End-of-decade stuff is all in vogue right now, but since BJSC only ran for the tail end of the noughties, I thought I'd extend it a little to count down my top 500 BJSC entries. Excluding all the ones I sent myself because that would clog it up a little.

I never looked at how I actually voted for each contest but did look at last.fm listens, so if I gave an 18 to a track but it's mysteriously absent from here then I must have forgotten about it after the contest, mb.

Oh and we're not exactly counting down, except for the top 25 or so, because that would take forever. Quantity of content > words and presentation. All I have done is highlight the most undeservedly forgotten/underrated track from each cohort that I had great fun resdiscovering. So here is the first half of these, in one fell swoop:

I like a good list like this! You've gone a bit retro with my country's choices but I approve, they're all (NOCEREMONY aside) very underrated, Colours in the Sky and Melba's Call especially <3

I will dig through this list more beyond just picking out my own entries at some point xx but I'm really happy to see 'Break A Mirrored Leg' and 'The Return' making an appearance here so far out of the Persephonia catalogue's deeper cuts, two entries of mine that I think deserved better (but at the same time I would have expected them to do worse probably, especially the former). 'Dark Star' and 'EMPIRE' also both remain among my faves of my entries ofc. And hooray for the other two songs I've got on here so far too ~~

Cake is ridiculous and I can confirm that Jupiter 4 is still to come but there could still be other higher Aeroche entries.


VHS Glitch, as well as another entry of yours still to come, went straight onto my witch-adjacent playlist as soon as I rediscovered them. <3


Similar tracks to Mirror Me in the future would not go unappreciated!


This isn't a decade countdown tho, this is all-time.

It will definitely be 2013-2014 heavy as that's when I was paying most attention and when BJSC taste aligned most with mine. Your most underrated and much more recent entry still to come though. <3

I must admit that I hadn't listened to and had completely forgotten about The Return in particular, but it had a decent 15 last.fm listens so I had to have it in there. More Eggabac-Persephonia spanning an entire decade to come. x


Séyetana's best ranked entry was ages ago but it was THE BIGGEST INJUSTICE. I wouldn't be surprised if I remember it more than you do.

Your first sentence can only be interpreted as trying to make me feel old. It was only at the very start of BJSC I was still in middle school, which we finish in Staffordshire (rare in the rest of Britain!) aged 13.


Roosevelt, Spoon and Roosevelt I all penalised slightly because I already knew them, but the other two were amazing discoveries.


THERE ARE. Probably a disproportionate amount of PRoJ and to the detriment of others eeek.

So just three years, 2009 + 2013 + 2014, account for nearly half of all the tracks. I can justify it as everything was new and shiny for me in 2009 and 2012-2014 was when indie music was at its most dominant here. We also have a bit of recency bias, with lots of 2019 tracks despite it not being that much better compared to previous years, but I'll allow it.

50. Keep Shelly In Athens - Oostende { Kylienips LX // 20} 2013



In 2015 I went to Oostende on my own, during a very melancholy period of my life, and listened to this song on the beach. Idk if it just reflected my mood at the time but I find the Belgian coast rather depressing. The track is about a long distance relationship where Oostende is the midpoint and if I remember rightly, using that one perspective of the video is shot in Ireland, then the other half of the couple must be from Northern Bavaria.

2018 was not a year in which I was paying attention in BJSC as this is the second highest entry from that year. But this ditty went readily onto my playlists and I'm glad Georgia has found a moderate amount of success since!

A second Vülkyria track in a row whose sound could only really come from the years 2011-2015 and takes me right back to my first and second year of uni. It was tracks like this where my pals started entrusting me with music choice at pres before making our weekly pilgrimage to Killer Kitsch at Glasgow's Buff Club lmao. I didn't even compete in this contest but I've gotta put this somewhere!!! What an ARRESTING track from an artist who has become one of my favourites in recent years. The DNQ just goes to show how trash early BJSC was.

I had completely forgotten about this track until I was looking through my last.fm for forgotten tracks to add to this list. I feel like everyone else has forgotten this band this too?? A stunning track!

Big fan of This Woman's Work and Settle Down! Shame the latter is not on Spotify Georgia is also a good one but I think I found it through Radio 1 rather than BJSC. Also I agree Belgium's coast/majority of Belgium is pretty drab!

Lots of tracks in this 41-50 section that evoke strong memories, which is fab!!

45. Gang Gang Dance - MindKilla { Fljótavík Masquerade I // 13} 2017



The highest Fljótavík entry that would now be eclipsed by De Grandi's Paris Nord-Est (the only 2020 track so far that would be in the top 50). This whole album is a whirlwind of a listen and I was over the moon when this was chosen in Masquerade!

44. Alice Merton - No Roots { St. Burbia XCI // 6} 2017



In 2018 I distinctly remember dancing to this song in a Paris gay club with THE GUY SHARING MY HOSTEL BUNK BED (he was on top x) and he was wearing shorts that showed off his very nice legs. Later we kissed and spent the weekend together but I don't think he fully returned the feelings rip.

43. Route 94 - My Love (feat. Jess Glynne) { Mdiče LIX // 20} 2013



Oh my GOD. Similar to the Vülkyria track, this is v. first year of uni and Jess Glynne has been on a precipitous decline since then. I think I still have the MP3 of Skream's live recording of his DJ set in SubClub where you can hear my friend Lucy screaming at the beginning of this track, which is entirely understandable as it's a tune.

42. Shlohmo - Bo Peep (Do U Right) (feat. Jeremih) { Elëdan LIII // 13} 2013



Experience has taught me that this is borderline awkward to listen to with company but it's a tune and I wish hip hop could do this well in 2020.

41. Los Campesinos! - Ways To Make It Through The Wall { Utopia XV // 22} 2009



Gosh where do I even start with this band?! My most listened on last.fm and their first three albums were SO MUCH FUN. I still maintain that their lyrics are poetry.

I loved Los Campesinos! early stuff, I sort of ignored them for at least half a decade but listened to them a lot more since their last album.

Two of this set are from Aeroche, including their exquisite debut, and four are from the early 10s - very representative as these two categories manage to dominate the countdown overall. I don't remember Young Galaxy doing quite so well with their incredibly wholesome 'Fall For You' as they feel overlooked, and similarly, I knew Kiddy Smile was underrated but I didn't realise such an iconic entry (and video! It's one of the best videos on here!) was an outright flop. On the other hand, iamamiwhoami's win is entirely appropriate as in 2012 we were very much at peak hipster smoothie.
