsequent singles altogether in just a year...

I disagree. She gets more bad press than Rihanna and Katy combined. People are constantly trying to bring her down because she is the biggest and powerfull star. I'm gutted...I cannot believe you are a gaga fan and you are turning on me the way you are. I feel stabbed in the back.

No she's not she's on 64 million singles + around 20m albums = 84m records. When people use the expression "record" sales...they are referring to album and single sales. When people say Madonna has sold 300m records...thats albums and singles.

I'm not fickle, Born This Way and The Fame Monster are both in my top 3 albums of all time, I can just handle criticism to her. She can take it too, she doesn't attack people for not liking her. Bottom line is, there's no need to attack everyone who doesn't like her as much as you do, Regina doesn't even hate her, he's more of a casual fan. Besides has he been as low as you, by bringing Kylie's cancer into it? You honestly think she would be able to work 12 hour days having just beaten cancer? Kylie wanted to be back and making music, she did that and we, her fans, were happy
to see it.
Kylie has been making music for nearly 25 years, she has proved her critics wrong by still getting Top 3 hits and #1 albums. She makes music because
she wants to and its what she enjoys. She isn't totally focused on getting #1's.

It should start climbing now that its been playlisted. I think top 10 is asking too much but Top 20 should be achieveable.

Posted by: Liаm 24th August 2011, 06:10 PM

It's number 65(ish) combined, with the other version at 100something! Certain to climb too, what with the Radio 1 and 2 C-Listing.

Top 10 defo. I'd put money on it.

Posted by: Klumzee 24th August 2011, 06:25 PM

Missed it. pirate.gif

But anyway, I'm glad You & I has been playlisted by Radio 1 and 2. I had a feeling it might've been snubbed by Radio 1, as it's slightly country sounding, but now it has hopefully it can go top 20 happy.gif

Posted by: Liаm 24th August 2011, 06:33 PM

I was worried it would peak at 22 or something, but with the radio support I think top 20 is a cert, I wouldn't rule out top 10 tbh. It's not even that country sounding - it does sound kind of like something Shania Twain would release in 1998 (that's a compliment btw, I love You & I) but it's more just pop with a slightly rock and roll twist to me. Though maybe I just listen to too much 'proper' country (Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride etc.) to hear it laugh.gif

The general public would probably class it as 'country-sounding' and I was worried Radio 1 would snub it because country is generally disliked and considered 'not cool' in the UK. And Radio 1 would never want to playlist anything that 'isn't cool' tongue.gif

Country-ish songs do not do well in this country AT ALL. If this was the late 90's then it'd be a different story.

I can't feel positive about this being a single, despite the video being decent. Overtakes 'Telephone' as her worst (well, I mean most average) single for me. There was plenty on this album that is both more interesting and completely different to her usual.

#5 on US itunes now, this is doing much better than i thought it would, should def be top 20 on the hot 100 next week, maybe even top 10?

Posted by: JakeWild 27th August 2011, 01:37 AM

I can't tell if this whole name change for each place is ingenious or just really desperate.

Going for the latter right now though after listening to some of them. The editing is shocking.

Posted by: Oricon 27th August 2011, 02:14 AM

Some editing are not that bad but some like California is just rubbish... it ruins the song for me.

Will they all be released? laugh.gif

ALSO what happened to the US airplay thread...??

No, the whole of Europe is slow(ish) at picking it up, not just the UK.

'Yoü And I' is a ne.gif at #70 on the Official UK Chart this week.

i do not really like this single.

Posted by: heartraterapid 29th August 2011, 03:31 PM

Does nobody else get a strong theme of domestic violence/control coming across in the video? The mermaid scene suggests to me a mermaid stuck in a tin bath reliant on her human man to keep her wet and alive. Likewise when she's that machine woman trying to break out, she has the man controlling her and powering her etc.

Posted by: Oricon 29th August 2011, 05:20 PM

I get a feeling that it's about how the man is controlling her too much in the relationship, bringing in domestic violence as one of the reason.

I even said this song would fail to reach top 20 but probably only reach top 30.....

Why doesn't the UK like country music? And yet we get praised for having a large diversity on our music industry and we don't do country music at all....

I can't even comprehend why, it's so sad because country is probably my favourite genre next to pop yet as far as we get on board is the odd minor album hit and maybe once a blue moon a miraculous single (Need You Now, Love Story) that does well. And my favourite singer of all time (Carrie Underwood) has only had one album chart here, at 93 (without support). I mean I don't see why, pure country I can kind of understand having a hard time (though they often do OK in albums) but I really think country-pop like Carrie Underwood could have a chance, given support. I think that's it, support. Although You & I's getting support and is still struggling, though it may just not be appealing to some of her fans, Carrie would have a target audience and I'm sure she could easily have a Love Story sized hit given half a chance sad.gif Or is my looning clouding my judgment? tongue.gif

I'm pretty sure you're right, Love Story was a one off though, ever since then I havn't even seen a country song going top 10. AND ON TOP OF THAT, that was when Love Story was edited so the Banjos and all country instruments being removed by adding guitar making it sound more "pop"....

I guess so, she did the same with her whole album with both Fearless and Speak Now. Shania Twain in 2005 with Party For Two was the last country song I remember top 10 (discluded Love Story with it's pop remix). Carrie Underwood could easily have done it with Before He Cheats, Last Name, Cowboy Cassanova, Quitter or Undo it - it's too late now as BHC is 5 years old, LN 4 years old and CC, Quitter and Undo It 2 years old. Hopefully she can do a T-Swift next album.

As for Gaga, it doesn't look good as the country stigma still exists. Tbh she was mad to go with Marry The Night, Hair or Americano as the European single with Y&I for America/Oceania.

What's the purpose of them?

Posted by: JakeWild 2nd September 2011, 09:35 AM

That video >>>>> The official one

It makes the song resonate with me so much more and it make's me realise just how awful the original is with all those unnecessary theatrics. Especially when the difference in cost would have been absolutely huge for each video when for me personally this one does a much better job of selling the song.

To me that video plays like an extended perfume advert. I far prefer the original, it's both wacky enough to satisfy most of her fans while being more personal than the other three videos from this era AND fitting the song well.

If she released all the other versions of You and I next week with around 50+million AirPlay I think she would easy go #1 in the US

Posted by: Tyler 5th September 2011, 04:03 PM

I don't understand why so many people on here dislike it. I think it is a really solid mid tempo song. It's very anthemic.

I think the complexity the video brings a whole new dimension to the song as well. But each to their own and all that.

The Jonathan Ross Show appearance should help it out, it could potentially get top 20 now, and if there's an XFactor performance, top 10.

Getting bored of this now. It'll get a boost, but I am now of the opinion that I don't want a performance wasted on this song over some of the others. She'll do it on Jonathan Ross but I'm hoping she'll perform near the very end of the XF live shows and perform single #5 instead.

Aye I'm really hoping she doesn't waste an X Factor slot on this song. Still holding out hope that single #5 is Scheiße and she performs that.
