Almost 30 years ago now Back To The Future concluded with its third instalment...

The time machine; the delorean; was destroyed in 1985 but Doc has invented another time machine out of a train and the train flies somewhere into the future along with Clara and their two sons. Marty McFly and his girlfriend Jennifer continue their lives in 1985.

What would happen in the next instalment of this classic movie plot if there was to be a fourth film?

You decide.

The thing with Back To The Future is that the time travel theme relied fairly heavily upon the conceit of generations being fundamentally the same across time periods, and all taking place within Hill Valley, California - every period had a somewhat pathetic McFly, a bully Tannen and a manure joke. So it was rather complete as a trilogy and there isn't all that much further to do with the concept.

Perhaps there would be scope for an inter-war Hill Valley as a setting but I feel that'd be pushing it.

IF anything were to be done further with it, as in like reboot level, I'd say there needs to be a time machine that can move in space as well as time. And/or Doc Brown finds a new family in a different location (Europe, say) to mess with time travel like. American history being so short really works against the possible scope that such an American concept can have.

Yeah maybe, there was definitely that running theme in each generation.

Perhaps in the near future what we may actually see released is not a sequel but perhaps a prequel surrounding the story of a young Doc Brown who invents time travel, though the plot may not be as true to the original trilogy. But it’s a way of revamping the story.

I would rather see a BTTF 4 which moved forward 100 years to 2085, then maybe with all the new technology we have here in 2019 to make awesome futuristic movies there could be a story of Marty McFly’s great-grandson (also a wimp) and a 1885 Doc & Clara and kids who want to learn more about the space time continuum. Maybe a move away from Hill Valley wouldn’t be that bad an idea too.

There already has been a some-what sequel in the form of the cartoon version of "Back To The Future". In that version, Doc moves back to Hill Valley in 1991 with his wife and two sons, and goes on time-travel adventures each week, occasionally with Marty McFly in tow, where there is a version of Biff in each place they visit.

The fact this hasn’t been remade like other classics shows how perfect it was!

Enjoyed watching AGAIN over Christmas!

Or the fact that Robert Zemeckis has said he will never allow it! I dread to think what will happen with the series when he passes away sad.gif

Oh is that it? I didn’t realise that, hope he secures it from the crappy CGI giants who will ultimately ruin it!

it would have to be twist of the original trilogy assumptions about the future, so we see Marty's kids as they actually grew up in OUR universe and our real 2025 - and Marty realises that the happy ending he was looking for didn't happen - it might not have been a nightmare future...but it's pretty close. So the kids go back to 1995 to try and fix things from a family point of view, and warn of what's coming (it don't matter about changing the future since everything changes anyway)...
