This month marks 10 years since Madonna performed at Live Earth - a one off event set up to combat climate change. Madonna concluded the UK concert held at Wembley Stadium in a line-up that included the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Duran Duran, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters. Four songs were performed: the self-penned charity single 'Hey You', 'Ray of Light', 'La Isla Bonita' and 'Hung' Up' - the latter three adopting the sound and choreography of the Confessions Tour. Revisit the full performance below: |

So, so, so good. Everything about is (YES EVEN HEY YOU) was really good. I liked the subtle tweaks to the Confessions versions of the songs too and this is pretty much my favourite live version of Hung Up. It's also the last major TV performance where she felt on top of her game. From the disastrous Big Weekend debut for Hard Candy on it's been sporadic at best.

'Hey You' aside (which remains one of her worst songs ever; 'Imagine' it is not), this is one of my favourite performances from Madonna, or at least one I return to a lot. I love her look, it's slightly Olivia Newton-John in Grease meets Alison Goldfrapp, and the energy is fantastic. The way she moves around the stage and the madness of the crowd; she just totally owns it. It's best shown in 'Ray of Light' I think and it's why I prefer the performance of it here to the one she did on tour a year prior. The Confessions version of 'Hung Up' is one of her very best so I'm glad she brought back that choreography and the segment where she gets the crowd to sing along.

I think she does try to give it her all in the 'Hey You' segment but it's a case of "you can't polish a turd" for me. Agreed about the Big Weekend, I've not actually seen it all but I don't really feel inclined to from what I've seen. Put it this way, you can totally understand why Radio 1 and its audience feel like she's passed it. |
