Fellowes suggested in a guest column in Tuesday's Racing Post that his first Royal Ascot winner, Sandringham scorer Thanks Be, should have been thrown out due to jockey Hayley Turner's misuse of the whip – action which incurred a nine-day ban for the rider. Prescott, who oversees the only string in Newmarket whose work riders do not carry a whip, spoke strongly on the issue and said: "The point is simple, the rules should be the same for everyone, and if you have a rule it must be enforced. I'd have no problem with it if they got rid of the rule entirely, but my preference would be to have the rule as it is and enforce it. "I can't see any logical reason for not enforcing the rule. I don't understand why people think it is complicated. If a jockey weighs in light the horse loses the race – why is it different if they break the whip rules? "If you lost the race it would put an end to it instantly. Jockeys shouldn't have an option to break the rules and not lose the race." Prescott also believes the rule creates a potential perception issue for the sport.

The 11-1 winner, ridden by Silvestre de Sousa for trainer Mark Johnston, won from 100-30 shot Mirage Dancer with 25-1 outsider Desert Encounter third.

Both riders had their licences withdrawn pending Thursday's inquiry when the positive tests were returned, with their six-month suspensions backdated to the beginning of March. Neither rider will be eligible to receive a new licence until September 7 at the earliest. While Rodriguez, based with Michael Dods and successful in the 2017 Ebor aboard Nakeeta, revealed via a statement issued by the Professional Jockeys Association in March of his failed test, Lundie's suspension only came to light this week.

Officials at the track had done everything possible in a bid to beat the temperatures, which reached a record high for July at 38.1C in Cambridge and could be the hottest day on record in Britain. Charlie Moore, clerk of the course, told Sky Sports Racing: "We've gone up a degree a race and we're now 3C higher than we thought we would be, which was 32C, and we'd hoped to have finished racing by the time it reached that temperature.

The John Gosden-trained evens favourite pulled clear in the final furlong to win from Circus Maximus and I Can Fly. The three-year-old, owned by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, was briefly trapped in a pocket but came through to win the mile prize comfortably. It means an 11th Group One victory for Dettori in 62 days.

The injury is thought to have been sustained during his Group One Sussex Stakes victory at Goodwood last week.

The horse won the Cheltenham race in March by a record 15 lengths under Mark Walsh for Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell. It was an eighth win in the race for owner JP McManus, and only the second five-year-old to triumph in 34 years.

And multiple Group One winner Roaring Lion has died after suffering from colic. Five-year-old Espoir D'Allen fell when returning to Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell's yard in early August. Cromwell said the team at Fethard Equine Hospital "deemed that it was inhumane to persist with treatment". He added: "On their advice, we made the tough decision." Espoir D'Allen, who had not raced since winning the Champion Hurdle in March, won eight of his nine starts over hurdles and Frank Berry, racing manager to owner JP McManus, said: "He gave us some great days." Roaring Lion, trained by John Gosden to win the Eclipse, Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the son of Kitten's Joy, appeared to be on the road to recovery after twice having surgery for colic in recent weeks. David Redvers, of Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire, where Roaring Lion was housed, said the horse was put to sleep on Friday after an ultrasound examination.

Sir Michael Stoute's stable star, who won the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot this season, was pulled up and dismounted halfway up the Warren Hill Polytrack canter, put into a horse ambulance under the supervision of vets Baker McVeigh and later underwent surgery. Peter Stanley, spokesman for owner-breeder Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, said on Thursday: "Crystal Ocean has had two screws inserted in a hind cannon bone and has come through the surgery successfully. It should in no way affect his future stud career." Favourite for next month's Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot and a general 7-1 chance for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Crystal Ocean had a glittering career for the Freemason Lodge and Beech Hurst team over the past four seasons, winning eight of his 17 races and more than £2 million in prize-money.

The five-year-old finished one-and-three-quarter lengths clear of Cleonte, with Max Dynamite third. Stradivarius trailed Andrew Balding-trained Cleonte entering the home straight, but Dettori reeled in the leader for a comfortable victory. What a staying horse, Stradivarius is. St Leger today. Looking forward to it.

The 28-1 winner, which is co-owned by former England striker Michael Owen, produced a marvellous finish to beat Growl by half a length.
