Syn Cole rules the charts for a second week with Nevve as Despacito rises to a new peak of #2. Blanche’s ascension to #3 scores her the highest-peaking Eurovision track so far this year, beating out Occidentali’s Karma’s peak of #6. She’s one of five total Eurovisioners to chart thus far, along with Italy’s Gabbani, Bulgaria’s Kristian Kostov, Latvia’s Triana Park and Moldova’s 3rd-placing Sunstroke Project who debut this week further down the chart. Lana Del Rey and Jhene Aiko (with Cashmere Cat) also score additional top 5s this week; both ladies have been here once already this year.

Last week’s #2, #3 and #4 slip down into the teens this week, a respectable showing after five charting weeks each near the top end. Vukovi, Troye Sivan, Caroline Pennell + Felix Snow and Manila Killa surge into this week's top 20. New entries-wise, there’s not many in the top half – only Iggy Azalea’s Switch, this week’s highest debut. Further down the 40 this week though there’s a bunch – Unknown Pleasures contender LOLO, along with more conventional tracks from Mila J, Linkin Park, Drake, Paramore, the aforementioned Sunstroke Project, Say Lou Lou, Kehlani, Carmody, James Hersey and Miley Cyrus. Del Rey’s Lust for Life also re-enters and re-peaks, boosted by its gorgeous recently-released visuals.

I’ll be adding video links and a bit of commentary for the new entries through the week, so check back for that, I’ll update the thread title accordingly.
For now, the top 40 for this first week of June:

Hi Jupiter,

Despacito closing in on that #1 spot...

Calvin Harris just missing out on a Top 10 this week then, and I see your former #1 from Wale and Co is quickly dropping too. sad.gif

Nice to see someone else charting Emily Warren other than me! laugh.gif

Please be sure to check out my chart for this week — Top 40 Countdown by awardinary (W/E 08/06/2017).

So many comments this week! So nice to see biggrin.gif

It's only when I look at this again now I see Sway at the top was a non-mover this week, but the whole rest of the top 12 were risers hitting new peaks. Cool! Not much has stuck around the chart for a long time; only the Naked and Famous have landed more than 5 weeks on the trot. It's the second N+F track in a row to chart a large number of weeks at a low-ish peak, having had two runs. The alt band have another track waiting in the wings too that will be charting soon that might well follow a similar model.

As for this week's newies:

Iggy continues a surprisingly solid comeback after a string of poor decisions the last few years, both personally and professionally. I still don't know how I feel about her as a person, but Switch is a pretty good song. This outpeaks previous charter Mo Bounce already in its first week, and also gives featured singer Anitta her debut appearance - though perhaps not her only one, her own song Paradinha has been a big grower this last week.

Alt R&B for Mila J, Longway lifts from her recently-released Dopamine. It's a genre I'm a big fan of and try and keep up with a lot of new releases from. Mila J fits nicely into the camp of artists that Tinashe used to be in before reinventing as a pop singer. I feel this is her first solo charter for me - although I vaguely recall a song she did with I think Timbaland from before I started doing these. She's been active on and off since '06.

Another Eurovisioner, this year's guilty pleasure song. Those kinds of songs are hit and miss with me, but this one's pretty catchy. Landing third in the competition overall propped up by the Epic Sax Guy meme, it's one of the highest novelty songs of Eurovision has had in recent years since the Russian grannies. On another note, I can't get over how much their lead singer looks like Malfoy from the Harry Potter film series.

Drake's comeback single I feel works a lot better as a second single and with the summer weather. I'm mixed these days on what Drake himself I feel brings to a song, but the instrumental on this is gorgeous and Frank Oceany. It is, fittingly, Drake's second charter for me from his latest album.

A second charter for Kehlani, another R&B girl. In My Feelings is a light and positive track the type I rarely take a shine to. Production values are great and this is a solid one to just jam along to. Be great for a driving song down the coast too; makes me wish I had a car.

An interesting change in direction for Linkin Park that finally charts after languishing just outside the top 40 for a few weeks. I may or may not have ended up playing it a bit extra because I felt it deserved to make it in as I don't do a bubbling under. It's probably my third favourite of the tracks they've charted for me this year so far, but it's also catchy in a weird way. All the rock bands seem to be going off at tangents this year which at least keeps things interesting.

Third charter for Paramore from their new one, and it's the second instant grat (or second single?). I don't mind this one. Still deciding how I feel about Paramore's change of direction on the new record. So far I'm finding myself gravitating most towards the songs most like their older sound, or the ones most like the Ting Tings, which is a sound I'm hearing through a lot of the album, though I'm sure they'd never admit to the influence. This also gives me shades of Bastille.

It's a good thing I delayed this week's chart a wee bit as this would've been a dead giveaway for my Unknown Pleasures (Indie foum game) votes. This LOLO track was a great find, released last year, and 100% my favourite track of the competition. I knew LOLO before but thought she might have ended her career; she's had two bites at the apple so far in the UK at least, under two different names. I have one of her tracks from around 2014 when she was being supported by radio 1. This is a great wee song though; first time I heard it I thought it was Pink singing! Definitely a good stopgap while we're waiting on her new material.

Second solo charter for Carmody follows last year's For Desire. It's pretty hard to find a lot about Carmody online as the name was also used by a hard rock band, now disbanded. This Carmody's music is dark and mellow, threading a line between Bat For Lashes and Jessie Ware.

It's been too long since new Say Lou Lou, so I'm reaching the remains of their last album. I tend to ration albums in case artists don't release anything else new for a while, and also because different tracks just sound better at different times. Angels (Above Me) follows, in order, album tracks Julian, Nothing But a Heartbeat, Hard for a Man, Love is the Loneliest Place, Skylights, Wilder than the Wind, Glitter, Peppermint, and Everything We Touch as songs I've ended up playing to death. In case you can't tell, I'm a pretty big Say Lou Lou fan, it's my fifth year in the fandom and they're in my top 40 most played artists of all time (which, incidentally, I'm counting down in the countdowns subforum). I'd highly recommend their album Lucid Dreaming, and basically everything they've put out so far. They've promised album #2 coming soon.

I'm still adjusting how I feel about Miley 4.0. Malibu is not particularly up my street. It feels unfinished and like it hasn't quite decided to commit to any one genre, but not like it's deliberately playing at being between genres as a creative statement. I'm expecting there'll be more defined statements on her next album, when it drops.

One that's been hanging around the lower reaches for a few weeks and this week just sneaks in. Hersey's another of these acoustic singer-songwriter artists who also features on EDM genre songs. I knew him from his Filous and Kygo features; this one's a solo that chases that sound a wee bit while also being mainly acoustic. It's a cool mix.

And that's the week!
