The Saturdays singer Una Foden has revealed she will release her first solo record this year.

The stunning star, 34, from Co Tipperary, has been working behind the scenes on her own material and is ready to take
the plunge.

She revealed: “I have been writing it for the last two years and putting it all together.

“I have been working very hard at the album and in 2016 I hope to release it.

“It’s a scary prospect but at the same time it’s really exciting – I have written everything from scratch.”

Mum-of-two Una said she has poured her heart into the songs which mean a lot to her.

She added: “Every song in the album is very personal to me and I wrote from the heart so I can’t wait to share it with everyone. I really enjoyed it and I loved making it so if people enjoy listening to it as much, then I’ll be very happy.

“It’s a singer/songwriter album – it’s me and my guitar. I’ve been in The Saturdays for eight years so there are elements of pop in it too and a little bit of country as well.”

Una collaborated with other writers to bring her songs to fruition and got help on some tracks from Amy Wadge who wrote Thinking Out Loud with Ed Sheeran.

And The Voice Of Ireland coach said she might sing one of the tracks on the live shows.

She added: “I would love to do that and there is a possibility if the timing is right.”

But Una’s new record doesn’t mean it’s the end for The Saturdays.

She revealed: “We are doing our own thing and allowing ourselves that time to explore different things.

“We have been together for quite a while so we can afford to take the time out now. We’ll come back together when we feel the time is right.”

Una will be back on The Voice Of Ireland this Sunday at 6.30pm on RTE One when she hopes to find another winner to follow in the footsteps of Patrick Donoghue who has launched his pop career under the name Patrick James.

Una said: “I was very lucky to have talent like Patrick on my team and I worked so well with him – we get on so well.

“I want to make that connection again, I want to look after my team and make them the best they can be.

“I have a really strong team this year again and I have high hopes for them.”

Una is still working with Patrick and hopes 2016 will be the year his career takes off.

She added: “He’s in London in the studio recording a track we wrote and he is putting the vocals down.

“We met up in the studio for two days and wrote it together – it’s a great track.”

But Una warned those lucky enough to be on The Voice Of Ireland this year the show doesn’t mean automatic success.

She said: “The music industry in general isn’t an easy one to break no matter how talented you are.”

Una also uploaded a video of Aoife dancing (to a song that has been prepped, just no sound unfortunately), so we know there is definitely some Una music on the way! I find it amusing shes been writing for the last two years though, probably when the band were still a thing! kink.gif

OMG! cheer.gif cheer.gif Come on Una! Let's just hope her music fairs a little better than flopnessa kink.gif (I kid) so that makes 3 of the 5 working on solo stuff to look forward to !!!!!!

Although I swear Una is the only one who shares our pipe dream that The Sats will be back laugh.gif

Posted by: (Zach) 2nd January 2016, 04:57 PM

This is very exciting! I wonder if she'll try to promote in the UK as well or just in Ireland. The Voice is a decent platform for her there so I can see her charting pretty easily. I liked what she had to say about the Sats as it made sense. I really do believe they'll come back together at some point, just not as soon as we initially thought.

Posted by: DoggySwami 3rd January 2016, 03:05 PM

I really hope she will use the new series of The Voice of Ireland (which premieres tonight, by the way) as a platform to promote her music.

2016 could be very exciting if we get releases from Vanessa, Una and Mollie.

Posted by: (Zach) 3rd January 2016, 04:45 PM

It will be very exciting, especially with Mollie having a deal and Una having a platform to promote on. I hope Vanessa has some big plans for 2016 that we don't know about.

We can probably get one or two bops, the most pop-ish one.

But the propect of an album of just her guitar kinda scares me... unsure.gif Will there be no other instruments at all? I mean, bless her, I know she can play guitar and all, but it's not like she was THAT good either, I can't believe she would rely on just that. It's just gonna sound all so samey... unsure.gif

Posted by: Jimmy Jam 3rd January 2016, 09:37 PM

I agree, that is a worry for me as well. That EP she has on iTunes is just her and her guitar, and it is all a bit amateur samey unsure.gif

Posted by: (Zach) 3rd January 2016, 09:42 PM

I'm sure she wouldn't do that laugh.gif Then again, you never know.. I'm praying for an Alias collabo.

I don't think so. She is now finally able to breath from all the pressure from being in a band's spotlight. She probably find her life as it is good for now.

We all know that she is going to get criticize by the general public for her weak voice and what not, it will be probably too much for her to handle right now.

Posted by: (Zach) 9th January 2016, 06:23 PM

I think a Frankie album could be amazing but if it did happen I think it would fall short of expectations. She has so much potential but I don't see her pushing hard enough to reach that level and her solo career/campaign wouldn't live up to the hype.

Posted by: Virginia's Walls 9th January 2016, 06:51 PM

Una is the only who appears to be confirmed to be releasing a full album. I reckon she's signed with an Irish label (universal Ireland possibly: the label associated with The Voice) or an independent British one like some of the Westlife members did.

Posted by: (Zach) 20th February 2016, 10:41 PM

Una/Rachel would be life changing.

Posted by: Hurricane 28th March 2016, 09:13 PM

You know what? I'm excited. We could possibly get 2-3 decent ballads out of it because that's been one of her strenght and if she decides to venture more in the pop side (than the folk-country one) on 1-2 tracks, we could get a decent bop as well.

Slay me, Una.

If it turns out to be with her 60 year old uncle Declan Nerny I'm out. It'll probably be Tich tho or some member of Westlife.. It also doesn't seem like the album will be released before The Voice ends which will be a complete waste imo (There are 4 more live shows remaining.)

Yeah she should capitalise on Voice promo, but when do they ever do anything the easy way coffee.gif

But definitely ready for Una and her guitar to slay me!!

Posted by: Hurricane 29th March 2016, 02:40 AM

Well, I'm guessing if it's being released worldwide (thus not just in Ireland), then I can understand why she isn't rushing things to promote it on The Voice.

Either way, it's a bit stupid because it's not like she was going to make waves solo-wise outside Ireland and possibly the UK, but whatever...

Posted by: Wall 29th March 2016, 04:56 AM

The Voice Ireland has no effect so a live performance wouldn't really matter.

The best she can hope for in the UK is being supported by Heart / Radio 2 although I heavily doubt any radio will touch her, I'm guessing she will get higher than Vanessa White ever did on iTunes though and trouble the top 600.

I would rather it be one of the girls (Mollie) to be honest. We'll see how the material turns out as folk really isn't my thing, yet Una has written some pretty great tracks and I don't think she'll totally abandon her pop background.

Fantastic debut slot!

I was listening to "Get Ready, Get Set" on the way home earlier, love her vocals on the upbeat stuff but I can't wait to hear me some ballads!

Posted by: LeeWallace 11th April 2016, 06:11 PM

Yeah it's a good debut slot, I'm expecting Una to not out the song on iTunes though in typical Saturdays fashion and let the promo slot go to waste and not to push her into the top 1,500 on Irish iTunes

Posted by: P@ul 11th April 2016, 06:14 PM

A reason to watch the Voice Of Ireland! Tbh last year's winner performed his single last night and it went from #25 beforehand to #21 back to #27 ( It was #2 two days beforehand.Irish iTunes is a mess laugh.gif) but it'll still be great to hear the direction she has taken and the quality regardless if it is even released after it or charts well.

It must be part of the deal with the label. If I recall correctly, she signed the contract pretty late in the recording process, so she must have put most of the album together by herself.

Or think of All Saints as an example, when their new single didn't chart in the top100, but the album was released anyway.

Posted by: Kuki Sanban 11th April 2016, 06:24 PM

Is there any way to watch The Voice (Ireland) from the UK!? Or will we just have to wait until somebody uploads it to youtube?

Posted by: Martyn 11th April 2016, 10:22 PM

I think we will have to wait till it gets uploaded like we did when The Saturdays performed on it.

Posted by: (Zach) 12th April 2016, 01:36 AM

Una coming for that 14-72-Out chart run in Ireland.

But seriously, this is very exciting! I would keel over if she blindsided us with a GRGS-type bop. I'm expecting an acoustic snoozefest though sadly.

Her song was about Aoife Belle!! I give up!! laugh.gif It was an uptempo country/folk song. It was nice and catchy but blandish.

I only watched the last 30 seconds, but I liked what I heard. It was more upbeat than I expected.

I don't think The Voice has any effect anyway really. She'll more than likely get promo on Irish talk shows and radio support when it is released. The song and performance is getting a good response on Twitter and she did appear very comfortable performing on her own.

Posted by: Scherz 17th April 2016, 09:34 PM

Definitely not what we need from her.

And Vanessa's output is infinitely better.

Posted by: Jonjo 17th April 2016, 10:25 PM

I really like it. It's cute. Definitely not a hit, but it's really nice.

She should've entered Eurovision for Ireland this year though.

Posted by: Joe. 17th April 2016, 10:28 PM

Much better than Vanessa's output, but that performance was ropey at best.

Posted by: LeeWallace 18th April 2016, 03:48 AM

I've provided it a couple of listens and it's nice and cute.

I actually love the bridge before the chorus and the oh la la in the chorus but the verses in the chorus don't seem to go with the chorus, especially with "Just keep staring at the moon" It's not a hit but it's a nice little album track.

Miles better than anything from Vanessa though, Can they release in the same week so we can see who actually sells a copy?

Posted by: Hurricane 18th April 2016, 05:10 AM

It's a bit blandish, but I don't think it's a bad song by any means.

I don't exactly have an opinion on which material is the best from Una or Vanessa. In both cases, I feel a bit underwhelmed, although I do think there was more thoughts put into making Una's song catchy than there ever was with Vanessa's material which don't have that much replay value unless you are Totto. unsure.gif

I'm glad she's releasing music, though! wub.gif

I love it! I was there last night (sat in front of Ben who is even more big & beautiful in the flesh!!) and in the ad breaks Una was interacting with the audience alot and you could tell she was nervous.

It sounded great in the studio and I wish they showed a bit more of the audience in the video because everyone was really clapping and swaying along, and the "ooh la la la la la" was very catchy we were all singing along by the end

It is definitely an album track not a lead single but I think her aim was to showcase the general direction her music will be going, and she did it well! Spoke to her manager as well he said the album will be out the end of the summer and she has loads of Irish and British things lined up for promo

Aw that's great to hear about UK plans also smile.gif! Imo promo on UK tv shows can sometimes be better promo than Irish ones here (The Voice UK winner's single charted higher than last year's Irish winner I think!) I agree with others that it has definitely grown on me but it isn't single worthy despite it's catchiness. I actually think this sound is a smart choice Irish wise as country/pop is very popular here.Nathan Carter Wagon Wheel was one of the biggest songs last year which is a similar genre. I'm also confident that Una is a big enough name now to get good radioairplay and Irish TV promotion and can see her attracting an older audience as well.

Yes, but if the video's been watched only 19k times despite it being avalaible worldwide AND considering apparently the last winner single of The Voice sold 98 copies (98!!!), maybe it was for the best that she's waiting for"bigger" (better?) promo slots.

Posted by: (Zach) 22nd April 2016, 03:57 AM

Yeah, I guess. I just figure if it's going to be a buzz track or album track anyway then why not put it up for sale? Una could probably make 98 loaves of brown bread with those sales. Also, I'm pretty sure 98 sales would be enough to get her into the Top 10 on iTunes for a few hours. I'd be curious to know how much a song has to sell in order to make the official Irish Top 10. I'm guessing 1,000 or so?

I really love this track and I don't even think it would make a bad single, at least in Ireland only.

Posted by: DoggySwami 22nd April 2016, 03:20 PM

Not releasing the track has to be a conscious decision, because they have taken off iTunes and Spotify her Sorry EP, so they are definitely not interested in the revenue they could get until they launch the campaign in full force.

Posted by: P@ul 23rd April 2016, 04:48 PM

Just reading an interview Una did with Irish Independent out today claiming "Una has just signed a record deal with universal in the UK"

Posted by: LushLife 23rd April 2016, 04:56 PM

Oh wow, very surprised she managed a record deal especially over Vanessa.

Posted by: Jimmy Jam 23rd April 2016, 05:23 PM

With Universal?! slay at her getting in with a good label!

Posted by: Hurricane 23rd April 2016, 06:55 PM

Actually from the reports we've had a year ago (yes! Jesus, we've been waiting for so long lmao), Una was the closest to sign a deal, with Mollie a close follow-up. I just think Mollie announced her deal right away whereas Una probably kept it quiet? Or maybe she had more talks, so the process was longer, who knows.

Vanessa seems pretty adamant about doing what she really wants to do, I think she isn't going to sign a deal with a major label unless they give her full control. On one hand, that's truly admirable, but on the other hand, it will also cut her off from many amazing possibilities.

Anyway, excited for Una's solo ventures!

Posted by: (Zach) 24th April 2016, 02:43 AM

This is huuuuuge! As much as I love and believe in them both I didn't think even one of them would get a major deal let alone BOTH of them. So happy right now!

I'm not gonna lie, it does make me want to see Frankie and Rochelle attempting to get a record deal with a major label as well...

Posted by: LushLife 24th April 2016, 08:13 PM

Rochelle could quite easily get the biggest record deal, she's one of the biggest presenters in the UK right now and she's on almost everything, I'm hoping she manages to remain on xtra Factor or her and Marvin co-host the voice.

I didn't hear her say she has quit The Saturdays... She did the usual ramble of we are still together but not actively. Apparently don't expect them to do anything for the next 2 years though. 2018 would be a great year to come back as a 10th anniversary.

Solo single is out in the next 4 weeks with the album to come about 3 months after that (4th quarter realness). Staring at the Moon will be on the album. She shoots the video for the single next week.

What are you talking about? In what world do you live in that The Saturdays are still together? And at the same time how do you realize that she's going solo now, when she already performed one of the songs on The Voice of Ireland months ago?

And what is this bitterness that makes you say that she will flop hard? Open your eyes, man: The Saturdays flop hard, Vanessa flops hard, everyone from this group is more likely to flop hard than not. But she wants to give it a shot with the music she's written because that's her passion.

You would think that following this group would teach you to respect other people and don't laugh at those acts who don't sell well, but man, some people just want to spread their hate.

Well The Saturdays are officially STILL together as they've announced on multiple occasions that they've not split whenever they're asked by news reporters?

How is it bitterness by me declaring that Una will "Flop Hard"? It's called realism. There's no way that radio stations will support Una. The only member that would get radio play is Mollie / Rochelle and possibly Frankie, the only thing that could help Una is Radio 2 but I doubt they will playlist her.

I think you've blown my comment out of proportion and while attempting to add 1+1 you got 6.

But Una is the only one who got an established successful record label to back a full album campaign? Im sure flop Frankie would jump at the opportunity to release an album with a big record label like Decca instead of releasing some jewellery and flying to Australia to be on I'm a celeb get me out of here now

Posted by: Ryan. 5th August 2016, 04:34 PM

I think it's harsh to pin the splitting on Una, I think it's very likely they would just have been a Girls Aloud/One Direction situation by saying "we haven't split up" but it being unlikely they'll ever do anything again other than potentially a anniversary/charity single (e.g. Something New).

Posted by: SeanGrey 5th August 2016, 04:39 PM

I think it's unfair to blame the split on any of them - given three of them are releasing music and one of them is quite a big name in the world of presenting, I wouldn't see how it's fair to pin blame on any of them.

Posted by: tommie 5th August 2016, 07:08 PM

Dear Lord.

The Saturdays likely fulfilled their record contract with the Greatest Hits release and since that flopped said record company has no interest in working with them again and other record companies likely aren't interested in releasing The Saturdays material (at least at a price that would make it worth to split five ways). What they're doing is leaving the door open if someone would approach them with a favorable deal, but most likely they won't do anything together again bar the occasional gig (if it's paid well enough).

Posted by: (Zach) 5th August 2016, 11:57 PM

I was hoping for a bigger label but I'm still happy with this nonetheless. I'm excited for the first single and hope her material isn't too folk or country.

The Saturdays being on hiatus and pursuing solo careers is nothing new. I am actually very confident that they will come back together again -- we just don't know when or to what extent. I don't think they would keep harping on it if that wasn't their intention. I'm sure they, just like we, realize that all of that is contingent on their schedules and how much success they experience with their solo careers.

I think the girls will genuinely want to reunite at some point and agree that the only thing standing in the way would be lack of support and public interest. It would be ideal if at least one of them (money's on Mollie here) managed a high profile solo career so that there would be renewed interest in the group. If Mollie does even half decently with Island they might be willing to sign the Sats up the road.

Posted by: tommie 6th August 2016, 12:18 AM

If one of them gets a high profile, then it's finito for the five of them.

No way a girl that's earning a lot of £££ to give it up to re-join a flop girl group. All of them need to flop so horribly that the only option seems to be The Saturdays.

Posted by: (Zach) 6th August 2016, 02:25 AM

That might be true, but I think they'd get back together if given the chance and the label backing.

Why are you so eager to believe blindly that they are still somehow an active group despite many facts pointing to the contrary, but you rush in to say that Una has "officially" left based only on your imagination? Why do you need to single Una out when she isn't even the first one to publish solo music? Vanessa has already gone solo, Rochelle has even left Fascination and got a new management for her own.

Damn, just blame all of them. The five of them dissolved their own company and divided the money.

You talk about realism and then you make up a scenario when one of them has to beg to come back to The Saturdays (of all groups) for money...open your eyes, none of them will sell music unless there's a major surprise. Not solo, not in a group.

It's just bizarre how a Saturdays fan can attack any of the girls so viciously for not selling, when we have lived through more flops than hits through their history. How can someone not understand at this point that there are more reasons to release music other than making big sums of money? That small releases paired with other endeavours can also be profitable? That a passion of music can make up for the lack of success?

Posted by: ThePensmith 7th August 2016, 01:02 PM

You can always rely on The Saturdays artist forum to deliver that OTT fan fight realness...

Anyway. Looking forward to this. Una better bring that Sheryl Crow / early Corrs vibes with her solo stuff (as I fully expect she will)...

Also I just discovered The Shires are signed to the same division of Decca as Una. They've managed a Top 10 Silver album in the UK so that gives me the tiniest bit of hope for her.

Probably to an extent, but it would be worse if they went with similar genres. I don't think Una was going to generate that much buzz anyway.

Posted by: ___∆___ 21st August 2016, 07:52 PM

So it looks like flops all round for solo Saturday's - Mollie coming for that #94 smash, Vanessa pretending she doesn't care about chart positions and Una going country on us.

In fairness Una could be the one to score a 'hit' album if marketed correctly - Wouldn't be a stellar seller but could certainly benefit from the 4k market needed to go Top 10 especially if R2 get behind her.

WTF? Mollie's debut single only JUST got released two days ago and Una hasn't even released anything yet. Give them a chance.

Mollie's single went to #18 on iTunes as an OA/OS release. The Saturdays haven't had a hit since 2013 and Mollie hasn't been on TV or done anything in the public eye in ages. Only The Sats fanbase knew about the release and they still managed to go top 20 on iTunes. The video has just crossed 200K views which is decent for a new act and she hasn't even started her radio tour yet.

Fair enough if it does end up charting at #94 and she gets dropped or whatever but right now it's JUST began. She has a chance and so far things are looking promising.

Jeeeez.

Una's debut single is called Stay My Love and is featuring Sam Palladio from Nashville.

It's like the answer to "Back to You" tongue.gif That's a decent feature though. Sounds like this will be full on country then.

She is supporting Ward Thomas on their UK tour. Get that promo

Posted by: Hurricane 6th October 2016, 10:23 PM

I've never heard of them.

Their singles have been flops, but they did have a #1 album in the UK about a month ago, and they were apparently the first UK Country Act to hit the top spot. So, I guess they definitely have an audience that buys albums. That's always good for Una.

I suppose she will premiere a few other albumtracks too as I can't really see her doing only 'Stay My Love' and 'Staring At The Moon'. unsure.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th October 2016, 10:26 PM

The single is due to impact on 2nd December! So I would expect it to be released before then, can't be far off now biggrin.gif

Just saw on Twitter the album isn't due till next year.

Posted by: tommie 18th October 2016, 02:38 AM

Considering season five of Nashville premieres in early January I'd guess they'll be trying to release it around then. She'd get lost in the Christmas rush anyway.

Well, I doubt she would use the words bop or banger, but if she promised some uptempo pop tracks...she delivered. Battlelines, The Waiting Game, SOS, Staring at the Moon, Alarm Bells...that's half the album being uptempo. And some of the other songs are more midtempo than ballads.

The album is an inoffensive country-pop collection (it's more acoustic than country anyway, isn't it?), which is what she's been talking about all this time.

Battlelines is pretty great. For me the next great solo-Saturdays song after Back To You.

Posted by: allfiredup93 10th February 2017, 10:20 AM

Album is #2 on the pop chart and #14 on main chart
Stay My Love is #18 on the pop chart

The studio version of Staring At The Moon reminds me of something that would be on fun.'s album

Posted by: Regina 10th February 2017, 06:31 PM

SUCH a great album. Battlelines, Angel Like You, Staring At The Moon (THAT CHORUS) and Grow Up Not Old are all essential.

Can't get over how much she sounds like Mandy Moore too, gorgeous voice.

It is a good album! Proud of my girl!

Posted by: (Zach) 11th February 2017, 03:28 PM

Taking into account that this is not my genre of choice, I'm pretty impressed with the album as well.

Battlelines 7/10 Nice track, if not a bit too generic
The Waiting Game 5/10 Has grown on me a bit since the initial release
Stay My Love 6/10 Not my cup of tea but it's a good song and the harmonies are great
All You Ever Need Is Love 5/10
S.O.S. 8/10 This is my early favorite. Sounds like it could be on Wordshaker
Please Don't Tell Me 4/10
Staring At The Moon 8/10 Been perched for this, studio version didn't disappoint
Alarm Bells 6/10
Craving You 2/10 Not feeling it
Out The Door 5/10
Grow Up Not Old 4/10
Angel Like You 5/10

I have a feeling a lot of these will grow.

She's still doing solidly at #11 in UK and #8 in Ireland!
Her promo hasn't been bad but I wish she had a few more TV appearances in like This Morning/Loose Women/ The Late Late Show in Ireland?
All she's down for as far as I know is Lorraine on Tuesday for the remainder of the week unless she announces more!

No Saturdays songs (although Frankie and Vanessa were in attendance, along with Ben and Aoife Belle. Peter Loraine was also sat behind us!) but she did do a couple of covers - she did "The First Cut is the Deepest" (the Sheryl Crow version), she also did "Riptide" by Vance Joy and a traditional Celtic folk song called "Black is the Colour".

Hmm, they may be close in streams but I'm guessing BTY is still miles ahead in true sales.

Posted by: DoggySwami 27th April 2017, 07:43 PM

The difference is that one was sold just as a standalone single, and the other shared sales with the album. Which makes impossible to clearly measure the impact of each song. One charted at #99 on the singles chart (which is pretty hard to enter nowadays), and the other sold a #28 album in the UK and #11 in Ireland.
