Race for hosting rights is hotting up!! I’d quite like Maastricht to get it personally. I’d just stay in western NRW in a nice hotel for half the price people are staying in the city for. And I’m looking for any excuse to visit that part of the world tbh
It has been such a long time that The Netherlands hosted, I can only assume that after much fuss and hype that lasts for the whole summer it will just end up in Amsterdam as expected.
Is it worth booking a refundable hotel now in Amsterdam for the middle weekend in May 2020, with the assumption the final will be on the 16th?
I'm really not convinced it will be Amsterdam, it's already overwhelmed with tourists and I've heard that the government wants to promote other cities. I'm hoping the love is shared around a bit, what with Amsterdam hosting a few Euro 2020 matches next June, and that they give it to Rotterdam (also have some personal bias as I want to be able to tick a new city off the list rather than visit one that I only went to for the first time last month )
Realistically next year is the first year since 2016 that I will be around to go (even though I didn't end up going that year ) as I'm usually away most of May for work for tradeshows but my usual work events are in March and June next year instead.
So I'm also hoping it's not Amsterdam, as I've been there before too. Maybe it's too early to provisionally book a hotel then, although I guess Amsterdam and Rotterdam aren't exactly far away from each other by train anyway.
yes please, do Rotterdam!!!
I am not 100% sure yet but I actually might attend Eurovision for the first time in my life
Right now in the running:
Amsterdam
Rotterdam
Maastericht
Utrecht ( <3 )
North Brabant (Den Bosch, Tilburg, Eindhoven as a combined effort)
Thought it was time to split host city discussion into a fresh green room thread!!
As well as a debate about where to host it, dates have to be decided. The final is expected to be either the 16th or the 23rd May - a week later is the UEFA Champions League final, and having it a week earlier would mean that semi-finals (live + the jury rehearsals) clash with Remembrance and Liberation Day in the Netherlands.
The expected dates for the F1 in Zandvoort is either 1-3 may or 8-10, So i fully expect a 23rd of may final
Amsterdam aren’t going to host!
Tbh The Netherlands is so small it probably won't even matter where they host it, you can get there by train.
It'll probably be Rotterdam though. That'll give the most benefit to a dutch region, whereas Maastricht will have limited benefit cause of belgium and Germany.
I don't think the others are considered much of an option (Utrecht, Den Bosch and Arnhem
EBU has already preferred Maastricht apparantly. What a mess since the bidding is until the 11th of july. They like the symbolism of Maastricht with the treaty of Maastricht. Sounds a bit shady to me lmao
I’m rooting for Maastricht personally. I’m from just over the border and a chance to spend more time in that part of Germany is one I wouldn’t want to pass up
Maastricht and Rotterdam left in the running to host Eurovision 2020
I'm hoping for Rotterdam because I really like the idea of being able to go to Eurovision 2020 on a direct train from London.
The Maastricht bid looks really fancy from what I've seen (I don't know if the details are public), I'd love it there for a multitude of reasons, not least the same reason as Suede's , I know it's the Dutch contest but if 2020 is a big European year (what with the football being everywhere) then Maastricht would be the perfect symbolic choice for Eurovision.
Nothing wrong with Rotterdam though and I reckon that'll be the final one as from what I've gathered it seems like the Dutch prefer it.
I love it when Eurovision winners collab
oh my god.
iconic!! This is truly something I didn't know I needed until now.
Duncan Laurence has been spotted with a TV crew in Maastricht today...
Rumour is that it is gonna be M-Town. I’m searching for hotels over the border in Germany with free cancelation
It'll be revealed on the 30th of august!
This friday at 11:58 Dutch time, we'll know!!!
The Web team have pressed the "go live" button too early - it's https://twitter.com/leowltrs/status/1166754865177137160!
Booooooooooo
Was backing Maastricht. Can now cancel that hotel booking in Germany for Eurovish
That's just so basic of an error
UNLESS, it's so basic that they're double bluffing us.
All due respect, I don't think they're smart enough to pull this much of a fast one on people!
Yaaaaaas
Lmao it says maastricht 2020 on the web page now. Probably damage control
12th, 14th & 16th May
Got so excited watching that video even if I was 99% sure of what the outcome would be at the end
Here we here we here we f***ing go *. *
The correct decision!
Not really relevant to 2020, there's just nowhere else relevant to put it.
I was in Austria on a work trip yesterday and in the taxi the Radio 1 equivalent national radio station was just casually playing Euphoria in amongst other current songs and hits from the last few years.
Oh to live in a country where Eurovision entries aren't blacklisted by radio!
I guess it was a proper mega hit in Austria mind, but I can't imagine hearing it on any major UK radio station now...
Funnily, I'm in Sweden this weekend for a friend's wedding. We put on the radio in our AirBnB and Victor Crone came up with 'Storm'.
Now I know Sweden is mad for it and Victor is Swedish himself, but I didn't expect a low-ranking Eurovision hit from Estonia to still be on the radio 4 months after the Final!
Jon Ola Sand will be stepping down as Executive Supervisor after Rotterdam.
He had a good run, he'll have been with us for more contests than Svante was so I feel as if this is the right time to hand over the reigns. I just hope they don't go super predictable and choose Christer Björkman to take over - the other suggestion I've seen is Sietse Bakker who is Executive Producer for the 2020 contest (as Jon Ola was in 2010 before taking up the Supervisor role the year after) and was previously Executive Supervisor for the Junior contest for a couple of years.
I seem to recall an interview a few years ago where Christer said he wouldn't like the top job as its 'boring'. But things change and with his Melfest retirement around the corner who knows.
Yeah, and even more recently he's said that he's busy sorting out the American version of the contest....but who knows, I think it's a different matter when there's actually a vacancy going
What a greatest hits megamix this is *.*
i bet the theme or logo will have something to do with VISION. it seems too obvious of a reference to miss out on
Slogan is “Open Up”!
finally a eurovision song contest that's targeting tops
It’s being reported that Montenegro are out due to financial constraints
The broadcaster has confirmed it! Shame to see anyone go but they didn't really bring the goods ever oops
I feel like it'll do them well to sit out for a while. Hoping they do a Bulgaria and comeback with QUALITY.
Shit. Always my favourite underdog.
Oh nooo, I loved Montenegro. </3
(not their last entry tho)
41 countries confirmed for May 12, 14 & 16.
I hope Hungary haven't thrown their toys out of the pram like Turkey and will be back next year.
GOOD RIDDANCE. They haven't sent anything worthy of regular rotation since Kati Wolf.
Omg we love the new Big Brother UK eye!
(Seriously though, that’s awful!)
Concept is great and I’ll remember it so I’m cool.
Love the thought put into it and think it goes well with the slogan so I think it’s a job well done. Bravo!
I really like it, looks nice and simple. A logo with a cool concept and a lot of history behind it. Sticks out from the previous years logos, which starts to kinda blend in. The logos from 2015, 2016 and 2019 were basically the same.
Oooh, I love that!
The 3 presenters have been announced
Jan Smit has been the Dutch commentator since 2011
Chantal Jansen won best presenter of 2019 recently
Edsilia Rombley of Eurovision fame
Yass Edsilia!! Truly robbed in '07
No luck for me getting tickets today - this year they didn't give any queue numbers, so you just had a generic "Waiting in queue" page until it changed to sold out. But I've been to all of them live from Stockholm '16 to Tel Aviv, so I don't mind missing out this time
For both Kiev and Lisbon I was able to get my tickets by logging on the website about 1am the morning after they went on sale and picking up some returns from earlier in the day, so still possible - and I think every year tickets for even the live Grand Final have gone back on sale just before the show!
The story of a Saturday night during National Final season.
6PM, excited for another night of national final excellence, bopping along to your favourite.
7PM, willing along your favourite during the live broadcast.
8PM, either casting your vote, or instructing Twitter on who to vote for.
11PM, watching the votes come in.
12AM, the winner giving their reprise.
Do we have a calendar this year for all the national semi finals and finals etc? Or am I being blind?
The 'National Threads & Entries' thread is also being used to mark the dates when songs are getting selected, but I guess we have nothing that points out dates for heats/semi-finals
Could not get tickets for ANY shows, even dress rehearsals! Another year of sitting out unless I get lucky in March.
Are Germany doing a show this year?
Haven't seen anything to say they are?
I think it’s pretty certain at this stage that they’re selecting internally, and there are unconfirmed reports (based on a 45 minute version of “Unser Lied für Rotterdam” appearing in TV listings) that the entry will be presented on February 27th.
27 songs will be declared/premiered in the next 12 days so hold on to your wigs euroqueens!
Greece is coming on Sunday and Austria is filling a gap on 5th March
Ireland is apparently releasing their song on March 5th as well so updated accordingly.
This is what I've gathered for the release schedule..
Update 2 March:
3 March (tomorrow)
- Israel
4 March (2 days from now)
- Netherlands
- Switzerland
5 March (3 days from now)
- Austria
- Ireland
7 March (5 days from now)
- Bulgaria
- Denmark
- Finland
- Portugal
- Sweden
TBA (within 1 week)
- Azerbaijan
- Cyprus (Sandro is performing in Romania 01/03 so song is fully expected to be released before then)
- Georgia
- Malta
- North Macedonia
- Russia
- San Marino
Anything I'm missing?
So in just the next 3 days we'll be getting 8 new entries
Sandro is performing at Romania's selection on Sunday so I expect Cyprus to drop before then.
Damn, this year is SO bad.
Cyrpus and San Marino will premiere tomorrow
San Marino is tonight I thought?
I love the opening of the 2009 final!
Let’s hope that 2021 is better x
People still think its happening? Public gatherings are being cancelled and postponed left and right
Presumably it would just be held in a TV studio, rather than cancelled altogether. The Danish final looked a bit eerie in a big arena with no audience so hopefully it would be moved out of the Ahoy and just done in a small scale venue, I’m sure an audience of a few hundred would be allowed.
They'll probably either cancel or go ahead with Ahoy. Going ahead with no audience would mean a collosal loss for AVROTROS and they're fundings are down already
Moving to a TVstudio could work but that'd mean EBU is gonna have to bring additional funding me thinks
Is today not the deadline for entries and we still don't have Russia or Azerbaijan?
They all have to have been submitted to the EBU by today but they don't necessarily have to be released publicly at this point.
Azerbaijan is supposedly being released tomorrow and Russia will be by the end of the week.
