BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Top 500 Countdown

Posted by: Dannyboy 2nd July 2016, 08:36 PM

Hi Guys

I've been working on this for a few years now, so I hope you enjoy it and find it interesting. Over the next few months I will be counting down the most successful singles / albums in UK chart history.

I've have went through each chart since the charts first began and allocated a point system, number 1 = 100 points and number 100 = 1, pretty simple really.

I'm pretty sure there will be errors especially regarding re-entries, re-releases and remixes but we shall see how it goes.

All interaction is appreciated also, what's your opinion on certain songs ? higher than you expected ? lower ?

I have countdowns for the -

Thanks guys, I love this site but sometimes there seems to be lots of polls and rates which is great because people interact but I like to see lots of facts and figures, hopefully these threads will see a lot of interaction also.

Posted by: JosephStyles 2nd July 2016, 08:50 PM

Wow that sounds like an almighty task you've taken on there! Really excited for this countdown though biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dannyboy 2nd July 2016, 08:52 PM

Tempted to start it now, wasn't expecting people to reply to be honest ha ha

Posted by: Mack 2nd July 2016, 08:56 PM

Yes go ahead with this. You've definitely given an almighty task in doing this. I'm very intrigued by this.

Number 500 - Lorde - Royals

Peak - 1
Points - 1839
Weeks in the top 10 - 4 weeks
Weeks in the top 100 - 34 weeks

Personal Option

If I'm honest I didn't really get this song and to be honest I still don't, its ok, I don't hate it but I'm generally surprised it only had 4 weeks in the top 10, for some reason it felt like it was around for ages.

What your opinion personal opinion on this song or its position in the countdown ?

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 2nd July 2016, 09:06 PM

Royals wub.gif Also shocked it only had 4 weeks in the top 10!

(I'm presuming this is UK Singles first?)

Posted by: JosephStyles 2nd July 2016, 09:07 PM

Oh I thought Royals spent longer in the top 10 too! I'm not massive on it myself, pretty much her entire album is better imo.

Oh yeah UK Singles, it would help if I said that at the start ha ha

Is this best selling or best rated by Buzzjack users?

Posted by: Colm 2nd July 2016, 09:13 PM

I never really got Royals either. I didn't like her voice and I didn't like the song.

Also - this is quite an undertaking. I will try and comment on as many as possible.

No this is nothing to do with sales or ratings, this is purely on a point system based on chart performance

Number 499 - Pat Boone - Friendly Persuasions

Peak - 3
Points - 1843
Weeks in the top 10 - 10 weeks
Weeks in the top 100 - 21 weeks

Personal Option

I have never heard this before but it seems harmless enough, its the kind of song I’m sure my grandparents would have loved. It was number 3 for 3 weeks, It was behind Guy Mitchell and Frankie Vaughan for all 3 weeks.

What your opinion personal opinion on this song or its position in the countdown ?

Posted by: danG 2nd July 2016, 09:28 PM

This looks really exciting!!!

'Royals' is fairly good, I forgot just how long a chart run it had actually (spent 17 weeks top 40) but it did feel very big at the time. Strange that nothing she's done since has made much of a chart impact as she had so much hype around her for a few months.

Lol at random 50s songs coming in already. Looking forward to how well Frankie Laine 'I Believe' does (with its eighteen weeks at #1). I also remember 'Rock Around The Clock' having a massive chart run too.

Posted by: gooddelta 2nd July 2016, 09:32 PM

Yasss Pat. Actually this should be really interesting as I'm pretty sure there are going to be tons of songs I've never listened to in here from before the mid 1970s at least, where my music knowledge gets very patchy.

I adore Lorde and Royals in general, it really stood out for me and I generally love the 'click' beat. I'd comfortably put it in my all time top 100 actually.

Yeah I agree I love the randomness of this countdown when all the 50s, 60s and 70s songs are mixed in with up to date songs.

Number 498 - Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding - I need your love

Weeks in the top 100 - 29 weeks

Not my favourite Calvin Harris song, I just cant get with Ellie Goulding and her voice, it just irritates me, the video is super cute though but why couldn't we have more Calvin with his top off ha ha

What your opinion personal opinion on this song or its position in the countdown ?

Posted by: danG 2nd July 2016, 10:05 PM

well I guess we don't look for the same things in Ellie Goulding.

I never loved 'Love Me Like You Do', though it's a solid 7/10 it's not something I go back to and she has many better songs in her discography.

-x-

you're thinking of Alice Deejay 'Better Off Alone', which is approx 1000 times better than 'Play Hard' - one of a few weak points in Guetta's career.

Posted by: BASTILLEmdh 2nd July 2016, 10:05 PM

Play Hard is great! I really liked it when it came out in 2013 and it to this day remains as one of David's best in my personal opinion.

Love this so far, Dannyboy wink.gif

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 2nd July 2016, 10:09 PM

Absolutely hate Play Hard though!

I'm currently listening to Queen Idina and looking forward to her surely popping up later heart.gif

Peak - 1

Weeks in the top 100 - 31 weeks

Terrible Top 10 run but it certainly did pick up and stick around for a while, its not one of favourite songs by them, I can take or leave it but probably more leave it, they have a lot better.

Excellent idea there, will be interesting to see what comes up.

Royals - It's ok but not really one I listen to much now, never really got Lorde either.
Friendly Persuasions - Not my kind of thing but probably good back in the day.
I Need Your Love - I love Ellie's voice and like I Need Your Love, personally I prefer their other collab Outside though.
Your Song - I love Elton John's original and nothing could come close in my opinion but I do think Ellie did a good job here.
Play Hard - I do like some of Guetta's songs but not a fan of this one. I do like the Alice Deejay original though!

I feel it was standard pop covers like that being successful that was the first hint she was turning into a mainstream hoe sad.gif Though Halcyon did come before that to at least prolong her interesting phase <3

Been AGES since the last long Dannyboy countdown, very excited to see this back *.* Will try and follow as much as possible, I wonder how high the likes of Frankie Laine/Wet Wet/Bryan Adams will be, I recall them having quite quick exits after their mammoth run at number 1 was up

Peak - 2
Points - 1857
Weeks in the top 10 - 10 weeks
Weeks in the top 100 - 23 weeks

Classic Madonna, love this song, then again there arent many most that I dont like or love by her. Number 2 on to different occasions and well deserved, should have been number 1 though.

Peak - 1
Points - 1860
Weeks in the top 10 - 14 weeks
Weeks in the top 100 - 20 weeks

Maybe its because I first heard this when John Alford sung it back in the 1990s but this version is just so slow and I prefer the more upbeat version.

I really like Runnin and think Beyoncé sounds good on it, unlike most of her own recent songs.
Leona's cover of Run is amongst my all time favourite covers, stunning.
Love Crazy For You, classic Madonna. I like almost all Madonna's done except for her last few albums.

I'm gonna go with #96 for Bleeding Love.

I kinda agree with the Madonna thing but songs like "Ghostown" remind me of how amazing she can be

Peak - 2
Points - 1864
Weeks in the top 10 - 7 weeks
Weeks in the top 100 - 30 weeks

Personal Option

How can anyone not love this bit of 80s cheese, the video itself is just so terrible you gotta love for how bad it is.

Peak - 1

Weeks in the top 10 - 10 weeks
Weeks in the top 100 - 26 weeks

Personal Option

Easily one of the biggest group of the 90s in America, not so much over here but this certainly is a classic ballad of that era, I remember the video being cheesy even back then, great song though. The “talking” bit always made be laugh to.

What a great countdown! Thanks so much biggrin.gifD

Royals - Love it or hate it, it's fair to say that it is now considered as a modern classic
Your Song - Never got in to it (The Ellie version that is)
I need your love - It was within my personal Top 20 of that year
Play Hard - Awful cover
Smoke gets in your eyes - Classic 10/10
Crazy for you - Amazing, song still gives me goosebumps
Run - A rare situation when an already great song, is covered and the result is even greater. When I think of the best covers, this always comes to my mind
So Macho - Serves is purpose, good pop song
Running - Great production, I feel it deserved to be bigger than it was

Posted by: danG 3rd July 2016, 09:30 AM

I'm really not a fan of 'End Of The Road', glad I wasn't around at the time as I imagine it would've really got annoying from being everywhere and having a massively long top 40 run for its time.

Lol at 'So Macho' being here. I've just looked up its chart run and it appears it spent a lot of time under the top 40 before smashing, must've got a re-release at some point.

Guess I'm a bit late...

Royals is a decent song
The Pat Boone song sounds alright
I Need Your Love is very average for me
Your Song – nah
Play Hard is a great tune
Drag me Down got in? puke.gif I thought when it dropped from 1 to 8 in one week that would be the end of it
Runnin’ didn’t do anything for me
Not crazy for Crazy for You
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes sounds OK
Run is quite good
So Macho is great!
Not sure about End of the Road
Troublemaker is alright but Olly annoys me, especially after last year’s X Factor
Billionaire is average
California Gurls is dreadful
Beautiful sounds like every pop song
Same for Right Now
I’ll Never Find Another You is alright I guess
Dislike Blank Space with a passion
Changing is great music.gif
Young at Heart sounds fun biggrin.gif
There isn’t much Rock & Roll in that Waltz
Ayo is a crime against music
Return of the Mack should be higher
The Wombles? Seriously?
A bit of Dean Martin is always good
The very fact that I remember Payphone means that it was stupidly overplayed
Wannabe is quite good

Looking forward to the rest!

I'm pleased you're enjoying it and I totally agree, there are a lot of young members on here so the focus is generally only on songs released within the last 5-10 years so its good to see older songs being recognised for how big they were back in their day.

And yes when I was compiling it I was amazed by how many songs I had never heard before were so high and songs which I assumed would do well actually appear quite low.

Wow at Wannabe and I Want to Hold Your Hand being that low and below Martin Solveig's Hello amongst others (tune <3) ohmy.gif Not entirely surprising cos of the generally shorter chart runs back then, but still you wouldn't think two iconic songs would be this low!

I love Hello

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 3rd July 2016, 05:25 PM

I feel really bad for never taking the time to listen to this song in full

Posted by: Iz~ 3rd July 2016, 05:26 PM

This is a great countdown so far - especially one of its size, kudos for that.

Wannabe in is pleasing to see, I guess several of the big hits of the turn of the century won't make an appearance or be that low because of the faster charts around then, I'll hope to see as many as possible in anyway.

Posted by: Dannyboy 3rd July 2016, 05:39 PM

I agree that sadly a lot of classic tracks wont make an appearance of if they do, it will be very low but that's the nature of the charts I suppose.

Songs in the 50s/60s are penalised due to the chart not being Top 100 but they also have the advantage due to the chart being smaller, long runs gets a lot more of the higher points.

Songs in the 70s/80s benefited due to a lot of songs climbing the charts back then

Songs in the late 90s saw high sales but a shorter chart run

Songs in the 2000 saw a huge downturn in chart runs and sales so they are probably the worse effected

Its only really the 2010s where a lot of songs had long chart runs.

Posted by: danG 3rd July 2016, 05:45 PM

so great to see Martin Solveig's 'Hello' get in this rundown, it was very unlucky to miss the top 10 but I guess that's what happens to chart growers

YNWA is great for obvious reasons even though I don't support Celtic or Liverpool. Roy Orbison! I had a convo about him yesterday with my dad, apparently he loved Faggots which are a local food staple near me.

You should receive some kind of recognition for this effort, I think Buzzjack do awards for the best contributor, and right now for me that has to be you! biggrin.gif

Also, when you reach 450 or 400 (whichever you choose) can you do a countdown post of the last 50/100 songs you posted so I can see them all on one page so to speak. Only if you have time of course.

Well done on your psychic powers there laugh.gif

'Give It To Me' hasn't aged terribly but is nowhere near the best for any artist involved. Definitely a hit based on name power alone though I doubt I realized that at the time. A Nelly Furtado comeback is way overdue!

I love it. It's an average Timbaland production but that means that it was way above everything else at the time.

I stand by that as I do think the star power certainly helped it to the top, and even to get airplay, as it was way too subtle for some unknown act (or probably even Timbaland feat unknown guest vocalist) to take to #1. I just don't think it'd have even got off the ground in terms of radio and TV support in the first place.

That said, I've always loved it, http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=35841 and in my top 10 of 2007, so that has never changed.

Posted by: awardinary 11th July 2016, 09:42 PM

I've just caught up with the thread since you're amendments.

Rudimental and Ed Sheeran combined twice last year, so I assume that Bloodstream is slightly higher.

Whatever happened with Atomic Kitten?

Labrinth & Emeli Sande's duet has to be one of my favourite duets of all time. Just brilliant British vocals.

The Saturdays deserve to feature too with Up which was one of their greatest hits. Are they due a comeback soon?

Definitely want to see more from Timbaland an Nelly Furtado in the charts currently.

Next please! happy.gif

It's weird seeing 679, a track I don't think I even knew existed, appear in a top 500 of all time. Missing however is sublime and I'm pleased to see it make the countdown wub.gif

I get what you are saying, but then there would singles that may have more weeks in the Top 10 ( charity singles ) that would be higher than songs that spent longer in the Top 20 and the chart overall and that wouldn't represent what was more popular, just what was popular over a few weeks.

Clearly "Cold Water" was a nod from Bieber towards chart longevity legend Frankie Laine.

Hilltoppers "Only You" had a really weird chart run, it climbed incredibly slowly to eventually reach its peak of 3 in its 16th week, then plummeted the following week to 12 and stabilised for a couple of months..

A bit like Jade's 1993 hit "Don't Walk Away" which went 36-20-11-9-8-{7}-13-51, though I assume that drop was because of a deletion?

Yeah I didn't realise that, I why it dropped so much considering the chart run overall was very static

I'm also quite shocked to see Nickelback racked up 42 weeks for "How You Remind Me" though it was inescapable in 2002, much like another record they made that is bound to be very high up here and peaked at #2 in 2008!

PS - Thanks for continuing to post these, I am always reading if not commenting and I'm sure that is true for others. : )

I think downloads help it sporadically over the years and yeah I know people view it, over 10k already which is great, I just lost motivation to post when it was just me, I kinda hoped it would spark debate but I was wrong ha ha, I suppose if its 5 per post then there is more to comment on.

I think 5 at a time is much better.

However, constructive feedback, I would say change the thread title to something a bit clearer, I didn't really realise what this was, just caught up and love it.

Congratulations, this must have taken you ages!
