Coldplay are reportedly releasing an "experimental" new album next month! Followed by a more mainstream release in 2020.
Hyped for this if true! (Either way I expect there to be some new music by the end of next year)
Ooh I like the sound of that 'experimental' tbh, might rekindle my interest in them if we're lucky
Wasn't that project they re-named themselves for the purpose of being 'experimental'?
Coldplay vs Adele in the album charts. Love it!
Will be interesting to hear this. I hope it's not album of Rap and Grime. I'm not here for that!
So much for their retirement!
They said HFOD *could* be their last when it came out, but they never said they would retire.
A big supposed leak out now! Take it all with a grain of salt, however.
Here's what was 'revealed'
- The 8th album will be titled 'Fools Gold'
- It will be released on November 29th
- The first single will be released in the next 3 weeks, with teasing beginning next week (so we'll know if this is fake or not soon)
- The album is being mixed and almost complete
- The 9th album will be released Q4 2020/Q1 2021
The tracklisting for Fools Gold:
1. One Way Train (3:43)
2. Messiah (4:12)
3. Monkey's Paw (3:33)
4. Metamorphosis (5:42)
5. Mission A.B.O.R.T. (feat Daft Punk) (7:23)
6. Where Did It Go? (5:38)
7. The First Time I Said I Love You (4:08)
8. Concious Pilot (4:21)
9. A Fool's Errand (4:18)
Another feature on one of the tracks will also be Foster The People - really hope it's real because it sounds brilliant!
Coldplay also had some recording sessions with Daft Punk last year - so that adds a bit of weight to it.
So kinda like Midnight to A Sky Full of Stars with an initial experimental take before being unashamedly mainstream for the next release?
I'd certainly be interested in a more experimental sound though and a Daft Punk feature sounds amazing. Whatever it is, it's been so long so I'd take anything! (I was never convinced a Head Full of Dreams would be their last, they only ever hinted at it and they're still as big as ever).
I am all about a Daft Punk feature so it better be amazing
A Daft Punk and Coldplay collaboration would work brilliantly.
The Daft Punk collaboration sounds interesting. If true that will be life!
A team like that could secure a big hit.
Lol at Q4 being quiet!!
Exciting news! Seeing them on tour is really overdue so I hope that'll happen as well.
They should always release songs like Midnight. They are now just commercial pap.
Oh no evil commercial music
It seems that the next album will be out on November 22.
It's actually happening! The other guy in the picture is apparently Argentinian explorer Francisco Moreno, who died on November 22, 1919.
So it would link to the rumored title of 'Fools Gold'
Adventures of a Lifetime is my favourite single from them, I much prefer their poppier music.
I really hope you're joking
Let them make what they want, personally I enjoy Coldplay's poppier music. That isn't the same for me with other artists
(And I meant single rather than album obvs for AOAL, though HFOD is also my fave album)
They sold out. They are no U2.
Looking forward to this already! Really looking forwards to hearing the Daft Punk collab. I think that could be my song of the year!
The poster has now been taken down, apparently it's not supposed to be up until Friday!
No point in taking it down only to put it up again in a few days when we've all seen it anyway
I need another Midnight or Magic.
All the 'Fools Gold' rumors have been confirmed fake, including the Coldplay collab.
Though today something very interesting has happened on YouTube and Spotify!
Hopefully we'll be hearing some news tomorrow! The posters have also now been spotted in Madrid, Berlin and Warsaw
boo so it seems like there are more chances of a Coldplay singles tomorrow than Adele's :/
I doubt we'll be seeing a single tomorrow, though I'd be very happy with one! An announcement is more likely I suspect.
It's coming!
fierce competition in albums on Nov 22
the Who are out on Dec 6
sure Coldplay is a surefire #1 unless it's too experimental or crap ala Los Unidades
but I wouldn't rule out Robbie, sure he has his target audience
Ah yeah got mixed up with The Who!
But I think Coldplay's name alone would get them the #1, their last album sold 235k in week 1. Robbie's last album sould 67k in week 1.
(and I'd suspect a Christmas album wouldn't be as popular as a regular Robbie album)
I really hope this doesn’t ruin Coldplay’s number 1 album streak. Their last album only had one lucky week at Number 1 thanks to Adele hogging it.
Looking forward to hearing what the reinvention is!
Random fans have received a letter from the band saying that it's a double album! One half is called 'Sunrise', and the other 'Sunset' - and it's out on November 22nd. And the overall project is called 'Everyday Life'
There is a countdown on Coldplay's website to 19:30 on Thursday - looks like we'll be getting the lead single then!
why would anybody do an experimental album and then go and call it Everyday Life
the title sounds like the opposite of experimental
The tracklisting and artwork has also appeared on Amazon Italy (no confirmation if it's real yet or not)
This is definitely going to #1 unless we get something from Adele first
The source code for the website also confirms it's for a single as it reads "coldplay:single-page site" - hyped for this tomorrow!
Amazing news! (though not officially confirmed yet)
Orphans is 3:17, and Arabesque is 5:40 - so I imagine Orphans is the one they'll push.
oh wasn't expecting 2 songs ala Camila
Jo Whiley has heard the album, and about it she said "I think it's brilliant, it's brave, it doesn't fit in with anything else that's out there at the moment. There's some classic Coldplay stuff and then there's also very much not classic Coldplay stuff."
really hope it's more a back to basics
for me the worst Coldplay is the one of Every teardrop is a waterfall, and most of their recent output has been a carbon copy of that
so is the Daft Punk collab not real then? are features yet to be announced or are there none?
Looking forward to hearing these! Gutted about the Daft Punk collab not happening but still new Coldplay!
Leaked tracklists are fake like 99% of the time lol ~
Looking forward to this anyhoo!
To be fair, the second leaked tracklist was real
but they did work in the studio with daft punk, didn't they
Ah yeah, you're right - I forgot that was how the second tracklist came about.
Just caught ‘orphans’ on the radio by accident... and it’s really good. They are absolute pros at making those euphoric songs
‘Orphans’ is really good. Enjoyed that one!
Really blown away by ‘Arabesque’. Very different for them and a great use of instruments and sounds used.
Think ‘Orphans’ will be the track pushed for radio though as it has a similar sound to the ‘Head Full Of Dreams’ era. Hopefully straight to A List on Radio 1 tomorrow!
Love Orphans - so happy they are back.
Not keen on either of these, Orphans is better than their worst singles though so there's that.
WOW at Arabesque, Coldplay doing woke Jazz and succeeding, who'd have thought?! Really loving it, that's definitely the kind of experimentation I like to see from them. Doubt it will be that big a hit though (at least not with that runtime), but I'm certainly interested to hear more of that kind of thing on the album.
Orphans on the other hand, very quirky lyrics aside, is pretty much textbook Coldplay, could be lifted right from their last album BUT I still really like it, so euphoric and joyful as per for them, and I'm sure that will do much better.
How wonderful to have them back
If Foals can't get a streaming hit with their tracks, Coldplay shouldn't either but we'll see.
SNL performance on November 2.
what do Foals have to do with Coldplay???
Really liking Orphans! Idk how it’ll do chart wise tho
According to the press release, the music video for "Orphans" will premiere tomorrow at 1pm. BST on YouTube. Both tracks were produced by The Dream Team and "Arabesque" features vocals from Stromae and horns by Femi Kuti and his band.
Both new songs are great! I suspect 'Orphans' will hold up better for being more commercial but at least they actually meant it when they said they'd do some experimental stuff.
Is anyone up for doing a GH rate? I've made a playlist and gonna revisit.
Princess Of China still holds up seems to be very underrated now though.
Already very addicted to Orphans!
Oprhans video out now! Really enjoying both songs
personally very disappointed, they can do much better than this
Quite enjoyed on first and second listens; I think it’s Orphans that makes me start singing “here comes the bride” to the chorus. One of them did anyway
Both of these songs are definitely much better than anything off 'Kaleidoscope', thank god! 'Orphans' is pretty Coldplay-by-numbers but I'm not gonna complain at that, have already heard it twice on the radio and it sounds great on there, very joyful sounding song despite the downbeat lyrics. Just heard 'Arabesque' now and it's not quite as instant naturally but I was getting into it more as it went on and continued building, definitely think it'll grow more with more listens. Loving the saxophone on it in particular. x
Arabesque >>> Orphans
I'm not feeling either of the new tracks, might wait until the album release to listen to them again.
These songs are not of their finest work but i have no doubt the album will house at the least a few good tracks.
The reception to their new material is lukewarm at best, the album, therefore, may not open on the strong sales that is usually expected from them.
'Everyday Life' (title track) has appeared on iTunes with the running time of 4:18, so it looks like that will be released soon (probably this week or the week after).
And on November 22nd, the band will be performing the album in Jordan and livestreaming it (Sunrise will be live at 4am GMT, Sunset 2pm).
And this fake conference video is brilliant
The title track is available now.
Oh this is absolutely beautiful, already like it even more than the first two songs I think! That instrumentation
finally a good song, Orphans is such a mediocre song, a 4/10 being generous
Awful commercial music.
How is Arabesque commercial?
I have to ask, what do you want from Coldplay? Orphans is standard stadium rock but enjoyable enough and is aimed at people who are just expecting that from them. I love Arabesque, much like the Nightwish track of the same name (sorry, I have to) it's an interesting departure from their normal sound to appease those who want something musically challenging, I'd be surprised they released a track like this if they hadn't done Midnight too.
Everyday Life is lush. That's the best sort of Coldplay, where they get the vocals almost lost in strong instrumentation that bring the feelings out.
as someone suggested above, a Coldplay rate would be really interesting
to see the contrast between early day fans of Yellow and The Scientist vs recent fans that like pop Coldplay of Everyday is a Waterfall/Ritmo de la Noche
I'd love a Coldplay rate or least favourite poll (which I prefer to rates). I think it would be a great addition to this forum and drive some footfall in here!
Not this. The latest tracks are calculated and commercial and just not good at all. They're diet Coldplay and they're not on my listening lists.
Ah yeah the super commercial sounding Arabesque
It is though. It's just a calculated and very poor track. It's jsut Ed Sheeraning music.
Arabesque is an Ed Sheeran song?
Arctic Monkeys comparisons i can get but really really really not Ed Sheeran
Coldplay have never been too experimental with their music, sure the odd track they release is different to the rest but they aren’t a band known for often invigorating their sound. I don’t see why people have a problem with them doing the same thing theyve been doing for nearly 20 years tbh
If more artists could start calculating their music to be 6 minute multilingual jazz rock epics and that becomes mainstream that'd be wonderful tbh.
The other two songs, to be fair, are very much standard Coldplay formula but that sound isn't exactly particularly popular at the moment, it's just Coldplay being Coldplay xx
Aside: if it is actually true that the album's 2 discs are a 'safe' disc and a 'more experimental' one (which seems to be the case based on 'Arabesque' being on the opposite disc to the other two), it's interesting that the more experimental one is actually disc 1 meaning it'll be the one that theoretically will get the highest streams and the charting album tracks when the album comes out. Unless a lot of people clock onto this and just skip straight to disc 2 having no interest in the more experimental stuff.
I mean I get the sellout thing if you just go by the singles (and you can't blame them when that's what makes them money), but really, if you listened to their albums, they've experimented a lot in sound over the years, or a lot more than their given credit for. Viva la Vida and Ghost Stories (well, Midnight ) in particular have some pretty unconventional sounds in there, and Arabesque clearly shows they're still willing to do that (I wish all Ed Sheeran songs sounded like that ), it just isn't given a lot of attention because it unfortunately doesn't sell that well.
yes but for every Arabesque they have a song like Every Teardrop is a Waterfall or Adventure of a Lifetime, which imho, are worst and a biggest sellout than Ed Sheeran
Preview of Guns
Quite late to this, but 'Orphans' sounding good from them. Hoping that it can manage to hold up in the chart and not drop down the charts.
Had a listen to the whole album today and apart from Orphans, Everyday Life and Champion of the World, the rest of the songs don’t really do much for me on first listen.
I take it the album leaked
looks like Daddy is the next single with a super spectacular video out on album release day
Yeah the video for Daddy is from Aardman Animations!
Guns is pretty decent!
Been hearing lots of positive things about the leaks, looking forward to it on Friday!
I'm going to hold off the leaks and look forward to buying it properly on Friday.
funny how they've change the story this time around
with the last couple albums they were saying it's the final album and they were calling it a day
but now they're saying a new album will be out next year already
‘Daddy’ has just been released along with the video
Video and song are wonderful, could be straight off Parachutes or Ghost Stories (quite the eclectic album this is looking!).
easily the best of the lot so far
It's alright, not something I see myself coming back to. Orphans is still my fave, then Everyday Life.
I still find Orphans such a mediocre and disappointing song, it's b-side material imho, can't believe Max Martin was involved and this was the result
Now Champion of the World I *really* like!
That is a beautiful song - very twinkly Coldplay, the best type!
This performance is amazing! Looking forward to listening to the album later
The album is very very disappointing to say the least, seems they've lost all the inspiration and don't know what to do anymore, the album lacks total direction, seriously think they should have scrap it and throw it to the bin and start again... it's just ideas but no cohesive and no sense of direction, just plain bad
What aboot the experimental tracks??
I'm halfway through and really enjoying it - don't think they'd scrap one of their most acclaimed albums in years
'Trouble in Town' is the standout track for me right now.
indeed Trouble in Town is probably best one on this longplay. I would remove those "talking parts" though. it ruins the whole Atmosphere
I think this is definitely their most diverse and interesting album since Viva la Vida, I'm not sure if it's fully cohesive, it really does sound that they traveled around the world picking up every genre they could think of and throw it all together in one album, whether they were finished or not It doesn't always work (Doo-wop and Gospel aren't really genres Coldplay should be trying), but when it does, it's really quite excellent. Trouble in Town, Church, Eko and بنی آدم are particular highlights and Daddy is becoming a favourite for me it's kinda weird mixing these experimental tracks with classic Coldplay moments like Orphans and Champion of the World, it feels like the last few tracks should definitely be on a different album.
I'm really happy they're taking risks and trying new things at this stage in their career and I hope it'll stop the constant calls that they never change their formula or sound, for me, this is a much more interesting album than their last few and frankly I much prefer an album that revels in experimentation with not every track pulling it off over one that focuses on consistency but with a lot of tracks sounding the same.
The second half is better than the more experimental first 8 piece for me.
Planning to give this album a first listen tomorrow but for now have just listened to the last 2 songs dropped before it - 'Daddy' is an absolute stunner, adore the video as well, reminds me a little of Steven Wilson's 'Routine' from BJSC (although thankfully without the sad ending x) think that is my fave of the five pre-album songs. 'Champion Of The World' on the other hand is comfortably my least fave of them although I am still liking it, just a little more on the ordinary side as far as Coldplay songs go and it doesn't have as strong a hook as 'Orphans' to make it stick to the memory. Very excited to hear the rest.
Needless to say praying this holds its own to get the #1 album this week and maintain their 100% record as I really doubt it'll have a second chance to rise to the top like 'A Head Full Of Dreams' did if Robbie beats them out this week eek...
Had a listen now and I'll agree with Chez that it's not exactly the most cohesive album. It feels like the 5 singles plus 'Church' and 'Trouble In Town' are the only properly fleshed out and finished songs and the rest is kind of a loose collection of diversions and demos padding it out to double album length. Some of those diversions are pretty good, 'When I Need A Friend' in particular I think is really gorgeous (as is the intro track) and 'Bani Adam' (aka track 14, I'm romanising it so I don't have to try and messily copy and paste right to left text x) has some wonderful ideas going on too. Others do not work nearly as well - 'BrokEn' is nice but it felt like I was listening to 'JESUS IS KING' again and it didn't really make much sense coming between 'Trouble In Town' and 'Daddy' 'WOTW / POTP' just sounds very unfinished and its inclusion feels pretty pointless, I'm not keen at all on 'Guns' aside from the guitars so I'm glad that was one of the shortest songs, the run of tracks 11-13 is all just nice sounding and not much more. However, all of the longer songs on the album are consistently very good ('Champion Of The World' has grown on me and I'm really loving 'Church' in particular, 'Trouble In Town' is also v good), I just wish there were a few more of them that weren't already released as singles! And like Chez said it is good that they're trying out lots of different ideas for songs rather than just churning out 11 safe traditional Coldplay songs, even if their experimentation doesn't always pan out into really essential songs.
tl;dr basically what Chez said (including the part about 'Daddy' being the best on the album )
I hope Daddy gets a release at some point, would have been a good song for this time of year imo!
It already did 'get a release', it was one of the singles (and even has a music video)...
Hopefully it gets some airplay though. Orphans has already been dropped from radio 2 so let's see what's next!
'Everyday Life' the title track has been sent out to radio today with a brand new radio version of the track.
Everyday Life video out now:
Cool, good single choice. Although I would have went with 'Daddy'.
"Everyday Life" is named one of the best albums of 2019 by NME.
It was at #43 in their list just to make that clear.
"Champion Of The World" will be pushed as the next single from the album.
A video has just been released for 'Cry Cry Cry' - does that mean that's the next single instead of 'Champion'?
Coldplay have released three "Reimagined' versions of tracks from 'Everyday Life' today.
1. BrokEn (Reimagined)
2. Champion of The World (Reimagined)
3. Cry Cry Cry (Reimagined)
'Champion of the World (Reimagined)' is track 6 on Apple Music's 'New Music Daily playlist today.
I likw Cry cry cry as a new single
Champion of the World vid releasing tomorrow - one of my faves from the album.
‘Champion of The World’ has been sent out to UK radio
and the video is out now:
I'll spin this into a new topic if there's more concrete proof soon, but it looks like the next album may be upon us! (Which would go with the leak last year that there would be a more commercial album in 2020)
Really? Wasn't expecting that
Excellent news! Look forward to hearing more about new music. I just hope the underperformance of Everyday Life hasn’t done too much damage to them!
I don't know I've a feeling after 20 years the hugeness of Coldplay could be waning mainly because of the lead singers personality.
Ooh I’d love more Coldplay this year!
Don't get it either, if their popularity decreases sure its cos the music not being as good
Chris has an amazing personality, he's hilarious
Alas they posted Magic today, which debunks the theory
OR MAYBE NOT!!
Japanese-exclusive bonus track "Flags" will be available everywhere on streaming from midnight!
Must check this out, hope it’s better than the rest of the album!
Just heard it, it's one of my favourites from there tbh! I do much prefer their upbeat stuff, hopefully that more commercial album is coming next year that's been rumoured for quite a while.
Apparently Orphans was supposed to be on their next one, but was moved to Everyday Life to give it a more commercial lead single, that bodes well for me as I love that one!
Great track - look forward to buying it
Can't even remember if I ever listened to 'Flags' oops (been aware of it existing for a while but I normally don't bother looking up exclusive bonus tracks), glad that it is going to finally get a proper worldwide release.
Sounding brilliant!
Enjoyed that.
Hopefully they can turn the tide on this flop of an album with their next release.
the album didn't do half bad considering the few good songs it has
and Orphans being such a weak lead
I'm sure they expected it to not do as well given how much of a departure it was for them, and it's been their most well critically received album in ages - so they'll be happy with that.
'Orphans' to me is a similar sound to their 'A Head Full Of Dreams' album, unless I'm missing something. 'Everyday Life' was a fantastic track, should have lead with that really.
There were 2-3 good songs on it but found myself returning to it less and less. Found it quite a struggle to listen to tbh
