BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSees 18th August 2018, 12:35 PM

George Ezra regained the top spot from Drake last week, but now there's the big new track Promises from Calvin Harris & Sam Smith, two men with countless #1 singles between them. On course for new entries are Jess Glynne's All I Am, The 1975's TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME, a couple of tracks from Ariana's Sweetener and potentially the new Marshmello & Bastille collab

Rest in peace to Aretha Franklin, who sadly passed away on Thursday. We could see a few of her classic tunes re-appearing in this week's chart

Ariana Grande looks to end the soundtrack stranglehold atop the album chart, Sweetener would be her second #1 album assuming it gets there. Bugzy Malone can notch his fourth Top 10 album with B. Inspired, Slaves might get their third with Acts Of Joy And Love, and Gabrielle returns for her first album in 11 years - Under My Skin. Other new releases from Death Cab For Cutie, Neil Diamond, Stefflon Don, Example, Mitski, Oh Sees and more

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday and Sunday: Information on Twitter from MintRoyale only. Please do not make requests, we do not have any information other than what's posted.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 + Radio 1 Chart Update 5:30pm to 5:45pm.

Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored.

Calvin could easily nab #1 when George hits ACR if he fails to overtake George on streaming

Drake's actually a bit closer to George than I thought he would be this week, hmm

Yup

Posted by: gavindeejay 20th August 2018, 03:11 PM

I was hoping 'In My Head' would be Top 40 considering it's doing very well on Spotify.

Great to see Calvin debut Top 5.

Posted by: pippa 20th August 2018, 03:14 PM

I would welcome George Ezra holding off Drake again this week in the singles chart.
Ariana Grande will open at number 1 with sales likely to be 45,000, would that be a correct prediction.

Great numbers for Ariana, I thought she might shift 30k for a full week so that's impressive.

Well done to Ariana Grande. And also great to see Aretha Franklin in the album charts. It's just a shame that it took her her death to get some of her albums in the charts. She's got the best female voice of all time sad.gif

Posted by: Bjork 20th August 2018, 03:35 PM

I actually thought drake would return to #1, shotgun has dropped again a lot on itunes now that it's no longer 59p

Oh Sees at 37 yess *.* hope they can stay in the top 100

Posted by: ThePensmith 20th August 2018, 04:07 PM

A very good start for Ariana Grande. I can see this album easily being one of the big Q4 sellers. Good to see Gabrielle's new album in the top 10 as well.

Posted by: pippa 20th August 2018, 04:34 PM

It is wonderful to see Gabrielle in the Top 10 but i am in ways overlooking it as i fear she will drop as the week progresses and be lucky to remain Top 15.
That said, i would greatly welcome my fears to be proved wrong.

Posted by: danG 20th August 2018, 04:35 PM

Hopefully Samvin Harrismith can make up the numbers and get to #3 this week, still think it's a very likely future #1. Great to see so many entries this week too, we are truly blessed!! Would be nice if at least one of the Aretha tracks holds on by Friday.

Was thinking Drake would make it back to #1 now George is no longer on 59p but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.

Oh and of f**king course Juice WRLD is set to spend another week at #11 rolleyes.gif He doesn't deserve the Bebe Rexha treatment!!

Good to see Jess Glynne and The 1975 top 20, the latter most likely won't hang on but should at least outpeak 'Love It If We Made It'.

'In My Mind' is currently at #44 and once the streaming data catches up it should be on course to enter this week's top 40! biggrin.gif

'Baby Shark' is also going to become an OFFICIAL CHART SMASH HIT (according to Alan Jones) as it's up to #60!!

God is a woman is fairly naff but the album as a whole is decent

Its ridiculous title aside, it's actually very good by their standards and hopefully gives them a long running hit a la The Sound/Chocolate. I think that's what they're going for anyway.

The title for 1975 track I keep on reading it as TOOT ME TOOT ME TOOT ME laugh.gif as its very hard to see the I in there,

As a whole, the single charts looks a lot fresher than usual with quite a few new tracks

At Juice WRLD drama.gif

Great sales for Ariana, thought it'd just reach 35k or sth but seems more like 45k which is fantastic for an international pop act these days (especially outside Q4)

Posted by: Robbie 21st August 2018, 01:47 PM

That The 1975 title looks absolutely ridiculous. That said the track itself isn't too bad.

Drake should close that gap with the streams and video views

Posted by: Dobbo 21st August 2018, 07:29 PM

Here's one for the super obscure chart nerds brainboxes!

If Drake does retake #1 when was the last time it went A-B-A-B at the top spot? Most of the time when a song returns to #1 it's different one that eclipses it the second time.

Before I post this I do now realise that this isn't the case^ as Three Lions interrupted this pattern but I'm still intrigued all the same.

Posted by: Rush 21st August 2018, 07:48 PM

From scrolling through the Wikipedia lists, I think the answer may be the first time 'Three Lions' hit #1 ohmy.gif

740 Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds "Three Lions" 1 June 1996 1
741 Fugees "Killing Me Softly" † 8 June 1996 4
re Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds "Three Lions" 6 July 1996 1
re Fugees "Killing Me Softly" † 13 July 1996 1

The last one before that I can see is almost 30 years earlier:

262 The Scaffold "Lily the Pink" 11 December 1968 3
263 Marmalade "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" 1 January 1969 1
re The Scaffold "Lily the Pink" 8 January 1969 1
re Marmalade "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" 15 January 1969 2

although the '70s and '80s lists don't show a single song returning to #1, and I'm honestly not sure if that's because they're grouped together, or if there really were no #1 returns in over 20 years. (You'd think the answer would be obvious but I suppose I've never paid enough attention.)

People were saying the same thing this time last week when the gap was similar and had increased since the Monday by a similar amount... but somehow Shotgun finished ahead not just overall but on streaming points. That was despite In My Feelings being #1 on the streaming charts (pure audio streams with no paid/unpaid split) and ahead on Spotify by around 5:4 for some time. Yes, Shotgun was ahead on video streams last week and maybe isn’t anymore, could that make the difference? Possibly, but so far I think it’s pointing to another week at #1 for George.

The first time a record returned to the top in the Official Chart era (February 1969 onwards) was 'Mr Blobby' by Mr Blobby in December 1993. The number 1s from December 1968 and Janaury 1969 were on Record Retailer's (now Music Week) own chart. Prior to Mr Blobby the closest an act came to returning to the top on the Official Chart was 'Ice Ice Baby' by Vanilla Ice on 30 December 1990 when it was narrowly beaten to the top by new entrant 'Bring Your Daughter... To The Slaughter' by Iron Maiden (multi-formats of Iron Maiden's single saw it outsell by Vanilla Ice by just a few hundred copies). Vanilla Ice had been well beaten the previous week by 'Saviour's Day' by Cliff Richard having been number 1 for the 4 previous weeks.

I'm no fan but this quote is a bit silly. Firstly, it is 2018, songs rarely go straight to no1. Secondly, it looks to be no1 next week and could be number one for a long time. Over performing perhaps but under?

I’ll finally have something to thank Sam Smith for if he can prevent that ‘Eastside’ thing ever reaching the top 3.

Gabrielle should be safe for a top 10 album!

Cmon Gabrielle !!! Hope you hold on 👍🏻

Biggest shocks of the week for me at the moment are 1) Jess Glynne looking to debut within the T15 (I know she's a pretty big artist, but was there much hype for this single?), and 2) Stefflon Don's mixtape debuting at the lower end of the T40 (I was sure this would get decent streaming numbers, but guess it's been lost amongst Ariana and Bugzy Malone in the new releases on streaming platforms).

Nice to see Mr Ezra is set to stay number one for my birthday on Sunday. First decent chart topper I will have had since 2012 (which was Sam and the Womp, incidentally).

Love the idea that New Rules, Cold Water, Don't Be So Hard on Yourself (or Fight Song?), Lovers on the Sun and Burn weren't decent but Sam and the Womp was tongue.gif

Gabrielle is holding up well. It’s a nice album so pleased it’s T10.

Ironically George Ezra went back onto top when weather went cold
Sam Smith song is underperforming clearly, was too much buzz from lobby
Does this listing include ACR for George Ezra?

George Ezra isn’t on ACR yet. As his sales went up last week he is safe for another three weeks.

The general answer is that the midweek charts do include ACR.

BTW, welcome to Buzzjack!

It's not cold it's cooler yes we ain't getting the record temperatures anymore but it ain't cold sheesh how do you survive winter just grinds my gears

I'd prefer George over drake but I'm ready for a new number 1

Jess Glynne debuting top 15 on name alone future top 10

Posted by: Dexton 23rd August 2018, 03:46 PM

Jess will easily be #1 in a few weeks, if I’ll Be There managed it then I’d be surprised if this doesn’t (this is also on track to debut higher than IBT too interestingly)

Posted by: SKOB 23rd August 2018, 05:38 PM

When the full week of streaming is taken into account, Jess won't be top 15. The song is #53 on Spotify for example.

Jess is doing better on Apple Music (#18)
Just realised Drake has dropped to #8 on Apple Music (with a 2nd version at 15), that might contribute to him not reclimbing to #1

Jess Glynne has essentially farted this song out in her sleep. But I expect it'll be a future number one challenger.

What can I say, I have high standards biggrin.gif I reviewed all my birthday number ones on my blog last year. It was the one of all the recent years I liked the best!

Because Drake shat those ones out.

I’d like to see a top 30 debut for Marshmello & Bastille!

Best song in the charts right now
