Hello and such. If you are interested in seeing the 2021 End Of Year chart, ARIA will be posting it next week and I will post it in last year's thread when they do

Dec 24th + 25th matches pretty closely to the week before that. So if nothing else here is a stark visualisation of just how much data was missing last week with how much some of these songs have climbed. This is Mariah Carey's 4th time in a row ascending to the top spot for a single week, and Wham!'s second time ever at #2 (originally spending a long time at #3 back in the '80s). Michael Buble retains his status as 3rd highest and this time he's beaten all of the secular music and gets a new peak of #3. Brenda Lee should be rubbing shoulders with them in the top 4 but with what data is counted she just sneaks into the top 10 for the first time. In general most Christmas music is at a new high, given that last year's tracking weeks were even worse, so short of a paradigm shift, we should see Christmas songs chart higher and higher in the next few years. I'll also make special notice to point out Chris Rea, Jose Feliciano & Shakin' Stevens whose songs have never made the top 50 before (notably Jose hadn't made the top 100 in the streaming era at all before). This is also true of Paul McCartney a little lower down, while Kylie Minogue enters with her "Santa Baby" cover that hasn't charted since its original release either. This is also not enough to stop "Heat Waves" which has now spent 11 months in the top 10. Not much to note on the album chart but Adele's still #1, and the Encanto soundtrack pops in, assumably ready for bigger things next week. The worst #1 hit of 2021 is also now the worst #1 hit of 2022 so it'll be interesting to see if that holds up 12 months later. After weeks of seeming destined to never chart, Lost Frequencies now has his 2nd ever top 10 hit, as does Calum Scott. But if we're gonna talk about new peaks on the chart then the big elephant in the room is that after some 17 years of being a #29 peaker, "Mr. Brightside" is now a #23 peaker. I've said it before but it bears repeating that ARIA have historically miscounted its streams forever, initially seeming to count close to none of them and lately seeming to only count the Spotify streams. This is an odd week so I can't confirm but it looks like they may have finally sorted things out. That's not to say this new peak is solely for that, as it did hit a new weekly streaming peak on Spotify thanks to NYE generally, but I was expecting it to land at around #40 this week given past experiences. Also this week, Encanto hits, though Hot Hits AU isn't acknowledging it yet so they might not be able to get much higher for now. What are Hot Hits Australia supporting you ask? Why of course it's more Australian quota landfill! Now we're still busy trying to get rid of last year's Australian quota landfill (Wiz Khalifa's "Walking On A Dream" sampler has been there for 10 *months* and counting, and general garbage man Jolyon Petch is still giving Stevie Nicks royalties), so generally it's not a good time for newly written Australian songs (unless David Kushner is Australian? Can't confirm it but most of his top cities are here). For a couple of weeks the top song on Hot Hits Australia was the Hooligan Hefs & Teddy Cream remix of Havana Brown's "We Run The Night", which of course was a top 10 hit back in 2011 (more fun facts, it was far more popular in Australia with the original version, not the Pitbull remix, although now because of Spotify tagging hell, the original has very lousy streaming numbers). This remix dropped months ago to fanfare that can only be described as Hooligan Hefs gets a decent pull for any new song he puts out, but even then it wasn't on my radar at all. The people who brought you "Look Into My Eyes" by Brando I assume pushed this to the forefront and so now Havana Brown is back in the top 50 as someone's vanity project that is a complete non-entity outside of this Spotify push. Oh but we're not done here because it was replaced a few days ago by a slightly (operative word) more interesting one as Luude's remix of "Down Under" started blowing up in New Zealand before catching on here. It's slightly more interesting because it's drum & bass which is not a common sighting on the charts and as someone who finds "Overkill" by Men At Work to be one of the best songs ever written, I should be thrilled, but honestly "Down Under" is so brutally overplayed that I can no longer ever fathom anyone choosing to listen to it. I don't have a problem with "Khe Sanh", "Thunderstruck", "Better", "Run To Paradise", "To Her Door" etc but this one gets me, so it's a pretty lousy state of affairs for what will be one of the biggest Australian hits of the year. Adele notches a 7th week at #1 which brings her rather close to the tally of "25", which managed 8 weeks at the top. The Weeknd might have something to say about that next week though. Encanto vaults into the top 10, and Radiohead go back in with big vinyl sales. |

Lauren Spencer-Smith debuts in the top 10 but probably won't last because Australia hates new music. Similar story with The Weeknd but it is notable because this is the first ever time that he's had album tracks appear on the chart, as seemingly a consistent hold out to this for no apparent reason except to maybe make his charting discography look neater. "Down Under" vaults into the top 20 perhaps hoping to be a future challenger for the Dance Chart #1 spot that has been held for 11 months by Glass Animals (ARIA spur of nothing decided "Heat Waves" was a dance song 8 months into its chart run and it debuted at #1, from this perspective "The Business" was a fluke #1 pre-categorisation). David Kushner arrives but he has a shit Spotify bio so I know nothing about him. I thought he might be Australian based on his top cities but ARIA doesn't seem to think so. He's also headed down after this debut. What is heading up however and is in a way a debut is "edamame", which you should know has been hovering on the Spotify chart for about 4-5 months now and I was beginning to believe that ARIA might never acknowledge it, but now it's catching 3rd wind so it looks to go even higher, though come End Of Year chart time we'll have to lament that it's missing a week of data. The Weeknd debuts at #1 on the album chart. On an unrelated note, Jim Carrey has spread harmful misinformation about vaccines in the past. Debuting behind him is an album I thought came out last year which is the new DOPE LEMON release, which is the ever-ongoing side project for Angus Stone not to be confused with Lady Of The Sunshine (notable for releasing a near note-for-note identical version of "Big Jet Plane" in 2009 to no fanfare), or his own solo career. If you combine all of this though it's his 3rd time getting a solo #2 album. Noted From Software acolyte Gunna scores his highest ever charting album this week. Next week has something for everyone(?): The Wombats, Lee Kernaghan, Lime Cordiale & Idris Elba, FKA twigs, Earl Sweatshirt, Bonobo. That won't be the case next week although I assume ARIA are taking our Racist Day holiday off and not updating with midweeks. So short of strange shenanigans we're in for a peculiar chart next week where perhaps Australia's hardest working and touring band of the last 30 years are finally getting their due with a top 50 hit single. I'm of course referring to The Wiggles who in response to their triple j Hottest 100 victory on the weekend were briefly #2 on all streaming platforms with their cover of Tame Impala's "Elephant". I can't confidently predict their final position because it's pretty volatile but don't be surprised if they reach the top 10 this week. Also thanks to landing at #2 in the Hottest 100, The Kid LAROI is very likely returning to #1 with "STAY". They replaced Meat Loaf at the top of the iTunes chart who I think could possibly sneak into the top 50 but I'm even less certain of that. I think in a twist on the kobbar formula, his chart boost was perhaps badly timed in Australia where the news broke late at night when nobody had time to dive deep into his catalogue, and further, a lot of people were quite pre-occupied with the Hottest 100 on the next day. Make no mistake, "Bat Out Of Hell" is the highest selling album of all time in Australia (just narrowly ahead of John Farnham's "Whispering Jack" on Platinum certifications) but his streaming impact was quite muted here compared to the UK. Oh and I should probably mention the return of "Lost" by Frank Ocean. Funnily enough it's just shy of 9 years since it first hit the top 50. Back in 2012 it was the song from "channel ORANGE" that triple j were most intent on spinning which helped it land at #8 on the Hottest 100, which helped it become an ARIA top 50 single. Amusingly, this one week top 50 hit actually has triple platinum status, the same as the other 10 year old song in the chart, Havana Brown's big top 10 hit "We Run The Night". If that's not a sign that comparing chart runs as the only relevant basis of popularity is misguided at best, well I have way more examples where that came from. Perhaps surprisingly, The Weeknd holds on for a 2nd week at #1 on the album chart, something he's never done before. Have to wonder if maybe The Wombats were unlucky with timing, unable to capitalise on their Hottest 100 success to drive first week sales. The band now have 3 #2 albums without a #1, which is the same as Backstreet Boys, Dead Letter Circus & Halsey, 1 less than King Gizz, and 3 less than Radiohead. Bonobo scores his first ever top 10 album this week, while also in the top 10 we have the unlikely collaboration between inexplicably popular Lime Cordiale, and inexplicably not primarily known as a musician Idris Elba. Apparently they met when Elba was in Australia shooting a movie and it blossomed into a full collaborative EP. Lower down Lee Kernaghan has a Greatest Hits set, and Cordae gets his 2nd top 50 album, though lower than he charted in 2019. Next week I'm expecting maybe more Meat Loaf here, and also probably Walker Hayes. |

I take it the Encanto songs are not as popular in AU as in the UK or US?

Dunno, though it's probably pretty in line with how unconventional soundtrack hits tend to go here. If Hot Hits Australia & Today's Top Hits wanted to get involved they'd easily be knocking on the top 2's door though.

Crazy how well Cold Heart has done in AUS. Parts of the chart do look pretty dated now with songs like Levitating still top 20. Making the US charts look fresh.

It monopolises the discourse so much that it's not a surprise that very little else usually happens on the relevant week. And of course, as you may well know by now, our nation proudly and democratically declared the best song of 2021 to be The Wiggles' cover of "Elephant" by Tame Impala. This is somewhat unprecedented for triple j's Hottest 100, which has never been won by a Like A Version (or a cover), and despite triple j being marketed as youth radio, they've never previously featured The Wiggles, arguably the biggest band for the extreme youth demographic. It is always worth noting that the Hottest 100 was initially devised in the '80s for the purpose of giving a voice to the people, in an era of very boomer-based 'Greatest of All Time' music lists that usually just devolve to putting "Stairway to Heaven" on another pedestal. With that in mind, though many at this point don't recall the history, the poll has been prone to not taking itself especially seriously. When the poll was limited to just music from the last year, it was first won by comedian Denis Leary's novelty hit "Asshole", beating out the more boring consensus choice of Radiohead's "Creep". We would further see silly winners such as "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" and "Thrift Shop", so in this sense, the poll being won by The Wiggles is par for the course. Now this has big effects on the ARIA Chart, and it has ever since the mid 2000s. So I present to you this week that for the first time ever, The Wiggles have an ARIA top 50 single, after 30 years of unironically some of the most extensive touring of any band from this country. It's also the highest ever charting Tame Impala song, and the first ever Like A Version to make the top 50 (Ocean Alley previously made the ARIA top 100 with their "Baby Come Back" cover, and DMA'S cover of "Believe" by Cher has been certified platinum. Then again, it is worth noting that back in the '80s, Anthony & Jeff of future Wiggles fame first found moderate fame here as members of The Cockroaches, a pub rock band who had a top 10 hit with "She's The One" in 1987. Jeff is no longer a member of The Wiggles but he and Murray both reunited with the band to perform on this cover. Emma has also since recording this cover left the band which means that we are now up to our 4th generation yellow Wiggle, who if she were on this track, would be the second youngest person to have an ARIA top 50 hit, after Willow Sage Hart. Anyway, there are 100 songs in the Hottest 100, and "STAY" got the runner up spot which is enough to push it back up to #1 for a 15th week, which is enough to tie it as the 2nd longest running #1 ever. It could take that title outright next week if it holds on. Interestingly enough, I believe this is the first time the Hottest 100 can be considered directly responsible for determining the week's ARIA #1 single, as it has constantly been narrowly held off. Glass Animals would have risen straight to #1 with "Heat Waves" on most weeks but it was peak "drivers license" era so it had to wait several weeks before finally getting there. Second runners up Spacey Jane also score their 2nd top 50 hit, you might recall they debuted on the chart a year ago with "Booster Seat" after that landed at #2 in the Hottest 100, so it's more evidence that triple j is doing all of the heavy lifting in actually promoting Australian artists to charting status. Most big climbs this week are also Hottest 100 entrants, but unrelated to this are top 50 entries for Charlie Puth & Gunna. I am also now remembering that last week "Eazy" by The Game & Kanye West was inexplicably left off the chart, which is the first new chart omission in a while. There is so little happening on the album chart that if not for Meat Loaf passing away, we may have had zero debuts on the chart (Walker Hayes was definitely close though). But as is, "Bat Out Of Hell" extends its lead as the highest selling album of all time in Australia, as it outsells everything this week, returning to #1. Meat Loaf couldn't quite crack the top 50 singles chart, I think potentially with his death coinciding with the Hottest 100, a lot of people (myself included!) were too preoccupied to dive into his catalogue at the time, so his streaming figures were a lot lower than in the UK. His return to the chart blocks Encanto's soundtrack from climbing to #1, though with no obvious competition I can see, it'll likely get there next week. Sing 2's soundtrack also gets a slight new peak, previously reaching #10. |

It just needs to make 8 more weeks at #1 to start making new waves, who knows? It may be able to hold onto #1 for another week with a lack of competition. I think "We Don't Talk About Bruno" could potentially climb to #1 but at the moment its lack of Spotify playlists are severely holding it back. Lost Frequencies takes advantage of margins to make a seemingly big jump into the top 5, while Luude reaches the top 10. Both are challenging Glass Animals to end their 52 week reign at #1 on the Dance chart. Speaking of Glass Animals, this week marks their 53rd week in the top 10, which is the first time a song has ever spent a year in the top 10, though thanks to Ed Sheeran's "Visiting Hours", it's not consecutive. We also now get a 3rd Encanto track in the top 50. On the other hand, Encanto still hasn't hit the top spot because The Weeknd has come in clutch with CD sales for "Dawn FM". It's otherwise another dreadfully quiet week with only 1 new entry, this coming from The Whitlams, who oddly enough got the majority of their points from digital sales. For those who were curious, The Whitlams are a piano rock & such band who were especially popular in the late '90s & early '00s. They took their name from former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, who actually announced one of the band's ARIA Award wins, as well as their #1 placing in the 1997 triple j Hottest 100 with "No Aphrodisiac". That's for sure their signature song despite never actually reaching the ARIA top 50. Next week should be a little more busy with new albums from Korn, Mitski & Black Country, New Road, something for everyone. |

It's starting to look like the last week for it as it's running on increasingly slim margins which means probably one of the cringe options from the current top 3 will take over. "The Joker And The Queen" almost certainly won't factor into this conversation as it's really struggling on streaming, though it might sneak top 10 with good sales. Also yes, "Heat Waves" is getting close to returning to #1, almost a year after it first got there. We actually have debuts of note this week though. Leading the pack is the new Flume track, which debuts slightly higher than "Rushing Back", making it his highest debut since "Say It" in 2016. Also of note is that he brought on MAY-A for this song, who previously made the top 50 with her EP last year, and tragically landed at #101 in triple j's Hottest 100 last month with "Time I Love To Waste". Admittedly it does put her as the latest in the long list of Australian women whose best success comes when they feature on either a male producer or a male rapper's song. Maybe Sony will get her, her own crossover hit eventually. Elsewhere, Tate McRae is releasing new music, which is something Billie Eilish did last year, so obviously she's copying her. It'll probably turn into a hit when radio gets on board with it, something I have never said about a Billie Eilish song. We have a belated debut for Jnr. Choi, a song with the worst artwork ever, which also sounds like the musical equivalent of an NFT. Bruno Mars did enter the top 100 last year for a little while with "Talking To The Moon". You might have noticed that there is not a new entry for Juice WRLD's "Cigarettes", if you're a regular reader you probably know why. On the album chart, Korn score their 3rd #1 album, both the previous two being back in their heyday when they were regularly scoring crossover hits and making strange bedfellows with Backstreet Boys & *NSYNC on Total Request Live. Sadly their residence at the top keeps Australian Bird Calls from getting there, which had a new physical release last week, scoring a new peak. An oft-discussed thing with regards to the Australian music scene is how triple j has a monopoly over much of the popular alternative scene. It's to the point where local festival line ups are often exclusively populated by bands & artists who get played on the station, and anyone else is kind of flat out of luck getting promoted here. You could also translate it the opposite way though, where if it were more feasible to have international festival line ups in the 2020s, there might be bands & artists getting picked up by triple j in response to this. For instance, the first time they started regularly playing Drake was in early 2015 around when he announced his first ever Australian shows, suffice to say probably not a coincidence. So I go on this tangent because we have two top 10 debuts from artists you might think would be right at home on triple j in yesteryear, but they seem to be missing the boat on these ones. So despite the relative lack of support ("Working For The Knife" got pretty good airplay on digital sister station Double J), Black Country, New Road & Mitski both chart for the first time, debuting in the top 10. I suspect that unless Mitski somehow gets a top 50 hit, the station won't realise how much the TikTok kids love her. Speaking of triple j, 2 decades ago, Bodyjar were huge on the station, and this week they score their first top 50 album entry in 8 years. Another curiosity this week I want to shed light on is about that perennial Maroon 5 compilation. I forgot to mention that it got a new peak last week, but what happened this week is that it disappeared from ARIA's Catalogue Albums Chart. In a peculiar coincidence or probably not, this is the week that the set would have finally climbed to #1, having overtaken Ed Sheeran's "÷". It remains to be seen if this is a temporary blip, or ARIA editorialising. We have a pretty good comparison point because Eminem's "Curtain Call" could potentially go to #1 on the Catalogue Chart for the first time itself soon, though I'd be quite surprised if ARIA removed that. If this spills over the the actual album chart, don't say I didn't warn you. Next week we have new albums from Eddie Vedder, alt-J, Huskii, Slash and Big Thief to potentially make an impact. This basically happened 5-6 months ago again this year and with the exception of Mariah Carey's stint at #1 and I guess "STAY"'s return to #1 a few weeks back. At this point the Spotify numbers are so low that I can pretty safely declare this the weakest #1 week since maybe 2008. Can't say for sure if this will happen again next week because "Cold Heart" had a random sales boost earlier this week, but I sure do miss the good old days when not liking a song meant you could at least enjoy watching it descend back down the chart after a few months. On an unrelated note, "Heat Waves" got back to #1 on Spotify yesterday. If its sales weren't so low it might be able to challenge for #1 officially but I think it's gonna still be a few hundred short. Australia still hates new music but we did get some entries this week. Ed Sheeran doesn't quite hit the top 10 with "The Joker And The Queen" and is probably going to start slipping down the chart fairly quickly though sales are strong. In a true twist, Tate McRae is seeming to take more than 2 weeks to peak so we might actually have a New Hit on our hands here. Speaking of which, I now have a chance to do the best kind of elitism to say I was ahead of the curve on a Disney Channel influencer as one of the at least dozens of people into "Remember Me" back in 2020. Now Dove Cameron has her first charting entry here with "Boyfriend" which also looks to be climbing though it might be too edgy for Australian radio so I'm not sure how much higher it'll go. The Encanto soundtrack continues to live not quite its best life as the new holder of the Future Nostalgia award for Just Let Me Have One Week FFS. This week's culprit is an unlikely source, or at least one who's never had a chance to prove their chart mettle before. Sydney rapper Huskii (not to be confused with Melbourne folk rock band Husky) reaches the top spot with his debut album. This is especially curious given that the album chart is usually dominated by either singles chart stars or long established fanbases. In fact the last artist to debut at #1 on the album chart without a single chart entry beforehand requires you to go back 6 months to when Luke Hemmings did it. But that's a boring technicality so if we really want to make it count, we have to go all the way back to 2009 when Susan Boyle's debut album entered at #1, also a week before she first entered the singles chart with "I Dreamed A Dream" and "Wild Horses". Debuting behind him is alt-J who score their 4th top 10 album though the continue their downward trend ever since reaching #2 with "This Is All Yours". Eddie Vedder scores his 2nd solo top 10 album this week, some 11 years after he did so with "Ukelele Songs". This week's quite long acclaimed album to chart is from Big Thief who chart for the first time, don't forget to buy and/or stream Beach House's new album. The Euphoria soundtrack has been flooding the streaming chart to the point that it almost feels suspiciously low this week but maybe next week will catch it up, nonetheless it hits the top 50 this week. Lastly to use the funny /r/indieheads joke, Spoon manage to prove that they are C O N S I S T E N T as for the 3rd time they chart between #41 & #50. Though they reached a career high of #21 with their last album so who's to say? This week's edition of ARIA Be Wilin Dr. Dre re-enters the top 50 with "2001", and perhaps he could have also done so on the singles chart with "Still D.R.E.", but nope, none of his tracks are being tracked by the machine so there's nothing going there. Eminem's tracks are though and "Without Me" + "Lose Yourself" are attempting to return to the top 50 next week as I suspect they were already close this week. Speaking of Eminem, "Curtain Call" does in fact top the Catalogue Albums Chart this week, despite speculation from me that ARIA do not want to see that chart topped by residual streams of a catalogue. It is possibly because I put a word in that Maroon 5's set has returned to said chart, so never say that I let my personal biases get in the way of my desires for an accurate chart. Also Juice WRLD does chart this week with "Cigarettes", now that it's no longer high enough to make the top 50. |

In those 24 hours we've gotten the huge revelation that ARIA is finally adding YouTube data to the chart, on such a bizarre history making week that calls back to Billboard's 2013 chart when "Harlem Shake" got to #1, except that ARIA actually warned us about it rather than just dropping a chaotic chart with no explanation. What does this mean for the chart though? It's hard to say because accurate, reliable YouTube data for Australia is hard to come by, and I don't really trust the charts I've seen. The only thing I'm certain of is that the Encanto tracks are going to vault up the chart. Notably ARIA's midweeks have "What Else Can I Do?" poised to enter the top 50, which I'd otherwise have expected to be around #100 this week. There is a strong possibility that "We Don't Talk About Bruno" climbs to #1 this week, but I won't really know until the chart comes out. What sources I do see also have "Bad Habits" having bizarrely strong YouTube in spite of everyone having had a solid 8 months to realise that it's one of the ugliest music videos ever. The track also rebounds this week thanks to the Bring Me The Horizon version which oddly only popped into the Spotify chart a week after it came out, which might imply some stability next week and maybe the shock return to #1. Either way, wield your tinfoil hats and begin to speculate if ARIA are intentionally sabotaging "Heat Waves" or if they're really just sick of "Mr. Brightside" and "Dreams". Speaking of ARIA hating on the classics, they once again forgot about Dre, however Eminem does climb into the top 50 with "Without Me" and "Lose Yourself", whose trajectory I can no longer predict but under the old model I think they might have both held in the top 50 next week. In an otherwise pretty dead week, Jack Harlow debuts with "Nail Tech" which will certainly climb next week. Also entering the top 50 is Em Beihold who has finally caught strong headwind on Spotify after being stuck just outside of the top 50 for weeks. On the album chart it is probably not a surprise to see Midnight Oil at #1. They practically invented debuting at #1, as their "Species Deceases" EP in 1985 was the first ever #1 debut on the singles chart in Australia. This would be followed with some international success where they unfortunately get written off as a weird 'you had to be here' moment for US Alternative radio, despite achieving mass reverence in Australia. For the albums chart, this is the band's 6th #1. Half of the Australian entries in the chart this week are from Western Australia this week, as alongside Tame Impala & Spacey Jane, arrives the latest album from baroque art poppers Methyl Ethel, who are probably still wondering why I went out in the pouring rain to get a haircut yesterday. Oh and Maroon 5 hit a new peak this week. It's unclear what YouTube data will do to affect this next week. It is however clear that Gang Of Youths will be debuting at #1, ahead of new albums from Slash, Avril Lavigne, Central Cee & Tears For Fears. Something for everyone. I'm here for any ARIA decisions that sabotage a 'Heat Waves' return to #1 tbh.

On a casual glance you might question if anything has changed, and I think it's a little difficult to fully determine how much it's affecting things just because this particular week seems like a lot of what would otherwise benefit was trending downward. Notably the Encanto stuff which would've likely all dropped a bit this week but instead has a climb so minor that you might attribute it to general stability randomness. Most of the beneficiaries otherwise seem to be the biggest of the biggest, the tracks that have a billion or so views on YouTube. You know, the songs that people clearly like on their own and don't need to be prodded to listen to them. The Weeknd is a big beneficiary in the top 50. It was also probably the difference that pushed Ed Sheeran to #3 this week with "Bad Habits". Oh and anyway the main story this week is that for the 2nd time this year we've had a song return to #1 roughly a year after getting there. But if you find the whole Christmas thing boring and predictable then surely you'd agree that this is a really funny and/or bizarre circumstance. Perhaps every March we'll be calling for "Heat Waves" to return to #1 going forward. This is also an interesting week to note the variance that the top of the chart provides, which chart runs alone don't demonstrate. For instance, in February last year "Heat Waves" was doing nearly 2.5 million streams on Spotify, and was #2 on ARIA. Right now it's barely staying above 1 million, doing lower numbers than the week last year that it dropped to #11. The Winter Olympics were on recently and I feel bizarrely inclined to mention that Australia's (not to mention the entire Southern Hemisphere) first ever gold medal at the event was in 2002, when speed-skater Stephen Bradbury was an unlikely finalist, qualifying for the semi-finals after a disqualification allowed him to take a faster skater's place. His strategy in the semi-finals & finals was to hang back and hope his faster opponents crashed. This indeed happened twice and now he's a national hero. Arguably Glass Animals are too, now that Dave has an ass tattoo of Australia. Meanwhile there's just one top 50 entry this week and despite being a 2.5 year old song, it replaces a 19.5 year old song so it makes the chart remarkably fresher on average. That being Labrinth getting in with "All For Us", mostly thanks to the Zendaya version. Awkwardly Labrinth should probably have another top 50 entry with "Mount Everest". I was really hoping with the addition of YouTube data, ARIA might audit their chart a bit better this week and add some of those missing tracks, but no, this outdated chart practice that disproportionately affects music made by people of colour seems to continue. If you live in Australia, you will not be surprised that Gang Of Youths are debuting at #1 (well kind of, ARIA's Chart suggests that they climbed up from #399 last week). This is the 2nd time they've done so, and it's fair to say that ever since the release of that last album, they've heralded the crown as the local band that everyone creams over the most. Not to mention that much like Tame Impala in 2015, I've certainly noticed a lot more international attention for them as well. Just behind them is a debut for Slash which I mistakenly predicted a few weeks ago not realising that the physical release was not yet due, so Slash missed the top 50 running on just digital sales, but now lands at a #2 position that almost certainly would not have been boosted if the digital sales came through now. Seemingly peaking quite some time ago, Avril Lavigne bucks the trend and scores her highest charting album in a decade getting to #3. She's now scored 7 for 7 on top 10 albums. Central Cee enters that rare legion of British rappers with top 10 albums alongside people like Dave & KSI, while Tears For Fears have finally sown those seeds of love, scoring their highest ever charting album that is not titled "Songs From The Big Chair" and does not include such eternal bangers as "Shout", "Head Over Heels" and the other one. Local country or thereabouts singer Casey Barnes narrowly misses matching his highest chart peak, landing 1 spot behind. He bares no relation to local legend Jimmy Barnes. I am also uncertain if YouTube is impacting the album chart though given the very minor effect on the singles chart, I can't imagine there'd be much to see here either. Next week should see new entries for Missy Higgins, Sabaton & Marillion. ARIA's midweek headline mentions Encanto but not the article itself so I suspect maybe this is its chance to finally hit #1. |

I'd been wondering why Bruno wasn't charting higher in Australia, hadn't considered that ARIA wasn't counting YouTube data.
Interesting disparity for Avril's album, #3 in Australia but #19 in New Zealand - wonder if that's due to differences in sales/streaming ratios or more than that. |

Interesting disparity for Avril's album, #3 in Australia but #19 in New Zealand - wonder if that's due to differences in sales/streaming ratios or more than that. Though it's obviously just not quite as big a deal here, I feel like the margins have been so slim that Spotify not including 'Bruno' on major playlists was genuinely the margin that kept it off #1, hard to say if YouTube data could've gotten there at peak. With Avril I feel like Australia's album pure sales market has tended to be a little healthier than NZ's so a lot of albums that just poke ahead of the cavalcade of streaming hits here get lost in the shuffle in NZ. Like the gap between top 10 and not charting has never been smaller 14/03/2022 Singles 01 01 82 01 HEAT WAVES Glass Animals 02 02 35 01 STAY The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber 03 04 30 01 COLD HEART (PNAU REMIX) Elton John & Dua Lipa 04 03 37 01 BAD HABITS Ed Sheeran 05 05 16 02 ABCDEFU Gayle 06 06 14 05 WHERE ARE YOU NOW Lost Frequencies feat. Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators Glass Animals lodge an 8th week at #1. They continue to extend their lead on Spotify and their challengers continue to not exist, so they're pretty cozy for a 9th week. We do have a busy week of entries this week, Camila Cabello leading the pack with "Bam Bam" which is off to a pretty good start and hasn't dropped back yet. Labrinth & Zendaya replace their entry from last week with a new one from the most recent season of Euphoria, though it doesn't look like sticking around at the moment. We have another classic Powers That Be moment on the ARIA Chart where radio and Spotify have both massively lapped up "Following The Sun", the SUPER-Hi track from 2020 which is simultaneously top 10 on radio and debuted at #1 on Hot Hits Australia out of nowhere. It's a pretty good track too but if you're wondering why Australia randomly decided to get into it, there's your answer. Just below it we are faced with deciding who is more gross & unpleasant, Tyga or Dr. Luke. Moving on, Elley Duhe has her first lead artist entry, having previously made the top 30 alongside Zedd on "Happy Now". As someone who bought this song 2 years ago and long since established a crackpot theory that it was ghostwritten by my favourite singer, this is all very strange but you do you TikTok. Dave has charted twice before in Australia, always with assistance from a more established artist (Ed Sheeran, Stormzy), but this time he breaks out on his own and it looks like he's gonna make a big move as "Starlight" is #5 on Spotify right now(!). Lastly Elley Duhe does not even have the oldest debut because Jaymes Young has finally broken through with "Infinity" which has been stuck just outside the top 50 for weeks. Things will get even older next week as Nirvana look set to chart for the first time in a long time with "Something In The Way", challenging Megan & Dua for the top debut. Things have finally happened on the album chart as the Encanto soundtrack gets to #1. Over the weekend we had a flood relief concert with numerous big names in Australian music. Among those were Missy Higgins who had just released a mini-album inspired by the TV Series "Total Control", the title track is also a cover of The Motels' top 10 hit. Missy has now had 3 #3 albums to go with her 3 #1s. Also entering this week is Sabaton, whose last album made the top 10 but here they make do with #25. Next week should have entries from The Wiggles, Rex Orange County, Ghost & the Hoodoo Gurus, something for everyone. This post has been edited by Dircadirca: 16th March 2022, 03:23 PM |

Wow I hadn't seen that 'Starlight' surged that much on Aussie Spotify (in fact is up another place to #4 now)! Also been rising in New Zealand, Canada and various European countries but unsurprisingly no sign of it breaking through in the US yet.
