The EOY which always starts in December and finishes in March when no-one is looking at this forum is here! Maybe this time I'll finish the countdown in enough time for me to not have to advertise it on my Personal Chart a week later to get anyone to even look at my #1
Anyway, quite a bit has happened in my chart this year. This is the first year in which every chart had the same number of songs in it which made the points easy enough to calculate, meaning I didn't just rank the songs based on nothing. This was also the year in which my new format remained consistent, meaning that length of chart runs began to increase quite dramatically, with Ikson managing a horrendously long 29 weeks in the Top 100. This year I also came to the sad conclusion that we were unlikely to get any songs as good as 7 Years and therefore permitted songs to spend more than 2 weeks at #1, in order to stop songs getting to #1 which really didn't deserve it (although one still did...). The first song to take advantage of this was Lucid Dreams by Owl City, followed by Snow Patrol, Rasmussen, Rudimental, John Gibbons and AJR. AJR could make themselves the first act to spend a fourth week at #1 this week, although that's more down to the fact that there are no other songs decent enough for it than any merit of the song itself.
This year also saw the re-introduction of debut #1s for the first time since my Top 15 switched to a Top 40. The first debut #1 was Monsters by Saara Aalto after Eurovision - the first of three debut #1s this year - Lukas Graham's Love Someone and Only Sun's What a State also managed it.
In terms of the music itself, as former decent tropical house artists moved towards the 'new' trend of deep house, I moved away from those artists as I found them boring. Indie - especially Brit-indie - came a lot more into fashion on my chart, with random indie bands being to my Top 100 what random urban artists are to the UK Top 100. Tropical house songs still made the top spot, however a lot less of them and generally only for one week. Ballads continued to be popular with me, and a good few cracked the decent end of my chart.
Excitement! I get the feeling 'These Days' is the one you regret putting at #1 but hopefully I'm wrong. Also enjoy 'Ginger', 'Sweat' and 'Favela' from your #1s so hopefully they're nice and high.
2 Declan McKenna - The Kids Don't Wanna Come Home
3 Sheppard - Keep Me Crazy
4 Finn Kleffman - Head Over Heels
5 Sia - Never Give Up
6 We the Lion - Found Love
7 Alle Farben & Janieck - Little Hollywood
8 MOWE - Back in the Summer
9 Aedhi & Clément Bcx - Next to You
10 Bad Sounds - Meat on My Bones
Alessia scraped the #1 spot last year with her topical hit Seventeen, topical because I was seventeen. I'm now eighteen (nearly 19 ) and Alessia's new single Growing Pains was sadly rather dull and peaked at #38. Declan's fiftieth single from his album 'Listen To Your Friends' did go Top 40 here and was quite a long runner but has missed the Top 100. The rest of the Top 10 is also filled with artists who either haven't released anything this year or released considerably underwhelming new music, the one exception being Janieck who does have a song in this year's Top 100. But it's fair to say that we'll have 10 new artists in the Top 10 this year
I really like Girls Like You
The other songs, they're okay. (Though I Love It [mainly the music video] is a guilty pleasure)
No idea what your 2014 Worst Single is but I love 2015-2017 Taste is alright but I got over it pretty quickly (I prefer Dip)
Be Alright is a good one.
Be Alright is a really good choice for best mainstream song of the year! Surprisingly so considering that your choices over the last few years have been songs I dislike!
As for your worst songs of the year, I agree with a few of them - Taste and Ay Caramba were dreadful!
Well, I enjoy most of your Bottom 5. 'Taste' particularly, that'll be making my Top 100. 'In My Feelings' is still to come in my EOY too.
'Girls Like You' I can agree with, 'I Love It' I enjoyed but fell off my chart very quickly and 'Ay Caramba' while not bad is very non-essential.
Well you definitely picked the worst rap song of the year as your #1, even I think that song is garbage.
Didn't care much for I Love It & Girls Like You was terrible as well so good pick there too!
However Be Alright is one of the worst things I've heard all year... interestingly though that's the only song on your entire song of the year list I dislike, some amazing picks from previous years!
Amy Shark definitely has one of the best albums this year! I adore every song on the album and she really deserves more success than what she's manages over here. Apparently I Said Hi is the 19th most streamed song on Apply Music Australia in the last year
The albums tracks have basically become the soundtrack for Home & Away in the fast few months too tbh, I don't watch it but it's always on and I swear at least once a week there's something from her on Actually a lot of her songs are used in promotional stuff over here too

So all the way down in #133 we have our lowest #1 single. And this is only with me counting songs with a decent chance of making the EOY, if I included all the songs that had charted for me this year it would be comfortably out of the Top 200. Another songs called 'These Days' is much higher up this list for me, but it most certainly didn't feature any of these artists. It was the start of Jess' comeback which I was initially really excited for, and the song actually sounded quite good when it first came out. Seven weeks a non-mover at #2 and I thought differently. This song marked the start of the end for Jess' chart career for me as the artist who grabbed my Mainstream Song of the Year in 2015 resorted to bland pop, Macklemore continued to fade into obscurity and Dan Caplen never really had a career in the first place. It amazes me that Rudimental managed to turn it around with the amazing 'Toast to our Differences', but it was too much of them to ask to actually push it and they instead pushed flop single Let Me Live. Oops.

It's been over a year since this was released and I still can't believe how such an amazing song managed to go Top 10 in the UK. A lot of Stormzy's songs are things I don't really agree with but this song is such an honest and humble song about how God changed his life, and I really respect Stormzy for pushing this as the second single from his album. It also spent too short a period of time on my personal chart - the chart runs have lengthened as the year's gone on so if this song was released this december it would be a completely different story. MNEK's more recent single 'Tongue' reached #104 on my EOY so unfortunately this is the only mention that gets, and whilst Stormzy is yet to have another hit he probably will get one with his feature on Timbuktu which I'm really enjoying atm.

Yeah, so here's an example of another song which I was playing and loving WAY after it left my chart, I just seemed to forget that every Saturday when I was compiling it. New Politics are yet to beat One of Us for me but this was a very decent attempt, with a chorus that was very sing-along-able to (even if they spelt the word 'colour' wrong ) They definiely deserve a mention in here and I feel quite bad not giving them a Top 100 position but with a chart run like that I couldn't quite bring myself to do it.

This song was VERY lucky to reach #2 in my chart climate right now. It was originally in my Top 100 but I threw it out when I realised I'd forgotten yet ANOTHER hit from the year (my method of only counting songs when they dropped out wasn't the best then oops). Listening back again it actually sounds better than I thought it did - I'd kind of forgotten the verses and they're the best part of it but with a chorus like the one it has it was destined to be forgotten really. There was definitely some aspect of riding off the back of Friday Night, which is in a completely different league to this.

So the song we have to say a sad goodbye to at #101 (although it's not that sad as we'll be seeing both artists again later) is Rebel Yell by Klingande and baby-voiced Krishane. This song sounded like a dream collaboration on paper - the summery tropical house vibes of Klingande and the Krishane that made Drunk and Incapable one of my favourite songs of this decade - and it certainly delivered in real life. Giving a listen now, it certainly fits the warming winter vibes a lot more than it would fit the March/April season which might explain why it's so low here. But it is sad to see this be the song to just miss out.

So this is the first of only two worship songs to actually make the Top 100 this year. Whilst there's been no lack of Christian songs in my chart this year, there hasn't been as many 'hits' so to speak. I don't know what it is about this song that gets me - loads of other songs sound similar - I guess it might just be the combination of the lyrics and the melody that get this stuck in my head and my heart. It's a beautiful song.

Yeah, this should probably have been in last year's EOY considering it was already out of the Top 40 by the start of 2018, but it wasn't so here it is. This funky piece was a BJSC entry, back when BJSC entries could go on to be massive hits in my chart (I mean, there are a few coming up later... just not many). I don't tend to pay much attention to videos so whenever I watch it I'm just reminded of how weird this one is. Anyway, it's all about the song, and the song's amazing. I don't actually think I've heard much like it since which is a shame. Alex went on to have another hit, 'Politics of Love', however that was short lived and falls out at #142 here.

This is the first of two Galantis singles to make the Top 100 (gosh, they're building up quite a discography here aren't they) and the first single to let me know that they were firmly back on track after a few dodgy singles. Tell Me You Loved Me managed the Top 100 last year, but probably ended too low as it was quite a way before I realised it would become a #1 hit, although really it's no better than this - it's just that January always has a lack of great songs Some people are going off Galantis now but I don't really understand why - they're sticking to the same sound they've always had whilst finding new ways to keep it catchy and attention-grabbing. Oh well, they'll always be my Galantis. until they inevitably switch to future bass like every other once-decent dance artist has

So after the rather disappointing Eurovision of 2017, this year seemed to make up for it, jam-packed with the usual collection of Eurovision bops. In fact, another four of them will be making an appearance here. As soon I heard Eleni was performing at Eurovision (for the wrong country but oh well) I was somewhat excited as To Kati was really catchy and exactly what I was looking for in a Eurovision hit. I have to say when the song began I was quite disappointed as the drop seemed REALLY dull and future bass. But thankfully that wasn't the full drop and all the ethnic-y dance stuff came in to make it sound great. Keep going average cypriot greek singer

Starting off as a well-performing album track, it soon became clear that this would become the biggest hit of Mr. Ezra's career. This pushed through the barrage of Eurovision tracks to become George's second Top 10 hit here - his first, Pretty Shining People, missed out on a Top 100 position by around 25 points, which makes me wonder whether I actually calculated everything correctly as that spent four weeks in the Top 10 as opposed to the one Shotgun spent. This is, however, undeniably the better song, and I need to remember to actually chart Hold My Girl as I forget every week

Now we come to what was the last Top 10 hit of British-Spanish band Crystal Fighters (well I say last, they could quite easily get another one, its just that their more recent material hasn't been as up to scratch). After the amazing Good Girls, I pretty much forgot about these, which explains why a song released in October 2017 didn't chart until February 2018, but it is certainly worth it. Chilled indie vibes with a bit of Spanish influence as well, with a soothing music video and that infectious 'dancing on the yellow yellow' by the guy with the deep voice just makes this song amazing - well, amazing enough to bump it up by 80 points into the Top 100.

Therefore I jumped straight on board with this dance collab with Redlight, and thus it became a real winter dance smash and the one song that will really remind me of my 18th birthday. This song charted purely on merit as I don't really care for either artist (I'd forgotten Noah even featured on All Falls Down until I searched it just now) but this song is really good, something you can dance along to for just the right amount of time. I'm one of the few who didn't get into Shotgun either.
Great to see Blinded By Your Grace here. It was nice for one of his non-rap songs to be released as a single and actually become a massive hit.
I absolutely love Fuego. It was the only Eurovision track to make any sort of impact on me this year. I can't believe that the Israeli song won over it, I found that one horrific.
Blinded By Your Grace is probably my fave from Stormzy.
Fuego was a great Eurovision song.
Shotgun still holds up today.
My Way is a good dance tune.
My Way is fab, such a bop and I wish it was big compared to a lot of other uninspiring dance hits Fuego is obv an absolute banger too and Shotgun is one of the best hits of the year for sure.

I honestly thought the UK were really going to get on board with this, with Saara finishing second and all. I was even hoping that she might end up getting a chart hit higher than Matt Terry's debut got. Sadly none of that happened and she ended up second-last in the final. This was a very instant hit but the drop is fairly dull and that's probably what caused such a rapid drop-off for her in my charts.

So we get to our first track in the Top 100 to have missed the weekly Top 10 (although its peak of 12 was achieved on Eurovision week when there were about six new entries in the Top 10). It's certainly not the lowest-peaking track to crack the Top 100 either. What I have to say about this song is that Rea's voice is brilliant and makes the song for me, and the way he sings the verses had me singing them for months after I first heard them. I don't have a clue what the random German rap adds to the song or why he felt the need to include it but it's there and I've got used to it.

Another song who's chart run was distoreted by the Eurovision takeover, at least this one managed to crack the Top 10 before everything was cruelly pushed out. Unlike many artists where I've known the song for months before it cracks the chart, I didn't even know this existed until it began making tracks on Spotify. On first listen I thought this sounded amazing and just WANTED it to be a hit, and thankfully it was. So this indie-pop duo was a new one on me this year, and it's probably a new one on you as well. Which means that this song had to have been amazing to crack my chart - and it was. All the lyrics are incredibly catchy, and the song itself sounds so uplifting (even if it's maybe not meant to oops). It's just the sort of song you want to hear midway through the year when you're sick of all the experimental stuff and you just want a good indie track. I'll certainly be keeping my eyes out for these guys over the next year, and their new single Deadmen could crack my Top 40 in the coming weeks!
(I still don't really understand why he says he'll be the one 'like a shot from a loaded gun' though, are gunshots considered to be 'the one'? )

Aaand there goes another #1. This funky summer dance smash by French outfit Boston Bun featuring DVNO (who I've called DNVO in all of my charts oops) was amazing for... well, the summer holidays. Unfortunately my summer holidays tend to only be two weeks long, and it very quickly turned from an amazingly quirky dance hit that was always in my head to an odd gimmick. It was the only other summer dance track to get to #1 so that's an achievement at least. His new track 'Better Together' sounds a bit generic after what we've had so unfortunately looks like it won't make an appearance here.

Not going to lie, I wasn't a massive Sigrid fan when her debut single came out (the one that kept going up and down iTunes that people were going crazy about and I've forgotten the name of ). I first found an interest when she won the BBC Music Award at the same time Strangers was out, and she soared up the charts. Strangers was a great song, but I think that this song is the unsung hero - it's amazing, and I don't think it would have spent more than a week in the Top 100 if it wasn't. Of course Strangers would become a hit, she'd just won the award and it was accessible enough. But the fact that this managed a decent run in the Top 100, even if it never made the Top 40, is an indicator of how good the song itself is. Shame Sucker Punch was horrendous

As it happens I actually do know Saint PHNX and nearly charted them earlier in the year too! Or maybe last year. I feel like I might have worked at an event with them or someone I knew did, the name rings a bell.
As for High Five I'm only just getting into that now, the name put me off before Strangers is my hit from her so far, Don't Kill My Vibe was I think the one that everyone liked but I preferred her earlier song Plot Twist!
Really like "Nevermind", "To Rome" and "High Five" being there!
"Nevermind" has been a really huge hit where I live, "To Rome" was a really overlooked song for me and "High Five" is great, just like Sigrid herself!
I like Spread Love and High Five too

So this is the first Lukas Graham track in the Top 100 (there'll be quite a few more, get used to seeing their name) and also the first song to appear that's still in my Personal Chart. After he tried to cram the fact his dad was dead into pretty much every song in his first album, this album is definitely more about moving on from his dad and focusing on his family (although there's still quite a few references to his dad in there). This one in particular is a song to his daughter, hence the name 'lullaby', and how he will always love her no matter what comes in the way. The lyrics are great but for this song it's the way he sings them that really gets it for me, another amazing slow song that I just love.

So this was the follow-up to magahit 'broken' which everyone except me discovered a year after its release and assumed it would smash over here, which unfortunately it hasn't (yet - I wouldn't put it past the UK public looking at how late we've taken up other tracks). This is probably on a similar level to broken, however managed the interesting feat of balancing exactly three weeks at #10 (although looking at how stagnant my charts were that summer it's not that amazing). I think the chorus, particularly the way it's sung so lazily, is a big plus for me, it's something that I can sing whenever in a sort-of weird voice and still manage to capture the essence of the song in my head. Still waiting for another single though.

This is where I begin to think that my estimations were a little out as this had over 1000 point before I told myself to get real. It's had an impressive Top 40 run nonetheless. KT Tunstall is one of those artists I was brought up listening to (Black Horse and the Cherry Tree ) and who sort-of forgot to retire, meaning that we still get to hear her output in 2018. This is classic Tunstall and is really helped by the fact that I spontaneously start singing it whenever I'm near a river. I don't want to jump into the river though because that might hurt. Her new track Human Being will enter my chart this Saturday but unfortunately I can't really justify sticking in on her chart history now.

This is the one of the few songs I heard and very quickly decided 'BJSC NEEDS to hear this'. Hooverphonic have had probably most of the women of Belgium as their lead singer but they've now started afresh with Luka, and I love her voice so much! It's one of those things where she sounds 'bored' but in a way that makes the song incredibly easy to sing along to. I love all the 'don't take me to xyz, just take me back home' - it's just so carefree and wonderful in its own way. It was beginning to stabilise a bit in my chart when of course it finished Top 10 in BJSC, hence the one week in the Top 10 here, but it went on to be a classic for me.

From a song about a woman saying she's not romantic to a band who quite clearly are. This one didn't take very long at all to grow, the chorus is insanely catchy and the way he says things as if he's always breathing out makes the song stick out in my head. Not sure how long this will last on my chart but I've veered on the edge of caution here because I can't see it having that much longevity. watch this be the new Chromeo - Juice now

I've just seen where Brazilian Soul is in my Top 100 atm and it shouldn't be that high so let's deduct 100 or so points from it Anyway, I refused to chart Best Friend because Mr and Mrs Sofi Tukker felt the need to throw expletives all around it, but I was certainly looking for new Knocks music as I was impressed, and this was exactly what I was looking for. Goodness knows why the guy decided to try his hand at Eurovision again when he'd already won the thing, but it meant I had to wait an extra two months to get my hands on this. It was worth the wait though, and whilst there are tons of people labelling it as 'cheesy' and 'uninspiring', I think it's a really fun piece of music and just captures what Rybak does so well. I actually disliked him quite a bit when he won Eurovision but even Fairytale's grown on me now and he's one of my favourite pop singers of this generation.

Hey Pete <3 So much to catch up here haha!!
Agree with 4 out of 5 of your hatechart, I lowkey stan Girls Like You Yasss at your top 2 tho, both utterly vile songs *.*
I hate Be Alright oops, tho the last song I love from your mainstream award winners is I Gotta Feeling oops!! On the other hand, Love Monster is easily my fave of your top albums of each years; such a good album & I Said Hi is utterly fab <3
Poor These Days x Lowkey a bop.
YASSSSSS FUEGO *.* My bop, it still goes off so badly <3 So agree with you this year was such a comeback for Eurovision! Last year was weak af (I think one song made my top 100 last year and that was in the 91-100 section but like 5 songs are contending for my top 50 this year!)
My Way is also a bop and by far the best thing the inferior Cyrus sister has put her name to *.*
Monsters is also incredible & my other Eurovision fave of 2018 <3 <3 I still bop to it so much and it's such a strong single from Saara <3
High Five is also a bop, even if it's not up there with Sigrid's best haha
Though we also have Lukas Graham and that utter HORROR of the Norway 2018 Eurovision entry here so countdown cancelled x

I don't think I'll be able to churn another three of these out now but here's another #1 dropping out to give you something interesting to look at, containing two of the performers who led the 2014 World Cup (gosh, that was four years ago ) This reached #1 after I didn't fancy These Days staying there for two weeks, and I heard this again on the bus to Center Parcs and thought 'well this sounds like a pretty decent #1'. Whilst one contributing artist to mega-smash Crank It had a song called Zum Zum, another had a song called Dum Dum Although this sort-of highlights the issue with my counting scheme as this actually only spent two weeks in the Top 100 in 2018 - the rest of its run was in 2017. But it deserves its glory so here we go. What I love most about this song is its absolutely horrendous approach to rhyming where ijt feels like Tinie is just sticking any word that sort-of rhymes into the verse despite it not making any sense. Heartbreaker, heartbreak / The way you while so nahh-tey / faster than my Ferrari / Come and take a safari / Espanyol et la Francais / Vodka switch to Bacardi / all she do is get mahh-ney / ALL SHE DO IS GET MAHH-NEY!. We got there just as they were finishing but oh well, I had their name down and went to see what they'd put out. Everything except this was a cover (well this might be as well, but it would be a cover of a VERY obscure song which would be a bit weird ) This might by my most non-mainstream pick, with less than 1000 YouTube views and the only comment saying 'Boys message me please it's important'. So here's the lowest peaking song to get into my Top 100. The definition of a slow burner if you were ever to see one in my chart, and if you were to listen to the song now it might not grab you initially. Three songs that peaked at #10 in a row, what a coincidence Or maybe not that much since I've just tweaked my ordering once again as this was a little too high for my likings. This came after a few fairly mediocre singles from Kodaline, but I was still hanging onto how amazing Brother was, and this was a cheerful and uplifting enough song to grab my radar. I think the video is definitely one of my favourite things about the song and certainly boosted it up my chart, but I don't think the number of weeks it spent in the 11-20 section before hitting the Top 10 should gift it a higher chart position when it's nowhere near as good as some of the songs which would have been below it. This didn't do much for me at first but it really grew on me during my first few weeks at Uni - I would say it was one of the first songs I was listening to a lot that I hadn't found before I went. Another song about souls, but this one doesn't have anything to do with Brazil. A Billy Lockett song ('Old Man') was entered to BJSC last year, and it was a song I actually really enjoyed. Unfortunately he decided to delete that and all his other previous work from every possible channel, which was a shame as I would certainly have followed him further. As it happened, I re-discovered Billy by complete co-incidence as I was looking for a way of salvaging anything from Alle Farben's year and saw that he had done a remix of Feels So Good - turns out I preferred (and charted) the original. This was the follow-up to that, and whilst it's a song that I really like I don't have much else to say about it so I'm glad I wrote that big long paragraph. Not sure why it's this high though oops.

I've left the three dots there but let's face it, a song which has fallen to #100 the week before the Christmas takeover isn't going to be spending another week in the chart. My second charting BJSC entry this year (either La Louze charted last year or I forgot to include it oops but it's still amazing), I entered this the week it entered as the highest non-American song which was obscure enough to be a contender. They've yet to have another hit but I've seen that they've actually released a follow-up so I should probably check that out.

I first heard about this when it was climbing somewhat high in the iTunes chart and everyone got really excited and thought that it might do something officially. Of course it didn't because the charts are hideously stagnant but it was enough to get me to listen to it. This was the first time I had heard any Editors in quite a long time, and whilst it didn't grab me initially, I was intrigued. Of course then it grew to finally end up in the Top 5. The chorus is definitely the best part of the song and to some extent the only part that I really remember - when the blurry wavey verse starts it still takes me a while to actually remember what song I'm listening to. Editors still have another tune to come though!

Nicky Romero is one of those artists who releases a load of stuff and I just ignore most of it, but when I do listen I love it. The incentive behind me listening to this one was obviously the ingenious Canadian group Walk Off The Earth, who will have a few Christmassy tracks to add to their already impressive chart history tomorrow. After waiting for ages to finally get my hands on Fifth Avenue, the second bus came at the same time so to speak with this dance track. I don't really know where the other four members of Walk Off the Earth feature on this song but it's a tune in its own right and deserves its place here!

The second of five Lukas Graham tracks to grace the Top 100, this is the real emotional one on the album. It's another song to his daughter, but this time he's talking about the fact that he will die before she does, and that the memories he makes with her will one day make her sad as he will no longer be there. This one made me really upset when I first heard it because I was still feeling somewhat homesick at Uni and all the memories I had of going out with family made me a little sad. But I wanted to keep listening, and it's that poignancy that shot it so high up my chart.

So here's the only dose of cheese you're getting this EOY. And I've spent the last 10 songs pushing it up so be happy. This is one of those sorts of songs that I can 'decide' whether to get on board with so to speak, and I'd decided to pretty much ignore Peg Whatserface from the last BJSC with a similar song, but this one grabbed my attention a bit more. Not on first listen particularly, but on my second listen it flew into my votes. The video, what with all the reverse effects and stuff grabbed my attention as well, and whilst I thought I was going off it when it peaked at #9 I'm still thoroughly on board, hence the lengthy stay in the lower realms of my chart.

We were driftin' like two oicebergs... Anyway, here's our next Eurovision entry and another which peaked at #2. Britain's Got Talent reject who was brought back and subsequently made the final Ryan O'Shaughnessy actually came into Eurovision with a really smooth track which didn't grab me on first listen but really got me in the recap. It's an amazing song and the instrumentation is really good. Oh and I'm probably supposed to mention something about the video/dancing being about two men in a relationship as well.

The comeback of another nostalgic Brit-indie outfit, this didn't really do much for me initially but it really blew up for me in the new year. Yes, the video is a bit (well, a lot) creepy but the chorus is incredibly catchy and I love the notion of bringing a lemon to a knife fight. I wholeheartedly prefer this to the much more acclaimed Cheetah Tongue, and whilst not as good as Turn it's still one of the songs of the year and certainly one I'll go back to.

Another funky bop from Lost Frequencies, he's still not lived up to the amazingness of Reality (how many times can I fit that song into my EOY? ) but it's a good shot. Here he is with The NGHBRS, who I've never heard of and will probably never hear of again, but they add decent vocals to this. It's not an in-your-face type of track and it took a while for me to actually remember how the chorus went but I knew I liked it and that's all that mattered. Nice touring music video as well.

Tropical house really did go downhill quickly didn't it. The first #1 of the new year, at the time it sort of felt like a non-#1 hence the ridiculously quick drop out of the charts but now I can see that this isn't the case. This is classic SeeB, the beats sounding amazing as usual and Skip's vocals work perfectly on it. This may possibly be the last time we saw decent SeeB though and I can now quite easily talk about the HORROR that is Grip ft. Bastille. I mean the song isn't horrendous but it's definitely not the artist I know on the track, and it's just an example of another once-decent artist tuning in to the horrendous future bass trend that is just nothing-y. Bye Bye SeeB until you release something different.

This replaced SeeB at the top and even spent two weeks there but when I think about my #1s this year I very often forget it even existed. It's a decent dance piece but due to it being instant I can't really see many memorable features present now. Since this Gromee released a Eurovision flop and seemingly went back into his hidey-hole for the rest of the year (although apparently he released a new song 4 months ago so I should probably check that out). Also as a side note, what was that chart run? Did my first taste of alcohol really ruin my senses that much?

Who has the ginger? I have no idea who does, or what the ginger is, and let's face it I probably don't want to know. What I do know is that this song was at #1 the week I released my video Top 100 (and probably the last one as YouTube continues to convince me that it's not a good thing by blocking every YouTube downloader in the UK.) This is another banger from the dynamic duo, and makes me wonder even more how a 40 year-old English DJ and a clearly much younger Nigerian solo singer came to be such good friends. (apparently they met in an American bar, which makes the story even more weird.) Anyway, it's another one to add to their almost-identical chart histories. And let's be honest - Fasta has as much of Riton on as all the others, regardless of whether he is credited.

Next up we have everyone's favourite slightly-quirky-world-music-influenced-nursery rhyme, featuring Kiesza (famous for Hideaway) and Chris Malinchak (famous for a song I've completely forgotten). Of course it's weird but that's what I love about it - it's a song that very easily gets stuck in your head and that you can really enjoy. I expected both of them to add a Christmas song to their chart history this winter, but they deleted the song I was hoping to hear and replaced it with a song which sounded pretty dull and had a euphemism as a title which is a real no-no for Pete.

The first of two Belle and Sebastian tracks to grace the Top 100, and yet another example of a song peaking low but spending absolutely ages in the Top 100. This funky piece didn't do much for me initially, but its main line 'poor boy, I could never live up to your imagination' was just so grabbing, it was always in my head and was a favourite from just after Easter, all the way through the Summer holidays and beyond. Well writing up Sigala's chart history took longer than expected. That's probably because he released a lot of songs in the period in which it was easier to get a Top 10 in my chart than it was for me to send a Facebook message. The new format has clearly taken its toll though, as this is the only song from him to make the EOY Top 100 this year (whilst Feels Like Home has the same peak I grew tired of it almost immediately and I think it spent about 5 weeks Top 40). I remember deliberately keeping this off the top spot in favour of Owl City's Lucid Dreams as I knew airplay would make me sick of it and I didn't want another These Days scenario. As it was I did grow tired of it hence the very quick drop-off but a lengthy Top 10 run gave it this high position!

loving Lullaby (this will be even higher in my EOY) and Mother from that section, Ginger is great too (one of their best).
(I can send you the deleted Malinkiesza Xmas song if you want, though it's probably a bit late for that now!)
Don't recall that Gromee song, I quite liked 'Light Me Up' but moreso for being a rare dance entry to Eurovision, I wasn't too keen on it after Eurovision ended (and I see you weren't that keen on it either).
Seeb and Lost Frequencies have lost their spark for me, shame but tropical house has really got stale and whatever they're doing now isn't that great for me.
Wow @ The Wombats still making music, there's a throwback indeed.
Cruel World was quite good for its genre, I like Marley's vocals in it.
Ginger is a banger much prefer that to Fake ID which whilst also good is a bit much with the weird production.
Mother was absolutely terrible though, WHAT on earth was that sample?!
Lullaby is a really good track once again from Sigala!
Absolutely adore Lullaby, my favourite Sigala song to date! Paloma's voice really elevates the track for me.
Haven't known or liked much so far oops, sorry for the lack of comments compared to you on mine Lullaby is a bop though, I wasn't sure Paloma would fit a Sigala song but I'd like to hear more from her like that actually!

So here's our offering from Klingande which *did* make the Top 100, and it's just outside the Top 50, and it's a collaboration with French singer Broken Back, who is interestingly enough named due to a vertebral displacement he has. Whilst the start of this song sounds a bit like an introduction to Madagascar, it goes on to be a really smooth song with a great melody and vocals. The drop from 4-11 is down to the Christmas influx, and only one Christmas song left the top 10 this week explaining why it hasn't climbed back in, although it's unlikely now with the New Year tracks.

As well as Boy Azooga (who we've already heard from) and Only Sun (who we're yet to see), this episode of Unknown Pleasures also delivered this beauty. It's a really powerful song and tackles something that is a very big issue nowadays - because of course, boys do cry (especially us ones on the autism spectrum). Whilst I was certain this lot were American, I was surprised to find out that this was in fact a British band But upon further research, I did find out that the lead singer was American. And we land at yet ANOTHER Niceland BJSC bop. Before I begin, I must make it clear that I do NOT agree with the music video and that demons cannot be forced out of people by getting a Canadian band to sing in front of them them. Nor do they look like an ugly moving black liquid-y thing. Disclaimer over, this is an incredibly catchy indie piece which was not only an instant hit but also had an earworm-y chorus that was in my head for months. Hence I've bumped it into a prestigious Top 50 spot. Oh, and they had a more popular song with Sarah Jeffery later in the year but it was bland so let's ignore it.

After having a Galantis song at #98, we not have one at exactly half the number! If you knew me after I'd heard both this and Mama Look at Me Now, you would have known that I had much preferred the latter, even vocally stating how I disliked this. However it soon became clear that MLAMN wore off very quickly whilst this continued to grow and became their highest peaking track this year for me. MAX's vocals in this are quite a step away from what was reminiscent of an agitated 13 year-old in Matoma's Lonely, but great nonetheless. Although if that's him in the music video he looks mad.

Next up we have obscure American band The Fleeting Ends with another UP entry (mine, in fact ). Typing 'Something Fleeting' didn't find me that, but it did find me this earworm. After reaching #1 with their amazing Avicii collab, I was certainly up for new Vargas & Lagola music, and this didn't disappoint. A simple but really effective guitar piece with a few dance-y vibes, this was a suitable song for them to come out with with their new-found fame. Much better than their previous single 'Rolling Stone', so they should be glad Avicii (RIP ) brought them back to my attention. Unfgortunately, as with most of the artists I've posted about recently., their follow up was too bland.

Ew, look at that early-year chart run Anyway, as you've guessed, this entered my chart towards the end of 2017 on recommendation from Dan. I hadn't hear anything from Chicane since that song he did in the 00s that was famous and I've forgotten about, but it's the vocals on this piece that really drew me in, reminding me of Saint Etienne at their peak. Of course the beat adds further to it, but it's definitely secondary to 'Lamb' who apparently this was taken from. Since this I think he released an album but I haven't heard anythiing from it except for that slightly unnecessary re-working of Nirvana.

#1 alert! Since I've been following C-BooL, this is the first song he's put out with a male vocal, and so initially I was quite wary - the song didn't even debut Top 40. But I think this is a bit of a theme with C-BooL's stuff - I felt the same about DJ Is Your Second Name, and I'm beginning to feel it about his new one Fire In My Head as well. Needless to say, it ended up at #1 (after spending three weeks at a number ending with 5), and whilst only being a 1-weeker, is still pretty memorable. It's fall from #3 to #10 was down to Eurovision by the way, not just me getting very bored very quickly.

So this track marked the (proper) return of 00s legends The Kooks, and like Galantis a few songs ago I actually preferred their other track No Pressure to begin with, but this very quickly took its place and became the biggest hit of this era. It's quite a step away from their older stuff (look to Four Leaf Clover if you want some of that) but it's great in its own way, and like I've said about loads of songs in this list, it's just so catchy. It had a decent run as well, getting a mini-boost from the album release.

Another #1 now, and the highest entry for everyone's favourite Belgian Lost Frequencies, alongside James Blunt who has somehow managed to salvage his career by featuring on European hit dance tracks. When I first heard this I was memorised, and was ready for this to be a very long-running #1. Then Eurovision happened, cutting it's run sadly short. It's still a great tropical house piece though, and the Clement Bcx sample at the end is cheeky but makes it even better.

ooh yay a song that I charted pops up! 'Gorecki' is brilliant and will be appearing very high in my EOY.
which of his 00s songs do you mean then? quite a few were famous. I hope it's the wonderful 'Poppiholla' which is my favourite of his.
'Melody' was one of Lost Frequencies' better songs of recent though I didn't quite like it enough to chart it.
Yay! "Melody" reached the top 50! Really like this song more than "Crazy" in my opinion.
Okayyy, catching up!
Wombats return, that one passed me by but Oceans charted for me, that was a good one.
I've grabbed to watch later some of those pop punkier ones as I'm kinda getting back into that sound - you might want to check out The Maine, e.g. Sound of Reverie for a similar vibe.
I didn't know Malinchak and Kiesza collabed again. I charted Weird Kid by them earlier but I'm totally missing the euphemism there if that's the one you're referring to! Is there an EP or smth? I'll have a look.
Otherwise lots of dance songs as expected. Interesting to see Sigala going backwards for you over the years when he's only just rising for me - those early hits didn't top 20 for me as I wasn't in that space to enjoy them at the time.
In any case, great writeup, v enjoyable read! You should look into doing reviews professionally, aren't you at uni now? Is there a paper or something? (Just a suggestion ofc, not aiming to control your life!)

The fact that this didn't enter my chart on the Vance Joy Album Takeover week means that I can't have been initially impressed with this, but when it came out as a single I immediately embraced it. It's closer to Like Gold than either of the other singles, quite a sad sounding song but in such a way that you really get into it. It's beginning to rack up the weeks in my chart now, even managing to climb on the Christmas week. Another cryptic video from Vance though as I have no idea what's going on in it.

Norwegian singer Mørland managed to get my EOY #3 a couple of years back, and then seemingly faded into nowhere. Until we got a glimmer of hope with this one-off single about his son Leo. He says in the description of the video that initially he wanted to keep it to himself (WHY? Lukas Graham has basically written his whole album with this stuff) but decided to share it, and thankfully so as it got me another song to love. Unfortunately it wasn't as good as Skin and that is represented in its chart run, but it's a wonderful song with a wonderful message.

Kicking off our Top 40 we have our final Christian song and last year's Christmas #1 in my personal chart. Initially I didn't really realise it was a Christmas song (hence the October entry) as I was just looking for new Christian music and came across this, a collaboration by the great band Casting Crowns alongside Matt Maher, who managed himself another Christmas track this year. Luckily the early discovery got me to warm to it enough to give it two weeks at the top in December, although as with every Christmas song it tailed off very quickly as well. It did pop up this year again though, the highest retro Christmas song to do so.

Another #1 here, and another 1-weeker which just scrapes the Top 40, by Ina Wroldsen (not Ina Wrolsden, Ida Wrolden or whoever else you want to mis-type her name.) Ina and Alok are both artists I've had music from in the past (and have enjoyed) so was looking forward to this. My first thought was that the lyrics were almost identical to Rockabye, but I've recently found out that Ina wrote Rockabye about herself so that does fit (in fact, Strongest was about a single mother as well wasn't it). This was definitely a fluke #1 but it's a song I still enjoy, even if I was a bit tired of it by the time it appeared in BJSC.

I've just changed (and almost written commentary for) the song at this position three times, just to let you know how difficult this is - and of course how fresh these results are. The unlucky one to drop out is Jack Savoretti's 'Between the Minds' (which I wrote as 'between the lines' for the first 5 weeks, oops). It's not the liveliest of the songs he's done, but it's the type of powerful heart-warming slow song that I'm loving at the moment. I also very much identify with not liking to raise my voice and liking to listen so this touched me.

So the next act to release a massive smash in my chart and then fall into the abyss are Australian five-piece The Rubens (although looking at the video you'd be forgiven for thinking there was only one of them). Another beautiful slow song, the only difference being that it has some fruity language in meaning that my fingers got a good workout turning the volume button down and back up again. (seriously, swearing really ruins the ambience of a song). Who is the mysterious 'Sarah' that this song features anyway? My sister's called Sarah - is it her? Moving on from that, The Rubens released a song called 'God Forgot' which clearly isn't meant for a Christian audience and so I forgot about its existence.

This is the point in the EOY where you being to re-discover how great songs you haven't heard in a while are and this is one of them. The chorus has obviously remained very stuck in my head but I'd kind of relegated the song to that, when in fact when you add in the verses and pre-chorus it really becomes a masterpiece. It was the first of quite a few Kodaline songs to chart this year, none of which did better than it. I really don't see the need for a long thin video though, it makes Youtube look like it's gone mad. (and yes the ugly drop was thanks to Eurovision)

Amid (confirmed?) rumours that Swedish House Mafia are getting back together, Axwell /\ Ingrosso released this summer smash. (I mean, when do they not release a smash? Except Dreamer which was more of a semi-smash but the others are amazing). This was perfect for driving around on the holidays, going on the beach in the sun etc. It had slightly more longevity than its sweaty counterpart but, as all summer songs do, fell pretty quickly when it started getting a bit chilly. ROMANS appear to have released a lot of songs I've not noticed but the one I'm listening to now sounds much more soul than dance.

Yeah, sort of forgot Good Charlotte existed until this cropped up, and I didn't really think that much of it really - the ridiculously fake smile of that woman hugging the kid at the start of the music video was a bit off-putting and makes you know she's going to turn into some sort of beast by the end of the song. Anyway, Actual Pain (you know, as opposed to all that fake pain) continued to get me until I just had to chart it, and continued to feel really fresh for weeks on end. In fact, it still does now. The lastg album track form their new album to crack the Top 40, this one feels a bit to this album what 'Funeral' was to the last one, maybe not as amazing but still good. This song is about his marriage to his wife, which in doing he finally lets go of the death of his father. (still spent most of the album talking about it though.) Songs that peak at the end of the year always begin the countdown much higher than they should and end up a bir lower, and I think this has fallen victim to that, purely because it's been a playlist staple for a few months now. When I first heard this I had no idea I would go on to love it so much - the #39 entrry was during one of my 'songs-enter-high-and-fall-fast' era but then it continued to grow on me and became one of the longest-running Top 10s of the year. It's also helped by the fact that I spontaneously begin singing it whenever anyone says the word 'cold'.

Apparently this song features Kerri Watt now. It didn't in January but she does play a pretty big part in the song so it does make sense. I'd never really been into Embrace much, although my dad is and they've got some good songs in their back catalogue (Gravity and On Top Of The World ). I came across this when looking at the New Releases thread and recognising their name, leading to me listening to it. The first of three songs inside the Top 40 without a Top 10 peak but with a lot of longevity! Young indie band Only Sun came up with the innovative idea of releasing one single a month for the whole of 2018, complete with a wacky lyric video, and I personally think that's a great way of getting people to know your music more (as I hadn't even heard of them up until they were entered to Unknown Pleasures). This tune refuses to get old for me and is a really solid piece, complete with the fast singing and easy-to-learn chorus. It certainly paved the way for their #1 to come and I think I might even enjoy it more when I'm over both.

The highest Wombats song in this countdown, and boy is it a good one. It took a little while to grow on me, but when it did it really blew up and became one of my favourite songs for quite a while. Unfortunately that was just as Eurovision happened, robbing it of an even higher peak. Lots of random lines in this, such as 'you could give an Aspirin the headache of its life', but then of course that just allows it to slot into prime position whenever someone mentions aspirin or headaches. Well Lukas Graham did make their return this year, but whilst they were away I had to find a substitute. And who better than a Danish band who sound exactly the same as them. Who cares that they're singing about IKEA. This stuck around for a bit in my Top 40 until it really smashed in around December/January time. As above, this popped up into my head whenever I saw anything from IKEA - which was a LOT *.* And the fact that it really does sound like a serious song even though its about IKEA is iconic. I really didn't expect to hear much from Drones Club after their two tracks last year, let alone them get another song into the EOY and one much higher than Hurricane (which remains amazing and very underrated). It looked like this was going to be a one-week wonder as well after dropping out of the Top 40, but it of course made a re-entry and has been pretty much a permanent feature of the Top 100 since. It's that weird synth-y riff that gets it for me, making it ever fresh and refusing to grow old on me. The lyrics aren't amazing but with a tune like this, it doesn't matter.

It's a pretty odd song - I don't think anyone really falls in love with the verses, and if you just listen to a section of it you might never listen to it again. Indie overload in this part of the charts! This was Suzi Island's second track after the wonderful Show Me The Way and it's amazing. When I played it on Plug Buzzjack loved it a lot more as well, although it's about women in the film industry so of course they would. The reason I like it though is because it's wonderfully catchy and a proper earworm, and it's actually a follow up that's JUST AS GOOD which never happens with acts like this. It was a lot more instant that SMTW which meant it dropped off a lot quicker but it's made it this high!

Whilst every other band I used to like has turned towards 'modern' music and forced me to turn away from them, AJR continue to improve, and somehow managed their first 2 #1 singles in my chart! This song is a real step away from anything else they've done, but then again no song they've done is remotely similar, and this clearly isn't an exception. It seems like they're going for the Owl-City-Fireflies vibe here, with his voice going through some sort of vocoder, but the effect really works. And just as you think the song is over, IT STARTS AGAIN, with a weird bridge that doesn't sound remotely like the rest of the song but sticks in your head itself, before going straight back into the final chorus.

Ahh, the 'sweaty girl' song, as my mother likes to call it. Come to think of it, the lyrics are a bit untasteful and it wasn't something I was that aware of until it was pointed out to me after it had hit #1 in my chart, but it was a cover of an Inner Circle song released in the 90s so I guess I can take some comfort in that. Or maybe he's just running a fitness class. Anyway, this was my summer dance smash this year, taking up three weeks at #1 at a time when it actually wasn't the only song contending for it and making me feel like being at the beach before I was even there.

This spent 28 weeks in my chart and I'm not entirely sure why. I heard this on my 'discover weekly' playlist and immediately really liked it, although I did think the lack of any words was a bit odd. Turns out that this Ikson guy makes dance music that people can use for free in their YouTube videos, hence it would be a bit weird to have vocals (although he did experiment with them in a future song 'Let Go'. From the start I sort-of decided that this would be my non-mainstream dance hit that would spend absolutely ages in the chart - and it did exactly that, breaking the record for most weeks in my chart (although I've got no idea whether that still stands because my charts have become rather stagnant recently). In fact this would have been #2 in this chart before I subtracted 300 points from it, and it even looks odd this high up.

This was the third song to debut at #1, and the first one not to do it off the back of something big (Eurovision and Lukas Graham's comeback if you were wondering). After a few singls which I did quite like but not enough for them to go Top 40, the October single for Only Sun really smashed it out the park for me. Initially I thought that it would merely be their return to the Top 40, but after a few more listens I began to realise that this did deserve #1. Despite being knocked off by three Lukas Graham tracks after just one week, it's had decent longevity and is still in my Top 40 now. I really like it as it sounds like something I heard on holiday when I was 10 or 11 but I've no idea what, and this would have just scraped into my Reshuffle, although this year I'm changing the rules so that the entire Top 100 are eligible as I think there will be a lot of chopping and changing this year.

And as if by magic, we now have the highest song in the EOY to have debuted at #1! Goes to show that initial hype doesn't always define longevity. We had to wait what felt like ages for these guys to come back, the only thing to look at in 2018 being a My Little Pony soundtrack single, so of course I was excited. It is a bit of a weird choice of comeback single though, despite it being put on Hot Hits (and SO NEARLY making the official chart), it's not got the emotional impact of 7 Years and it isn't one of their more hard-hitting songs either, but I did love it for what it was, and of course the album was amazing

The truth is, whilst this song is amazing (and that trumpet riff is to die for), it wouldn't have spent four weeks at #1 if there was anything remotely in contention for the top spot. It took a big hit thanks to Christmas and never really recovered, dropping off quickly and even falling behind the song that it kept off #1 (Klingande - Wonders). Poor AJR.

And our last song for tonight is the song that appears to be such a marmite song here on Buzzjack. I have to be honest, when I first heard this I didn't think that much of it. It was nice enough, but the swearing in the middle pretty much put me off it (WHY do people think it's a good idea to put dirty words in the middle of lovely smooth pieces of music? it really baffles me). I gained interest again when it began to climb the Spotify charts and I remembered hearing it the first time. After hearing it again I immediately fell in love and it became one of the few mainstream songs to actually do well in my chart. His new one sounds decent as well!

Be Alright I don't know why I love it because it's essentially an Ed Sheeran song but it just feels much more authentic and believeable than anything he'd release and really hits me in the feels with the vocals.

I've just moved this down two but now I'm hearing it I feel like that was a mistake Oh well, they're just positions in an imaginary EOY. Anyway, this song did another 'first' this year, becoming the first song ever to return to #1 (ever as in ever, including my Top 15 era and everything). I knew of The Struts from 'Should Have Been Me' back in 2015 but didn't really think anything of them, other than the fact that they were British and seemingly famous but I'd never heard of them (come on, I didn't really know about non-mainstream music back then). I listened to both the original and the Kesha version before deciding on which one to use, but I think that Kesha's vocals ultimately add another dimension to the track, and it somehow feels a bit 'dirty' without her. Oh and the drop from 2-7 was due to the Lukas Graham album release if you hadn't guessed.

And here is our highest Eurovision entry, and the only real one with any longevity (in its last week in the Top 10 there were no other Eurovision songs in the Top 40). I didn't think that much of this on first play (like pretty much every slow song I've mentioned in this countdown) but on the replay this really caught my attention. One of the rare #1s to spend more than two weeks outside the Top 40 before entering, but it still didn't take very long for it to nab the top spot. I loved Ofenbach from Be Mine and Katchi, and initially really loved the instrumentals from the pair. What put me off initially though was Mr. Ingrosso - I mean he feels so smug all the time and his Eurovision performance was pretty atrocious. After a few listens though, the vocals became the highlight of the song, and is untimately what got them to #1. Still think Benjamin is smug though.

Another of the mass of 00s indie bands who seemed to orchestrate their return in 2018 here, we have the wonderful Fratellis. What's interesting about this though is that it sounds absolutely nothing like what they used to (in fact most of the album is more reminiscent of Scissor Sisters), it's something completely new and refreshing and for that reason it took me a bit to get into it as it's not a sound I'm that used to. Which I'm quite sad about really, as this is a beautiful and uplifting song that hasn't left my head all year (mainly because I've gone 'home' lots of times this year ). So to the surprise of half of Buzzjack and the expectations of the other half, Lukas Graham aren't #1! After their lovey-dovey first single, this very quickly followed it up with one of Lukas' more hard-hitting tracks. I wasn't actually planning on giving this the #1 initially, more of a long-running Top 10 hit, but when the album came out it just felt right. And whilst this is still so high up, I do have to say that it doesn't compete with their last album sadly, and no song could match 7 Years. They've also released a cover of an XXXTENTACION song today, yuck.

And next up is my BJSC winner, Broken Love. I'm still astounded this won - obviously it's a song that I love but that usually results in a complete flop in these contests - you only need to look as far as Royce Lovett or anything I've sent to Club Bizarre to confirm that It took me a while to finally decide to chart this, and I only really entered it on a whim having had no other real potentials. Of course then it won by the biggest margin we had all year, which completely took me by surprise as it doesn't feel like it has any of the ingredients of a BJSC winner. Anyway, this song is amazing and I'm sure most of you know it so you've got no excuse not to comment

Speaking of those 21 new entries that week, this was one of them! You might be surprised that Built By Titan isn't the highest Niceland BJSC entry (there's actually two more artists to come that I discovered through BJSC) but this song is just amazing. On first listen I did think it was a bit odd, but by the end of the song I was absolutely loving it and couldn't wait to get it on my playlist. Sadly most of Buzzjack didn't share that love, but unlike a few of my BJSC DNQs I was completely behind this and still absolutely love it. The video is certainly strange though - I mean what's the purpose of the woman with the goldfish bowl appearing in the second verse if she just walks away again and all he has to do to get it off is to get his bandmate to pull hard enough?

And here's another band I discovered from BJSC! In theory this is the sort of act I really shouldn't be a fan of - the lead singer is apparently a famous actor in America and this obviously makes their Youtube videos popular as well as half the comments being filled with comments about said band member. In reality though, it's not about who's in the band (or how weird their music videos are), it's about the sound - and they sound absolutely amazing. I was intrigued enough after hearing Pictures of Girls to find more, and this certainly didn't disappoint, retaining the sound I loved from that but also adding a really catchy beat, making it a complete earworm which went round my head the whole weekend I was helping out on a Scout Camp, which is what the song reminds me of now.

Another song about days here, and it's the highest charting... let's say full-on dance song (there's a less dance-y song by a dance artist still to come). This song uses a sample from Colonel Bagshot's 1971 track 'Six Day War'. I had a listen to it the other day, in the original the verses go through the first six days of the week, the lyrics getting more and more despairing as they go on. In this remix however they forever stay on Monday, meaning most of the sad bits never happen. They've also replaced the image of war with a music video showing lots of people looking a bit Turkish and not doing much whilst cameras move around them to make them look artsy. Nonetheless this song was a real sticker and spent absolutely ages in my Top 5, and before I made a few alterations was actually my EOY #1. Mahmut Orhan is yet to release another single, hence the current one-hit wonder status. Colonel Bagshot haven't released one in over 40 years so I can't see them making another chart appearance.

Honestly trying to find this song on Youtube is so difficult (I mean you try typing in 'human robot' and seeing if this song comes up). I have to actually search for another song by HUMAN and access his channel from here. I probably really confused the Multichart compilers for a few months as well by just writing 'HUMAN ROBOT' in every week. Anyway, this is the highest-charting offering from HUMAN (aka Daniel Adams-Ray, if you were wondering why I stuck a random Avicii song in the chart history). Every time I hear this I realise I've forgotten how good it is, it may not be mainstream but it's super catchy and the rap in the middle is just everything. I have to say that Rudimental have on the whole been really underwhelming this year, but they did release this gem, and what a gem it was. A great twangy-guitar and brassy instrumentation, alongside three absolutely amazing and yet completely different. The only one I knew before this was Protoje, but this song has really made me look out for Hak Baker (who is certainly my favourite of the vocalists on this, but his solo stuff hasn't been my thing really) and Shungudzo, who's even managed to bag herself another #1! As with every great song though, it was never really pushed, Rudimental instead going for two lesser songs with bigger names which both missed the Top 40 officially. Should've pushed this one guys!

This top three is so tight-knit, it could be in any order any day, but this is the song which just misses the final day of announcements. The highest-charting of the mass indie band return this year, I think I first heard this on the days when I used to watch the Breakfast Show on a Monday morning when I had a late start at college. It didn't really click with me on the first few listens, but the melody stuck in my head and continued to grow, and it was soon definitely one of my favourite songs. The video is interesting as well, with the people running up the slope and falling, before eventually making it up.

I mean last year was close but I feel like this year was even closer. I mean I didn't change my #1 and #2 like I did last year but I honestly half-regret not putting this at #1. Whilst this song has absolutely no meaning except for a dream he once had, but his wonderful vocals combined with the cinematics of the song itself, going from a quiet verse into full-on dance-pop for the chorus, it was very clear from the get-go that this was going to be up there with the best. It's the highest #1 in the EOY and it's honestly going to make me feel so nostalgic in years to come - it already does now! Here's to endless years of music from a genuinely amazing man.

And so my EOY #1 single is by the same artist behind my #1 album! The second female EOY #1 in a row (which is somewhat odd considering about 95% of the EOY Top 100 were male artists) and the first EOY #1 to not actually make #1 officially. I have to be honest, I had never really heard anything about Amy before I heard a snippet of this on someone's Youtube chart, and I was immediately intrigued. Every part of this song is perfect, the timings of the verses, the vocals in the chorus, her wonderfully funny Australian accent, it all just adds to it being an amazing song. I have to be honest, I had no idea that this would even be in my EOY Top 5, but when this came out on top I was perfectly happy to let it be, a wonderful addition to my Hall of Fame.

Amy Shark! A fantastic #1
Not familiar with your top 2 but they sound alright on a skim listen. That Amy Shark song was big in Australia so maybe if I still lived there I'd have charted it.
Great chart!
I'm not familiar with that Amy Shark song but 'Adore' was a lovely discovery in BJSC so perhaps I'd like more of her material if I delved into it. Speaking of BJSC, I'm pleased to see 'Show Me The Way' bagging a top 10 position here as it's definitely my favourite Niceland entry to date that to smash Rejects when we eventually get the next round of it otherwise, my other big highlight in your top 10 is courtesy of Snow Patrol! That was definitely a more left-field comeback than I was envisioning because they were so radio-friendly back in the day but I appreciated the switch-up a lot.
Yasss Pete. Excellent number 1 of the year. It was good to see an australian indie pop at the top here.
I Said Hi is great, anthemic af although I still prefer Adore. She is brilliant though, great #1!
Hi Pete, from the top end, Favela, Follow Your Fire, Broken Love, Owl City, Fratellis, Embrace, were all faves of mine, and lower down great to see Saara sneak in (poor ignored Saara!) Sigrid, Hooverphonic, Sigala/Paloma, The Knocks, Eleni, Nicky Romero, all did it for me.
Thanks for all the tips!
Hi Pete! There's soooo many songs I don't know, ha! My favourites here are Lullaby (Sigala) & Fuego
Hey Pete! Here's my picks from your top 50!
1 Amy Shark - I Said Hi Such a good debut album from Amy, think she could have had some success in the UK with the right push
2 Owl City - Lucid Dream
3 Snow Patrol - Don't Give In Really enjoyed their album last year
4 Rudimental - Toast To Our Differences
9 Built by Titan - Broken Love (ft. Starxs)
10 Lukas Graham - Not a Damn Thing Changed
11 Vance Joy - We're Going Home
13 Ofenbach - Paradise (ft. Benjamin Ingrosso)
14 Tom Odell - If You Wanna Love Somebody
15 Rasmussen - Higher Ground Yassss. I had money on this going top 10 at Eurovision so was pleased to be proven right, I had a feeling the televoters would love the sight of a viking representing a nordic country *.*
16 The Struts - Body Talks (ft. Kesha)
19 Lukas Graham - Love Someone Surprised this wasn't a UK hit in the end actually, even a minor one, it's pretty catchy and streaming friendly
22 John Gibbons - Sweat (A La La La La Long)
25 Belle & Sebastian - We Were Beautiful
30 Embrace - Never I thought their album was surprisingly good, this being one of the highlights
32 Lukas Graham - Say Yes (Church Ballad)
34 Axwell /\ Ingrosso - Dancing Alone (ft. ROMANS) This is as close to a trance song as the mainstream has probably seen for years, which was very welcome!
38 Jack Savoretti - Between the Minds
39 Ina Wroldsen & Alok - Favela
42 Vance Joy - I'm With You
43 Lost Frequencies - Melody (ft. James Blunt)
44 The Kooks - All The Time
46 Chicane - Gorecki
47 Vargas & Lagola - Roads
49 Galantis - Satisfied (ft. MAX)
Need to check the few I don't know in your top ten too.
Really like the distorted guitar driven Body Talks.
