wonder if one of the 50s/60s soundtrack albums will top this or if the hundreds of weeks they spent in the top 10 (or whatever number the chart was limited to) aren't enough to beat the hundreds and hundreds of weeks other albums spent in the top 100.

By number of weeks alone Abba's Greatest Hits should top the list but Queen's and Bob Marley's aren't far behind on weeks and they may have spent more time in the top end of the chart. Will be interesting to see which of those three end up being the highest.

The top 10 albums changed around quite a lot over the last 12 months so their may be a few surprises

I don’t understand why it was soooooo big, only had one minor hit

Posted by: Bjork 20th June 2018, 07:01 AM

^it was actually a double A-side with another classic, I Feel the earth move
I think it's a classic cos many album tracks have been covered by others, ie You've got a Friend

Oh really, wasnt aware of all that

Posted by: Bjork 20th June 2018, 08:37 AM

there's at least 3/4 all-time classic in Tapestry
You've got a Friend, It's too late, I feel the earth move, Will you love me tomorrow

Posted by: danG 20th June 2018, 09:28 AM

and there's also You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman which I'm sure has been covered on X-Factor tens of times.

Its a classic because of all the hits she wrote for other people .

Posted by: Dannyboy 20th June 2018, 11:13 AM

I get what people are saying but back then when it was released there was only 1 hit to promote the album, all the cover versions I assume came out years after.

Posted by: Bjork 20th June 2018, 11:18 AM

no no
well first, there was the double A side with Is it too late and I Feel the Earth move, that was a massive #1 in the US
then some of the songs she recorded, she had penned them and given them to other people and had already been massive,
that includes Will You Still Love me Tomorrow for the Ronettes I think and Natural Woman for Aretha Franklin,
she had written or cowritten these tracks years ago that were super big, and now she recorded them herself for the first time

then the album also has the now-classic You've got a Friend, that would be covered later

also bare in mind that the album was up for many grammys and won album of the year, so it got the critics approval too, which always helps sales

It certainly seems like an album that has a legacy with it

didn't James Taylor record You've Got A Friend just before Carole King, or at least release it first, despite her having wrote the song?

and I know of course there were other cover versions later like McFly's which went to #1.

Posted by: Bjork 20th June 2018, 02:37 PM

she wrote You've got a friend herself but never released it as single herself, but actually the story of the track is super interesting, I saw a doc about it once, thats' why I know, it's not like Im a fan or anything

so she wrote the song herself on her own, early 70s, but funnily she was inspired by a James Taylor song (Fire and Rain, I think), then James Taylor heard it in early 71 and liked it a lot, so actually what happened is that they both recorded it simultaneously even sharing the same musicians, carole for her album and James Taylor for his album. Carole released her album first in like March but this was not the single, which was It's too late/I feel the earth move. Then soon after Taylor released You've got a Friend as the lead single of his album (cannot recall the title) and that was a big hit, thats why she didn't released it, but sure helped her album sales too (she was like 14 or 15 weeks at #1 in US Albums)

sorry for the long story biggrin.gif

disagree, their singles were pretty massive
usually dance music doesn't sell albums, so pretty surprising they did so well, but i think it's cos they included many big big hits
Moving on up was massive

I've corrected the Paolo Nutiini post but genuinely surprised the album was around for 141 with no real big hits on it.

Posted by: danG 23rd June 2018, 01:56 PM

Pencil Full Of Lead and Candy were both reasonably big and he was more of an album seller than a singles artist anyway. He got loads of Radio 2 airplay which would have really helped the album.

I bought that Rihanna album as I’d enjoyed Don’t Stop The Music and, to a lesser extent, Shut Up And Drive. Turned out I didn’t really like anything else, although it is difficult to argue against the sheer number of hits it produced.

I agree, there wasn’t even a video for it, so random for a first single that was to promote a new album

Posted by: Bjork 21st August 2018, 03:20 PM

I think it went to #1 cos it was his first single post Thriller, anything would have gone to #1, but it's not his best

The most shocking thing for me with the Bad singles was Man in the mirror originally peaking only at #24 in the UK (#2 after he passed away)

in the US the first 5 singles all went to #1, which shows how big he was back then

Sigh No More is great too smile.gif
Got Number Ones as well, not sure it’s the most definitive Michael Jackson best of due to some of the hits which aren’t on it, but at least Thriller seems to have beaten it.

the singles from Sigh no more should have been massive, can't believe Little lion man peaked so low, same for Winter winds
and the same applies to the REM singles, Man on the moon is way too low and Everybody hurts deserved #1

one album I never got was 19, the singles were nice, very nice in fact but the rest of the album tracks I'm not crazy about them and her voice is not the same as in 21, but Chasing pacements and Hometown glory are amazing songs and Make you feel my love is a beautiful cover

What a legacy this record has biggrin.gif
The album cover alone...

When I first heard Lucy In The Sky... and A Day In The Life, my mind was blown - and the songs were 30 years old by then! On the whole, I’d say their previous album Revolver stands up a little better to repeated listening and deserves at least some of the limelight Sgt Pepper has taken every 10 years or so on anniversaries etc. Good to see it here though!

Yep, and if we're splitting hairs didn't all the tracks from X make the Top 100 - they probably don't all have videos though so I guess no point listing them all smile.gif

West Side Story was one of my favourite movies as a kid, think I had the OST on tape. I was surprised to see some of these old albums in here, then I realised they had deceptively 'short but high' chart runs as the album chart was little more than a Top 12 back then. Doesn't explain why so many people bought them at the time (but that's another matter)

This doesn’t include any positions for 2018 so it may be top 3 but it will be updated in time and I’m unsure what you mean about the sound of music, this was the film version was the most successful version

South Pacific is the other OST I was referring to: 315 weeks on chart, mostly very near or at the top, but enough of those weeks outside the top 10 that it can't possibly have enough points to beat Queen's 31,453

Dannyboy -- Are the Top 100 Albums scored by an 'Inverse Top 100 Points System'?

That's 100 Points for No.1 down to 1 Point for No.100.

How did you score the Albums from the time when the Chart was much smaller than a Top 100?

Such as in the 1950's and the 1960's?

Dannyboy -- The OCC give 'Greatest Hits' by Queen too many Chart Weeks.

If you look - carefully - you will see that they have given it the 7 Week Chart Run of 'Greatest Hits I & II' from 1994.

W/E 19th November 1994 -- 'Greatest Hits I & II' -- 37-40-50-43-40-39-44

They then have it falling to No.85 on W/E 7th January 1995 and rising to No.83 on W/E 14th January 1995. But, only those
No.85 and No.83 Positions actually belong to 'Greatest Hits'.

So 'Greatest Hits', (1981), needs to 'lose' 7 Top 100 Weeks, 7 Top 75 Weeks, and 4 Top 40 Weeks. They belong to a 1994 Double Album.

Streaming giving all the greatest hits sets a big boost then. I'm still not too keen on streaming propping up GHs but it's not like most of them were selling nothing before streaming anyhow.

Hi Dannyboy,

I love these lists you put out here and decided to register a Buzzjack account and reply.

I'm also working on an UK albums database and lists like these help me compare numbers. Good news is some numbers match, but the bad news is that there's also a lot that doesn't match.

I'll be investigating my numbers to come up with explanations for differences and I'll report back. For now, I have checked your "bottom 25" numbers and found a few big differences and some smaller ones.

The biggest differences I found are:

* Guns N' Roses - Greatest Hits is, according to my numbers, at #73 with 9856 pts (1 hp, 311 wks)
* Robbie Williams - Life Thru A Lens is at #90 with 9296 pts (1 hp, 147 wks)
* Ed Sheeran - Divide is at #91 with 9228 pts
* Rod Stewart- The Best Of shouldn't be in the list, since you combine three different greatest hits albums (from 1976: 1630 pts, 1989: 7458 pts and 1992: 43 pts)

Smaller differences (< 15 pts) found for Ellie Goulding, Rihanna, Radiohead, Seekers, Take That, Bruno Mars, Dire Straits, Coldplay, Madonna, Lionel Richie and Phil Collins.

Let me know if you want me to give more of my numbers.

Cheers,
Ronnie

I’ll look into these when I’m off work but generally I wait until an album hits 100 weeks so that’s why Ed Sheeran isn’t on yet

For a studio album, AM's longevity is astounding cool.gif

I always think Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not should be in the top 100 when I see how many weeks it’s had but most of them have been in the lower part of the charts

Hi,

I checked another three albums and found the following differences:

I have ABBA - Gold (Greatest Hits) at 38,623 points (HP: 1, WKS: 875) and my chartrun matches OCC's site. Do you know of any errors on OCC on this chartrun? Note that my chartrun excludes the five week run during 2014/2018 for Gold/More Gold - Greatest Hits (OCC also treats this as a separate album/chartrun).

I have Bob Marley & The Wailers - Legend at 36,315 points (HP: 1, WKS: 863) and my chartrun matches OCC's site, except for July 10, 1999 when OCC puts this album incorrectly at #35 where it should have been at #30. Do you know of any other errors on OCC on this chartrun?

I have Ed Sheeran - Divide at 9,488 points (HP: 1, WKS: 101) and my chartrun matches OCC's site.

Regards,

Ronnie

Very very close

Posted by: RonnieV 17th February 2019, 09:20 AM

I compared the score for "The Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd with my numbers. I have that album at 26,707 points (peak: 2, wks: 532) and my chartrun matches OCC's chartrun. Do you have any corrections to the website for this chartrun?

And some discrepancies in the lower regions:
- I have "No Jacket Required" by Phil Collins at 9,338 points (peak: 1, wks: 177). This is including 1 week of the Deluxe Edition in 2016 and fully matches the OCC's website chartrun.

- I have "Life Thru A Lens" by Robbie Williams at 9,291 points (peak: 1, wks: 147). I updated my number after I found out that the OCC website has the incorrect chart for July 10, 1999 (when OCC puts this album incorrectly at #33 where it actually was at #38). All other weeks match OCC's chartrun.

- I have "Glory Days" by Little Mix in the Top 100 at 8,716 points (peak: 1, wks: 117). My chartrun matches OCC's chartrun.

Regards,
Ronnie

Not really a fan of 80s music and my top 3 80s albums are all released in 89
Stone Roses - Stone Roses
De La Soul - 3 feet high and rising
The Cure - Disintegration
Which show the best way to do an album in the 80s was to get f***ed up on drugs, any drugs.

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours overtaking Queen's GH has been inevitable since they started pushing Queen's GH1-3 instead. Looks like Ed's + will grab a top 10 place soon, before X goes on to replace it.

Good to see Dua joining the list. Soon to be followed by TGS... Funnily enough, I checked the total for The Stone Roses debut (4 separate entries on the OCC website) a few months ago and it's only a few hundred points away.

One of the reasons I got into music was I loved all of the stats etc. That is why cricket is my favourite sport!!

That's a significant change this week with Ed Sheeran moving into the top 10. The most recent album in that top 10 was Abba Gold from 1992 but the music that made up the top 10 was all from the 1950s to the early 1980s.
