...so I'm stuck in this evening while Mr D* goes out for drinks with football pals whom I do not socialise with very well! I am thinking of entertaining myself by watching a film on Sky/Netflix/Amazon but I'm at a complete loss as to what to watch and thus thought I would turn to Buzzjack for suggestions.
For inspiration and helping you make any suggestions, these are some of the films that I've watched recently-ish and really enjoyed together with some all time favourites: Inside Out The Grand Budapest Hotel Rush Gone Girl Birdman Guardians of the Galaxy The Nightmare Before Christmas Fargo Sister Act Amelie Lord of the Rings Trilogy Bourne films Films I hated / genres I dislike... Horror films in general Transformers and other completely braindead action films Romance! |

If you like more sophisticated movies, Ex-Machina is a very interesting sci-fi movie that has you thinking for hours later. Maybe you should read up about it before you dive in though, some very good performances from some up-and-coming actors.
Kingsman: The Secret Service and Mad Max: Fury Road are two of the greatest action films I've seen in ages but not sure if they'll qualify as too mindless for you especially the latter which is a bit thin on plot. I think maybe you'd like Her too because that's very interesting but it is pretty much just a disguised love story. Captain America: Winter Soldier is regarded as one of the better Marvel movies too on par with GotG so you might like that maybe. Tough list

If you haven't seen it and it's still on Netflix then Exam is an intriguing film to pass an hour and a half.

I'll back up Ex Machina, Exam and Her, both really great, intriguing films.
Also given the other films in that list are recent Oscar hits, you might like The Imitation Game or Boyhood if you've not already seen them? The latter in particular is quite similar to Birdman in it's ways of filmmaking and manipulating of cinematic forms, really wonderful film to watch as well. |

I'm now a bit scared to watch them in case they keep me awake. I probably shouldn't admit that but it's true.  |

I've actually got Kingsman on order from Amazon as I saw it was rated highly by a few people on here, it won't be today's film but should be arriving tomorrow and I'm very much looking forward to it.  I'm interested in Her and I'll look up the Mad Max film - I don't dislike action movies by any means, I just have issues with the Transformers series and ones that are entirely made up of fx scenes of fx characters smashing through fx buildings etc. |

Out of the list so far, I'll definitely give Ex-Machina, Boyhood, Exam and Her a shot first off. Thanks all for the suggestions so far, I'm finding myself getting more and more into films again of late so I'll keep any suggestions in mind for the next few weeks.

Aww that's really adorable  Yeah I only asked because there is so much to get from a *good* horror film and I am aware that a lot of the stuff can be absolute tripe. They are the films that make me think the most and make me go through most emotions. Maybe not when you're alone, but when Mr D* is in too you can hit me up and I can suggest some good ones

If we go down the Oscar route, "Wild" and "Still Alice" are two of the best films that scored nods at the start of this year imo. I don't know how they compare to the films you've recently seen and enjoyed, but they aren't horror, braindead action or romance

Oh i don't go for the modern stuff either really I am talking more 60s, 70s, 80s horror where there was a lot more substance. There is so much to get into from back there, it's a totally different art form to the stuff that is produced now.

Like Jahq, Wild is also my suggestion! A fantastic drama that keeps you intrigued at all times and is a terrific movie.
As also been mentioned many times, Ex_Machina is a great movie and would definitely recommend that I'll try and think of a couple of others in a few minutes

Finished watching Ex Machina and enjoyed it... It had me second and third guessing things all the way through and while I guessed some of it, I didn't get the ending correct at all... I was a bit sad that she left Caleb locked in the room, although I guess that was the proof that she was still AI and not acting in a true human fashion, i.e. not letting emotion get in the way of logical decisions.
Definitely a good shout!  |

Ex Machina was a bit OK-ish for me, looked like it was going to be fab, but disappointed a bit. Ditto Mad Max, so in ya face relentless action.
Great films of 2015 for me (excluding currently at the cinema films) The Martian, Ridley Scott back on form. Ant-man The Man From UNCLE, Guy Ritchie's most entertaining Avengers: Age Of Ultron (FAB) Spy (Melissa McCarthy being herself, amusing enough) Terminator: Genisys Minions (mildly amusing if watching with kids) A Walk In The Woods (Bill Bryson, slow but decent) Absolutely Anything (Pythons, Kylie & Simon Pegg, it's good enough for me) Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (charming senior comedy) |

Exam is being lined up next... just got to make myself some chocolate pasta first as a perfect evening film watching accompaniment.
