So what do you reckon it's the biggest achievement,

occupying the entire top 10 at once vs. selling 1.5 million albums in 2022?

for me it's the latter. I really thought no one would never ever again sell even above 1 million
I actually think 30 failed to do so, and really thought no one would ever do it again
not even with multi vinyl buying

what do you guys reckon?

I agree that it is a huge achievement. But seemingly not just in 2022. Since 1991 there have only been 22 albums that have sold over 1 million in a week. Adele’s 25 did it 3 times! I posted this in the other thread:

Apparently, only 22 albums have sold over 1M in one week in the US (since they started tracking it in 1991). Taylor has 5 out of those 22 albums:

Speak Now: 1,047,000 (16th in 2010)
Red: 1,208,000 (18th in 2012)
1989: 1,287,000 (19th in 2014)
Midnight: 1,578,000 (22nd in 2022)

5 of the last 7 albums to sell 1M+ have come from Taylor. The only other two albums were by Lady Gaga (Born This Way) 17th album in 2011 and Adele (25) 20th album in 2015.

I think I agree. I feel like in this day and age 10 top 10 singles would be easier to achieve than 1.5million albums in the first week, although if an album can sell that well by a popular artist who is such a dominant force on that scale filling out the top 10 almost seems like an inevitability.

Honestly, I think the pure sales figure is the most impressive thing about it all. Who knew that even Taylor could SELL that many actual copies in this day and age??

Amazing stuff.

I agree that selling 1.5 million is the more impressive feat! Drake wasn't too far off the other achievement (I think he managed 9) whereas she seems to be in her own lane with sales. I mean, a new career best level of first week sales when she's 16 years in to the game... and all while sales have dropped off a cliff across the board? Insane.

When even Adele couldn't top 1 million sales with her last album (let alone pure sales) it felt safe to predict it was just never going to happen again. Whereas it was kind of inevitable that a top 10 lockout would eventually happen, as album bombs that take up at least 4 or 5 spaces in the top 10 have become increasingly common and indeed Drake already managed 9/10 once (I imagine he has a chance of repeating the 10/10 feat eventually but it's very hard to imagine anyone other than Taylor pulling off another opening week so huge - maaaaaybe Harry Styles? but I think if he was going to do it it would have been with 'Harry's House')

if Drake almost did it with that horrible Certified Boy Lover album with the Right Said Fred cover ouch
then he sure could do it with a new album if he goes back to his usual style, his last album only had 3 top tracks in the top 10 I believe

Harry had 4 so not bad but not even close

People are really trying to discredit her for the ten tracks getting top 10 due to it being digital / streams and not physicals (though they should not tempt her as i wouldn't be surprised if she did do physical singles for each track lol).

I personally think the top 10s is more significant than the album sales... first week was always going to be huge and besides Evermore, she generally opens with 1mil plus.
