Original Topic Title: 18 Years On: 'Baby One More Time' (Album)
Original Topic Description: EIGH. TEEN.

-----

18 years ago (12th January 1999), Britney dropped her first studio album, 'Baby One More Time' and from then on, pop has never been the same again, with the birth of an icon and living legend!

What are your memories of the album? Do you still listen to it? What tracks are your faves and least faves etc?

HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY 'BABY ONE MORE TIME'!!! <3 <3 <3

My faves (along with the singles ofc) are:

'I Will Be There': (i.e. the single that never was!!!!)

---
'Deep In My Heart':

Argh, 18 years... sob.gif

You've picked my two favourite album tracks Jonjo!

I have a very specific memory of getting this album (a very boring one lol, but I'll describe it anyway). I remember being in Tesco with mum, and she asked me if I'd like a video or a CD. Initially I chose this Simpsons video, but based on the title & the parental guidance warning, she felt it wouldn't be suitable for me (I'd just turned 11, I'm sure it would have been fine, mother xox). She did the right thing by saying no anyway, because my next choice was Britney's album which she happily bought for me. *.* (I have a feeling I got it in the first week of its release, which was 8th-14th March '99 in the UK!).

I had been obsessed with '...Baby One More Time' the song for a while (obvs), but the only two other tracks to initially grab my attention were '(You Drive Me) Crazy' & 'Deep In My Heart'. Otherwise I remember feeling pretty let down by the album at first. However I stuck with it, and it really grew on me with further listens - and my love for Britney was solidified. wub.gif I played the album so many times throughout '99; it takes me back to the transition between primary & secondary school.

When it comes to the singles: '...Broken Heart' was definitely the worst choice (not that I even knew it was a single back then, given it wasn't released in the UK, but still... bad choice, Brit ;o). The other 4 singles were the perfect 4, but if she'd stretched to a 5th I'd have liked 'I Will Be There' to have its moment.

My love for 'Crazy' multiplied by about 100 when 'The Stop Remix' came out. heart.gif It's probably the single from this album that I've listened to the most over the years... definitely a close run thing with 'Born To Make You Happy' (which is one of my favourite ever ballads). I still get life from '...Baby' every time I play it, but for some reason I tend to revisit it less than the other two. 'Sometimes' is a lovely listen every now and then.

Overall: Fond memories of this era and the album makes for a cute listen overall, but I don't return to it too often, and she has certainly topped it multiple times in her career. cool2.gif

We should never forget that Britney was the pioneer of a relatively new form of communication. *.*

Urban Outfitters in the US is issuing a limited 2,500 copy run of '...Baby One More Time' on vinyl! Edit: It's available to pre-order again!

Limited editions that are exclusive to Urban Outfitters US is like, the worst thing when it comes to the resurgence of vinyl. dry.gif There's clearly going to be more than 2,500 fans around the world who'll want a Britney album on vinyl.

https://www.amazon.ca/Baby-One-More-Time-Vinyl/dp/B07HSKPHR9 The album is being released on picture disc - the first time that it’ll be internationally available on vinyl.

Note: There’s been two previous vinyl pressings that were Urban Outfitters exclusives in the US (2017 - pink & white swirl vinyl: 2,500 copies limited edition // 2018 - clear vinyl: 10,000 copies limited edition).

I've never been a fan of the American cover of BOMT (the album) it looks a bit too cheesy and girly, the UK one is far superior!

I prefer the international cover too; that is the image that I associated with the album for many years. I don't think I knew about the US/Canada cover for quite a long time! I wonder why her label decided to go with two different front covers?

The picture disc actually looks cute, it's going to be in a transparent cover:

Side B of the record:

(I feel like the second side should have been the international cover, but oh well~)

Lots of other BOMT related merchandise here including t shirt, mug and a key ring! ~ https://store.britneyspears.com/?utm_campai...;utm_term=N%2FA

I miss the purity and simplicity of this kind of pop. sad.gif Everything needs to be "edgy" or have some sort of gimmick attached to it nowadays!

'I Will Be There' & 'Deep In My Heart' still bang SO f***ING hard!

I picked up the 20th anniversary 12" picture disc of the 'Baby One More Time' album at HMV over the weekend. It's actually stood up so well for two decades! I agree with you Jonjo, I miss the purity of that kind of pop music too, although having watched the Max Martin/Cheiron documentary that was on BBC Four last Friday (Britney featured of course, it's on iPlayer now to catch up), from my standing, the songs sound simple enough but they're actually quite complex when you see how they were put together.

1997-2002 was my favourite era for music, including pop genre. I think it really was a special era that will never be replicated again. It makes me look at the dire state of music these days with pitty.

I've done my retrospective piece about '...Baby' and its UK debut on my new blog series called 'The Story of Pop: 1999' this week: https://alexscsb.com/2019/02/21/the-story-o...1999-chapter-8/

As I mention in the blog, I feel like people forget just how important a record this was given all we've experienced and seen in the two decades (not to mention that which Britney has) since. It's remained more timeless than people probably give it credit for.
