BuzzJack Music Forum _ Katy Perry _ 'Teenage Dream' • Second Album Discussion

Posted by: Jark 10th May 2010, 03:22 PM

Katy's sophomore album is officially titled Teenage Dream. It's released August 27th in Australia so probably the 30th here in the UK but we'll see.

First single is Dr Luke and Max Martin's 'California Gurls', also leaked so far are 'E.T. (Extra Terrestrial)' and 'In Between' (or at least a clip of it, which is now gone from youtube). VERY excited for this. biggrin.gif

Posted by: RunJonjoRun 10th May 2010, 03:29 PM

I'm confused. Is 'E.T.', 'Futuristic Lover'? drama.gif ERGH! My tagging is gonna be $h!t on last.fm drama.gif The snippet is 'In Between', which is what I heard was now called 'E.T.'?! wacko.gif CONFUZZLED MUCH?!

Posted by: Jark 10th May 2010, 03:54 PM

I can't CONFIRM but I think Futuristic Lover IS Extra Terrestrial.

Posted by: *Trouble* 10th May 2010, 04:31 PM

Where can i listen to leaked tracks?

So excited for this w00t.gif

So excited about this. w00t.gif It's going to be awesome me thinks. E.T. sounds so amazing. I totally getting this album. smile.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 10th May 2010, 05:09 PM

So California Gurls is Tik Tok/Love At First Sight/A Public Affair rolled into one and E.T. sounds like All The Things She Said! heehee.gif

I do like both a lot though - it helps that all four of those songs are great (well A Public Affair less so than the others).

Posted by: Chris It Up 10th May 2010, 05:09 PM

August? sad.gif thought it might have been sooner. Very excited for this though, One of the Boys was a brilliant album.

Really looking forward to this album. I actually prefer "E.T." to "California Gurls" at the moment, and the reason is that

They are waiting too long to release this. The lead single is more of an 'instant hit' type of song and there is going to be too much of a gap between its peak and the album's release. You can maybe get away with that in the States but with regard to the UK, Radio stations are gonna start picking up on it very soon and if they end up not releasing it til August (usually a couple of weeks before the album), people will either be sick of it by then or will have given up, or even will have downloaded it illegally. Unless they are going with what Sony done with Kesha and Tik Tok, releasing the single soon then releasing a second single the week before or week of the album. Either way, their best bet is to bring the release forward to at least Mid-late July.

Posted by: danieljohn. 11th May 2010, 08:49 AM

They may bring the album forward, unfortunately the song leaked about 20 days before it's planned radio release. So the release date was changed.

Posted by: PopBoi 11th May 2010, 02:11 PM

the song is deffo a grower, but this album title is just

looking forward to it though biggrin.gif

KATY PERRY: FOUR-LETTER FAREWELL IN HOT ALBUM

KATY Perry opens her heart on her brilliant second album Teenage Dreams.

Singer Katy Perry admitted to me: “I’ve had a bit of a British influence in my life.”

The disc doesn’t drop until Aug ust but I was lucky enough to attend a beach-themed listening party in LA on Wednesday night where KP, 25, talked through most of the finished tunes.

I predict songs like Firework and Circle The Drain will be even bigger than her worldwide hits I Kissed A Girl and Hot n Cold.

Ex-boyfriend Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes was a fool to let the gorgeous singer slip through his fingers. And the poignant Circle The Drain seems to explain their split.

Katy, who performs at the MTV Movie Awards tomorrow, admitted: “People will think it’s about Travis but it could be about many other diff erent situations.

“Circle The Drain is intense – it’s my Alanis Morrisette’s You Oughta Know.

“It has the F-word in it five times but I don’t think it’s me shocking people – you always say f*** when it’s called for.”

Katy added: “Some of the stuff I played tonight is a bit sugary sweet but when you listen to the record head to toe I think it’s completely appetising. I didn’t want to have just club songs.

“People are living real lives, working jobs, having relationships. There’s definitely a bit more substance and perspective on this record.”

Naturally there’s a bunch of ditties penned with fiancé Russell Brand, 35, in mind. But not the saucy Peacock.

Katy grinned: “I’m a big fan of innuendo and puns. Peacock’s fun, but it could be tot ally dirty. A five-year-old could sing it, but your 15-year-old will know what it means.

“My Russell songs are more romantic – such as Not Like The Movies.

“Sometimes we girls are like: ‘He’s the one,’ but deep down there’s that little scratch. There’s no scratch at this moment, which is fantastic. When you know, you know.”

There’s a distinct British feel on a number of the tracks and on Californian Gurls, Katy’s disappointed she was unable to work with our Calvin Harris, 26.

She explained: “We tried to work together three or four times but he was busy making his record.

“When this record goes triple platinum, knock on wood, then he’ll wish he made the time.”

MTV Movie Awards air at 9pm on Monday, MTV UK.

FIRST LISTEN

HERE’S my track-by-track verdict on Teenage Dream...

CALIFORNIA GURLS: Sunny single has already sold a million copies in the US. Expect it to go straight to No 1 here. 5/5

TEENAGE DREAM: Summer in a bottle with a storming pop beat. 5/5

FIREWORK: Katy’s personal favourite. Euphoric and clubby. 5/5

LAST FRIDAY NIGHT: “The dumbest on the record. Waking Up In Vegas 2.0,” says KP. 5/5

CIRCLE THE DRAIN: “I want to be your lover, not your f***ing mother,” she rocks. 5/5

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY: Marching drums meet pretty nursery rhyme-esqe vocals. 3/5

PEACOCK: Cheeky double entendres and a pulsating house beat make this a hit in waiting. 4/5

PEARL: “She is a pyramid, but with him she’s a grain of sand.” A thoughtful slowie. 3/5

NOT LIKE THE MOVIES: A piano-driven ballad where Katy sings her pipes out. 3/5

Only 9 tracks? sad.gif

Posted by: Gramii 6th June 2010, 10:44 AM

Why are so many people releasing 9 track albums atm? No wonder the album market is so low when people are paying full price for 9/10 songs :/

I do like the sound of all of these tracks though and will certainly be parting with my hard earned cash to buy it biggrin.gif

Posted by: Robot 6th June 2010, 10:46 AM

“I want to be your lover, not your f***ing mother,”

EPIC. wub.gif Disappointed at only 9 tracks too, though. sad.gif

Posted by: Gramii 6th June 2010, 10:47 AM

So 'In Between' and E.T are not included? Unless the names have been changed...

Posted by: danieljohn. 6th June 2010, 10:49 AM

I think its just a sampler played at an event smile.gif

As it's not released until August, I'd presume their still working on it?

Posted by: animal 6th June 2010, 10:58 AM

Hope so!

I will be dissapointed if it's only 9 tracks. I really want E.T on there! sad.gif

Posted by: Tactical 6th June 2010, 11:11 AM

Ugh so dissapointed it's going to be a 9-track album sad.gif

Posted by: AltheGreat 6th June 2010, 11:24 AM

I'll also be rather annoyed if it's a 9-tracker.

E.T. has to be on there!!

Posted by: Jark 6th June 2010, 12:24 PM

Of course it's not a 9 track album. She's still in the studio for starters and full albums are never played at listening events.

Katy is set release album teasers and a new single from the album.

QUOTE
Katy Perry has insisted that fans will hear more songs from her new album before it is officially released.

Perry, whose new single 'California Gurls' is out this week, is planning for her fans to hear more material including the next single from the record, called Teenage Dream, before its available.

"We will have another single out really soon," she told KIIS-FM.

"Before the album comes out, I think a lot people will be hearing a lot of different songs - it won't just be one song to tide you over until then because it seems a little far away for me actually. I mean the whole world could explode before then."

The 'Hot n Cold' singer also admitted that she is surprised at how quickly time has passed since the release of her last album.

She explained: "I didn't think it would happen so quick - I was getting used to nine hours of sleep and maybe eating stuff I shouldn't be eating. But they woke me up and said, 'It's time to be a popstar again' - I said this is never going to stop until I die in 2012.

"This record will probably hopefully take me on a fantastic tour and two years later I'll be ready to start a new one - there are already plans for tour dates."

So excited to hear more stuff. cool.gif

Posted by: Theo Commander 22nd June 2010, 03:23 PM

Ooh, can't wait to hear more songs! ohmy.gif Hopefully there'll be a countdown to 'Teenage Dream' on iTunes. happy.gif

In other news, Katy'll be appearing on the Graham Norton Show on the 28th/29th of June! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Aidan Gleek 22nd June 2010, 03:33 PM

I'm very excited for this, it's quite a long wait from 'California Gurls' until the album though. I'll definitely be heading to HMV straight away in the morning to buy this!

I think now she's more established and has had quite alot of hits in the last 12 months (IKAG, HAC, Starstrukk, If We Ever Meet Again, California Gurls) plus she's been in the media alot with American Idol/X Factor/Relationship with Russel Brand I can easily see this going top ten. Maybe even #1.

Someone has just posted this on Tumblr. I dont know whether its the official cover or not though...

Probably fan made as they've flipped the picture of Katy and the letters on her T-Shirt are backward kink.gif (Unless it's meant to be like that? laugh.gif)

But very good though! wub.gif

Looks fake, but I'd be quite happy if it was real. Much much better than a fake I saw on Popjustice the other day laugh.gif

Posted by: Theo Commander 20th July 2010, 04:13 PM

Doubt it's real. She tweeted this on Sunday (I think)

As already posted in this thread laugh.gif

Still, that wouldn't really stop the cover perhaps leaking, would it? unsure.gif

The official album cover is getting unveiled in under 10 minutes on www.katyperry.com ! biggrin.gif

Bit disappointing - pretty much the candyfloss bed naked scene from the "California Gurls" video sad.gif And quite similar to a cover posted on Popjustice not long ago laugh.gif

There's no text on the painting, but I assume there will be text (Katy Perry - Teenage Dream) on the actual album cover? unsure.gif

Oh, I think she just said that there won't be text on the physical album cover ohmy.gif

Probably written on the side piece at the left of the CD vertically, like on the Diana Vickers album (not the spine, I don't know what you call that bit).

Anyway, nice cover but not exactly exciting.

Will post a bigger version for people who haven't seen it when I manage to find one

No?! I never said that. It's just I've seen a lot of people say 'it's just a still from the CG vid!' when it's obviously not.

Posted by: bigzarafan 22nd July 2010, 11:30 AM

I know it's a painting that's taken ages, but it's a painting of a scene from the CG video. I was expecting something new, original. Even if this was new and not a scene from the video, it's still a bit boring, especially with no text on the front.

Posted by: Robot 22nd July 2010, 11:44 AM

The thing is (not many people will realise, so this isn't against you) - this ISN'T a painting from the California Gurls video. This is a painting by Will Cotton, and all of Will's paintings look like this.

This is a Will Cotton painting - looks exactly like a California Gurls shot, but it isn't. The whole era is inspired by Will Cotton, and Will was the artistic director for the video also.

Just thought I'd say this, because it's not actually a direct painting of a California Gurls shot - it's all inspired by an artist, who paints in this style always.

Posted by: gooddelta 22nd July 2010, 11:52 AM

Very clever cover. It seems pretty likely to me that the CD will come out with a sticker on the case saying her name and the album title, they won't just leave it on the spine as people might just walk past it in the shop not realising what it is. Even the most alternative bands who release album covers without text come with a sticker on the case saying what it is.

'Teenage Dream' Official Single Cover

Posted by: bigzarafan 22nd July 2010, 08:45 PM

Not as good as California Gurls, but sounds like a grower smile.gif

The two single covers for this era have been amazing so far, which could be what's making me disappointed with the album cover

'Teenage Dream' is so catchy wub.gif I know nearly all the words already laugh.gif

Posted by: JamesP 22nd July 2010, 09:36 PM

Posted by: Silver Rocket 22nd July 2010, 10:28 PM

I'm on my first listen and this is WAY better than 'California Girls'. Less generic, way punchier and with a lot more spunk.

Not that I have anything against 'California Gurls'.

Posted by: Jack 22nd July 2010, 10:38 PM

In f***ing love with it already!! mellow.gif Seriously, she's on FIRE this era. Fast becoming one of my fave artists, I smell another #01. wub.gif

Yeah, she does seem to be in her element. I really hope the album itself actually shows the potential she has this time, I have faith.

I've listened to it twice and already I love it, it's so much better than the rubbishy California Gurls.

Posted by: Jonjo Flowers 23rd July 2010, 03:19 AM

Amazing. wub.gif Katy very rarely disappoints. It's not her fault 'California Gurls' got old quick, but 'Teenage Dreams' sounds like it's gonna be huge and a grower too! GAH! I love her wub.gif

Posted by: Aidan 23rd July 2010, 07:06 AM

I'm already in love with it!! It's the only song I've been listening to since last night, it's just BRILLIANT!! Hopefully another #1 for her. wub.gif

Oh and the single cover is just stunning, better than the cover for 'California Gurls' imo, but looking at the two single covers makes me disappointed with the album cover.

Posted by: Bert for Lashes 23rd July 2010, 09:15 AM

On first listen it's like the biggest disappointement of the year for me ohmy.gif

I love 'California gurls' so so much so I was expecting something even bigger for 2nd single, and WTF ? ohmy.gif The chorus passed me by and I didn't even realise it was the chorus ... Not good sad.gif Hopefully it will grow on me big time, no way there's a Katy single I don't love !

Posted by: Gagafan Gibson 23rd July 2010, 09:56 AM

I am obsessed now wub.gif It won't go number 1 tho as I think the release is 23rd Aug, so it's against the certain number 1 Dynamite by Taio Cruz sad.gif Dynamite is amazing and I also hope that goes number 1 so they could remove the release back a week, as the 16th is basically dead. Rihanna is the only major release that week and she won't even go top 10 so Katy could get another number 1 if handled right!

Posted by: Dré 23rd July 2010, 02:45 PM

Well overrated here. It's nothing special imo. I did grow to love California Gurls, we'll see in a few weeks, but for now, its just a boring song.

Katy reminds me alot of Rihanna this era. Not that their music is very similar, but Rihanna's Girl Like Me was moderately successful, a bit like Katy's One Of The Boys era, yet her Good Girl Gone Bad was a complete breakthrough and made her into the huge megastar that she is today, and I reckon Teenage Dream will do the same for Katy.

That's a $h!tload better. Album covers without text only work on 'hipster' sort bands IMO.

However, still a crap cover and I wish they'd have used a new concept. I know this isn't a still from the CG video but it's an old idea.

I like the single cover for TD.

And the song itself - well, wub.gif. I don't get why Katy can't release good (IMO tongue.gif) songs as her first singles. I hated IKAG and CG, but HNC and TD are brilliant. (So is WUIV, and TOY is pretty good also)

The three promo singles prior to the album release are:

August 3 - Not Like The Movies
August 10 - Circle The Drain
August 17 - E.T

biggrin.gif

I was wondering 'Not Like The Movies' might be a cover of a Filipino artist KC Concepcion, I've lived in the Philippines for 10 years so I'm familiar with KC tongue.gif

Anyways, here it is for anyone who wants to listen tongue.gif It sounds a bit like 'The Climb' laugh.gif

If she does cover it, I reckon Katy's version would be much better wub.gif

Hopefully the UK get the iTunes countdown as well. I don't think there's been a countdown since the countdown for 'The E.N.D'. biggrin.gif

From myspace:

Katy Perry unveils ”Teenage Dream” cover art

Apparently Katy Perry’s topless photo shoot for Esquire was just a warm-up. The pop singer has unveiled the album cover for her new record, Teenage Dream, and she’s, well, not wearing a lot of clothes. Or rather, any. The pop singer lounges on a cloud of cotton candy—like in her video for “California Gurls”—and pink fluff covers about nine percent of her.

Perry revealed the cover, which is actually a painting, yesterday during a Ustream chat with her fans. Perry was joined by cover artist Will Cotton, as the two sat together in Cotton’s studio. Supposedly this chat was the first time Perry had actually seen the album art (yeah right). Her response? “Oh my God, what will my mother think? It’s so gorgeous. I’m so excited. I’m nervous. I’m shaking a bit. This will be my first piece of real art.”

Perry picked Cotton after seeing several of his paintings because she “likes all things cute.” Cotton’s painting for this record reportedly took six-and-a-half weeks to create and will be the only thing that appears on the front of the album. “I have decided for this to be just the album cover— no print, no nothing, no ‘Katy Perry,’ ” the singer said. “Hopefully they know it’s me by the actual picture.”

We’re gonna go with, yes, fans probably will. In addition, the album booklet doesn’t just look like cotton candy, it smells like it too. Seriously. Perry said, “When you purchase the CD physically, you just get a Katy Perry by Will Cotton. We went through every detail — it even smells like cotton candy! It actually stinks.”

Perry and Cotton apparently may also be collaborating on her upcoming tour in support of Teenage Dream, likely in the spring. Perry confirmed she will be playing a lot of shows this fall and winter too and that her new music video, for her second single, “Teenage Dream,” will likely be out the first week of August. “It’s going to be beautiful and will be so different than the Candyfornia video,” she said. “Which is fantastic, but I love going from one extreme to the other.”

Does that mean she will be clothed in it?

All of Katy's singles have been fantastic imo Bray tongue.gif Even her two guest appearances. But I agree with you that the second releases tend to be FAR stronger than the first. IKAG and CG whilst brilliant pop tunes are just too gimmicky and are trying to cause controversy or fit a trend.

Teenage Dream is my new addiction <3 Everyone goes on and on about Gaga and whilst Katy may not have had as massive success she too has been pretty consistant with an arson of cracking pop tunes.

I'm predicting the album will get to #1 everywhere but I'm not sure on sales. OOTB didn't even make the top 10 here and sold 400k I believe.

Posted by: GrAmii 25th July 2010, 05:09 PM

P.S People keep saying that the single's major competition here is Dynamite. Does anybody else think that song rips off Tik Tok & Sexy Bitch? :S

Posted by: Jark 25th July 2010, 05:26 PM

Dynamite is a Taio Cruz song. It's only natural that it would sound exactly like every other hit song of the past 12 months. Yawn.

It's a good song but the lyrics sound like they were written by a five year old and the production sounds generic as anything.

Katy Perry breaks US radio record

By Robert Copsey, Music Reporter

Katy Perry has broken a US radio record for her new single 'Teenage Dream'.

The song, which is also the title of Perry's sophomore album, has been added to 87 radio stations over the course of a week - the highest number of adds for a song ever.

The track was released on Monday to US iTunes and has soared to number three, two places ahead of her last single 'California Gurls'.

Her debut album One Of The Boys is also on course to return to the US album chart after rising to number five on iTunes.

Last month, Katy Perry broke the US airplay record after 'California Gurls' received 11,816 plays in a week - an everage of 90 plays per radio station.

Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) - 8 (skinny dipping and menage trois kink.gif) Katy getting a bit naughty tongue.gif
Fireworks - 7 (the violin bit sounds like the one in All Time Low tongue.gif)
Peacock - 8 (If U Seek Amy Pt. II) but much better and less naughty in a way.
Circle The Drain - 7 (she swore ohmy.gif I love it haha)
The One That Got Away - 5 (not keen on it yet, may grow once the whole song is out)
E.T. - 8 (I'm liking this one biggrin.gif)

Pearl - 6 (wierd LOL)
Hummingbird Heartbeat - 9 (OMG I love this wub.gif)
Not Like The Movies - 7 (good ballad smile.gif)

Overall, I'll give it an 8 but thats just the previews... I'm definitely buying this album wub.gif

HDD: Katy Perry's new album to surpass Eminem’s Recovery?

I.B. BAD CHECKS OUT POP’S GOLDEN GIRL

As It Turns Out, Katy Perry Is Far More Than Just a Pretty Face

Based on early prognostications from industry sources, pre-order sales of Katy's new album "Teenage Dream" are huge!

Here's what most famous sales tracking site Hits Daily Double has to say:

Much has been written, here and elsewhere, about the brain trust surrounding Katy Perry, including EMI executives Greg Thompson and Angelica Cob Baehler; the management team of Martin Kirkup, Steve Jensen and Bradford Cobb; recently departed A&R man Chris Anokute; and writer/producers Dr. Luke and Max Martin. What hasn’t been widely discussed is that Perry is a fiercely intelligent young artist who is firmly in control of every aspect of her career, from her music—in which she plays a primary songwriting role, decides who she collaborates with and who produces—to her carefully calibrated imaging. In terms of doing things her own way, it’s hard to imagine any other pop diva going out on the Warped Tour, as Perry did in 2008. Thus far, her decision-making has been virtually flawless, resulting in wall-to-wall media visibility and massive anticipation for Teenage Dream, streeting Aug. 24 on Capitol/EMI. Meanwhile, the just-released title track poised to follow “California Gurls” (which hit 3m this week) to the top of the sales and airplay charts.Prognosticators are divided on whether Perry’s album will surpass Eminem’s Recovery, which bowed at 754k, to become the year’s biggest debut. Doubters feel the release date is problematic in the sense that it falls at a time when Americans are traditionally preoccupied with end-of-summer and back-to-school activities, with mass entertainment far down their priority lists…Not surprisingly, Perry’s current contract is being renegotiated, with respected attorney Jay Cooper in the process of doing a mega-deal for her…

PS - Where can I find the album clips?

Posted by: Jark 3rd August 2010, 05:28 PM

Realistically I don't think it has any chance but it might get 350k or so which would be massive in itself, especially for Summer.

I think 1st week sales of ~500k for her sophomore album seems possible, and the fact that they waited to release the album off the 2nd single release makes more sense than OOTB's release barely a month after IKAG was out. They are building the hype much better this time around.

In the US of course. Her second single is shaping up to be as big as CG and the momentum surrounding her seems to be rolling. I think 500k is on the very high end (with excellent promo) though and I wouldn't be surprised if it's 350-400k. Unfortunately for OOTB, it was released in June 2008 in the US, when it seemed she could be a one-hit wonder and was relatively new. 1st week sales were ~90-100k, but the album consistently sold well enough to reach near 1.5 million copies in total.

circle the drain is now on usa itunes i like it very different biggrin.gif

Posted by: MrBuffay 10th August 2010, 07:47 AM

That performance was brilliant, got goosebumps when she sang 'Ima get your heart racing in my skin tight jeans...', just amazing! wub.gif

Oh, and I'm now officially a KP loon biggrin.gif

Circle The Drain is crap but oh well. It was the one clip I didn't like.

Posted by: L!am 10th August 2010, 03:47 PM

Circle The Drain = The track of the album i will always skip unfortunately.

Posted by: Chriss_S 10th August 2010, 03:52 PM

Are they releasing an album track in the US every week until the album's released or something? unsure.gif

Posted by: SceneofSIXCrimes 10th August 2010, 04:06 PM

Here is the official 'Teenage Dream' video:

http://www.styleinsider.riverisland.com/blog/katyperry:teenagedreamexclusive?utm_source=eshot&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=esw87&_ccCt=rDNL8hFPPhXHnHGZ3q_SHVu51KO4EDaZ6xc0pjMQelX5TJABYB8mibwLyIPrvAUd

It's only available exclusively for 24 hours and then it will be taken down.

I can't view it for some reason though. It's just not playing. sad.gif

Probably.
Few Artists release 'promo' singles every week until album to build hype.
You're more likely to take up the complete the album offer on iTunes too come the release. happy.gif

Stop being a drama queen, Robot. tongue.gif

It should be fixed soon. After all, they said that we can view it.

HOW DARE THEY EXPERIENCE ISSUES?

*Bitch-slaps* happy.gif

I think 'Teenage Dream' will be the album of 2010! 'Teenage Dream', 'California Gurls', 'Not Like the Movies' and 'E.T. (Futuristic Lover)' are all brilliant. 'Peacock' sounds interesting but i'm not keen on 'Circle the Drain'.

Posted by: Theo. 10th August 2010, 04:27 PM

It's up! cheer.gif

EDIT: It's alright, nothing spectacular - I was expecting a lot more. sad.gif It does the job though - and I love the final scene as the party kinda thing. smile.gif

Posted by: Jamieed 10th August 2010, 04:35 PM

Good happy.gif.
Thought it was mainly going to be on the beach but there's more too it.
Even with the extra scenes it feels like something's missing?!

Such a great summer song none the less. music.gif

Posted by: Chriss_S 10th August 2010, 04:36 PM

I like the video happy.gif Its a bit racy at times, but there's nothing wrong with that. tongue.gif I really love the beginning when she's in the car, and the bit at the end wub.gif

Posted by: Tyler 10th August 2010, 04:37 PM

The video is nice, I like it.

I REALLY like "Circle The Drain". Definitely not as commercial as any of the other songs we've got, but I love it the most after ET.

Posted by: MrBuffay 10th August 2010, 04:42 PM

I really like the video, a few hot scenes between her and that hot guy, but I'm not complaining. kink.gif I love the scene in the beginning, I can just imagine being in a car with that song loud on the radio and the car going very fast. wub.gif

Posted by: Robot 10th August 2010, 04:52 PM

I HATE THAT MAN. I'M SO SO SO SO JEALOUS. On the other hand, superb video - not visually amazing, however it is really gorgeous - I love the story, how young, sweet and innocent she looks watching as he boxes - and the party scene at the end is amazing.

AND TO TOP IT ALL, SHE LOOKS GORGEOUS.

Posted by: Steven. 10th August 2010, 05:00 PM

I love the video! Nothing 'f***ING AMAZING', but its really nice and suits the whole 'Late summer' feel to the song, so I'm happy! smile.gif

'Circle The Drain' is amazing! I don't get the hate! I love it biggrin.gif

Posted by: SceneofSIXCrimes 10th August 2010, 05:00 PM

I love it!

As previously said, it's not visually amazing but it tells the story and it connects with the song.

I love Katy even more after that. She's asking for it in that video!

Posted by: Brooke_x 10th August 2010, 07:45 PM

The longer they can keep it from leaking, the more it will sell. I'm pretty sure that it will have leaked by later this week, with it being shipped to stores and stuff.

I seriously can't wait to buy the album, 2 weeks is too long to wait... sad.gif

Posted by: OddOne 15th August 2010, 11:13 AM

Hmmm... I really can't get into 'Circle The Drain'... way too much auto-tune for such an able singer.

However... 'Firework' screams "hit single!" right from the off with is huge strings and massive production that strangley manages to sound very 80's, 90's AND 00's too. Can't wait for that, much better than the suggestive and rather lukewarm 'Peacock'.

Posted by: Jonjo 17th August 2010, 11:53 PM

From the songs we've hear so far this era I would rank them...

01. 'Teenage Dream'
02. 'E.T.' (Polished version)
-------
03. 'California Gurls'
-------
04. 'Not Like The Movies'
-------
05. 'Circle The Drain'

I get the feeling NLTM and CTD are the two worst on the album... I'm gonna give the clips a listen too in a min too.

Posted by: Chriss_S 18th August 2010, 12:04 AM

For Me:

01| E.T. 10

05| Not Like The Movies 8

My rate for 'Teenage Dream'

Teenage Dream = 11 [My favourite song from the entire album, its perfection. Lyrically and musically I love it, Definitely in my Top 5 songs of the year.]

Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) = 9 [Very catchy, my favourite line has to be the cheeky ‘and then had a ménage trios, I love Katy’s cheeky side.]

California Gurls = 10 [Amazing first single, deserved the success it got and with the amazing video it just makes it a sweet package.]

Firework = 7 [The violin sounds like the intro of ‘Untouched’ and similar to ‘All Time Low’, its an ok song, favourite line ‘after a hurricane comes a rainbow.]

Peacock = 7 [Another cheeky Katy Perry song, its like If U Seek Amy Pt. II, but this one really sings what she wants lol, I love the sound but I feel that there’s something missing, still its good.]

Circle The Drain = 8 [It sounds like something but I just can’t put my finger on what, Its rockstar Katy lol, I’m starting to like this song, I think its lyrically good like most of the songs.]

The One That Got Away = 7 [The beginning sounds like ‘I Kissed A Girl’, I like the meaning behind the song, its very cute haha.]

E.T. = 9 [First time I heard it I liked it immediately, very catchy and should definitely be a single.]

Who Am I Living For? = 6 [Not keen on this song yet, sounds like shouting during the chorus lol.]

Pearl = 7 [Ok song, I love the melody of the song.]

Hummingbird Heartbeat = 9 [I loved the preview of the song and it definitely lives up to the full song, the‘virginity bit in the beginning made me lol, one of the standouts in the album.]

Not Like The Movies = 7 [The only soft ballad in the album, sounds good, and you can feel her emotion in the song, ok song IMO.]

Very good on first listen but so many 9s and 10s being thrown around in this thread for so far for the majority of songs in every rate made me think it would be a lot better than I actually found it. Lots of generous Katy fans in here! My first listen rate;

9.0 Teenage Dream
9.0 Last Friday Night
10.0 California Gurls
9.0 Firework
8.5 Peacock
7.0 Circle The Drain
8.5 The One That Got Away
8.5 E.T
7.0 Who Am I Living For?
8.0 Pearl
8.5 Hummingbird Heartbeat
8.5 Not Like the Movies

The first half is massively better than the second, which is still good. A couple of fillers though. We'll see how it holds up on repeated listens.

Been listening to this on repeat all evening, here's my full review:

10.0 Teenage Dream: By far my favourite song by her ever, somehow it's very emotional, it has that Late Summer favourite tv shows, walking on the beach in the sunset, graduation esque vibe to it, the chord sequence is incredibly simple yet it works.

09.0 Last Friday Night: Like the whole album campaign so far it's so effortless, so light, the saxophone is amazingly 90's and should be used in pop songs for often, it's missing that spark to make it amazing but another fresh Dr Luke/Max Martin production.

09.0 California Girls: One of the best tracks of the year, ever so overplayed now though, Snoop Doggs middle eight is a welcome addition rather than grating.

08.5 Firework: When i saw Stargate on the production credits i imagined with this being an uptempo it would something as generic as 'Beautiful Monster' but it's production is spot on, can never go wrong with Strings, the only thing that brings it down is the vocals which would be piercingly painful to listen to live.

03.0 Peacock: The album would be so much better without this dragging it down, and somehow what should be an energetic fun though ridiculous song comes across completely lifeless and is completely out of place.

09.0 Circle The Drain: Brilliant lyrics, it's really nice to hear her doing something a bit different rather, it doesn't feel forced, and it's surprsingly catchy.

08.5 The One That Got Away: It's all very sweet light pop again isn't it, rather odd choice having this straight after CTD, it's a decent song though, the production needed some more welly though.

08.5 E.T: Really wasn't a fan of this at first, it seemed like the weakest Dr Luke/Max Martin collaboration a while but it hasn't half grown on me today, it somehow despite being out of place sounds better in context listening to the album, catchychorus, big stomping beat, biggest grower.

06.0 Who Am I Living For?: Nothing special to be honest, it drags on somewhat though lyrically it's decent enough.

08.5 Pearl: Love how this builds up, it plods along nicely, one of the unexpectedly decent tracks on the album.

09.0 Hummingbird Heartbeat: A real 80's Don Henley, summer fading graduation vibe on this just like 'Teenage Dream' again, it's not as good as TD but its a lovely song and a future single.

08.0 Not Like the Movies: It's all very disney sounding, a pleasant ending to the album, there's no wow factor whatsoever but its nice enough.

Overall: A decent followup indeed, so many potential single choices are left and nice to see Stargate and Max Martin/Dr Luke changing up their game a bit to.

Posted by: OddOne 18th August 2010, 09:21 PM

Hmm... can't say there's too many outstanding songs on this album for me. Considering the hype, I feel many people are just lost in anticipation, when you strip back the fact it's Katy and we all love her.. it's very much a solid sophomore effort but very little new ground has been covered, and occasionally that ground, well, it's covered in dog $h!t.

'Teenage Dream'. Brilliant. Should've been the first single, it shows Katy's non-auto-tuned voice off to it's maximum, returning her to her pop/rock roots. I hugely appelaing song many can relate to. With a massive chorus and more hooks than backstage at London fashion week, this is a bonefide summer anthem.

'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)', well it's pleasing enough, loses a bit of the Katy charm we hear on 'Teenage Dream', but none-the-less, in definitely not a filler, more a pleasant, 'Bridge The Gap' to other songs; it's decent enough but nothing to write home about.

'California Gurls' sounds so forced she makes fun look as laborious as listening to paint dry. It's fun and party party party and all but, it just doesn't do much for me, not very credible, which is annoying seeing as it's Katy. Snoop Dogg can go shove it as well, he's not needed in the song at all.

'Firework', is pure, unabashed brilliance. Euphoric, eclectic, filled to the brim with hooks (both musical and vocal), it soars through a monolithic production with one of Katy's biggest vocal performances to date. Loving the strings, the stomping chorus and the fact it's the next single. Very good choice.

'Peacock'. Katy's rather suggestive 'Peacock' seems fun enough, with plenty of innuendos and controversy but unfortunately, it's about as useful as a condom machine in a monastery: it does nothing for the album and is so relentlessly unforgiving it just comes across as an offensive filler.

'Circle The Drain' Interesting concept but sorry Tyler, this is tragic. Katy may don a super-sexy alpha-female character but the profanity is unecessary - as it is on all pop records - and the over-use of auto-tune runs what the song had going for it straight into the ground.

'The One That Got Away' is one of the few love songs on this album that come across as properly heartfelt and credible. Only one quip with this song - the drums could be a little less militant, but otherwise, the chorus is perfect and Katy's vocals carry the emotion fantastically thanks the the lack of auto-tune.

E.T. (Futuristic Lover) is a puzzling one. Everyone hails it as the best thing since viagra but really? It's a very middle-of-the-road song with dreary verses and a chorus that, two seconds in, sounds amazing, then after the retriggering on Katy's vocals, it falls flat on it's face really. Monotonously sung (obviously to capture the song itself) but it just goes nowhere, and the most annyoing thing is, there's about 20 places in the song where it sounds like it's finally going to give that OOPMH, but it doesn't.

'Who Am I Living For?' is another obvious filler. Where is the chorus? It goes straight into it without so much as an extra guitar or synth. It's incredibly dull. Can't fault Katy's vocal's on this though, but it does sound like she's over-singing y'know? Like she knows the backing is so weak she's relying on her voice to inject some life into it? 'Flogging', 'Horse' and 'Dead' are three words that spring to mind.

'Pearl' is another peculiar one. The lyrics shine out as far more sophisticated than any other song on the album. It's a well-constructed ballad, but it doesn't have... that something... It relies on the (quite frankly) stunning lyrics and Katy's vocal performance to carry it's baggage. It lacks any memorable hook, and the backing could very easily go with any of the other fillers on the album. That aside, Katy's vocals actually do carry the song very well; this is easily one of the more listenable ballads.

'Hummingbird Heartbeat' has only one fault - it's Track 11. A track this bombastic and confident should be right up there with the likes of 'Teenage Dream', 'California Gurls', and 'Firework', and 'Last Friday Night T.G.I.F.' should be relegated to penultimate position. Rocky guitar, sweet lyrics.. it shouldn't work but it does... this is easily one the album's very few tracks to literally shout home about.

'Not Like The Movies' certainly earns it's place as the album's closer. Another heartfelt ballad, it's very wishy-washy and has some flawlessly beautiful lyrics, but we've now heard it all before - and not just elsewhere in pop music: elsewhere on this very album.

From an album that's had so much hype, it rarely manages to deliver the goods, well, to these ears anyway, and I'm no music snob I'll tell you now. It just feels like only a third of the album tracks are really credible and even fewer could make it as hit singles. Katy's already released two of those, and she's eyeing up the third, there's really only one or two more tracks she can milk from an album that's so unfortunately average. She's hasn't advanced forward, 'Teenage Dream' feels like 'One Of The Boys 2.0'; she rarely tries something new - sure she's made a few electropop stompers and that's all god and up-to-date and all but, now that everyone's doing electropop, she needs to add her own stamp to all of the tracks, and a few innuendos and naughty words isn't going to cut the mustard.

My Album rating: 6.7/10

Posted by: J-o-e 18th August 2010, 10:29 PM

What a $h!t album, one of the boys was pretty good but I honestly cant stand this bar teenage dreams and E.T theres not a song that catches my attention.

OddOne you are crazy. Who Am I Living For? is the new greatest thing she's ever done. It's mesmerising. The whole album is spectacular. There's only one semi-filler (Peacock) which is still pretty good. The rest is the tits. Amazing production especially. Songs full of personality. New greatest popstar of the decade right here.

After listing to the album ALL day in between classes. Here is my score.

(08) Teenage Dream
(09) Last Friday Night
(10) California Gurls
(11) Firework
(10) Peacock
(10) Circle The Drain
(09) The One That Got Away
(11) E.T
(09) Who Am I Living For?
(09) Pearl
(09) Hummingbird Heartbeat
(07) Not Like the Movies

Firework and ET are PERFECT. Best songs I've heard in more then a year!

This is seriously my favorite album of all time after 'Blackout'. love.gif

Not Like The Movies is like the "Why Should I Be Sad" of this album. But it is still a good song. Not ONE filler, imo.

Posted by: OddOne 19th August 2010, 05:53 AM

No Jark I am not crazy. 'Who Am I Living For?' is not the new greatest things she's ever done. It's not mesmerising. The whole album is not spectacular. There's more than one complete filler on the album and yes 'Peacock' is one of them. The rest is not the tits. Production is only good on the songs that shine out. Definitely not the new greatest popstar of the decade right here.

Take a minute to think how arrogant I sound in the paragraph above. Well you sounded arrogant to me so I just retaliated similarly: no evidence, just opinion as fact.

Now think about how everything I said in that first paragraph can actually be completely true: music is completely subjective Jark, and that was my opinioin, but I don't go around preaching like it's God's will. My point is, in my opinion, there's not one outstanding track on the album after 'Teenage Dream' and 'Firework', 'Hummingbird Heartbeat' and 'The One That Got Away' come close, and they'd both make great singles Slowpoke, but everything else could've been written by a five year old ("I wanna see you peacock-cock-cock") or is just incredibly dull and has nothing besides Katy's voice going for it ('Who Am I Living For?')

The album has it's plus points, as does each song, but only rarely do all the plus points needed for a good pop song come together in one song: what some songs succeed in, others fail in; hooks; emotion; catchiness etc, etc. Only few songs have it all. I'm in agreement with J-o-e to some extent, nothing really jumps out and says "Don't change the track! Listen to me in full!" except for tracks 1 and 4.

So don't call me crazy, although I could be really arrogant now and say I'd expect it from you as your obviously a fan of Christina.

And to conclude... I'd rather go and download track 1 and 4 singularly rather than buy the whole album, and that's the test of a good album for me - whether I'll download the whole thing. The only album I've downloaded wholly in the past two years is the quite frankly AMAZING (in SO many ways) 'The Illusion Of Safety' by The Hoosiers.

Now THAT was an album that I was glad to see didn't leak. It's got ten or more outstanding songs, compared to Katy's two. Well done everybody.

I'm struggling to get into the fan favourites - E.T. and Hummingbird Heartbeat, as much as I probably should. Other songs are growing though, notably Firework and The One That Got Away. I personally still prefer One Of The Boys though. Updated rate;

9.0 Teenage Dream
9.5 Last Friday Night
10.0 California Gurls
9.0 Firework
7.5 Peacock
7.0 Circle The Drain
9.0 The One That Got Away
8.0 E.T
7.0 Who Am I Living For?
8.0 Pearl
8.0 Hummingbird Heartbeat
8.5 Not Like the Movies

LOVING Last Friday Night though, works very well and is simple yet catchy, with nods to the 90's pop she was talking about this album being influenced by. I can only see the first four tracks and The One That Got Away going down as songs I'll play over and over again though, joining I Kissed A Girl, Hot 'N' Cold, Thinking Of You, One Of The Boys, Self Inflicted and If We Ever Meet Again.

10 Circle The Drain
09 The One That Got Way
10 E.T.
08 What Am I Living For?

On a rank

01 Firework
02 Teenage Dream
03 Last Friday Night
04 ET
05 California Gurls
06 Hummingbird Heartbeat
07 Circle The Drain
08 Peacock
09 The One That Got Away
10 Not Like The Movies

Posted by: Slowpoke 19th August 2010, 03:31 PM

I've decided I hate this album because of how many songs are single worthy. Let's be honest, with most albums, there are the obvious 3 or 4 tracks that are going to be singles. But with this, I've decided:

'Firework'
'Peacock'
'Last Friday Night'
'The One That Got Away'
'E.T'
'Hummingbird Heartbeat'

would all do great as singles. I suppose it could be another "Good Girl Gone Bad" / "I Am...Sasha Fierce". tongue.gif

Posted by: BJBB Steve 19th August 2010, 03:34 PM

I really hope Peacock isn't a single, it sucks. Depending on when I rate it could be as low as a 5 ohmy.gif

Posted by: Slowpoke 19th August 2010, 03:37 PM

I love the production and attitude in the song. You can tell she had a lot of fun writing and recording it. tongue.gif

Posted by: eJackulate 19th August 2010, 03:41 PM

I do like "Peacock", but I don't think it would work as a single. With a song with swearing in it, it can just be censored. But if you try and censor "Peacock", aren't you removing the main line? Would radio be allowed to play a song with the line I want to see your peacock? unsure.gif

*Using spoiler tags as I know some people are waiting for release, and I don't know if they want the line spoiling for them or not

'peacock' is amazing. yes, it's VERY cheeky and full of innuendos, but still, it reminds me of rihanna's 'rude boy' in a way.
'firework' appears to be very overrated however. sleep.gif

Every song on this album is either a 9 or a 10 now. idgaf.

Posted by: Ashley 19th August 2010, 05:47 PM

This album is terrible. I was looking forward to it after California Gurls as well. My fave is TGIF. Everything else sounds so half baked and like something a child would put together. Firework would be ok if her vocals weren't so ghastly.

I suppose it could be another "Good Girl Gone Bad" / "I Am...Sasha Fierce". tongue.gif

Difference being this is 10x better than Sasha Fierce, and only some of them were single worthy but she decided to bung out earrapes such as 'Ego', 'If I Were A Boy', 'Videophone' and 'Diva' anyway kink.gif.

Posted by: Jonjo 19th August 2010, 05:58 PM

'If I Were A Boy' is anything but "ear rape" Mr Tatton pirate.gif

Anyway, I got the link, downloaded, listened to half of it, but was tired and I'm busy today so haven't got round to listening to it properly in full yet so will do tomorrow afternoon, maybe? tongue.gif

Posted by: Jack 19th August 2010, 06:00 PM

Yes it is, her vocals and lyrics are f***ing DIRE.

ANYWAY I am in love with this album, 'Peacock' is the highlight and totally get the 'Rude Boy' comparisons as well.

I wasn't comparing the albums. I meant it in the way that those two albums were completely milked for singles. biggrin.gif

Peacock is awful. Calling a penis a peacock is hardly subtle inuendo. It's like something a child would find funny.

Posted by: Scherz 20th August 2010, 09:55 AM

If Peacock is released as a single, radio would not touch it. Rude Boy may have been full of innuendos but Katy actually says Peacock cock cock and there's no way around editing that for radio without making it sound ridiculous.

You never know, they managed to edit Lily Allen's "f*** you, f*** you very much" by "Thank you, thank you very much" or, even worse, "[animal noise] you, [animal noise] you very much". So actually editing "Peacock" would be rather simple in comparaison laugh.gif

LOL no, I didn't say it wouldn't be simple.. I said it would sound silly.
Unless Katy recorded a cleaner version, however they edited it - it would sound silly.

Hummingbird Heartbeat! wub.gif

Posted by: Eric_Blob 20th August 2010, 10:05 PM

They censored Dirty Picture (by replacing "Take a dirty picture" with "Take a, take a ditty picture"), so I'm sure they could work something out with Peacock. laugh.gif

well that was only with Ke$ha's lines and even Radio 1 reverted back to the original version at some points.

Posted by: Tyron 21st August 2010, 03:11 AM

Why are we even DISCUSSING the need for Peacock to have a radio edit? There's no sense in Katy releasing what so many artists do far better. But then, I DID say that about California Gurls so...yeah. Still, why go through the headache of releasing something like that when there's so much better on offer? Firework is the obvious third single, I reckon.

I like this album. It's a solid album, very little obvious filler but very little which screams out 'AMAZING, HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR' aside from Teenage Dream, or, at a stretch, Firework and Hummingbird Heartbeat. I can sense this is going to be one of those albums that I enjoy but won't be able to stand in about three months due to the mindless overblown stanning over it, which is already putting me off the album a little bit. Frankly, a good pop album with no obvious awful tracks makes a great popstar. It doesn't make the popstar of the decade or the album of the year.

Thank goodness 'Firework' is the next single. It sounds so epic, and the video should be a blast. They should follow it with:

ET
Last Friday Night (TGIF)

So how many albums have you heard in your life-time? To be able to say this is your favourite ever, just a few days after it leaked blink.gif

In russian 'peacock' also means penis too but it's disappearing from speech laugh.gif

anyways, Peacock is AWFUL. Oh DEAR. So far only Teenage Dream, E.T. is 9/10 and Firework is 9.5/10. The rest is 6.5/10 and worse.

Listenable album with three obvious highlights.

Exactly. Other than California Gurls, Teenage Dream and TGIF, the rest of the album is BORING. The melodies are forgetable and the lyrics are cliché after cliché. And the production on this sounds like she didn't know whether to be Ke$ha or Kelly Clarkson, and has fallen into some lame-o sound inbetween where the guitars sound like they're being played on a keyboard.

Posted by: nicola37 21st August 2010, 05:33 PM

Noticed that the UK has a more censored version of Teenage Dream video out. Not as many hot scenes with Katy and the guy. Shame!

I haven't listened to all the songs yet, managed to resist but I ADORE E.T wub.gif

Only in your crazy little world.

Posted by: Steve D 21st August 2010, 06:59 PM

it is the best news as it's one of the stronger tracks on the album.

Posted by: Steven. 21st August 2010, 08:51 PM

I love 'Firework' biggrin.gif Thats great news! 'The One That Got Away' / 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)' / 'Pearl' / 'Peacock'. One or more of them should be singles too though!

I really love 'Hummingbird Heartbeat' wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif the first sentence she says shocked me when I first heard it laugh.gif I even kept teasing my friend about it haha

Posted by: Doug 21st August 2010, 09:26 PM

I honestly don't get it though. it's so dull. from the intro it's quite promising, until the strings kick in and then it just makes me bored.

Posted by: Arrs 22nd August 2010, 11:15 AM

I have had a listen on the album finally, I'm surprised to be honest! ohmy.gif 'One of the Boys' was quite weak while this one is SO MUCH better! From the album tracks I instantly remembered peacock. tongue.gif Will give the rate etc. later when listen to the album several times.

'Firework' intro and verse build and build but the chorus is just overly shout.

There's something about 'Fireworks' that I don't like but I can't put my finger on what it is thinking.gif

I'd prefer if 'E.T' or 'Hummingbird Heartbeat' was the third single.

Posted by: Slowpoke 22nd August 2010, 11:59 PM

E.T, HH, Peacock, LFN, TOTGA are all superior single choices, imo.

Posted by: Slowpoke 23rd August 2010, 12:00 AM

(11) Teenage Dream
(10) Last Friday Night
(10) California Gurls
(08) Firework
(09) Peacock
(05) Circle The Drain
(09) The One That Got Away
(10) E.T
(06) Who Am I Living For?
(07) Pearl
(09) Hummingbird Heartbeat
(07) Not Like the Movies

My revised rate.

E.T for fourth single! It can't just stay as an album track, its just too good to not get released. wub.gif

Last Friday Night should be single #4

imo. smile.gif

4th Firework
