Can you believe it's Eurovision time once again! Tonight is the first semi final live from Globen in Stockholm, hosted by Petra Mede and last year's winner, Mĺns Zelmerlöw. 18 acts will take to the stage for 10 available spots in the grand final. It's a high quality year and this is the tougher semi of the two. If you're in one of the competing countries you can vote in tonight's show, along with France, Spain and Sweden. Remember that in the UK the semis are now being broacast on BBC Four, with commentary from Scott Mills and Mel Giedroyc AND special guest Sarah Dawn Finer (aka https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_acK30Q25M)
So it's time to stock up on the Absolut and Koppabergs for the TV event of the year!!

As always, wishful hoping for Greece. Taking a chance on Azerbaijan with all the reports of terrible vocals (has a title/lyric ever been truer than in this moment)
Won't be able to watch live from the start due to work, don't know whether to start watching when I get home and catch up on the rest after, or hold back and catch up in one go (How long will it take to have it up on iPlayer )
Jahq, doesn't iPlayer have the 'live restart' option on the website still? You could try that.
I will be enjoying this tonight as a respite from writing my dissertation but for staying productive reasons I don't think I'm going to drink (I will compensate by getting completely trollied on Thursday and Saturday though, dw).
Qualifier wise I am saying:
IN: Greece, Netherlands, Armenia, Russia, Czechia, Cyprus, Austria, Iceland, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malta
OUT: Finland, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia, San Marino, Estonia, Azerbaijan, Montenegro
Difficult to predict...I really hope Austria can get through against the odds but I won't miss any of the others predicted to DNQ...no doubt Azerbaijan and Greece will squeak through but I hope the latter will somehow finally miss with that mess.
Why couldn't last year be the year Czech Republic qualified.
I do hope I can be present for this! My housemates were planning a barbecue annoyingly, but the weather seems to have gone to pot so hopefully this can still happen for me! EXCITED.
Genuinely not heard a single song in this semi.
Struggled to find 10 I like in the first semi but these are the 10 I prefer to go through, Really not liking or clicked at all with Greece

Looks like they are doing an equivalent to Melodifestivalen app voting without it actually counting: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/news?id=vote_to_colour_globe_arena
Seems a bit pointless as we won't be able to see what colour the buildings are without being there unless they put the result on the app, but it could give a good indicator of where the televotes will go if enough people take part (and we can see the results somewhere).
I dont like the entry myself but i would fall to the floor with shock if Azerbaijan do not qualify. They are one of those countries that seem to be safe each year despite not always having good entries.
Really excited for tonight!
Only heard Malta so far and love their song

I'd be very happy with Cyprus too, Armenia have pushed them out of my top 10 due to their amazing rehearsals. In fact I'd be very happy with all of them to qualify except Montenegro, San Marino and Moldova as even Greece and Bosnia have clicked really well with me following rehearsals.

Still sticking with my predictions from the other day here, Cyprus could very well take a spot from the likes of Greece or Czech Republic but I'm convinced it will be 10 from the 10 I've bolded and Cyprus. I was going to say that I expect Armenia's odds to be slashed tonight, but they are already shortening quickly. That said, I think they will be second favourites behind Russia at 10pm!
Can't wait, gutted I'm going to miss semi 2 because we're going out for drinks as one of my friends is leaving for the summer as oon as we finish uni :/ So i'll have to watch that later in the night when I'm back.

A statement on the Russian jury voting skandal
This is actually one of the first times since I started to properly follow Eurovision that I have not heard the majority of the sangs.
I've only heard parts of Russia, Belgium and The Netherlands so far

These might fall too in line with my favourites in certain places but I'll be depressed if Croatia get through and when Iceland get through so it's not all bias. Feel like there should be room for Greece too.
I'm in my seat ready for this!! I thought I had a nosebleed seat but actually the view is really good. I'm side on at the end of the stage so can't quite see all the led screens that go with the stage
Welcome to the party Silas!
Tack Vulker!! I'm so excited for this.
Hope everyone enjoys the show, I'll look forward to reading everyone's comments after it has finished!
I'm ready and waiting. Gone into this without hearing any of the songs apart from the UK and Italy (Liam's fault for whoring it out on Dubtrack ), so looking forward to hearing some gems!
Same situation as Ryan basically as my laptop is being my television tonight so my hot takes will be relegated to after the show (or if I have something I REALLY need to share, my twitter). Going to switch it up and watch on the YouTube stream rather than BBC and see how that goes since the UK can't vote in this semi anyway.
Laters skanks x
Kind of want this semi to be done with so I know which of my favourites I'll have lost. But I'm still up for seeing how they all turn out on the stage.
And I'm remaining here because I relegate myself to a splitscreen so I don't have to wait to read reactions.
I kind of only know 4 songs in this, oops.
Heroes
Really hyped for this semi!
Hype.
Oh cringe he sat too close to him there.
shall unfortunately be missing this as I have a film to watch but OH MY GOD was this semi good. So much quality
I'm not sure a band of OOMPA LOOMPA children is really what this called for
I was going to say this arrangement of Heroes sounds marginally better than normal but it's just going into the normal generic bit later isn't it... or NOW. (I seem to be a bit behind)
Miming oompa lumpas as well!
It was just the version he did on the MF final, Iz
Getting my Eurovision on. I think I caught up on a few a few weeks ago, but no idea what to expect.
These are some really poor hair extensions Petra is sporting.
Can I vote for the band Europe?
Grab your towels
Oh MY, time to EXECUTE the stylist
Life has been harder on Jessica Cornish than I could ever have imagined
Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away: By no means a bad song, it's actually quite decent. But that's really as far as I can push it, I'd be happy with it going through, but I wouldn't care either way. She's also BEYOND shouty which is rather offputting, really spoils the chorus. Fashion nightmare aswell. 7/10
9/10 Finland
Loved that, so much fun!
Sandhja could have had a better outfit.
As much as I want to support Finland this just isn't that special. And her voice is sounding quite terminal tonight.
I'm watching this tomorrow, so I can fast forward through the crap ones best thing going forward.
What a CLUNKY hook, too wordy
"Rising Sun"? Fight for a utopia? Greece? Please tell me this isn't neo-Nazi propaganda.
9/10 Finland
0/10 Greece
Gosh that was horrific!
Actually I know this one too (and love it) so that makes 5.
But yes, the Pontic Greek and ethnic vibes makes this an essential for me. I feel like you're reading into it too much Brett although that's a bit unfortunate.
Although everyone else seems to hate it. Where's the ethnic love?
Greece: Argo - Utopian Land: Well, that was a mess. I'm usually such a Greek fan aswell, but that song literally had no idea what it wanted to be. The last 30 seconds in particular was just bizarrely messy and not in anyway that could be described as 'hot'. It had a melody though so it gains something for that, not a total loss. 4.5/10
01 Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away / 7/10
02 Greece: Argo - Utopian Land / 4.5/10
Well, this is pleasingly SHODDY and flat. Not sure I could have asked for more.
9/10 Finland
0/10 Greece
5.5/10 Moldova
Started ok but felt out of tune and got worse as went on
Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars: My favourite so far, it doesn't really sound like something that'll qualify, but it reminds me of something like Tanja's Amazing which I really liked for being nothing other than very catchy, even if it's not remarkable. Catchy dance-pop will always do me just fine! Weird performance though.
01 Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars / 8/10
02 Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away / 7/10
03 Greece: Argo - Utopian Land / 4.5/10
Kallay got ROBBED
This is rather good tho, I love how raw his voice is
Ahh yes, the token gravel voiced singer. Yay diversity and all that but do fuck off.
I am impressed with how non-awful Moldova was. Probably the least woeful vocal I've seen her give.
I like the whistlers.
I feel like he takes that VERY seriously, good for him.
9/10 Finland
0/10 Greece
5.5/10 Moldova
3/10 Hungary
He was hot but gosh those vocals
Gravel voice is the only reason I've paid attention to this song at all, it's wonderful (for my kind ). Wouldn't be a good one to end Hungary's qualifying run with as it's so much more involving than their drab attempt last time.
A pleasingly dramatic performance, hopefully that'll work in its favour.
So we just had the best song. Time to finish this bitch
Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer: Probably the strongest song so far in terms of sounding quite professional, definitely sounds like something I'd expect to qualify. I don't particularly like his voice, it's all very Ben Haenow, but I'm willing to let it pass for the quality of the song. 8/10
01 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer / 8/10
02 Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars / 8/10
03 Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away / 7/10
04 Greece: Argo - Utopian Land / 4.5/10
The Croatian singer is wearing a particularly ambitious Bake-Off creation.
9/10 Finland
6/10 Croatia

That was quite nice but that's literally it!
Well that didn't work for me QUITE as much as it did on record, but it's obviously safe.
Well that's the most surprisingly good performance so far tonight for Croatia actually, underwhelming and ill-advised dress reveal otherwise. Middle of the pack song for me in this semi but she's singing very well for me.
Croatia: Nina Kraljic - Lighthouse: Ugh, f*** my sweepstake, I can do without that again. Quite a racket and everything was very underwhelming. The first outfit was vile, the reveal was obvious, the reveal was crap, the key change was crap, the hook was weak, her voice was shouty. There is an okay song under there but I think I'd rather not here it again. 4/10
01 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer / 8/10
02 Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars / 8/10
03 Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away / 7/10
04 Greece: Argo - Utopian Land / 4.5/10
05 Croatia: Nina Kraljic - Lighthouse / 4/10
Best performance so far. The weird hand movements, fabulous dress change, great vocals.
LMAO OH GOD IT'S THE WIWIBLOGGS GUYS

This Dutch entry seems to be going for the small but sizeable pastoral straight male Eurovision fanbase, rather successfully.

The staging, the look, the vocals and the song are all incredible! Absolutely loved that and easily one of my favourites already
Ugh, this one sounds annoyingly like something that's going to do REALLY WELL. It's fine, but bland radio filler type fare and nothing more.
Just tuned in, what a dull entry to come in on.
To be fair to him, this is sounding better now than it did on dubtrack.
Well that's coming across rather well live, it may not be as out of contention as I thought it'd be.
Still nowhere near my favourites but it's being sung well. Ugh.
ooh, DRAMA *.*
The Netherlands: Douwe Bob - Slow Down: Best left in about 6th at Melodifestivalen by some 60 year old pensioner. A few questions. Why is he squinting? Why did he randomly pause for no reason? Not my cup of tea in the slightest, it's not bad and it very much stands its own as being a decent song, I just would never listen to it out of choice. 5/10
01 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer / 8/10
02 Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars / 8/10

Wasn't sure on the studio version but that was stunning live! Loved it!
I love Slow Down, though the break in the middle is completely jarring.
Only just realised how much Iveta looks like Nicole Scherzinger.
Oh my GOD that was EVERYTHING I could have wanted. STRONG VOX, dramatic pyro's, wind machine, smoke, amazing.
San Marino must be the smallest country in Eurovision this year, although not the smallest potential nation that could potentially take part.
Oh my god. It was literally flawless. Everything. I cannot. Amazing. I'm dead
Ahhhhhhhhhhh she needs to f***ing win
Armenia:
this entry HAS to do well, surely? Great vocal and performance.
This has become an utterly incredible song over the months, it was quite a shock at first. But it's a really strong construction and that's a very memorable performance. Enough to see it safe for Saturday.
It's the Scatman!
From the SUBLIME to the RIDICULOUS
Armenia: Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave: I have no idea what I think of that at all. I don't really think that's one to take in on first listen because there seemed to be a lot to take in. It kind of grabbed me but it sort of lost me towards the end, I was expecting it to kick up a gear but it never really did. And the climax to all that zooming at the start was beyond anti climatic but still, as a whole song... I'm really not sure but I'm assuming I'll get another listen on Saturday to figure that out. 6.5/10
01 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer / 8/10

I can't at San Marino...tragic!
omg old man doing disco song *_*
please can this qualify just for the banter?
We did need a BREATHER after such an incredible performance. Thank you Christer

That was absolutely hideous! Gosh awful
That was oddly addictive, obviously completely shit of course, but addictive
Petra knows her audience.
Petra is on FINE FORM tonight, not that I expected anything less. A group w*** joke and the 'and girl' joke too. yaas.
I must say the humor from Petra is so on point. Amazing hosting.
ah, the likely winner up next, hope this impresses.
Ok, this performance is so CHEAP (not in the literal sense, I'm sure it cost loads, but it looks awful and is a total rip off)
I must say, this is a fabulously staged performance. Russia absolutely loves the fabulous.
Well, this doesn't sound like a winner to me.

That was pretty good but was hoping for a little more!
I mean obviously the song is EXCELLENT, but Sweden still strikes me as more likely to win
Song is pretty good but I don't think people would be calling it as a winner now if it weren't for that performance. Which mostly looks cheap but the bit where he lies down actually had me interested for a bit.
(still, someone come along to stop Russia strolling to victory)
wow what a performance!! even if it's obviously inspired from Mans's staging.
Well, this is definitely doing it for me and the generic slice of voxy ballad I was looking for from tonight
Incredible performance from Russia...but I hope that's not enough for it to win the 'song' contest, because the song just isn't all that compared to some of the others this year.

Really beautiful and exactly the song I like!
Czechia has been underwhelming me up to now but that's a solid performance, actually willing that on to qualify now.
How come Cyprus get in-camera visual effects and the other contestants don't? Doesn't seem fair.
Yeah, very Somebody Told Me.
This isn't terrible, it's the kind of thing I imagine spoiling an MF heat, but it's quite listenable.

Hate The Killers so that was awful, exactly the kind of song I hate!
Omg Loin D'ici *.*
The camera is all over the place *.*
I've been anticipating their performance so so much. I really need this to qualify - it's the best rock song the contest has seen for 6 years. But I'm not as worried as I was after that performance, they're killing it.
Our esteemed PM Call Me Dave once claimed to be a fan of The Killers. He's probably forgotten that by now, so I doubt he'd spot the resemblance.

Loved that, really nice song and loved the staging/dress!
Sweet (and inexplicably one of my favourites this year in studio form) but doomed.
That's my favourite song of the year (out of the now 18 or so I know), she did very well so hopefully she makes it through
Loin D'ici is quite lovely actually, hope it qualifies now (and there aren't many foreign language entries so yay variety)
The Estonian is easy on the eye, but not so easy on the ear.
Ugh I can tell now this is going to be the one I don't like that even though everyone thought it was going to be out qualifies ANYWAY.

Estonia was, bleh. Not keen on his voice or the song, or any of it really.

Really enjoyed that, great vocals and nice song!
They weren't lying with the rehearsals, she really CAN'T sing
Good song underneath all that, I still feel like this might finally catch them out though.
Estonia's song was seriously dull and Azerbaijan is let down by the vocal performance.
Hmm, having heard so much praise for Azerbaijan I was expecting something undeniable and huge. That was fine, but not one I'd rush to listen to.
Missed song 10-14 </3
Sometimes, counter-programming doesn't work.
Samra's voice...
If she got to the final of The Voice in Azerbaijan you have to worry for the quality of those knocked out beforehand
Bopping along to Montenegro <3 The guitar work on this is so energetic. And really quite a great song inside that.
It's not going anywhere unfortunately but as long as we get Cyprus through I'm willing to sacrifice this.

Montenegro as bad as expected then
Time for GRETA to shine *.*
If there has to be a rock song in the final then it's definitely Montenegro over Cyprus. Didn't think it'd be this way before the show but here we are. Very impressive vocally. And the energy was on fleek

Iceland's entry sounding and looking great
As expected, dramatic, beautiful and a winning performance. COME ON ICELAND.
Okay Greta is so much better than I was expecting. I am VERY slowly coming to terms with the song being good. VERY

Hear Them Calling is probably the package of the year, yes it's a bit cheap reusing the same screen thing as Mans but the song is KILLER and Greta performs the shit out of it.

Absolute mess but kind of good in a horrific way!
He's so gay it's so funny to see him sing about a girl and perform with one. Ha.
Just realized that the last three songs are all performed by the returning Eurovision artists.
I have too many favourites in this semi already Bosnia don't be so good! The rap and the big ballad is such a good combination though. Can't see this one not qualifying.

Malta's entry reminds me of an Emeli Sande/Naughty Boy collab.
That was like Jess Glynne meets Naughty Boy.

Malta. I'm liking the song but the performance could have been better.
I'm so glad I can't vote in this semi, I'd be all over the place (before restricting myself to Cyprus for pragmatism). Malta also a very good song and one I want to qualify.
Just let it be over with.

Hmm, that Maltese entry is very average. I was expecting something much, much better given Seventh Wonder is so fab (granted, the past 14 years have been HARD on Ira it would seem).
I've just realised Russia is basically a BWO song with MARGINALLY better vox. I can get on board with that.
Just voted for Armenia Would've voted for Croatia as well but I would need to vote again for Armenia and cba to top up my credit because I don't have enough for three votes oops
Austria is definitely my favorite from this semi-final !
Was a good show overall, Hungary was a nice(-looking) surprise and Russia looked so cheap and cliché
Oh god not Lynda again. JOKE'S WORN DRY SVERIGE.

Lynda????? Where???
A little Lynda goes a long way
Omg I swear to god, always hear the same songs year in year out.
Not because I'm Dutch, but The Netherlands was the only different one.

I love Lynda but actually happier to see Sarah out of character on the BBC, she deserves to be known outside Sweden for her own brilliant singing and personality.
I think final predictions after performances are:
Russia
Malta
Armenia
Iceland
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Hungary
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Netherlands
Estonia
Could easily swap Greece or Croatia for Estonia or Netherlands but I'm going to be pessimistic.
OMG Amir's smile is everything
Ooh they f***ed up with barei there haha
I heard Amir today on the radio
We haven't had any proper rock for quite a WHILE here (believe me, I've been keeping track) so Cyprus and Montenegro absolutely get points in the different category.
Oh, is Azerbaijan not likely to progress?
Definitely my favourite tonight.
The *definitive* scores from yours truly ~
10.0 ARMENIA (Iveta Mukuchyan)
9.0 MONTENEGRO (Highway)
8.5 NETHERLANDS (Douwe Bob)
8.5 ICELAND (Greta Salóme)
8.0 RUSSIA (Sergey Lazarev)
8.0 SAN MARINO (Serhat)
8.0 ESTONIA (Jüri Pootsmann)
8.0 CYPRUS (Minus One)
7.5 GREECE (Argo)
7.5 AZERBAIJAN (Samra)
7.5 AUSTRIA (ZOË)
7.0 HUNGARY (Freddie)
6.5 FINLAND (Sandjha)
6.5 MALTA (Ira Losco)
6.0 BOSNIA & ZARAGOVINA (Dalal & Deen)
5.0 MOLDOVA (Lidia Isac)
5.0 CROATIA (Nina Kraljić)
5.0 CZECH REP (Gabriela Gunčíková)
YAY they have, that's good.
Loving the TENSE music
Azerbaijan
Russia
Netherlands
Hungary
That have qualified so far.
Can't believe the Netherlands are through with such an awful song :/
OMG YES AUSTRIA YES YES YES
OMG YES FOR ZOOEEEEEEEEE !!!!
So happy for her, couldn't believe it !
This is NOT going as expected, but YAS at Czech Republic too
A first final place for the Czech Republic.
Omg does that mean GREECE out?? Surely Iceland are sailing through.
WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. f***.
So so happy with that!!
All my top 10 bar Finland (7th) and Iceland (9th)! So happy with Malta/Netherlands/Austria in particular
VERY shocked about Iceland, thought that was one of the most polished of the night!
Iceland not qualifying!?!
Yassssss at Greece FINALLY flopping, well deserved! Yay for Austria and Netherlands getting through too
Gutted for Iceland. Otherwise fairly happy with the result!
Not a bad set of results except Iceland and Moldova being cruelly robbed
Greece failing takes the sting off Iceland flopping though, surely a baffling one FOR THE AGES
As if Iceland didnt get through. Outrage
f***ing HELL at Iceland and Greece out. Iceland especially sounded like it'd destroy the competition.
On the other hand, there are no words to describe the feelings of relief I had when Cyprus were announced through
Thank god Ira survived...was so worried there, I never thought she'd get past Greta.
Beyond ecstatic that Croatia, Armenia and Hungary are through. My favorite three of the night probably. So happy for Czech Republic. A deserved qualification despite the very tough draw!
BOO at Finland and Iceland not going through
(I kinda expected Finland after reading people's predictions but what happened with Iceland???)
Azerbaijan IN and Iceland OUT?
Oh my god at Iceland Very shocked at that, I'd have had it as one of the safest!! Ecstatic for Austria though after a briliant performance.
Yass Douwe Bob, my pussy is slayed.
I'm actually really happy to see Croatia and Czech Republic back in the final finally despite them having kinda middle-of-the-pack songs for this semi. It just really stings with Greta being out with such a great song (although with Never Forget also being severely underrated, maybe I should have seen this coming, I just never though there was a chance). How did Azerbaijan seriously get past that?
Greece AND Bosnia getting their first DNQs officially feels like the end of an era (and with entries that I really loved too )
yasss Gabriela!
Iceland... come on, this was their first (and I guess last) entry I liked.
Yay for Austria though (and Cyprus, of course, but I never counted them as a DNQ)!
Iceland is baffling, there's one of my each way bets gone
So happy for the Netherlands though and Czech Republic (mainly for it being their first qualification, the song is just 'ok'). And delighted that Greece aren't untouchable, that more than makes up for Iceland.
What the UTTER FUCK at ICELAND OUT under that HUNGARIAN TOSS
I'm FURIOUS!
(OMG YAY AUSTRIA)
Gutted about Iceland, again.
I'm so pissed off Hungary and Croatia made it over Iceland. One of the few songs I properly loved.
This semi was all kinds of tragic apart from like 7 songs
I cannot understand Iceland out AT ALL. Greece had to fail eventually and hopefully this means they won't just send the same tuneless ethno-drivel so often. If Greta is 11th it'll be even more annoying, though Hungary and Malta were both much, much weaker.
I didn't expect all of Austria, Croatia, Hungary and the Czechs to make it through but I guess whatever caused the Icelandic blowout must've helped at least one of them over the line into 10th place. Azerbaijan heaved itself up with whatever they did to turn off Samra's microphone because that first rehearsal was dreadful.
ICELAND
Aww. I wish we had qualified, Greta was great live
I CAN'T at Iceland DNQ!
At least they gave a winner there for TBO Rejects!
this was a very good semifinal.
My ranking:
01 Armenia
02 Hungary
03 Croatia
04 Montenegro
05 Russia
06 Czech Republic
07 Netherlands
08 Iceland
09 Malta
10 Bosnia
11 Azerbaijan
12 Austria
13 Moldova
14 Cyprus
15 Finland
16 Greece
17 Estonia
18 San Marino
I'M SO SAD FOR DEEN
I really liked 13 of them and 9 got through so yay! upset about iceland.
San Marino's song in understatedly amazing.
Oops sorry these are late, Got caught up but these would have been my predicts
01 The Netherlands: Douwe Bob - Slow Down 11/10
02 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer 10/10
03 Russia: Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One 10/10

11 Czech Republic: Gabriela Gunčíková - I Stand 06/10
12 Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away 6/10
13 Greece: Argo - Utopian Land 6/10
14 Bosnia & Herzegovina: Dalal & Deen ft. Ana Rucner & Jala - Ljubav je 5.5/10
15 Croatia: Nina Kraljic - Lighthouse 5/10
16 Azerbaijan: Samra - Miracle 04/10
17 San Marino: Serhat - I Didn't Know 2/10
Poor Iceland
I really believe the 6th-11th place region was sooooo close. Won't even surprise me if there was a tie with Iceland in 11th. Can't imagine anyone else being 11th tbh.
Whereas semi two should be very top heavy and the dnq point will probably be very scarce.
Guys, sorry to be a bit dense here... What would happen if Australia won? My assumption is they wouldn't host it in Aus. So, would they like... choose a country to host it in? Or would it fall to the runner up?
They finally posted Amir's performance at the semi final 1 :
First things first, here are the results from my scorecard tonight:
09.5 Iceland: Greta Salóme - Hear Them Calling
09.0 Russia: Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One
08.5 Armenia: Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave
08.5 Czech Republic: Gabriela Gunčíková - I Stand

08.0 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer

05.0 Greece: Argo - Utopian Land
04.5 Montenegro: Highway - The Real Thing
02.0 San Marino: Serhat - I Didn't Know
So of course the massive shock was Iceland, I can't quite work out how they didn't make it. My only theory is that juries heavily marked her down for lack of originality with the screens, and if so that could put Sergey in a spot of bother on Saturday, and the dark staging preventing a connection between Greta and the audience as I've worried about all Eurovision season. Aside from that, I have to be pleased with the results and even though Croatia and Austria weren't in my top 10 I do really like both studio versions so I'm very happy they have made it. A little surprised at the Azerbaijan vocals hate in here, that was so so so many leagues ahead of any other vocals Samra has put in over the last two weeks and of course the backing vocals helped but I was so pleasantly surprised, of course many of you won't have been aware of the low bar set but still!
Ira underwhelmed a little for me, you can tell that scrapping their original hi-tech concept left the performance a little empty. Overjoyed for Czech Republic, Gabriela put in a stunner of a vocal as always! And Sergey is surely going to landslide this, unless my lack of originality theory as mentioned above will hurt his jury score heavily, my whole family were very impressed despite not wanting to be due to the aforementioned lack of originality with screens. Cyprus really deserved their qualification too, absolutely fantastic camerawork and probably the best in the whole semi-final.
Not sure if anyone saw it but there was political chaos in the press conference between Armenia and Azerbaijan as Iveta was waving a Nagorno-Karabakh flag in the green room during the recaps, something that had mysteriously disappeared by the time we returned to the green room to see her qualify - something tells me the EBU were on their case. Both of them got asked about it by the press and I imagine sanctions are coming Armenia's way any minute now!
But overall a very good night, just a shame for Iceland and that Russia have probably wrapped the victory up with their draw when it was looking like we could've had a close contest.
Oh and another "in your face" moment for the "political voting" moaners with 2 more countries losing 100% records, proof that if your song isn't good enough you aren't getting the votes!
Lol the icelandic commentator just posted on snapchat earlier today that when he entered his commenting booth (lol idk what it's called) he had a gift package from Russia lmao.
Also, this:
The EBU announced on 10 May 2016 that they were investigating reports of possible rule violations after Russian professional jury member Anastasia Stotskaya livestreamed footage through the live-streaming social media site Periscope, showing the Russian jury's deliberation during the jury rehearsal of the first semi-final on 9 May.[93] The video showed a jury member not paying attention to the Dutch performance, as well as a glimpse of Stotskaya's jury voting form showing notes evaluating performances. Another jury member states during the Armenian performance that she will support Armenia "because [her] husband is Armenian".[19] The video also shows jury members on their phones during other performances. The rules of the contest stipulate that all jury members are to evaluate performances individually, without discussing the results with other jury members, a stipulation that was clearly violated by the Russian jury.[94]
(taken from Wikipedia)
Yeah the EBU chucked out that Russian juror and a replacement one will be ready for the final. I assume they took the jury result from the remaining 4 jurors, I'm not sure if it has been fully explained what they did but we'll know on Saturday!
Was late watching I'm so surprised Iceland didn't make it. For me Netherlands,Cyprus,Austria and Russia were the stand outs,I love the Russian song and staging and i still think they will be the ones to beat on Saturday night. I really want Ireland to qualify in semi 2,the final is much more exciting when your own country is in.
Good to see Hungary qualify
iTunes update:
92. Joe & Jake - You're Not Alone (United Kingdom)
413. Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One (Russia)
592. Frans - If I Were Sorry (Sweden)
596. Douwe Bob - Slow Down (The Netherlands)
845. Amir - J'ai cherché (France)
1224. Zoë - Loin d'ici (Austria)
1226. Freddie - Pioneer (Hungary)
1447. Minus One - Alter Ego (Cyprus)
Sergey & Douwe doing much better than I thought on iTunes. I'm disappointed there's no sign of Iveta though
I still don't get why is Russia so hyped up. Yes he peformed well but I found that special effects annoying - it is like Russia is just showing off, the effects have nothing to do with the song - Mans had special effects last year but they at least made some sense and went well with the song.
Anyway, I am so happy Nina went through, quite a few Croatians are not very supportive of her so I'm glad she shut all those haters down. However, I think that designer of the dress should be fired...
And I also want Nicky to qualify because he is such a nice guy and is so proud and excited to do this. He had 2 very good performances at Irish and Israeli parties so hopefully he will be able to do the same on semi tomorrow.

7/10 isn't bad! Iceland the only big loss for me. Even though she was only 9th in the rankings, if I think about what I want to go back and listen to, Austria was definitely one of the most charming of the night, very likeable. I was happy for the Czechs making it through too, even though they weren't in my chosen 10.
Just caught up with all the results, as with everyone I'm surprised and gutted that Iceland are out but the performance could've been a lot better and the 'screen' thing was done better by Russia and Sweden already, good song though!
I've got a hunch that Austria are going to surprise us, thinking Kedvesem in 2011, certainly with the second half placement! Also Azeri vocals weren't that bad? I mean they weren't the best but the song was strong enough and they didn't detract from the performance as much as Finland and Moldova.
Best entries of the night has to be Russia, Austria, Azerbaijan (Not bad could grow on me), Croatia (hoping to win, I really love Croatia's entry) and Malta (which really sounded like a Jess Glynne track to me). Overall though I really thought Iceland's entry was the best of the lot in my opinion, how on earth did that completely miss
And I bet Armenia and Azerbaijan will give 12 points to each other in the final nothing new there.
And did San Marino run out of singers, is that the best they could send.
Could Jedward represent San Marino next year
Official statement from the EBU regarding Armenia's actions yesterday:
Just re-watched the show on YouTube without the BBC commentary and I have to say I was amazed by 'The Grey People' interval act. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was so tastefully done, very moving and the ending gave me goosebumps. Shame on the BBC that thought it was a better idea to have Mel Giedroyc flirting with some of the contestants in a sketch rather than show this.
I do love the little Mel and Sarah Dawn Finer inserts that we had but put them on the red button or on the website or as a little 10 minute intro before the show starts, don't force us to watch them instead of the interval acts that are supposed to be for us. I'm not surprised the BBC are receiving criticism from some media outlets, I really don't know why they have to do this every single year especially with intervals acts as good as this one was.
The BBCs coverage is so poor. They insist on giving that dr Eurovision twat airtime, don't show most of the interval and then slag off half the show and voting. Coverage damages the nations view of the contest. The media is the reason we don't take this seriously anymore
