It's obvious this is coming in the next couple of months so I think it's time for a thread *.*
There's heavy rumours this is out in April and supposedly there's 60/61 stars on Taylor's latest insta post. 61 days time is Friday April 26th + that day is supposedly Arbor Day or something which has something to do with palm trees so I can see that being the release date for the lead single ahhh I'm so excited *.*

What I’m getting at with these clues is that • this definitely looks like a countdown • this album is going to be similar to Red, the palm tree that appears as the center is larger, which implies that it’s the focal point, and with her co-writing songs for the genre, it’s probably given her means to help find the balance between what skyrocketed her into being a mid-2010’s radio darling and what made her famous in the first place.
Reputation is a catharsis, and this album picks up where it left off. It’s Taylor seeing the light after an endless pit of darkness.

I'd love something in between Red and 1989, I think that's probably plausible. I did love Reputation ofc but I think it went a bit too far, 1989 had that feel-good breezy pop sensibility she's always had even if it abandoned country, and Red merged pop and country so well so there was something for everyone.
I genuinely have 0 idea what to expect which makes this very exciting if we do get a new single this week! With Reputation, it was obvious she was gonna go further into pop but this will probably be something more familiar but still a step forward and I can't wait to see where she goes with it.

I'm honestly gutted she didn't release, the last couple of weeks would've been a perfect chance to get a #1 hit and the charts worldwide aren't too competitive at the top right now so she could've easily snatched the #1 pretty much everywhere 😭

Omggg this is SO good, it's kind of exactly what I expected and she needs but not in a tired predictable way. It's like Taylor sings a Panic! song with the drums but I can hear bits of Shake It Off, bits of that breezy 1989 vibe and it just feels fun and carefree and sweet like "old Taylor". The video is PERFECT too, stunning - thank god we're well rid of Joseph Khan's style over substance! I'm gonna need lots more watches as there's so many little things to it. Her and Brendon sound so perfect together too, it's just a great pop song without any of the victim narrative, jibes at god knows who etc., ngl with the snake at the start I was like wtf is she doing we don't need that until it turned into butterflies

That video!!! It’s so extra but in a good way - a couple of the videos post-LWYMMD last era quickly became style over substance so the amount of effort here was appreciated. So camp, it was like watching a Glee performance or something in places (even down to Brendon having Blaine-esque hair!) - also... cats as for the song, I’m not entirely sure about the lyrics in the middle 8 (like there’s me in awesome and spelling is fun... dammit Taylor stop denting some of your songs with cringe moments like these) but that’s not too much of an issue because you kind of get swept up in the general cheesy feel of the whole package anyway, a cute return from Taylor and it’s sure to be stuck in my head all day! I actually was a fan of the ‘reputation’ era but this felt refreshing all the same, definitely more of the ‘1989’ sound to be found here. Brendon was a perfect choice of feature also, he really helped sell it. Lastly, I have to fight the urge to burst into Foo Fighters - ‘The Pretender’ when the “one of these things is not like the other” lyric comes around

It's nice enough, I guess. But it doesn't feel like something that really grabs you.
Shake It Off & Look What You Made Me Do made the world sit-up and notice, for better or worse, but Me! is fading from my memory as soon as I'm doing listening to it. If it is an *event* it's an event because Taylor is the biggest pop star in the world, not because the song provokes any real discussion as was the case with her last few lead singles. I guess there's an argument somewhere that it shouldn't necessarily need too but I've become accustomed to that being the case whenever Taylor starts a new era.
She's become very good at setting a tone for her era's with the first single. Shake It Off introduced us to Pop!Taylor, who was evolving and evaluating her own image within the industry and started a somewhat meta approach to her own style which we saw analyzed and turned to 11 with Blank Space. Look What You Made Me Do cultivated an image of angry, revenge driven Taylor that offered further deconstruction of her good girl image throughout the Reputation era. I liked that the era ended on Delicate, which seemed to strike the balance between old and new Taylor.
The most I can say about this one is....it's nice, and I don't hate it. I might even grow to quite like it. But it feels very pedestrian. I could see Camila Cabello or Bebe Rexha producing this and it going utterly ignored because they're not big names. But if it's setting a precedent for this new era, then I guess we're going to be getting a lot of nice if uninspiring and slightly insipid pop music? Not the worst thing in the world, but it feels like a bit of a downgrade to me. I may also be one of like...4 people in the world who doesn't like Brandon Urie all that much which obviously isn't helping the case.
I do like the music video though, and I love the imagery of the snake at the beggining turning into a hoard of butterflies. Very clever.

I think she has absolutely nailed it with this! It's a strong, instant and fun pop song that doesn't take itself at all seriously. It is exactly what she needed at this very moment in her career. The video is wonderful, but she seems to be a master at those.

It will 100% smash. I get why she released this it’s very American AC radio hit, and she needed something that the radio would stick to. After the first week or so LWYMMD’s hype wore off and it was a lot less stable than her other leads, they needed a radio deal to get it a pop #1 over there. So it’s wise to go with something safe that will smash and have longevity even if it does end up being one of the least popular songs on the album.

I mean it started out well, shame the chorus was such a letdown, and then the spelling verse...yeah no. As a whole, it's quite charming I guess and I like that there's a focus away from her media disputes, but she's maybe turned the kitsch factor a bit too high here. I mean this is no different to something from a Disney Channel movie. She does best when she does accessible pop songs but with a bit of depth and storytelling to them, she's certainly better than this.

I’m really liking it though. And that video is just wow. With LMYMMD i loved the video but the song on its own never clicked. This is definitely on par with Shake It Off as being a strong lead.
Every time I watch i notice something new.
I kinda think she’s like sampling herself in this too. The video in parts remind me of other Taylor videos and the way she sings certain lines in the song remind me of other Taylor songs but in a more grown up this is me now kinda way.

Was surprised when I heard this playing on Heart last night!
Given it a full first listen and there is something so dislikable about her in the video and I can’t put my finger on it. That said I love how she’s shaken it up a bit by going with a feature for the lead and their vocals do compliment each other really nicely to make it much more instant than LWYMMD and I’m preferring how light hearted and colourful it is!

I've listened a few times now. It's not growing on me, but it's not exactly grating on me either. It's still just very cute and for the most part, that's ok. I can deal with that. I think the hook is pretty bland and quite lazy though.
But yeah, I'm enjoying it just not particularly loving it. But it's kinda what I wanted/expected from this. She usually kills it with the 2nd singles though so...

I feel it’s just a really bad/cringy song and if was any other female artist other than Taylor, it would be slated on here.

I've seen a lot of criticism coming from people who actually really respect Taylor as being one of this generation's greatest popstars / songwriters. That's certainly the case on Popjustice forum and with a few of us who have replied here (including me!), as well as in some critical reviews. Maybe it's a different story on social media, I don't know.
'Me!' just feels low effort to me, that's my main issue with the song. I don't think Taylor is usually a low effort sort of artist. When listening I just think that she's selling herself short. Certain elements of the song are very "Taylor does Kidz Bop", which isn't what I'm personally wanting from her. I can't help but feel like this is an inauthentic place for her to have reached artistically, 7 albums in and fast approaching the age of 30. Maybe her remit for this song was to appeal to the younger fans who were craving a light-hearted & silly song after reputation, and I suppose in that sense she's ticked the boxes. Maybe the purpose of this song is to serve as a "course correct" that easily slots into playlists & is an easy fit on radio.
I feel I should reiterate that I don't hate the song. Disappointed in it, yes. It's kind of mostly fine I guess. This is a great and really reasonable explanation, thank you. It mostly sums up exactly how I feel, and how I imagine a lot of casual and actual Taylor fans feel.

I find Me so disappointing, which is sad as I had a lot of expectations. It's not quite deserving of the mauling it's getting elsewhere (have Popjustice ever hated something to this degree?) but it's just so...basic.

I don't mind it, it's quite bland and definitely generic but adding Brendon Urie on the track gives it another level with some extra interest. I personally think tbe backing of the track sounds a lot like Nine in the Afternoon in the verses. At least the general optimism in the song is the same.
What I do find funny is how Taylor Swift was so anti-Spotify in the past and now she's inking massive deals with them! If only she had done that for her last era..

I can see the comparison to 'Next To Me' but this mostly just kinda sounds like one of Panic!'s poppy songs to me, Brendon Urie has much more presence/influence on it than I expected.
It's a perfectly fine song, definitely getting a bit too much criticism (the spelling part is a little cringeworthy but she's had a similar cringe moment on all of her last 4 lead singles, it's like it's an intentional part of the Taylor formula, and this is the least annoying of the 4 ) but I think it'll be a big enough hit for her anyway, can see it having more longevity than anything off her last album even if the debut isn't quite as strong as that of 'Look What You Made Me Do'. In the UK that is. Probably won't last as long as 'Delicate' did in the US.

Tbh this is underwhelming quite a lot in terms of success rn Hopefully it'll be a long-lasting hit tho (I feel it'll serve longevity but we'll see). The opening week sales in America are I hope this can go #1 there but low-key think it's gonna get blocked (even if it does, +98 is still the biggest ever climb in billboard history *.*)

I thought LWYMMD was a Thursday release?
Regardless, it’s not necessarily early airplay but rather billboard syncing their radio tracking periods with Mediabase, which hasn’t helped these types of releases at all since 2015 It’s just that Taylor is such a high profile artist that a huge radio deal that gets her 3000+ spins on the first weekend would have been enough to rock the charts alone.

ME! Is definitely not the worst song she’s done in my opinion.
I actually prefer it to You Need To Calm Down tbh.
She’s definitely had worse but she’s also had stuff whats much much better.

I enjoy this! Admittedly it's not something I really ever listen to out of choice, but I still do enjoy it whenever I hear it. It's almost like a slice of novelty fun.
Obviously the follow-up single was in a different league though, that's the one that will stick with me.

Still to this day, a pretty awful choice of lead single, especially on an album packed with so many gems.
This should have been the singles run:
"Cruel Summer" "The Man" "You Need To Calm Down" "Lover" "Cornelia Street" "Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince"
This era would have been far more successful if it went like this.

I still really like this tbh. It’s catchy as hell and I love the video too. I know it is quite childish and not amongst her very best but it is really feel good and it always makes me smile. I agree it probably wasn’t a strong lead single but it still was a hit for her.
