BuzzJack Music Forum _ Eurovision Song Contest _ Eurovision Song Contest 2016 · Semi Final One

Posted by: AdamAloud 10th May 2016, 10:11 AM

Can you believe it's Eurovision time once again! Tonight is the first semi final live from Globen in Stockholm, hosted by Petra Mede and last year's winner, Mĺns Zelmerlöw. 18 acts will take to the stage for 10 available spots in the grand final. It's a high quality year and this is the tougher semi of the two. If you're in one of the competing countries you can vote in tonight's show, along with France, Spain and Sweden. Remember that in the UK the semis are now being broacast on BBC Four, with commentary from Scott Mills and Mel Giedroyc AND special guest Sarah Dawn Finer (aka https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_acK30Q25M)

So it's time to stock up on the Absolut and Koppabergs for the TV event of the year!!

I'm really looking forward to Austria, Croatia and Finland performances ! Especially since they're not favourites, I hope they can get through to the finale...

As always, wishful hoping for Greece. Taking a chance on Azerbaijan with all the reports of terrible vocals (has a title/lyric ever been truer than in this moment)

Won't be able to watch live from the start due to work, don't know whether to start watching when I get home and catch up on the rest after, or hold back and catch up in one go thinking.gif (How long will it take to have it up on iPlayer unsure.gif)

Posted by: LexC 10th May 2016, 11:08 AM

Jahq, doesn't iPlayer have the 'live restart' option on the website still? You could try that.

I will be enjoying this tonight as a respite from writing my dissertation but for staying productive reasons I don't think I'm going to drink (I will compensate by getting completely trollied on Thursday and Saturday though, dw).

Qualifier wise I am saying:

IN: Greece, Netherlands, Armenia, Russia, Czechia, Cyprus, Austria, Iceland, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malta
OUT: Finland, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia, San Marino, Estonia, Azerbaijan, Montenegro

Posted by: gooddelta 10th May 2016, 11:27 AM

Difficult to predict...I really hope Austria can get through against the odds but I won't miss any of the others predicted to DNQ...no doubt Azerbaijan and Greece will squeak through but I hope the latter will somehow finally miss with that mess.

Likewise, but for exams. As much as I do drink these days anyway.

18 ► Malta: Ira Losco - Walk On Water

Though part of that is just hoping Russia will get out of the way in being such an obvious winner, it's a cool song. I let my country biases based on who's done well recently get in the way here. It's a very tight margin in this semi, I know I'll be losing at least two or three songs I love - really would like to see Finland, Croatia (for that country bias) and San Marino in too and I can't deny the thought of Czech Republic getting their first qualifier as much as it's a boring song compared to last year.

THINK

01 ► Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away
02 ► Greece: Argo - Utopian Land

03 ► Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars
04 ► Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer

18 ► Malta: Ira Losco - Walk On Water

Scared for Cyprus I must admit, if that doesn't make it through this will be a disaster. Cyprus and Greece actually, it's really too good to be their only DNQ. Azerbaijan, I'll be a bit sad to lose that one but it seems inevitable if what I've been hearing is true.

Only thing that is a bit off about that prediction for me are those four in the second half, it seems weird that they'd ALL be out when bias has been towards the second half most times but all of them have conceivable reasons to fail. Would love to see Zoe if any out of those four but I can't see it yet.

Why couldn't last year be the year Czech Republic qualified. cry.gif

Posted by: Robot 10th May 2016, 12:47 PM

I do hope I can be present for this! My housemates were planning a barbecue annoyingly, but the weather seems to have gone to pot so hopefully this can still happen for me! EXCITED.

Genuinely not heard a single song in this semi.

Struggled to find 10 I like in the first semi but these are the 10 I prefer to go through, Really not liking or clicked at all with Greece

01 ► Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away

Looks like they are doing an equivalent to Melodifestivalen app voting without it actually counting: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/news?id=vote_to_colour_globe_arena

Seems a bit pointless as we won't be able to see what colour the buildings are without being there unless they put the result on the app, but it could give a good indicator of where the televotes will go if enough people take part (and we can see the results somewhere).

Posted by: pippa 10th May 2016, 03:27 PM

I dont like the entry myself but i would fall to the floor with shock if Azerbaijan do not qualify. They are one of those countries that seem to be safe each year despite not always having good entries.

I'd be very happy with Cyprus too, Armenia have pushed them out of my top 10 due to their amazing rehearsals. In fact I'd be very happy with all of them to qualify except Montenegro, San Marino and Moldova as even Greece and Bosnia have clicked really well with me following rehearsals.

Still sticking with my predictions from the other day here, Cyprus could very well take a spot from the likes of Greece or Czech Republic but I'm convinced it will be 10 from the 10 I've bolded and Cyprus. I was going to say that I expect Armenia's odds to be slashed tonight, but they are already shortening quickly. That said, I think they will be second favourites behind Russia at 10pm!

A statement on the Russian jury voting skandal

QUOTE
Following constructive talks between EBU and RTR, Russia’s participating broadcaster, RTR proposed to withdraw the respective jury member who produced the video recording. As a consequence, the EBU declared the voting result of the respective judge invalid. The other four judges submitted a valid jury vote. RTR will have the opportunity to provide a replacement judge for the Grand Final on Saturday 14 May.

In a statement to the EBU, Russian broadcaster RTR expressed regret at the actions of its' juror. RTR has also apologised to Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS and Armenian broadcaster AMPTV for the online broadcast of their performances.

During its investigation the EBU sought advice from PwC's independent observer, in line with protocol for the event.

The EBU does not consider it a breach of the rules to stream a video online from the jury deliberation, as long as individual rankings, combined rankings or jury points are kept confidential until after the Grand Final.

Nevertheless, the EBU regards the actions of the person involved as not in keeping with the spirit of the competition and potentially prejudicial as it imposes a potential risk of accidentally revealing results.

The independent notary present at the jury gathering confirmed that the voting was conducted in accordance with the rules.

"The broadcast of the Jury Semi-Finals and Jury Final is an internal transmission, not meant for public distribution," said Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of the EBU.

"The credibility of the professional juries is a critically important aspect of the competition. We are satisfied with RTR's proposal, which reflects their understanding of what is and what isn’t appropriate behaviour of a judge for the Eurovision Song Contest,” said Dr. Frank Dieter Freiling, Chairman of the contest’s governing body, the Reference Group.

Final predictions:

01 ► Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away
02 ► Greece: Argo - Utopian Land
03 ► Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars
04 ► Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer
05 ► Croatia: Nina Kraljić - Lighthouse
06 ► The Netherlands: Douwe Bob - Slow Down
07 ► Armenia: Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave
08 ► San Marino: Serhat - I Didn't Know
09 ► Russia: Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One
10 ► Czech Republic: Gabriela Gunčíková - I Stand
11 ► Cyprus: Minus One - Alter Ego
12 ► Austria: ZOË - Loin d'ici
13 ► Estonia: Jüri Pootsmann - Play
14 ► Azerbaijan: Samra - Miracle
15 ► Montenegro: Highway - The Real Thing
16 ► Iceland: Greta Salóme - Hear Them Calling
17 ► Bosnia & Herzegovina: Dalal & Deen feat. Ana Rucner and Jala - Ljubav Je
18 ► Malta: Ira Losco - Walk On Water

These might fall too in line with my favourites in certain places but I'll be depressed if Croatia get through and when Iceland get through so it's not all bias. Feel like there should be room for Greece too.

Same situation as Ryan basically as my laptop is being my television tonight so my hot takes will be relegated to after the show (or if I have something I REALLY need to share, my twitter). Going to switch it up and watch on the YouTube stream rather than BBC and see how that goes since the UK can't vote in this semi anyway.

Kind of want this semi to be done with so I know which of my favourites I'll have lost. But I'm still up for seeing how they all turn out on the stage.

And I'm remaining here because I relegate myself to a splitscreen so I don't have to wait to read reactions.

Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away: By no means a bad song, it's actually quite decent. But that's really as far as I can push it, I'd be happy with it going through, but I wouldn't care either way. She's also BEYOND shouty which is rather offputting, really spoils the chorus. Fashion nightmare aswell. 7/10

As much as I want to support Finland this just isn't that special. And her voice is sounding quite terminal tonight.

Although everyone else seems to hate it. sad.gif Where's the ethnic love?

Posted by: Robot 10th May 2016, 07:21 PM

Greece: Argo - Utopian Land: Well, that was a mess. I'm usually such a Greek fan aswell, but that song literally had no idea what it wanted to be. The last 30 seconds in particular was just bizarrely messy and not in anyway that could be described as 'hot'. It had a melody though so it gains something for that, not a total loss. 4.5/10

Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars: My favourite so far, it doesn't really sound like something that'll qualify, but it reminds me of something like Tanja's Amazing which I really liked for being nothing other than very catchy, even if it's not remarkable. Catchy dance-pop will always do me just fine! Weird performance though.

Gravel voice is the only reason I've paid attention to this song at all, it's wonderful (for my kind biggrin.gif ). Wouldn't be a good one to end Hungary's qualifying run with as it's so much more involving than their drab attempt last time.

A pleasingly dramatic performance, hopefully that'll work in its favour.

Posted by: 💯 10th May 2016, 07:28 PM

So we just had the best song. Time to finish this bitch

Posted by: Robot 10th May 2016, 07:29 PM

Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer: Probably the strongest song so far in terms of sounding quite professional, definitely sounds like something I'd expect to qualify. I don't particularly like his voice, it's all very Ben Haenow, but I'm willing to let it pass for the quality of the song. 8/10

01 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer / 8/10
02 Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars / 8/10

Well that didn't work for me QUITE as much as it did on record, but it's obviously safe.

Posted by: Iz~ 10th May 2016, 07:32 PM

Well that's the most surprisingly good performance so far tonight for Croatia actually, underwhelming and ill-advised dress reveal otherwise. Middle of the pack song for me in this semi but she's singing very well for me.

Posted by: Robot 10th May 2016, 07:33 PM

Croatia: Nina Kraljic - Lighthouse: Ugh, f*** my sweepstake, I can do without that again. Quite a racket and everything was very underwhelming. The first outfit was vile, the reveal was obvious, the reveal was crap, the key change was crap, the hook was weak, her voice was shouty. There is an okay song under there but I think I'd rather not here it again. 4/10

01 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer / 8/10
02 Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars / 8/10

The Netherlands: Douwe Bob - Slow Down: Best left in about 6th at Melodifestivalen by some 60 year old pensioner. A few questions. Why is he squinting? Why did he randomly pause for no reason? Not my cup of tea in the slightest, it's not bad and it very much stands its own as being a decent song, I just would never listen to it out of choice. 5/10

Armenia: Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave: I have no idea what I think of that at all. I don't really think that's one to take in on first listen because there seemed to be a lot to take in. It kind of grabbed me but it sort of lost me towards the end, I was expecting it to kick up a gear but it never really did. And the climax to all that zooming at the start was beyond anti climatic but still, as a whole song... I'm really not sure but I'm assuming I'll get another listen on Saturday to figure that out. 6.5/10

Hear Them Calling is probably the package of the year, yes it's a bit cheap reusing the same screen thing as Mans but the song is KILLER and Greta performs the shit out of it.

Just realized that the last three songs are all performed by the returning Eurovision artists.

I have too many favourites in this semi already Bosnia don't be so good! The rap and the big ballad is such a good combination though. Can't see this one not qualifying.

I'm so glad I can't vote in this semi, I'd be all over the place (before restricting myself to Cyprus for pragmatism). Malta also a very good song and one I want to qualify.

Just let it be over with.

I love Lynda but actually happier to see Sarah out of character on the BBC, she deserves to be known outside Sweden for her own brilliant singing and personality.

I think final predictions after performances are:

Russia
Malta
Armenia

Hungary
Bosnia & Herzegovina

Estonia

Could easily swap Greece or Croatia for Estonia or Netherlands but I'm going to be pessimistic.

I'm actually really happy to see Croatia and Czech Republic back in the final finally despite them having kinda middle-of-the-pack songs for this semi. It just really stings with Greta being out with such a great song (although with Never Forget also being severely underrated, maybe I should have seen this coming, I just never though there was a chance). How did Azerbaijan seriously get past that?

I cannot understand Iceland out AT ALL. Greece had to fail eventually and hopefully this means they won't just send the same tuneless ethno-drivel so often. If Greta is 11th it'll be even more annoying, though Hungary and Malta were both much, much weaker.

I really believe the 6th-11th place region was sooooo close. Won't even surprise me if there was a tie with Iceland in 11th. Can't imagine anyone else being 11th tbh.

Whereas semi two should be very top heavy and the dnq point will probably be very scarce.

Guys, sorry to be a bit dense here... What would happen if Australia won? My assumption is they wouldn't host it in Aus. So, would they like... choose a country to host it in? Or would it fall to the runner up?

They choose a country to host it in, but the Australian broadcaster hosts it there.

First things first, here are the results from my scorecard tonight:

09.5 Iceland: Greta Salóme - Hear Them Calling
09.0 Russia: Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One
08.5 Armenia: Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave
08.5 Czech Republic: Gabriela Gunčíková - I Stand
08.0 The Netherlands: Douwe Bob - Slow Down
08.0 Hungary: Freddie - Pioneer
08.0 Cyprus: Minus One - Alter Ego
08.0 Azerbaijan: Samra - Miracle
08.0 Bosnia & Herzegovina: Dalal & Deen feat. Ana Rucner and Jala - Ljubav Je
07.5 Malta: Ira Losco - Walk On Water

07.5 Croatia: Nina Kraljić - Lighthouse
07.0 Austria: ZOË - Loin d'ici
07.0 Estonia: Jüri Pootsmann - Play
06.5 Moldova: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars
06.0 Finland: Sandhja - Sing It Away
05.0 Greece: Argo - Utopian Land
04.5 Montenegro: Highway - The Real Thing
02.0 San Marino: Serhat - I Didn't Know

So of course the massive shock was Iceland, I can't quite work out how they didn't make it. My only theory is that juries heavily marked her down for lack of originality with the screens, and if so that could put Sergey in a spot of bother on Saturday, and the dark staging preventing a connection between Greta and the audience as I've worried about all Eurovision season. Aside from that, I have to be pleased with the results and even though Croatia and Austria weren't in my top 10 I do really like both studio versions so I'm very happy they have made it. A little surprised at the Azerbaijan vocals hate in here, that was so so so many leagues ahead of any other vocals Samra has put in over the last two weeks and of course the backing vocals helped but I was so pleasantly surprised, of course many of you won't have been aware of the low bar set but still!

Ira underwhelmed a little for me, you can tell that scrapping their original hi-tech concept left the performance a little empty. Overjoyed for Czech Republic, Gabriela put in a stunner of a vocal as always! And Sergey is surely going to landslide this, unless my lack of originality theory as mentioned above will hurt his jury score heavily, my whole family were very impressed despite not wanting to be due to the aforementioned lack of originality with screens. Cyprus really deserved their qualification too, absolutely fantastic camerawork and probably the best in the whole semi-final.

Not sure if anyone saw it but there was political chaos in the press conference between Armenia and Azerbaijan as Iveta was waving a Nagorno-Karabakh flag in the green room during the recaps, something that had mysteriously disappeared by the time we returned to the green room to see her qualify - something tells me the EBU were on their case. Both of them got asked about it by the press and I imagine sanctions are coming Armenia's way any minute now!

But overall a very good night, just a shame for Iceland and that Russia have probably wrapped the victory up with their draw when it was looking like we could've had a close contest.

Posted by: Ryan. 10th May 2016, 11:03 PM

Oh and another "in your face" moment for the "political voting" moaners with 2 more countries losing 100% records, proof that if your song isn't good enough you aren't getting the votes! smile.gif

Lol the icelandic commentator just posted on snapchat earlier today that when he entered his commenting booth (lol idk what it's called) he had a gift package from Russia lmao.

Also, this:

The EBU announced on 10 May 2016 that they were investigating reports of possible rule violations after Russian professional jury member Anastasia Stotskaya livestreamed footage through the live-streaming social media site Periscope, showing the Russian jury's deliberation during the jury rehearsal of the first semi-final on 9 May.[93] The video showed a jury member not paying attention to the Dutch performance, as well as a glimpse of Stotskaya's jury voting form showing notes evaluating performances. Another jury member states during the Armenian performance that she will support Armenia "because [her] husband is Armenian".[19] The video also shows jury members on their phones during other performances. The rules of the contest stipulate that all jury members are to evaluate performances individually, without discussing the results with other jury members, a stipulation that was clearly violated by the Russian jury.[94]

(taken from Wikipedia)

Posted by: Ryan. 10th May 2016, 11:17 PM

Yeah the EBU chucked out that Russian juror and a replacement one will be ready for the final. I assume they took the jury result from the remaining 4 jurors, I'm not sure if it has been fully explained what they did but we'll know on Saturday!

Posted by: Aphrodite 11th May 2016, 01:32 AM

Was late watching I'm so surprised Iceland didn't make it. For me Netherlands,Cyprus,Austria and Russia were the stand outs,I love the Russian song and staging and i still think they will be the ones to beat on Saturday night. I really want Ireland to qualify in semi 2,the final is much more exciting when your own country is in.

Good to see Hungary qualify biggrin.gif

Posted by: AdamAloud 11th May 2016, 09:52 AM

iTunes update:

92. Joe & Jake - You're Not Alone (United Kingdom)
413. Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One (Russia)
592. Frans - If I Were Sorry (Sweden)
596. Douwe Bob - Slow Down (The Netherlands)
845. Amir - J'ai cherché (France)
1224. Zoë - Loin d'ici (Austria)
1226. Freddie - Pioneer (Hungary)
1447. Minus One - Alter Ego (Cyprus)

Sergey & Douwe doing much better than I thought on iTunes. I'm disappointed there's no sign of Iveta though sad.gif

Posted by: zeze88 11th May 2016, 11:07 AM

I still don't get why is Russia so hyped up. Yes he peformed well but I found that special effects annoying - it is like Russia is just showing off, the effects have nothing to do with the song - Mans had special effects last year but they at least made some sense and went well with the song.

Anyway, I am so happy Nina went through, quite a few Croatians are not very supportive of her so I'm glad she shut all those haters down. However, I think that designer of the dress should be fired...

And I also want Nicky to qualify because he is such a nice guy and is so proud and excited to do this. He had 2 very good performances at Irish and Israeli parties so hopefully he will be able to do the same on semi tomorrow.

7/10 isn't bad! Iceland the only big loss for me. Even though she was only 9th in the rankings, if I think about what I want to go back and listen to, Austria was definitely one of the most charming of the night, very likeable. I was happy for the Czechs making it through too, even though they weren't in my chosen 10.

Posted by: Klumzee 11th May 2016, 02:10 PM

Just caught up with all the results, as with everyone I'm surprised and gutted that Iceland are out but the performance could've been a lot better and the 'screen' thing was done better by Russia and Sweden already, good song though!

I've got a hunch that Austria are going to surprise us, thinking Kedvesem in 2011, certainly with the second half placement! Also Azeri vocals weren't that bad? I mean they weren't the best but the song was strong enough and they didn't detract from the performance as much as Finland and Moldova.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th May 2016, 02:35 PM

Best entries of the night has to be Russia, Austria, Azerbaijan (Not bad could grow on me), Croatia (hoping to win, I really love Croatia's entry) and Malta (which really sounded like a Jess Glynne track to me). Overall though I really thought Iceland's entry was the best of the lot in my opinion, how on earth did that completely miss blink.gif

And I bet Armenia and Azerbaijan will give 12 points to each other in the final nocheer.gif nothing new there.

And did San Marino run out of singers, is that the best they could send. laugh.gif

Agreed. She had a couple of shaky points (was like "Here it goes" when she opened the first chorus) but overall she really didn't struggle that much - her rehearsals were much worse. To me the main problem with the performance was the constant smiling. You're supposed to be devastated about your relationship going to shit, look angry!

Official statement from the EBU regarding Armenia's actions yesterday:

QUOTE
The EBU and the Reference Group, the governing body of the Eurovision Song Contest, strongly condemn the brandishing of the Nagorno-Karabakh flag in the Green Room during the live transmission of the first Semi Final on 10 May and considers the flag's appearance in the transmission harmful to the Eurovision Song Contest brand.

The Reference Group has decided to sanction Armenian broadcaster, AMPTV, in accordance with the Rules. The nature of the sanction will be determined, at the latest, by the next Reference Group meeting in June.

We are acutely aware of the tense situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, and the ongoing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We consider the appearance of a flag of a highly disputed territory in the live transmission a serious breach of Rule 1.2.2h of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest stating that "no messages promoting any organisation, institution, political cause or other, company, brand, products or services shall be allowed in the Shows".

Furthermore, the EBU has imposed a zero-tolerance policy towards the Armenian delegation with regards to breaching the Rules of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, in particular in relation to the aforementioned incident.

The Reference Group wishes to point out that any further breach of the Rules of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest could lead to disqualification from this year's event or any successive editions.

Just re-watched the show on YouTube without the BBC commentary and I have to say I was amazed by 'The Grey People' interval act. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was so tastefully done, very moving and the ending gave me goosebumps. Shame on the BBC that thought it was a better idea to have Mel Giedroyc flirting with some of the contestants in a sketch rather than show this.

I do love the little Mel and Sarah Dawn Finer inserts that we had but put them on the red button or on the website or as a little 10 minute intro before the show starts, don't force us to watch them instead of the interval acts that are supposed to be for us. I'm not surprised the BBC are receiving criticism from some media outlets, I really don't know why they have to do this every single year especially with intervals acts as good as this one was.

Posted by: Silas 12th May 2016, 07:31 AM

The BBCs coverage is so poor. They insist on giving that dr Eurovision twat airtime, don't show most of the interval and then slag off half the show and voting. Coverage damages the nations view of the contest. The media is the reason we don't take this seriously anymore
