For the Pokémon franchise's 20th movie in the series and to commemorate the anime's 20th anniversary, a remake, or more a retelling, of the original first Pokémon series has been made into a film. It was screened last week and released in Japan today.

Ash, Pikachu, Delia Ketchum, Professor Oak, Jessie, James, Meowth and Nurse Joy return. It is unknown yet if Brock and Misty will return or if they'll appear just in their respective gym leader roles. It has been confirmed that characters that had featured through the show's first 6 series will appear in cameo roles.

Gen IV Pokémon (Diamond & Pearl) feature with additional characters that will accompany Ash who were not present in the first series, as well as more of a prominence placed on the Pokémon Ho-Oh.

A second film in this alternate continuity has been confirmed. It will be released in Japan on July 13th 2018.

I've just recently watched this first film and it's visually stunning and a great retelling of the Kanto story. I'm sort of glad it was completely different for the majority of the film but some of the interpretations of the Kanto era felt rushed (e.g. Butterfree leaving - but I still wanted to cry laugh.gif)

Everyone's Story is the second film in the series and is set in The Orange Islands supposedly acting as a reboot of the series and Pokémon: The Movie 2000 with Lugia returning.
