New #1 and it's none other than Brenda. cheeseblock.png This is actually not the first time in the streaming era that Mariah missed out on #1 - in 2020 her song was stuck behind 'Why Oh Why' by L.A.B. - but it's the first time she's missed out to another Christmas song. Three more Christmas classics make their NZ chart debut, led by Paul McCartney. I'm not checking all of the songs getting new peaks but 'Snowman' is definitely one of them, now at #11 after previously peaking at #20. Only 10 of the top 40 are not Christmas songs, with the longest runners 'In The Air' and 'Dreams' placing 3rd and 7th respectively among those, meaning they're likely getting streamed even more than usual at this time. DeadBanana.gif I'm expecting the chart to look extra stale next week after the Christmas clearout but we'll see.

Back to normal now with SZA resuming her #1 reign on both charts. Several songs getting new peaks while others are rebounding, and as expected 'In The Air' and 'Dreams' are higher than they've been since last January and two Januarys ago respectively. Only two new entries this week courtesy of Stephen Sanchez (with Em Beihold credited!) and Libianca who apparently was on The Voice in the US? Today I learned! 'People' is only impacting in a few countries right now, we'll see if it spreads further.

It may not surprise you to learn that 'Sure Thing' is Miguel's first solo chart entry in NZ. He previously appeared with Mariah Carey on '#Beautiful', peaking at #10 in 2013, and with Kygo on 'Remind Me To Forget', peaking at #29 in 2018. So based on that he appears once every five years, ha. Skrillex has actually had six chart entries, including four as lead artist: 'Where Are U Now' (#3 peak), 'Bangarang' (#14), 'Make It Bun Dem' (#16), and 'Purple Lamborghini' (#34). And Dean Lewis has had just 'Be Alright' which peaked at #3. In news unrelated to new entries, Stephen Sanchez climbs 10 places, but we'll see if the Spotify glitchiness affects him next week.

New #1! 'Flowers' is Miley's second #1 in NZ, nearly ten years after 'We Can't Stop' was her first. ('Wrecking Ball' stalled at #2.) A massive improvement from her last era when 'Midnight Sky' peaked at #27 and 'Prisoner' at #24. Further down, 'Sure Thing' climbs into the top 5, 'People' into the top 15, and the other two new entries are from SZA (giving her 5 singles in the top 40) and Coi Leray. SZA holds at #1 on the album chart despite losing her hold at #1 on the singles chart.

Well three weeks in, Miley Cyrus already has her longest-running #1 here, since her only other chart-topper 'We Can't Stop' only reigned for a week. This week's highest new entry is from The Kid LAROI as 'Love Again' matches the #17 peak of 'So Done', a ways off the #6 peak of his last single 'Thousand Miles' but we'll see if it climbs like it's projected to in the UK. The only other debut is from Rema and Selena Gomez, obviously it's Rema's first entry in NZ but for Selena it's her first appearance since 'Ice Cream' with BLACKPINK got to #18 in 2020.

On the album chart, Sam Smith falls just short of #1 but improves on the #2 peak of their last album Love Goes. Lil Yachty earns a new career peak in NZ, beating the #23 peak of Lil Boat 2 in 2018. Not the same result for Ava Max, as Diamonds And Dancefloors just sneaks into the top 40. Her debut Heaven & Hell only peaked at #20 and only spent a week in the chart.

'Die For You' is instantly the highest charting The Weeknd & Ariana Grande collab, as 'Save Your Tears' only peaked at #9 and 'Love Me Harder' at #28. I haven't been paying attention to 'Calm Down' here but a bit strange for it to suddenly re-enter at #13 after only one previous charting week at#40 a month ago. As for Niall Horan, this is only his third top 40 hit in New Zealand, he hasn't charted since 'Slow Hands' peaked at #8 in 2017!

On the album chart, it's Gorillaz' first #1 album in New Zealand. ohmy.gif Their previous high was #2 for their self-titled back in 2001, recently they got to #9 with The Now Now and #3 with Humanz.

He even blocks Morgan Wallen from the #1 album, but Morgan still improves on his previous release, which only peaked at #27 although it charted for 9 weeks. Ruel gets his first top 10 album as well, he previously charted at #40 with Bright Lights Red Eyes and #18 with Free Time. Slowthai's previous release Tyron peaked at #13 so diminishing returns for him.

Only one new entry in the singles chart and two in the album chart. Last Night, Calm Down, Ceilings are the only songs getting new peaks as well. But Miley finally gets her second #1 album in NZ, nearly 14 years after the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack got there in 2009! She's had four #2 albums with Breakout, Can't Be Tamed, Bangerz and Plastic Hearts all stalling there. Speaking of which, Morgan Wallen's album stalls at #2 again, but we'll see if he climbs, maybe even next week.

On the album chart, Morgan Wallen gets to #1 after all, a rare case of an album climbing to #1. Unknown Mortal Orchestra earn their highest-charting album to date (previous best was #9 for Sex & Food in 2018), and U2 continue their top 10 streak of all but their debut album. Also a slight improvement on their last release, Songs Of Surrender, which peaked at #9 in 2017.

A decently busy album chart this week! Lana Del Rey gets her second #1 album in NZ, her first being Ultraviolence. She's had four #2 albums including the two before this one. This time it's Luke Combs at #2, but that's his best result in NZ so far, his previous best being the #9 peak of his previous release Growin' Up. Jimin's at #8 with his debut and Fall Out Boy earns their fifth top 10 album, not quite matching the #6 peak of their last release MANIA. Depeche Mode now have a dozen charting albums in NZ, none of them have charted higher than #24 and none of them have spent more than 5 weeks in the chart. So despite charting at #38, Memento Mori actually continues a remarkably consistent streak for them.

On the singles chart, Ed Sheeran was just touring NZ two months ago but that momentum doesn't take 'Eyes Closed' any higher than #11. Then again, it's done better than '2step' and 'Celestial' which both did not chart, and also 'The Joker & The Queen' which peaked at #26. If 'Eyes Closed' peaks there it'll be his fifth #11 hit in NZ, following 'Small Bump', 'Happier', 'Visiting Hours' and 'Merry Christmas'. The other new entry is courtesy of Jimin, his first NZ singles chart entry as well.

'Flowers' returns to #1 after 6 weeks! This is its sixth week at #1. Not much else happening on the singles chart except for new entries from Tyler, The Creator, Luke Combs, and Jisoo all sneaking in. On the album chart, Melanie Martinez has her first #1 in NZ. Her previous release K-12 got to #8 while Cry Baby peaked at #21. Boygenius debut at #2, and Tyler, The Creator returns to the top 10 after the album previously peaked at #2.

Fifty Fifty's 'Cupid' is the only new top 10 single this week, helping to block Drake from getting there, oop! He just had four top 10 hits simultaneously in November. Labrinth scores a new entry too, his last one was 'I'm Tired' with Zendaya, which peaked at #16 last year. It's his fifth total, his other three being 'Earthquake', 'Beneath Your Beautiful' and 'Thunderclouds'. Bakar and Russ both sneak in at the bottom of the chart, and Lewis Capaldi has a re-entry, likely due to his documentary.

On the album chart, it's NF's first #1 album in NZ. A big improvement on Clouds which peaked at #11 two years ago, and also The Search which peaked at #3 in 2019 (that's the one with 'Let You Down' on it). Meteora charts for the first time since Chester's passing, it originally spent three weeks at #1. And Daniel Caesar has his first charting album since 2017 when Freudian peaked at #39.

This is a big, historic week in NZ chart history! The recurrent era has begun as RMNZ introduces a Catalogue chart for both singles and albums. The cut-off for the official chart is now that singles and albums must have been released in the past 18 months. You'll see an exception has been made for 'Die For You', and clearly they must have completely overlooked 'Hell N Back' oops. I haven't seen yet how they plan to address Christmas songs in December, or if a song like 'Running Up That Hill' genuinely becomes popular again. But I'm guessing the latter could be allowed for 10 weeks, which may explain 'Die For You' and 'Hell N Back' staying, and may also explain 'Sure Thing' as it shifts from #8 in the official chart to #1 in the catalogue chart. 'Dreams', 'In The Air', 'Cold Heart', 'Someone You Loved' and 'Shivers' are forced out as well. Ultimately it doesn't even change the bottom end of the chart that much but overall it sure looks fresher. Unrelated to all this, 'Kill Bill' returns to #1 for a 4th week, presumably due to the Doja Cat version.

The album chart sees a lot more change, with half of last week's top 40 not appearing this week. An exception was made for Linkin Park's Meteora for the 20th anniversary edition (reissues are allowed in the official chart for 10 weeks). There's also a new #1 album, 72 Seasons is Metallica's 7th #1 album in NZ. Their last release with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra peaked at #7 but their last proper studio release was a #1 too. NF surely sees a much lighter drop from #1 than he would have had otherwise. We'll see if these changes improve the chart (I'm certainly optimistic) and if other countries will follow their lead.

I also noticed with the album chart that they shifted off Foo Fighters' Essential collection and Ed Sheeran's "=", neither of which had hit 18 months yet (though Ed is *very* close). It's kind of an interesting look at just how many albums were affected by the original recurrency rules. Six60's EP went from #39 last week to #40 on the catalogue chart this week, implying that all along, the #40 album was really something like #80 at this point, and why so many of those long charting albums were kept standing by having a lower and lower threshold to clear laugh.gif

New #1! 'Daylight' is the fifth song to spend time at #1 in 2023, which is on par with this time last year, and obviously the first #1 for David Kushner. 'Miserable Man' previously peaked at #31 for him. The Weeknd only debuts at #11, but he at least halves the #22 peak of 'Sacrifice'. Speaking of which 'See You Again' enters at #22, clearly against the 18-month rule but assuming it'll be allowed for 10 weeks.

On the album chart, Tiesto gets his second charting album, his first being A Town Called Paradise, which peaked at #39 in 2014, so Drive easily surpasses that nearly a decade later. Everything But The Girl chart for the first time since 1999's Temperamental, which at #17 is still their highest-peaking NZ album to date. The Essential Foo Fighters returns so maybe that was an oversight last week, and Adele's 30 re-enters for maybe the last time since it'll reach 18 months old this month.
