25th September 2016
It's Kadie Elder for a 4th week on top, still loving my Top 10 finalist in the Buzzjack Song Contest. Talking of, a previous top 10 act for me Kishi Bashi has a new album out, and it's fab, the official single is in at 46, while 2 tracks pop in lower down, a very Pink Floyd-sounding at 75 and a very Jean-Michel Jarre-sounding (via orchestral avante-garde) at 78. Another BJSC act who flopped are also back, Red Sky July at 69 - former members of Texas and Alisha's Attic - and I could make comments about British country music being ageist as far as radio plays go, it doesn't escape my notice that pretty young girlie country tracks get Radio 2 play, and the older, classier country acts, errr, don't. Emelie Sande shoots up to 2, so close to nabbing the top spot in a highly active and fabulous chart (for me, at any rate!) and there are 2 brand new debuts inside the top 10, the blues-ish, quirky fab Cobi at 8, and the ballad Keane-like Tom Chaplin at 9. OK it is Keane. The lead singer having his first solo venture, and it's classic Keane. In at 11, from 1972, because I saw Albert Hammond in concert in Wimborne this week - he hasn't toured for 45 years, and moved the States in 1971 from a successful UK pop song hit-writing machine career, to launch his solo and American songwriter career, the former with initial success for 2 years, before he concentrated on songwriting. It Never rains In Southern California is his best single, I had nostalgic tears in my eyes for it, and his other early 70's singles, only one of which charted in the UK - but not this fab huge American hit which wasn't eligible for my chart at the time due to floppage. Other songs? Little Arrows, When I Need You, One Moment In Time, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, The Air That I Breathe, among many many others. Great to have him back! Big jumps for the Kaiser Chiefs into the 20, Billie Ray Martin into the 30, and Mel C leapfrogs herself with her new single. OneRepublic return again, along with a host of 60's tracks I discovered during AH Gold's Ultimate 60's voting. Cat Stevens is new to me, ditto Kathy Kirby's fab track - I had a few huge pop star faves as a nipper, we're talking 5 or 6 years old, the biggest 2 were Billy Fury (also in the chart) and Kathy Kirby. Mad on 'em I was. 1 1 1 4 FIRST TIME HE KISSED A BOY Kadie Elder 680000 2 15 2 2 HURTS Emeli Sande 142000 3 2 2 3 FAMILIAR Agnes Obel 315000 4 4 2 6 FRIENDS Francis And The Lights featuring Bon Iver 415000 5 6 5 3 NEVER EVER Royksopp featuring Susanne Sundfor 134250 6 3 3 5 GET OVER IT RAT BOY 320600 7 5 5 5 BLOW YOUR MIND (MWAH) Dua Lipa 248200 8 NEW 8 1 DON’T YOU CRY FOR ME Cobi 48000 9 NEW 9 1 QUICKSAND Tom Chaplin 45000 10 10 10 5 BOURBON Gallant 143600 11 NEW 11 1 IT NEVER RAINS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Albert Hammond 37000 12 8 6 7 HER (LOVING YOU) GLADES 311400 13 9 9 5 LOST & FOUND BETSY 156400 14 7 7 8 GEMINI FEED Banks 206700 15 20 15 2 GO! YAS Billie slaying that top 30 *.* it's quite the tune isn't it
The Cobi track is also decent. I heard it a few months ago and wondered why radio 1 or radio 2 for that matter haven't picked it up? Sounds perfect for either station I think. He reminds me of Hozier a little bit which is why ha! Great stuff all round and nice to see Dua in your top 10 This post has been edited by Rob S: Sep 25 2016, 08:52 PM |

Hi John
Kadie Elder unstoppable. Not sure if I will chart Hurts but I think this is the best song Emeli has ever recorded in her career. I'm not yet a massive Emeli fan though. You and JSG love Don't You Cry For Me. Surprised this is not a UK hit because this is the 'Take Me To Church' of the year. Also Quicksand has surprised me in a good way. Nice song. Good chart especially the top 10. |

Hey there John!
Kadie Elder holding on strong there at #1 *.* A definite highlight of BJSC 88 so I'm excited to see what you send to the current contest! 'Anymore' is the only new entry that I'm familiar with here! But that's very good, sounds pretty fresh and current although a shame it won't touch the chart. I need to check out new Kishi Bashi Good stuff overall |

He needs to break into cult known status, music week gave him a plug this week Cheers John Off to the beach now... |
