BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Top 100 Best Selling Teen Acts Since 1980

Posted by: Gezza Jan 18 2015, 08:07 PM

Oh Yes- this is HAPPENING!

Hello and welcome to my first major countdown of 2015 (and the first one in 10 months) as we celebrate the top 100 teen acts since 1980 based on singles sales.

THE RULES

For solo acts this is easy- the date they turn 20 the sales count will end.
For groups of more than one- when MORE THAN 50% of the group are aged 20 or more.

As per usual in my threads, duets/ collaborations where the act is mentioned individually will count towards their totals.

PRE DOWNLOAD:

Providing a record debuts on the chart before their 20th birthday then ALL sales of the song will count even if they turn 20 during that tracks run. NO DOWNLOAD SALES WILL COUNT AS THESE WILL BE AFTER THEY ARE NO LONGER TEENAGERS

POST DOWNLOAD:

Only sales up until the week the act are no longer a "teen act" will count.

This attempts to slightly redress the balance that post download age acts have, as before that stock was limited so couldn't trickle sell.

Of course the internet can't tell me the birthdays of all acts during this period so it is entirely possible that there is an act I've omitted for which I apologise now. Given the nature of the charts these days there is also an element of estimation in the more recent acts.

Sales period covered is 1980-2014

Thanks go to Vidcapper, MW, MFR, Alan Jones, Wikipedia, youtube, and a few other sources.

This must have been even more of a pain to compile than most of your countdowns! Nonetheless exciting, first (new) Gezza countdown in a while ohmy.gif Quite retro ~

Posted by: fchd Jan 18 2015, 08:32 PM

Sounds very interesting. Looking forward to seeing how this one pans out.

Ooh this sounds interesting ohmy.gif Looking forward to hopefully seeing some of my faves here heehee.gif

Posted by: Riser Jan 18 2015, 11:09 PM

I'd be more excited if Rebecca Black had any chance of featuring. nocheer.gif

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jan 18 2015, 11:18 PM

I wish you'd started in 1970 rather than 1980. Then I could have asked how you knew how old The Wombles were tongue.gif Great Uncle Bulgaria was obviously well past his teens. After all, Minuetto Allegretto starts with the line "Back in 1780 when Bulgaria was a lad" biggrin.gif

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 19 2015, 12:10 AM

Looking forward to it! As Bre says, it does sound like this was more difficult to compile than most of your countdowns but I think the download disclaimer is good and will make things fair.

There's a particular famous lady who had a big hit at 19 which I think will surprise some, mainly because I don't think some will have realised she was that young at the time!

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 Jan 19 2015, 12:16 AM

Rally looking forward to this wub.gif

I can think of 1 artist at the moment. Though I'm not sure if this is big hit in 80's or the last few years

Posted by: Robbie Jan 19 2015, 12:18 AM

This will be a very intriguing countdown as many of the "teen acts" over the years were actually in their 20s when they achieved chart success. It'll be interesting to see who makes the list, especially in the lower half of the chart.

I think I know who Liam is talking about tongue.gif

Definitely looking forward to this countdown. Can't imagine how much work must've gone into compiling it.

100. KRIS KROSS (272,000) 5 HITS

Oh yes just 13 when they hit the big time “Daddy Mac” and “Mac Daddy” donned their clothes back to front and were “Totally Krossed Out” for much of 1992. Their biggest hit was of course “Jump” which went to No 2 that summer and topped the US chart for 8 weeks, they also landed a spot supporting Michael Jackson on his “Dangerous” tour that year and got a part in Jacko’s “Jam” video before the hits dried up in 1993. Chris Kelly died in 2013 at just 34 from a drugs overdose.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 19 2015, 06:28 PM

99.ALED JONES (274,000) 4 HITS

Now of course much more famous for presenting “Songs of Praise” and being a TV presenter, Jones shot to fame in 1985 when his version of “Walking In The Air” made the top 5. Though the song is synonymous with the Channel 4 film “The Snowman” the voice on the film version (which dates from 1982) is actually Peter Auty but its showing every Christmas created a nice piece of promo for the Jones Version that saw him become a popstar as well as a chorister.

I am looking forward to following this. A bit of a depressing start at #100, and makes me wonder about how many of these teenage stars fell from grace following their success. It's a poison chalice for a fair few of them i would have thought sad.gif

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 19 2015, 06:36 PM

Ah I see - I thought it was a countdown of songs, not acts. blush.gif

Not really a fan of either - can only tolerate 'Walking in the Air' when it's on The Snowman! tongue.gif Sad to hear that about Chris Kelly from Kris Kross.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jan 19 2015, 06:37 PM

I really shouldn't, but I do love Jump ph34r.gif (never knew about that death though, how horrible sad.gif)

Of course Walking In The Air is still a classic, one of the definitive songs of my childhood!

The person you *may* be thinking of turned 20 later on in 1978, so will not appear here.

Posted by: Riser Jan 20 2015, 01:37 AM

I'm amazed that Jump spent only 8 weeks in the UK chart when it had that many weeks at #1 in the US! I know that was typical for 1992 but would have expected a longer-than-average run for that song.

98. DIANA VICKERS (279,000) 3 HITS

Rising to fame at the age of 17 on the X Factor back in 2008, Vickers was mentored by Cheryl Cole and finished the competition in 4th place behind Alexandra Burke, JLS, and Eoghan Quigg. Vickers went into the West end before returning to pop music with the 2010 chart topper “Once” co-penned by Cathy Dennis, Subsequent hits didn’t exactly light up the charts but she is one of only 5 X Factor products on this list.

YES DIANA! wub.gif

Posted by: Gezza Jan 20 2015, 05:50 PM

97. ONE TRUE VOICE (280,000) 2 HITS

Here’s another reality lot that were (in the main) teenagers when success came calling. Losers in the race for Christmas No 1 for 2002, some might say they were doomed from the start having Pete Waterman as their manager and following a boyband route that was already out of date (covering Bee Gees song very big in the mid-late 90s but not in 2002). Anyway the press had a field day with the boys and when second single “Shakespeare’s Way With Words” (which incidentally is co-written by former SAW act Rick Astley) bombed at No 10 the boys called it a day without even 300,000 singles sold to their name.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 20 2015, 05:53 PM

96. ADELE (300,000) 3 HITS

The title of her first album gives the game away but Adele was a teenage when her first three singles were released with debut hit “Chasing Pavements” making up the great majority of sales she amassed before entering her 20s. Don’t really know what happened to her after this.....................

Nope, not that one. biggrin.gif

It seems like it should be obvious Adele would appear here given the name of her debut album but she's certainly not one that came to mind! I had a listen to 19 again and it's gorgeous; really nice stripped back sound and I'm happy so many people checked out the album when 21 hit the charts. 'Chasing Pavements' remains a big favourite. wub.gif

I really liked Diana's first 3 singles, shame she didn't have much success in the end. sad.gif

95. SHAMPOO (302,000) 6 HITS

Briefly the future of girlbands in 1994 these two girls were quick to “sell out”, in some people’s opinion, to commercialism and forget their “Riot Grrrl” roots for spreads in “Smash Hits”. Good job they did or they wouldn’t be on this list, their main hit “Trouble” narrowly missed out on the top 10 but their abrasive approach to pop was in some ways a pre-cursor to girl power which would catapult the Spice Girls to international fame a few years later.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 21 2015, 06:15 PM

94. BAD BOYS INC (306,000) 6 HITS

Always in the boyband c-list this lot scored 6 top 30 hits in 1993 and 94 in the heyday of boybands. They were put together by producer Ian Levine (producer of much of the early Take That) and were the first band to appear on “The National Lottery live” TV show (who knew?). The only one to go on to anything of note is Ally Begg who is still a sports presenter.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 21 2015, 06:18 PM

93. STACY LATTISAW (306,000) 2 HITS

Plucked from obscurity by Narada Michael Walden at just 13 he transformed Lattisaw into a pop star with the hit “Jump To The Beat” which made No 3 in 1980 and was of course later covered by Dannii Minogue in 1991 . The hits dried up quite quickly though her 1982 track “Attack Of The Name Game” was sampled extensively on Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreaker” in 1999.

I thought Stacy would have just missed out, so it's good to see her here. She was known around US soul music circles before Narada "plucked her from obscurity" - apparently "Ring My Bell" was written specifically for her when she was just 11 but that never happened and Anita Ward went on to have a number one with it.

Love Diana Vickers - Once when it came out, but weren't that keen on the follow ups The Boy Who Murdered Love and the terrible My Wicked Heart. But I did enjoy the singles from her 2nd album, such a shame they weren't successful.

And have fond memories of Shampoo when I was a kid and remember hearing Trouble all the time and thought that they were huge, but turns out I was wrong, and plus loved their other song "Girl Power", which was so fun and catchy.

One True Voice, I did actually like their first song both Sacred Trust and found After You're Gone, much better, then I knew they would be over after Shakesphere's Way With Words, such a terrible song, but camp in a way, and was so surprised when it reached #10 on the UK charts, I was expecting it to peak lower end of the top 40 or something, but it took full advantage of the low sales era at the time, plus I've noticed that they looked as if they knew that it was over for them, judging by that music video, I mean come on, what idiot thought that would have been a good comeback single for them.

Great idea for a top 100 - I'll enjoy this.

92. WILLOW SMITH (306,000) 1 HIT

Oh remember this one? They’re just getting younger on this thread, Smith was a mere 10 years old when “Whip My Hair” made its debut at No 2 to the chagrin of many members of this forum though incredibly it was held off the top by an even more annoying record (Black Eyed Peas’ “The Time (Dirty Bit)”. She’s not graced the top 75 since thankfully though as a 14 year old she can still add to this total for a long time- be warned.

Posted by: HausofKubrick Jan 22 2015, 09:57 PM

Still a major tune wub.gif

Posted by: ¡bré! Jan 22 2015, 10:00 PM

In what world is 'The Time (Dirty Bit)' more annoying than 'Whip My Hair'?

Also she did actually have a second top 100 hit ohmy.gif '21st Century Girl' which was a much more tolerable song but alas peaked at just #91.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 22 2015, 10:00 PM

91. JOJO (310,000) 4 HITS

Her appearance on “America’s Most Talented Kids” saw Jojo get a record deal aged 13, and by 14 she was pumping out the hits narrowly missing out on becoming the first act born in the 90s to have a No 1 single when “Leave (Get Out)” was pipped by Nelly in September 2004. She was actually offered her first contract aged 6 but has been out of the limelight since 2007 during which time she was in dispute with her record label until she was in her 20s.

90.DEUCE (310,000) 3 HITS

When he wasn’t busy managing East 17 and Pet Shop Boys (among others) Tom Watkins also managed this lot who formed this band after the lead singer did work experience in his office, their first hit “Call It Love” missed out at No 11 but second single “I Need You” smashed into the charts at No 10 thanks in part to coming third in the heats for that years Eurovision Song Contest (losing out to Love City Groove). After their third hit the lead singer quit and the band were dropped, even a new record deal and a new member couldn’t revive their fortunes.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 22 2015, 10:06 PM

Incidentally before someone points it out- Yes Willow Smith was NOT a teen but there a few pre-teens on this list so the title is slightly erroneous but it's a "celebration" of YOUNG popstars so I thought I would count them to....

Posted by: jafetsigfinns Jan 22 2015, 10:39 PM

"narrowly missing out on becoming the first act born in the 90s to have a No 1 single"

So who actually was the first?

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Jan 22 2015, 11:27 PM

Sean Kingston with "Beautiful Girls" in 2007.

89.ALYSSA REID (313,000) 1 HIT

A graduate of Canadian talent show “The Next Show” (though she wasn’t a winner) Reid only had one hit in this country (and now she’s over 20 the only hit ever for this thread) when she took Heart’s 1987 No 3 hit “Alone” and put a 2012 spin on it. The track actually went one better than the original did in the UK charts though it could have been better as it lead the midweek sales flashes only to lose out to David Guetta’s “Titanium” come Sunday.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 23 2015, 04:06 PM

88. SAM FOX (321,000) 1 HIT

Launching herself at just 16 as perhaps the most famous page 3 girl of all time, Samantha Fox was an immediate hit with the readership of the “Sun” which resulted in considerable fame in the press. Her decision to give up topless modelling when she hit 20 was tied to her entrance into the pop world with “Touch Me (I Want Your Body)” which made No 3 here but also (surprisingly) No 4 in the USA, her pop career was extended to the end of the 80s thanks to producers S/A/W before reality TV called for Fox.

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Jan 23 2015, 04:07 PM

I love a good portion of her singles. One of the most shameless pop stars ever. laugh.gif

Posted by: Gezza Jan 23 2015, 04:08 PM

87. CIARA (326,000) 4 HITS

A teenager for the period of her debut album Ciara earned herself the tag “First lady of Crunk N B” with her first hit “Goodies” which as co-penned by the same guy who co-wrote Usher’s “Yeah” and provided the singer with a UK No 1 hit in early 2005. Three more top 10 hits followed in the year including a feature on Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” which was a favour returned for the rapper’s guest spot on Ciara’s “1,2 Step”.

ALYSSA Alone Again is a wonderful track and I really wish it had made #1, it had pretty decent sales though so can't moan. Such a shame that she never had another hit because she has two fantastic pop albums FULL of hits, like this one:

LOVE JoJo too, Too Little Too Late is one of my favourite songs of all-time heart.gif

Yeah, then you have Alyssa Reid a couple of places higher who only had the one forgotten hit, I guess that's what you get for having your biggest hit in 2004, although "Too Little Too Late" was big also in 2007.

86. DELTA GOODREM (329,000) 5 HITS

From “Neighbours” to the charts was a well worn career path by 2003 but that didn’t deter Delta Goodrem who gave up playing Nina Tucker to conquer the pop charts. Her debut album “Innocent Eyes” produced five No 1 singles in her native Australia and three top 10 singles over here where the album shifted over 900,000 copies. A fight with cancer and a relationship with Brian McFadden followed but her debut album remains one of the top 10 best selling of all time in Australia.

Posted by: JosephJamil Jan 24 2015, 03:39 PM

Didn't even consider that Delta would appear here, that sales tally looks dreadful for her first 5 hits, 4 of which were top 10 hits sad.gif And of course she only had one further UK charting song. Such a shame they gave up pushing her in the UK, one of my favourite artists of all-time.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 24 2015, 03:46 PM

85. DANNII MINOGUE (329,000) 4 HITS

Well if you can’t get into the charts via “Neighbours” then how about “Home & Away”? Dannii was of course a star long before Kylie in Australia thanks to her starring in “Young Talent Time” but by the time Kylie was becoming a popstar Dannii starred in “Home & Away” and started a fashion range and by 1991 the lure of the charts was too much with four top 20 hits.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 24 2015, 03:49 PM

84. VANESSA PARADIS (332,000) 2 HITS

After debut hit “Joe La Taxi” spent 11 weeks at No 1 in 1987 (in France at least) it took the, then, unusual step of crossing the channel and becoming a hit in the UK despite having no English lyrics and making the 14 yr old an international star. It proved to be her only hit here for 4 years until 1992’s “Be My Baby” suddenly restored her to the top 10, she hadn’t been slacking in between becoming the face of Chanel and dating Lenny Kravitz who co-wrote the latter hit for her, and all before she hit 20!

Yeah exactly, I like the Jump Smokers raps but it takes away from it being Alyssa's interpretation of Heart's classic track.

83. THE SATURDAYS (333,000) 3 HITS

More teenager than not until January 2009, The Saturdays first three hits make up this total. Introduced to the UK audience as a support act for Girls Aloud back in 2008 and were initially offered songs rejected by GA. The hits began to roll anyway, the Yazoo sampling “If This Love” the first of 13 top tenners to date en route to becoming one of the biggest girlbands of the decade.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 25 2015, 11:29 AM

82. AARON CARTER (347,000) 8 HITS

Sometimes it’s who you know in pop that gets you a break, and of course when your big brother is in the Backstreet Boys then it can’t hurt and indeed Aaron Carter’s first appearance on stage was supporting the boys in 1997 which led to his version of the Jets 1987 hit “Crush On You” becoming a top 10 hit when Aaron was just 9. By 12 his chart career was over before most had began and Carter is the youngest star to make this thread.

81. NICOLE (352,000) 2 HITS

Winner of the 27th Eurovision song contest Nicole was also the first German to win the competition and must have fancied her chances as her original performance was in German (which you'’d have expected) but her reprise after the winning the competition was done in 4 languages (Dutch, German, French, and English). It was obviously to sell the song to as many markets as possible and sure enough the song debuted at No 8 before climbing to No 1 for a fortnight and becoming the 500th No 1 single in the UK.

British? When did that become a language? blink.gif

Delta Goodrem = I remember her on Neighbours and then releasing "Born To Try", which was great and infact her first album was awesome, my fave being "Lost Without You", and also loved "Innocent Eyes", "Not Me Not I" and "Predictable". Her second album I was never that keen on, but did have a soft soot for "Almost Here". It was such a shame that In This Life or her 3rd and 4th album weren't released over here.

Vanessa Paradsis = I loved "Be My Baby" at the time, and remember It took me years to find that song and who sung it, but watching that TOTP performance she does look awkward and quite stiff, but who cares I still like that song, and also found another of hers on youtube, called "Sunday Mondays" which is also nice and catchy.

Aaron Carter = He was awful, although when I was a kid I did like "Crazy Little Party Girl", which I am shamed by it now.

80. 2 UNLIMITED (353,000) 1 HIT

Jean Paul de Coster and Phil Wilde are the names of the “real” 2 Unlimited, they had a hit in 1990 as Bizz Nizz with “Don’t Miss The Partyline” and embarked on a long working relationship with each other. For their next project they needed some vocals, enter Ray Slijngaard who wrote the raps, and also enter Pete Waterman who agreed to release the records in the UK but was so appalled by the raps he removed them for the UK release of “Get Ready For This” which still made No 2 before both of the group members made 20.

79. ASH (356,000) 5 HITS

A spot of britpop now and probably the biggest thing to come from Northern Ireland in the 90s, Ash named their first album after the year most of them were born, “1977” and it delivered up 5 hits which account for the sales above. The band were one of the few to outlast those heady days of Britpop and still be clocking up top 20 hits well into the Noughties.

78. JAKE BUGG (361,000) 5 HITS

Bugg must have a considerable amount of gratitude for the BBC who plucked him from the wilderness and gave him a Glastonbury slot in 2011 which got him a record contract and a subsequent appearance on “Later....With Jools Holland” before any songs had been committed to the album. Such was the hype around him that his debut album beat Leona Lewis to the No 1 spot in 2012 though singles wise he’s yet to dent the top 20.

77. USHER (385,000) 3 HITS

With a debut album at 16 after being signed by L.A Reid and being produced by Puff Daddy is there any chance that Usher could fail? His first album didn’t do anything here but 1998’s “My Way” gave the UK a No 1 single in “You Make Me Wanna” and accounts here for over 330k of this total. He would go on to become one of the biggest acts of the 00s which few would have expected in 2000 but by that time he was an old fogey!

76. t.A.T.u (388,000) 2 HITS

Everyone loves lesbian schoolgirls right? So figured t.A.T.u whose first single “All The Things She Said” was a hit in their native Russia in 2001 under the title “"Ya Soshla S Uma” but it was old hand Trevor Horn who got involved in the project penning the UK lyrics and remixing the single for the European market and it became a hit throughout late 2002 before finally topping the UK charts in February 2003. The duo couldn’t maintain the hits despite coming third in Eurovision in 2003 and later on they confessed that the lesbian image was all for the cameras – who’d a thought?

75. CHESNEY HAWKES (417,000) 4 HITS

For about a month he had it all, looks, a hit film and the No 1 single in “The One And Only” yes Hawkes was the flavour of the month and seemingly a hit with the ladies. “Smash Hits” is popularly credited (rightly or wrongly) for ended Hawkes’ career early after they mercilessly mocked him for his facial mole but it certainly didn’t help. He’s regained some popularity now in a kind of ironic 90s way at least.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 28 2015, 05:32 PM

74. BOYZ II MEN (437,000) 1 HIT

Named after a New Edition song (we’ll meet them in this thread later) these guys met at school and sneaked backstage at a Bell Biv Devoe concert to meet Michael Bivens of the group who was also in New Edition. He agreed to manage them and they managed to sneak in one “teen” hit, but when that hit is a No 1 it’s understandable how you end up in the top 80 of this thread, “End Of The Road” had some help though appearing in the Eddie Murphy film “Boomerang” and topped the US charts for a then record of 13 weeks but a mere 3 weeks on this side of the Atlantic.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 28 2015, 05:36 PM

73.BLAZIN SQUAD (443,000) 6 HITS

How could anyone forget Blazin Squad- a bunch of 10 16 yr olds who took time out from studying for their GCSE’s in 2002 to record a cover (of sorts) of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s 1996 hit “Crossroads”. Much was made of the fact that they collected their results whilst they were No 1 and the fact that they accumulated 6 top 10 hits over a two year period is noteworthy but only Kenzie had anything approaching recognisability after the group disassembled and that was for reality TV programmes and dating Jodie Marsh.

Posted by: Gezza Jan 28 2015, 05:41 PM

72.GABRIELLA CILMI (469,000) 4 HITS

A product of the once magnificent production team of Xenomania, Cilmi was first heard on UK TV when she performed the version of “Echo Beach” for the ITV series in 2007/8 and within 12 months had scored herself a top 10 with “Sweet About Me” and could be heard on the Co-op ad with her cover of Connie Francis’ “Warm This Winter” which became another top 30 hit (can’t understand why this isn’t a yearly re-charter but hey ho). She even managed to squeeze a second album out before her 20th birthday with a further top 10 hit “On A Mission” but after that she’s been notable only for her absence.

Boyz II Men didn't realize they were that young, such a fantastic group End Of The Road and plus I'll Make Love To You are all time classics.

Blazin' Squad, never liked them overrated

Gabrillea such fond memories, On A Mission was such a tune, got sick of Sweet About Me radio killed it

I still tend to forget just how young Ash were when they first entered the charts. It makes me feel terribly old to think that their members are still some way short of 40.

I remember seeing a video on Youtube of Enrique Iglesias performing "Takin' Back My Love" with Gabriella Cilmi (instead of Ciara) and realizing that Enrique was twice her age! 34 and 17 years old respectively, at the time. I really wish she'd have a comeback of some sort, she's only 23 now!

71. BUSTED (474,000) 4 HITS

Championed by “Smash Hits” Busted were granted a considerable amount of goodwill by the music press due to the fact that there really was no UK band (in the traditional sense) in the charts who played their own instruments and wrote their own songs back in 2002. The fact that they appealed to the teenage audience didn’t hurt as the hits started to roll and of course they spawned McFly who outsold them....eventually.

70. NEW EDITION (478,000) 3 HITS

You may recall these lot (well a couple of them anyway) helped Boyz II Men onto this list at No 72 but not before they got themselves on it. Conceived as a new updated or edition of the Jackson 5 by Maurice Starr, he whipped them into the studio and recorded a song “Candy Girl” which only made No 46 in the US but made it all the way to No 1 here in 1983. As it transpired they only scored three hits before the group started to fall apart and a certain Bobby Brown went on to become Mr Whitney Houston whilst three others formed Bell Biv Devoe and Ralph Tresvant scored his own top 20 hit in 1991.

69. AVRIL LAVIGNE (510,000) 6 HITS

Exploding from Canada like a teenage Morissette, Avril Lavigne peddled the same kind of angst ridden tunes that had brought her spiritual elder considerable record sales and indeed she became the youngest female ever to have a UK No 1 album (at the time). Lavigne placed five of her first 6 singles in the top 10, a start she’s been unable to keep up being absent from the upper tier of the charts for 8 years now.

How the hell did Avril go from not outstanding but a pretty decent standard of songwriting at 16-18, to crap like 'Hello Kitty' by the time she's 30? Rock N Roll is the only decent thing she's done since 2005.

Aye, but it's creeping up.

What's most interesting about Ash is that they recorded pretty much all their good songs while teenagers. While still at school really.

'Kung Fu' is my favourite by them but also love 'Jack Names the Planets', 'Angel Interceptor', 'Girl From Mars' and 'Goldfinger'. It kinda all went downhill from 'Oh Yeah' onwards I thought.

68. OLIVER HELDENS (526,000) 2 HITS

“Gecko” was the song that not only gave him his chart birth but also brought him to the attention of Tiesto who promptly signed him. The song was released as an instrumental in January 2014 on the continent becoming a minor hit but when the vocals of former “The Voice” contestant Becky Hill were added and the track retitled “Gecko (Overdrive)” it became an even bigger hit topping the UK charts back in July last year.

67.HOLLY VALANCE (537,000) 3 HITS

Signing up for “Neighbours” at 16 Valance left behind “Felicity “Flick” Skully” in 2002 to attempt chart domination and recorded a cover of Tarkan's "Şımarık" which had been a hit in Europe in 1997 though it didn’t nothing here. A risque video and some FHM shoots and she debuted at No 1 in 2002 though when the second album tanked she left the music business and returned to TV and Film where she still pops up.

66. MARTIN GARRIX (554,000) 4 HITS

Still a mere 18 yrs old there’s plenty of time for Garrix to add to his total here though he appears to have stalled slightly after the magnificence of debut “Animals” which topped the charts in 2013 with his follow up “Wizard” making No 7 with just 4 weeks of chart life to its credit. Apparently he wanted to be a DJ since the age of 8, I think I wanted to be a transformer at that age.....time flies.

65.LEON JACKSON (564,000) 2 HITS

X Factor winner 2007, oh c’mon now you DO remember! Yes Jackson won in that year and promptly shoved his cover of “When You Believe” out for Christmas and it naturally topped the charts but on a sales figure of just 275k which was considered a “Flop” at the time. Certainly his career ended up being one of the most unsuccessful not even cracking the 600k mark.

Another act who still in her teens Birdy rose to fame in 2008 when she won “Open Mic UK” when she was just 12 and three years later she released her debut single “Skinny Love” her version of the Bon Ivor 2008 track. The original only made No 88 but Birdy’s recording went much better getting top 20 after support from Radio 1.

63.CONOR MAYNARD (570,000) 3 HITS

Drawing many comparisons to Justin Bieber partly through their routes into the music business (namely covers on youtube) and also partly down to their ages, Maynard was spotted by Ne-Yo doing a cover of “Beautiful Monster” and was helped by the star including duetting on “Turn Around” which became his third single. We’re still waiting for the second album and of course now he’s too old for his sales to count for this thread but he still has a faultless top 10 hit rate.

Posted by: Noahspike Feb 2 2015, 07:37 PM

I remember really liking Leon on the show and thinking his winner's single was pretty decent! He clearly wasn't a 'star' but he was a likeable guy with a great voice so I've always felt a bit sorry for him as he never had anything resembling success. Not exactly sure what happened there but I imagine he was screwed over somewhat with the focus on Leona at the time and the musical direction chosen for him.

Birdy gets far too much disdain on here! Her voice is beautiful and both her albums have great moments.

Conor Maynard's always seemed majorly overhyped to me (and so cringeworthy in performances/videos pirate.gif) but he did deliver with a couple of singles.

Posted by: ► ▲ N Feb 2 2015, 07:46 PM

Skinny Love was good but she never really progressed from there. I did like People Help The People/Wings for about a week though but got boring fast (Skinny Love got boring at times too but that was more due to its really long chart run)

Conor Maynard did some good singles, wonder if he'll keep the quality up with whatever he does next.

Marrying the theme from “Casualty” to dialogue from “Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels” proved the ticket to launch these two to No 1 back in 2000, a position they returned to just a year later as members of the So Solid Crew. The group were plagued by bad press and various brushes with the law which saw them splinter in 2003 though they continue in a fashion to this day. Anyway “Crank That” came with its own dance and topped the US charts for 7 weeks becoming something of an anticipated here when released. It went to No 2 held off by Leon Jackson (this thread is sweet revenge for him) and he seemed quite happy to have one single a year to chart until 2011 when they stopped.

The decision to make “The Osbournes” must have been one of the best moves made in Ozzy Osbourne’s long career as it made stars of his family and pushed Sharon, Kelly and Jack onto our TV screens as well as Kelly and Ozzy back to No 1 in 2003 with “Changes”. It’s this lot that you have to thank for part of Westlife’s success believe it or not! Their third single “Forever” was a hit over Christmas 1996 and got the attention of Mr Cowell who searched out the writers Wayne Hector and Steve Mac (this was their first composition together) and who he subsequently used extensively to write much of the material for his acts. Anyway their success in the 90s was cut short when their label folded and by the time they signed a new contract and got new material out in 2000 we had all moved on. Only member of note is Jade Jones who is Mr Emma Bunton.

There can’t be many better 16th birthday presents than signing your own record contract and that’s exactly what Ama did back in 1995 and after a year of writing and preparing her first single “You’re the One I love” bombed missing the charts entirely. Cover version to the rescue and “You Might Need Somebody” proved just the ticket making the top 5 with a re-issued YTOIL going even better to make No 3. BRITS and MOBO’s followed in 1998 and all looked rosy before the traditional fate for British R N B female singers came to pass and Ama promptly went off the boil.

57. SEAN KINGSTON (608,000) 6 HITS

When “Beautiful Girls” topped the charts back in September 2007 Kingston became the first artist born in the 90s to top the charts in the Noughties- trivia right there for you! It was his only top 10 hit whilst still a teenager but he hit the headlines again in 2011 when he was involved in a Jet Ski accident which thankfully didn’t turn out too serious.

I'm surprised to see Shola Ama on this list... always thought she was in her mid to late twenties during the time of chart success!

Posted by: Acidburn Feb 5 2015, 03:50 AM

Loved Shola Ama when I was a kid, "You're The One I Love" was my jam, and even loved the singles from her 2nd album "Still Believe" and "Imagine" they were both brilliant and can't believe they flopped so hard. Such a shame she had such potential.

Posted by: Mango Feb 5 2015, 09:50 AM

Conor Maynard is definitely a big guilty pleasure of mine, for me he's delivered with every single so far, and the production on 'R U Crazy' was fantastic. Anyone know why he's waiting so long to release a second album? 'Contrast' came out in 2012, and 'R U Crazy' was late 2013, then there's been nothing since then. Has he been dropped? I'd be surprised if he has, especially after a #1 album.

Posted by: JosephStyles Feb 5 2015, 11:16 AM

He's been teasing his new single for a couple of weeks now so it's not far off!

56. COVER DRIVE (620,000) 5 HITS

Another group helped to fame via youtube, Cover Drive were promoted with a little help from fellow Bajan Rihanna on the home leg of her “Loud” tour in 2011. They surprised some when their second track “Twilight” became a smash and grab No 1 single in February 2012 and are still on target for a second album in the imminent future.

55.GLENN MEDEIROS (624,000) 3 HITS

Introducing a spot of tropical sunshine into the summer of 1988, Glenn Medeiros popped up with a cover of George Benson’s “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You” which spent a month at No 1. It was to be his only top 40 entry until 1990’s “She Ain’t Worth It” which just sneaked into the charts before his 20th Birthday and saw him paired up with the unlikely duet partner Bobby Brown.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 5 2015, 05:48 PM

54.LORDE (634,000) 5 HITS

When “Royals” hit the top spot in late 2013 it marked only the second time that a New Zealand act had made the top here (Kimbra was the first as far as I can establish anyway) and spent 9 weeks at the top in the US where she was the youngest female to do so since Tiffany 26 years previously. In the UK she was the youngest woman to make No 1 since Billie Piper in 1998, she hasn’t managed to hit the top 20 since but with a second album due this year that could all change.

53.DEBBIE GIBSON (636,000) 8 HITS

The original teen prom pop princess, Gibson was scoring US No 1 singles at just 18 when “Foolish Beat” went all the way enabling her to become the youngest act ever to write produce and sing a US chart topper. Her UK success wasn’t quite as amazing with only the aforementioned “Foolish Beat” and “Shake Your Love” making the top 10 as she was eclipsed here by both Tiffany and Kylie in the teen stakes of 1988. She was last spotted as Katy Perry’s mother in the video for “Last Friday Night”.

52. PJ & DUNCAN (648,000) 8 HITS

“PJ MY EYES MAN I CANNAE SEE” god bless “Byker Grove”- A friendship formed on the series blossomed into a pop career when Ant & Dec left the show to embark on a music career and for some reason decided to keep their on screen names for the purpose. Well it worked as they accumulated six top 20 hits before they both entered their 20s and decided that Ant & Dec was now a more appropriate popstar name.

51.GIRLS ALOUD (662,000) 2 HITS

It was Cole’s 20th Birthday in June 2003 that curtailed their sales here and only their first 2 hits are eligible but then of course one of them is “Sound Of The Underground” so that’s not a bad thing I suppose. They had the advantage of clearly having the better song and the production team of Xenomania behind them who delivered up a string of hits for them as they became the biggest selling girl group of the noughties.

I really like some of Debbie Gibson's songs, Out Of The Blue, Shake Your Love and Red Hot they were amazing and even Electric Youth is pure cheesy fun and also Lost In Your Eyes is stunning and smashed in the USA making #1 but only charted at #34 in the UK.

Posted by: AntoineTTe Feb 6 2015, 11:04 PM

50.ETERNAL (670,000) 5 HITS

Eternal were conceived as a UK version of En Vogue and were the first UK girl group to hit it big since Bananarama in the 80s, as it turned out they ended up just as big despite an ever decreasing band membership. For the purposes of this thread however they were a teen act up to Louise Nurding’s (as was) 20th birthday in November 1994 by which time they well on their way to a million.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 7 2015, 02:01 PM

49. SONIA (670,000) 6 HITS

Badgering Pete Waterman every Saturday morning when he presented a radio show in Liverpool Sonia finally got her reward when he asked her to sing live on the show and he signed her up, a few months later and her first single “You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You” was No 1. They helmed her first album producing 5 top 20 hits (a record for a UK female artist at the time) before she was dropped by her label in 1990. She did return to the charts a year later but the S/A/W magic touch had started to desert them and it was hardly a success.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 7 2015, 02:05 PM

48. TAYLOR SWIFT (693,000) 4 HITS

Swift’s first album made her into a country star but it was her second album (and a much more pop enthused effort) that started the UK hits ticking over with “Love Story” even making a No 2, a peak which has yet to be bettered, though it has been matched. Oddly her third album failed to produce any big singles here but she’s since pulled it all back to be one of the biggest popstars in the UK at present.

47. MONICA (710,000) 7 HITS

Discovered at 11 by Dallas Austin she was signed up and had produced her first album at 15 which gave her some top 40 hits but nothing charted for more than 3 weeks. It was her duet with Brandy in 1998 on “The Boy Is Mine” that is responsible for her position here, and truth be told, for her follow up “The First Night” also making the top 10, but in 1999 the hits dried up after a cover of Eternal’s “Angel Of Mine” failed to go top 50 though it was a US No 1.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 8 2015, 02:50 PM

46.ANOTHER LEVEL (715,000) 3 HITS

A teen group for their first year Another Level were a boyband with their eye on the urban market with a view to be more credible and less pop than the likes of Five etc. Dane Bowers and the other ones (let’s be honest few remember their names) released only 8 singles all of which made the top 11 including their cover of “Freak Me” which was their only No 1 single before Bowers went off to date Jordan and the group fell apart. By way of trivia Alan Sugar’s daughter is married to one of the members of the group (Mark Baron)- who knew!

Posted by: Gezza Feb 8 2015, 02:53 PM

45. ELLA EYRE (744,000) 3 HITS

Eyre is another graduate from the BRIT school who made good on the charts by being featured on the Rudimental track “Waiting All Night” which provides her with a good 85% of the sales here. Celebrating her 20th Birthday in April 2014 means she won’t add to this tally for this thread but a promising solo career is in the offing after winning a MOBO and a support slot on Olly Murs’ tour this year.

Eternal = Loved them back in the day, so underrated and several great tunes Oh Baby I, Save Our Love, Power Of A Woman, I Am Blessed.

Sonia = YES so brilliant, really loved her first album "You'll Never Stop Me From Loving You" was brilliant one of my alltime faves also Can't Forget You, Listen To Your Heart and Counting Every Minute.

Another Level = Really liked Alone No More and Freak Me, they had such potential but never got passed the 2nd album

Posted by: richie Feb 9 2015, 09:03 AM

Some good acts starting to appear here - I seem to remember really liking Debbie Gibson, not necessarily her tunes though.

Also finding it hard to believe that the way Ant and Dec are dressed up there was ever considered normal, but I think it was. Must cast my mind back to some of the ridiculous get-ups I was wearing in the mid-90s. I do remember huge orange, purple and lime green shirts were in for some reason - maybe due to Ant's trailblazing.

44.S CLUB JUNIORS/ S CLUB 8 (785,000) 7 HITS

Naturally these lot are here enabling Frankie and Rochelle to be the only individuals to appear on this list in two different groups. They formed after they were picked on the TV show “S Club Search” as a spin off from their already famous pop elders and intended only as a support act for S Club’s tour that year. They proved so popular they got a record deal and a hat-trick of No 2 hits followed but after the second album underperformed and their final single peaked outside the top 10 their chart days were over.....for most of them anyway.

43.ALEXIS JORDAN (810,000) 4 HITS

This list is littered with manufactured pop and reality TV popstars and I for one am not complaining! Jordan was one of the contestants on “America’s Got Talent” and her subsequent youtube videos caught the attention of a Stargate who got her in to record some tracks and they introduced her to Jay Z and the rest is history.

Posted by: Mango Feb 9 2015, 06:02 PM

SOOOO many guilty pleasures of mine in this latest update!

Debbie Gibson heart.gif I still listen to 'Shake Your Love', 'Electric Youth' and 'We Could Be Together', such great pop songs, and even more amazing considering that she wrote and produced most of her hits herself at the age of 18. Name me a female popstar of that age that could do that these days!

Eternal - 'Just A Step From Heaven' is one of my all time favourite pop songs. 'Oh Baby I' is gorgeous too smile.gif

Sonia - quite liked her too, even though she was just another S/A/W puppet!

PJ & Duncan - big guilty pleasure of mine back in the day. WHAT is going on with that shirt Dec is wearing in the pic though? laugh.gif

Looking forward to the rest of this countdown biggrin.gif

42.JORDIN SPARKS (854,000) 5 HITS

From “America’s Got Talent” to “American Idol”, and back in 2007 the winner of that was Jordin Sparks who was within a year in our top 10 on the Chris Brown duet “No Air”. She'’s been the opening act for the likes of Britney Spears and the Jonas Brothers before she deserted the music scene in 2010 for films and the stage but a return is promised very soon.

Posted by: HausofKubrick Feb 9 2015, 06:03 PM

Not listened to her album yet, but Alexis Jordan's singles were all brilliant. That's a much bigger sales total that i would have thought for her though ohmy.gif if you have a sales breakdown of the singles, could you possibly share? Interested to see how much 'Happiness' has sold in particular.

Jordan Sparks is hit and miss for me. ADORE most of her singles (particularly 'S.O.S...') but never really got into 'No Air' - found it far too shouty~

Posted by: Acidburn Feb 10 2015, 12:31 PM

Monica - Really liked The Boy Is Mine back in the day and even her version of "Angel Of Mine" was nice but nothing compared to Eternal's version. Also liked "All Eyez On Me" quite a catchy tune.

PJ and Duncan - Pure cheesy fun, okay they were never faves of mine but they did have some fun songs "Let's Get Ready To Rumble" was fun, "Our Radio Rocks" also cheesy fun and really liked "When I Fall In Love" which is rather forgotten now, but say what you will they did have a successful run of hits back in the day, such memories.

S Club Juniors/8 = Harmless enough and did hope that they would have filled the void after S Club 7 split, but never happened, their stuff was nowhere near as good, but did enjoy "One Step Closer" and "Sundown", the rest were pretty much awful "Puppy Love" (wot the hell were they thinking).

Alexis Jordon = Sorry just didn't get into her, found Good Girl rather annoying. What did happen to her anyway.

Jordin Sparks = Had a couple of decent tracks especially SOS and Battlefield, but found No Air bland and lifeless, I mean what was the fuss about. But truly talented singer and hope she makes a decent comeback someday.

41.ALTERED IMAGES (858,000) 3 HITS

Only their first three singles are eligible for this thread but two of those are their biggest hits so Clare Grogan et al sneak into the top 40. Their first single “Dead Pop Stars” was released at the same time as John Lennon was shot so a case of bad timing prevented it being a hit but “Happy Birthday” made up for it when it almost went to No 1 in late 1981 and made Grogan a pin up for a time.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 10 2015, 05:30 PM

40.MYA (859,000) 2 HITS

Named after the poet and novelist Mya Angelou this is a bit of an unusual entry. Her debut album was actually released in 1998 and was quite a substantive hit in the US, over here of course we roundly ignored it, but it did allow Mya to get a guest spot on Pras Michel’s “Ghetto Supastar” and on Blackstreet’s “Take Me There” both of which did do some business on our charts as you can see. Her second album in 2001 did make her a star in her own right thanks to the excellent “Case Of The Ex”.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 10 2015, 05:33 PM

39.BROS (862,000) 4 HITS

Phenomenally famous for 2 years Bros are still a cautionary tale for every popstar of excess and boom and bust in the fickle market of boybands. Their first 6 singles all went top 4 and in 1988 they sold a million singles alone, over 800,000 of them whilst all teenagers, the man behind them was Tom Watkins who moulded their image to appeal to girls and gays alike and for a while it worked a dream! By 1991 it was all over and the boys were left virtually bankrupt.

38. CLEOPATRA (870,000) 6 HITS

Three sisters who, in their day, caught the attention of the Madonna (who signed them to Maverick Records in the US and gave them a top 30 single) and the Spice Girls who got Cleopatra to support them on the UK leg of their “Spiceworld Tour”. BRIT nominations followed and another top 5 single on the ABBA tribute were 1999’s highlights but record label issues and parting ways followed in 2000 and chart momentum was lost.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 11 2015, 05:01 PM

37.BRANDY (874,000) 5 HITS

Monica’s sparring partner in “The Boy Is Mine” proves to be the bigger popstar here. The pair famously didn’t get on in real life with the words of the song proving prophetic, anyway some revenge is dished out here. She spent most of the 90s since her debut creating movie songs and starring in some, and dating other musicians (one of Boyz II Men and rapper Ma$e) whilst managing two albums of her own.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 11 2015, 05:05 PM

36. SAMANTHA MUMBA (878,000) 6 HITS

You can thank a certain Louis Walsh for this one, only 15 when she was discovered on a talent show in Ireland Mumba had a brief but very successful career consisting of 6 top 6 singles. “Gotta Tell You” famously lost the midweek lead to Eminem and she upset Bowie fans with her sample of “Ashes To Ashes” on her next single “Body II Body”, but it was the inability of “I’m Right Here” to generate sales (it sold 63,000) as a lead single for a second album that proved the final straw (despite it’s No 5 peak) and she was dropped.

Posted by: Mango Feb 11 2015, 05:08 PM

Not too fussed about anything Cleopatra released.

Brandy's favourite era by far for me was 'Afrodisiac' - love that album, especially the title song wub.gif

Samantha Mumba had a great voice and some decent pop songs ('Gotta Tell You' and 'Always Come Back To Your Love'), shame she didn't last beyond one album.

35.MCFLY (884,000) 8 HITS

Tom Fletcher may have failed to make the cut for Busted but he was retained as part of the songwriting team for the band which led eventually to Fletcher forming Mcfly with help from James Bourne. McFly were an instant success with two chart toppers from them and a Comic Relief single in March 2005 which remains their best seller. In short they released 8 singles as a teen band of which half made No 1, they would of course be considerably higher were it not for the poor sales climate of 2004/05.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 12 2015, 05:34 PM

34.JOE MCELDERRY (892,000) 3 HITS

He might have seen Olly Murs off to win the X Factor in 2009 but poor Joe’s winning track “The Climb” couldn’t make the festive No 1 spot as it lost out to Rage Against The Machine as a token of defiance to Simon Cowell’s domination of the spot despite selling over 450,000 copies in a week. It made No 1 the following week but will still deemed a failure by many, and when his follow up “Ambitions” failed to crack the top 5 he was virtually written off and his relationship with Syco was broken in early 2011.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 12 2015, 05:39 PM

33.TIFFANY (912,000) 6 HITS

Along with Debbie Gibson they were the faces of late 80s US teen pop, Tiffany promoted her album on a tour of US Mall’s, which in 1987 was the first time that this kind of promotion was used and led to her being labelled a Mall rat which was perhaps a bit harsh. She scored a No 1 with her cover of “I Think We’re Alone” and then scored three further top 20 hits before 1988 was done and before the magic faded. Tiffany spent the rest of her teens trying to "emancipate" herself from her parents but did tour with New Kids On The Block supporting her which ironically helped them to far outstrip her eventually.

Posted by: Mango Feb 12 2015, 05:41 PM

As a McFly loon, I was wondering when they'd appear smile.gif shame they suffered in the poor sales climate of 2004/2005. Still, having their first 15 singles all make the Top 10 is impressive - even if the chart runs of those singles aren't quite so impressive kink.gif

Posted by: Acidburn Feb 12 2015, 11:46 PM

Cleopatra = Actually quite liked them and shame their 2nd album never took off, actually liked "Come And Get Me" which limped in at #29, should have done much better.

Samantha Mumba = Again another surprise thought that she would have lasted longer than the first album, such cracking tunes Gotta Tell You, Always Come Back To Your Love and Baby Come On Over, were amazing.

McFly = Never that keen on them but did like their first 2 songs 5 Colours In Her Hair and Obviously.

Joe McElderry = To be honest "Ambitions" was pretty awful and was actually surprised it went as far as #6, thought it would have peaked at #15. But his follow up was better "Someone Wake Me Up" but failed because of Ambitions.

Tiffany = Loved "I Think We're Alone Now" one of my alltime faves, dunno why she chose "Radio Romance" to lead her 2nd album here, "All This Time" was better but got released 2nd and flopped at #47.

Posted by: Mango Feb 13 2015, 10:10 AM

Yeah I'll never understand why 'Ambitions' was chosen to try and launch Joe McElderry's career. Ironically, the B-side to 'Ambitions' was PROPER AMAZING:

Why they didn't choose to go with that as the lead single will forever remain one of pop's great mysteries unsure.gif

32.KYLIE MINOGUE (923,000) 2 HITS

1988’s other teen pop songstress is next, overtaking both Tiffany and Debbie Gibson she sold more singles than anyone else in the year but only her first two singles are eligible here. “I Should Be So Lucky” topped the charts for 5 weeks and follow up “Got To Be Certain” narrowly missed out on replicating the feat, both were chart toppers in Australia however where she spent 17 weeks at No 1 with her first three hits.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 13 2015, 08:18 PM

31.CHRISTINA AGUILERA (931,000) 4 HITS

Painted from the off as the rival to 1999’s biggest star Britney Spears, Aguilera was always the better singer and certainly the better starter in the US with three chart toppers by the end of 2000. Back in the UK of course she didn’t quite match up to Spears but still she did get another 2 top 10 hits plus the floppy “I Turn To You” before her teens ended.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 13 2015, 08:42 PM

30. WHAM! (1,006,000) 3 HITS

Their lucky break on “Top Of The Pops” came courtesy of Marvin Gaye pulling out at the last moment and they got called in despite not being in the top 40 at the time. A hit with teenage girls from the off they racked up the top 10 hits before they disbanded in 1986, but at the start of the band’s fame they were more noted for the social commentary in their tracks rather than the pop tunes which would come to symbolise them.

Posted by: AntoineTTe Feb 13 2015, 08:43 PM

I thought Kylie would have been a lot higher. I had no idea what age she was in 1988 and didn't care to look it up.

Posted by: ḇreakaway Feb 13 2015, 10:56 PM

Poor Xtina, her career literally began to fizzle with Back to Basics.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 14 2015, 02:16 PM

29. MILEY CYRUS (1,027,000) 8 HITS

From the loins of Billy Ray “Achy Breaky Heart” Cyrus sprung little Miley who followed in her father footsteps and became a pop star though of course a spell as “Hannah Montana” certainly helped in making her an international star and gave her her first hit in character when the theme “Best Of Both Worlds” which made No 43. Cyrus spent the remainder of her teens accumulating 7 top 30 hits without hitting the top 10 and finishing her stint on “Hannah Montana”- little did we know what was round the corner.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 14 2015, 02:20 PM

28.LITTLE MIX (1.047,000) 3 HITS

The first, and to date only, group to win the X Factor I’d forgotten that they had to change their name from “Rhythmix” halfway through the competition. Whilst “Cannonball” wasn’t the biggest X Factor winning single they proved that they could be genuine popstars when follow up “Wings” also soared (sorry) to the top, indeed only two teen X Factor acts has sold more than they did....wonder who they are?

Posted by: Gezza Feb 14 2015, 02:24 PM

27. EAST 17 (1,064,000) 7 HITS

The third Tom Watkins managed act to appear on this list, East 17 played out a rivalry with Take That in the 90s that was only beaten by Blur and Oasis, this is one thread that East 17 win hands down though they were no longer a teen band by Christmas 94 thus missing out on a healthy boost from “Stay Another Day”. They did however beat the Take That boys to the No 1 spot on the album charts.

Posted by: AntoineTTe Feb 14 2015, 06:13 PM

I always preferred East 17 to Take That.

Posted by: toxic_air Feb 14 2015, 06:30 PM

SAMANTHA MUMBA!

She had some great tunes (3 to be exact) and a weird cameo in the remake of "Time Machine".

Posted by: Acidburn Feb 14 2015, 08:00 PM

Kylie Minogue = YES YES YES, LOVE her my all time favourite singer, love her PWL days, I Should Be So Lucky, Locomotion, Got To Be Certain, Hand On Your Heart, Never Too Late, all classics from the 80's.

Christina Aguilera = Always loved her first two albums Genie In A Bottle, What A Girl Wants and Come On Over are all brill from her first album, then Dirrty, Beautiful, Fighter, Can't Hold Us Down and The Voice Within' were the perfect run of singles from her 2nd album. To be honest I weren't keen on Back To Basics and hasn't recovered since with bad albums and single choices.

Wham = Another guilty pleasure for me and had some great tunes, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, Freedom and Club Topicana, all classics.

Little Mix = Amazing girl group and set to be one of the alltime greats, hope their 3rd album will be just as great as the first 2.

26. THE VAMPS (1,090,000) 5 HITS

They’ve got until July to add any “teen sales” for this thread, but it’s hard to believe the band have already sold a million singles! They famously missed out on the No 1 spot with their first release “Can We Dance?” by just 1,150 copies to OneRepublic and whilst they have collected 5 top 10 singles in a row the big one still eludes them. In a neat parallel they supported McFly and The Wanted (among others) to help get themselves promoted.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 15 2015, 02:07 PM

25.HANSON (1,135,000) 6 HITS

Ah the brothers Hanson, what wasn’t to like about “MMMBop”- an instantly catchy pop song that was so infectious that even a trip to the clinic couldn’t help to clear it up. It pretty much blanketed the planet for the group topping the charts in 13 countries, the more “grown up” sound of their second album in 2000 proved a commercial disaster and killed their career as a major player in the charts.

24.CHRIS BROWN (1,158,000) 12 HITS

Let’s all go back to before THAT incident and remember a younger Brown who arrived as some kind of NU USHER in early 2006 with “Run It” (which incidentally missed out on No 1 by just 215 copies). He was however very much a collaboration ho from the off and just 5 of those 12 teen hits were solo credits.

Posted by: JosephStyles Feb 15 2015, 02:17 PM

I forgot The Vamps actually, didn't realise they'd sold so many singles! And I keep a close eye on their sales too laugh.gif They've done incredibly well, their album has also been pretty big, will eventually get to platinum biggrin.gif

Fantastic result for Hanson! It's a shame T Boy and I seem to be their only big fans here.

Posted by: toxic_air Feb 16 2015, 06:43 AM

A pleasant surprise to see Hanson so high. My inner 7/8 year old continues to stan for 'Mmm Bop' and 'Where Is The Love'. wub.gif

Posted by: Cody Slayberry Feb 16 2015, 06:50 AM

Chris Brown has always proved that he can make some sure-fire music. I loved a lot of his first two albums, own Fortune and most of Exclusive, and enjoy him on a regular basis.

Also how fitting to show his position on the list celebrating another UK hit! biggrin.gif

23.DISCLOSURE (1,171,000) 6 HITS

The act that introduced Sam Smith to the pop world, Disclosure came dangerously close to the No 1 spot “White Noise” but they haven’t yet quite made the top spot yet. Not so on the album charts where “Settle” brushed aside all competition in June 2013, they even managed to crack the US market when “Latch” made the top 10 in 2014.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 16 2015, 05:53 PM

22.RIZZLE KICKS (1,177,000) 4 HITS

Starting off with a run of 4 top 10 hits (which make up their total here) Brighton’s finest were friends before they both went to the BRIT school and started to make records together. A feature on Olly Murs' “Heart Skips A Beat” became their only (to date) No 1 single though they came close with “Mama Do The Hump” which was produced by Norman Cook and a promo which saw a cameo by James Cordon.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 16 2015, 05:57 PM

21.SUGABABES (1,186,000) 11 HITS

Dropped by their record label and a member left, things didn’t look good for the Sugababes in 2001 and the chances of a second album remote at best. Then one of the most famous about turns in pop history in the 00s occurred when the girls got a new member, a new record deal, and to top it all the No 1 hits started to come three of which are in this total. Of course it all ended up messily but let’s remember them in their golden days......

Sugababes are of course an all-time favourite and like you said, what a turnaround! 'Angels With Dirty Faces' and 'Three' were solid eras!

Posted by: ► ▲ N Feb 17 2015, 01:32 PM

Disclosure cheer.gif They should increase their sales total by a lot this year with their next album due hopefully, obviously that won't help them in this chart as the teenager in the duo is now 20 (the other was never a teen in their hit making career)

Posted by: Acidburn Feb 17 2015, 02:29 PM

Sugababes one of the greatest girl groups of all time alongside Spice Girls, All Saints, TLC, Girls Aloud, Destiny's Child and Bananarama. But Sugababes have had some cracking tunes = Freak Like Me, Hole In The Head, Push The Button etc, and shame they got caught up in the low sales era, if it wasn't for that they would have sold double that amount.

Hanson = found memories of Mmmbop and yes I got caught up in the craze/

Posted by: T Boy Feb 17 2015, 03:33 PM

Here just for Hanson tbh. Been listening to all their material over the past few days. It's almost all better than MMMBOP. Such a shame that's all they'll be remembered for. Seriously leagues ahead of 'bands' like the Vamps and 5SOS.

20. ELLA HENDERSON (1,203,000) 3 HITS

Proving the odd adage that not winning the “X Factor” is far preferable to winning it, Henderson finished in 6th place on the show but was signed by Syco anyway which doubtless gave her access to Ryan Tedder with whom she co-wrote “Ghost” which became her first single and a No 1 to boot.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 17 2015, 06:16 PM

19. DESTINY’S CHILD (1,210,000) 8 HITS

The first of two girl groups in a row and also the second of three with changing line ups- those girls just can’t get along! A young Beyonce was clearly the centrepiece of the group from the off, but the group managed only 1 top 10 hit from their first album here before half the group was fired and another two members recruited for the “Say My Name” video, with the group finally being paired down to a trio prior to “Independent Woman Part One” becoming their first No 1. Thankfully it all settled down after that just at the point that sales became ineligible for this thread!

Posted by: Gezza Feb 17 2015, 06:20 PM

18. ATOMIC KITTEN (1,222,000) 5 HITS

Combining the tales of two very recent entries, Atomic Kitten at least kept their record deal during line up changes but as a last ditch attempt at surviving “Whole Again” certainly did the track making No 1 for a month and selling just shy of a million (for the purposes of this thread). The band had built three top 10 singles on the trot but each with ever diminishing sales and when “Follow Me” only made No 20 coupled with a poor selling album and the departure of Kerry Katona it all looked rather dire but it was “Whole Again” that made the following three years possible.

Whilst that may be true, they had huge selling albums when album sales were quite a lucrative market so I'm sure they were better off.

Posted by: dhwe Feb 18 2015, 08:22 AM

Hanson: "MMMBop" is probably the first song I can remember from the time it was a hit (as opposed to the Whitney songs my mom played which would've been a decade-plus old by then). The only other song of theirs I've heard is "Penny & Me", which my older sister liked a lot in 2004 (and, thus, which I liked a lot also).

Atomic Kitten: They made no mark on the US charts, but weirdly enough I remember the video for "The Tide Is High" being played here frequently on Disney Channel, which was probably the most exposure they received here (and the only reason I had any idea who they were, tbh)

Posted by: richie Feb 18 2015, 09:47 AM

Hey, how did I miss Tiffany at number 33?

Surprised to see Disclosure and Rizzle Kicks so high, but it goes to show you how well records are selling at the moment.

I think in a chart like this it doesn't matter how recent their success is because the cut-off point of 20 years applies to everyone. Someone making this chart from 30 years ago won't be benefiting from 30 years of sales, just whatever sales they had up to the age of 20.

That's not to dismiss your point about her only coming 6th in X-Factor - given her success in that competition she really has done well, and pretty much deserves her success in 2014 on account of her vocal talent.

Ah, but Ella is not yet 20, so she has just short of a year to potentially accumulate more, not that I know if she'll be able to do that.

17. MUSICAL YOUTH (1,242,000) 7 HITS

A band broken by Radio 1 DJ John Peel, these loveable school kids most famously sung “Pass The Dutchie” which is a song not without its connotations which wasn’t perhaps the most appropriate song to be sung by the group but in the 80s it was a different world. The song also made the US top 10 making the band the first black act to be played on MTV, subsequent releases didn’t fare so far as the group were curtailed on how much promo they could undertake as they were kids and were prohibited by law at that point, at least that’s what they blame.....

Posted by: Gezza Feb 18 2015, 06:07 PM

16. CHIPMUNK (1,354,000) 9 HITS

Whatever happened to Chipmunk? Apparently he’s now called just “Chip”, but he hasn’t made the charts since 2011 as lead act. Back when he was a teenager however he was quite the hitmaker scoring a No 1 with “Oopsy Daisy” and introducing us to Emeli Sande. He’s now signed to T.I’s label who advised him to shorten his name hence “Chip”.

Posted by: jafetsigfinns Feb 18 2015, 06:10 PM

Chip featured on Wiley's 2013 single "Reload" which made it to No. 9, but since then he's been pretty much a ghost sad.gif

Posted by: Gezza Feb 18 2015, 06:11 PM

15. PIXIE LOTT (1,368,000) 8 HITS

Pixie was supporting the Saturdays on tour when she scored her first No 1 single “Mama Do” which was co-written by Phil Thornalley (also co-writer of Imbruglia’s “Torn”) who was formerly in 80s band Johnny Hates Jazz. He would go on to co-write and co-producer Lott’s first three singles including her second No 1 single “Boys & Girls” which created chart history for the biggest “official” (within the top 75) leap to No 1 when it powered 73-1 in September 2009.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 19 2015, 05:37 PM

14. LEANN RIMES (1,505,000) 8 HITS

She may have had 8 hits in her teens but it’s mainly the megahits “Can’t Fight The Moonlight” and “How Do I Live” that make up this total (1.2 million between them). She was the most immediate blueprint of the Taylor Swift road to international success, first album country, second album into country pop, and it worked a treat with “How Do I Live” becoming the first song in pop history to peak higher in the year end chart (6) than it ever did in the weekly charts (7).

Posted by: Gezza Feb 19 2015, 05:42 PM

13. FIVE (1,558,000) 6 HITS

Formed by Simon Fuller and with Cowell’s guiding hand Five were basically a male version of The Spice Girls, or an East 17 to Boyzone’s Take That if you prefer. Thanks to the “Big Reunion” we know that the group were plagued with in fighting and bullying accusations but they were a highly effective band in delivering top 10 hits and clearly sales. Although the chart toppers arrived after their “teen” period all those 6 hits were top 10 hits with only debut “Slam Dunk (Da Funk)” selling less than 200,000 copies.

Five = Loved them back in the day ever since Slam Dunk Da Funk (which will always be a guilty pleasure of mine), plus their first album singles were excellent = When The Lights Go Out, Got The Feelin', Everybody Get Up and Until The Time Is Through were all amazing. They ended too soon in my opinion, Let's Dance was another fave of mine from them.

Leann Rimes = Always loved "How Do I Live" such an excellent and timeless classic as well as "Can't Fight The Moonlight", plus she's had some other greats = Life Goes On, Commitment and And It Feels Like

12. RIHANNA (1,562,000) 9 HITS

The fourth highest placed female soloist on this list is, depending on how you count sales, the biggest selling female act of all time with over 1.5 million of those sales coming before her teens ended. She would be considerably higher but for the sales climate of these years with “Umbrella” topping the charts for 10 long weeks during a rainy summer of 2007 which would undoubtedly be a million seller in other years. With 6 of those hits top 5 she rarely failed to hit spot and even subsequently a Rihanna flop rarely seems to have any impact of her long term chart career.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 20 2015, 08:36 PM

11. FIVE STAR (1,712,000) 12 HITS

Much more a replication of Jackson 5 than New Edition ever were, Five Star were brothers and sisters managed by their father and their first 12 hits encompass their zenith popularity wise. Though the No 1 spot always eluded them they scored 6 top 10 hits in 15 months in 86/87 but had fallen out of favour by the end of the decade.

Several, I would imagine.

There you go then! I'm not sure whether I'm surprised on her placing or not but I'm guessing the 6th (and final) hit to count was "Umbrella" at some point in its chart career? Top ten was impossible then!

I've no idea who's in the top ten apart from maybe one or two acts.

10. BILLIE PIPER (1,749,000) 8 HITS

Becoming the youngest female solo act to debut at No 1 Billie Piper appearance on the pop scene was immediate, indeed she was the youngest female ever to garner a hat-trick of chart toppers when, in May 2000, she debuted at No 1 again with “Day & Night”- she was just 17. The period was marred by being booed at the Smash Hits awards in 1999 as she was dating Five member Richie Nevill, and a court case against a stalker, and when her second album disappointed she withdraw from the charts and ventured into acting which proved lucrative. Had her final single, a cover of Blondie’s “Tide Is High” been released and made it big, then it’'s probable Atomic Kitten'’s cover a year later would not have been made.

09. WESTLIFE (1,787,000) 5 HITS

Louis Walsh’s golden boys (once he’d convinced Ronan to go solo and split up Boyzone) started their career with seven tracks which all debuted at No 1- a record which still stands today. Their first hit “Swear It Again” was part of a purple patch for Irish acts in the charts and in a twelve month period when 9 tracks by Irish acts topped our charts, more than the total of the 45 years previously. They essentially became a covers band from around 2005 onwards though for the period covered here they did at least produce original material singles wise.

I started to think about who might be in the top ten and forgot about the 1980 start-point. So, I can cross Lulu and Cliff off my list now laugh.gif

08. CRAIG DAVID (1,908,000) 6 HITS

The great hope of the British music press in 2000 Craig David was a mad who could do little wrong during the year opening with one of the first big commercial garage records to make the mainstream (“Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta”) he grabbed two No 1 singles through the year and a debut album which sold over 200,000 in its first week, a record at the time.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 22 2015, 12:26 PM

07. BOYZONE (1,911,0000) 5 HITS

Talking of covers bands, Boyzone were fresh faced boys when they started (who can forget that first TV appearance) as they started off with five top 5 hits though they failed to grab a chart toppers until Take That had split. They promptly went on to become the biggest selling boyband of the 90s, yet incredibly on this survey, they aren’t the top Irish act!

Craig David's first album was so bloody good!!

So Im guessing Rihanna's numbers go from her start right until dont stop the music (the last single she releasee before turning 20)

Music Of the Sun era (325.000)
1. Pon de replay - #2 - 250,000
2. If it's loving that you want - #11 - 75,000

A Girl like me era (875.000)
1. SOS - 2 - 350,000
2. Unfaithful - #2 - 450,000
3. We ride - #17 - 75,000

Good girl gone bad era (1.710.000)
1. Umbrella - #1 - 850,000
2. Shut up and drive - #5 - 230,000
3. Hate that I love you - #15 - 150,000
4. Don't stop the music - #4 - 480,000

I dont know where your figures come from.... But my numbers say 3.910.000 FROM THOSE SONG ALONE. She is around 18.000.000 singles sold right now in her total.

06. B*WITCHED (2,651,000) 7 HITS

Who ever thought that B”Witched would be so high on this list when we started out? Becoming the first group ever to have their first four singles debut at No 1 they were unstoppable for 18 months at least racking up 2.6 million singles sales and 7 top 20 hits. Their mix of a denim clad wardrobe and lightweight pop was a winner to begin with but the novelty wore thin by the second album which ultimately resulted in them being dropped and splitting in 2001.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 23 2015, 05:55 PM

05. JUSTIN BIEBER (2,873,000) 31 HITS

Scoring by far the largest amount of hits here on this survey, and indeed ever by an act in their teens, Bieber was of the most famous finds from youtube who got a little help from Usher on the way into the charts at just 15. He’s had his fair share of criticism and bad press but you can’t deny that the ability to remain a hit maker after being famous so early in life is a credit to either his singing or his management depending in your view.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 23 2015, 06:00 PM

04. GARETH GATES (2,998,000) 7 HITS

7 hits in 20 months, that’s all it takes for Gates to be the biggest male soloist on this list. Runner up to Will Young on “Pop Idol” he of course launched his career with 1.3 million selling cover of “Unchained Melody” and within 12 months had scored 4 No 1 singles but it was again the curse of the second album that did the damage as it moved 11-32-55-73-out. In naturally resulted in him being dropped, mind you sleeping with Jordan didn’t help.

02. BRITNEY SPEARS (3,441,000) 9 HITS

There are few pop debuts as arresting as “....Baby One More Time” with its memorable video which announced Britney’s arrival in 1999. Spears teenage years encompass most of her “golden period” when the hits came thick and fast, three chart toppers and only 1 of those 9 hits failing to make the top 10 is pretty impressive as she dominated the pop world of 99/2000. A move to a more sexualised image in 2001 is popularly thought to have damaged sales but we all have to grow up sometime.

Posted by: Gezza Feb 24 2015, 05:53 PM

01. ONE DIRECTION (3,445,000) 10 HITS

Formed from failed solo applications on “X Factor” One Direction are now probably the biggest selling act globally to come from the show. All nine of their official singles released during the period went top 10 including 4 top chart toppers as they quickly established themselves as the premier boyband in the land replacing JLS and the Wanted on bedroom walls around the UK.

FIVE STAR = I actually do enjoy a lot of their song, bought the Greatest Hits recently for £3 and found it really good, System Addict, Rain Or Shine, Can't Wait Another Minute, The Slightest Touch, Let Me Be The One are all cracking tunes.

BILLIE PIPER= Again loved her back in the day and remember being in school when Because We Want To went to #1 and all my classmates were talking about her and remember also loving Girlfriend, She Wants You, Honey To The B and I Dream from her first album and Day And Night, Something Deep Inside, The Tide Is High, Ring My Bell, from her 2nd, but when Britney came out a year later everyone seemed to almost forget about Billie, and shame she never had a third album.

B*WITCHED = Another childhood fave, bought every single and album from them, and well just loved everything about them. Even love their recent stuff Love And Money, Champagne Or Guinness and Stars Are Ours all should have been hits.

JUSTIN BIBER = Only liked Baby and Somebody To Love, that's it.

GARETH GATES = Actually quite liked him at first Anyone Of Us was a great tune and his first album was pretty good and had some decent tunes = Sentimental (which should have been a single instead of What My Heart Wants To Say), Good Thing and I've Got No Self Control

Posted by: Acidburn Feb 24 2015, 10:04 PM

BRITNEY SPEARS = She will always be a legend in my eyes, just loved her from the start with that ever amazing "Baby One More Time" which had everyone in my school talking about at the time and plus all the girls wanted to be her and it was like that for a while.

ONE DIRECTION = So happy they won this and well deserved and probably the best boyband from this era, beats out Wanted and the ever terrible JLS. In fact I think they are my all time fave boyband ever alongside Take That, the 1D's albums just get better and better, where usually by album 3 or 4 boybands start to decline, but these boys just get even more brilliant and have had some cracking singles = What Makes You Beautiful, Kiss You, Story Of My Life, Best Song Ever and Night Changes, just awesome and just love these guys.

Posted by: ► ▲ N Feb 24 2015, 10:12 PM

If only Nicki Minaj was actually a teenager, then 1D wouldn't have won this drama.gif

they've clearly been really dominant though so it's not much of a surprise

YASSSS 1D, slay wub.gif Great to see Britney top 2 as well, her singles discography is one of the best of any artist imo.

Great countdown - shame about the winners! Although not surprising.

What did surprise me is that Justin Bieber has had 31 hits! They do shovel shit out quickly these days.
