Wasn’t really sure what else to call a thread like this. It occurred to me today when listening to recent songs from The Weeknd, The 1975 and Jonas Brothers that they heavily feature a saxophone solo. This seems to be happening more often that I realised. I’m sure it isn’t the first time a trend existed of using a saxophone on a song, but then it got me thinking of other times in the past where a certain instrument would feature heavily in a number of songs at the time.

Can you think of other examples in recent times?

Yep Accordion was popular in late noughties/early teenes with Heater, Stereo Love & Glad You Came.

The trumpet was popular in mid-teens with Thrift Shop, Talk Dirty, Worth It etc.

Sax was also popular in 2013/14 with the 'holy trinity' of sax house UK chart hits in Changes, Jubel & Vandaag.

Even had the tuba in 2014 in Walking With Elephants.

Piano house also tends to come and go...

I may be wrong but did saxophones become quite prominent back in 2014/15 in dance music especially?

My fave is Fleur East's 'Sax' that makes prominent use of a trumpet instead of a saxophone biggrin.gif

2011 was a big saxophone year too, with The Edge Of Glory, Mr. Saxobeat, Last Friday Night and I'm sure there were others (Dev 'In The Dark', but that was a much bigger hit in the US than the UK).

Oh yes that did feature heavily at that time didn’t it. I remember thinking similarly back the too.

Of course Rizzle Kicks brought the trumpet back in 2011 too and Jason Derulo in 2013.

Other examples:

Use of violins/violin samples were rather popular in 2004-6 in dance music (probably inspired by Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme)
Prominent use of bass guitar in 1982 or so with new romantic music, also saxophones too in the early 80s with Spandau Ballet, ABC etc.
There was also the ska movement in late 70s/ early 80s which made big use of brass instruments
Acoustic guitar in European dance music about 2014-5 (the Robin Schulz type sound)

Sam Fender used sax on nearly all the tracks on his album - love the sound of it.

Not sure if this counts but we also had the whistling era of Spring 2011 - Summer 2012 tongue.gif

Does the dubstep breakdown of 2011-13 count?

I don't usually comment but couldn't let this pass as a trumpet player - none of these songs feature a trumpet, all three of the riffs you're referring to are saxophones tongue.gif

Jason Derulo's other song from the same album does funnily enough feature Trumpets, but the less said about that the better... An actual good example of a popular song featuring trumpets is Uptown Funk! smile.gif
