Just announced on The One Show tonight, a brand new original Christmas single from Emma is out next Friday.

Posted by: Jade 5th November 2019, 07:32 PM

The clip sounded nice on The One Show! Looking forward to it.

I know, it sounds gorgeous! One for my festive playlists this year I think dance.gif

I hope it is good .

At least it is an original and not Chris Rea .

'Coming Home For Christmas' sounds gorgeous!

Was really hoping for it to be upbeat. Her voice will be gorgeous and I'm sure suit a Christmas song but yeah something like One more sleep would have been preferred.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 5th November 2019, 09:09 PM

Sounds like a pretty song based on the clip, hopefully the full thing is great!

Me too.

Is it this song:

Emma, covering a 15 year old song.

Posted by: sammy01 5th November 2019, 09:52 PM

She said it is an original song.

Mmhm, "original song" is a very loose term these days.

Posted by: sammy01 5th November 2019, 10:35 PM

I'm just saying what she said, there is a clip of it, it is a ballad. The chorus is coming home for Christmas repeated.

Posted by: tommie 5th November 2019, 10:42 PM

Well, are we sure it's not that obscure song I posted?

Posted by: Blond 2.0 5th November 2019, 11:05 PM

Sounds lovely and I'm glad it's original and not a cover

Posted by: masahiro 6th November 2019, 12:44 AM

do you think this is one off single?
or My Happy Place Christmas reissue is coming?

so glad we have 2 spice songs for 2 weeks in a row!

Posted by: Mr.X 6th November 2019, 10:02 AM

It's a bit strange that she has announced it on live TV but there's no info on her social media/websites tbh. I would think she will just be releasing a single, with possible an EP or re-edition of My Happy Place, but after this year in Spice World, I guess you never know hey

x

Posted by: sammy01 6th November 2019, 10:45 AM

I'm guessing as it isn't out for 9 days, next week her social media will start to push it.

Posted by: Mr.X 14th November 2019, 02:01 PM

So the song is now out in New Zealand and release includes a cover version of Santa Baby

You can hear snippets here: https://music.apple.com/nz/album/coming-home-for-christmas-single/1486940736

Seems like there is no video or cd release. Hope she does some campaigning for it though...

Nice to have two tracks! Santa Baby is a great choice for her.

Emma's version to poach streams from Kylie this year and become a top 40 hit? cool2.gif (Lol)

ah tbh she does seem to be going for that Low Budget Kylie crown this Christmas, what with a Xmas single and a gig at the Albert Hall pirate.gif

Lets hope this gets included in various playlists on Spotify/Apple Music and Tidal, otherwise it will sink into nothingness straight away as there is no buzz whatsoever for it anywhere lol

Posted by: sammy01 14th November 2019, 02:53 PM

From that clip the lyrics are so incredibly on the nose, they have gone for any Christmas words that rhyme.

Santa baby sounds like a completely paint by numbers copy of Kylie.

Posted by: JaneJ 14th November 2019, 07:47 PM

I like Coming Home for Christmas, lovely. wub.gif

To be fair - Madonna and Kylie's versions of Santa Baby are nothing alike. Madonna's leans more into the comedy side if anything with those chipmunk vocals.

Posted by: sammy01 14th November 2019, 08:16 PM

Yeah I meant Emma sings it is a bit if a flirty/cheeky way that Kylie does.

Posted by: sammy01 15th November 2019, 12:16 AM

Coming home for Christmas is a cute song, a decent effort. The last chorus is utterly overkill though church bells, triangles, sleigh bells, any sense of actual rhythm gets lost on the last chorus. It is a 7 out of 10, 8 had the last chorus not been so messy.

Santa baby is pretty pointless, it is a kylie copy.

Posted by: Mr.X 15th November 2019, 12:18 AM

Coming Home For Christmas is ok. I quite like the business of the last chorus tbh. My main issue is with some of the lyrics in the verses. But overall, it's not bad at all, I was expecting much worse ah Santa Baby is just tacky ah, and a bit creepy ohmy.gif

Nice to have some new Bunton tracks though, specially a new original one!

Posted by: dachiki 15th November 2019, 01:11 AM

I don't really like Christmas songs except Christmas mariah songs

Posted by: vibe 15th November 2019, 07:14 AM

Just listened and Emma seems to be singing in her lower register which isn’t her strength .

I think I prefer Santa Baby.

So now I have Madonna’s and Emma’s version .

There's only so many ways to do Santa Baby without reverting to something really drastic ie Almighty Sleighbell Remix.

I'm not really sure Santa Baby is a good song from the perspective that Kylie's version seems to have really taken over as the version people listen to/stream besides Eartha's version. I don't think people will necessarily seek Emma's out, so I think they could've chosen a famous Christmas song that doesn't really have any version that gets too dominant streaming.

Posted by: sammy01 15th November 2019, 08:30 AM

Michael Buble has a very different take and version on Santa Baby, it can be done.

I haven't heard his version but I assume it's some form of big band version of it?

Yeah, of course, Emma could've done something with a full orchestra, but to be real here - this was likely produced on the cheap side. As I said, I would've gone for a famous song that might not have a hugely dominant version that's available on streaming. I assume the reason they included Santa Baby in this was just for that reason - to attempt to lure people who stream into checking out her Christmas track, but her Santa Baby will just get drowned out by Kylie's version and Eartha's original.

Posted by: vibe 15th November 2019, 11:26 AM

Its a shame these christmas songs sound like they have been recorded in their shed in the garden.

Posted by: sammy01 15th November 2019, 02:55 PM

I agree about the production, My happy place could have had much better production too.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 15th November 2019, 03:11 PM

Ugh. Keep it.

Posted by: Mr.X 15th November 2019, 10:30 PM

Her streaming numbers are TERRIBLE!

Youtube: 3,500
Spotify: less than 1000

ohmy.gif

There has been no press campaign for this song at all either... I'm filing this under 'bonus for the fans' tongue.gif

Posted by: sammy01 15th November 2019, 10:42 PM

It is just to help her promote the Albert Hall gig and it is only mid November. I cant imagine anyone rushing to listen to it right now, even her fans till December.

I'm sure she has done over 1k streams on Spotify but it wont update till tomorrow.

Posted by: Mr.X 15th November 2019, 11:03 PM

It usually updates regularly during the day. Genuinely feel that it's just not done over 1000 streams lol

But yes clearly it is just for promo for Albert Hall gig. Hope she has some promo lined up though. Her tweet about it mentioned she will sing it live for the first time at the concert so don't expect any performances of the song until then.

Let's hope it gets added to a few Christmas playlists come December, that is genuinely the only way she will get noticed at all.

Posted by: Mr.X 16th November 2019, 10:13 AM

I STAND CORRECTED!

It has now been updated for 2930 streams on Spotify sleep.gif

$ucce$$

But yeah the song is cute but I'm not rushing to listen to it in mid November.

Posted by: Mr.X 16th November 2019, 11:55 AM

Realistically, what are the chances of her doing Radio and TV performances for this song?

TV she could have:

- Strictly Come Dancing
- Jonathan Ross
- Loose Women
- Good Morning Britain (do they still do performances?)
- Graham Norton (probably never for a solo spice ah)

And I am sure there will be plenty of Christmas specials she could perform at, no?

Posted by: Spiceboy 16th November 2019, 12:09 PM

It's a sweet enough song simple and inoffensive. However her voice sounds utterly dreadful on the verses, why on earth is she singing in that low register also is she singing down her nose?

Posted by: Spiceboy 16th November 2019, 12:12 PM

Listening to Santa Baby now, her voice sounds much more pleasant on this one suits her a lot more.

I think it'll depend on if they really plan to push this track or not.

If it's just released to promote her Albert Hall gig, then I assume any sort of extensive tv or radio promotion is out. With it being released under BMG I guess there's a chance they'll do more with it though.

Would be wonderful if they could get a few of these slots! Strictly has some complete random performances so she could possibly get a slot on there if BMG were willing to pay out for it. Can't see any solo Spice getting a Graham Norton slot ever again though tbh... cry.gif (shame as he is so much better than Ross)

Posted by: sammy01 16th November 2019, 01:21 PM

I think she is more likely to go on shows and have a sit down chat as promo.

I don't even listen to AIWFC, December is the only month Christmas music is played for me... I did give both of these one listen though. Think I'll be replacing Kylie's version of Santa Baby with Emma's as I prefer her voice. I don't really like Emma's vocals on the verses in the original song though she sounds weird.

Interestingly Santa Baby is proving ever so slightly more popular on Spotify than Coming Home for Christmas:

10,376 streams - Santa Baby
9,253 streams - Coming Home for Christmas

Posted by: tommie 21st November 2019, 07:51 PM

I don't think it's that shocking since Santa Baby is a well-known song to begin with.

At the end of the day, it'll all depend on if Coming Home For Christmas can get on some good Christmas playlists and get proper radio play.

Posted by: sammy01 21st November 2019, 11:09 PM

I noticed she was promoting the Albert Hall gig with Santa baby on social media today. I guess both will get a push and the label will hope one or the other gets playlisting or radio play.

Posted by: Spice Girls Net 21st November 2019, 11:23 PM

Emma will be appearing on 'Michael McIntyre's Big Show' on BBC One on Saturday 30th November from 8.10pm to play 'Send To All'.

Eek, such low numbers currently. Let's pray these actually get some playlist treatment at some point...

Posted by: sammy01 22nd November 2019, 07:44 PM

I just cant listen to Christmas music in November, I'll give it some streams in December.

I'm guessing the budget gone into both songs amounts to cheap studio time and that's about it. Neither songs will get a video or anymore money spent on them so I guess they arent looking at losing money on them. On the off chance one takes off or gets good playlisting then bonus.

Posted by: vibe 22nd November 2019, 08:00 PM

Is High Heels streaming’s better ?

Posted by: Jay ☆ 22nd November 2019, 08:45 PM

It is! 216,920 streams for that. I mean in terms of Spotify that's not fantastic for 16 days of availability, but it's decent for Melanie C.

Posted by: Big Boobs Vjay! 22nd November 2019, 10:36 PM

Emma B having the best original Xmas song so far of 2019 though drama.gif

Posted by: Mr.X 22nd November 2019, 10:50 PM

True. Certainly better than that Little Mix new song, which is just boring. But I still think that a nice short bridge would have helped Emma's song a bit more (as well as *some* resemblence of promo ah)

Posted by: sammy01 22nd November 2019, 11:30 PM

Certainly wouldn't hurt her doing some radio promo for the song and Albert Hall gig. Though I guess it is probably still a little early for that if she is looking to get a Christmas song playlisted on radio 2 or the likes of.

If I was BMG that would be the main goal radio 2 playlisting and hope it takes off from there.

Santa Baby has climbed to 5th in her most popular list, while Coming Home For Christmas is currently 7th.

Those streaming numbers tho ohmy.gif

Posted by: sammy01 30th November 2019, 06:27 PM

I mean I know in the grand scheme of streaming those numbers aren't good but when you think Emma has had 44k listens of Christmas songs before it is actually December it isn't that bad.

I'm sure flogging the remaining tickets and any extra My happy place album sales matter much more.

Streaming numbers are not gonna get better for old acts like her unless you're constantly active or immortal like Queen, The Beatles, etc.

So I do get it that Emma is doing quite a bit of PR at the moment, which is great.

Although I have been thinking about it and I want to ask a question: is everyone here happy with how her PR is going? Honestly, I think some of it is great of course. She got features in Attitude, interviews on BBC Radio, BBC One Show, etc.

But I cant quite shake the feeling that she is mainly being presented as a celebrity, rather than a singer. As in, yes she does talk about the Spice Girls and her album, and her RAH gig in those interviews. But I kind of hoped she was going more towards better - more music focused publications. I know there arent that many available, but she could do some more left-field stuff. Look at Mel C, she is getting some great press with great profiles in the Guardian, etc.

Emma has the chops to be a really credible pop star. She should focus on that rather than on being this Disney princess/celebrity. Interviews, even online ones where they focus more in depth on her music and how she writes, etc, would be much more interesting.

Don't get me wrong, I love her and I am glad she is still doing music. But I think she could do much better if she actually focused on her music rather than being a celebrity mainly.

Let's hope after the RAH she does refocus that, does another album and more live gigs. Her friends do it all the time, she could do much more too!! Will Young has been touring loads, has performed his Christmas single on various places already (not just TV), etc.

Come onnnnnn Bunton wub.gif

Posted by: sammy01 2nd December 2019, 09:06 PM

I just think she needs to get some performance slots to show people she has that angel like voice. Easier said than done though, as performance slots are hard to come by and I'm sure BMG don't have huge bargaining power with getting her slots.

She could defo do more radio performances and I'd like to see her go down that Avenue more. Even after the Albert Hall gig she could go to radio stations and sing coming home for Christmas and chat about how amazing doing a solo gig was.

Everyone nominate Santa Baby and Emma and Mel C's Sleigh Ride in the lounge christmas songs competition right here on buzzjack!!

Posted by: sammy01 4th December 2019, 08:40 AM

The playlist Emma's Santa Baby is on on Spotify 'New music holiday' has grown a lot. When I first saw it the playlist had 30k likes it has 51.3k likes now. As we get closer to Christmas it should continue to grow and probably explains why Santa Baby is doing better on Spotify and might take off even more as we get closer to Christmas.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 4th December 2019, 08:48 AM

A pity that both songs aren't on that playlist!

22,024 - Coming Home For Christmas (+1,585)
42,203 - Santa Baby (+6,087)

We love it when you provide stats to demonstrate what I mean. Hopefully by this weekend Santa baby is doing 10k+ a day. At this rate she would be wise pushing Santa Baby after her Royal Albert gig, singing it on radio and getting TV bookings to promote it if she can as she could gain some traction with it. It would help it in the next few years then being added to xmas playlists.

Bunton needs to call the CEO of Spotify URGENTLY and make said CEO playlist her songs on the Christmas lists!!

She has the third biggest new Xmas song so far after Ellie and Mabel!!

Emma Bunton - COming Home For Christmas - 23,000

Emma's song isnt being played on the radio either, not added to any new playlists.... I don't know what else to tell you ah. The only way you can say that is if the song does indeed start to get picked up after this week.

Posted by: December Dong 4th December 2019, 03:19 PM

They're not even in the top400 on spotify, so we can safely say Emma B has won this one x

Posted by: sammy01 4th December 2019, 04:59 PM

The New holiday music playlist Emma has somehow scammed Santa Baby on is gaining likes fast. it has gained 900 likes in 8 hours. She could have somehow ended up on what becomes a fairly big playlist. Streams and likes for the playlist will only keep increasing as Christmas gets nearer.

Posted by: Babyboy 10th December 2019, 01:44 PM

Physical copies are available on Emma store. Just 500 copies.. hurry up.

Lucky you indeed and well done. I only saw the email like 1h after I got it and when I tried to get it, it was already sold out :/ Apparently Chris is trying to get more done. Let's hope this isn't a Free Me Vinyl situation (only 500 printed, which now go for like £900 on ebay!)...

Posted by: Mr.X 10th December 2019, 10:03 PM

Apparently it sold out in less than 1hour, which is a bit wild considering there was no promo or info out on it other than the Spice Circle and the email sign up.

Posted by: sammy01 10th December 2019, 10:30 PM

There are still a lot of fans on spice circle and here etc who didn't manage to get a copy. Another 500 would sell put pretty quickly I'd think.

I’m kind of surprised that none of the labels the solo Spice Girls were associated with have considered printing solo albums on vinyl. There’s certainly a market for them, particularly the fan favourites like Free Me... it really deserves a reissue! sad.gif

It's probably to do with the fact that none of them are associated with the labels anymore. I do agree that if Emma was to do a Free Me vinyl re-issue with Universal, of say 2000 copies, it would sell out... Just that it might not be so cost effective specially for an act that they don't work with anymore...

I dont think Virgin/EMI would ever bother with a Northern Star, A Girl LIke Me, Schizophonic, Hot or VB vinyl to be honest, specially as each girl left the record company as solo artists not in the most amicable of terms ah

Exactly. The reason why record labels re-print albums on vinyl isn't because of the very marginal profit it generates - it's because it's good promo for the artists backcatalog which makes them turn further profit beyond the vinyl printing. Emma really generates no profit as it is on her solo catalog and a Free Me vinyl wouldn't turn that around.

Posted by: Mr.X 11th December 2019, 05:56 PM

Yeah true. Having said that, if they were to sell them just via a limited edition/online only via Emma's store, it would probably still sell out and reduce costs/make some cash but probably not seen as 'worth' spending time on..

Gosh, I really hate capitalism precisely for this reason lol

Posted by: vibe 11th December 2019, 08:06 PM

Changing the cover will make the collectors also want the new item. These will be all over eBay . Luckily I only collect Melanie C items

Posted by: Jay ☆ 11th December 2019, 08:10 PM

I'm not too happy about the new artwork. sad.gif It's now a picture of her on stage at the Royal Albert Hall, rather than the original with the Coming Home for Christmas single image. That goes for the 500 copies sold yesterday (which had the original artwork showing when it was on sale), and the 500 sold today.

I feel like this change has turned it into quite a random looking product. After all, it's no longer the same as what was sold at the venue... and that's what most fans wanted surely, a replica of what was sold there on the night. With the new image, it's now lost the visual association with it being a Coming Home for Christmas CD. It now gives the appearance of being a Live CD actually, rather than a CHFC CD single that doubled up as a program sold at the Royal Albert Hall. Also, the fact that this new version was obviously never sold at the Royal Albert Hall in this form, yet it's being sold as if it was the tour programme... which would be impossible, because the picture is from the night of the event... I don't know, I just find that to be a bit odd!

In my opinion it's also a little iffy that the first 500 copies were sold with the original artwork depicted, and then a day after they were sold, they suddenly reveal that those 500 actually have different artwork. To me it means those sales were achieved in a misrepresented way.

Apparently the artwork had to be redesigned because of rights issues (which seems strange to me, why would BMG have issues with their own artwork?). It makes me wish that they'd just abandoned the association with The Royal Albert Hall for this new product and just had a cover that represents what the item really is - a CD single of Coming Home for Christmas and Santa Baby.

Ahh, I know I shouldn't over think it. I am happy we have a CD single. But I'll find it hard to shake off the niggling feeling that I would have much preferred the original version, and it's incredibly annoying that there's only 96 copies of that version in existence. If any of those are sold, they'll be gold dust. I know I'll never own one. I'll always find the decision to print just 96 to be incredibly bizarre... like, why? Why not cater to demand with that version? Argh!!

I do appreciate the effort from her team, but this is messier than it should have been. If there'd been 1000 copies of the original version, I think everyone would have been really happy with that.

Rant over... blush.gif

Agree with every word Jay.

Posted by: Mr.X 11th December 2019, 08:50 PM

Yeah the change of artwork was MESSY! Im not too fussed as it was never a cd single in the first place, and it looks like it will now just be more of a celebration of the Royal Albert Hall gig instead, like a programme with a CD with it, but also some pictures from the evening.

Personally I dont mind it, though I can see why some fans might not be super happy ah.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 11th December 2019, 09:47 PM

I wonder if some of the people buying this item will actually expect it to include recordings from the Royal Albert Hall? The description of it in the listing is kind of vague and potentially misleading...

I mean sure, it states the two tracks included at the end, but it doesn't implicitly state that they're actually studio recordings.

Posted by: Mr.X 11th December 2019, 09:50 PM

Yeah agree it is a bit weird. I understand they wanted it to be more of a gift about the RAH attendance/show. But they should have just framed it as a CD AND then did a booklet or programme about the show itself. Both would sell out around 2000 copies easily ah

If successful they can be invited back the next year, like Kylie was. It is evident that is what Emma is pushing for, all her social media posts are 'let's make it an annual thing' 'would love to do it again' etc. Ultimately it is down to the Royal Albert Hall but I'm sure Emma would do it in a heartbeat.

A full xmas album release would certainly help her prospects for next year.

Oh don't get me wrong I'd much rather an original album over another covers one any day... she is a bit lazy though so I can see her going for minimum effort again laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I would have liked her to have released a Christmas album to tie in with the Gig, even if just on her website at the time. She clearly recorded the tracks for backing vocals so she could easily have just whacked them onto an album and called it "My Happy Christmas" to tie in with the Happy Place era. wub.gif

I think it came when she went on holiday right in the middle of the Free Me album launch week or something like that lol she actually does hussle quite a bit, but she did do some questionable choices.

Also the Life in Mono promo was non existent besides her being on Strictly and then after Christmas was done (and the album flopping), she went on a really shit promo week for her next single and called it a day.

But she has also admited to be a bit lazy herself lol

Emma has created a Spotify playlists of 20 Christmas songs, which includes her 2, 3 spice girls and 15 other classics.

Cute. I noticed her monthly listeners went up to over 200,000 for the first time since last year so maybe the Christmas songs are being taken up on the lead up to Christmas. I really hope she would get better playlisted with her two songs tbh.

Just seen Emma’s story and was going to post it on here.

Nice that she’s included 2B1, Goodbye, Christmas Wrapping and Coming Home For Christmas.

Hopefully with over 1 million followers on Instagram let’s hope the songs get some streams

Santa Baby has shoot up her Top 10 on Spotify to get to #4

Is it in any playlists at all? I dont know how to search for that...

Anyway, would be good if Bunton has a regular Christmas pick me up but knowing our luck, it will never happen mellow.gif

Between Eartha and Kylie's version of Santa Baby I don't see Emma's version getting much spins. I assume she just have very low streaming numbers for it to sneak up to #4.

Posted by: sammy01 4th December 2020, 10:45 AM

It was a good idea to chuck those 2 Christmas songs out last year. Her Spotify listeners is creeping up as we get closer to Christmas. They probably cost £5 to make too with no videos.

BMG are probably laughing any way it is those 2 xmas songs that were on the £10 a pop Royal Albert Hall single that ended up selling 1.1k copies.

laugh.gif I seriously doubt BMG is doing much about it at all... It never got playlisted last year which was a shame, and I seriously doubt it will this year too...

Emma's streaming numbers just arent good enough. She has 200,000 regular listeners which is so bad for a recording artist of her stature. Like, I get it she is no Kylie, but maybe if she had done a different song that someone like Kylie wasnt so popular with, maybe it would have picked up much more... Plus, she sounds awful in it. I know she plays the whole sweet innocent Baby Spice in these records, but it's a bit toooooo much like a baby, imo...

I could image her doing a version of Oh Santa or the I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday. That would be at least a bit more fun.

ANYWAY!

I don't like either her version of Santa Baby or Coming home for Christmas, however I did like a lot of her covers during her Royal Albert Hall concert and did wonder why she decided on Santa Baby when Kylie clearly has the monopoly on the modern version of that song. Winter Wonderland sounded lovely by her and there are no popular modern takes on it, maybe that could have been picked up more as a well known song but not fighting against the likes of Kylie or Michael Buble (as I also adored her version of Santa Clause is coming to town).

I'd actually totally be here for that. I think she has the perfect voice for a lot of Christmas songs really sweet and melodic. She should do a Phil Spector style Christmas album with the old classics that would really suit her and hark back to her Free Me / Life in Mono 60's style. Couple it with another show at the Royal Alert Hall I'll be eating it out of the palm of her hands wub.gif 'My Happy Christmas' wub.gif

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the plan if My Happy Place had been more successful - re-release with a second cd of Christmas songs. It wouldn't surprise me if Coming Home For Christmas and Santa Baby were left-overs from that idea.

This. Santa Baby was clearly her attempting to cash in on the whole 'Im Baby Spice so I will record this song with Baby in the title' which by now is a bit too tired a concept after she played with it a bit too on Baby Please Dont Stop and Dont Call Me Baby blink.gif

It is a bit lame she recorded that one when there are so many other songs out there she could have done a nice take on.

Unfortunately, I dont think it will do much without playlist and radio support, which I asume is having close to none. That playlist has only like 7000 likes in it, so it will hardly generate any sufficient streams.

Last night, I was reading this article on how writers of music are getting paid really badly for streams and thought of this. Like, some writers on Kylie's latest #1 album Disco got paid just £200 as the streams income is so poor, and that is a dire indication of where things are at...

Emma most probably didnt get any money from this release, I just hope that BMG have some plans for her in the future.

Sadly, that has been the case since the physical started dying out and just accelerated once when streaming happened. I know when streaming started killing other formats in Sweden, singer/songwriters (Per Gessle among others) were in uproar because of the poor pay they got for streams. But you can't really stop evolution - try to convince a 15 year old that they're going to have to waste space on an *.AAC-file.

I'll have a read when I get chance but she must have signed an awful deal to only get £200. Streams or not Kylie did over 50k physicals and downloads first week in the UK alone. A lot of those expensive vinyls.

A lot of money is still being earned from Kylie's music (BMG have put out 3 albums from her in pretty quick succession) so if that song writer is getting so little it is more that the profits are going elsewhere.

I was just giving an example cos the article expands on it. The £200 come from streams only, from what I understand. But it does remind me of how bad contracts are across the arts sector, to be honest.

And yes, streaming is the future and the present already BUT it shouldnt mean that people shouldnt be paid properly for them. New ways of payment need to be changed, as at the moment only top selling artists get any money from making music and that is not ok...

The article is saying that record labels are keeping the majority of profits from streaming sales and not distributing it amongst songwriters and singers. I also question how many people were co-writing on that song as sometimes there are like 10 co-writers and having 1 song on an album with that many co-writers on it you're going to get even less.

Not to mention if it is 1 album track it's hardly going to be pulling in big streaming numbers especially on a Kylie album.

There are NDAs between record companies and streaming services, meaning that neither do the artists know nor do we know how much streaming equals income. But it seems to me that yet again the artists involved (not just the lead artists but all creatives) are being shat on.

Streaming equalled a massive loss of income but it doesnt really have to be that way and streaming services as well rich so they could afford to pay better to the artists involved. Also, most lead artists (not writers or producers) on record labels now are on 360-deals, meaning that they get a salary with some extra stuff and nothing else, whilst record labels keep all the profits from everything including touring and sponsorships. It's not like before when artists would get huge lump sums of money in advance and then get would also get part of the profits - or if it is, it is much more reduced than it used to be.

The industry really needs to change, specially in a post-COVID world where most artists ability to make ends meet has been drastically reduced.

ANYWAY the point that I was making is that these two songs will never be nice little earners for Emma, when they flopped and are not really taken up on streaming at all...

Posted by: sammy01 10th December 2020, 07:24 PM

Oh I'm not disagreeing with you, I was simply questioning how much a songwriter on one album track from an album. Also it's very strange if she only earned "200 when the majority of Kylies are physicals, which made me wonder how many have co-written on the song as sometimes it is ridiculous.

I also don't think either will be nice sellers they will be eclipsed by superior Christmas songs. I mean last year CHFC sold 620 copies and that's not just streams as it was also released to download platforms like iTunes etc. Santa Baby did even worse with 155 copies. At this rate it will take her 10 years to get to 6k copies... That's unless she releases a new physical bundle every year in which case it will be a lovely seller w00t.gif laugh.gif

It only needs to be put on one decent Christmas playlist one year to be a massive success (solo Spice girls standard wise) I'm sure that's why every man and his dog has released a Christmas song in the last 3 or 4 years.

I mean Kylie's Santa Baby was just a b-side.

Posted by: tommie 10th December 2020, 10:31 PM

Emma's Santa Baby is probably never going to do much due to Kylie already having a recording of it. They're in the same age bracket and target demographic, so Kylie's will always win out there. If Emma had been 20 years younger, then maybe her Santa Baby could do something.

Coming Home For Christmas is just dull.

One of the worst songs on My happy place (come away with me) is on a chill covers playlist with a fair amount of likes and is now the 2nd most played song from it iirc. Depressing it is that song but just shows how playlists dictate popularity because no one would be seeking out Come away with me over most of her other material.

Getting added to playlists is great but unless the right songs are chosen like you say Sammy it goes to show people just play what's in front of them just because it's there.

I wish she would push Coming Home for Christmas more, even though I don't particularly love it (the lack of a bridge is so apparent!)

But the record company should be pushing it on Christmas Playlists. Santa Baby has over 600,000 streams, whereas Coming Home for Christmas is just over 120,000....

It must be getting poor streams since Emma isn't popular on Spotify.

The fact that Coming Home For Christmas hasnt even got 150,000 streams on Spotify cry.gif

Anyway, London date is sold out and Manchester is doing well as well. The others, needs a big big push! She will be fine, but would be great if she can pack up Brighton Dome and the Birmingham ones a bit more. They are next week, and like Brighton is pretty much half full... Brighton Dome is always hard to sell, sadly, but I really thought that the sea side yummy mummies of Brighton would flock to this...
