Rihanna's star is as bright as ever, but she needs to release some better, more pop friendly material. I know that "Work" was a huge hit, but I find the whole ANTI album a real step back.

It does seem that Rihanna struggles to get a hit by herself at the moment though, her last big hit single that wasn't a collaboration was 2012's 'Diamonds' (although 'Needed Me' was a huge hit in the US, and spent a long time in the UK top 100 despite its low peak)

Great to see The Weeknd and Daft Punk straight to the A-List anyway, 'I Feel IT Coming' sounds like another big smash.

Well you're largely on your own there because 95% of the rest of the music industry recognises it's a huge step forward for her as an artist.
Love On The Brain is undoubtedly one of her best songs ever, it's just not "on trend" with tropical house or tailored to UK radio... not surprising it flopped.

ANTI album sales are worrying for her though. We're a long way from the Loud era... she has essentially lost the UK as a market.

Great for Rag'n'Bone Man. Should be a biggie now.

REALLY sad for Rihanna and KDA to be removed already. sad.gif YAY for Alessia's add.

I think Rihanna is still in a more than fine position generally.

Once a song is dropped, can it possibly return in the future?

Only if it's re-released, or impact date is changed (as with Sia's Alive).

Well Rag'n'Bone Man just did kink.gif Pretty sure Take Me To Church was another notable one, this usually just happens if the song is being re-released or looks set to blow up though

Yeah. It seems too soon for Rihanna to be removed? Unless the label have scrapped all promo for it/decided to try and get everyone to forget about this era so they can start a new one? unsure.gif

I refuse to believe 'Love On The Brain' couldn't have been a massive hit? Especially with promo and proper airplay. This whole era seemed quite mute altogether from Rihanna though (with the exception of 'Work'). 'Kiss It Better' under performance was down to incredibly bad timing (and a pretty bland video) as it got pushed just as they released her Calvin feature... 'Needed Me' did really well for something with little airplay though. But again, I think that was more down to hype surrounding the video than radio actually playing it/the non existent promo.

I fail to see why they couldn't just get rid of Starboy and give I Feel It Coming its own slot, it's had enough time on the playlist by now.... unsure.gif Controlla's time is surely almost up too although I guess if that and Fake Love are sharing a slot, it means both end up with fewer plays than they would on their own? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Hadji 25th November 2016, 02:50 PM

They should have got rid of "Controlla" because it's been in the chart for ages and has had its run and it won't be making another return to the top 40 unless it's one of the songs which benefits from gift card effects in the new year

It's not just the UK radio though. In the US, I think only "Work" made it into TOP 10 on the pop radio. That said, that song was still a huge success, it spent like 9 weeks at #1 on HOT 100.

Pop radio is always hungry for new Rihanna. But they are not willing to play just anything from her - she needs to deliver the pop hits. It's always been like that with Rihanna.

"Love On the Brain" is #17 on Pop radio and climbing very nicely. It looks like it'll be a big hit in the US. "Needed Me" managed to become her longest charting song on the Hot 100, beating out "We Found Love". It was a massive hit on Urban/Rhythmic radio and managed to peak/crossover to pop charting at #14.

She's done very well on US Pop radio this year, given that the material hasn't been pop-radio friendly. And like you said, they will spin her a lot if she makes a radio-friendly Pop song. Just look at how big "This Is What You Came For" was for her - #2 peak on Pop radio and a massive hit everywhere.

In terms of the radio 1 playlist, nice to see Alessia Cara playlisted. It's becoming a nice sized hit for her in the US, so hope the same will happen in the UK!

Exactly right happened with Lightening Bolt by Jake Bugg too. Happens a lot with indie music because radio 1 are so in throw to playing singles chart hits they're scared to take risks with talented indie artists!

As for Rihanna I always thought the album was called 'Anti' because she wanted to make it in contrast to her previous in your face pop albums?

Rat Boy <3

Lovers Law is like a lost Xenomania demo from 2005, it could have been on Girls Aloud's Chemistry album!
